Surprisingly or not, the facelifted BMW X3 and X4 models – unveiled late last year – were not available with the latest Active Cruise Control features from the get go. That will change this April, when the latest version of the Stop & Go function will be available on the SUV and Sports Activity Coupe. The Active Cruise Control function is one of the most useful features you can get in a BMW, especially for longer highway trips. That’s because it has some interesting functions on top of what Adaptive Cruise Control is offering. Unlike the already standard cruise control with braking function, it not only keeps the desired speed between 30 and 160 km/h constant (20 to 100 mph), but also the distance to vehicles ahead, which can be selected by the driver in four stages.

Distance control is carried out by means of a radar sensor integrated into the front bumper which, if necessary, makes the vehicle decelerate to a standstill. The range of functions also includes automatic restarting after short intermediate stops of up to three seconds. In addition, the system offers the driver the option of adopting speed limits registered by the Systems Speed Limit Info traffic sign recognition system as the new desired speed at the touch of a button.

That’s all part of the usual Spring model upgrades BMW usually offers on its cars. Every Spring and Fall, the Bavarian brand offers a bump for its models, including new tech, new optional features and sometimes new paint hues or materials used for the cabin. For the BMW X3 and X4 models, which are rather new on the scene, few things have been left out of the bag when they were unveiled. Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function was one of them apparently, but that’s all getting sorted out in April.

Activation instructions:.

• Once you’ve logged in, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store will automatically list all the available digital services for your BMW.
• Add Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go to your shopping basket. Enter your payment details and confirm your purchase. When you’ve finished, you’ll receive confirmation via email.
• The next time you drive your vehicle for 15 minutes or more, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go will be ready for activation in your BMW. You’ll need a stable internet connection with adequate reception.
• If Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go is ready at the end of your drive, you'll see a message on the display of your BMW prompting you to activate it. Confirming this prompt will launch activation.
• Have you still not received a message after three days despite making longer trips, or did the activation fail? Then get in touch with BMW ConnectedDrive Customer Support right away.

BMW X5: Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function ACC

Using the Cruise Control, a desired speed and a distance to a vehicle ahead can be adjusted using the buttons on the steering wheel.

General information

The system maintains the set speed on clear roads. The vehicle accelerates or brakes automatically.

If a vehicle is driving ahead of you, the system adjusts the speed of your vehicle so that the set distance to the vehicle ahead is maintained. The speed is adjusted as far as the given situation allows.

The distance can be adjusted in several steps.

For safety reasons, it depends on the respective speed.

If the vehicle ahead of you brakes to a halt, and then proceeds to drive again within a brief period, the system is able to detect this within the given system limits.

Depending on the vehicle setting, the cruise control settings may change under certain conditions.

For instance, acceleration can change depending on the driving mode.

Safety information

The system cannot serve as a substitute for the driver's personal judgment in assessing the traffic situation. Based on the limits of the system, it cannot independently react to all traffic situations. There is a risk of accident. Adjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic closely and actively intervene where appropriate.

An unsecured vehicle can begin to move and possibly roll away. There is a risk of accident.

Before exiting, secure the vehicle against rolling.

In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, follow the following:

• Set the parking brake.
• On uphill grades or on a downhill slope, turn the front wheels in the direction of the curb.
• On uphill grades or on a downhill slope, also secure the vehicle, for instance with a wheel chock.

The set speed can be incorrectly adjusted or called up by mistake. There is a risk of accident.

Adjust the set speed to the traffic conditions.

Watch traffic closely and actively intervene where appropriate.

Risk of accident due to too high speed differences to other vehicles, for instance in the following situations:

• When fast approaching a slowly moving vehicle.
• Vehicle suddenly swerving into own lane.
• When fast approaching standing vehicles.

There is a risk of injury or danger to life. Watch traffic closely and actively intervene where appropriate.

Buttons on the steering wheel

Speed Limit Assistant: accept suggested speed manually.

Continue cruise control with the last setting.

Switch distance control on/off.

The system is controlled by the following sensors:

• Cameras behind the windshield.
• Front radar sensor.

Additional information: Sensors of the vehicle.

Application range

The system is best used on well-constructed roads.

The minimum speed that can be set is 20 mph/30 km/h.

The maximum speed that can be set is limited and, e.g., depends on the vehicle and the vehicle equipment.

The system can also be activated when stationary.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function - or ACC Stop&Go for short - not only maintains the desired distance to the vehicle in front, in heavy traffic it also slows the car to a standstill. Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function is a further development of the familiar Active Cruise Control (ACC) system. At speeds between 30 and 180 km/h (19 - 112 mph), it enables drivers to cruise along comfortably in free-flowing traffic on motorways or country roads at their preselected speed and while maintaining their desired distance to the vehicle in front. If traffic conditions demand, the system also adjusts the car's distance automatically to the vehicle ahead of it.

ACC Stop&Go likewise relieves the workload on the driver of the new BMW 3-Series Sedan in slow-moving traffic and tailbacks. In stop-start conditions the car is braked to a standstill, if required, and pulls away again automatically. This allows the driver to move comfortably with the flow of the traffic and delegate the job of creeping, stopping and moving off to the car. If the car has been at a standstill for a longer period of time (more than three seconds), the driver has to give the command for the car to automatically pull away again by nudging the accelerator or pressing the "Resume" button on the multifunction steering wheel. The driver can adjust the car's speed at any time while the system is activated by pressing the accelerator or brake pedal, and so retains ultimate responsibility for the car at all times.

The maximum deceleration applied by Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function at low speeds is 4 m/s2 (13 ft/s2). At higher speeds, it is limited to a comfortable 2.5 m/s2 (8 ft/s2). If the driver needs to intervene because the vehicle in front is braking extremely heavily, he is prompted to do so by visual and acoustic signals. At the same time, the deployment thresholds of the Brake Assistant are lowered and the Brake Standby function of the DSC system is activated.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function works using a latest-generation radar sensor. The "full-range" radar can detect vehicles travelling up to 200 metres (656 ft.) in front of the car in virtually any weather conditions. This innovative sensor is integrated discreetly into the front apron of the car and needs no individual adjustment. The system's measuring beam is sufficiently broad at distances up to some 60 metres (approx. 200 ft.) from the car that vehicles in the adjacent lanes can be detected by the radar sensors - within certain limits - earlier than with the conventional ACC system. If another vehicle moves into the same lane as the driver's car, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function adapts the speed of the BMW 3-Series precisely to that of the vehicle moving over.

After a few motorway journeys in heavy traffic, I am thinking of paying for the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go download. Can anyone tell me if it works as well as BMW suggest and what you think of it. thanks.

Yep... about the only downside is it stays a safe distance behind, guaranteeing that aggressive drivers will pull between you and the car in front of you.

Yes, it's worth it and works well, especially with Traffic Jam Assistant aka Driving Assistant Plus (I assume that's called Stop & Go in the UK?). I don't find the minimum following distance too annoying and because I don't fully trust the system, having that extra cushion to react to something is meaningful to me. I feel like maintaining a min. distance with the objective of boxing someone out of a lane change is a bit too aggressive for my taste. If they still insist and cutover anyway, you have less space and time to react. I hope the engineers at Mobile Eye and BMW considered that when they decided on the modes for our system.

IMHO it works extremely well in Los Angeles Freeway commuting traffic. Now that I've had it, I'd not want a car without it.  

In Europe we can activate ACC without DAPP after buying the car, as it comes with the needed radar standard. But afaik activating ACC doesn’t give you Traffic Jam Assist ie doesn’t steer the car at any speed with or without hands on the wheel. I haven’t yet tried the i4’s ACC but I used to have it in my X2 (camera only, no radar) and it was usable mainly for long distances without heavy traffic - in heavy traffic it was nearly useless. In my temp Volvo with Pilot Assist, it is much better and I use it in heavy traffic sometimes as well. Of course it doesn’t react as I would, especially when cars are changing lanes in front of you, so I don’t always feel the need to activate it under such conditions. But for longer distances it’s a huge advantage. The i4 I ordered (dealer stock car) doesn’t have DAPP and I will be activating ACC after taking delivery.  

In the i4 is radar based.  

It's brilliant. You won't regret getting it. It speeds up/slows down smoothly and reacts pretty much instantaneously if a car leaps out into your safety gap.  

It just works. Keeps car in the lane. Traffic Jam assist in conjunction just works. Tanzanite over tartufo full individual leather with carbon trim.  

I did the ACC upgrade through connected drive store recently. It works really great. Keeps a nice distance, adjusts speed smoothly. If switching lanes from behind a slower driver it speeds up naturally towards the car I had to wait for before switching lanes. In busy traffic sometimes I turn it off because it does not look beyond the first car before me. If I see traffic before me slowing down I don't want to wait for the driver in front of me to react. Also easy to toggle between ACC and 'dumb' CC.  

How do you toggle between ACC and dumb CC? Otherwise it works fine. But if you stand still for some time in traffic it needs a nudge when traffic starts moving again

And I'm unclear as to how this is different from adaptive cruise control. My BMW X5 45e w/ACC would do what you described (with hands on the wheel of course).  

TJA lets you take your hands off as long as you are paying attention. That's the only difference.  

Worth it. Just buy it.

I've said this before but I think some people don't want to hear what they don't like...😉 The online store options are country dependant. Each region decides what they want to make available, in the same way the options you can buy when you order a car can vary between countries. I don't believe Iconic Sounds has any special requirements but it just isn't available in some countries' stores. You can't get it in Canada for instance.

A bargain hah! I bought it at £600  

I did too. I like the feature. It is not perfect for sure especially in the middle of the city but good enough for now. I wish BMW would learn from the drive habits and modify the stop/go algorithms depending on location and speed. They do have millions of data points from real drivers in real life situations that can train the ai

BMW 5 Series: Operation - Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function

Activation and deactivation

The activation and deactivation of the ACC Stop&Go and the Dynamic Cruise Control are almost the same. ACC Stop&Go can either be activated while driving or at a standstill. For safety reasons, when the vehicle is at a standstill the function can only be put in Standby mode or deactivated while the foot brake is applied.

If the function is active, it can be interrupted by pressing the RES/CNCL button. The distance and speed will no longer be maintained and the set speed is greyed out in the instrument cluster.

The driver can select a desired distance in four stages using the left-hand multifunction button on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL). The following distance most recently selected is saved depending on the key being used.

• The following graphic shows the button assignment for the Driver Assistance Systems on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in vehicles with the Active Driving Assistant Plus optional equipment (OE 5AT):

• Button for activating or deactivating the Active Lane Keeping Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant
• Button for activating or deactivating ACC Stop&Go
• Rocker switch for changing the set speed
• "SET" button for setting the speed of cruise control
• Button for adjusting the distance of the driver's vehicle to the vehicle driving ahead
• Button for calling up a saved set speed/temporarily switching off the cruise control

The set speed is indicated in the instrument cluster in the familiar way; by a mark that moves round the speed reading. If ACC Stop&Go is activated, this mark is green, whereas in "Standby" mode it is grey and the last set speed is displayed. After the ACC Stop&Go function is activated or after the driver has adjusted the set speed, the current digital value is displayed. If the distance is changed, a symbol appears briefly as an acknowledgement. The symbol screen masks are for example the set speed and the distance bar. With each subsequent operation the display is shown for another three seconds.

The distances set by the driver, as well as the distances to any vehicles driving ahead, that must be maintained to ensure a safe distance are displayed between the two round instruments (speed reading and engine speed display). The distance setting is stored for the ID transmitter currently being used.

As with DCC, the symbol screen masks are complemented, if necessary, with notes in the instrument cluster for ACC Stop&Go.

With active control the displays are also shown in the Head‐Up Display (optional equipment OE 610).

If the system can no longer adjust a safe distance, for example due to very high differential speeds, then the driver is prompted to take over the vehicle handling by a flashing red vehicle symbol and an acoustic signal.

The speedometer mark for the Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function also lights up green in the speed reading.

Distance 3 is approximately half the value of the speed indicator in metres and is pre-set automatically when the system is first switched on.

Looks like a great feature to have on long trips or on heavy traffic. BMW Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. Relaxed driving even in heavy traffic: Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function ensures that your BMW remains a predefined distance away from the car ahead, reducing the speed to zero if necessary. When the traffic begins to move again, the system accelerates your BMW - up to your preferred cruising speed if possible. Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go function is primarily intended to serve as a driver assistant on freeways and highways. Three radar sensors with a range of up to 150 metres permanently monitor the road ahead. As you approach a slower vehicle in your lane, the system directs the engine control unit to reduce power output and if necessary apply the brakes to ensure you remain a predefined distance away. If the vehicle ahead stops, ACC with Stop & Go will bring your BMW to a complete standstill too. When the vehicle ahead moves off again or changes lanes, ACC with Stop & Go increases engine power; if possible, your BMW accelerates to your preferred cruising speed. If the total standstill is longer than three seconds, ACC with Stop & Go requires you to briefly apply the accelerator or press the ACC button to bring your BMW into motion again. If the standstill is briefer than three seconds, acceleration is automatic. Up to four different cruising speeds can be predefined and activated by the press of a button. Minimum cruising speed is 30 km/h; maximum is 180 km/h. The distance to the vehicle ahead is measured in seconds rather than metres. This ensures that you have adequate reaction time in relation to the speed you are travelling at. ACC with Stop & Go makes driving both more relaxing and safer. It adjusts your speed if needed on bends, using data from DSC and the navigation system to calculate a safe speed. On multi-lane roads, the system is able to differentiate between vehicles in your lane and in neighbouring lanes. ACC with Stop & Go function can be deactivated at any time by applying the accelerator or brake, giving you complete control over your speed. It is important to remember that Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function is not an autopilot. If the vehicle ahead brakes heavily and suddenly, or if the system recognises a critical situation, it alerts the driver with acoustic and optical warnings. Nonetheless, ACC with Stop & Go makes driving in heavy traffic or moving through congestion significantly less tiring.

Active Cruise Control on my 550i is awesome. It works quite well.  

I bought our 2015 X5 with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go. My MB S600 had a similar feature and we won’t buy a vehicle without it now. Things I love: * Heavy traffic doesn’t take so much concentration. You just keep the car in the lane. Two hours in heavy traffic is still annoying but not so tiring. * The radar is much better at anticipating changes in the car in front than I am. This means the car reacts instantly to the car in front slowing instead of my 0.5 second delayed reaction time. The result is less need for aggressive braking. * The aggressiveness of the speed adjustments is tunable with the driving mode. In sport mode the ACC will accelerate and brake harder than in Eco mode. Comfort mode is compromise between the other two modes. * I never feel like I am not driving the car. The car is adjusting my speed but I can accelerate and brake any time I want. * In Eco mode the car uses the alternator to slow down before using the braking system. I get better mileage and less brake wear. * My wife is much more relaxed because she know the computer is always paying attention. I am an attentive driver but wife is generally nervous when anyone is driving. With ACC she seems much more relaxed with both the computer and me paying attention. And when the car slows abruptly she knows it is caused by the car in front and not me. * Folowing distance setting ranges seems about right. On the shortest setting the car follows a bit less than 2 seconds. This seems about right to avoid inviting people to jump into your lane. The farthest distance is a bit over 3 seconds, which feels relaxed and smooth for passengers. Things that could improve: * Our ACC version does not properly recognize someone jumping into your lane. So the car does not slow down until the first rear corner of the intruding car is in the center of your lane. At higher speeds this is fine. But under 20 MPH our car gets too close to the intruding car and I have to brake. * BMW seems to view these advanced safety/convenience features as a high-end luxury option. Either that or the reaction from the “I always want to be in control of my car” crowd had convinced them they don’t need features that Accords come standard with now. My wife and I wanted a m235i three years ago but couldn’t get ACC. I told her to wait. Oldly you can now get the ACC on a 230i if it is fairly stripped otherwise. My wife is not a fan of the larger 4 series. She fell in love with the tight reflexes of the m235i and the m240i. I had her convinced to get an M4 and then found out you can’t get an M4 with ACC. I think we’ll end up with an Audi S5 as a result. Hope this is useful to anyone deciding on the feature.

With all this nanny radar sensing going on, how is my V1 going to be affectedf? If in a negative fashion, methinks I'd rather enjoy the driving experience and forego the active cruise, etal.  

If your V1 radar detector is adversely effected by the radars transmitting out from your car then you'll probably have issues with the cars around you transmitting radar at your car.  

I don't want any more unnecessary parts on the car. SIC Didn't even want the moon roof. Those extra parts will die and you will pay an arm and leg to fix, if you have mechanical ability. The times I am driving on the road, I can look up and see merging cars, slow traffic, an accident ahead, and many other visual ques to take my foot off the gas and apply to the brake. Are people getting that lazy?  

I rented a car with adaptive cruise control on a business trip last month - I found it annoying. It's very accurate at matching speed, but it leaves quite a gap at highway speeds even if adjusted to it's 'closest' setting. It will slow the car down to maintain that gap if somebody new pulls in front of you. So you end up driving like a fearful slow poke when on the freeway. Such behavior is not so evident on two lane highways, where passing is rare. The other thing I'll say is it's not as smooth a driver as I am. It's reactive; I'm predictive. It's a sequential processor and has limited memory; I'm a massively parallel processor and I have as many neurons as there are stars in the galaxy. Computers have been around 50 years or so, I'm the product of 500 million years of evolution. The good thing about the active cruise control is that it never gets distracted. So I'll put up with it's childish mental agility for it's Zen like attentiveness. Other things about it: If you come to a complete stop and have either Auto Hold on or engine start-stop enabled, to get going again you have to tap the accelerator. Otherwise it will sit there like an old stable horse until you wake it up. You can't turn off the feature of matching speed to the car ahead. I would like the option to have it revert to prior generation behavior. BTW, and rant warning: It's to me more evidence of why driverless cars will never work, unless 100% of them are in some big brother network. If you want to know what that is like, see the opening scenes of the Bruce Willis version of Twelve Monkeys, where he's caught in a traffic jam for several years! Another example is the feature my rig has to read speed limit signs. I'd say it's about 75% accurate, meaning 25% of the time it is dead wrong, dead being the operative word here. Imagine your driverless car turing off a 60mph highway to a farm road with no speed limit sign. How fast shall it go? What wisdom would it possess to infer a safe speed? I did this yesterday and it just stayed at 60 mph. (Fortunately, it's display only, and is not coupled to the cruise control.) I'm 70 years old and I may yet live long enough to see the coming driverless carnage. rant off, but it was fun; I have more examples, but this is enough

If my husband and I wish to stop at all the stations that are beautiful, without going outside the metro system, does this count as one journey? How many tickets do we buy?

Once you enter the system, you can travel to all of the stations on the same fare (less than $1). Just keep in mind that there are a lot of stations in the system and it will take more than a day to see all of the interesting ones.

Yes, you can see the beautiful stations on just one ticket provided you do not exit the metro via the turnstiles. Thus you can get out at each stop - wander around the metro station itself and then hop back on the next convenient train. The circle line (on the Moscow Metro Map it is a brown circle) is often considered to have some of the most beautiful stations. Though many of the other lines running inside the circle line also have beautiful stations.

If you are in Moscow for 3-4 days,then it is better to purchase a 20 ticket card which will cost you 747 Rubles.So,per trip,

the cost will be 37.50 Rubles.Reasonable.

You pay per trip, so this would be one trip. As long as you don’t go outside the station gate you are fine. It is really cheap per trip.

For your suggested trip take the main circle (inner circle) this will show you the old Stalin style stations which are beautiful

So far as I know you can travel anywhere on the underground on one ticket. You only have to pay again if you exit at a station to see parts of Moscow at ground level! Having said that, ticket costs are very reasonable and you can buy a card valid for several journeys (different options are available) at ticket offices. Few ticket office attendants seem to speak English, so you need someone with a good command of Russian here! Also, be aware that finding your way around stations and lines is easy enough since they are colour coded but take great care to check which platform you need to reach your required stop - this can be confusing if you find Cyrillic hard to read!!
