How to manage privacy and security settings in Safari on iPhone and iPad

Safari on iPhone 7

Browsing on the internet is something most of us do just about every day, but there is always a slight element of danger, whether it's viruses, identity theft, or getting spoiled for Game of Thrones (DAMN IT).

If you want to have more control over your privacy and security while using Safari on your iPhone or iPad, here's how!

How to prevent cross-site tracking

How to block all cookies in safari, how to request that websites don't track you, how to get warnings about fraudulent websites, how to allow or deny camera and microphone access, how to see if websites have apple pay set up, how to clear your history and website data, how to remove all website data.

Ever been looking at shoes and then shoe ads suddenly pop up on your Facebook feed? That's cross-site tracking and it's a way of monitoring your online behavior to better cater advertising toward you. If you don't like that, then you can turn it off in Safari like this:

  • Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  • Tap Safari . You'll have to scroll down to find it.
  • Tap the switch next to Prevent Cross-Site Tracking . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Prevent Cross-Site Tracking

Cookies are bits of your information that websites store in order to perhaps customize your experience in future or to save login information so that you don't have to constantly input your email address, for example. If you don't want Safari sites to save any of your info, then you can block all cookies like this:

  • Tap the switch next to Block All Cookies . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Block All Cookie

Adding to the above-mentioned cross-site tracking information, you can also get Safari to send requests to websites asking them not to track your behavior. This is added padding in cross-site tracking prevention.

  • Tap the switch next to Ask Websites Not To Track Me . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Ask Websites Not To Track Me

Safari can detect when websites are suspicious or may appear fraudulent, and if you enable the setting, you can get a warning before visiting those sites. You can also just hit "Ignore" if you know the site is legit.

  • Tap the switch next to Fraudulent Website Warning . It's down under Privacy & Security . Green is on.

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Fraudulent Website Warning

Some websites may want access to your camera and microphone — sites like Facebook — and Safari would therefore need that access. You can completely deny it like this:

  • Tap the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Camera & Microphone Access

Safari can automatically check to see if the site you're visiting supports Apple Pay. Here's how to enable it:

  • Tap the switch next to Check for Apple Pay . It's down under Privacy & Security .

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap the switch next to Check for Apple Pay

If you've been looking up J-Law's nudes or scheming on Xmas gifts for the wife and she also uses your phone, you can clear your Safari browsing history, which will also clear out your browsing data like cookies, login information, and more.

  • Tap Clear History and Website Data .
  • Tap Clear History and Data in the pop-up.

Tap Safari, tap Clear History and Website Data, tap Clear History and Data

If you want to keep your browsing history but want to remove your data from Safari, you can just delete website data, which will remove cookies, login details, and more.

  • Tap Advanced at the bottom of the page.

Launch Settings, tap Safari, tap Advanced

  • Tap Website Data .
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap Remove All Website Data .
  • Tap Remove Now .

Tap Website Data, tap Remove All Website Data, tap Remove Now

How to Access Website Settings in Safari for iOS

ios7 safari icon

Like Safari on Mac, the Website Settings section allows you to configure different viewing and security options for specific websites, and Safari then applies them automatically so you don't have to bother with them again. Here's where you can find it.

  • Navigate to a site you frequently visit.
  • Tap the "aA" icon in the top-left corner of the screen to reveal the Website View menu.
  • Tap Website Settings .

Request Desktop Website: Mobile-friendly websites are often stripped down and streamlined for easier navigation, with the result that some full-page content isn't displayed at all. Even when it is, finding that content can sometimes be a chore, especially if you're used to the desktop version of a site. Fortunately, Apple has had the foresight to let you bypass mobile versions of websites and view original desktop versions on its mobile devices instead.

Camera, Microphone, Location: The last three options in Website Settings let you choose whether to allow or deny the site access to your iOS device's camera and microphone, and whether to enable location detection. You can opt to "Allow" or "Deny", but if your preference is likely to change from time to time for these, set them to "Ask", and Safari will query you whenever access is requested by the site.

Safari: A Beginner’s Guide for iPhone or iPad Users

Safari can be intimidating to learn when you first start using it, but this guide will help you get used to it.

On Apple devices, the default web browser is called Safari. It shares a lot of similar features to other common browsers, like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. But if you’re new to using Safari, you may feel a little lost because the interface is slightly different to the others.

So, here’s a beginner’s guide on how to use the Safari app to browse the web on your iPhone or iPad.

How to Search for Content in the Safari App

As with all web browsers, you’ll need to first enable your iPhone’s mobile data or connect to a Wi-Fi network to access the internet.

Then, to search in Safari, simply type a term, phrase, or URL into the Smart Search bar at the bottom of the screen and tap Go on your keyboard. The Smart Search bar is a combination of the address bar and search bar. As you type, you’ll see search suggestions based on your keyword as well as results from your bookmarks and browsing history.

How to Navigate a Webpage in Safari

Once you obtain your search results, you tap on a link you’re interested in. Now let’s look at how you can navigate the webpage once it’s loaded.

How to Jump Back to the Top of Webpage

After swiping to scroll down a long article, you may want to go back up to access the website’s menu. To instantly jump back to the top of the webpage, just tap the topmost edge of your screen.

How to Go Backward (or Forward) a Webpage

After tapping on a link, perhaps the webpage isn’t quite something you’re looking for. To go back to your search results, swipe from left to right from the edge of your screen.

To go forward on a webpage, swipe from right to left instead.

How to Reveal the Safari Address Bar

Your Safari address bar is automatically hidden away when you’re scrolling down a webpage. To bring it back, tap the bottom edge of the screen that shows the website’s main URL.

How to Work With Multiple Tabs in the Safari App

Having multiple tabs opened in Safari can help you to compare information between webpages and search for new content without having to close your current webpage. Here’s how to work with multiple tabs in Safari on your iPhone or iPad.

How to Open a New Tab

To open a new tab, select the Tabs icon in the bottom-right corner, which looks like two overlapping squares. Then tap the Plus (+) to open a new tab.

How to Switch Between Tabs

Again, hit the Tabs icon. You’ll see a gallery of all your opened tabs in Safari. Select a tab to visit the webpage you want.

Since the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a new feature in Safari: tab groups. Many of us are probably guilty of having way too many opened tabs. Therefore, organizing tabs into groups makes them more manageable. Learn more about how to use tab groups in Safari on your iPhone .

How to Open a Link in a New Background Tab

When you read long articles, you’ll likely come across a link or two within the content that sparks your interest. To avoid disrupting your reading process, you can make Safari open the link in the background, in a new tab. To do so:

  • Go to the Settings app.
  • Select Safari .
  • Scroll down and tap Open Links .
  • Choose In Background .

Next time you want to open a link, long-press it. Then, select Open in Background . When you want to visit that link, select Tabs to view all your opened tabs and choose the loaded webpage.

Saving and Sharing Webpages in Safari

The internet gives you access to a whole new world of information. Save a webpage to refer to it later, or share it with your family and friends.

How to Bookmark a Safari Webpage

To bookmark a webpage to read later, tap the Share icon in the middle of the bottom of the screen (it looks like an arrow coming out of a square) and select Add Bookmark . Type in a bookmark name.

To access your bookmarked webpage later, tap the Bookmark icon (an opened book) and browse through your bookmarks, reading list, and history to find what you’re looking for.

Besides the bookmark option, you’ll also notice that you can add a webpage to your favorites or reading list. Marking a webpage as a favorite will make it show up on your Safari home page. It’s useful if you visit the website often.

To learn more about reading lists, you can visit our guide on the differences between a bookmark and a reading list .

How to Share a Link From the Safari App

Stumble upon an interesting DIY project? A promising recipe you’d like to share with your family? You don’t have to bookmark and remind yourself to show the webpage to them later. You can share the link directly from the Safari app.

Tap the Share icon. You can then select the receiver’s name from the horizontal list of recent contacts, or choose your preferred communication app to send the Safari link to them.

Erasing Your Digital Footprint in Safari

If you’re an aspiring crime writer, having a friend notice your crime-filled search history when they peer over your shoulder is inevitably awkward. Hence, there are some things we’d prefer to keep private and erase all traces of once we exit a web browser.

Safari has a few features to help you with this.

How to Close a Tab

If you don’t close your tabs, old webpages will just auto-load again the moment you head into Safari. Having too many opened tabs affects your browsing speed as well.

Closing a tab is simple. You just need to tap the Tabs icon and then tap the Close (x) button in the corner of the tab.

How to Browse Privately in Safari

Similar to Google Chrome’s Incognito Mode, Safari has a feature called Private Browsing Mode. Your autofill information and browser history won’t be saved when you use this function. Here’s how to use it:

  • First, tap the Tabs icon.
  • Select the center Tabs button with an arrow next to it.
  • Choose Private .
  • To open a new private tab, tap the Plus (+) button.

Whenever you’re in doubt about whether you’re in Private Browsing Mode, just check the Smart Search Bar. It will be dark grey instead of white when you’re browsing privately.

How to Clear Your Safari Browsing History

If you forgot to use Private Browsing while searching for confidential information, don’t worry. You can still clear your history in Safari. Just follow these steps:

  • Tap the Bookmarks icon.
  • Select History (the clock icon).
  • Tap Clear .
  • Choose the time length from which you want Safari to clear your history.

Use the Safari App to Surf the Internet on Your iPhone

The Safari app has all the features you need for a seamless browsing experience. Once you’re familiar with these basic functions, you can check out and download Safari extensions from the App Store to enjoy more helpful features while surfing the internet on your iPhone or iPad.

Where Are Safari Preferences On iPad?

If you’re an iPad user, you’re probably familiar with Safari – the web browser that comes pre-installed on your device. But did you know that Safari comes with its own set of preferences and settings? These settings allow you to customize your browsing experience, from blocking certain types of content to enabling reader mode for easier reading. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at where to find these preferences on your iPad and how to customize them for a more tailored experience.

First off, the Safari Preferences menu can be accessed by opening the Safari app and clicking the “Safari” tab in the top menu bar (Fig. 1). From there, click “Preferences” to open up the settings page. On this page, you can customize a variety of different settings – from setting a homepage to disabling pop-ups and allowing JavaScript.

Once you’ve made all your desired changes, click “Done” at the bottom of the page and they will be applied immediately.

You can also access Safari preferences through the Settings app on your iPad. To do this, open Settings and scroll down until you see “Safari” listed in the list of apps (Fig. 2). Tap it and then tap “Websites” to view all available website-related settings. From here, you can enable or disable content blockers (such as ad-blockers or parental control filters) as well as set whether websites should ask for permission before tracking your location or using cookies.

Finally, if you want an even more tailored web browsing experience, there are options available within each website itself. For example, if you want Reader Mode enabled for a particular website, all you need to do is open that website in Safari, tap on the address bar at the top of the page (Fig 1), and select “Reader Mode” from the dropdown menu (Fig 3). Reader Mode will then be enabled for that particular website only – so if you don’t want it enabled for all sites in general then this is a great way to do it without changing any global settings!

Overall, Safari Preferences on iPad offer plenty of options for customizing your web browsing experience – from blocking certain types of content to enabling reader mode or setting permissions for individual websites. Whether it’s setting a homepage or enabling content blockers – there’s something here for everyone!

Where Are Safari Preferences On iPad? 1

Finding Safari Preferences on an iPad

To find the Safari preferences on your iPad, open the Safari app and click on the Menu bar (located at the top of the screen) > Safari > Preferences… This will bring up a window that contains all of the settings for Safari on your device. From here, you can adjust settings such as your home page, search engine, security and privacy, extensions, and more.

Opening Safari Preferences

To open Safari Preferences, first open Safari. Then, from the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Safari > Preferences. Here you will find all of the settings for your web browsing experience in Safari. From this window, you can adjust your homepage, set preferences for security and privacy, choose which extensions and plugins to use, manage website data and certificates, customize your search engine settings, and more.

Accessing Safari Website Preferences

The Safari website preferences can be found by going to Safari > Settings and then clicking on Websites. Here you will find a list of settings that you can customize, such as Reader and Content Blockers, on the left side of the window. To apply a setting to a website on the right, simply select the setting and choose the option you want from the pop-up menu next to the website.

Changing Browser Preferences on iPad

On your iPad, open the Settings app and select Safari from the list of apps. From the Safari settings page, you can manage various browser preferences, including: • Search Engine: Choose which search engine to use for searches from the Safari address bar. • Block Pop-ups and Fraudulent Website Warning: Enable this setting to block pop-up windows and receive warnings about potential fraudulent websites. • Privacy & Security: Manage website tracking and cookies, as well as enable fraud warnings and JavaScript. • Advanced: Set custom appearance options, such as font size, page zoom level, and more. You can also enable Reader Mode here. Once you have selected your desired preferences, tap Done in the top right corner of the screen to save your changes.

Selecting Preferences in Safari Menu

To select preferences in the Safari menu, open the Safari app on your Mac and choose Safari > Settings. You’ll see a list of settings panes, each with its own set of preferences. For example, in the General pane, you can change your homepage and choose what to see when a new window or tab is opened, how long to keep your browsing history, which bookmarks to show in the Favorites view, and where downloads should be saved and how long to keep them. Select the settings pane you want to use and adjust the preferences accordingly.

Accessing Safari Password Preferences

The Safari password preferences can be found in the Settings (or Preferences) menu of the Safari browser. To access them, open Safari, and from the menu bar, click on Settings (or Preferences), then click on Passwords. This will open the Safari password preferences where you can view, add, or delete saved passwords.

In conclusion, Safari Preferences on iPad gives users the ability to customize their browsing experience. Users can manage their settings for Reader, Content Blockers, and other settings for each website they visit. This allows users to stay secure and enjoy a tailored browsing experience that meets their individual needs. With the customization options available in Safari Preferences, iPad users can ensure their web browsing is both safe and enjoyable.

Tell websites to stop tracking you

Change your search engine to duckduckgo.

  • Hide your IP address

Stop using location services

Disable autofill, clear your browsing history, block your cookies, 7 settings you should change in safari to enhance your privacy.

  • If you use Safari on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, you can enable settings to enhance your privacy while web browsing.
  • You can easily disable cookies, change your search engine to DuckDuckGo, hide your IP address, and more.
  • Here are seven of the top ways to make your online activity more private.

While Apple has allowed alternative browsers on the iPhone and iPad for quite some time, odds are good that if you have one of those devices (or a Mac computer, of course) you frequently use Safari to browse the web. It's relatively safe and private, but you can do much better by tweaking a few settings. Here are seven Safari settings that'll enhance your privacy when you're online.

Almost every step you take online is tracked by websites to target you for ads and to customize your experience. But you can shut most of that down by telling Safari to stop tracking you. On your iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Privacy & Security section, enable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking by swiping the button to the right.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Privacy tab and then click the checkbox for Prevent Cross-Site Tracking .

Google is most people's default, but that search engine fundamentally lacks privacy. If you don't want a large corporation to know your browsing history, switch to DuckDuckGo. On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Search section, tap Search Engine and choose DuckDuckGo from the options.

If you're using a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Search tab. Finally, to the right of Search Engine , click the dropdown menu and switch from Google to DuckDuckGo .

Hide your IP address

By default, websites can see your IP address, which can reveal personal details about you including your location. If you prefer, you can hide this from online trackers. On your iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Privacy & Security section, tap Hide IP Address and choose From Trackers .

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Privacy tab and then click the checkbox for Hide IP address from trackers .

A lot of your mobile device's secret sauce is based on location services — your iPhone and iPad need to know where you are to make smart suggestions and offer location-based features. But if you don't want Safari to know where you are, it's easy to turn off. On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Settings for Websites section, tap Location and change the setting to Deny (or, if you want to be asked every time, choose Ask ).

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Websites tab. Choose Location in the pane on the left. At the bottom of the window, configure When visiting other sites by clicking the dropdown menu and choosing Ask or Deny .

Autofill is a great feature if you don't like to enter basic personal information into web forms over and over again, but for that to work, Safari has to record private data. Don't want that? On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the General section, tap Autofill and turn off Use Contact Info and Credit Cards by swiping the buttons to the left.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the AutoFill tab. You can disable autofill data in four categories by clearing the checkboxes.

This one is the traditional, go-to way to enhance your privacy — you can clear your browsing history from time to time to erase records on your device about where you've been online, along with your saved website passwords. On an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . Then scroll down and tap Clear History and Website Data . Conform you want to do that in the popup window.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click History in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Clear History in the dropdown menu, choose the timeframe you want from the dropdown menu, and click Clear History .

If you prevent cross-site tracking (see the earlier tip in this article), Safari prevents some third-party cookies. But you can disable all cookies if you want to amp up your privacy — just be aware that your online experience will be less convenient, and some sites won't work properly. To try it on an iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and then tap Safari . In the Privacy & Security section, enable Block All Cookies by swiping the button to the right.

On a Mac, start Safari and then click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click Preferences in the dropdown menu. In the Preferences window, click the Privacy tab. Beside Cookies and website data , click the checkbox for Block all cookies .

How to customize and share website settings in Safari on iPhone

access safari settings on ipad

Apple already implemented some enhanced website settings on the Safari browser a while ago. With the new iOS 16, Apple offers an option to share Safari settings across your devices. I will take you through each feature and help you access, edit, manage, and share website setting in Safari, so let’s get going.

How to access website settings in Safari

  • What are the different website settings on iPhone?
  • How to change Safari settings for a specific website on iPhone
  • How to share Website settings in iOS 16
  • Open iPhone Settings and tap Safari .

How to access website settings in Safari in iOS 16

What Safari settings can you change on the iPhone?

  • Page Zoom : If you have difficulty seeing standard webpage text and images, you can set the zoom level for all the websites.  Note: If you had individually set the zoom for a page, it would be listed here. You may tap Edit to clear that and set a page zoom level for all websites you visit.
  • Request Desktop Website : This lets you access the computer version of a website. You may have to pinch out with two fingers to see the content.  Note: Several websites do not let you access the desktop version even if you use this feature.
  • Reader : Websites are full of ads and distractions like email popups, offer banners, and more. Reader Mode removes all these and lets you focus on the meaningful text and images on a website. From here, you can enable it for all websites.
  • Camera , Microphone , Location : From here, you can allow, deny, or force all websites to ask your permission before accessing the iPhone camera, microphone, or your current location.

You can either customize the Safari settings from iPhone Settings or do it directly from Safari.

How to change Safari settings for each website on iPhone

Many times, there have been cases where not all sites require all the settings to be changed. If you want to give some extra privilege to your favorite site, follow these simple steps:

  • Launch the Safari app and visit the website.
  • Tap Website Settings .

Change Safari settings for specific website on iPhone

Notably, this will set the default for the active website. If you want to change or set the default page zoom for the current website, tap the ‘A’ from the bottom of the options menu.

Adjusting Safari settings to enhance your online privacy

In this guide you'll learn how to configure your Safari browser settings to enhance your online privacy.

Disclaimer : With macOS Big Sur, Apple enriched the support for browser add-ons, which are now available at the App Store. Although the ecosystem for privacy tools is still sparse, we might update this guide in the future.

To access the settings menu, open the Safari app and on the menubar click on Safari > Preferences... (Fig. 1).

Fig. 1: Safari preferences

Safari includes several features, such as displaying search suggestions, meant to improve your browsing experience that require you to share data with third-parties. You can disable these options by going to the Search pane, and disabling Include search engine suggestions , Include Safari sugestions , and Preload Top Hit in the background .

Fig. 2: Search settings

To prevent websites from tracking you, go to the Privacy pane and enable Prevent cross-site tracking . You can also block all cookies to prevent tracking, but beware that this can interfere with your web browsing experience.

Those instructions apply to Safari on a Mac only. They are not for iPad and will not work on an iPad.

To get to Safari Settings on an iPad, you open the Settings App, and scroll down to "Safari". Scroll down to Advanced, then on Website Data. However on iPad there is no option to delete data from a specific data. It's all or nothing.

See here for iPad specific suggestions: https://macreports.com/safari-cannot-open-the-page-because-too-many-redirects-occurred/

  • The Ultimate Guide to Parental Controls

What to Know

  • On iPhone/iPad, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps > Content Restrictions > Web Content .
  • To disable Safari completely, under Allowed Apps , toggle Safari to off .
  • On Mac, go to Apple logo > System Preferences > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > Turn On .

This article explains how to use Safari parental controls. Instructions apply to iPhones and iPod touches running iOS 12 and up, iPads running iPadOS 12 and up, and macOS Catalina (10.15) and higher.

How to Use Safari Parental Controls on iPhone

The Parental Controls available for Safari on iPhone are part of Screen Time . Screen Time does more than control Safari; it also helps you set limits of device use. To use it to control Safari on iPhones and iPod touches, follow these steps:

Make sure to apply these settings on the devices used by your kids, not your own. The only exception is if you use Family Sharing on the Mac. In that case, you can use your own Mac and apply the settings for each kid.

Tap Settings .

Tap Screen Time .

Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions .

Toggle the Content & Privacy Restrictions slider to on/green .

If prompted, enter the Screen Time passcode for this device.

Tap Allowed Apps . To disable Safari completely and prevent web browsing on this device, toggle the Safari slider to off/white .

Tap Content Restrictions .

Tap Web Content .

  • To prevent access to Apple's list of adult websites on this phone, tap Limit Adult Websites . To add sites that are either always allowed or never allowed, tap Add Website , then add the address of the site.
  • To limit this device to only browsing a set of pre-defined websites, tap Allowed Websites Only . To add additional websites to this list, tap Add Website , then add the address of the site. To remove sites from the list, swipe right to left, then tap Delete .

You may also prefer to block websites on the iPhone or just block ads in Safari . Both of those options are good, and follow slightly different steps than shown here, but only blocking ads may not provide all the censorship you need for children.

How to Use Safari Parental Controls on iPad

Because the iPhone and iPad use a very similar operating system, the Safari Parental Controls on iPad are basically the same as on iPhone. Both are part of Screen Time.

Tap Allowed Apps . To disable Safari completely and prevent web browsing on this iPad, toggle the Safari slider to off/white .

Tap Content Restrictions , then tap Web Content .

In the Web Content section you can set permissions as you like:

  • To prevent access to Apple's list of adult websites on this iPad, tap Limit Adult Websites . To add sites that are either always allowed or never allowed, tap Add Website , then add the address of the site.
  • To limit this device to only browsing to a set of pre-defined websites, tap Allowed Websites Only . To add additional websites to this list, tap Add Website , then add the address of the site. To remove sites from the list, swipe right to left, then tap Delete .

How to Use Safari Parental Controls on Mac

The Mac uses Screen Time to give parents control over Safari, too, but the way you access Screen Time is very different.

Mac computers also have parental controls and Screen Time settings you can dig deeper into to limit access from one of those devices.

Click the Apple logo > System Preferences > Screen Time .

Remember, if you use Family Sharing, click the name of your kid whose settings you want to change. You'll find all of your kids in a menu in the left-hand sidebar.

Click Content & Privacy .

In the top right corner, click Turn On .

To configure Safari Parental Controls, click Content , then choose one of the following:

  • Unrestricted Access : Click this to allow your child to access any site on the web.
  • Limit Adult Websites : Want to block websites that Apple has listed as adult? Choose this option. You can also add your own sites here.
  • Allowed Websites Only : Create a set of websites that are the only ones your kids can visit by adding their addresses to this list.

This capability can prove invaluable when you need to reference a past visit or re-engage with content you encountered during your browsing sessions.

Viewing and Managing Safari History

Upon accessing your Safari browsing history on your iPad, you gain the ability to not only view but also manage the websites and pages you've visited. This feature provides a comprehensive overview of your browsing habits and empowers you to maintain a tidy and organized browsing history. Let's explore the various aspects of viewing and managing your Safari history on your iPad.

Viewing Safari History

When you navigate to your Safari history, you are presented with a chronological list of websites and pages you've visited during previous browsing sessions. Each entry typically includes the website's title and the date and time of your visit, offering a clear and concise overview of your browsing activity. This chronological arrangement allows you to easily identify and select the desired page, facilitating seamless navigation through your browsing history.

Managing Safari History

In addition to viewing your browsing history, Safari on iPad also provides options to manage your history effectively. You can take proactive steps to organize and streamline your browsing history, ensuring that it remains relevant and accessible. Here are some key aspects of managing your Safari history:

Deleting Individual History Entries

If there are specific websites or pages in your browsing history that you no longer wish to retain, Safari enables you to delete individual history entries. By swiping left on a specific entry in your browsing history, you can reveal the "Delete" option, allowing you to remove the selected website from your history. This feature empowers you to declutter your browsing history and maintain a focused record of visited websites.

Clearing Entire Browsing History

For a more comprehensive approach to managing your Safari history, you have the option to clear your entire browsing history. This action effectively removes all recorded browsing activity, providing a clean slate for your future browsing sessions. By accessing the "Clear" option within the browsing history menu, you can initiate the process of clearing your entire history, ensuring that your browsing trail remains private and uncluttered.

Searching Within History

To streamline the process of locating specific websites or pages within your browsing history, Safari offers a search functionality. This feature allows you to enter keywords or website titles, prompting Safari to filter your browsing history and present relevant entries. By leveraging the search capability, you can swiftly locate and revisit specific websites from your browsing history, enhancing the efficiency of your browsing experience.

To clear your entire Safari browsing history on your iPad, follow these steps:

Open Safari Settings : Begin by launching the "Settings" app on your iPad. This can be done by tapping the "Settings" icon on your home screen, providing access to a wide range of device settings and configurations.

Navigate to Safari Settings : Within the "Settings" app, scroll down and locate the "Safari" option. Tapping on "Safari" will open a dedicated settings menu for the Safari browser, offering various customization and management options.

Access Clear History Option : Within the Safari settings menu, scroll down to find the "Clear History and Website Data" option. This feature allows you to initiate the process of clearing your entire browsing history and website data from the Safari browser on your iPad.

Confirm Clearing History : Upon selecting the "Clear History and Website Data" option, a confirmation prompt will appear, asking if you want to proceed with clearing your browsing history. Confirm the action by tapping "Clear History and Data," initiating the process of clearing your entire Safari history.

By following these steps, you can effectively clear your entire Safari browsing history on your iPad, ensuring that your browsing trail remains private and uncluttered. This proactive approach can be particularly beneficial if you share your iPad with others or simply wish to maintain a clean record of your browsing activities.

In addition to clearing your entire browsing history, Safari on iPad also offers the flexibility to selectively remove individual history entries. By swiping left on a specific entry within your browsing history, you can reveal the "Delete" option, allowing you to remove individual websites or pages from your history. This granular approach to managing your browsing history empowers you to maintain a focused and relevant record of visited websites, ensuring that your browsing history aligns with your preferences and privacy considerations.

Here’s how to find your System Report in macOS Sonoma

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Like macOS Ventura, Sonoma  comes with System Settings as the replacement for System Preferences. With that, the Mac System Report isn’t where it used to be. Here’s how to find it to get all the fine details of your Mac.

A big UI change that first arrived with Ventura and continues with macOS Sonoma is the shift of System Preferences to System Settings. The update ditched the tiled UI and uses a sidebar list design like iPadOS.

In the past, clicking  in the top left corner of a Mac offered fast access to System Report. However, with Sonoma and Ventura, it’s found two levels deeper in System Settings.

And as it happens, Siri is not able to open System Report.

System Report is useful in many ways as it shows you specs for your Mac’s hardware including battery, I/O, software, and network details.

Mac System Report in macOS Sonoma

  • In your Mac’s top left corner, choose  >  About This Mac
  • Click  More Info
  • Scroll to the bottom of the System Settings window that appeared
  • Now click  System Report

Option 2 to find Mac System Report

  • Open  System Settings  on your Mac
  • Pick  General  from the left sidebar, then click  About
  • At the very bottom choose  System Report  (scroll down if needed)

Interestingly, if you search for System Report with Spotlight, you’ll be taken to the About screen of System Settings where you’ll need to head to the bottom and manually click System Report.

New apple iphone privacy warning issued by researchers.

Apple’s iPhone is known for its privacy credentials. “Privacy. That’s Apple,” reads one of the iPhone maker’s advertising slogans.

It may therefore come as a surprise that privacy researchers have issued a new warning, after finding the iPhone is not as private as it seems. According to researchers at Finland’s Aalto University , keeping your iPhone, MacBook and iPad personal data hidden from Apple is “virtually impossible.”

Despite Apple’s privacy focus, your iPhone might not be as private as you think, according to a new ... [+] warning from researchers.

While everyone knows about the risks posed by third party apps—and Apple offers its App Tracking Transparency features to counter this—the data collected by the iPhone maker’s own apps is a problem, the Finnish researchers say.

These are Apple’s own apps that come pre-loaded. They are “pretty much unavoidable on a new device, be it a computer, tablet or mobile phone,” the researchers said in a statement .

The Apple Apps Studied By The Privacy Researchers

The researchers studied eight apps available on iPhones , iPads and Macs: Safari, Siri, Family Sharing, iMessage, FaceTime, Location Services, Find My and Touch ID. First, they collected all publicly available privacy-related information on these apps , including technical documentation and privacy policies and user manuals.

Why You Should Stop Sending Texts From Your iMessage App

Apple ipad pro 2024 release date latest news on when it will launch, paris 2024 olympics morocco miss out on historic qualification zambia qualifies.

The apps chosen “are an integral part of the platform and ecosystem” that are “glued to the platform”—and “getting rid of them is virtually impossible,” associate professor Janne Lindqvist, head of the computer science department at Aalto said.

The researchers said they were surprised “by the fragility” of Apple’s privacy protections. Making things worse, the user interface is designed to be confusing for Apple users, the researchers said.

For example, the user is given the option to enable Siri, but “enabling” only refers to whether you use Siri's voice control. “Siri collects data in the background from other apps you use, regardless of your choice, unless you understand how to go into the settings and specifically change that,” said Lindqvist.

In fact, you can’t easily stop data sharing in any of the iPhone apps studied, according to the researchers. “In practice, protecting privacy on an Apple device requires persistent and expert clicking on each app individually. Apple's help falls short.”

Amel Bourdoucen, a doctoral researcher at Aalto, calls Apple’s online instructions for restricting data access “complex and confusing,” pointing out that the steps required are “scattered in different places.”

Where The Data Collected By Apple Goes

While it’s only one study, the findings of the research are certainly a concern and as the researchers ask, what does Apple do with all that data?

While they caveat that it’s impossible to know for sure, Lindqvist suggests the data will be used to “train the artificial intelligence system behind Siri and to provide personalised user experiences, among other things.”

Apple has not confirmed or denied this. I have contacted the iPhone maker for a comment and will update this article if the firm responds.

What To Do Now About iPhone Privacy

The privacy versus functionality issue is an age-old problem. Of course you want your iPhone to work effectively and integrate with the rest of the Apple ecosystem. Why else would you only buy Apple devices?

But the researchers think Apple could inform users much more clearly than it does today. They also say you can solve the issue of Apple’s data collection by opting for third party apps that are easy to manage, such as Firefox rather than Safari.

The research does raise interesting points, but it’s important to note firstly that it doesn’t cover Google’s Android at all, which I expect is much worse when compared to Apple.

At the same time, while the researchers found limiting data collection was difficult, Apple has introduced numerous privacy settings and controls that make the iPhone a device worth having.

You can quite easily go through your iPhone Settings and ensure you lock down everything that you can. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security and work your way down the list to restrict permissions for third party and Apple apps—ensuring you aren’t sharing analytics with the iPhone maker. Even doing this is a good start.
