There’s nothing quite like a warm getaway to escape the cold, dreary weather. The USA has some pretty incredible vacation spots that are perfect for winter. Feel the sunshine at these amazing destinations: warm places to visit in December in the USA!

To find warmth in the USA in December, you’re pretty much heading south. From island vacations to coastal destinations and deserts, there’s so many beautiful and adventurous places to beat the cold.

This list of warm places to visit in USA in December includes spots you’ve definitely had on your radar – but perhaps more intriguing are the underrated places you haven’t heard of!

Whether you’re looking for a vacation destination to get outdoors and active instead of cooped up, a perfect location to spend your holiday break, or you’re just looking for the best beach to visit in December, you’ll find a bit of everything on this list!

Starting this list off with a bang! When all you want in December is warmth, these are the perfect vacation destinations for you!

1. St Croix, US Virgin Islands

Wishing for warmer temps in December? Well St. Croix might just be the perfect spot for your winter getaway! The largest and least visited of the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix is an tropical oasis while escaping the cold.

Just at the start of the dry season, December is a perfect time to visit St. Croix. It’s a festive time of year with Christmas events and festivals across the island, including the Crucian Christmas Festival .

If you’re looking for the perfect beach in December on St. Croix, then Sandy Point Beach is it! Open on the weekends, it’s a National Wildlife Refuge, and one of the longest beaches in the US Virgin Islands. It’s closed during sea turtle nesting season, typically April through August, so December is the perfect time to visit!

For a true taste of the Caribbean, visit a rum distillery. St. Croix is home to Captain Morgan Rum Distillery and Cruzan Rum Distillery. Or, visit one of the 150+ sugar mill ruins on the island to soak in some history.

Other popular activities are hiking for those turquoise water views, taking a day trip to Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge and visiting Fort Christiansvaern.

2. Monterey, California (one of my favorite warm US destinations in December)

One of the ‘coolest’ warm places to visit in December in USA is Monterey, California. Known for it’s mild temperatures year-round, it’s a great spot for a winter getaway.

December is especially a great time to visit Monterey because the marine fog has mostly dissipated , versus the summer or early fall when it’s still lingering around. Crowds are fewer and prices are reduced, which is awesome for enjoying the area attractions.

Monterey is home to one of the United States best marine sanctuary, making it one of the best spots in the US for wildlife viewing ! Take a kayak tour of the Monterey Bay or witness seals and sea otters in their native habitats at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve .

Spend a day – or more experiencing Big Sur and one of the best scenic drives in the US, just south of Monterey. There are so many things to do in Big Sur that you’ll find something you love! Chase waterfalls, relax on beaches or get active on a hiking trail with incredible views of the coast.

Be sure to visit Cannery Row where you’ll find shopping, dining and plenty of entertainment options for all ages. It’s home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the best things to do with kids in Monterey.

3. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is a must on any  Puerto Rico itinerary , no matter when you vacation, but December is a particularly wonderful time to visit. Hurricane season is officially over, and daytime temperatures are in the low 80s, making is a great time to explore and hit area beaches.

The holidays are celebrated with verve all through the month. Old San Juan, the city’s historic district, is decked up in holiday lights and nativity scenes.

Enjoy Puerto Rican eggnog, an alcoholic concoction made with rum, coconut milk, and sweet spices. You’ll also find live music in the streets, and, leading into Christmas, folks singing Christmas carols at night. Very festive!

December is also perfect for sightseeing. Be sure to visit the historic forts of Old San Juan, and walk the colorful alleys to snap photos of the beautiful facades. 

The balmy weather makes December a great time to spend time of the many idyllic beaches in San Juan and just beyond , from the beaches of Isla Verde to Luquillo. For more beach time, plan on a day trip to Culebra Puerto Rico or Icacos Island ! If you’re looking for unique experiences, consider the Bioluminescent Bay, as reviewed in the battle of Culebra vs Vieques .

It’s also a great time to visit El Yunque, the tropical rainforest near San Juan. Hike amidst lush vegetation and waterfalls and take in the views from the observation tower.

4. Maui, Hawaii

If you’re looking for the best winter sun destinations, look no further than Maui. Home to incredible scenery like gorgeous beaches, tropical rainforests with beautiful waterfalls and epic adventures, Maui is an awesome place to visit!

It’s especially great in December because the rainy season hasn’t hit yet and the crowds of summer are gone, making it more affordable and more enjoyable. If you go in the first 2 weeks of December, you’ll avoid the holiday pricing.

Be sure to relax on Maui’s beautiful beaches! For year-round snorkeling fun, Black Rock at Kaanapali Beach is a must. Don’t forget your snorkel gear so you can go when you want! Or, watch the surfers at D.T. Fleming Beach on the North Shore.

If you’re looking for adventure, hike the Waihee Ridge Trail . You’ll get epic views of the valley and coast. Just be sure to wear hiking shoes for this one – the trail can get muddy after it rains.

And if you’re up for a road trip, driving the popular Road to Hana is one of the best road trips USA and an experience you’ll never forget. Be sure to make it to Wai’ānapanapa State Park and see the black sand beach (reservations required).

Side note: if you’re really into unique beaches, a must-see is the Black Sand Beach Vieques in Puerto Rico. So stunning!

Anyway, for a more remote drive, consider the Kahekili Highway. This one-lane road offers stunning views and adventure like hiking, waterfalls and more.

Maui is an ideal destination for the best beaches in December, and one you’ll definitely want to consider!

5. St. George, Utah

One of the most unique spots on this list of warm places to visit in USA in December is St. George, Utah. Nestled on the southwest corner of the state, it’s just minutes away from Arizona and Nevada.

A great launching spot for a Utah national parks road trip, St. George is located about an hour west of Zion National Park. You could certainly take a day trip to Zion, but it may have a bit of snow in December.

There’s so many things to do in St. George. The downtown is rich in history, with museums and parks to learn about the region in years – and centuries past. From the dinosaurs to the Paiute natives and then finally settled by Mormons in the 1800’s.

Of course there’s plenty of outdoor activities in St. George – even in December! Snow Canyon State Park is just 15 minutes north of town, and worth the visit. With 20 miles of hiking trails through petrified dunes, lava tubes and of course, stunning overlooks, it’s a hiker’s dream.

For more adventure, consider a sunrise hot air balloon ride near the city. Or, rent a sled and sandbar at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, a little over an hour south of town.

6. Siesta Key, Florida (another favorite on this list of warm places to visit in December in USA)

Ranked as one of the best beaches in the USA over and over again, Siesta Key is an amazing getaway. Although high’s in the mid 70’s may not seem like great swimming weather, it still means you can enjoy this beachy destination.

You’ll get more of the beach to yourself in December, which is one of the perks of traveling to Siesta Key in winter. Fly a kite or build a sandcastle. Take beach chairs or a lightweight beach towel and just enjoy the sound of the gentle waves hitting the shore.

And when you need a break from the beach (if that’s even a thing😉), you can head into Siesta Key Village where you’ll find the cutest town square . With boutique shops and restaurants, there’s plenty to do here, too. Be sure to try Meaney’s Mini Donuts & Coffee House (the cinnamon ones are the best).

7. Temecula, California

If you are ready to escape the cold, snowy weather for somewhere warmer this December, look no further than Temecula, California. Located in Southern California, just an hour’s drive from San Diego, this city has plenty to do – including wine tasting, shopping, and more! 

In December, Temecula’s high temperature is just shy of 70°F, with only 2 days of precipitation, so you can expect warm, sunny days. And there’s no better way to enjoy the beautiful weather than with a visit to Temecula Valley Wine Country!

Temecula is home to 50+ local wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms . Some of the best wineries in Temecula include Wilson Creek Winery, Leoness Cellars, and Baily Vineyard & Winery. 

December is a fabulous time to visit Temecula because of the fun holiday events you can attend, like the Temecula Chilled Holiday Market and Santa’s Electric Light Parade in Old Town Temecula. Despite the warm weather, you can even ice skate at the Peltzer Ice Skating Rink or Temecula on Ice during the holidays. 

Old Town Temecula is a fantastic location to base your trip if you want to walk around and soak up the sunshine, as it’s one of the best winter sun destinations in the US.

You can eat at some of the best restaurants in Old Town Temecula , like The Goat & Vine or 1909 Temecula, or you can shop at the dozens of quaint boutiques selling unique items, like wine-barrel furniture, olive oils and more.

8. South Padre Island, Texas

If you’re looking for an amazing warm destination to visit in December in the USA, then South Padre Island is the perfect destination for you. 

After all, temperatures are usually around 72 degrees during the day and then around 57 degrees in the evening throughout the month of December.

Plus, the weather here is usually pretty dry, making it the perfect place to relax, take a walk through the Padre Island National Seashore, and enjoy the single biggest undeveloped barrier island in the world.  Additionally, December is off-season. Therfore, crowds will be minimal and hotel prices will be quite reasonable. 

As a result, you can quietly enjoy some of the best things to do in South Padre Island , like take some time to explore the historic Port Isabel Lighthouse from 1852 . In fact, it’s the only lighthouse on the coast of Texas that is open to visitors and makes for a fun place to visit. 

Then, learn about local wildlife at the Sea Turtle Conservation Center. In fact, this amazing wildlife rescue center helps upwards of 100 turtles per year and is an ideal place to learn all about these fascinating creatures. 

You can also visit the South Padre island Birding Center and admire local populations of Buff-bellied hummingbirds, White Ibis, and Red-winged Blackbirds as you stroll along the picturesque boardwalk here.

9. New Orleans, Louisiana

If you’re looking for a place to escape winter’s frigid clutches and have a little fun in December, there is no better place than New Orleans! While the weather in New Orleans can be oppressive at certain times of the year, December is ideal as it averages in the 60s – 70s which is perfect for sightseeing!

You might think The Big Easy is only a party town during Mardi Gras – wrong! December ushers in plenty of its own one-of-a-kind holiday fun.

The beginning of December kicks off with the Krewe of Jingle – a downtown holiday parade with special appearances from Mr. and Mrs. Clause. New Orleans knows how to host a parade, so this is one you should make sure you don’t miss!

In the middle of December, head to historic Lafayette Square to enjoy the LUNA Fête festival . Over a long weekend, the city celebrates with awe-inspiring light shows; it generally brings in over 100,000 attendees!

In addition to the holiday fun, another great way to get to know the city is on a walking tour. This is an especially great activity if this is your  first time visiting New Orleans  — there are a range of tour options, from learning about Voodoo to exploring the chic Garden District.

10. Oahu, Hawaii (a destination full of the best beaches in December)

When you think of a warm December getaway, Oahu may be one of the first destinations to come to mind. And with its stunning white sand beaches, epic mountains, and abundant wildlife, it’s no surprise this is one of the most popular destinations, come December. 

Thanks to its location close to the equator, Oahu enjoys temperatures in the low 80s in December, which is warm enough to break out the tank tops, sun dresses and even a long travel skirt .

In December the island may experience a rain shower or two. These showers usually only last for a few hours and should not be too much of a hindrance on your outdoor adventures. 

Many visitors primarily focus their explorations of the island to Honolulu, but there’s so much else to see and do here. For example, one of the best things to do in Oahu in December is to watch the professional surfers take on the big waves of the North Shore . Check out the Banzai Pipeline or Waimea Bay Beach Park, which can see waves up to 25 feet in height! 

While snorkeling along the North Shore is probably not advisable in December, given the aforementioned monster waves, you can still check out some of the best snorkeling in Oahu by heading to Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve, just 10 minutes east of Honolulu .

Here, the waters stay calm year round, where you can swim with and observe the 400 species of fish, turtles and other marine life. Bring your own snorkel gear to hit the water when and where you want while on Oahu!

11. Disney World, Orlando, Florida

The happiest place on Earth, aka Disney World, is an easy pick for any families out there looking for iconic warm places to visit in December in USA. 

After all, Disney World comes alive at this time of year with festive holiday decor and fun seasonal events like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. 

Plus, the weather at  Disney in December  is super comfortable throughout the month since the average high is 74 F and the average daily low is 56 F. 

However, to avoid insane crowds, try to time your visit for the first week of December. This is when kids are still in the school and when the park is less crowded. 

You should also try and buy Park Hoppers so that you can avoid more crowded parks on an as needed basis. 

Additionally, try and visit Magic Kingdom on Party Days and avoid parks with extra Magic Hours to get the most out of your visit. 

Then, make time to enjoy seasonal activities like Tony’s Most Merriest Town Square Party (an add-on experiences for extra fees), Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks Dessert Party at Tomorrowland Terrace or Plaza Garden Viewing (another add-on event), A Frozen Holiday Wish (happens nightly all month long) and more. 

You can also attend the International Festival of the Holidays at Epcot before spending the night at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.  It’s probably the best Deluxe resort in Disneyworld and features an island theme that is accentuated by leis that are presented to you as you walk in the door.

12. Augusta, Georgia

One of the most underrated spots on this list of warm places to visit in USA in December is Augusta, Georgia . A southern city full of charm, Augusta is known for outdoor recreation, historical sites and hist vibrant restaurant scene.

Tour downtown finding fun murals, shopping and dining. A foodie’s delight, Augusta is known for outdoor patios, which you’ll find especially inviting in the warm sun during mid-day. Bring layers for the evenings as it gets chilly!

One of Augusta’s top attractions is the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Walk the trails and soak in the peaceful nature all around you. Or, get a little more active on the 32 miles of biking trails through the Forks Area Trail System.

And you can’t visit Augusta without a stroll along the Augusta Riverwalk . It’s a fun, brick trail along the Savannah River! If traveling with kids, they’ll love the playground on the Riverwalk.

During December, the city has holiday festivals and markets. Enjoy historic holiday tours where you can visit homes from the 1800’s, including the childhood home of President Woodrow.

13. San Diego, California (perfect for this list of warm places to visit in December in USA)

San Diego is an incredible place to visit during December. With incredible weather and tons of fabulous attractions, you can’t go wrong with visiting this Southern California City! 

You can expect temperatures around the high 60’s during the day and in the 40’s at night. Some of the best things to add to your San Diego itinerary in December include wandering through the famous Balboa Park.

Balboa Park is comprised of 1,200 acres. You can explore beautiful gardens and dozens of museums including The San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Air and Space Museum, Museum of Us, San Diego Natural History Museum and more! Additionally, the famous San Diego Zoo is also located in Balboa Park.

The Old Town San Diego Historic State Park is another must-visit. Here you can indulge in amazing food while experiencing San Diego’s Spanish roots and history.

A special experience in San Diego during December is whale watching . Around 20,000 Grey Whales start migrating in mid-December. Seals also start giving birth around mid-December at the La Jolla Caves. You will likely also be able to see the Sea Lions in La Jolla too!

14. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona is the perfect sunny escape in December! Excellent for various travel styles, there’s hiking and outdoor adventures, as well as low-key things to do in town. With mild temperatures and minimal crowds, December is a great time to visit Sedona.

Take the Sedona Trolley around town to get acquainted without the worry of driving or traffic. Visit the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village for just that – shopping.

Go hiking or horseback riding at Cathedral Rock or Oak Creek Canyon. If you’re traveling with kids, they’ll love jumping around the unique landscape at Slide Rock State Park .

Perhaps the most popular hiking trail in the area is Devil’s Bridge Trail . At 3.9 miles and rated as moderate, this trail is perfect for an afternoon hike in December! Bring your grippy hiking shoes for this one, as the rock stairs leading up to the bridge can get pretty slick.

For the best views of the incredible landscape in Sedona, head up to Airport Mesa. There’s a parking lot at the overlook so it doesn’t require much hiking at all. It’s also a great spot for stargazing!

15. Culebra, Puerto Rico (perfect for visiting the best beaches in December)

Quite possibly the warmest place in the US in December, Culebra Puerto Rico is an amazing destination you’ll love. Puerto Rico was previously mentioned above, but Culebra is so spectacular it deserves it’s own spot.

Culebra Puerto Rico is located just 18 miles off the eastern side of Mainland Puerto Rico . Getting to Culebra requires a ferry ride or small plane, but it’s so worth it!

Home to one of the most incredible beaches in the Caribbean, Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico is one of the best beaches you’ll ever see, and a phenomenal place to visit for the best beaches in December.

This crescent-shaped beach sits along rolling hills and its undeveloped land makes it seem from a fairytale. With plenty of parking and amenities, you’ll want to spend a day – or more – at Flamenco Beach.

Spend some time in with the sea turtles while snorkeling at Tamarindo Beach. Or, for some solitude, visit the lesser-known Zoni Beach. And when you’re hungry, be sure to head downtown to grab a bite.

For couples traveling, consider the cozy cottages with phenomenal views – Aleli Cottages . For more space, try the Oceania Villas .

You’ll fall in love with Culebra. It’s definitely one of the best on this list of warm places to visit in December in USA!

16. Florida Keys

The snow is falling, the temperatures keep dropping and you’re ready to escape to a tropical paradise. One of the best warm places to visit in December is the Florida Keys!

Stretching approximately 120 miles from Key Largo to the southernmost point in the continental USA (Key West), the Florida Keys are the perfect getaway if you are looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation. With average December temperatures in the high 70’s, you’ll never want to leave! 

Your best and most affordable option would be to fly into Miami and rent a car to make the Miami to Key West road trip . From here, you can take your time exploring each island and all they have to offer. You’ll want to spend at least one night in Key Largo, Islamorada and Key West. 

The list of things to do in the Florida Keys is never-ending. Depending on how much time you have, you will have to decide between scuba diving in John Pennekamp State Park, deep sea fishing at Robbie’s, parasailing over the sparkling blue water or simply relaxing on the beach. 

After your road trip of adventures, you’ll definitely want to stay in Key West at Tiki Suites.  There are 2 suites located in the middle of the ocean! You’ll have nothing but the ocean surrounding you as you relax and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience!

17. St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

The US Virgin Islands are a great place to visit in December for a number of reasons, especially St. Thomas . First, the weather is absolutely beautiful during this time of year.

The average high temperature is about 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average low is only about 75 degrees. This makes it the perfect time of year to enjoy all that the islands have to offer, including the beaches, without having to deal with crowds of people.

The beaches on St. Thomas are calm and perfect for swimming, and there are plenty of water sports activities to keep everyone entertained. Magen’s Bay is the most popular beach on the island and is great for families.

Coki Beach and Sapphire Beach are also a lot of fun! Sapphire Beach, especially is a great place to base during your stay because Sapphire Beach Resort offers discounts on snorkeling equipment rental to its guests. There are also several pools and a restaurant there, in case you don’t feel like going elsewhere to eat.

December is also a great time to visit St. Thomas and the US Virgin Islands because it’s one of the quieter times of the year.

While the islands do see a significant number of tourists during the winter months, it’s nothing compared to the summer crowds. This means that you’ll be able to enjoy all that the US Virgin Islands have to offer without having to worry about fighting for space on the beach or in restaurants.

18. Santa Barbara, California

Known for its incredible Spanish architecture, wineries, expansive beaches and moderate temperatures, Santa Barbara is always a good idea. Deserving on this list of warm places to visit in December in USA, Santa Barbara offers sunshine to those wishing to escape grey skies or snow elsewhere.

Dive into culture, history and art in Santa Barbara. See a performance at the Lobero Theater, visit the Old Mission Santa Barbara, get lost in the beauty of Santa Barbara Museum of Art or shop and dine on State Street.

Of course, you’ll want to visit the beach while you’re at the California Coast! Santa Barbara is one of the best stops on a Pacific Coast Highway vacation from San Francisco to San Diego road trip . The area’s best beaches along the way are East Beach, Hendry’s Beach and Goleta Beach Park.

December is a fabulous time to visit Santa Barbara, as the city is full of events and festivities . Watch the boat parade through the harbor at Stearns Wharf. Shop for someone special at the city’s annual Folk and Tribal Arts Marketplace.

And don’t forget about New Year’s Eve in Santa Barbara! For a night to remember, try a champagne cruise, catch a drag show, do a bar crawl or so much more. It’s a great way to celebrate the end of the year!

19. Kauai, Hawaii (another favorite on this list of best warm places to visit in December in USA)

You gotta go to Kauai! It’s not only one of the best warm places to visit in December in USA, it’s also an incredible destination for adventure and relaxation! Known as ‘the garden isle’ for its lush vegetation and epic waterfalls, it has stunning coastlines unlike any other spot on this list – or in the world.

You’ll want to see the Waimea Canyon, AKA the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Explore it’s epic views from the inside by hiking the Waimea Canyon Trail . Right down the road is the Kalalau Lookout in Koke’e State Park, to see the stunning NaPali Coast.

For sunshine in December, you’ll want to stay in the Poipu area to get the least amount of rain . Popular for awesome beaches like Poipu Beach or Shipwreck Beach, the waves can be the smallest in the winter, which is perfect for a warm getaway to the beach.

Kauai is home to some amazing food too. On the North Shore, try Kalypso Island Bar & Grill in Hanalei. You’ve gotta try the acai bowls at Java Kai in Kapaa, or the famous Hula Pie at Keoki’s Paradise in Koloa. Some of the best places to eat in Kauai won’t break the bank, either, like Da Crack Mexican Grinds.

Early December is a fabulous time to visit Kauai as it’s the shoulder season. The pricing is lower than late December over the holiday, and the crowds are much fewer, meaning you’ll have less waiting at restaurants and attractions.

20. Bisbee, Arizona

The quaint, little town of Bisbee, AZ is attracting winter travelers from all over the world due to its stunning beauty and quirky vibe.

Why visit Bisbee in December? It is truly the best month, boasting highs in the mid-50s and lows in the low-30s. Being an inherently dry climate, you can expect little to no precipitation this time of year. Instead, you’ll find clear skies, colorful sunsets and more stars than you can imagine. 

In visiting Bisbee you can expect a true getaway. The town is small, with just over 5,000 residents. However, what it lacks in population, it makes up for in charm.

A haven for artists and other creative types, the town is full of murals, quirky antique shops, charming cafes and relaxed breweries. Make sure to spend some time shopping in downtown, visiting the nearby ghost town of Lowell and viewing the Lavender Pit, which is an open copper mine located just outside of town.

If you’re lucky enough to spend some time  road tripping in the area , you should also check out Saguaro National Park and Chiricahua National Monument, which are both less than 2 hours away. 

You can’t go wrong with booking a boutique hotel in the main part of town. If you are looking to get close to the action, try the  Copper Queen Hotel . If you would like something a little bit quieter, the  School House Inn Bed & Breakfast  may be more your speed.

Either way, you are sure to enjoy a picturesque and relaxing stay in the heart of the American Southwest, one of the best warm places to visit in December!

21. Anna Maria Island, Florida (another one of my favorites for warm places to visit in USA in December)

It’s small-town charm and crisp, white beaches will draw you in. Anna Maria Island is definitely one of the most fabulous (and underrated) warm places to visit in USA in December!

Located just an hour west of Sarasota, this island is the picturesque Florida vacation destination. Lacking chain hotels or restaurants, you’ll find boutique shops, fun places to eat and awesome beaches.

Check out the Anna Maria Pier for unique views of the island and local waters. If you’re lucky, one of the local fevers (groups) of sting rays will be lurking in the waters below! Hunt for seashells at Coquina Beach, hang out the beach at Bean Point or find some adrenaline in a parasailing adventure.

Celebrate the holidays in Anna Maria Island by visiting the cute Bridge Street, covered in twinkling lights . Or catch one of the island’s boat parades, where locals and tour companies decorate their boats with holiday lights and show them off during a water parade.

December is a special time on Anna Maria Island, and with so many unique things to do on Anna Maria Island , you won’t get bored!

22. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

When planning a summer vacation, Myrtle Beach might come to mind, but have you ever considered retreating to beautiful South Carolina in December? This southern beach town is the perfect retreat if you’re trying to escape the cold and enjoy some warmer weather.

In December, Myrtle Beach offers weather in the 60s with mostly sunny days. Visiting this month means very little crowds, cheaper room rates at places like the Marriott Myrtle Beach Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes .

One of the  locals’ favorite things to do in Myrtle Beach  is to visit Brookgreen Gardens, located just 30 minutes outside of downtown. The gardens are an amazing destination year round, but from the end of November to the beginning of January, they hold the Nights of a Thousand Candles. The whole property is lit with over a million lights and almost 3,000 hand-lit candles. You can listen to holiday music, admire the lights and drink some hot apple cider, getting in the holiday spirit.

Spend another evening at one of Myrtle Beach’s famous theaters for a holiday themed show! Pirates Voyage, The Alabama Theater and The Carolina Opry all hold special holiday themed shows during December and are so much fun for all ages.

The daytimes will be warm enough to walk on the beach, eat fresh seafood outside on the boardwalk and ride the massive Ferris Wheel. Try the Sea Captain’s House or River City Cafe for some of the best food with ocean views!

23. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Joshua Tree is an incredible place to visit in December for warm weather and sunshine! The desert landscape means that unlike most national parks in the US, summers are too hot for outdoor adventures. 

December brings perfect weather for hiking in Joshua Tree , as daytime temperatures are comfortable , usually in the high 50s or low 60s. It does get chilly at night, so be prepared with some layers – especially if you’re camping, or if you plan to be out in the mornings or evenings!

December is also less crowded than spring or fall, when the park is most popular – but, starting your day early or staying in the park close to sunset will be the best way to avoid crowds. Some of the best hikes in Joshua Tree National Park include the Hidden Valley Nature Trail, Ryan Mountain and the Lost Palms Oasis Trail.

Some other great things to do in the park include stargazing, off-roading and wildlife viewing. You can see lizards, snakes, tortoises, birds, and if you’re lucky, maybe some big horn sheep, foxes and bobcats!

When you’re in Joshua Tree, you can camp in the park, check out some of the quirky vacation rentals nearby, or stay at the Joshua Tree Inn.

24. San Antonio, Texas

If you’re looking for the best warm places to visit in December, then San Antonio, Texas should be on your radar! With sunshine and temperatures in the 60’s during the day, you’ll be exploring this fun city in warm weather, a nice escape from the cold.

The San Antonio River Walk is the shining star of this destination, but it offers visitors so much more!

Explore The Alamo – the location of the Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution in 1863 (timed ticket entry required). For more history and art, visit the San Antonio Museum of Art, Brisco Western Art Museum or the McNay Art Museum.

25. Page, Arizona

If you’re looking to spend time in the American southwest, Page, Arizona is one of the best places to visit. It’s home to some of the most popular places to visit in Arizona including Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. December is a great time to visit because the weather is beautiful. 

In the month of December, the days are warmer and the night cold so it’s a good idea to make sure you bring layers. There is little to no rain here during the month of December. These are great temperatures for hiking and going on outdoor adventures in the area. 

There are lots of great  places to stay in Page . If you’re looking for a unique experience, try glamping with Under Canvas . For a traditional hotel stay, consider Country Inn & Suites by Radisson or the Hyatt Place Page Lake Powell .

One of the best things to do in Page is tour Antelope Canyon . This beautiful slot canyon is one of the most famous in the country, and it’s an amazing experience to walk through. It’s gorgeous!

December is a popular time to tour Antelope Canyon, so you’ll want to make your reservations well in advance. After your tour of Antelope Canyon, be sure to leave some time to walk out to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook.

There are lots of other fun destinations in this area, including Las Vegas, Southern Utah and Sedona. Page, AZ is a great destination to include if you’re going on a road trip through this area, and one of the best warm places to visit in December in USA.

26. Clearwater Beach, Florida

Clearwater Beach is one of the best winter sun destinations! Located just 25 miles west of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast, it’s one of the most popular beaches in the country.

Temperatures consistently stay between 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter, but the crowds are significantly less during this time of year. This makes it the perfect time to be able to relax in comfort without having to fight for a free spot on the sand or get overheated by the scorching summer sun. 

Unlike the majority of beaches on mainland USA, Clearwater Beach has powder white sand and turquoise blue water. It’s absolutely beautiful, and the sunsets on this beach are even prettier!

There’s even an entire nightly festival that was created just to celebrate the sunsets! It’s called the Sunsets at Pier 60 Festival, and it starts 2 hours before sunset every evening. When deciding  where to stay in Clearwater Beach , a hotel right by the pier is your best pick to keep you close to the action. Opal Sands is a top-rated choice!

Boat tours are another popular activity during December. There are dolphin-spotting cruises and even pirate cruises for kids.

You know what’s awesome? Las Vegas in winter, as opposed to summertime. 🤣 Las Vegas deserves a spot on this list because of its entertainment and food scene. Not to mention the outdoor adventures that are perfect during December!

Perfect for a long weekend away in December, Las Vegas is home to countless entertainment opportunities. Get concert or show tickets and you’ll be sure to see top-notch performances!

Of course there’s gambling and clubs, but also plenty of things to do that don’t include being on The Strip your entire trip. For some quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of the city lights, check out Red Rock Canyon scenic drive . A timed entry reservation is required in December. Bring your hiking shoes and hit the trails!

Or enjoy one of the many day trips from Las Vegas. Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam are cool to see in person. And if you’re really up for some cool sights, be sure to do a Las Vegas to Zion National Park day trip for incredible canyon views!

Okay, if you’re looking for a family-friendly getaway to a warm winter sun destination, then Gulf Shores, Alabama is for you! Offering mild temperatures year-round and some of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast , you’ll fall in love with Gulf Shores and its sister city, Orange Beach.

One of the most fun things to do in December in Gulf Shores is a day at The Track. With go karts, mini golf, roller coaster and kiddie rides and an arcade, you could literally get lost here!

Head over to The Wharf at Orange Beach for some serious entertainment and dining. Take a Ferris wheel ride, enjoy some laser tag, grab ice cream or enjoy some water-front dining.

In December, The Wharf hosts a variety of winter and holiday festivities including an ice skating rink, horse-drawn carriage rides under twinkling lights and shopping events.

29. Big Island, Hawaii (one of the best winter sun destinations)

One of the best warm US destinations in December is the Big Island of Hawaii. People can escape the chilly weather on the Mainland and enjoy a tropical island without needing a passport.

If you’re visiting the Big Island during the holidays, you can enjoy many island-style decorations and community events.

Another fun Big Island activity is stargazing at Mauna Kea. Winter is a great time to do this because the sun sets a bit earlier than in the other seasons, so you won’t have to stay up as late to see the dazzling stars.

December is also whale watching season in Hawaii. It’s best to see them on a whale watching tour .

One of the unique  things to do on the Big Island  is swimming with manta rays. Luckily, these manta ray tours run throughout the winter so you can participate in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The top attraction on the Big Island is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This is the only place to see lava in Hawaii. It’s important to check conditions before your trip to see if and where the lava is flowing.

The weather on Kona in December is typically in the low 80s during the day and the upper 60s at night. The Hilo side of the island is usually rainier than the Kona side.

And you should pack warm layers if visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or Mauna Kea. There is often snow at the summit of Mauna Kea!

A few great places to stay on the Big Island are the Royal Kona Resort in Kona and the Grand Naniloa Hotel in Hilo.

30. Catalina Island, California

Off the coast of Southern California is Santa Catalina Island, and it definitely deserves a spot on this list of warm places to visit in December in the US. Just an hour ferry ride from Long Beach, getting to Catalina Island is convenient from the LA area.

Visit Catalina Island in early December to enjoy off-season pricing and fewer crowds than later in the month. With temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s, pack layers and enjoy the sunshine on the island!

Find adventure on the water with kayaking, parasailing or a submarine tour. Enjoy the island views by soaring through the air on a zipline or hiking. Try the Avalon Bay Trail with water views, or for more of a challenge, hike the Hermit Gulch Trail.

Downtown Avalon is such a charming harbor town. It’s as cute as ever with brightly colored shops and homes, which reminds me more of Europe than California! Enjoy strolling the Green Pleasure Pier and grabbing some delicious food from a variety of locally-owned restaurants.

31. Phoenix, Arizona

One of the best warm US destinations in December is Phoenix! With sunshine and only a few days of rain, it’s perfect weather for indoor and outdoor activities.

Phoenix is a great destination for families, couples and solo travelers of all ages. One of the best places to include on your Phoenix itinerary is Papago Park. Stroll through the Desert Botanical Garden, where you can see over 50,000 plants!

Have a picnic at the Papago Ponds or hike the short 0.3 miles to Hole in the Rock. Animal lovers will enjoy spending time at the Phoenix Zoo, also located at Papago Park.

The city of Phoenix and neighboring Scottsdale really celebrate the holidays big, too. Enjoy pop-up ice skating events, various festivals and multiple light shows throughout the area, including 2 drive-through animated light shows.

And of course, you can’t come to Phoenix without eating delicious food! For the best Mexican food in town, try Taco Guild or Barrio Cafe. Or enjoy a variety of local restaurants in downtown Phoenix on 7th Street.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or longer vacation, Phoenix is one of the best warm places to visit in December in USA.

32. Destin, Florida (warm places to visit in December in USA – a must-see destination)

Destin, Florida is a beautiful place to visit during December. The weather is perfect for spending time on the beaches, and there are plenty of great activities and attractions to enjoy. 

Destin Harbor is especially festive during this time of year, with decorated boats and lights everywhere.  Every year in December, HarborWalk Village has the Destin Boat Parade with fireworks and activities for everyone. 

The city of Destin also has an annual Christmas Parade which covers most of the town. This parade is a must-see for anyone in town in December and features floats, marching bands, and of course, Santa Claus himself. 

Destin Commons and The Village of Baytowne Wharf both have events going on throughout the month of December. Destin Commons has pictures with Santa and Baytowne Wharf has a holiday concert series in December and even an ice skating rink!  

Other places to visit in December in the Destin area include Crab Island, James Lee Beach and Norriego Point.  If you’re looking for state parks, Henderson Beach State Park is great and offers a beautiful beach, walking trails and camping. Topsail Hill State Park is in nearby Santa Rosa Beach and offers many amenities, as well. 

A great place to stay in Destin is The Palms of Destin , which is right in the heart of the city, near Henderson Beach State Park and The Track (go-karts and mini-golf).

Lake Tahoe, California

If you’re looking for one of the best winter destinations on the west coast of the USA then you can’t beat Lake Tahoe, California.

After all, this incredible alpine lake sits high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is home to some of the best skiing in the United States.

In fact, the skiing here is so good that the region is home to upwards of fourteen different resorts , one of which, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows , was the site of the 1960 winter Olympics.

So, if you’re looking to channel your inner snow bunny then Lake Tahoe is the perfect place for you. Because while you can go skiing, you can also enjoy other things to do in Lake Tahoe in winter , like skating in Heavenly Village – a place that is home to the only outdoor rink on the south shore.

You can also head to Mountain Rose and do a bit of snowshoeing at Tahoe Meadows or Chickadee Ridge before enjoying some of the best tubing in the region at Adventure Mountain at the top of Echo Summit.

Just be sure to dress warmly since highs only get to around 44F while lows dip down to 25F .

However, if you get a little chilly then you can always spend the day warming up inside your room at the Edgewood Tahoe . It’s an incredible, 5-star resort in South Lake Tahoe that will have you feeling replenished in no time since the site features a full spa.

Alternatively, you can book a vacation rental around the lake, many feature gorgeous views and great amenities.

Oahu, Hawaii

The island of Oahu is a perfect sample of Hawaii at its best: great scenery, hikes, beaches, and warm weather year-round . Winter is a great time to visit and soak up the sun! The weather at this time is warm and nice, without being too hot. Daytime temperatures in the winter are usually around 75 Fahrenheit (24 Celcius).

Oahu is loaded with great beaches in every corner of the island, so it’s hard to know where to start. If you want to see a quieter and less touristy side of the island, drive up to the north shore ! It has some of the best waves for surfing , and there’s a more laid-back feel compared to Waikiki.

Some of the best north shore beaches in Oahu to visit include Laniakea and Sunset Beach , which are both very high quality. Sunset Beach is known for its amazing sunsets (of course), and you can often see turtles relaxing on the beach at Laniakea. Just remember to keep your distance and give the turtles plenty of space.

Winter is also the best time to see whales in Oahu! The whale watching season generally runs from December to May , as this is when the whales like to come to the warm waters of Hawaii. You can often see whales from the shore at places like Makapuu , which also has a nice lighthouse that you can visit with a short family-friendly hike.

A great hotel option in the main tourist area of Oahu is the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort , located in Waikiki. For something a bit more intimate, check out the vacation homes around the island, many feature gorgeous oceanfront views and are steps away from quiet beaches.

Overall, this island in Hawaii is a fantastic place to visit in the winter!

Phoenix & Scottsdale, Arizona

When much of the country is blanketed in snow, one of the best places to visit is Phoenix. There are a lot of fun things to do in Phoenix and Scottsdale in the winter.

The weather is simply incredible in the winter months. Daytime temperatures usually range from the 60s to the 80s, and though it can hit freezing at night, it’s generally in the 40s and 50s. 

Take to the mountains in and around the city for some of the best hiking in the country. There are trails all over ranging from easy to difficult. Some of the most popular hikes are at Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, the Superstition Mountains, and South Mountain Park. 

Be sure to head to the Desert Botanical Garden to fall in love with the desert and enjoy the incredible weather. For a little bit of local interest and history, check out Taliesin West , architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s summer home. 

If you’re looking for a great hotel in the middle of the action, look in downtown Phoenix. It’s right off the highway and you can get anywhere easily. The Clarendon Hotel is a great boutique hotel option in a historic building with a fun rooftop bar . Their restaurant is wonderful as well. You’ll also find plenty of nice vacation rentals around town.

You can find almost any type of restaurant you’re looking for and many cater to specific diets like vegan or gluten-free dining. Green and the Coronado are local favorites. Most restaurants have ample options to choose from, so you can’t go wrong.

When the weather gets cold, Phoenix is at its best! Don’t miss a trip to this vibrant city during the winter.

Yosemite National Park, California

The vast majority of the crowds that visit Yosemite National Park visit during the busy summer season, which leaves the park fairly empty during the winter months, making it one of the best destinations for a West Coast winter getaway.

Unfortunately for them, they are missing out on one of the best times to visit as the park’s granite peaks are blanketed, and the trees are flocked with snow. 

The valley is at its most photogenic point, and most of the valley’s attractions are still accessible , even with a light layer of snow on the ground.

A visit during the winter can include hiking on the lower elevation trails and ice skating at the Curry Village , with views of the iconic Half Dome in the background. 

For the adventurous types, many of the park’s trails are open during winter for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing , where you can spot wildlife and take in majestic views away from the crowds. 

The weather in Yosemite Valley can vary greatly during the winter months but remains relatively mild compared to the higher elevations in the park. The lower elevation in the valley means the temperatures are warmer, with daytime highs often in the low 50s.

Even though Yosemite Valley only gets 29 inches of snow annually, it’s best to be prepared for the weather to change in a moment. Pack some extra gear and make sure to carry chains , as they may be required if a storm hits the park.

Normally the best places to stay in Yosemite , like the Yosemite Valley Lodge , requires booking six months in advance, but not during the winter. You can book at one of the historic hotels in the park on short notice and wake up to views of the valley right from the balcony of your hotel room.

San Francisco, California

San Francisco is an excellent West Coast winter destination for solo travelers, couples, and families. You can easily spend a week in San Francisco with the amazing list of things to do here.

San Francisco winters are cold but it doesn’t snow here . The daytime temperatures are still pleasant to do sightseeing and explore the city.  Being on the coast, it can be quite windy so it’s always a good idea to carry a warm jacket even if it looks sunny outside. 

The Golden Gate Bridge is the most iconic landmark of San Francisco and right so. It is an engineering wonder and a must-see. Walking across Golden Gate Park and exploring its many attractions, like the Japanese tea gardens and the California Academy of Sciences , is a great activity.

Fisherman’s wharf is the most touristy area of San Francisco, where you will find Pier 39 with restaurants and rides and Ghiradelli Chocolate Square , two famous landmarks.

For example, many of the best hikes in Olympic National Park , like the Hall of Mosses in the Hoh Rainforest or the Hole-in-the-Wall trail along Rialto Beach, are still accessible and almost always snow-free . And bonus, with the crowds of the summer gone, you’re likely to get these trails all to yourself! Just be sure to pack a warm rain jacket – this is the rainy Pacific Northwest, after all!

If, instead, you’re looking for a winter wonderland, the Olympic Mountains offer those adventures as well! For example, head up to Hurricane Ridge to go snowshoeing and take in the panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountain peaks.

Nearby, you’ll also find the Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboard area , where you can enjoy snowboarding, skiing, tubing, or sledding in a family-friendly environment, all with a spectacular backdrop. 

Olympic National Park is massive- almost a million acres!- so picking a conveniently located home base is imperative. Port Angeles is an excellent springboard for some of the most popular attractions in the park , including Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent – try booking a stay at the Olympic Lodge , offering an outdoor heated swimming pool and a hot tub to relax in after all your wintery adventures.

Leavenworth, Washington

If you’re looking for a winter wonderland , look no further than Leavenworth, Washington. This town, tucked away in the snowy Cascade Mountains, is adorable, thanks to its downtown, full of Bavarian-style buildings . Whether you’re looking to stroll around a charming village or have epic outdoor adventures , Leavenworth has something for you, come winter.

For enjoying the town itself, Christmas in Leavenworth is next level , with over half a million Christmas lights decorating the Bavarian buildings lining its streets, chestnuts literally being roasted over an open fire, and carolers strolling about.

If you can’t schedule your visit in December, not to worry – Leavenworth’s Christmas decorations stay up through February and the town offers a host of other winter festivals , like the Winter Karneval and Timbrrr! Music Festival.

Alternatively, if you’d rather immerse yourself in Leavenworth’s outdoor scene, there are plenty of snowy activities to enjoy , like snowshoeing at Lake Wenatchee State Park or Plain Valley or Nordic skiing at the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club . Afterward, you can head back to town and grab a mug of gluhwein at one of the many wineries to warm up. 

Leavenworth is certainly a winter wonderland this time of year- you should expect cold temperatures, ranging from the low 20s to the low 30s . If it’s any consolation, you’re likely to see some snowfall while you’re here, the perfect complement to Leavenworth’s cozy vibes.

Make sure to stay someplace with an outdoor hot tub , like the Bavarian Lodge , where you can warm up and enjoy the stellar views of the surrounding Cascades. You’ll also find plenty of cabins and chalets with a hot tub, fireplace, and great views available for rent.

Kauai, Hawaii

If you’re looking for a winter getaway on the west coast that requires a little additional effort to get to (but is so worth it!), book a ticket to Kauai in the Hawaiian islands!

The reason that Kauai is the perfect winter destination is that it is tropical and will always have the temperatures that you desire ! While it might be rainier than in the summer months, you will definitely find some glimpses of the sun and calm weather throughout your trip. Expect comfortable highs of around 72F (22C) all winter long and around 15 days of rain (which will be sporadic).

Since it is the low season in Kauai, you will find that tours are easier, and sometimes cheaper, to book. A fantastic tour to sign up for is a helicopter tour of the Na Pali Coast. Another great option for active travelers is to take a kayaking tour on the Wailua River to the Secret Waterfall.

However, the absolute best thing to do on Kauai in the winter is to rent a car and take a road trip! This will allow you to see the different landscapes of the island and the contrasts between places like Waimea Canyon (where it is dry with red soil) to Hanalei (where it is green and like a rainforest).

During the winter months, the beaches in the south around Poipu are calm and perfect for snorkeling and the beaches in the north around Princeville and Hanalei Bay are wild as they have the winter swells coming in. These are only a good idea for experienced surfers!

There are many hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals you can book on Kauai during the winter (and prices will be cheaper) and one of the best budget-friendly options is The Kauai Inn located near Lihue by the Nawiliwili Harbor. It has an outdoor pool and breakfast is included.

San Diego, California

Another popular West Coast winter vacation spot amongst all kinds of travelers is sunny San Diego. The Southern California beach town experiences average temperatures of around 63 degrees during the wintertime, which means always perfect weather to go out and explore the city.

No trip to San Diego is complete without a visit to at least one of the numerous stunning beaches . And while the scenery and sun are often enough to convince anyone to go to the beach, the city also has amazing surf opportunities for surfers of all levels . So if you’ve been wanting to hop on a board and hang ten, there’s no better spot than San Diego.

Alternatively, if you want to spend the day hiking , check out Torrey Pines State Park . Here, you’ll find lots of winding trails that offer sweeping views of the surrounding ocean and coastal bluffs. Afterward, head downtown to grab a much-needed bite to eat. You’ll find lots of different cuisines and can explore the various districts, such as the Gaslamp district, where you can go on a food tour !

Bryce Canyon, Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is a highly underrated national park compared to its neighbors, Zion and Arches, but surely no less incredible!  Visiting Bryce Canyon in the winter provides a winter wonderland amongst the vibrant red hoodoos . Dusted with snow, it’s like entering a magical kingdom- but from Mars!  

Aside from its sheer unique beauty, visiting Bryce Canyon in the winter is ideal because this is the park’s low season . Fewer crowds mean more space to explore hidden gems. 

Bundle up for temperatures ranging from 38 degrees Fahrenheit to low temperatures dropping to roughly 10 degrees Fahrenheit . The park has seen years with lower temperatures.  Always check with the park’s office prior to beginning your hike in the winter to verify safety and potential route closures.  

Popular amongst winter travelers at the park are snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.  You can complete one of the most well-known hikes on your own, like the Navajo Loop Trail (moderate) or the Mossy Cave Trail (easy). 

Don’t forget to complete the 8-mile scenic drive through the park – some of the best views are found here!

I highly recommend staying at Bryce Country Cabins from personal experience! This cozy budget option was just what I needed after a long day of hiking. You’ll also find plenty of great vacation rentals around the park.

Hermosa Beach, California

Hermosa Beach is a quaint beach town in California that has everything you need for an amazing winter getaway on the West Coast. The people are friendly and there’s great dining, shopping, or activities like beach volleyball! Located in the South Bay of Los Angeles, it’s easy to get to and surrounded by many of the best activities in southern California.

The winters are cool and mild with an average daytime temperature typically in the 60s°F. The winter high is about 68°F while the low is 48°F. There is a chance of rain, but the winters can often still be quite sunny and nice out most of the time.

Hermosa Beach gets into the holiday spirit with a giant Christmas tree on the pier as well as a few holiday events throughout the season including a local favorite known as “ Hermosa for the Holidays .” This three-day event happens towards the end of November and features a street festival with art, music, shopping, dining, carnival rides, and the annual tree lighting ceremony.

The city is great for both families looking to spend relaxing time at the beach and explore the outdoors , as well as those who enjoy a plentiful nightlife . The pier is lined with bars with ocean views and places to dance the night away! Or, you can simply enjoy walking, biking, or roller-skating along the beach path known as “the Strand.” 

Hermosa is also one of the few South Bay cities that has oceanfront hotels. Stay at The Beach House Hotel or Sea Sprite Oceanfront Hotel to be steps away from both the relaxing beach and activity on the pier. 

Whether you’re looking for a place to party or just want to enjoy some sun and an escape from the snow, Hermosa Beach has plenty to do and is one of the best winter beaches in California.

Page, Arizona

A great place to visit in the Western part of the United States in the winter is Page, Arizona. Page is home to many great attractions to visit in Arizona in the winter , like Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon , both of which offer stunning views and unique experiences.

The weather in Page is typically chilly but sunny during the winter months , making it a perfect destination for outdoor adventurers. Temperatures can get below freezing overnight.

The Horseshoe Bend Overlook is a must-see attraction while in Page, Arizona. The overlook is located just a few miles from the city and provides stunning views of the Colorado River winding through the red rocks of Glen Canyon.

Visitors can hike to the overlook or take a guided tour that will take them through Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend . The hike is about 1.5 miles round trip and is considered easy, making it perfect for families and those with limited hiking experience.

Antelope Canyon is a breathtaking slot canyon located just outside of Page, Arizona. The canyon is named for the herds of pronghorn antelope that used to graze in the area. Antelope Canyon is divided into two sections, Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon. Upper Antelope Canyon is the more popular of the two and can be accessed by guided tour only . Lower Antelope Canyon requires a tour guide as well but is less crowded than Upper Antelope Canyon.

Both sections of Antelope Canyon are stunning and offer visitors unique opportunities to explore the slot canyon. The canyon walls are made up of Navajo sandstone and range in color from orange to deep red. Photographers will find many opportunities to capture amazing photos while in Antelope Canyon.

There are several options for lodging near Antelope Canyon. The closest town is Page, Arizona which offers a variety of hotel, motel, and vacation home options. One of the best places to stay is the Hampton Inn Page . The hotel is located just minutes from both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon and offers free breakfast and an indoor pool.

Death Valley National Park, California/Nevada

For this reason, winter is one of the best times to visit Death Valley National Park. In winter, average temperatures range from the mid-60s F to the low 70s F. At night, temperatures often drop below 30 F . Therefore, it pays to wear layers and pack a warmer jacket.

Moderate temperatures on sunny winter days favor hiking and exploring in the park . In summer, it is often impossible to get out of the car in Death Valley due to extremely high temperatures. In winter, you can actively enjoy the area’s remarkable geology and rock formations.

One of the best activities in Death Valley National Park in winter is hiking through the cracked Badwater Basin , a fantastic experience in winter. A visit to Zabriskie Point and Dante’s View should also be on your itinerary, as these are the best viewpoints in Death Valley.

Be sure to take the 9-mile Scenic Artist Drive with Artist’s Palette Stop, as it is breathtaking. If you have a 4WD, visit Racetrack Playa . Winter is also ideal for hiking. One of the best hiking trails in the park is the Ubehebe Crater Loop and Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

Pack plenty of water and snacks and stay hydrated, even during winter travel. Pack warmer clothes because the temperature differences in the desert are significant. Fill up with gas before you arrive in Death Valley , as prices are much higher in the park, and gas service is limited.

One of the best hotels in the area is The Inn at Death Valley . This comfortable resort is an oasis in the desert offering an outdoor pool, a restaurant with vegetarian options, and a bar.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

When looking for a unique winter vacation on the West Coast, plan to visit Joshua Tree National Park . Located in not one, but two deserts, it’s a perfect place to escape the cold . With 800,000 acres in Southern California, this large park has room to roam in both the Mojave and the Colorado deserts , and each provides a different environment.

Named for the ubiquitous Joshua Tree, the park protects a surreal landscape that offers hiking, rock climbing, and birding . Don’t be surprised to see mockingbirds and roadrunners . Back road driving is one of the more popular things to do, as is star gazing . Joshua Tree is an International Dark Sky Park , which means it’s one of the best places in the world to see the stars.

Camping is also popular, but during the winter the temperatures can get below forty, so you’ll want to be prepared. The days are a balmy low- to mid-sixties , ideal weather for hiking.

The town of Twentynine Palms embraces the northern end of the park, and that’s where you can find restaurants, shopping, and a place to stay. For a true local feel, stay at the Joshua Tree Inn , built in 1949. Want something more upscale? Head south to Palm Springs and the Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel .

Catalina Island, California

Catalina Island is one of the best West Coast winter getaways to escape the cold and enjoy sunny weather. The weather in Catalina island during winter is mild subtropical and warm year-round.

You’ll find plenty of fun things to do on the island . For starters, you can rent a golf cart to roam around the island. Drive around the Avalon Pier and up to the mountains for a beautiful view of the Avalon waterfront. Make sure to stop by the Wrigley Memorial and take a stroll at their botanical garden and enjoy the views from the memorial. You can also undertake the strenuous Garden To Sky Summit hike.

If you’re up for some adventure, explore the island from above on a zip-lining tour or try your hand at parasailing , both are great adrenaline-fueled activities offering sweeping views of the island.

Since Catalina is an island, you can only get there by sea or air. The easiest is to ride a passenger ferry from Long Beach ‘s mainland port. You’ll also find ferries departing daily from San Pedro, Dana Point, and Newport Beach as well.

The island offers plenty of nice vacation rentals , well-located and offering all the amenities necessary for a pleasant stay. If you’d rather stay at a hotel, check out the historic Hotel Atwater giving you free access to Descanso Beach Club and within walking distance of beaches, restaurants, and shops.

With the end of the year comes a new world of travel possibilities. You can spend December fully embracing the chill of the season, or find a warm getaway if that’s more your style! Good thing the United States offers opportunities for travelers of all types, with appealing destinations scattered throughout the country. 

Starting from the West Coast and heading east, here’s a list of the top 29 destinations to visit this December:

1. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Winter is without a doubt the best time to see the deserts in California . Joshua Tree National Park is  one of the best places to visit in the colder months . The park’s temperatures range on average by December from near 40 degrees Fahrenheit overnight to near 60 by afternoon, which makes daytime hiking and rock climbing infinitely more enjoyable than the unbearable summertime heat.

2. Death Valley National Park, California & Nevada

If you’ve been dying to check out Death Valley (see what I did there?) but are a little nervous about its famously scorching temperatures, consider going in December! All throughout the winter months, the area sees a dip in its usually high temps, making it much more enjoyable for hikers.

Death Valley National Park is home to some seriously out-of-this-world landscapes that you definitely don’t want to miss out on. From the colorful Artist’s Palette to the stunning  Golden Canyon , there’s plenty  to see and do in Death Valley . Even though December is one of the best times to visit this incredible national park, it’s not typically crowded, so you can enjoy some of the best spots without worrying about overwhelming crowds cramping your style.

3. Mendocino County, California

While Mendocino County is famous for having weather reminiscent of eternal spring, December sees chilly temperatures that are cold enough to bundle up for, but warm enough to be able to get outside and enjoy the area’s moody coastline.

Mendocino County is the perfect December getaway for nature lovers and anyone who loves the cozy vibe of the beginning of winter. Fort Bragg is home to the legendary Glass Beach, which gets its name from the layer of colorful sea glass that washes up on its shore. In  Mendocino , you can check out Jug Handle State Natural Reserve, Van Damme State Park, Mendocino Headlands State Park, and other stunning natural areas. 4. Truckee, California

Truckee in the winter is a snowy wonderland and absolutely beautiful when the snow settles. You’ll want to check out the lake views at Donner Memorial State Park, hike the Truckee River Regional Park Legacy Trail, and dive in the Emerald Pools swimming hole — it’ll be cold, but so very refreshing. Lake Tahoe and Reno are only day trips away, and Donner Pass is a historic experience to drive through. There’s also fun to be had with snowboarding, skiing, and ice skating!

5. Sun Valley, Idaho

Idaho  is one the country’s best-kept secrets, and December is especially a great time to visit the state. Sun Valley gives you the opportunity to see some of the most picturesque winter landscapes  in the United States. Throughout December, the nearby Sawtooth Mountains get  that  much more magical when a new layer of snow decorates the scenery. With fantastic skiing opportunities,  naturally occurring hot springs , and hospitable locals, Sun Valley is one of the most ideal trips for a cozy December getaway.

6. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

As the least populated state, Wyoming may be the ideal destination to get some peace and quiet.  Yellowstone National Park is beautiful  no matter what time of year, but especially so during the winter. There’s a reason why  the park is one of BMTM’s bucket list–worthy road trip stops !

7. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Head 30 miles south of Yellowstone and you’ll find  Grand Teton National Park , which can be enjoyed just as much in December. Most of it is only reachable by cross-country ski or snowshoe during this time of the year, but the isolation is more than worth it.

8. San Juan County, Utah

Many people thinking of December trips may not consider  Utah . Lucky for you (and your wallet!),  there’s so much to explore in the state’s off season . The temperatures in the area dip to highs only in the 40s Fahrenheit and lows in the 20s in December, making the weather chilly but bearable. If you want a trip  full of exploration , San Juan County’s Valley of the Gods is BLM land, meaning you can camp in any of the road pulloffs (provided you leave no trace). If you decide to hike in any of Utah’s national parks, be sure you’re prepared for potentially icy conditions.

9. Moab, Utah

Moab sits between two of  Utah’s best national parks :  Arches  and Canyonlands, so this charming town surrounded by red-rock landscapes is a great pick for December adventurers. Not only can you hit up popular places like Delicate Arch and Mesa Arch without seeing too many crowds, but the chilly weather here isn’t too frigid to put a damper on your trip.

Moab doesn’t get very much snow, but the surrounding La Sal Mountains will likely be completely white this time of year. The color contrast between the white mountains and red-orange rock formations is a stunning sight that you only get in the wintertime.

10. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

If you want a December full of towering mountains, Colorado is the place to go. For one, the state is known for having the most “fourteeners” (mountains higher than 14,000 feet) in the country. 

While some parks close during this time of the year,  Rocky Mountain National Park  is open year-round. Though you can enjoy your trip here with just snowshoeing gear, there are opportunities for sledding and skiing too. The colder months are also ideal for watching wildlife like elk, moose, and deer. 11. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona , is one of the  United States’ hubs for everything spiritual , but it’s also a fantastic place to enjoy the outdoors in December. If you’re coming from a place that gets super cold in the winter, Sedona is a great escape to warmer temperatures without it being too hot.

Another huge plus of visiting Sedona in December is the laid-back atmosphere and thinner crowds. Head out for a hike to the Seven Sacred Pools or Devil’s Bridge, and you might be able to enjoy some solitude, as there won’t be as many hikers as there are in the warmer months.

12. Bisti Badlands Wilderness, New Mexico

Want to see some otherworldly landscapes with names like “Alien’s Throne” and “Dragon Eggs”? Head out to the Bisti Badlands Wilderness in New Mexico for all that and more. This incredible slice of undisturbed nature is a  must-see place in New Mexico  because of its uniqueness. The Bisti Badlands are a whopping 45,000 acres, with no real trails or paths to follow, making it ideal for travelers seeking a truly rugged adventure.

You can visit the Bisti Badlands any time of year and find very few people, but December is especially ideal because of the mild weather and even fewer people. Make sure to bring a 4×4 vehicle and plenty of water!

13. Taos, New Mexico

After the heat of the New Mexican climate fades away, December brings a time of rich cultural activities to the state. Taos combines both the natural and traditional draws of New Mexico, as a historic town located a half-hour drive from mountains ideal for skiing. If you come around Christmas, you’ll be able to see  luminarias  light the streets and parks of the state.

Taos is also a hub for forward-thinking architecture and has an entire community of people with Earthships, a sustainable type of home with all kinds of neat, environmentally friendly features.  Read more about the Taos Earthships here .

14. Albuquerque, New Mexico

If you like history, Albuquerque might be the best next vacation for you. Definitely take a walk through Old Town, check out the Albuquerque Museum, stay at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm , go to the Petroglyph National Monument, and watch a film at the historic KiMo Theatre.

But there’s plenty more to do if you’re not that into history, like snowshoe the Cibola National Forest , hike the Sandia Mountains, and get a view from above on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway.

15. Big Bend National Park, Texas

Big Bend National Park  is a desert area along the southwest Texan border with Mexico. This park is arguably the best place on this list to stargaze — it  has the least light pollution of any other national park unit in the lower 48 states ! 

The average temperatures in Big Bend range from a nighttime low of 39 degrees to a daytime high of 63 degrees Fahrenheit, though sudden periods of cold weather happen on occasion. According to the park’s website,  the holidays are typically busy , so reservations for accommodations are highly recommended.

16. Fredericksburg, Texas

For a holiday experience with a  German  touch, check out Fredericksburg, home to the largest number of Texas German speakers. If you come in the latter part of December, you’ll be able to  see the town decked out in full Christmas decorations — German Christmas pyramid included!

The town is also around 70 miles from other cities, such as San Antonio and Austin, making for a great roadtrip stop.

17. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans has  so  much to offer beyond the Mardi Gras season. Besides being a great city for solo female travelers , it is just as full of energy in December as in February during Mardi Gras. 18. Florida Keys Road Trip

If you’re craving a sense of freedom, the Florida Keys are the answer. You can drive the entire Overseas Highway and gaze out at the Atlantic Ocean the whole time, hopping from key to key. There’s plenty of things to do in Key Largo , Islamorada , Marathon , Big Pine , and Key West , like sunset sails , snorkeling , and heading to the beaches . 19. St. Augustine, Florida

If you want a December trading snowboards for surfboards, few places fit the bill as perfectly as Florida. During the holiday season, St. Augustine is most known for its  Nights of Lights , a free celebration during which the city is covered in lights! 

In general, you can enjoy Florida’s summer activities during the winter. Whether you want to  learn how to sail in Ft. Myers or  explore Cocoa Beach , the state has a ton to offer throughout the end of the year.

20. Savannah, Georgia

For a quaint Southern getaway,  Savannah  is an ideal destination. Shops selling holiday trinkets fill the hallmark  River Street  in December, offering the festive experience without the intense cold.

As a bonus, head about an hour and a half south to Georgia’s Jekyll Island for its annual  Holly Jolly Jekyll  festival. Throughout December, the island offers activities, ranging from a skating village to an array of light displays.

21. Charleston, South Carolina

Similar to the charm and historic landscape of Savannah,  Charleston  is a relaxing option for travelers this month. The city has a mild climate, giving visitors a slight chill of winter without the dramatic snowfall. Throughout December, the city hosts a celebration called the Holiday Festival of Lights , complete with lights, sculptures, and Santa!

22. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville’s location lets you experience the best of the Appalachian’s winter scenery while keeping the conveniences of the city. Depending on the weather, some parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains may be closed.

But there are more things to do here than just day hike.  Here are a few of the best free and budget-friendly things to do in Asheville . If you’re willing to spend some money, the Biltmore Estate hosts an annual  Christmas at Biltmore  celebration that’s made the city popular during the holiday season.

23. Nashville, Tennessee

Even though much of December is  Nashville ‘s low season, the city doesn’t lose any of its charm. Popular pastimes throughout the month include seeing the Christmas decorations at the  Gaylord Opryland Hotel  and attending the  annual Christmas Parade . If you come at the end of the month, you can catch Music City’s  New Year’s Eve extravaganza .

This is also a fantastic  budget destination in the US , as there are dozens of  free things to do in Nashville .

24. Hocking Hills, Ohio

Hocking Hills is an area in southeastern Ohio with some of the most dramatic topographic features in the Midwest. There are a ton of scenic preserves and parks in the area, the most famous being  Hocking Hills State Park . In December, you may see snow and ice formations along the trails, adding to the beauty of the parks’ hikes.

25. Chicago, Illinois

There’s no denying that winters in  Chicago  can get very cold. However, December doesn’t suffer the brunt of the winter freeze, which makes it an excellent destination if you want to take advantage of some off-season deals. You’ll be able to see some of the city’s main holiday attractions, including light displays at the  Lincoln Park Zoo and the traditional  Christkindlmarket .

Chicago also has tons of  free things to do , so between that and the off-season deals, December is the  perfect time to visit Chicago  on a budget. 

26. New York, New York

If Hollywood has showed us anything, it’s that  New York City  is the quintessential place to spend the holiday season. And how can it not be iconic? From ice skating in the parks to holiday shopping down Fifth Avenue, NYC is a playground of festive activity.

If you’re intimidated by its reputation for being super expensive, consider all of these  free things to do in the Big Apple , which can help offset some of the higher prices on things like food and accommodation.

27. Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park , a piece of northeastern coastal land mostly on Maine’s Mount Desert Island, shines in December. Some of its roads close this month, so be aware of the park’s  operating hours and seasons . Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are a few of the popular activities this time of year, along with  ice fishing  (though that is mainly popular during the latter part of winter).

28. maui, hawai’i.

There isn’t really a bad time to visit Hawai’i , making it a popular destination for those with time off during the holiday season. Maui is a great spot to explore, especially solo (here are tips for how to experience Maui alone ), with journeys like the  Road to Hana  to keep you busy.

29. Vieques, Puerto Rico

Thanks to its location south of the Tropic of Cancer,  Puerto Rico  is in a year-round state of summer. As one of two territories in the Caribbean that US citizens can enter without a passport, Puerto Rico is a perfect option for December travelers wanting to brush up on their Spanish. Most people visiting Vieques Island come to see  Mosquito Bay , one of the five bioluminescent bays in the world. Come out here on a dark night to experience nature’s very own light show.

Regardless of where in the US you are, there is no one way to spend the month of December. With the holiday season in full swing, there’s bound to be a destination that’ll finish your year off in an unforgettable way.

Are you craving a winter holiday escape? While I admit I love staying at home with a cup of hot cocoa and Christmas music playing non-stop, there’s something really special about visiting a Christmas town or city for the holidays. If you’re based on the west coast, here are some of my picks for the best west coast Christmas destinations.

Looking to see some of the best Christmas decorations in the United States with the whole family? You’ll need to get you and your family to the Pacific Northwest and Southern California to experience a unique west coast Christmas town.

Leavenworth, Washington

If you’re searching for that postcard-perfect Christmas holiday spot, Leavenworth, Washington should definitely be on your list. Located about two-and-a-half hours away from Seattle, it’s a Bavarian-themed town that goes all out for Christmas.

You’ll truly feel like you’re inside a snow globe. They have a tree-lighting ceremony that happens every year! The whole town is lit up and you can find plenty of holiday activities like a Christmas bazaar and carol singers to keep you entertained. The city even has a Nutcracker museum that offers nutcracker scavenger hunts to kids.

And if you’re craving some winter snow activities , Leavenworth is a great home base for those as well. Head to Leavenworth Ski Hill for tubing and hot chocolate or enjoy some winter sledding in the area.

You can even take a quiet sleigh ride, dog sled trip, or snowshoe around Enchantment Park and Blackbird Island near downtown. If you’re craving a white Christmas with some kitschy holiday cheer, head to North Pole, Alaska. Located only 18 minutes outside of Fairbanks, Alaska, North Pole offers kids the chance to meet Santa at Santa Claus House where you can even get a letter from Santa mailed from the North Pole!

Kids will also love all the local winter activities like getting to pet actual reindeer and trying dog-sledding. Driving through the North Pole will put you in the Christmas spirit with plenty of lights to admire and even candy cane-striped signposts. Fairbanks also features a six-week-long “Christmas in Ice” event where you can see experts and amateurs create amazing sculptures.

I mean, if you’re going to celebrate Christmas on the West Coast, then it makes sense to visit a place like the North Pole in Alaska. During the Holiday Season, this is a town that is heavily sought out.

Monterey, California

While there are tons of Christmas & holiday events happening all over California, there are some pretty amazing Christmas towns in California . And Monterey is a great town to visit in December. You’ll get out of the heavy big-city traffic and find the perfect spot for a coastal Christmas.

Strap on your ice skates for outdoor skating by the bay at the Custom House Plaza rink by Fisherman’s Wharf. Then enjoy the weekend festivities on Fisherman’s Wharf where you can listen to live music and even meet Santa.

Enjoy some strolling, shopping, and eating in downtown Monterey, Cannery Row , and Pacific Grove while looking at all their fabulous light decorations.

Plan a visit to The Inn at Spanish Bay, nestled on the Monterey Peninsula. Their lobby features an elaborately designed gingerbread display that is entirely edible. The displays take 2.5 weeks to create and include over 75 pounds of powdered sugar, more than 200 egg whites, 20 pounds of flour, 18 pounds of marshmallows, and tons of love from seven dedicated bakers.

The Inn is also illuminated with holiday lights and a variety of Christmas trees. Plus, for several days leading up to Christmas, carolers regale visitors with the season’s favorite tunes.

Honolulu, Hawaii

If you’re dreaming of palm trees for your Christmas tree, a trip to Honolulu might be the perfect winter escape. The city hosts a month-long City of Lights Festival. The celebration begins on December 1st with the tree lighting ceremony at Honolulu Hale, followed by the Electric Light Parade.

Visitors can visit Santa’s Gingerbread House and the Enchanted Forest Display, take photos with Santa, and even enjoy a holiday concert. For more sparkling lights, check out the Friday night fireworks at the Ilikai Hotel & Luxury Suites. If you’re Disney fans, you can even have a Christmas dinner at Disney Aulani .

Denver, Colorado

If you’re looking for a white Christmas and a spectacle of lights, Denver should be your destination choice. The city of Denver hosts a variety of activities like a classic German Christkindlmarket at Civic Center Park complete with cozy wooden huts, artisan gifts, and tasty treats like the traditional glühwein.

You can also see amazing light displays and entertainment around the city with the Denver Mile High Holidays celebration.

For more twinkling lights, visitors can head to the Denver Botanical Gardens to see their Blossoms of Light, a sound-reactive light display. If you plan in advance you can buy tickets for the popular Zoo Lights, which spreads across 60 acres with over a million bright lights, animated animal sculptures, Santa and Mrs. Claus visits, animal encounters, exciting entertainment, and treats for kids of all ages.

If you have a car, don’t miss the chance to drive through the nearby installation of Christmas in Color . It’s a mile-long drive-through of over a million lights perfectly synchronized to holiday music you’ll hear right through your radio.

Seattle, Washington

My hometown of Seattle, Washington is a great place to spend Christmas. You’ll get the crisp winter weather without all that white stuff getting in the way. And come on, it’s the evergreen state, you’ll be surrounded by Christmas trees! As I mentioned for Denver above, Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo creates a light display around the zoo called, WildLights.

Head over to Seattle Center to visit Santa at the top of the Space Needle . And enjoy all the great lights and entertainment annual Seattle Center Winterfest event.

Downtown, be sure to check out the teddy bear suite at the Fairmont Olympic, then pop into the Sheraton Grand Seattle to see their epic annual 28th Gingerbread Village which features some of the city’s top architecture firms, master builders, and culinary teams. And for entertainment, catch a show of the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Nutcracker or one of the Seattle Symphony’s holiday shows.

Cross over Lake Washington to the city of Bellevue to get your fill of shopping and watch snow fall at the nightly Snowflake Lane Christmas parade.

Las vegas, nevada.

With the numerous over-the-top hotels that are located in Las Vegas, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s a go-to Christmas town destination on the west coast. One of the best spots to head is the Bellagio resort. Inside you’ll see their conservatory transformed into a winter wonderland filled with beautiful holiday plants and flowers, as well as a towering Christmas tree.

Head outside to watch the daily water fountain show that features popular holiday tunes. Both of these events are free, leaving you extra money for presents!

The Park (formally the Monte Carlo) is another hotel that is offering holiday activities for visitors. Pop-up dining experiences in quaint cabins from Beerhaus, Bruxie, and more will offer a variety of bites and sips inspired by European holiday traditions, including German sausages, waffles on a stick, and mulled wine. Strolling carolers will sing the songs of the season and spread cheer throughout The Park, leading guests all the way to the towering 80-foot holiday tree on Toshiba Plaza.

If you’re dreaming of ice skating during your winter escape, head to the Cosmopolitan Hotel. They turn their Boulevard Pool into an ice rink, where you can spin and glide to the sounds of holiday tunes alongside the Vegas strip.

Solvang, California

If you’re searching for a Christmas town in the USA that will remind you of a European Christkindlmarkt, head to Solvang. This Danish-themed town is just north of Santa Barbara, California, and will give you the feel of a Scandinavian Christmas.

Every December they hold a Julefest festival that is filled with holiday activities and events. Some of the highlights include a wine and beer stroll, candlelight caroling tours, and even a nisse (Danish gnomes) scavenger hunt adventure.

Phoenix, Arizona

With an average temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit in December, Phoenix is the perfect place to find a sunny and warm Christmas vacation. Phoenix also is a sprawling metro area that has a lot of sister cities all with their own holiday celebrations, making it easy to find plenty of festive things to do.

For a unique desert experience, visit the Desert Botanical Garden to experience their Las Noches de las Luminarias. Visitors can stroll through the gardens that are lit with over 8,000 hand-lit luminaria bags and twinkle lights while listening to a southwest desert soundtrack.

Glendale Glitters is a massive pop-up holiday market that showcases 1.6 million LED lights throughout sixteen blocks of Historic Downtown Glendale, making it the largest free holiday light display in Arizona.

Portland, Oregon

My final west coast Christmas town USA pick is Portland, Oregon. One of the prime highlights of the season is the Christmas Ships boat parade. The parades feature over 50 decorated and lit ships that parade through the waters during fifteen nights in the season. You’ll need to check out the schedule to determine the days and locations of the parades.

Portland has more lights to see beyond those on the water. Visit the “Largest Holiday Light Show West of the Mississippi” at the Winter Wonderland drive-through light show that features over 250 staged scenes.

Then head to The Grotto for their Christmas Festival of Lights, one of the largest Christmas choral festivals in the world. The festival features more than 170 indoor holiday concerts performed by many of the region’s finest schools, churches, and civic choirs.

Finland's northernmost region promises a deep layer of snow all winter, perfect for skiing or sledding down the longest toboggan run in Europe. Most flights to this region land in Rovaniemi, home to Santa Claus Village, where you can meet the man in red, step across the Arctic Circle or embark on a reindeer sleigh ride. Though you'll only see about four hours of daylight, this makes for prime conditions to view the dazzling aurora borealis from the comfort of one of the glass hotels in the region.

December is one of the most popular months to visit the Bahamas – and for good reason. By the time this month rolls around, the threat of hurricanes has passed, making it terrific time to enjoy the outdoors. Spend your days lounging on one of the Bahamas' many beaches, snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear water or taking a boat tour to a private island . What's more, if you're visiting around the holidays, you'll catch the travel-worthy Junkanoo festival , which celebrates Bahamian culture with parades and festivities on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Although Phuket, Thailand, offers a consistently warm climate year-round, its dry weather and calm water in December make this month a great time to visit. Plan on spending most of your time sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving and more at beautiful beaches like Nai Harn and Kata Noi. But remember, December falls within Phuket's peak tourist season, so you won't find many deals for flights and accommodations during this month. Avoid a holiday visit in late December for slightly better rates.

Located in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a backpacker's dream due to its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched preservation. The remote kingdom's focus on cultural and environmental sustainability means heritage sites like the cliff-clinging Paro Taktsang and the riverside Punakha Dzong are never overcrowded. But cooler winter temperatures (averages range from the 30s to the 60s, depending on elevation) mean you'll encounter even fewer tourists. While a trip to this intriguing destination won't be cheap, a low-season visit can drive down the price of lodging and tours.

Nestled in southern Chilean Patagonia, this national park offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hailed among hikers as one of the most scenic destinations in the world, the park is home to turquoise lakes and dense forests, plus massive Grey Glacier and the towering granite of Cuernos del Paine. December offers up to 17 hours of daylight, allowing plenty of time for extensive hikes. But even though December is part of Patagonia's peak summer season, temperatures drop dramatically after nightfall, so visitors will want to pack layers.

This Hawaiian paradise is the perfect place to escape winter's onset. Weary travelers can thaw on colorful beaches like Punalu'u Beach (which has beautiful black sand ) and Papakolea Beach (a unique green sand option), while more adventurous types can go for a hike in 'Akaka Falls State Park or catch a glimpse of the more than 4,000-foot-tall Kilauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You'll likely contend with other snowbirds in December, but you'll find that hotel prices on the Big Island are still consistently lower than those on neighboring isles.

If Old Man Winter has you dreaming of warming things up, consider a trip to the Spice Island. Grenada, a tiny island in the Caribbean known for its aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, boasts steady temps in the 80s. And since December sits just between the rainy season and high tourism season, it's the perfect time to catch some rays without the crowds (or cost) of the months to come. Spend your days lounging on Grand Anse Beach or sampling the island's rich flavors at local markets or the House of Chocolate.

It's not surprising that dozens of holiday movies are set in New York. Dazzling sights like the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, decked-out window displays at Macy's and horse-drawn carriages in Central Park conjure up holiday cheer throughout the city. And while this metropolis offers plenty to do throughout the year, festive shows, Christmas-themed pop-up experiences and even the nip in the air make December one of New York's most magical months. Just be prepared for a bit of sticker shock; the holiday season is also one of the most popular (and expensive) times of year to visit.

If you're willing to brave the cold, travel to Prague for a fun and festive winter vacation. The city turns into a winter wonderland in December, with snow-dusted buildings and Christmas markets selling everything from locally made jewelry to toys to Christmas ornaments. Those with little ones in tow should try to arrive in early December when the annual St. Nicholas Eve event takes place. During this traditional celebration, you'll see Czechia's version of St. Nick, along with his angel and devil guides, hand out candy and other treats as they walk around the city.

While the Northern Hemisphere transitions to winter in December, Rio de Janeiro enters its peak summer season. And although this is one of the wettest times of the year here, you'll still enjoy optimal warmth and mostly sunny conditions. As such, there will be plenty of opportunities to see must-visit sights like the Christ the Redeemer statue or Sugarloaf Mountain. If you're keen on experiencing Rio's lively party scene during your visit, be sure to time your trip around Réveillon. This popular New Year's Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach draws millions of people annually with its music, dancing and fireworks.

Cologne hosts a handful of Christmas markets, including the popular Advent village at Cologne Cathedral, which boasts 150 stalls. When you're not taking in the city's imposing architecture or getting into the jovial spirit with a glass of Kölsch beer (a Cologne original), pop into Museum Ludwig to view modern art or the Chocolate Museum for tasty samples. Combat the dreary weather – average highs are in the low 40s and rain is common – by soaking away the chill at a thermal spa such as Neptunbad or Claudius Therme.

It's easy to fall in love with this Canadian destination, especially when it's covered in fresh snow. You'll be enchanted by Old Québec's sights and sounds as it transforms into a Christmas village. Shop for gifts (or for yourself) in Quartier Petit-Champlain, home to one of the oldest shopping streets in North America. Plus, with its 17th- and 18th-century architecture, French-speaking Quebec City allows you to soak up European culture without dropping the cash for a flight across the pond. Just be sure to bundle up; temperatures can drop to the single digits in December.

Before we dive into exploring the best west coast road trips, there are a few tips to be aware of–especially if you’re visiting as an international tourist and haven’t explored the United States before!

If you’re renting a car, shop around.

Sometimes large international carriers offer the best prices, sometimes local outfits. Sometimes one company has an excellent base price, but terrible rental requirements.

A Los Angeles to Yosemite road trip makes an excellent choice for those who love the big city, but also appreciate some quality time outdoors. 

During your time in Los Angeles, I recommend getting an early start to hike the city’s famous Runyon Canyon trail in Hollywood. After your hike, make your way towards Melrose Avenue to grab brunch and maybe do a little vintage shopping. Spend your afternoon in Santa Monica enjoying the beach before heading into downtown LA for dinner and drinks in the Arts District. 

From Los Angeles, you’ll head north to Paso Robles, one of California’s favorite wine regions. The wineries here are fun and affordable, and most are family-owned. Paso Robles is known for being down to earth and friendly, so even if you don’t know a lot about wine, you’re guaranteed to feel welcome and have a good time. 

After enjoying the wineries of Paso Robles, it’s time to head to Yosemite. Once inside the park make your way towards the Tunnel View lookout. This lookout offers some of the best views in the park with Bridal Veil Falls, El Capitan, and Half Dome off in the distance.

From Tunnel View, you’ll make your way down into Yosemite Valley. From here you can ditch the car and begin exploring this beautiful park on foot or bicycle. You’ll find trails and waterfalls all around you, so take your time and see it all. 

Three to five days is perfect for this Los Angeles to Yosemite road trip. This will give you at least one full day in each destination with the option to add on more time where you like. 

You’ll have lots of time in the car, so consider bringing some California books like Wild along!

Los Angeles to Eastern Sierra

The first place you can explore is off of the 14 freeway, the Red Rock Canyon State Park. In the summer, this area does get very hot, but if you’re doing this trip in the fall, spring, or winter months, it’s a great place to stop and soak in the desert views.

From there, head to Lone Pine, a cute town where several Western movies were filmed. From here, explore the Alamaba Hills. You can spend the day driving up and down dirt roads, viewing the rock formations, and gazing upon the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You can also disperse camp here.

From Alabama Hills you get a stellar view of Mt. Whitney , standing at 14,505 feet, it’s the highest point in the lower 48 states. Mt. Whitney is not an easy hike, but it’s a must-do for any avid hiker or backpacker. Permits are required for both day hikes and backpacking trips, and it’s a 22-mile round trip hike from Whitney Portal out of Lone Pine, so make sure to train if you want this hike to be part of your west coast road trip itinerary. 

Lone Pine is the start of the Eastern Sierra. From here, as you drive further North, you’ll encounter Independence, Big Pine, Bishop, and then Mammoth. There are so many hiking trails just outside of each of these towns with views that will make you not believe you’re in California.

You can make this trip as short or as long as you’d like. If you’re new to the area, give yourself a week to do several hikes, soak in hot springs and take in different elements of what this area has to offer.

California Gold Country

Highway 49 links many historical gold rush towns through the foothills of the Sierra Mountains in California. Start your journey in the adventure-filled town of Angels Camp, then drive north through Placerville, Coloma, Auburn, Grass Valley, and ending in Nevada City.

Each of these gold rush towns is full of interesting museums, quaint stores, great dining options, and adventures like panning for gold or watch a real blacksmith at work.

Placerville, also known as Hangtown, has the oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi. Half the store is filled with gold mining equipment (like gold mining pans) and hard to find hardware, the other half is packed with housewares and fabulous gifts. There is something for everyone.

If looking for a shorter trip, start in Auburn, the easiest of the towns to get to from Sacramento, then head up to the sister cities Grass Valley and Nevada City. There are old gold mines to explore, the best chocolate candy store (Grass Valley), shopping until you drop, and then top it all off with an ice cream cone from one of many locations.

Highway 49 winds through beautiful pine trees and at times it passes along the South Fork American River making this a peaceful road trip with unlimited potential. Each of these gold rush towns along this highway has something unique and “oldest” that they can claim.

Driving this route directly would only take about 2.5 hours, but with so much to see and do, it could easily take you four to five days to complete this west coast USA road trip route. Much of the drive is through small towns along windy roads with a continuous supply of mining and gold rush history and activities for all ages.

San Diego to Palm Springs Loop

California’s Lost Coast

California’s Lost Coast  is the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States. For 75 miles, the famed Pacific Coast Highway cuts inland, unable to pass through the rough terrain. This road trip from Eureka to Mendocino is perfect for those looking to explore off-the-beaten-path. 

Start your Lost Coast road trip in Eureka, California, an old town famous for its Victorian houses. Leave the Pacific Coast Highway behind as you head for the small town of Ferndale, where you can explore the Victorian homes and the Golden Gait Mercantile.

Mattole Road winds through rolling hills and backcountry before running parallel to the Pacific Ocean. Stop along Mattole Road to enjoy the solitude and coastal views. As Mattole Road turns back inland, you trade the rugged Lost Coast for a redwood forest.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is the largest old-growth redwood forest in the world. End your first day in Humboldt Redwoods State Park exploring the Avenue of the Giants, a famous 31-mile scenic drive through the redwoods. Stay the night in one of Humboldt Redwoods State Park’s many campgrounds or if you prefer a hotel, stay at The Tides Inn in Shelter Cove. 

The next morning, make your way to Shelter Cove. Explore Black Sands Beach and grab lunch and a beer at Gyppo. After lunch, stop to explore Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, searching for sea glass, and watching for seals and whales. End your Lost Cost journey in Mendocino where you can hike the coast on the Mendocino Headlands trail or go on a kayaking tour with Kayak Mendocino.

Recommended Trip Length

While this route could be driven in a day, 2-3 days gives you the perfect amount of time to explore the Lost Coast and the Mendocino area. 

National Parks in Southern California

Road trips are a wonderful way to experience California’s stunning natural wonders. And one of the very  best California road trips with a nature focus is a route that covers southern California’s great desert parks.

Start in Los Angeles and make your way to Palm Springs, a fun desert city with many resorts and spas to enjoy. Palm Springs is home to mid-century modern architecture and desert canyon hikes, as well as an aerial tramway that takes you to the top of Mount San Jacinto.

From Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park is just about an hour’s drive. The park is known for its magnificent boulder masses and the strange-looking, unique Joshua trees that aren’t really trees but a type of succulent. Whether you enjoy hiking or early settler history replete with relics of ranches and mines, you will have fun exploring Joshua Tree National Park.

Next, drive through the Mojave National Preserve, with more stands of Joshua trees and mighty sand dunes, before arriving at Death Valley National Park.

Death Valley National Park is home to the lowest point in North America. It is cool to take a photo by the sign saying “282 feet below sea level” at Badwater Basin! Explore the massive salt flats and take in the views from iconic viewpoints such as Zabriskie Point and Dante’s View. Death Valley National Park is huge but easily explored if you have a car.

From Death Valley National Park, make your way back to Los Angeles, stopping, if you like at more desert places along the way, such as Alabama Hills.

This trip is best enjoyed over a time frame of 5-7 days. Each of the parks is large and deserves a day or two to see the major sights and get in a couple of hikes.

Mammoth Lakes to Bridgeport

One of the most incredible places in California is the Eastern Sierras. It’s full of natural beauty and a great place for outdoor adventures. A road trip from  Mammoth Lakes to Bridgeport  will take you amazing hot springs with killer views, pristine lakes, scenic hiking trails, and more. 

You’ll begin your trip to Mammoth Lakes which is extremely busy in the winter and summer. The famous Mammoth Mountain is an all-season resort that is popular for snow sports in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. Mammoth Lakes also has incredible hot springs and loads of hiking trails.

From Mammoth Lakes, you’ll head north where you can drive the June Lake Loop. The Loop is made up of four different lakes where you can go fishing, kayak, swim (in the summer), and more. There are also hiking trails that lead you to postcard-worthy vistas. 

Continue your drive north to Lee Vining where you’ll find Mono Lake. The lake is one of the oldest in North America and a true gem. The tufa towers are made of mineral deposits and give it an out-of-this-world look. The best time to visit is for sunrise or sunset but you can enjoy day-time activities such as kayaking and birdwatching.

Last, you’ll reach Bridgeport where you can soak in more hot springs and even visit a ghost town. Hiking and horseback riding are also popular. And if you love fishing check out their annual fishing events and go fly fishing in one of the creeks. 

This Mammoth Lakes to Bridgeport road trip can be done in a weekend but at least three days is recommended if you hope to enjoy a few hikes.

Portland to Seattle

Start your road trip in the delightfully weird city of Portland (Keep Portland Weird is actually the city’s slogan) and stock up on food, snacks, and gas. If you’ve never been to Portland, be sure to allow for a day in your itinerary to explore the city before hitting the road.  

From Portland, head north on the I-5 S and drive to the Mount Saint Helens Visitor Center (about an hour). Here you can learn more about the major eruption on March 27 in 1980. This eruption took the lives of 57 people and drastically changed the shape of Mount St. Helens and the surrounding ecosystem.   

Drive to Randle on the 12 and continue to Windy Ridge via the NF-99. Often cited as one of the most scenic drives in Washington State, be sure to take plenty of time to admire the views here. Note that the NF-99 closes around late October/early November (depending on the first serious snowfall). At the end of the road, you can hike up Windy Ridge for a beautiful view of Mount Saint Helens and Spirit Lake.  

Next up on your west coast road trip itinerary is Mount Rainier National Park. Drive here via the 123 and Steven’s Canyon Road (also closed in winter) and spend a day or two exploring this amazing National Park. Nice hiking trails are the Skyline Trail (8.4 miles round trip) and the short but beautiful Alta Vista trail (1.8 mile). Both start at the Paradise parking lot.   

End your trip in Seattle, the birthplace of Starbucks, home to famous Pike Place Market, and of course the 605-ft.-tall Space Needle.  

You could drive the 175 miles from Portland to Seattle in just under 3 hours via the I-5 S, however, for this road trip, I’d recommend 3 days if you don’t plan on exploring Portland or Seattle. If you want to visit these cities as well, add at least two extra days so you can spend an entire day in both of these great west coast cities.  

Willamette Valley

Just south of the popular Oregon city of Portland sits the gorgeous Willamette Valley, known for the state’s wine production. A west coast USA road trip between Portland and Eugene will take you right through one of the most beautiful places in Oregon with plenty of opportunities to stop for great wine, food, and scenery.

There are nearly 600 wineries in the Willamette Valley and many of them are open year-round for tastings and tours. The region is known for producing premier Pinot-Noir but you will also find many other varietals to taste. 

Another plus to this road trip is the cute towns along the way offering fabulous dining and charming accommodations. McMinnville is a favorite with its historic center, boutique shops, foodie-focused restaurants, and dozens of tasting rooms. 

Oregon’s pretty capital city of Salem is also worth a visit with its gardens, cultural, arts, and food scene. Pay a visit to the Willamette Valley Cheese Company, enjoy a brunch cruise on the Willamette Queen Riverboat, or partake in a glass of wine at Oregon’s oldest producing winery.

The Willamette Valley is also a top choice of nature lovers. With miles of farmland, orchards, and vineyards plus views of the Columbia River and the Cascade Mountains, the drive is nothing short of stunning. If you’re looking for outdoor adventure be sure to spend some time around Eugene which is surrounded by hiking and cycling trails, waterfalls, and rivers.

It only takes about 5 hours to drive this west coast USA road trip loop but with so many places to stop along the way we recommend at least 1 night and 2 full days.

Portland to Bend

Oregon is a great place for a road trip, and an easy route that includes everything from waterfalls to mountains to rainbow-hued hills is from Portland to Bend.

Once you’ve had your fill of weird in Portland, hit the road to the Columbia River Gorge. This river-carved canyon along the Oregon-Washington border is known for its great hiking trails and incredible waterfalls. Don’t miss Multnomah Falls, or hikes to spots like Latourell Falls, the Oneonta Gorge, and Elowah Falls.

From here, you can head south towards Bend on OR-35, which takes you past Mount Hood, Oregon’s most famous volcano. You could stop to hit the ski slopes or the mountain bike trails on Mt. Hood, or simply ride the Magic Mile Chair Lift up to 7000 feet for great views.

Continue your drive to an otherworldly spot in eastern Oregon: the Painted Hills at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument near Mitchell. Enjoy the scenic drive through the park, and take a short trail or two to get up close to these orange, yellow, and green hills.

You’ll have to retrace your route on your way back towards Bend, so you may as well also stop Smith Rock State Park. Famous for its rock climbing, this stunning park also has some good hikes for all skill levels. If you’re up for a challenge, try the Misery Ridge Trail.

From Smith Rock, it’s only about 40 miles to Bend, the outdoor recreation mecca of Oregon. Bend is a great jumping-off point when you decide to continue your Oregon road trip .

If you drive straight through, this route takes 8 hours. But of course, you don’t want to drive it straight through! I’d recommend at least 3-4 days for the driving portion of this trip, not counting the time you spend in Portland. 

Seattle to the San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands are an incredibly scenic chain of 170 islands about 3 hours north of Seattle that offer a ton of outdoor adventures. San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island are the 3 most popular ones to visit, and all of them are a perfect final stop on a road trip from Seattle.

Starting from Seattle, take I-5 north toward the Skagit Valley. Pronounced “skaaa-jit”, this area spans about 100 miles and is made up of a bunch of quaint towns and farms worth visiting on your road trip.

Start your trip off with a beer tasting flight in Mt. Vernon. If you love shopping, Mt. Vernon has some great antique shops and boutiques worth poking your head into. 

Next head to the nearby Chuckanut Drive. This is one of my favorite things to do in Skagit County, WA . It’s a 20-mile scenic drive that takes you along the coast through dense trees that open up to offer incredible views of the San Juan Islands. Hikers will love the Oyster Dome trail for incredible, uninterrupted views of your final destination. Those looking for more low-key hikes should head to Larrabee State Park.

Before heading to the San Juan Islands, make a stop at Deception Pass State Park. There are a bunch of easy walking trails overlooking some of the bluest water in Washington. It makes for a beautiful photo when you get the mint-colored Deception Pass Bridge in the shot.

Lastly, make your way to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal about an hour before your reserved your ferry ticket (reservations are a must in the summer).

If you chose the quieter and least-visited Lopez Island as your final destination, you can expect the ride to be about an hour on a direct ferry. Orcas Island, the largest and most food-focused of the islands, will take about an hour and 20 minutes. San Juan Island, the most popular and known for art and wildlife, will take about 1.5 hours.

No matter which island you chose, make sure you plan a whale watching tour because this is one of the best places in the world to see orcas and other types of whales.

Five days would make for a solid US west coast road trip, spending about 2 days in the Skagit Valley and 3 days on whichever island you choose.

Northeast Oregon

Northeast Oregon is an underrated USA west coast road trip destination that will take you to some of the most remote and awe-inspiring wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest. It is an off-the-beaten-path corner of the state that is home to character-filled Western towns, lonely scenic byways, soaring granite peaks, and the deepest canyon in North America. 

The road trip begins and ends in Baker City—a historic town that was once the largest settlement between Portland and Salt Lake. The picturesque town has over 100 historic houses, a phenomenal Oregon Trail interpretive center, and its very own Carnegie Library. 

From Baker City, the road follows the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway to the artsy town of Joseph, on the shores of Lake Wallowa State Park. 

Lake Wallowa is one of the premier recreation areas in Eastern Oregon. The shimmering cobalt lake is a paradise for boaters, swimmers, and fishing enthusiasts. It is also a primary gateway to the towering granite peaks of the Eagle Cap Wilderness. 

If you have a few days to spare on your road trip, hiking the Wallowas is an unforgettable Pacific Northwest experience. The sprawling area boasts alpine lakes, wildflower-laced meadows, and 18 peaks that eclipse 9,000 feet.  

From the Wallowa Mountains near Joseph, the road trip traverses barn-dotted farmlands and winds through a rugged river canyon to the minuscule community of Imnaha. The tiny town is the starting point of an epic adventure along a narrow and treacherous gravel road, to the Hat Point Overlook.

At Hat Point, a fire tower showcases stunning views of canyon walls that rise nearly 8,000 feet above the waters of the Snake River.

After taking some time to soak in the views of  Hells Canyon  from Hat Point, the scenic loop continues toward Baker City. Along the way, it traverses the eastern flank of the Wallowas and winds through golden hills of cow-speckled farmlands. 

A northeast Oregon road trip should ideally take at least 3-4 days. However, If you enjoy camping and hiking, consider adding a few extra days to enjoy the vast Eagle Cap Wilderness in Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains. 

Oregon Coast

Because of its simple route and beautiful coastal scenery, the Oregon Coast is the most popular west coast road trip in the state.

If you start at the north end, closer to Portland, you will pass the iconic bridges of Astoria, and also a major artistic hub for film and movies.

Once you reach the city of Seaside, where Lewis and Clark (and Sacagewea and York!) famously completed their expedition to the Pacific Ocean. While you stop to relax on the beachfront, be sure to head to Cannon Beach for a look at Haystack Rock.

Driving south, stop in the city of Tillamook  to visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory for a taste of their globally recognized cheese and farm-fresh ice cream.

Stay overnight in Yachats, a town that prides itself on sourcing local and sustainable products, as well as amazing attractions such as Oregon’s Sea Lion Caves and Cape Perpetua.

Next, wake up and drive to Florence, the sand dune capital of Oregon, and rent ATVs for the day. Or, continue south and spend your time exploring the dramatic views of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. However long you decide to drive the coast, the best lodging options to fully experience the location would be to rent a cabin on the beach.

About 338 miles.

It is not a far distance in total,  so 3-4 days is recommended to explore the Oregon Coast at a more relaxed pace. However, if you are an avid photographer or love to immerse yourself in nature by hiking and camping, spending a week in the area might be more fulfilling. 

Beaches of Olympic National Park

One of the best US west coast road trips to take in the PNW is to the Olympic National Park Beaches. The Olympic Peninsula beaches are so different than any beaches you have ever seen before! These beaches are filled with sea stacks, tide pools, wildlife, and driftwood. If you are lucky, you will spot a bald eagle while having a nice walk down the beach. 

The first stop should be the Kalaloch Beach. There are many campgrounds here if you want to stay a night. After that, make sure to stop by Ruby Beach, which has an enormous sea stack. It is a perfect place for sunset with the family, and you don’t need to hike too far to get great views.

Next, try out a great hike at Second Beach (4-mile round trip). Many people love backpacking and staying the night at this beautiful spot. The trailhead is located close to River’s Edge Restaurant, which had yummy food and large windows to watch the bald eagles hunt outside. 

The next beach on the list is  Rialto Beach . This beach has a popular hike called The Hole In The Wall hike, and it is around 4 miles round trip. The best time to experience this hike is during low tide. 

The last spot on this trip is a special place called Cape Flattery. This is the northwesternmost point of the contiguous United States and is also part of the Makah Reservation. 

This is a great weekend destination. The first day you should experience Kalaloch, Ruby, and Second Beach, then Stay in Forks. The next day, drive to Rialto Beach and Cape Flattery.

Portland to Cannon Beach

The picturesque Cannon Beach is one of the shortest and most popular road trips from Portland.

The most distinct feature of the area is the iconic Haystack Rock, a 235-feet rock formation jutting out of the Pacific Ocean. Not far from it, visitors can explore the scenic Ecola State Park with stunning nature and hikes that can be entered from the north end of Cannon Beach.

Cannon Beach stretches for nine miles and provides plenty of space for walking, running, and strolling. Some of the top activities are wildlife watching, hiking, and relaxing. If you look closely, you might spot colonies of puffins on Haystack Rock and spot large mammals such as elk and deer more in the area more inland.

And while the town has become a tourist magnet for travelers taking a west coast USA road trip, it has retained a small-town charm thanks to stringent regulations that limit the number of big-name chains such as stores and restaurants allowing small businesses to dominate the downtown.

You can easily road trip to Cannon Beach from Portland on a day trip, but to enjoy a quieter side to this beautiful spot, consider spending the night.

Anchorage to Kenai Fjords National Park

When visiting Anchorage, Alaska, one thing you absolutely must do is rent a car and drive down to the Kenai Peninsula. Just 2.5 – 3 hours away from Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula is a natural wonderland where the ice age mixes with the present day. Lush, dense forests, teal glacial water, massive glaciers, and abundant wildlife make this destination one that truly can’t be missed. 

Driving from Anchorage, within minutes you’ll find yourself tracing the side of Chugach State Park and Turnagain Arm, a massive waterway famous for bore tides that happen on a near-daily basis. Pullover at Beluga Point for a great viewing point of Turnagain Arm and, you guessed it, belugas! 

Back on the road, continue until you hit Girdwood, a resort town that’s bustling with things to do for adventure-lovers. You can stay here for the night, or simply make a pit stop for a bite to eat. Jack Sprat Restaurant is a popular choice, or for something more upscale with unbeatable views, go to Seven Glaciers Restaurant (which you can access by tram!). 

From Girdwood, it’s just another hour and 45 minutes to Seward, the entry point for Kenai Fjords National Park. Once you’re here, you can explore the national park on foot, by kayak, or by boat tour. On Resurrection Bay, you might spot whales, sea lions, otters, kittiwakes, and more! Be sure to also check out Exit Glacier, which is the only glacier you can pretty much drive right up to, park, and enjoy without hiking. 

While a trip to Kenai Fjords National Park and a quick boat tour of Resurrection Bay can easily be done in one day with minimal stops, we recommend dedicating at least 2 days to exploring the park and the surrounding areas in south-central Alaska .

Anchorage, Seward + Denali Loop

What’s better than an Alaskan cruise? An Alaskan road trip!

On a road trip in Alaska, you’ll see breathtaking views of mountains, wildlife, and ocean critters along with thrilling active pursuits along the way. 

Starting in Anchorage, take one of the most scenic roads in America, Seward Highway to visit Kenai Fjords National Park. Once in Seward, you can hike a glacier, take a whale-watching cruise, go iceberg kayaking, fishing, or one of sample some of these exciting things to do in Seward .

The next stop is Girdwood, Alaska’s ski resort town. Stay in the luxurious Alyeska Resort where you’ll have access to multiple hiking trails and the Alyeska Aerial Tram for breathtaking views of the Turnagain Arm and Chugach Mountain Range.

Talkeetna, Alaska, 3 hours north, is a quirky, fun town that some say was the inspiration for the TV show Northern Exposure. Around May 1st, Talkeetna is overflowing with climbers preparing for a Denali summit. Not planning to climb a 20,320-foot mountain? You can still have the experience of a lifetime with a flightseeing tour complete with a glacier landing.

If you have an extra few days to spare, the entrance to Denali National Park is 2 hours north. The 6 million-acre national park is one of the best places in the world to spend time up close with wildlife but it’s too large for a day trip to be worth it. Plan accordingly and head back to Anchorage to complete the trip.

The 12 Best Places to Travel in December

When thinking about the best places to travel in December, you may be tempted to view the month through the lens of Christmas—which is understandable, given the wealth of cities that go all out for the holidays . And while we’re always down for a European Christmas market or dazzling lights display, there are plenty of reasons to travel this month outside of the holly and the jolly.

Whether you want to get a jumpstart on ski season or escape the winter doldrums in the Caribbean, here are the 12 best places to travel in December.

Miami, Florida

Many people head to Miami in early December for Art Basel Miami Beach , a glittering, four-day confab (scheduled for December 8–10 in 2023) that lures both the fashion and art worlds. The lineup of artists includes 24 first-time participants (out of 277 total) hailing everywhere from New York to Seoul, plus several guest lectures and dining experiences.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Miami beyond the final moments of Art Basel, of course—namely a booming high-end hotel scene. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an art destination in and of itself, with geometric metal walls and massive sculptures hanging from the lobby ceiling. Other luxurious amenities, like private butlers and a gourmet burger bar, make this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. For a beachier (but just as luxurious) stay, head to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne , located about 15 miles from South Beach. Its ocean views and tequila-stocked restaurant are great any time of year, but this December welcomes a slew of holiday-themed perks, like eggnog in the lobby and peppermint pedicures in the spa.

Yellowstone National Park

If you haven’t visited Yellowstone in the dead of winter, you are missing out on one of the most incredible travel experiences out there. Not only will you escape the typical summer hoards that make it nearly impossible to see wildlife and popular sites like Old Faithful—starting in December, the park is closed to cars and will only allow snowcoaches and snowmobiles to enter—but the relative quiet and icy chills of winter make our oldest national park feel even more like a mystical wonderland. Just imagine: sleepy bison with snow-dusted beards, bright blue pools set against a blanket of white, and boardwalks billowing with steam from the surrounding thermal features.

There are only a couple of in-park lodges open in the winter, but luckily they are incredibly cozy and convenient. Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Snow Lodge will get an extra dose of holiday magic this December, with trees set up throughout the hotel, in-room Christmas sweets, cookie decorating stations, and visits from Santa. Guests can also book several outdoor excursions from the lodge, ranging from guided snowshoe tours to wildlife photo safaris.

The Azores, Portugal

This once-overlooked archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is tailor-made for adventurers—think whale watching, hiking calderas, and rappelling down waterfalls. (The island of Terceira is home to the only volcano in the world where visitors can explore a chimney and secondary magma chamber, sitting side by side.) And while tourism has caught up to the Azores within the past decade, visiting during the winter gives you a glimpse of what Eden once looked like.

If you’re craving water time, pay a visit to a geothermally heated hot spring instead.

Salzburg, Austria

Germany tends to get most of the attention when it comes to Christmas markets (for good reason), but neighboring Austria can be just as festive and charming—especially in the city of Salzburg. It’s not a surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage -listed Old City, which served as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, also fills its famed Christkindlmarkt with song.

With roots dating back to the 15th century, the market’s sing-alongs and traditional wind music are as much a part of the festivities as the mulled wine and stands selling ornaments and fluffy socks. We’re not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either. The market earns extra points for being just steps away from Hotel Goldener Hirsch , one of the world’s oldest luxury hotels and a perfect spot to warm up between outdoor shopping sprees.

Just down the Caribbean coast from the Yucatán with a fraction of the tourism, Belize has transformed from a backpacker haven into a luxury destination over the past few years. (Bonus: It’s only a five-hour flight from New York.) Along with world-class reefs for diving and Mayan ruins for exploring, the country is known for its conservation efforts, particularly when it comes to protecting ocean life. Many hotels and resorts have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, including Turneffe Island Resort , which goes to great lengths to support the population of Antillean Manatees in the nearby Turneffe Atoll. Switzerland

It can be hard to pick just one Swiss destination to visit in December, which is why hopping on the Glacier Express is the perfect introduction to this wintery wonderland.

The Glacier Express is an eight-hour train ride that connects two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts—Zermatt and St. Moritz—but it’s really more about the journey than the destination here. Charleston, South Carolina

If you want an immersive Christmas experience but aren’t a fan of cold weather, Charleston is the perfect destination for you. Both the Big Red Express lift and Creekside Gondola were reworked a couple of years ago to hold more people, meaning the mountains will feel far less congested and visitors can enjoy even more rounds of powder.

Once you pack up your poles for the day, soak up all the après glory at Whistler Village. Here you’ll find the resort area’s largest concentration of bars and restaurants, ranging from the buzzy high-end seafood restaurant Wild Blue to the upscale yet relaxed Braidwood Tavern . In terms of hotels, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler looks (and feels) like a true fairy tale castle, nestled at the base of Blackcomb.

Santiago, Chile

​​Travelers often overlook Chile’s capital city in favor of splashier South American destinations like Rio or Buenos Aires—but we encourage you not to make that same mistake. Santiago is not only a superb base for outdoor adventure, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, but it’s an excellent standalone destination for anyone who loves great food, great wine, and plenty of shopping opportunities.

After exploring the city’s coolest neighborhoods, tack on a side trip to Valparaíso—the former seaport home of Pablo Neruda and current headquarters for the Chilean Navy. It’s just a two-hour drive here from Santiago, but you’ll want to plan to stay overnight (and not just because you’ll be drinking a lot of wine). With its colorful hillside houses and abundance of museum-worthy street art, Valparaíso is not an easy place to say goodbye to.

If you’re anything like us, emerging from two years of lockdowns and closed borders has inspired you to finally book that once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ve always dreamed about—like an expedition to Antarctica , for example. The white continent is at its best from December to March, when wildlife is active and the sun shines for nearly 24 hours a day. And while trips like these typically require a lot of advance planning, there’s still time to book a spot on an expedition cruise ship before 2023 wraps up (although you may want to use this time to start researching for next year).

Ponant has about a dozen sailings available through the end of December, with trips ranging from 10 to 15 nights and including stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Another great option is Quark Expedition’s “Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent” voyage, an 11-day trip with six departure dates within the month of December (plus many in 2024). Each sailing includes the typical stops, but Quark also started offering a majorly cool add-on a few years ago: alpine heli-trekking, in which guests board a helicopter (just imagine those views) and fly to typically inaccessible terrain to enjoy hiking or snowshoeing.

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 tropical isles, the British Virgin Islands are easily one of the best places to travel in December. The archipelago is the epitome of Caribbean relaxation with white-sand beaches and lush rainforests—not to mention some of the best hotels in the entire region. Richard Branson’s Necker Island is arguably the most famous resort, freshly reconstructed with an emphasis on sustainability. New wind turbines join the existing solar farm so that the resort runs on 90 percent renewable energy. Even the staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic.

December is great for: conversation, conservation, and consternation

The South Pole is a destination that’s heating up, in every sense. Though only accessible for three to four months per year, starting each November, it’s increasingly on travelers’ radars . More worrisomely, of course, the icy landscape here is under siege from climate change, with average midwinter temperatures climbing 10 degrees over the past 60 years.

This has already impacted species like the Adélie penguins, sea-ice dependent birds whose populations have plummeted. Consider, then, a boat trip here that’s focused on conservation, a chance to both learn from onboard experts how to protect this landscape and fund those efforts. December is great for: an immersive festive indulgence

Think of a trip to the Arctic Circle settlement of Rovaniemi as stepping into a real-life snow globe, and relish the avalanche of festive clichés that it offers—after all, it’s the official home of Santa Claus. There’s a supersized Christmas market here, overloaded with stalls selling souvenirs, and an Elf Academy where would-be helpers can take courses in how to keep Santa’s workshop humming year-round (and leave with an official degree certificate for their efforts).

Remember, too, that this is the ideal place to see the Northern Lights: that otherworldly phenomenon, caused by a combination of electricity, magnetic forces and space dust, is visible here for almost 200 nights per year, maximizing your chances of viewing an elusive spectacle.

Architecture is another reason to visit this settlement, since it was almost entirely rebuilt in the wake of World War II—thankfully, under the auspices of a world-class talent, Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. He was allowed to reimagine the master plan and waggishly mapped out a city that resembled a reindeer’s head from the sky—the roads are antlers and the sports stadium is its eye.

3. St. Louis, Missouri

December is great for: a retro trip to an all-American Christmas

The Gateway Arch of St. Louis, that soaring, sleek monument to American optimism dating back to the 1960s, is the centerpiece of this month’s Winterfest, which runs through the end of the month on Kiener Plaza. Expect a rink for skating, s’mores stations, and even rentable igloos where you can hole up if the weather proves too brutal.

Come here too for festive productions like Twas The Night Before, inspired by the Clement Clarke Moore poem but remixed by the Cirque du Soleil team into a multi-disciplinary show, and a Nutcracker ballet, plus a Polar Express train simulation at the city’s historic Union Station. Visitors can also catch the two-day Unleash the Beast tour, when 30 of the world’s best pro bull riders pit stop here on their annual circuit, the animal answer to F1.

The latest iteration of the art-obsessed boutique chainlet, founded by a pair of collectors 17 years ago in Louisville, opened in downtown St. Louis this summer, a 173-room conversion of a renovated former YMCA building that’s now festooned with edgy contemporary pieces throughout.

STL, the original home of now defunct carrier TWA, retains an impressive network of flights even today—hop there directly from Oklahoma City, Des Moines, and Phoenix, among others, this month. Southwest’s service is particularly plentiful.

4. Nassau, Bahamas

December is great for: a newly quick getaway to the Caribbean

The main island of this scattered archipelago has long been a quick getaway for the East Coast—just 45 minutes’ flight from South Florida, for example. This winter, easy access to it has been unlocked for the West Coast for the first time. Alaska has announced nonstop flights from both Los Angeles and Seattle, running up to four times weekly, while JetBlue will shadow it on the L.A. route, running an aircraft equipped with its better-than-business Mint class.

It’s well-timed: The country has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of its independence from the British all year, adding an extra frisson of energy to the year-round Junkanoo tradition that’s one of the country’s longest-running. We told you to visit for the summertime bash, but if you missed that window, come for the bigger, blowout bash in winter, centering on what the British (and Bahamians) call Boxing Day. The precise origins remain murky of this fusion fest, but go to the Educulture Junkanoo Museum to learn more. The most widely accepted theory involves a slave owner giving his enslaved people the day off and deeding a version of his name, John Canoe, to the festivities.

Baha Mar encompasses the Rosewood, SLS, and a Grand Hyatt. There are plenty of activities offered among the three of them, whether that be spending time in the casino or feeding turtles and nurse sharks in the sanctuary. Plus, the property offers more than 40 dining and nightlife options.

In addition to the new West Coast routes, there are nonstop flights to NAS from Charlotte, Dallas, Chicago, and Philadelphia, all on American Airlines.

5. Hokkaido, Japan

December is great for: powder-chasing in the northern reaches of Japan

Japan ’s prime powder region, Hokkaido, is one of the most reliable places to plan a ski trip worldwide. Come in December and the pistes are at their peak with some of the deepest champagne powder in the world, but don’t stick to the popular runs. Head to Iwanai on the coast, a village where a ski resort was built in the 1980s only to fall into disrepair in the financial turmoil of the 1990s; here you can take a cat-skiing adventure on the now-untouched slopes. (Since this is where ramen originates, make sure to try a bowl or two before you leave. Rakuichi Soba is one standout.)

Don’t forget, too, that you can celebrate Christmas in the uniquely Japanese way this month—with fried chicken, a legacy of an exceptionally successful marketing gimmick by KFC 50 years ago that embedded the idea in the national psyche. There’s also the White Illumination event in Sapporo Odori Park, a four-decade tradition that brings 800,000 or more twinkling lights to the city intended to evoke a Mittel European Christmas.

The ski-in, ski-out resort is a whimsical delight. Book one of the Insta-ready Cloud Suites, with cumulus-shaped decorative touches, from cushions to mirrors, and enjoy being handily located in central Hokkaido.

6. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

December is great for: an illuminating stroll around the canals

The 12th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival runs from December 1 through late January: It was the canny brainchild of Felix Guttmann, an entrepreneur who built his fortune with canal sightseeing boats, and is a sister event to the likes of Vivid Sydney in Australia.

Creatives from around the world are invited to submit designs, and 20 or so will be selected for temporary installation in the city center. A few will then earn the ultimate accolade: a permanent berth in Amsterdam, like the work by Massimo Uberti and Marco Pollice, “Today I Love You,” from the fourth edition, now on the facade of a local hospital, or “178 Bottles, 1 Message” from the third edition, a piece designed by Tijdmakers (Saskia Hoogendoorn and Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands) in the square in front of Amsterdam Sloterdijk.

There’s no sense yet which, if any, of this year’s entries will graduate to become a fixture of the cityscape, but expect them to be particularly outlandish. The theme for 2023 is “Loading . . . Revealing Art, AI, and Tech” so trippy AI-forms will likely be the default.

One of Europe’s true landmark hotels, the 1890s wedding cake–like building just emerged from a three-year renovation of all private and public areas. Don’t miss the chance to have a nightcap in Freddy’s, the clubby bar named after its former owner, a scion of the Heineken brewing dynasty.

There are countless direct flights from the USA to Amsterdam. If you can splurge on business, opt for KLM to collect one of its charming genever houses offered as keepsakes for all travelers up front, or try the newly installed JetBlue service from JFK for a more affordable alternative.

Visitors can try some of the local wines under a sparkly canopy of lights at the Christmas Terrace, a lounge area created as part of the program.

7. Montepulciano, Italy

December is great for: wine and Wenceslas

Montepulciano is world famous thanks to the namesake grape that forms the building block of many red table wines. Most visitors come to this little Tuscan enclave in summer to sample a bottle or two at vineyards like Bindella and Fattoria Svetoni, but it’s worth a trip in winter for a very different reason: the largest Christmas market in the central region of Italy. It runs on weekends in December, then every day from December 22 through Epiphany.

The festivities are based around Piazza Grande, with stalls and stands selling souvenirs and treats, and the local fortress is transformed into Santa’s Grotto (or Babbo Natale, as the Italians call him).

The 21-room, year-old boutique property sits in a reimagined 18th-century village amid some of Italy’s most storied vineyards. The hotel’s sommelier offers regular guided tastings of local wines.

There are bargain-priced flights on Emirates, which runs a fifth freedom flight, as well as Italy-based budget carrier Neos Air, on the route to Milan from JFK. From there, it’s a short hop to Perugia airport, an hour’s drive away.

8. Lake Tekapo & Lake Pukaki, New Zealand

December is great for: road-tripping through a carpet of blooms

From December 1, United Airlines will offer a groundbreaking new way to reach New Zealand, with direct, nonstop service from SFO to Christchurch. It’s the first time in almost 20 years that U.S. travelers can bypass transiting in the north island at Auckland, and instead arrive immediately in the wilds of the south island, the ideal base for a road trip round the rugged, CGI-like landscapes that are synonymous with the country.

It’s peak summer season this month, and the landscape of the interior hills will be carpeted in lupins, pink and purple spear-like flowers. Take a drive around the area to snap a few shots and to enjoy the adrenalin-powered hobbies that have mushroomed with lupin-like ferocity in the country, and especially the south island—think a via ferrata like Wildwire Wanaka or bungy jumping, which originated here. December is great for: skipping the velvet rope

From December 8 to 10, the world’s arterati will descend once more for that OTT culturefest known as Art Basel. Unlike the OG mothership in Switzerland that’s squarely for po-faced pros, this fiesta was deliberately founded to offer an irresistibly frothy combo of work and play for even the heaviest-weight collector. There’s a chance to snap up masterpieces at the main show, which has just seen a new leader take over from longtime czar Marc Spiegler, plus satellite fairs like Untitled, NADA, or the furniturefest DesignMiami.

Last year’s high-society highlights included Prada’s DJ-powered makeover of the Faena Forum, a 30th-anniversary celebration of Madonna’s Sex book showcasing its raunchy prints that was underwritten by Yves Saint Laurent, and a VIP room that featured two full-size replicas of work by reclusive pop artist Yayoi Kusama. Buy a ticket to the fairs and sweet talk a few gallerinas into adding your name to a list or two.

10. Kennebunkport, Maine

December is great for: off-season adventures in New England

Don’t assume that this breezy coastal town in Maine is a summertime-only spot. (Though biking back from Goose Rocks beach for a fresh cooked lobster roll from Nunan’s every evening on a warm day here is a dreamy all-American vacation.) The surge of visits in peak season has helped drive greater interest in visiting when the weather might be a little chillier, but the crowds will have significantly thinned.

In December, there’s the added allure of the 11-day Christmas Prelude, which runs through December 10. It’s a kitschy, delightful celebration of all things festive and New England, featuring everything from candlelit caroling to a dog costume parade; Kennebunkport’s Santa swaps out a sleigh for a more venue-appropriate vehicle—he always arrives for the celebrations via lobster boat. Don’t miss the tree, either, which is constructed entirely of vintage lobster traps.

Many hotels here have winterized their offerings to better cater to off-season visitors, like the cabins of Hidden Pond, set in a 60-acre forest of balsam and fir. The stand-alone room decor is heavy on wood and wool, and the hotel offers activities like stargazing on crisp, clear winter nights.

For those arriving from outside New England, the best route is to fly into Boston—connected by the major airlines to countless hubs across the country—and drive 90 minutes or so up the coast.

San Francisco & Yosemite Express 3D/2N (From Los Angeles)

The tour was good, my personal preference would have been to spend more time in San Francisco, doing the iconic things like a trolley car ride and an Alcatraz tour, rather than the random stops along the way. Our tour guide was great - however, right at the end of the tour - when I reached my destination - it was not the hotel that I was informed it was going to be, and both the tour guide and the driver couldn't get out of there quick enough, so I felt stranded...luckily I had been following where we were headed on my phone's GPS, otherwise I would have been totally unprepared. That was quite disappointing...I was going to tip them both - but they literally disappeared so quickly I barely got a chance to even say goodbye. I was also disappointed, as the literature all said Yosemite park, but we didn't get there because it was winter...fair enough - but I wasn't the only one who didn't understand we weren't going there..and we felt a little deceived...my tour itinerary still said Yosemite park on it, so that is where I thought we were going....

UNC Basketball Schedule Update: Explorers to Visit Tar Heels

The 2024-25 UNC basketball squad will reportedly host La Salle in December.

La Salle, gearing up for its third campaign under former 13-year Temple head coach Fran Dunphy, will take on the UNC basketball program for the first time in over a quarter century when the Explorers travel to the Dean E. Smith Center next season.

The matchup is set for Dec. 14, college basketball bracketologist and national schedule guru Rocco Miller reported this week.

While the 2023-24 Explorers showed signs of improvement, they managed only six wins in Atlantic 10 play en route to a 16-17 overall record. Their non-conference slate included a 95-66 loss to Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

UNC basketball is 2-1 in the all-time series against La Salle. The last time they met was on Jan. 9, 1988, a 96-82 home win by the Tar Heels.

North Carolina will host La Salle as part of its 24-25 non-conference schedule, per sources. The date is set for Saturday, December 14th inside the Dean Dome. As for other outings on what will be an 11-game non-conference schedule, about half of the information now appears in place:

• Nov. 25-27, Maui Invitational (field consists UNC, Auburn, Colorado, Dayton, Iowa State, Memphis, Michigan State, and defending back-to-back national champion UConn)
• Dec. 14 vs. La Salle
• Dates not yet set for the CBS Sports Classic battle against UCLA and the Jumpman Invitational showdown with Florida; opponent and date for the ACC-SEC Challenge remain unknown

At least 21 migrants dead after boat capsizes off coast of Djibouti

Children among those killed in second fatal incident in two weeks close to the Horn of Africa, says UN agency

At least 21 people have died after a boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti , the UN’s migration agency has said.

It was the second fatal maritime accident in two weeks off the Horn of Africa nation, which lies on the perilous so-called eastern migration route from Africa to the Middle East.

Another vessel carrying mainly Ethiopian migrants sank in the same area on 8 April, claiming the lives of several dozen people.

Tanja Pacifico, the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) chief of mission in Djibouti, told AFP in Nairobi that 21 bodies had been recovered, while 23 people were still missing.

Another 33 people survived the disaster, she said late on Tuesday.

“Tragedy as boat capsizes off Djibouti coast with 77 migrants on board including children,” the IOM had said in an earlier post on X, giving a toll of at least 16 dead and 28 missing.

It said the Djibouti IOM branch was “supporting local authorities with search and rescue effort”.

Yvonne Ndege, a spokesperson for the agency, told AFP the fatalities included children and a baby, without offering further details.

Berhanu Tsegaye, Ethiopia’s ambassador to Djibouti, said on X that the vessel was carrying Ethiopian migrants from Yemen when it went down on Monday night off Godoria in north-eastern Djibouti. He said 33 people, including one woman, survived.

Berhanu expressed his “deep sorrow ... over the succession of horrific disasters”, adding: “I reiterate that legal measures should be taken against illegal human smugglers who put the lives of our citizens at risk.”

Another vessel carrying more than 60 people sank off the coast of Godoria on 8 April, according to the IOM and the Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti.

The IOM said at the time that the bodies of 38 migrants, including children, were recovered, while another six people were missing.

The Ethiopian embassy had said the boat was carrying Ethiopian migrants from Djibouti to war-torn Yemen.
