The World Snooker Tour has announced a new ranking Grand Prix in the Chinese city of Xi’an, starting from the 2024/25 season. It will start with a total prize money pot of £850,000, with the winner receiving £177,000, but the sum will increase in subsequent years. The Xi’an Grand Prix will run from August 19-25 in its inaugural year. It is the fifth confirmed event for China next season.

The 2024 Johnstone’s Paint Tour Championship gets under way on Monday with a dozen of this season’s best players featuring in a high-profile draw.

It represents the second-last ranking event on the 2023/24 calendar, with just the World Snooker Championship to follow later in April.

Staged at the Manchester Central for the first time, only the top 12 competitors from the one-year rankings list have qualified.

Tour Championship prize money Champion: £150,000 Runner-up: £60,000 Semi-Finals: £40,000 Quarter-Finals: £30,000 Round of 12: £20,000 Highest break: £10,000

Who has won the Tour Championship?

Since 2019, the Tour Championship has been the culminating event in a series of three in which the lineups are determined by the one-year rankings.

Ronnie O’Sullivan prevailed in its inaugural staging before Stephen Maguire emerged victoriously in a delayed behind-closed-doors edition in 2020.

Neil Robertson subsequently won back-to-back Tour Championship titles, with Shaun Murphy most recently winning in Hull 12 months ago.

Murphy, Robertson, and Maguire have all failed to qualify this season – making O’Sullivan the only former champion in the 2024 Tour Championship draw.

Who is in the 2024 Tour Championship draw?

For the first time in the event’s history, the field has been increased from eight players to 12.

The reason for this is likely what materialised in 2023, when a host of marquee names endured disappointing campaigns and failed to qualify.

As a result of the change, many feel that unnecessary damage has been inflicted on the tournament’s identity and prestige.

Nevertheless, the 2024 Tour Championship draw still boasts an incredibly strong lineup comprising players ranked inside the world’s top 16.

As this season’s highest earners from results in ranking tournaments, Judd Trump, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Zhang Anda, and Ding Junhui are the top four seeds.

Their reward is an automatic bye through to the quarter-finals of the competition.

The remaining eight contenders will battle it out for the other four quarter-final spots.

One tie immediately stands out, with Mark Allen drawn to face John Higgins in a blockbuster first-round battle.

Elsewhere, there are all-English fixtures between Ali Carter and Barry Hawkins, and Mark Selby and Gary Wilson.

Mark Williams encounters Tom Ford, who like Zhang and Wilson will participate in the Tour Championship for the first time.

2024 Tour Championship Draw Round of 12 Mark Williams (8) 10-9 Tom Ford (9) Mark Allen (5) 10-7 John Higgins (12) Gary Wilson (6) 10-8 Mark Selby (11) Barry Hawkins (7) 8-10 Ali Carter (10)

Quarter-Finals Judd Trump (1) 4-10 Mark Williams (8) Ding Junhui (4) 8-10 Mark Allen (5) Zhang Anda (3) 8-10 Gary Wilson (6) Ronnie O’Sullivan (2) 10-2 Ali Carter (10)

Semi-Finals Mark Williams (8) 10-5 Mark Allen (5) Gary Wilson (6) 7-10 Ronnie O’Sullivan (2) Final (bo19) . Mark Williams (8) 10-5 Ronnie O’Sullivan (2)

What are the ranking subplots?

The race is well and truly back on at the top of the official rolling two-year snooker rankings list.

Ronnie O’Sullivan has been the world number one since mid-2022, but that status will be under serious threat in the next few weeks.

Thanks to his victories in five ranking events this season, Judd Trump has narrowed the gap considerably.

In fact, Trump is so close to O’Sullivan now that he’ll usurp his fellow Englishman if he wins the event, or if he reaches the final and O’Sullivan doesn’t.

Mark Allen, meanwhile, remains in pole position to end the 2023/24 term as the world number one, with the Antrim potter at the top in the provisional end-of-season standings.

Results at the Tour Championship will also help determine the specific seeding positions for the top 16 at the Crucible Theatre this year.

Who is the betting favourite?

With ten titles between them this season, sharing five pieces of silverware apiece, it’s hardly surprising that Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump are the two betting favourites.

O’Sullivan is just about favoured with most online bookies at about 6/4, with Trump boasting odds of around 2/1.

The two rivals are on opposite sides of the draw, which could set up a tantalising final in what would be a repeat of the World Grand Prix title decider from January.

The only other multiple champions from the 2023/24 season are Mark Allen and Gary Wilson, who have outright odds of around 14/1 and 50/1 respectively.

How to watch the 2024 Tour Championship?

There are several options available to watch the upcoming snooker live, depending on your location.

I’d have kept it at eight players to preserve the one table setup throughout but feel any diminishing of its prestige is marginal at best. This is my favourite event of the ITV portfolio. Every match remains two sessions.

' src=

Would tend to agree. It’s definitely a pity that it has changed to 12, but there has been a bit of an overreaction to it really. I’m looking forward to seeing what the atmosphere will be like at the new venue.

Hopefully “best friends” Ronnie and Ali to meet in last 8

WPBSA Q Tour Goes Global for 2023/24!

17th July 2023

The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association Group of organisations (WPBSA) has today announced the launch of WPBSA Q Tour Global which will carry four World Snooker Tour cards.

  • View full information about WPBSA Q Tour Global 2023/24

Following two successful seasons based within the UK and mainland Europe, this season’s WPBSA Q Tour Global will for the first time incorporate regional events held around the world, each offering access to an extended Q Tour Playoff at the end of the season.

WPBSA Q Tour UK/Europe

As in previous seasons, the rebranded WPBSA Q Tour UK/Europe will retain its previous format, with an expanded calendar of seven events to be held across the season.

To include four tournaments within the UK and a further three in mainland Europe, the circuit will once again see players compete to finish the season as the top ranked player and earn a place on the World Snooker Tour.

The next 16-ranked players (to include each event champion) will be guaranteed to qualify for the season-end Q Tour Global Playoff.

Each Q Tour UK/Europe event will carry an increased prize fund of over £14,000 and will be open to players from around the world. As in previous seasons, 48 players (see below) will be seeded through to Saturday’s last 64, to be joined by 16 qualifiers.

Q Tour Global

For the first time, the WPBSA Q Tour Global will incorporate regional Q Tour Series’ staged around the world as part of the planned international expansion of Q Tour.

The WPBSA welcomes expressions of interest to stage Q Tour tournaments from recognised organisations and national federations which share our vision for high-quality amateur events.

As part of the WPBSA’s commitment to the international growth of our sport, the leading players from these Regional Q Tour events will qualify to compete at the Q Tour Global Playoff, alongside players from Q Tour UK/Europe.

Players competing in Q Tour events outside of UK/Europe, must be resident for a minimum six months to be eligible to play in these events.

Q Tour Playoff

The WPBSA Q Tour Global Playoff will be relaunched for the 2023/24 season with three places on the World Snooker Tour to be won for the first time.

As in previous seasons, the Playoff will include the winners of Q Tour UK/Europe events, followed the highest ranked remaining players up to 16 players. They will be joined by a further eight players from regional Q Tour events held around the world. Should these places not be taken, they will be filled by additional players from the Q Tour UK/Europe Rankings.

In recognition of the increased status of the Playoff, the event will be held over three days and will be made up of three sections of eight players, meaning qualifiers into this season’s prestigious grand final will only need to win three matches at the Playoff to earn a place on the World Snooker Tour. Quarter-finals will be played over the best of nine frames, semi-finals the best of 11 frames and the finals over the best of 19 frames.

The Playoff will also carry a prize fund of almost £20,000 for the first time, with each tour card winner set to take home £2,000.  Each qualifier will be guaranteed to earn at least £500, with prize money increasing to £750, £1,000 and the £2,000 top prize.

“The Ultimate Test”

Jason Ferguson , WPBSA Chairman said: “Our WPBSA Q Tour has quickly become a key cornerstone in the amateur snooker calendar, offering direct access to the World Snooker Tour and regular competition at high-quality venues.

“We are therefore now delighted to be able to launch the WPBSA Q Tour Global, which for the first time enables players around the world to be able to compete and potentially earn their place on the professional circuit. It is particularly important to add that this new global model will serve players all over the world with life changing opportunities. It is also important to state that our vision includes working with federations and partners around the world who share our vision of a truly open global sport.

“I am hugely excited by the potential of Q Tour and in particular now the Global Playoff, with long frame formats, I can only speak on this as a former snooker player, when I say this is the ultimate test for players aiming to take the next step with a full-time career on the World Snooker Tour.

“We will soon be writing to our many partners and friends around the world, inviting them to join us in this truly global plan.”

The R&K Guide To Moscow

The World Cup is upon us, but you could argue that it’s already a relic from another era, a time when Putin was looking for peaceable engagement with the West, before he annexed Crimea and unleashed his trolls on the world. But if ordinary Russians are supposed to play the part of pariah, they haven’t been told. It has been a long time since Moscow was this pleasant to visit. The city center is safe, sanitized, ready for your visit. Yes, the calm is a sign of an increasingly efficient autocracy. But we’ve known Moscow through many iterations, and for the casual visitor, this is one of the best yet. (Visit our St. Petersburg guide here.)

International exhibition NEFTEGAZ-2022

The film festival has been held since 1935. Second oldest after the Venice Film Festival. Moscow International Film Festival is one of the most important events in the film industry. This is the most favourite festival of Muscovites and guests of the city. Interesting events take place at 80 venues throughout the city. Concerts and master classes await visitors, where you can try yourself in Gzhel painting, clay modelling, decoupage. You can make jewellery, toys and gifts to loved ones, as well as send a letter to Santa Claus. On Red Square, everyone is interested in not only skating on the rink themselves, but also enjoying the colourful ice show from the famous Russian skaters.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
