The Wildlife

The waters surrounding Freycinet National Park are home to diverse and remarkable wildlife. Keep a look out for sea eagles roosting on the granite cliffs, pods of dolphins surfing the bow wave and cormorants manning the crags of Schouten Passage plus Australian fur seals hauling out along the coast.

Join in the search for whales such as the humpback and southern right as they migrate between September to December and May to July.

Spot diverse birdlife including albatross, shearwaters, diving gannets, little penguins and cormorants.

Our vessel Schouten Passage II is a Tasmanian built, 150 seat catamaran ideal for exploring the east coast of Tasmania. The spacious enclosed vessel contains comfortable seating across two fully air conditioned lounge areas - The Vista Lounge and The Sky Lounge.

Vista Lounge

The Vista Lounge offers floor to ceiling windows for optimum viewing from the comfort of your seat, complemented by spacious outdoor decks so you can immerse yourself in the experience. 

It offers a licensed bar and cafe serving local beverages, hot drinks and treats for purchase.  The Vista Lounge has three rest rooms, with one fully accessible. 

Vista Lounge Including Lunch Included in your Vista Lounge with Lunch ticket is a ploughman’s style lunch featuring smoked meats, salad, cheeses served alongside a locally baked bread roll, fruit and a sweet treat.  Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements.

Sky Lounge (Adults Only)

The Sky Lounge is on the upper deck of Schouten Passage II. The adults only lounge with banquette style seating for up to 30 passengers provides an intimate experience, with direct access to the Captains bridge and private viewing deck.

Morning tea, lunch and beverages are included in your Sky Lounge ticket. 

Enjoy plump local oysters, alongside salmon and smoked meats, breads, cheeses and salad served with the East Coast's renowned wines and artisan brews. There are two rest rooms on the upper deck.

Our cruise departs and finishes at our Wineglass Bay Cruises Booking Office, 61 Jetty Road, Coles Bay.

To get to Coles Bay from Hobart head north on the Tasman A3 Highway for 185kms (approx 2½hrs drive). From Launceston, head south on National Highway 1 onto Lake Leake B34 Highway (approx 2hrs drive).  

Things You Need to Know

• We operate every day except Christmas Day.
• We have no age or height restrictions for the Vista Lounge.
• Our boat is enclosed which protects you from the elements, however we still suggest you dress warmly.
• Make sure you bring your camera to capture those awe-inspiring moments.
• We reserve the right to cancel or vary any trip and will incur no liability for any such cancellation or alteration.
• We don't cancel bookings due to low numbers. If it happens to be just you, we'll still show you an experience of a lifetime.

During the COVID-19 pandemic we will not allow guests to join our tours if we believe they are unwell.  If you are feeling unwell or display flu-like symptoms we would encourage you to contact us and cancel your booking.

If you book directly with us, we have a very flexible cancellation policy:

• No cancellation fees if you need to cancel due to COVID  right up to the time of departure.  This includes if you are unwell or if you have to change your travel plans due to flight changes or travel restrictions.  We will happily move your booking to another day or provide you with a full refund.  Please note you need to advise us prior to departure so that we have an opportunity to re-sell the seats. 
• For non-COVID related cancellations our normal cancellation policy applies . We reserve the right to charge 100% for cancellations within 24 hours of departure.  Bookings are fully flexible up to 24 hours prior to the tour departure. 

Please note that if you book through a third-party website or travel agent, they each impose their own cancellation policies and restrictions.  

Cruise Route

If weather conditions mean we are unable to safely get to Wineglass Bay, we will offer a full refund if you decide not to travel with us. However, we do encourage you to join us on our alternative route which we think is as spectacular as the Wineglass Bay route, exploring the rugged coastline of the Schouten Island Group, its abundant wildlife including a large Australian fur seal haulout. In extremely bad weather we will cancel the cruise and offer a full refund or alternative travel date if available.

Upon booking this product, you will receive confirmation in the form of a tour voucher. Please print the voucher and present it on the day of the tour. Your tour operator's contact details are included on the tour voucher.

Child ticket: Ages 4 - 14 years Infants under the age of 4 can take part in this activity for free. The local weather is changeable so be sure to pack warm clothing. This tour won't get to Wineglass Bay Lookout, please make your own way after the cruise if you'd like to take pictures.

Vista Lounge and Sky Lounge

The Vista Lounge offers floor to ceiling windows, comfortable indoor and spacious outdoor viewing decks, baby change facilities and disabled amenities. The Sky Lounge offers privacy, comfort, direct access to the bridge and stunning views from the top deck. Sky Lounge guests are also welcome to use the downstairs areas. The Sky Lounge is an adults only area , including morning tea, snacks and all drinks throughout the day, and only available from September to May.

The Sky Lounge experience caters for a maximum of 30 guests on the upper deck of our vessel, Schouten Passage II. The Sky Lounge is an adults only experience (18 years plus).

The Sky Lounge has a licensed bar with all beverages including hot drinks included alongside morning tea and individual lunch platters of oysters, smoked meats, salads, Tasmanian cheeses, salad, fruit, and local breads. The private upper deck gives a great space to view wildlife – look out for dolphins, seals, seabirds and whales on their annual migration from May to July and September to December. Sky Lounge guests also have access to the Captains Deck.

Sky Lounge is $290.00 and includes 4.5 eco-cruise with expert commentary from experienced crew, morning tea, lunch and all beverages.

Do the Sky Lounge experience

We were unable to do the cruise to Wineglass Bay because of the water conditions. However, the shorter cruise we did was excellent. This company is a true ambassador for Tasmanian products. Local oysters, local and extremely high quality wines in abundance, and local products in the bento boxes made by the local resort. We should also mention Kylie's wonderful service and the pick up from our accommodation. This cruise was the highlight in our recent holiday.

Loved this cruise. Guys were friendly and informative taking their time to stop if we spotted anything interesting like whales. Nice boat and yummy lunch.

Last minute booking. Couldn’t get to Wineglass Bay as Northerly wind would have made it too rough. Instead a shorter cruise at reduced price but still 3.5hr. Enjoyed being out in the Tasmin Sea in a bit of weather but boat stable and comfortable tho can understand how some might have found it a little rough Crew informative and enthusiastic Decent lunch provided - in a sort of posh airline food box! Went for lower deck ( wine not included and no seafood platter) Advantage was access to front deck ( more raw experience) but needed to pay for wine. Still 4 glasses and 2 beer for $52 meant you would need to drink a lot of “free” wine to cover the extra cost - tho sure sea food would be good. Well worth doing.

We paid extra for the Sky Lounge and weren't disappointed with the access to the bridge and range of food and drinks available. We appreciated the freshly made coffees delivered as soon as we boarded too. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable and very hospitable. We were lucky to see a humpback whale, dolphins and seal during our cruise. It was not sunny most of the time but still pleasant outside in the fresh air. A little bit rough outside the bays meant that some passengers got a bit seasick but staff did offer seasick pills beforehand and were attentive throughout. We enjoyed our lunch with wine and freshly shucked oysters and the fabulous views of the bay. This cruise was one of the highlights of our trip to Tasmania - we would definitely return to Coles Bay.

Whilst appreciating there are some things that cannot be controlled, we were a bit disappointed in our trip. On the positive side the staff were great, very friendly and helpful throughout. The trip itself is lovely. We were not lucky with sunshine, but the natural beauty was lovely. On the less positive side, the captain gave commentary all trip..I know this because we could hear some noise coming from the outside speakers, just no idea what was being said. Unless you stay in the cabin, and who would, it is not possible to hear. I asked about turning them up and was told this was not possible and to move nearer the speakers. So basically the choice was to see or hear. Surely it would't cost much to upgrade. Also the lunch was certainly of a great quality, mostly, just lacking in quantity. I am not a big eater but was let down by the size of the portions. The bread roll was so stale it was almost inedible. So, some pros and cons. Would I recommend it/ I would, with reservations.

We had the most wonderful cruise today. The weather was less than perfect but it is what it is. Very detailed commentary by a knowledge Skipper (Duncan) Our English guests were delighted to discover that our Purser (Joe) was from the next village to them in Norfolk, England. Beautiful salmon, oysters and seemingly endless wine! Gambolling Dolphins and hump back whales breaching were breathtaking. Highly recommended!

Nice leisurely cruise to start the day then a scrumptious lunch enjoyed on the bay. Deck hands and skipper were engaging, friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. We then had an exhilarating return through some awe inspiring waves which the skipper handled with ease. Great trip from start to finish.

The trip on the boat was magical. Natural scenery, saw whales and seals, and excellent commentary. Even able to take baby in her pram. Ploughman lunch was delicious!

Thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. Lunch was fine. The GF option was the same as my husbands minus the bread roll. Lovely time spent in Wineglass Bay with the motor off. Very peaceful. Great commentary. Crew were very friendly. Great day out.

This was a great experience, even with some rain on the day. The views are stunning and the crew were great. The captain made a point of finding wildlife like dolphins and seals for us as well as going close to show the magnificent cliffs. The booking process was easy too.
