Do you need a visa to visit Sri Lanka? Probably, and we can tell you how to get one © Val Shevchenko / Shutterstock

Sri Lanka may be known as the teardrop isle (due to its distinctive shape), but the country’s refreshingly straightforward visa system shouldn’t be a source of too much anguish for travelers.

Here’s our guide to navigating the entry requirements for visiting Sri Lanka as a tourist, with information on visa types, costs, and how to apply for one.

Who needs to apply for a visa for Sri Lanka?

With the exception of citizens from Singapore , the Republic of Maldives , and the Republic of Seychelles , all travelers will require a visa to visit Sri Lanka. Fortunately the process for acquiring one is relatively straightforward.

Applying for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

For trips to Sri Lanka of up to 30 days, visas (also known as ETAs) can be obtained from the government’s Department of Immigration and Emigration website . The application involves completing a simple form and making an online payment, with no need to submit passport copies, documents, or photographs. An application is also available upon arrival.

It costs US$50 for a double-entry, 30-day tourist visa (US$20 for residents of Afghanistan , Bangladesh , Bhutan , India , Nepal , and Pakistan ). Two-day transit visas are free and only necessary if you plan to leave the airport. There is also no charge for tourist visas for children under the age of 12.

It’s possible to check the status of an ETA online. Once approved, print out a copy of the ETA approval notice to show immigration officials on arrival in Sri Lanka. For an ETA to be valid, you must arrive in Sri Lanka within three months from the date of issue.

ETAs can also be applied for through travel agents and in person at Sri Lankan embassies or consulates ahead of a trip. Embassies can offer longer visas, such as those granting entry for 90 days.

In addition to an ETA, visitors to Sri Lanka need to make sure they have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, a confirmed return ticket and sufficient funds to meet their expenses during the stay.

Can I apply for a tourist visa on arrival in Sri Lanka?

A limited facility runs at Bandaranaike International Airport (Sri Lanka’s main international airport), offering ETAs on arrival. These visas cost more than those obtained before travel (US$60; or US$25 for residents of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan). It’s also worth noting if your visa application is unsuccessful for any reason, you will be returned to your original destination.

How do I extend a tourist visa in Sri Lanka?

You can renew a 30-day tourist visa up to three times once in Sri Lanka. The initial extension is usually granted for 60 days, and the maximum length of a tourist visa is 270 days. Visitors wishing to apply for an extension should make sure they do so before their current visa expires and must ensure their passport is valid for at least two months after their intended stay.

Applications can be submitted via the online visa extension portal . The fee depends on your nationality and length of stay. Contact the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo should you need further advice on extending your stay.

Sri Lanka visa: Requirements, application procedure and airport formalities

Updated: September 6, 2023

Sri Lanka visa image

A Sri Lanka visa is required for all nationalities in the world to enter Sri Lanka as a tourist. Anyone traveling to Sri Lanka must first obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online. On arrival at the airport, a visa will be issued and stuck in your passport. The visa will be a small sticker with a QR code, about a quarter the size of your passport page.

There are a handful of nationalities that cannot apply for an ETA online. They must seek help from a local travel agent in Sri Lanka to represent them as a sponsor and apply on their behalf at the Immigration and Emigration in Colombo.

SRI LANKA ETA ONLINE (aka, SRI LANKA VISA ONLINE)

Sri Lanka ETA

Sri Lanka ETA is for tourism, visiting friends/relatives, yoga training and medical treatment purposes.

Sri Lanka ETA is also referred to as a visa, online visa or e-Visa. But technically, ETA is not a visa, it’s just an authorization necessary to travel to Sri Lanka.

Once you arrive in Sri Lanka, at the first port of entry, the immigration officer will issue a visa, print and stick it in your passport. The sticker is about one-fourth the size of your passport page and contains a visa number and QR code.

How long is the Sri Lanka ETA valid for

Sri Lanka ETA is valid for 6 months from the date of approval.

You can travel anytime within that 6 months and you will get 30 days on entry.

When to apply for Sri Lanka ETA

Apply for your Sri Lanka ETA at least 2 weeks before your trip.

ETA processing time is 24 hours. In most cases, you will receive your ETA approval immediately. But in some rare cases, the processing can take up to 10 working days.

There have been incidents where the fee payments weren’t working and travelers had to get the ETA on arrival.

Applying at least 2 weeks before your trip will give you ample time to handle any unexpected issues like the above.

How long can you stay in Sri Lanka on an ETA

Sri Lanka ETA allows you to stay up to 30 days.

If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you can extend your Sri Lanka visa online or at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo for 60 days. If you need even more time, you can extend it again for another 90 days.

The total time you can stay in Sri Lanka on a single ETA cannot exceed 180 days.

Sri Lanka ETA application process

Start your Sri Lanka ETA application online . It takes about 10 minutes to fill. You don’t need any documentation or digital photos to upload.

I have a detailed article on how to fill and apply for Sri Lanka ETA online. You can just follow along with the steps and you will receive your ETA within minutes.

RELATED: How to get Sri Lanka ETA – A step-by-step guide

Sri Lanka ETA processing time is 24 hours.

In most cases, the ETA will be approved right away. But in some rare cases, the processing can take up to 10 working days.

ETA application tracking

The ETA application status can be tracked on the Sri Lanka ETA Check Status page . You would need your ETA confirmation or reference number. If you don’t remember your ETA confirmation or reference number, you can also use your passport number and nationality to track your ETA status.

SRI LANKA ETA ON ARRIVAL (aka, SRI LANKA VISA ON ARRIVAL)

There have been quite a few payment-related issues with the online ETA system. Therefore the Sri Lanka Immigration and Emigration Department has introduced “ETA on arrival” for those who have tried to obtain an ETA online but failed due to payment issues.

Keep in mind that some refer to Sri Lanka ETA on arrival as Sri Lanka visa on arrival. They both are the same.

If you see a payment error during your online ETA application, print the screen with the error. This will work as proof for you to board the flight and obtain an ETA on arrival at the airport.

How long can you stay in Sri Lanka on the ETA on arrival

Sri Lanka ETA on arrival allows you to stay up to 30 days.

If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you can extend your visa online or at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo for 60 days. If you need even more time, you can extend it again for another 90 days.

ETA on arrival application process

Sri Lanka ETA on arrival counters are available at the following international airports only.

  • Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo
  • Mattala International Airport in Mattala

You will have to fill and submit a paper application. You will be charged a fee of $5 USD in addition to the usual ETA fee for this “ETA on arrival” facility.

The entire procedure may take a few minutes to 30 minutes depending on how busy the ETA on arrival counter is.

You can make the payment in USD, LKR or its equivalent in any major foreign currency in cash or using a credit card.

You must present the following documents.

  • Completed ETA application form
  • Your original passport
  • ETA fee payment in cash or credit card in USD, LKR or its equivalent in any major foreign currency

No photo is required to obtain ETA on arrival.

ETA on arrival fee

The fee for obtaining ETA on arrival at the airport is $25 USD for nationals from SAARC countries and $40 USD for all other nationalities. It’s just $5 USD additional compared to the fee for obtaining the ETA online.

Processing time

The ETA on arrival procedure may take a few minutes to about 30 minutes depending on the crowd. Since most people can obtain ETA online, it’s safe to assume that there won’t be many at the “ETA on arrival” counters.

SRI LANKA ETA FROM COLOMBO (BY A SRI LANKAN SPONSOR)

The following nationalities cannot apply for ETA online or on arrival. They would need to apply at the Immigration and Emigration Department in Colombo through a local sponsor in Sri Lanka. This can be a travel agent in Sri Lanka who can represent you as your sponsor.

NOTE I was told that nationals holding Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and Somalia passports also cannot apply for ETA online and they would need a local sponsor in Sri Lanka. This is the information I received from a local travel agent and I don’t have an official source for this information.

SRI LANKA TOURIST VISA FROM THE EMBASSY

Sri Lankan missions abroad do not issue short-term visas. They only issue long-term visas for stays up to 90 days. For short-term visas, you will have to apply for an ETA online or on arrival.

Those seeking to stay 90 days or longer in Sri Lanka can also get an ETA online and then extend the visa from within Sri Lanka.

Long-term visas are only for special purposes and you must have a valid reason to apply.

When to apply

Apply for your Sri Lanka tourist visa at least two weeks before your travel dates. The visa processing takes 3-7 business days and if you are receiving your passport by mail, it can take longer.

  • Visa application form (you can download from the Sri Lanka mission website)
  • Original passport with at least one blank page
  • One recent passport-size photo
  • Invitation or sponsor letter from your host in Sri Lanka
  • Bank statements showing adequate funds
  • A letter explaining the reason for requesting a long-stay visa
  • Return flight tickets

One recent passport-size photo is required for a Sri Lanka tourist visa application.

The visa fee is about $135 USD charged in the local currency where the Sri Lankan mission is located.

Tourist visa processing time is 3-7 business days.

This visa waiver is for a maximum stay of 30 days and can be obtained upon arrival or through an online application. The free visa waiver initiative continues until March 31, 2024, and allows for double entry from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka after October 24, 2023.

/ Last Update : 2023/05/31

Extend visa in sri lanka.

If you’re looking to extend your visa in Sri Lanka, it’s important to note that obtaining the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival is a mandatory requirement for all travelers

How can I extend my Sri Lanka visa?

There are two methods to extend your Sri Lanka visa:

In-Person Application:

To extend your visa, you need to submit an application to the visa section of the Department of Immigration & Emigration (Head Office). This can be done by visiting the department in person.

Online Application:

Alternatively, you can also apply for a visa extension through the online visit visa extension portal called e-Visa Extension. This provides a convenient and efficient way to extend your visa without the need for an in-person visit.

Can I apply for another visa before it expires?

If you are a tourist who entered Sri Lanka within the landing endorsement period granted by the authorized officers at the port of entry, you can apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires.

How many times can a tourist visa be extended?

In the first instance you can get an extension of up to 90 days from the date of arrival.

Secondly, another 90 days summing up to 180 days from the date of arrival.

Documents Required for Extending a Visit Visa:

If you have obtained a short-term visit visa, you must acquire the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering Sri Lanka. Foreigners should not enter the country without obtaining an ETA.

For a Tourist Visa, the following documents are needed:

✓ Return air ticket. ✓ Address and telephone number of the place of accommodation. ✓ Completed application form with a photograph of the applicant. ✓ Valid Passport. It is compulsory for the applicant to be present during the application and collection of the visa. This requirement is applicable only for those submitting applications at the Department of Immigration and Emigration (Head Office).

For a Business Visa, the following documents are required:

✓ Completed application form with a photograph of the applicant. ✓ Request letter from the business institute/company/agency to extend the business visa. ✓ Valid Passport. ✓ The relevant person or an authorized representative from the business institute should be present to collect the visa. Really helpful article.

I read somewhere that you can get a Visa extension online by reapplying for the 30 day ETA – is that correct? Everywhere else says you have to go to the immigration office but would be great to avoid the trip as it doesn’t fit well with our travel plans

Thank you for the great Guide!

We are planning to travel to Weligama for 60-80 days and will have to get the ETA online. Is it going to be a problem if we indicate the tickets back with dates that are after 60 days, rather than 30 days that ETA visa will be for? Also, does it make sense to go to the immigration office right away after arrival and extend visa, or better to come later?

Thank you for your comment. Already answered your question. Please ready below

Q2: Sri Lanka consulate told me on the phone that there is maybe the possibility to get an extended visa already at the Airport when entering the country. Do you know if that is correct/possible?

Hello! Thanks for the article! How much will cost each extension? And If I come by online visa and plan to be in SriLanka for 180 days, can I have back tickets booked at the end of 180 days period? Or they should be booked on 30 days expirations of first online visa?

I recently extended my visa for another month. Arrived at 8:30 and had my passport back at 11:30 which I was quite impressed with (I expected to be there all day). I wasn’t asked for proof of funds nor a return flight – not to say they won’t of course.

Thank you very much for your invaluable feedback. We are extremely happy to hear that our blog helped you to get the visa extended within just 3 hours, which took around 2 days earlier. Yes, they don’t ask for those in some instances but it is always safe to keep them with you to avoid unnecessary hassle

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Hi Rustic Tour Guide. Such an informative article, thank you! Do you know if there are any restrictions on travelling in/out of Sri Lanka whilst on an extended tourist visa? I may need to go back to UK for a few days. Thanks in advance, Briony

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

I have a similar question to Bryony! In January, I got my visa extended until the 20th April. I went to Thailand for a week to see a friend and came back yesterday. I was surprised to find out that I needed to buy another 30 day visa at Colombo airport to come back in. Is my original three month visa extension now invalid? Ie do I need to get my 30 day visa (the one I had to get yesterday) extended again? Or am I still ok to stay until the 20th April? I’m somewhat confused, would really appreciate your help! Caroline

Hi Caroline,

Let me explain you which is not explained anywhere on the internet. When you apply for online visa (ETA) or On Arrival Visa, you get a 30 day visa with dual entry. However, if you extend it before expiring (ie within first 30 days of your arrival), then you dual entry option gets cancelled automatically and if you leave the country, your whole visa gets cancelled as well. In that case you are considered a new traveler and you will have to get a new visa to re-enter the country. So, in your case, you will have to get a new extension to your new visa if you would like to stay until April.

However, since you get a dual entry with your online 30 day visa, you can leave and re-enter the country during first 30 days of your arrival as long as you have not extended it. Hope this helps and clear !

Ah thank you for your help! I had assumed it was double entry because the ETA was. Oh well! Glad you are here to clarify things!

Yes, your visa gets cancelled if you leave the country whilst on extension. So, you will need a new visa to re-enter the country if you leave for UK in between. However, since you get a dual entry with your online 30 day visa, you can leave and re-enter the country during first 30 days of your arrival as long as you have not extended it.

Got it, thanks so much for taking the time to explain. This is a really useful blog post!

Hi Briony ! its pleasure to help you !! Have a nice trip !!

I don’t have an outbound flight as yet, has this typically been a problem for people trying to extend their visas?

We recommend you to take it with you to avoid unnecessary time waste and rejections.

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Somebody asked the same question above but it hasn’t yet been answered — I will be going to the office to get a visa extension for my family (wife and 2 kids). Does anyone know if everybody needs to be there at the office, or if I can just bring their forms, photos and passports? Thx!

Except Kids, Others are advised to come ! Parents need to have documents to prove absent children`s custody !

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Hi Team I was in SriLanka recently (with my wife) for 6 weeks holiday. I extended my visa for another 30 days just before the 30 day current visa, through someone known to immigration office. I paid him 25000Rs for both of us. Is this the correct amount or not. I believe he robbed our money. Please let me know what is the correct amount in total for 2 of us. Thanks Sunil

Dear Sunil, Thank you for reaching to us. We feel sorry about the situation you ran into. Please provide us a little more information. What is your residential country. tks !

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Hi, I’m also interested in knowing if it is possible for only me to be present to apply for extensions for our whole family (me, my husband and our baby). I imagine the long wait will make my 6-month-old infant quite cranky and it would be nice to avoid that. Also is it possible (and if yes, then what is needed) to extend the stay beyond 90 days? We would love to stay for 115 days in total.

Except Kids, Others are advised to come ! Parents need to have documents to prove absent children`s custody

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Is a flight out required for the extension?

Hi Daniel, We recommend you to take it with you to avoid unnecessary time waste and rejections.

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

This is fantastic advice. We plan to stay in Sri Lanka for 80 days so we went to the immigrant office on Monday at 2pm just after we arrived in Sri Lanka, but unfortunately they could not process the extension that day. ( A note that although they state they are open until 4pm, they actually stop taking applications at 2pm). We had to leave early the next day to head south and will now have to go back to Colombo to apply. My question is do you know if my wife and daughter have to be present to apply for the visa extensions or can I make the trip back to Colombo myself with their passports and forms? This would save them having to making the trip as well…

Usually They advice everyone to attend the extension process personally. But let us check your case with them and get back to you.

Dear Thilini, Thank you for your message. Yes, This is possible but you need to give them a proper reason for the early extension.

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Hi, I would also like to apply for the extension as soon as I arrive. What would you class as a proper reason? I’m travelling by bicycle so for me returning to the capital from somewhere else on the island would be a lot of time and effort, do you think this would be classed as a valid reason? Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hi Nicki, Thank you for the question. Yes, it is.

The great article was written here This provides a very informative content on the visas

Thank you for taking time to share your valuable feedback!

Super helpful, bookmarked! Since it seems so easy to extend your visa, why is there such a strict requirement to show an outward ticket when you arrive? I am coming to SR in a few days and I don’t know how long for – but I have to buy a plane ticket out which I am not planning to use. Do you know of any way round this problem?

Thank you for the helpful post.

Dear Mike, I feel sorry to hear if you found any inconvenience to arrive. Please let us know your country to give you some tips.

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

I am here on a 30 day tourist visa but I have a flight back to china at the end of the 30 days (Oct-10) my flight coming back to Colombo is not until the (Dec-10) can the extension start when I get back on(Dec-10)?

Also I will be leaving for 8 days (Dec-22-30) for Christmas

What is the most cost effective way to handle this?

Best option would be to come back using a new entry permit rather than extending visa as extension starts immediately after your entry permit (if 30 tourist visa you already have) expires. There is no option to start the extension on the desired day. In your case extension will start Oct 10th and end on Dec 10th as an extension is given for 2 months. So, come back using a new entry permit and extend the new visa accordingly if you wish to stay longer.

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Wow! what a helpful blog… Thank you for your vaulable information as all in one well illustrated guide. Could you please anyone share the price details for extension? My baby son from Germany will stay with his mother for another 2 more months! Thank you

For a German national it will cost 26.8 USD. Please refer to http://www.immigration.gov.lk/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=159&Itemid=203&lang=en#G

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

we only have one day (Monday) to extend visa, flying Monday late night out of colombo. is it feasible to say that a visa extension can be gotten within ONE DAY? Otherwise we have to arrive in Colombo on Thursday to get it on Friday as office is closed on the weekend. thank you. We would waste 5 days just to get this visa early. We cannot get it when we arrive as we have an ayurveda treatment starting right away and will be picked up at airport in the middle of the night.

it depends, but mostly you may get the extension within one day.

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Great guide, thanks. We plan to travel Sri Lanka for 35 days, but only plan to stay in Colombo a few days when we arrive, and then return just before we leave. Do you know if it possible to get the visa extension at the beginning of your stay in Sri Lanka, so we do not have to return to Colombo in the middle of our stay? Thanks

Hi Holger, at the moment It is possible. it could be changed without prior notice. So, we recommend other guest to check if there is new regulation implemented at their time. Hope this helps !!

It is quite a comprehensive article with all the required documents, instructions on the process and map inside the office. 90 day tourist visa sri lanka

I am traveling to SL for a total of 44 days this July and August. I have taken a gander at the visa application process and I think I can enter with the multi day visit visa, and should then extend it. I’ve likewise observed that I can download and print the shape for extending the visa on-line.

Does anybody know where I have to go to process the augmentation? Are there offices that will help with this (for a charge obviously!) and any thought if extending is costly?

You have to visit the immigration and emigration office in Colombo as mentioned in the article above. There can be some individuals who help with the process but not official places. So, we can’t recommend anyone and I think it is not that difficult to get it done yourself if you follow our article above. Please refer to this link for the cost of extending visa

Thank you for your feedback!! it`s a pleasure to hear the guidance is helped

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Great informative article for everyone :). While Sri Lanka offers an approach to get a 30-day Tourist Visa online, getting it extended isn’t as helpful. With a specific end goal to extend your stay in Sri Lanka as a tourist, you should by and by visit the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo and apply for one.

Thank you for taking the time to write a comment. I`m really glad if it could help you !!

Visa: short-term / schengen for stays up to 90 days.

Visits up to 90 days

General information

Recommendations and tips, so called “visa agents”, book your appointment, additional content, related content.

Please first read the Embassy´s page Visa - Important information for all applicants .

For visiting the so-called “Schengen States” for a period up to 90 days, Sri Lankan and Maldivian citizens and certain third country nationals residing in these countries have to obtain a visa category “Schengen”.

They have to lodge an application at the Embassy of the country which is their main destination (generally: the Schengen country with the longest stay during the trip). The country of entry and departure is not the determining factor! Holders of Schengen visas (text on the visa reads “valid for Schengen states” in the language of the issuing country) may spend up to 90 days in a given 180 days period in the Schengen area, provided their visa is valid at the time.

The German Embassy Colombo handles Schengen visa applications from

  • Citizens of Sri Lanka residing in Sri Lanka and other third country nationals residing in Sri Lanka wishing to travel mainly to Germany, Estonia, Hungary and Latvia. Applicants may apply in the VFS German Visa Application Centres in Colombo and Jaffna.
  • Please note: Germany is not representing any other Schengen country in the Maldives. Applicants wishing to travel mainly to another Schengen country have to apply with the respective Embassy in New Delhi.
  • It is recommended to apply as early as possible. The application can be lodged up to 6 months before the planned trip.
  • The standard processing time for the decision on visa applications is 15 calendar days. The application should therefore be submitted at least 15 calendar days before the planned trip. Please refrain from enquiries on the status of your visa application during the processing time. If in individual cases an extended review is carried out, the processing time may be extended to 45 calendar days.
  • Please note that visa applications can only be submitted through one of Germany’s VFS visa application centres in Colombo, Jaffna or Malé / Maldives . VFS acts as the official partner of the Embassy of Germany managing the administrative tasks related to visa. The decision making process about an application is solely handled by the Embassy!
  • For an appointment at the VFS visa application centre in Colombo and Jaffna you have to register on this waiting list You will get a confirmation about your registration and again an email once your appointment is to be scheduled.

For an appointment at the VFS visa application centres in Malé you have to book an appointment via the VFS website. Please consult the VFS website for further information.

  • Applicants are obliged to provide all information necessary to proof their case and therefore are advised to submit only complete applications. Please note that all visa applicants need to appear in person for the collection of biometric data (photograph and ten fingerprints) when applying for a Schengen Visa. For more information, also regarding exceptions, click here Information regarding the Visa Information System (VIS)

There is no need to use an “agent” to apply for a visa.

Please be informed that the German Embassy is not related to “visa agents” in any way. They neither work for nor work with the consent of the German Embassy. There is no such thing as “registered visa agent” for Germany. Their service may be expensive to you, but without any value to your case and certainly in no case will bind the German Embassy in their decision making process.

No “visa agent” can:

  • influence the outcome
  • fast-track the processing period
  • guarantee you a visa

Sri Lanka extends visa free entry to visitors from seven countries

90 day tourist visa sri lanka

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando said that a final decision regarding the matter will be taken during the next few weeks.

The free visa regime was initially implemented for nationals of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan until 31.03.2024.

The pilot program was launched to rebuild the tourism industry in line with the Cabinet of Ministers Approval 23/1885/602/023 dated 24.10.2023.

Accordingly, nationals of the above-nominated countries possessing Diplomatic, Official, Public Affairs, Service, and Ordinary passports are eligible to enjoy a visa-free regime under this scheme.

The above nominated nationalsshould apply for Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka.

The validity period of the free ETA is 30 days and permits double entry from the date of initial arrival to Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Sri Lanka set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Sri Lankan High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Sri Lanka.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Sri Lanka, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

Tourist visas are normally valid for 30 days. If you overstay your visa you could be fined or detained by the police.

You must follow the guidelines for tourists issued by Sri Lanka’s Immigration and Emigration department .

Applying for a visa

You can get and pay for a Sri Lanka ‘Electronic Travel Authorisation’ (ETA) online , a few days before you arrive. You should get your approval notice within 24 hours, and you can use this to enter Sri Lanka.

It is also possible to apply for a 30-day tourist visa on arrival if you land at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. However, the Department for Immigration strongly advises visitors to apply for an ETA before entry to Sri Lanka, as the approval of an arrival visa cannot be guaranteed. An arrival visa costs 60 US dollars, which is 10 US dollars more than the ETA.

You can complete an online arrival form 3 days before arriving in Sri Lanka. The service is free and may save time when you arrive.

If you want to stay for more than 30 days, up to 180 days, you need to apply online as you cannot apply on arrival.

If you want to extend your visa, contact the Immigration and Emigration Department .

You do not need a visa if you’re travelling through Sri Lanka by air, as long as the connecting flight is within 24 hours of your arrival. Check with your airline about transit times.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Sri Lanka’s guide .

Depending on your circumstances, this may include a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Sri Lanka . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into Sri Lanka

Most major banks allow Visa and Mastercard cash withdrawals. There are ATMs in major towns and cities, but not all accept international cards.

You cannot transfer money without an exchange control permit issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka .

A Global Affair | Travel Sri Lanka: A Guide To Visas, Logistics And Must-Visits

Want to enjoy stunning white sand beaches, soothing natural beauty, and wildlife adventures pack your bags for this south asian island country, sri lanka, which lies in the indian ocean..

Sri Lanka Travel Visa Rules For Indian Passport Holders Travel Tips Currency Logistics Weather Places To Visit A Global Affair | Travel Sri Lanka: A Guide To Visas, Logistics And Must-Visits

Are you planning a trip to an island in the Indian Ocean where you can delight in pristine sandy beaches adorned with coconut trees, all set against the backdrop of turquoise seas? Look no further — as Sri Lanka beckons travellers with its captivating blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture, boasting a rich history dating back over 2,500 years.

Formerly known as Ceylon, the nation offers sun, sea, and ultimate seclusion, away from the demands of daily life. Here, you can witness picturesque natural wonders, indulge in thrilling wildlife sanctuary experiences, delve into the religious teachings of Buddha, and embrace tranquillity, all in one place.

Sri Lanka, separated from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait, recently surpassed the Maldives regarding footfall from India. This indicates that Indian tourists are heading to the Island Nation more after the diplomatic row with the Maldives. A Male-based news outlet, Adhadhu, reports that in January 2024, tourist arrivals in the Maldives lagged behind Sri Lanka after 4 years.

So if you are heading to the island nation, let's unravel the essentials for Indian citizens.

Entry Requirements & Visa Procedures :

Sri Lanka is a small country surrounded by the Indian Ocean and has so much to see and do. A Sri Lankan Tourist visa is all you need to enter the country and experience it all. The pilot project, announced last year, offered free visas for the first 30 days of stay until March 31, 2024. However, after March 31st, 2024, the old visa process automatically resumed, where the standard cost for a tourist visa is around Rs. 1700 to grant a 30-day stay in the country with a maximum 2 entries.

Sri Lanka Offers multiple visa categories as mentioned below:

  • Tourist Visa
  • Business Visa
  • Transit Visa
  • Student Visa
  • Residency Visa

The visa process and charges may vary based on the purpose of the visit and visa type. However, transit passengers do not need to pay any fees for their transit visa.

Tourist Visa Application Process:

You should have an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to travel to and stay within the country. ETA can be obtained online via the official website (srilanka.visaonlinegov.org or www.eta.gov.lk.) or at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) upon arrival.

Online Application Procedure:

  • Submit the application online
  • Receive ETA approval via email
  • Take a printout of the approval and present it to immigration officers at the airport
  • Validity upto 30 days from the date of issue
  • Stay Duration: Up to 3 months (extendable up to six months)

Required Documents:

  • ETA application form
  • Two recent passport-size photographs
  • Passports (Must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the arrival date).
  • Confirmed return tickets
  • Proof of accommodation/ /invitation from Sri Lanka
  • Photocopy of the passport's front and last pages
  • Bank statement

Points to be noted:

  • All passengers must fill out Arrival/Departure cards online at www.immigration.gov.lk within 3 days of departure.
  • Visitors not holding return/onward tickets could be refused entry.
  • Processing Time for your online visa is up to four working days
  • The ETA approval certificate must be used within 180 days after issued.

Sri Lanka offers visa exemption for Indian tourists during a specified period, with the possibility of extension.

Travel Logistics:

While Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, the best time to visit the place is from November to April in the southwest and February to September in the northeast part of the country. A short 5-day trip or a leisurely 15-day exploration both can be enjoyable options for visitors.

Colombo, the capital, provides direct flights to major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. A round trip from India to Sri Lanka costs approximately between Rs 16,000 to Rs 90,000 per person, depending on the departure city and class of travel. Flight durations vary, with around 3 hours and 35 minutes from Delhi to Colombo, and approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Bengaluru or Chennai.

Alternatively, travellers can opt for cruise services, with prices ranging from Rs 55,000 to Rs 4,50,000 per person.

Within Sri Lanka, transportation options include taxis, scooters, and bicycles for budget-conscious travellers. Luxury train services by Expo Rail cover major routes, while air taxis operated by Sri Lankan Airlines offer quick connections between popular destinations. The Sri Lanka Transport Board facilitates online bus booking services for both locals and tourists.

Accommodation options range from budget-friendly hostels to luxury resorts. In cities like Colombo and Kandy, a night's stay at a 5-star property can cost Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000, while budget accommodations may range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000 per night. For a 5-day budget trip, costs may total around Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000 per person. Also, remember to exchange your currency at the airport or in big cities; the exchange rate is 1 Sri Lanka Rupee = INR 0.28.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, which means it experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. However, it stays hot and humid all year round. Even during the rainy season, there's usually plenty of sunshine, especially along the coast. The average temperature in Sri Lanka is 25°C throughout the year. Most tourists prefer to visit during winter because the weather remains dry and cool at that time.

Sri Lanka is a multilingual country with several languages spoken across its diverse communities. The official languages of Sri Lanka are Sinhalese and Tamil. However, English is widely spoken in tourist places or big cities.

Experience Rich Cultural Heritage And W ildlife:

Visitors can immerse themselves in the country's heritage by visiting 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Sigiriya rock fortress, the Dambulla Cave Temple, and the sacred cities of Kandy and Anuradhapura.

Sri Lanka's wildlife sanctuaries, like Udawalawe National Park, and Wilpattu National Park offer opportunities to observe elephants and other native species in their natural habitats. You can hike through lush green hills in Ella or enjoy water activities in coastal towns like Bentota. Cities like Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Trincomalee also have plenty of attractions for tourists.

The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura and Sigiriya are for history enthusiasts, while the tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya offer a serene retreat amidst stunning landscapes.

To enjoy breathtaking white sand beaches lined by thick palm tree forests, with clear waters and perfect waves for surfing, visit Mirissa, Unawatuna, Tangalle, Dikwella, and Nilwella. You can also spot scenic waterfalls throughout your jounney like Elle Wala waterfall, near Wellawaya and many more. After all the adventures, if you seek spirituality, you can easily find Buddhist temples there. The Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy is a must-visit.
