WTTC launches Safe Travels protocols for Adventure Travel

New measures help to rebuild confidence for travellers

Latest phases of protocols aid the reopening of Travel & Tourism sector

London, UK : The World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) has unveiled the latest set of measures designed to rebuild global consumer confidence, reduce risk and encourage the return of Safe Travels.

The latest protocols for the global Travel & Tourism sector focus on measures to ensure the reopening of adventure tourism, which should see an increase in popularity as travellers seek more unique experiences post COVID-19.

WTTC, which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, held detailed discussions with key stakeholders and organisations to ensure maximum buy-in, alignment and practical implementation.

The measures help to set clear expectations of what travellers can experience in the ‘new normal’ which offer safe environments as travel restrictions are eased.

Backed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the WTTC protocols also take into account guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ), and the WTTC Safe Travels stamp recognises those destinations, countries, businesses and governments worldwide which have adopted them.

Protocols for the adventure tourism industry were compiled on the basis of insights and frameworks developed by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), in collaboration with a number of key tour operators in the segment such as Abercrombie & Kent, Eurotur, Intrepid and The Travel Corporation (TTC), to support the safe, healthy and responsible restart of adventure tourism around the world. 

Within these protocols, the adventure tourism industry refers to a wide variety of adventure tourism experiences including cycling, rafting, trekking, skiing, snowboarding, wildlife safaris and culinary tours, among others. 

Not only are these activities mostly outdoors, thus limiting time spent in indoors; but group sizes can be managed to allow for physical distancing. It is expected that this type of tourism will see growth in the post-COVID landscape.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: 

“ Adventure tourism is becoming increasingly popular amongst travellers and will represent a key component to travel in the new normal. According to our recently launched COVID-19 Travel Demand Recovery Dashboard, it is also one of the fastest growing segments, which is why it is vital to establish measures allowing safe travels for adventure travellers.

“ Consumer confidence is crucial for Travel & Tourism to resume. We know travellers will want to explore the world around them once more, so long as they are confident in their safety. The return of Travel & Tourism will help power the world’s much-needed economic recovery, which is why these protocols are so important. 

“ We would like to pay tribute to all those companies in the global private sector who have stepped forward and rallied around in support of the WTTC Safe Travels protocols. They create the consistency needed to allow a re-invigorated Travel & Tourism sector to re-open for business.

The welfare of travellers and the millions of people employed throughout the Travel & Tourism sector at the heart of WTTC’s comprehensive package of Safe Travels protocols.

They avoid the emergence of multiple standards, which would only confuse the consumer and delay the sector’s recovery.

They also provide consistency to destinations and countries as well as guidance to travel providers, airlines, airports, operators, and travellers, about the new approach to health and hygiene in the post COVID-19 world. 

WTTC divided the new guidance into four pillars including operational and staff preparedness; delivering a safe experience; rebuilding trust and confidence; and implementing enabling policies.

Measures announced today include:

• Reduce participant capacity limits for activities as appropriate to allow for physical distancing
• Ensured activity difficulty levels do not exceed guest ability and skill, thus decreasing the need for a possible rescue
• Provide clear, consistent, and up-to-date communication on new health & hygiene protocols via the organisation’s channels, both digitally and physically through clear signage
• Promote contact tracing apps if required by local legislation
• Inform guests about support available if questions or concerns arise
• Share guest guidelines ahead of trip or activity digitally and in person upon arrival on the basis of advice from health authorities, which may include the wearing of face masks or coverings, guidance on hand hygiene and avoiding physical contact. Consider having consumers acknowledge guidelines
• Encouraged guests to purchase tickets online if possible
• Keep the same households, families, or members of group bookings together for all activities to lower risk of exposure for those outside of that unit, wherever possible
• Ensure, where possible, that each guest can handle their own equipment and gear for the duration of the trip. Where possible, guests should be encouraged bring their own equipment or gear, such as bikes, skis, and helmets among others
• Limited physical contact and queuing where possible

WTTC has previously issued details safe travel protocols for aviation, airlines, MICE, tour operators, hospitality, outdoor retail, attractions, car hire and short-term rental, which were widely endorsed and supported by top CEOs and business leaders globally.

It has also unveiled its landmark new global safety stamp to encourage Safe Travels and the reopening of the Travel & Tourism sector.

Evidence from WTTC’s Crisis Readiness report , which looked at 90 different types of crises, highlights the importance of public-private cooperation to ensure that smart policies and effective communities are in place to enable a more resilient Travel & Tourism sector.  

According to WTTC’s 2020 Economic Impact Report , during 2019, Travel & Tourism was responsible for one in 10 jobs (330 million total), making a 10.3% contribution to global GDP and generating one in four of all new jobs.

From group trekking to cycling and whitewater rafting, here are the newest global health and safety guidelines for adventure travelers.

In an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 among thrill-seeking adventure travelers , the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) this week released its official health and safety guidelines. The new protocols aim to help adventure travel companies around the globe safely reopen as they guide adventurers on hikes, bike trips, and rafting expeditions.

And while general practices like social distancing and hand-washing reign supreme, the Cleveland Clinic (ranked the world’s second-best hospital  by Newsweek) co-created the guidelines alongside the ATTA and tour operators with a specific eye to adventure travel.

The guidelines feature a general handbook for guided outdoor activities plus sport-specific manuals for cycling, trekking, and rafting. The ATTA organization develops and protects sustainable adventure tourism around the globe. So these COVID-19 guidelines apply state to state in the United States and for international trips.

While the handbook focuses on what guides and operators can do, as an adventure traveler, you can leverage these guidelines to advocate for your own health and safety, too.

Overall Outdoor Adventure Guidelines

In general, ATTA notes that when outdoor travelers socially distance and wear masks, they lower the risk of COVID-19 transmission. And, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) continues to impress, folks can substantially reduce their risk of exposure by staying 6 feet apart. People can also wash their hands with soap and water often, as well as wear a cloth face cover to help prevent the spread.

Beyond those common practices, recreationists can expect plenty of new safety protocols on guided trips from rafting to trekking. Here are the key takeaways from the ATTA “ Adventure Travel COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidelines ” for outdoor travelers.

Destinations and Insurance: What to Expect

As you choose a destination, check the travel restrictions where you live and plan to go, as you likely know. But also remember to review any restrictions related to returning home, like a self-quarantine mandate. And don’t be surprised if some destinations require the use of a contact tracing app.

Unfortunately, some bucket-list spots might be a petri dish for spreading coronavirus. And popular yet vulnerable communities may temporarily not allow visitors. So, heed your guide’s recommendations for less-frequented locations.

Regardless of location, the ATTA recommends that travelers purchase travel insurance. Make sure the coverage encompasses each destination and high-risk activity, like rock climbing. However, “no policy covers all COVID-19 travel risks,” the ATTA reports. So, carefully study your policy and understand who is expected to pay for potential incurred costs.

Guided Group Trips: Best Practices to Watch Out For

Before joining a guided group, you’ll most likely need to fill out a COVID-19 waiver. The form should include questions regarding isolation habits, test outcomes, and the existence of symptoms. On the ground, guides might administer temperature checks or inquire about symptoms.

For all activities, the number of people in a guided group should be reduced when possible. Furthermore, families and same-household groups have less probability of virus transmission versus a group that comprises folks from multiple origins. In a group, the social distancing and sanitization needs of other travelers might be far greater — or less — than yours. Ask your guide to help cooperatively manage those diverse comfort levels.

Throughout any group trip, COVID-19 risk increases during vehicle transport. To mitigate exposure, passengers can — and should — open windows and sit spaced apart. Additionally, if food is provided, don’t grab servings from buffet-style containers.

Also check to see if your drivers — or guides — are wearing additional personal protective equipment (PPE), like a face shield and gloves.

As trips are staged, guides will advise about gear-fitting — like bikes, helmets, footwear, or packs — without hands-on adjustments. If they’re pointing, it’s not to be rude! When you choose your gear, like a personal flotation device (PFD), don’t touch other surfaces or equipment. The staging ground can be exciting: Slow down and be sure to pick up the correct size from the get-go.

Once you have set up your personal gear, you’ll be expected to transport and care for that equipment for the trip’s duration. For instance, you might need to load your bike onto a rack. Guides can help explain if you’re unsure how, and there are loads of helpful videos online, straight from the manufacturers.

As much as you’re inclined to, don’t share or swap your gear. If your equipment has mechanical issues, like a bike, your guide will try to coach you on how to fix it. And they should provide a clean repair kit. Alternatively, there might be a designated mechanic that handles the tools for the whole trip.

As a traveler, you should expect that any provided equipment be properly sanitized between uses. For example, gear that comes into contact with skin — backpacks, clothing, and sleeping bags — should be cleaned. Equipment like harnesses and helmets need to be disinfected according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and proven methods.

Be aware: The more frequently that equipment is used, the harder it is to routinely sanitize, like a ropes course. These protocols are now in the hands of guides, so they should be practicing enhanced safety measures. But if you’re unsure, ask them.

When you change into gear before and after a trip, allow more time. That will help limit the number of people in changing areas.

Cycling Guidelines

At times, wearing a face mask while cycling could be a challenge or restrict breathing. Per ATTA recommendations, cyclists should wear a face cover primarily when physical distancing isn’t possible. Riders can also wear one during close-proximity instruction or assistance, while taking breaks, or when hopping on transportation.

As you ride with a group, pedal in a staggered formation, rather than immediately behind or next to another rider. You’ll have to work a little harder without that slipstream.

Rafting Guidelines

For rafting, ATTA recommends that companies use two- or four-person boats instead of eight-person boats. On the boat, rafters should sit as far apart as possible.

Socializing at the put-in or take-out is customary — sorry! Keep your gear organized for an efficient launch at the boat ramp, rather than lingering in a public shared space. Same drill for the take-out. Multiple boats on a single trip should stick close together to minimize exposure to other groups.

In river culture, it can be hard to not offer or accept help. But for now, the same designated crew members need to manage your boat throughout the trip.

During whitewater adventures, it’s good to wear a face mask throughout close-proximity instruction and stretches of flatwater.

However, where there is a risk of falling in the water — during a row of rapids, for example — remove that face mask.

If river traffic is high, the size of eddies and beaches will become a big factor for breaks. If there’s not enough space to socially distance, y’all might need to keep paddling.

Guides should strive to avoid the rowdiest lines that could land folks outside the boat. If someone falls out, rescues should be as quick as possible in order to limit close contact.

Trekking Guidelines

As you trek with a guided group, wear a face mask during close-proximity instruction. Keep it on while helping each other along harder terrain. Also, use a face cover on crowded trails and when you cross paths with other trekkers. A face mask is also good to use where social distancing is difficult to maintain, like on singletrack through a thick forest.

On any guided group adventure, be prepared to meet other travelers at the trailheads or stops along the way. Those groups might not know or follow the same safety standards as your group. Before the trip, ask your guide about the recommended etiquette and communication during those situations.

At the end of the day, we’re all eager to get outside and play again. So don’t be shy about your personal safety protocols. And with these ATTA guidelines, you should feel empowered to observe — and trust — your guides’ safety priorities as well.

Adventure Travel

Adventure travel is a popular way to explore destinations and test your physical abilities. It typically includes “extreme” activities such as backpacking, diving, rafting, surfing, and zip lining. Adventure travel is often to remote locations, where medical care may be limited, weather changes may be unexpected, and communication may be unreliable. Check out CDC’s tips on how to plan for your adventure.

Before Your Trip

Train properly and prepare for your trip. Many adventure tours and activities can be physically demanding, so it is important that you are physically ready for your trip. Know your personal limits. Make sure you have necessary supplies, including proper clothing and safety gear. Specific supplies and gear will depend on your destination and activities.

Make an appointment with your healthcare provider or a travel health specialist  that takes place at least one month before you leave. They can help you get destination-specific vaccines, medicines, and information. Discussing your health concerns, itinerary, and planned activities with your provider allows them to give more specific advice and recommendations.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all of your routine vaccines . Routine vaccinations protect you from infectious diseases such as measles that can spread quickly in groups of unvaccinated people. Many diseases prevented by routine vaccination are not common in the United States but are still common in other countries.

Plan for the unexpected. It is important to plan for unexpected events as much as possible. Doing so can help you get quality health care or avoid being stranded at a destination. A few steps you can take to plan for unexpected events are to  get travel insurance ,    learn where to get health care during travel ,  pack a travel health kit ,  and  enroll in the Department of State’s STEP .

Some travel medical insurance policies do not cover certain types of adventure activities. Check your policy’s coverage before taking part in adventure travel.

During Travel

If you have a guide or safety instructor, follow their instructions. Wear appropriate protective gear, such as a helmets or life jackets for water activities.

Take recommended medicines as directed. If your doctor prescribes medicine for you, take the medicine as directed before, during, and after travel. Counterfeit drugs are common in some countries, so only take medicine that you bring from home and make sure to pack enough for the duration of your trip, plus extra in case of travel delays. After Travel

However, there are challenges, such as ensuring the sustainability of adventure tourism practices and preserving natural and cultural resources.

Safety Management in the Adventure Tourism Industry

The growth of commercial adventure tourism products globally over the last half-century has coincided with increasing levels of professionalism. By nature, engagement in an adventure encompasses challenges to be overcome; some of which may carry a real risk of harm to participants and employees. The chapter describes the nature of adventure experiences within the commercial operating environment. With a focus on activity safety, selected national and international standards available to the adventure tourism operators are described along with a national safety auditing scheme. The industry’s future is discussed, with the outlook bright in provisioning quality tourist experiences.

A step-by-step guide for planning adventure travel

New to adventure travel? Welcome! You won't ever look back. 😉 But you probs need some help to get started, as budgeting and planning for an adventure trip isn't second nature. So let us guide you through it, step by step.

So you want to have an adventure in a fresh, exciting and far-off place ... but how do you make it happen? Follow our step-by-step guide below to help you plan for an amazing adventure trip!

1. Choose a location

The location should spark serious excitement in you whenever you think about it

This is usually the easiest part of planning an adventure trip, because you've seen images of a place you like the look of, or a friend has told you of somewhere that whets your appetite. You probably already know where you want to go, and have maybe been wanting to go there for years already!

The most important part when deciding on a destination is, in our opinion, ensuring that it's somewhere you really want to visit. Don't go somewhere because 'everyone else' has gone there, or you feel it's a rite of passage.

It takes a decent bit of time, effort and money to put together an adventure trip. So ensure the location you choose is somewhere that really excites you and will propel you through the necessary admin you must undertake beforehand.

Choose somewhere that is really thrilling to you, no matter what anyone else is doing or thinks about it.

So speaking of admin, once you've chosen your adventure travel destination, it's time to do some research and start organising everything. The first thing we suggest you do is look is find out if travellers are actually welcomed there.

2. Research if travellers are welcomed and safe

It's important to ensure you'll be safe on your adventure trip. It's goes without saying that some countries are safer for travellers than others. But there are also certain groups of people that need to take special care in choosing a location.

Attitude and behaviour towards women

Women in particular should look into their rights and treatment in the destination

Female travellers need to consider the fact that they're not equal in the eyes of the law in some countries, especially in the Middle East. This makes them vulnerable, as they have fewer rights. Solo women travellers in particular should take care.

Further, adventure travel also often takes place in remote regions where certain gender roles are firmly in place. Will you be okay if attitudes towards you as a woman (and expectations of you) aren't what you're used to?

Also consider if you're willing to adapt your dress if norms dictate that it's needed. While most of us are fine with the idea of taking off our shoes and covering our shoulders in religious and sacred spaces, are you okay should you be required to cover up more than that? You want to be a respectful traveller but without making yourself uncomfortable.

Attitude and behaviour towards LGBTQIA+ folks

Anyone who's part of the LGBTQIA+ community also needs to consider if they'll be welcomed and safe in the desired destination.

Certain countries (particularly in Asia and Africa) aren't accepting of people of all orientations. And we mean this in the legal sense too. Consider if you'd be happier travelling somewhere with more liberal views and policies?

Stability of the region

Choose a conflict-free country or region

Further, ask yourself how stable the destination country is right now? If you're not a news junkie, then you might not know about various issues. Please do some research to find about any conflicts or other relevant issues that could negatively affect your travels.

You might also want to consider if your visit bolsters a tourism-promoting government that doesn't hold values or treat its people in a way that sits right with you.

Also check that no natural disasters have made the area you wish to visit temporarily (or permanently) a no-go. That said, once it's safe to go again, your visit could well be a vital contributor towards a hurt tourism industry rebuilding itself. Trips to Nepal , for instance, are wildly appreciated by its tourism stakeholders as they suffered terribly in the wake of the 2015 earthquake.

What diplomatic ties are in place?

It's also worth finding out if your two countries have diplomatic relations? Do you have an embassy you can turn to in emergencies?

Obviously we're not trying to say who should or shouldn't travel where. But if you're an adventure travel newbie, please consider the points mentioned above.

Finally, as we discuss during step #9, you're often safer with an adventure tour operator if you feel you're part of a demographic that might in any way be vulnerable while travelling in a certain country, or in general.

3. Decide on your trip's duration and activities

Your trip can be centred on an adventure activity, or simply include some along the way

We think it's a good idea to write down all the places and things you want to do on an adventure trip before thinking about the budget. Similar to creative writing, have fun making a dream itinerary, and only afterwards do some editing. In this way you'll see what it is you really want to do and see.

Once you've made your list of desired activities and tallied up the number of days needed, it's time to consider the budget (and perhaps how many days of leave you can get). At this point, you actually need to engage with step #5 as well, which is about costing everything. Because you'll need to back and forth between your itinerary and your costings. As you find out prices and fees, you'll likely need to remove (or perhaps add!) some items from your itinerary.

Try to balance saving pennies with ensuring you're still planning the adventure trip you really want to have. Often you're only going to get to that special destination once in your life, so you want to ensure you see and do the things that really matter to you.

4. Make a budget

Each type of adventure trip has many costs to consider

A budget that really works for you requires a handful of steps, as discussed below ...

A. Find out what everything costs

This task can be a little bit time-consuming, but it's worth doing it right the first time to prevent any nasty shocks further down the line.

Here's a list of 'big ticket' items to research in terms of cost and then use to create your budget:

• Airfares (be sure you get prices that include airport taxes)
• A new or renewed passport (as discussed in step #7)
• Local transport (from airport transfers to trains, buses, etc.)
• Accommodation (check to see if airport transfers are included, as well as perhaps other local travel)
• Food and drinks (you may need to buy drinking water depending on your location)
• Travel insurance (see step #14)
• Any national park and similar permits and fees, which cam sometimes be hefty (see step #13)
• Any necessary gear and clothing (see steps #15 and #16)
• A tour operator fee (it's mandatory to use a tour operator on some adventure trips, like climbing Kilimanjaro)
• A tour guide, driver, porter, etc. (again, these might be mandatory)

Here now is a list of more inexpensive items to consider, some of which may or may not apply to you and your trip:

• A visa or visas (if visiting Bhutan this would actually be a major expense)
• Service tips (check if this is expected for your type of adventure trip)
• An international adapter and power bank (see step #17)
• Any vaccinations or other meds like anti-malaria tablets (see step #6)
• Souvenirs and gifts (more on this below)

Top tip: if you don't already have one, look into obtaining a credit card that offers traveller rewards and travel insurance when you buy flights with it.

B. Refine your itinerary if necessary

As we discussed under step #4, once you know how much everything costs, you can refine your itinerary. Then, once you've decided on a final itinerary, you may or may not need to give yourself some months to save ...

C. Make a savings plan if necessary

An adventure trip is something exciting to save for

A lot of adventure travellers aren't wealthy folks who just point at a map and then flash about a credit card. Often they're folks who prioritise travel over other possible expenditures.

If you really want to make adventure travel happen for you and need to save, put together a savings plan that you start working towards straight away. Consider if there are nice-to-have's that you can give up, even if just for this year, to make your dream happen.

At the same time, if you realise your savings plan is too strenuous and will just make you stressed, consider revisiting your itinerary, or perhaps push out the planned date of the trip.

D. Consider what initial costs and deposits are needed

In one sense, you need two budgets for an adventure trip. This is because you usually need to pay certain deposits early on. Also, you might want to buy your flights in advance (although this is happening less and less given the uncertainty brought about by the pandemic). The rest of the adventure trip's expenses are often only payable at the time of the trip itself.

So we suggest that you work out what amount you need upfront (or at an earlier date) and what amount is only needed by the trip date.

Try to ensure your money goes into the local economy

It's best to buy souvenirs and gifts from local vendors to ensure your money stays in the country

Ever heard of economic leakage? This is when the money you spend in a destination ends up in the pockets of overseas folks – often with large multinationals. This is a sad reality in many of the world's most beautiful and popular adventure travel destinations.

We encourage you to look for accommodation and other services that are run by or employ locals (and we're talking in positions of management too, not just at the 'bottom' of the organisation). If you want to really make a difference , try to look for companies that use local suppliers too (for instance, buying produce from local farmers).

5. Research health risks and requirements

You now need to find out if there are any health-related requirements for entry into the destination. Many East African nations, for instance, won't allow you in without proof of a yellow fever vaccine.

Pro tip: don't leave things to the last minute. A yellow fever vaccine, for instance, can make you feel icky for a few days, and moreover needs to be done 10 days before your trip.

You also need to learn if there are any precautions you should take, like anti-malaria medication. When high-altitude trekking, some travellers like to take a medication like Diamox to reduce the possible side effects.

In terms of malaria, you'll want to choose accommodation (which we discuss in point #12) that provides bed netting. And you'll also want to pack anti-mozzie spray or lotion. Long pants and long sleeves also help to protect you from being bitten.

Finally, linked to our discussion in point #13, you would do well to buy travel insurance that covers you for the particular activity you're doing. For instance, high-altitude trekkers should purchase insurance that covers them for trekking up to a certain altitude. Some countries won't even allow you to trek without such insurance.

Plan a small first aid kit

We also recommend that you pack yourself a small first aid kit. If you travel with a tour operator they should have a kit, but it's still a good idea to have your own one. You can't be sure a tour operator will have everything you might like or need.

Some items we recommend you put into your personal first aid kit are:

• A sterilised cotton wool pad
• Plasters (band aids)
• A small bandage
• Anti-diarrhoea medications
• Anti-constipation medication
• Anti-nausea medication
• Hay fever medication

6. Check your passport date

You need an up-to-date passport to travel internationally

It's easy to overlook checking your passport's expiry date until it's too late. Don't be one of those people!

Generally you need a passport that's valid for at least three months after you return date. This is an important bit of info, so please don't overlook it (or do bad math!).

If you're new to adventure travel, perhaps you're also new to international travel and so you'll need to actually apply for a passport. Depending where you live, you'll have a different wait time, and it may or may not be a reliable timeframe. Check your government's website for details and try to action this step as soon as possible.

7. Look into visa requirements

A Schengen visa is required for many visiting Europe

Depending on where you're coming from and travelling to, you may need to organise a visa. As with most things involving a government, don't leave this to the last second!

Sometimes you can obtain a visa upon arrival in a country, but you can't count on this. Be sure to do your research beforehand to know what's expected and so get your ducks in a row.

8. Decide if you want to travel alone or with others

Solo travel has been gaining in popularity this century

Now's the time to lock in any friends or family that you want to go with you. Remember that not everyone you get along with is going to be your cup of tea as a travel companion. It's worthwhile checking that any fellow travellers really buy into the itinerary you have in mind.

Another option is flying off on your own. Solo travel is no longer a last resort. Many choose to travel on their own, for various reasons. We encourage you not to put off adventure travel if you have nobody you know to go with you. Go by yourself and enjoy your independence and own wonderful company!

Alternatively, use your social networks to put out feelers to see if anyone you know would like to go with you. Many folks don't like to initiate things themselves, but are happy to jump on a train that's already in motion!

Another option is to join a group of unknowns. Adventure travel groups are often compromised of strangers who become friends during the course of the trip!

9. Sign up with a tour operator or book things yourself

Whether travelling alone or with others, you need to decide if you want to plan and do everything on your own, or use the services of a tour operator. If you opt to use a tour operator, now is the time to do this in your sequence of steps, as you need to confirm dates before you can book any flights.

So what are the pros and cons to organising your own trip? As well as the pros and cons of using a tour operator? This could be a whole discussion in itself, but here are a few of the most notable points for you to consider ...

Organising a trip yourself is preferable when you like to have complete control. And can also be helpful if you have an unusual itinerary in mind (although bare in mind that many – often smaller – travel companies like Follow Alice are happy to tailor trips to your wishes).

Some like to keep things super solo and don't want to have to the company of a local tour guide or the like.

On the other hand, one of the big perks of using a travel operator is that they do most of the legwork for you. Admin like booking accommodation, obtaining permits and booking transport are taken off your hands.

Another perk is that they know the area, the highlights and lowlights, pitfalls and dangers, and it's their job to ensure you have a great time. But please do your research well (which includes looking at reviews) and only select a tour operator that's reputable and good at their job!

On adventure trips, a tour operator is usually the safest option as they have local guides who know the dangers of the activity intimately and their primary job is to look after you and ensure your safety. They also should be trained in first aid. (Again, be sure to choose a reputable company with a good safety record, otherwise this advantage falls away.)

As mentioned in step #9, a tour operator is a very attractive option if you don't have anyone you know to travel with and would like to be put in a group with others. Many amazing friendships have been formed this way!

Tour operators often receive special rates, so sometimes they can book your accommodation and activities at a better cost than you'd be able to do on your own.

10. Book flights

Once your itinerary is decided, it's time to book flights

In the past you'd book trips and flights far in advance to avoid hefty last-minute prices (and the possibility of not getting a spot). These days last-minute deals are often the best deals of all! In an industry with everything in constant flux, there's no golden rule right now when it comes to booking flights.

The best advice we can give you is to simply keep your eyes open for deals.

Also, if you have any stopovers, be sure to give yourself a large enough window to cover any flight delays. The safest way to do multi-flight journeys is to use one airline if possible, as that way any missed connections are on them – they need to find you another flight, at no extra cost.

11. Book accommodation

Look for accommodation that benefits the local economy rather than large multinationals

While you shouldn't book any accommodation without first having your flights secured, we recommend looking into accommodation availability before booking your flights. You want to ensure you'll be able to stay in the desired location. And if you have your heart set on a particular establishment, you want to ensure they have a spot open for you.

The best thing to do here is to have an idea of your planned flights and then pay refundable deposits where possible for your accommodation. Once your accommodation is secured, you can book your flights. In this way, you can cancel your accommodation should anything go awry with your flights, and you won't lose any money.

Naturally the above suggestion isn't always possible. When this is the case, we feel it's better to secure your flights first and then amend your accommodation choices if necessary, rather than the other way around.

12. Purchase any necessary permits

Protected areas often require you to purchase an entrance permit

Much adventure travel happens in national parks, reserves and the like, and for these you often need to purchase entrance permits. This is an important part of your budget, as permits can by pricey, often charging a daily fee.

Some countries and regions also insist on other charges and fees. As we discuss in Nepal trekking permits and fees (2023) , for instance, you need to pay park fees but you also need a permit from the Government if you want to trek in Nepal, and you sometimes must also pay local municipal fees when entering an area. These costs add up and form an important part of your budget.

If you travel with a tour operator, check that these fees are part of the package fee (they usually are), and that the operator will acquire them for you. A good tour operator takes this admin off of your hands!

If you're organising permits yourself, be sure to find out which need to be acquired beforehand and which you can simply purchase as you go along.

13. Buy travel insurance

It's especially important to have travel insurance if you plan to do physical activities

Travel insurance is a critical part of adventure travel. Often on adventure trips you're engaging in physical activities that come, quite naturally, with more danger than a regular sort of holiday (such as a city tour or beach holiday).

Be sure to check with the authorities if any special type of insurance is required to be allowed to do your particular adventure trip. When doing a high-altitude trek, for instance, you need to buy insurance that covers you for climbing up to a certain elevation. The authorities often won't allow you to start certain treks without proof of such insurance.

14. Look into what equipment you need

Camping equipment is usually provided by your tour operator

Adventure travel often requires an assortment of special equipment, like tents, outdoor cooking equipment, kayaks, snorkels and flippers, emergency oxygen, and the list goes on.

If you're travelling on your own (versus with a tour operator), then it's especially important that you research and acquire the necessary equipment. If you choose to travel with a tour operator, they usually provide most of the necessary equipment, which is a big help. If they don't provide you with a list of the equipment that's included and not included as part of your package, be sure to ask for this.

Decide if you want to rent or buy

You can often rent equipment at destinations known for a particular type of adventure activity. We're talking sleeping bags, trekking poles, and so on.

Renting is a useful option to consider, for three reasons ...

• Firstly, local rental shops know the sort of equipment that's required to safely and comfortably do the activity for which the region is known. Provided you don't go to a dodgy shop basement shop that's trying to offer a ridiculous bargain, you should find informed sales staff who are able to explain and direct you towards what's needed for your particular adventure.
• Secondly, renting is a great option for expensive items that you're unsure you'll use again. If you're camping in a cold climate for the first time, for instance, you don't necessarily want to buy your own four-season sleeping bag. You want to first see how much you enjoy the experience before considering making such a big purchase!
• Thirdly, renting means you don't need to transport certain items (which are often heavy and bulky) across the globe. Even if you have a piece of equipment at home, you might opt to rent it at the location.

Do, of course, do thorough research into the rental situation in your destination before planning on this option! And be sure to factor in enough time for any rental arrangements – you don't want to rush important equipment decisions.

15. Research if you need any special clothing

Depending on your destination and activities, you may well need special clothing that you don't already have. Snow boots, hiking shoes, a winter jacket and thermal inner wear spring to mind here.

Be sure to thoroughly research what clothing and shoes are required for your type of adventure trip. And try to purchase certain items in advance so that you have time to test them out (and wear them in) if necessary. What seems great in theory might be a nightmare of discomfort or inadequacy in reality.

Top tip: plan to pack your most important clothing and shoes in your carry-on luggage. This way any lost luggage doesn't completely derail your adventure trip.

You can also often rent certain clothing items. We're talking winter jackets, balaclavas and the like. You can sometimes even rent hiking boots, but we advise against this as comfortable, worn-in shoes are often critical to the success of an adventure trip.

16. Check your gadgets' plugs are compatible

A tech gadget you can't charge is just extra weight!

Here are some things to check and research in terms of your tech gadgets:

• Check that there'll be plug points along your adventure route before taking along heavy equipment that you won't be able to charge. Or ensure you take along a power bank.
• Research the plug points available in the destination country to ensure your items will be able to be plugged in there. If not, you'll need to purchase a suitable adapter.
• If your equipment relies on batteries, check the ones in it still have some juice. And then pack spares. Always packs spares.
• Check if drones are allowed in your adventure destination before taking yours along.

Top tip: in some places you have to pay to charge devices. Find out if this is the case so you can budget for it and ensure you cash for such payments.

17. Notify the bank of your travel plans

It's always best to have some local currency on you and not only rely on bank cards

Be sure that your bank knows of your travel plans and dates so that your cards work in the destination country. If this goes wrong, you could end up in a serious pickle.

Ideally, acquire some local currency before leaving your home country just to ensure you have a backup. And of course having more than one card to draw from helps too.

Purchase foreign currency

Please do yourself the favour of finding out if your destination is a mostly cash economy, and then ensuring you get your mitts on some local currency before heading off into wild and remote places where there are no ATMs. You could otherwise come unstuck when wanting to buy a soft drink, purchase a souvenir, or tip someone.

Often you can get cash at the airport upon landing, but always have a backup plan in case the machine there isn't working.

Pro tip: ensure your bank notes (local or foreign) are kept neat and unbent, and aren't torn. In some places damaged or bent notes aren't of value.

Note that in some places, US dollars and euros might be desirable, but certainly don't assume this. Also please find out if dollars printed before a certain date are accepted in the host country – sometimes only dollars dated from a certain year have value.

18. Share copies of your itinerary and insurance

Let someone know exactly where you're going

Before leaving on your adventure, ensure someone close to you at home has the following:

• a copy of your itinerary
• a copy of your insurance policy, with a contact number highlighted
• the contact details of your tour operator and/or accommodation

Naturally the expectation and hope is that nothing will go wrong, and the only contact you'll have with loved ones back home is fun travel updates. But it's better to be safe and ensure you've shared these important docs with someone back home.

19. Switch your phone to roaming

There's connection now in many of the world's remote adventure destinations

The very last thing you need to remember before heading off on your dream adventure trip is to switch your cellphone to roaming! Folks at home will want a text when you land letting them know that all is good.

Note that it's worth looking into buying a SIM card in certain countries, as these can be really cheap and a much more economical choice than using your own SIM card. Or even better in many cases is an eSIM .

Once your phone is on roaming and you're boarding your plane, it's time to relax and just be in the moment. You've done all the work, and now it's adventure time!

The Ministry of Tourism along with the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) has launched a set of guidelines on ‘Safety and Quality Norms for Adventure Tourism in India’. The guidelines list the basic minimum standards for adventure tourism activities.

2. The Guidelines were launched by Hon’ble Minister of Tourism (I/C) Shri K.J. Alphons in the august presence of officials of the Ministry of Tourism, state governments & Union Territory Tourism Departments, members of the travel trade and hospitality industry, members of the media and other stakeholders.

3. Adventure tourism has grown rapidly over the past few years playing a vital role in the economic growth of India as well as attracting a large number of travelers from across the globe to the country.

4. Safety and security are vital for providing quality tourism. In an effort to make adventure sports safer, the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI)  has formulated a comprehensive document that elucidates on the safety standards for adventure tourism in India. The sole aim of this initiative is to help adventure tour operators understand and execute safety guidelines in a better manner.

5. These guidelines cover land, air and water-based activities which include mountaineering, trekking, bungee jumping, paragliding, kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, river rafting, and many other sports.

6. The information given covers some major areas such as the role of a guide, important equipment required, inspections and maintenance process, operating instructions, risk mitigation, medical safety etc.

7. Detailed guidelines covered in the document focus on safety from every possible angle. It educates tour operators and other concerned agencies about important safety requirements and lesser-known dangers. It also throws light on what constitutes as an adventure activity.

8. In order to put a strong foothold in the field of adventure sports, better safety measures are mandatory. It is imperative that all adventure tourism stakeholders provide better vigilance and strict adherence to these guidelines. Putting emphasis, and implementing and maintaining such avant-garde safety measures are now a necessity.

9. The Ministry of Tourism along with ATOAI and all the tourism stakeholders are committed to India being looked at as one of the best adventure tourism destinations, with a strong safety management system in place.

New Adventure Tourism Guidelines Issued by Indian Government

Adventure sports are definitely one of the most exciting and novel ways of spending an eternal holiday experience. Considering the buzz of adventure sports in India, the Indian government lately issued 29 guidelines in order to promote adventure tourism in India. These guidelines not only to promote tourism but also ensure a better safety and security of the clients participating in those sports.

Guidelines for Bungee Jumping in India:

• As per the new guidelines imposed by the tourism minister, the jumpmaster should be professionally trained and must carry a vast experience in this activity. The same thing goes with the jump staff as well. They all should have an eye on every detail along with possessing a mature and calm attitude. Along with that, jump staff and jumpmasters are required to have a high level of physical fitness, excellent communication, self-discipline, and risk management skills.
• From now on, only the certified equipment will be used in Bungee Jumping that must have produced under a reputed company’s tag. Regular inspection and maintenance should be carried out by the center/institute.
• As per the new guidelines, the activity must be carried out on Australian and New Zealand standards. Also, the bungee jumping site must have SOPs for operations and rescue drill.
• The age to perform bungee jumping is 12-45 years.
• Bungee jumping centers/institutes are required to maintain all the necessary documents which must be presented at the site. These include; safety log, record of equipment, maintenance log, jump log, record of rubber, incident folder, staff training record, first aid kit record, medical record, and a dossier of jumpmaster.
• Safety briefing and audiovisual briefing should be given by the jumpmaster to the jumpers. Jumpmaster should also verify the medical condition of the jumpers, and thus, no compromise to be made in case of any medical problem. Along with that, signs of jumpers should be taken on both disclaimer and fitness certificate.

• All participant are required to undergo basic training course before the tour begins.
• ATV machines must be of a reputed brand and also received a regular maintenance.
• Riders must have to wear all the safety gears which include helmet, face shield or goggles, gloves, footwear, clothing.
• The agency must own ATVs and all the above-mentioned gears.
• For guides, it is recommended to carry spares and first aid kit.
• A detailed emergency procedure must be written which include contact number of the available emergency services.

• Adventure guides must have a basic minimum qualification and the experience.
• For the bikers who prefer to bring their own cycle are required to carry all the necessary equipment and gears with them. However, in the other case, where the agency provides the bikes, the bikers should be delivered fully built and maintained bikes along with the gears.
• Agency should also categorise the biking itinerary along with the grades.
• Regular inspection and maintenance procedure should be carried out by the agency.

• Before the tour, the agency should give a briefing about the rules and trails of mountain biking.

• Like all the land activities, personal light electric vehicle tours also requires qualified guides and instructors to conduct a safe tour.

• These documents include; all permits, licences, contracts, insurances, safety audit record, and statutory documents.

• If a pilot is a foreign national, then he must have a valid FATA issued by DGCA. Along with having a vast experience and knowledge, a pilot is also required to have a medical certificate endorsed by relevant Civil Aviation Authority.
• All the equipment, especially balloons must meet the standards for a safe and secure tour.
• All the balloons must be registered with DGCA and must display their registration number.

What Is an Adventure Tour Guide?

An adventure tour guide is a trained person hired to guide travelers through designated areas while on adventure vacations. These guides may work independently or as part of a tour guide company. The job of an adventure tour guide entails working with small groups of like-minded travelers. Group tours may be scheduled for singles, couples, or families.

In general, tour guides can be hired for a variety of vacations that require the services of a professionally trained guide. An adventure tour may take place in the air, on land or sea. One example of a land tour would be a safari wildlife photography shoot on the Kalahari Desert. By air, breathtaking skydiving adventures might qualify as an adventure tour. Tours at sea could include scuba diving in underwater caves or exploring sunken ships.

Adventure tour guides provide excursions on multiple continents and in numerous countries. Some of the tours specialize in different adventure activities such as hiking, biking, and walking. Tours can also be booked to include a variety of adventures from white-water rafting and kayaking to walking tours of the Serengeti.

Guides have the responsibility of setting up an itinerary for the tour and arranging accommodations, transportation, and dining locations for extended trips. Adventure guides stay at the same location as guests to take care of any issues and keep the group on schedule.

Transportation varies depending on the specifics of each tour. The tour guide and guests are often transported by van or minibus to the designated location. A trailer may be used to transport bicycles, camping gear, or related equipment when applicable.

A seasoned and experienced adventure guide is well versed in the tour’s activity and the history of the location. The guide should be aware of little known places off the beaten track to add to the excitement of the adventure, as well as frequently visited tourist attractions. A prime responsibility of an adventure tour guide is to ensure guests have a memorable vacation.

Qualifications for becoming an adventure tour guide include superior people skills, the ability to multi-task, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Guides must be physically in shape in order to handle long days and physical activity in a variety of environments. CPR and emergency response certification is also required for reputable adventure tour guides.

In 1915, Universal Studios opened to the public in California. In 1964, the film studio introduced the now-iconic tram tours, which eventually inspired the creation of Universal Studios Hollywood, the movie-themed park. And in 1990, Universal Studios Florida opened in Orlando, mirroring Hollywood's attractions. Over the next 30 years, Universal Orlando has continued to expand and now includes two of the world’s most-visited theme parks (the original Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure), Volcano Bay water park, the CityWalk shopping and dining area, eight hotels, and the two groundbreaking Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands, introduced in the 2010s. And the resort isn't done yet. 

This summer, Universal Studios Florida will welcome guests to DreamWorks Land, a new family-focused section featuring a Trolls -themed coaster, a Kung Fu Panda play area, and a Shrek meet-and-greet. And in 2025, the highly anticipated Universal Epic Universe will debut with five immersive lands like Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic. It's bound to be the decade's most significant theme park development. 

Ready to start planning your trip to Universal Orlando Resort? Here’s everything you need to know — from can’t-miss rides to the best places to stay — according to me, Travel + Leisure' s theme park expert and frequent Universal Orlando visitor.

Best Time to Visit 

The best times to visit Florida and its resorts depend on what you want from your vacation. Predictably great weather? Fewer crowds? You can expect the best weather in winter and spring (January to May) before summer's intense heat and humidity (June to September) and the Atlantic hurricane season (June to November). If you want to avoid hordes of tourists, time your trip outside school holidays like spring and winter breaks and summer vacation. Be aware that popular Universal events, like Halloween Horror Nights, can draw crowds of out-of-towners and local annual pass holders alike.

In the past, off-peak months offered a reprieve from the rest of the year’s long lines, but I’ve found that those truly low seasons don’t exist anymore. I've traveled to Florida’s theme parks every month of the year; my favorite times to visit for fewer crowds and pleasant weather are late January through February, early May, and late September to early October. 

Tickets and Annual Passes 

• One-day, one-park tickets to Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure start at $119 for adults.
• One-day, two-park tickets, which allow you to hop between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure throughout the day, start at $174 per day (you’ll need park-to-park tickets to ride the Hogwarts Express).
• One-day Volcano Bay tickets begin at $80.
• Universal Orlando uses a dynamic pricing calendar, so tickets are more expensive on busy days.

Remember, the longer you stay, the more you can save on the average daily ticket price, and Universal Orlando often offers special deals with discounts on multiday vacation packages. 

Express Pass

Universal offers skip-the-line passes for an additional fee (you can get these for free when you stay at select hotels — more on that later). You can purchase these passes in advance when booking your tickets or at the park (if they're still available when you visit). 

• The basic Universal Express Pass ranges from $79.99 to $289.99 per person. It allows you to skip the regular lines once per participating attraction at Universal Studios Florida or Universal Islands of Adventure.
• Universal Express Unlimited — $109.99 to $319.99 per person — allows you to skip the lines for participating rides as often as you'd like.
• A Volcano Bay Express Pass allows you to skip the virtual line once for every participating attraction.

Annual Passes 

Universal Orlando offers two- and three-park annual and seasonal passes, such as the UOAP Seasonal Pass, which provides the most limited access and fewest perks, and the UOAP Premier Pass, which offers no blackout dates, early park admission, discounts, and more. Annual pass holders can also score deals on Universal Orlando vacation packages. 

Universal Studios Florida is a movie-, television-, and entertainment industry-themed park inspired by the original park in Hollywood, and it has several lands influenced by backlot sets (including New York, Hollywood, and San Francisco), plus Minion Land, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley , World Expo, Springfield U.S.A.: Home of the Simpsons, and the upcoming DreamWorks Land. T+L has previously ranked all the Universal Orlando rides and attractions , so here are the highlights. 

Can’t-miss Rides and Attractions

Most guests head straight to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley. With the thrilling Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts ride, Hogwarts Express at King's Cross replica, and Ollivander's wand selection ceremonies, it doesn’t take a spell book to understand why. The Revenge of the Mummy indoor coaster is another highlight, along with the classic, family-friendly E.T. Adventure dark ride.

Right at the entrance, Minion Land is a colorful kids land with a silly motion simulator ride — Despicable Me Minion Mayhem — and a new interactive shooting attraction, Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast. The Simpsons Ride is fun if you're a fan, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is a wild coaster where you choose the soundtrack, and the Men in Black Alien Attack lets you hunt for aliens.

During a recent trip, I stopped to watch Animal Actors on Location, a family-friendly animal show. It was downright delightful to watch adorable dogs, cats, birds, and more follow their “acting” commands. 

Where to Eat

Butterbeer and other British eats make the Leaky Cauldron a must-try in the Wizarding World; Finnegan’s Bar & Grill is a popular drink spot; Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour's butterbeer ice cream is a favorite; and Moe’s Tavern is a fun place for a photo op, with a Duff Beer in hand, of course. And bright and cheery Illumination’s Minion Cafe, a recent addition to Universal Studios Florida, pleasantly surprised me during a recent trip with its tasty salmon and cauliflower bowls, fresh salads, and sandwiches.

Universal Islands of Adventure opened in 1999 as Universal Orlando’s second theme park; today, it has eight themed lands, including the Marvel Super Hero Island, Jurassic Park, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade. While Universal Studios Florida captures the movie magic feel that started it all, Islands of Adventure is more action-packed. If you only have time for one, I recommend visiting this one (but ideally, you’ll get a park-to-park pass, so you don’t have to choose).  

Islands of Adventure is home to the resort’s two best roller coasters: the brilliantly themed Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and the scream-worthy Jurassic World VelociCoaster. Try to rope drop these fantastic rides when the park opens before lines get too long, but if you can't, they're worth the (often lengthy) wait.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey takes you inside Hogwarts and through iconic settings from the films. The Incredible Hulk Coaster is a twisting, turning thrill, and Seuss Landing’s charming Dr. Seuss -themed attractions are ideal for little ones.

Word to the wise: Don’t get on Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges, or Jurassic Park River Adventure unless you're prepared to get drenched (speaking from soggy experience). 

My top Islands of Adventure restaurant, and one of the very best dining establishments at Universal Orlando , is Mythos Restaurant, found in the lesser-visited Lost Continent land. Its fresh, Mediterranean-influenced dishes are a great break from theme park pizza and chicken fingers. I also like to grab a drink at The Backwater Bar (I had a delightful spicy margarita last time I was there), and Three Broomsticks is a classic spot for Harry Potter -inspired eats. Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous recently debuted a new menu in Seuss Landing.

Volcano Bay 

Volcano Bay, Universal Orlando’s tropical-themed water park, opened in 2017 and was the first of its kind built by Universal Creative. I’m not a huge water park person, but that changed once I visited Volcano Bay last year. It’s beautiful, with lots of space to splash and rip-roaring slides. To enhance your day, rent a cabana or premium seats.

Krakatau Aqua Coaster, a fast-paced water ride, plunges your raft up and down a thrilling course, culminating in a final splash. The Honu Ika Moana multi-person raft slides are fun, too, as is the whitewater TeAwa The Fearless River (don’t worry, there’s also a lazy river if you want to relax). More body and tube slides, a wave pool, and kids play areas offer an entire day’s worth of fun in the sun. 

Grab a bite between catching waves and zipping down waterslides at Bambu, The Feasting Frog, and Whakawaiwai Eats. Don’t miss the rainbow soft serve from Koka Poroka Ice Cream Kona. Several bars around the park serve up tropical, fruity cocktails. 

Located just outside Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida, Universal CityWalk, also known as the “Epicenter of Awesome,” offers shopping and dining, plus the new Universal’s Great Movie Escape experience. My favorite CityWalk restaurants are Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food and Cowfish for burgers and sushi, respectively. There’s also a Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, a Hard Rock Cafe, and a Universal Studios Store selling souvenirs. Voodoo Doughnut is a popular stop for a sweet treat either before you hit the parks or on your way out; you’ll notice tons of visitors carrying the iconic light pink boxes. 

Universal Orlando currently has eight resorts operated by Loews Hotels (more to come with the Epic Universe expansion) that fall into four categories based on amenities and perks: Premier, Preferred, Prime Value, and Value. Value hotels cost as low as $99.20 per night, while Premier properties typically start around $350, so there are options within a wide range of budgets.

I’ve stayed at four of the eight resorts, and they all offer outsized perks for their price points. A free Express Pass and easy access to the theme parks make Premier-level hotels worth it, while Prime Value properties offer comfortable, clean rooms and fun themes.

Premier Hotels

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Royal Pacific Resort fall into Universal Orlando’s top-tier resort category, which includes perks like free Universal Express Unlimited passes (so you can skip the lines for participating attractions as much as you want), early park admission, priority seating at select restaurants, and complimentary transportation. I’ve stayed at all three.

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel is typically the most expensive on-property hotel. It's also the best-themed of the bunch, with architecture and decor inspired by Portofino, Italy, like a charming bay filled with little boats. The hotel has three themed pools, a spa, eight restaurants and lounges, and 750 guest rooms. Plus, you can get to the parks via complimentary water taxis, shuttles, and a walking path.

California mission-style Hard Rock Hotel is lively, music-focused, and great for families with teens. It has 650 guest rooms, a 12,000-square-foot pool with underwater speakers, four dining outlets, complimentary water taxis and shuttles, and a short walking path to the theme parks.

Tropically themed Loews Royal Pacific Resort has lush landscaping, several restaurants and lounges, and a lagoon-style pool. This is one of my favorite on-property hotels because it’s typically the least expensive Premier resort, yet it's a fantastic value thanks to the included Express Pass. During a recent stay, I loved that the park was a short walk away (so you don’t have to wait for the bus or water taxi), and I was impressed with the friendly, helpful staff and the beautiful, clean grounds. 

Preferred Hotels

Loews Sapphire Falls Resort is in a category of its own as the sole Preferred-level hotel at Universal Orlando. This 1,000-room resort (also tropically themed) comes with perks like early park entry, complimentary water taxis, shuttle buses, and walking paths to the parks. It also has several on-site dining options and a pool with a beach. 

Prime Value Hotels

Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Aventura Hotel are in Universal Orlando’s Prime Value resort category. Both come with early park entry, shuttle buses, and a walking path to the park entrance (though the walks are longer than others). I stayed at Cabana Bay Beach Resort in September 2023 and was impressed with the clean rooms and spaces (there are more than 2,000 guest rooms and suites), charming mid-century motifs, on-site bowling alley, and large pools. It’s a fantastic choice for families, thanks to plenty of on-property activities, the short walking path to Volcano Bay, and suites that sleep up to six. 

Universal’s Aventura Hotel is a 600-key resort with a pool, modern rooms, and several restaurants and lounges, including a 17th-floor rooftop bar. 

Value Hotels

Universal’s Endless Summer Resort - Surfside Inn and Suites and Universal’s Endless Summer - Dockside Inn and Suites are Universal Orlando’s least expensive accommodation options. The sibling properties still offer early park admission and complimentary transportation to the parks, plus pools, on-site dining, and family suites. Surfside Inn and Suites is a bit smaller, with 750 guest rooms, compared to Dockside’s 2,050 guest rooms.  

Major Events 

Universal Orlando puts on three major annual events each year: Universal Mardi Gras, Halloween Horror Nights, and Holidays at Universal Orlando. 

Universal Mardi Gras 

Universal Mardi Gras typically occurs in winter through early spring, and the over-the-top festival includes New Orleans-inspired parade floats (and yes, they throw beads), live entertainment, and Carnival-influenced eats. The event — which happens across Universal Studios Florida — is included with your theme park admission. 

Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights brings droves of scare-seekers to Universal Studios Florida during select nights throughout the fall. I had the chance to experience the cult-favorite, separately ticketed event for the first time this fall, and despite being a total scaredy-cat, I braved almost all of the 10 immersive haunted houses and scare zones and snacked on some of the themed eats available throughout the park. I would highly recommend the event to anyone who loves a scary movie or even just an immersive attraction (though it’s not recommended for kids under 13 due to depictions of violence, gore, and other frightening images). 

Holidays at Universal Orlando 

Holidays at Universal Orlando is a fantastic way to celebrate the holidays. Think Dr. Seuss -themed Grinchmas at Islands of Adventure and Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s at Universal Studios Florida, which is included with your park ticket. The halls are decked across the theme parks and hotels, and seasonal food and drinks are readily available.

Itinerary Ideas

If you plan to visit the two theme parks and the water park, I recommend spending at least three full days at Universal Orlando (with one day per park). If it fits your budget, book a Premier hotel to take advantage of free Universal Express Unlimited passes so you can skip lines and maximize your time. With an Express Pass, I've been able to ride almost every attraction I've wanted to within two days. However, you may still be able to check most rides off your list if you visit for a few days during a slower time of year.

If you want to squeeze in both parks in one day, I recommend getting a two-park ticket with Express Pass so you can breeze through the attractions that matter most to you. Also, be sure to download the Universal Orlando phone app to easily check ride wait times, entertainment schedules, and restaurant information. 

One Day at Universal Orlando 

For many thrill-loving parkgoers, one perfect day at Universal Orlando might start at Islands of Adventure with Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Ideally, you're staying on the property and can take advantage of the early access hour, as Express Pass won’t work for this attraction.

Next, head to VelociCoaster. From there, bop back over to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and check out the rest of Hogsmeade before circling back around the park and hitting any other attractions on your list. Then, take the Hogwarts Express over to Universal Studios and use your Express Pass to bypass the lines for Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Revenge of the Mummy, and anything else that appeals to you.

Families with small kids might want to rope drop Islands of Adventure's Pteranodon Flyers, a slow-loading kids ride that almost always has a long line. Universal Orlando’s theme parks sometimes close in the afternoon, so once you've seen everything you want to, you might want to head to an early dinner at a CityWalk restaurant. 

Budgeting Tips 

Theme park ticket prices keep increasing, but Universal Orlando offers great deals for travelers hoping to save a few bucks on their Florida vacation. Most special offers come in the form of free tickets and discounts on longer-stay packages; at the time of writing, they currently offer 25 percent off a three-park, five-night vacation package or two days free with a two-day, two-park ticket. Traveling to see Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour in 2024? Luckily, she’s headed to a bunch of badass places that happen to be outdoor-adventure meccas, too. Make the most of your fan-filled trip by adding these must-dos to your itinerary, all synced up with international and domestic dates on The Eras Tour’s 2024 schedule .

My wife and I flew to Chicago last June to see our favorite artist in concert, and had such a good time we almost immediately bought tickets to the next show we could find, which happened to be in Lyon, France, in June. Talking about getting tickets to a Taylor Swift show would take up an entire article on its own—it’s famously difficult and most easily navigated if, like us, you’re a super fan. But, if you are currently holding tickets for a future concert, that’s exciting, since it may be a reason to explore a part of the world you’ve never seen before.

Why Taylor? I was obviously introduced to her music through my wife (and sister-in-law), but it’s hard not to find stuff to like in her catchy, cleverly-written songs about female empowerment. If nothing else, standing in a stadium alongside tens of thousands of young women having the best night of their lives is something that’s hard to walk away from without having a good time.

Eras Tour Paris and Lyon, France

Show Dates: May 9 – 12 (Paris); June 2 and 3 (Lyon)

Flying all the way to Paris just to see Taylor would probably be worth it on its own, but because we’re going there at the nicest time of year, we figure we should make the most of it. So, we’ve booked a few nights at our favorite hotel on Île Saint-Louis, plan to visit my parents at their farm near Limoges, and will then rendezvous with family and friends in Lyon for the concert, plus a few nights of gorging ourselves on that city’s  famous culinary scene. After all that, we’ll be ready for some exercise.

A few years ago, we took the opportunity on a similar trip to visit France’s Écrin National Park, and spent two days backpacking through its high alpine backcountry . There, we slept under a 500-foot waterfall, watched wild ibex and chamois frolic while golden eagles soared overhead, and were positively swarmed by marmots. The best part? We saw zero other people. Compare the park’s 800,000 annual visitors to the 4 million who visit Yellowstone , and you can see why, with a little hiking, it’s not hard to find yourself a slice of the French Alps you can call your own for a night or two. And we’ll return to the park after June’s concert in order to recreate the experience.

If you want to do the same, the easiest way to make it work is by backpacking, and bringing what you would for any high-elevation summer trip . You’ll need to rent a car (either drive from Paris, or take the train to a nearby city), but as compensation for that additional expense, you’ll get to drive in the Alps, which includes some of the most fun and visually stunning roads in the world. (There will be no need to travel off-road, so a small, sporty car is fine.) Leave your nice clothes in the trunk, out of sight, and make sure you throw your passport and wallet into your pack while you camp—vehicle break-ins are a problem at trailheads in Europe, just like they are in America .

We like to stay another night in Paris before we fly out. Since driving in the city is a nightmare, I return the rental car to the airport on our way back into the city, then take the metro (RER) into town. While planning your route, don’t forget how small Europe is. On that same trip, we popped into Italy for lunch after hiking back to the car, and still made it into Paris in time to shower and head to a fancy dinner.

Eras Tour Stockholm, Sweden

Show Dates: May 17-19

If you have tickets to see Taylor in Stockholm this May, you’re making me jealous. Late spring in Sweden is gorgeous. Take advantage of the spring weather by getting on the water. Get Out Kayak will rent you boats and other equipment, or take you on a guided tour of some of the 30,000 islands on the archipelago. Day trips start at under $95-a-person. Like other nordic countries, Sweden has a right to roam law that enables you to explore most wild places, so if you have time, rent camping gear from Get Out too, and enjoy a night under the stars on one of those islands.

Eras Tour Lisbon, Portugal

Show Dates: May 24-25

Portugal’s Atlantic coast is famous for its big waves. Even if you don’t surf, head over to watch people ride the famously huge waves in Nazare. More accessible (read: easier) surf can be found in nearby Coxos. Tours, lessons, and gear are available from Lisbon Surf Connection . A day trip to Nazare costs $60-a-person if you just want to watch, while a rental board and wetsuit can be had for about $38.

Eras Tour Madrid, Spain

Show Dates: May 29-30

It’s going to start getting hot in Madrid in late May. The 125-acre El Retiro park in the city center is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes expansive shaded gardens and a pond you can row boats in.

On the west side of the Manzanares river, you’ll find the even larger, 3,800-acre Casa de Campo. Use the city’s bike share service, Bicimad , and pedal under the pine trees. Rates run just 50 cents per half-hour.

Eras Tour Edinburgh, Scotland

Show Dates: June 7-9

June in the Scottish Highlands may be marked by as much as one or two hours of clear skies. Pack rain gear and hike to the most remote pub in the countr y, which is 18 miles one way. Food at The Old Forge , in the Knoydart Peninsula, is said to be better than is typical in the country, but there’s no accommodations to spend the night. Rather than carry heavy camping gear, we’d rent a room or house in the nearby village . You’ll appreciate having a roof over your head and a place to dry out your socks. Just make sure you book ahead of time.

Eras Tour Liverpool, England

Show Dates: June 13-15

The neatest thing about northwest England is the canals. Built before the advent of rail to connect British industry with ports sailing to America and elsewhere, the canals are now almost-forgotten byways that wind their way through the pastoral English countryside. You can stay on a canal boat in downtown Liverpool  (or plenty of places elsewhere), hike or bike paths that run along them, or rent canoes or kayaks to paddle them starting at under $40-a-day.

Eras Tour Cardiff, Wales

Show Date: June 18

Once there, skip town and make the drive to the Cwm Gwdi trailhead for Pen y Fan, which at 2,910 feet is the tallest peak in the Brecon Beacons. Don’t worry, all road signs are in English, too. The United Kingdom’s Special Air Service famously conducts its selection trials on the mountain, but the 7.5-mile hike to the summit from Cwm Gwdi is much easier than their 22-mile trek. Don’t be fooled by the sub-3,000 foot elevation, terrain on Pen y Fan can be treacherous and Wales isn’t famous for its sunshine.

Eras Tour London, England

Show Dates: June 21-24; August 15-20

Take the tube out to Richmond and walk up the hill to Richmond Park, making sure you walk up the terrace for the views over the Thames. You can hike the park’s 7-mile trail that follows the perimeter while watching the 600 plus head of red and fallow deer that, unlike wildlife in the U.S., belong solely to the King. Head back down to town for a pint at The Prince’s Head , and make sure you entertain the locals with your best Ted Lasso impression.

Eras Tour Dublin, Ireland

Show Dates: June 28-30

Get away from the hokey tourist attractions (think: the Blarney Stone) and drive the two hours   over to Galway on the west coast to hike the Cliffs of Moher. The most popular route runs 12 miles between the scenic villages of Liscannor and Doolin . You know what I’m about to say: pack rain gear and waterproof boots.

Eras Tour Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Show Dates: July 4-6

Rent a stand up paddle board from Canal SUP (from $16-a-day)   and see the city from its most famous attraction. Amsterdam is also famous for its cycling. There’s plenty of places to rent one, or you can take advantage of the city’s bike share program for about $5-a-day.

Eras Tour Zürich, Switzerland

Show Dates: July 9-10

You’ll be 30 miles from the Swiss Alps , some of the most beautiful mountains on earth. Rent a car and drive into them, where virtually any activity is possible. From mountain biking to via ferrata to paragliding, you won’t go wrong. Heck, just driving around is about as good as it gets, too. For a basecamp check out Camping Arolla , the highest campground in the country. There, you can rent accommodation (glamping tents start at $118-a-night) or bring your own tent or camper. Parking spots start under $10-a-night).  

Eras Tour Milan, Italy

Show Dates: July 13-14

Rent a car (or preferably a motorcycle) and drive up to Lake Como. There, take one of the car ferry routes across the lake at sundown. For just a few bucks, you’ll get views Lake Como regular George Clooney might be jealous of. My favorite town on the lake is Mandello del Lario. Home to the world’s oldest motorcycle factory, you can tour Moto Guzzi headquarters , or simply enjoy the town’s working class heritage to enjoy an honest, affordable meal. Bring your hiking shoes and take the 5.6 mile loop up to Alp d’Era for stunning mountain views.

Eras Tour Hamburg, Germany

Show Dates: July 23-24

Taking a rowboat (from $16-an-hour ) across the Alster Lakes is the definitive experience here, but Hamburg is also a great place to cycle. The city’s StadtRAD bike share program is everywhere and costs only 12 Euros per day.

Eras Tour Munich, Germany

Show Dates: July 27-28

Most people visit Munich to drink beer, but you can also do that after hiking. Germany’s highest peak, Zugspitze, stands 9,718 feet tall, and takes most of the day just to climb the 14 miles, let alone descend. A faster option is the cable car (tickets are about $67 per-person), and you can also take a classic cog-wheel train for the same price to the plateau, about halfway up, where many shorter hikes are available.

Eras Tour Warsaw, Poland

Show Dates: August 1-3

Did you know that Warsaw is home to stunning river beaches ? Located on the Vistula river, you can sunbathe, swim, or even enjoy a campfire. And visiting one won’t take you too far from the city’s stunning architecture and many historic castles.

Eras Tour Vienna, Austria

Show Dates: August 9-10

Vienna maintains 14 excellent hiking trails right inside the city. The free Vienna Hiking Passport contains all the maps and information you’ll need, and you can fill it with stamps collected from each route. Earn all 14, and the city will   reward you with a commemorative pin.

Vienna is better known for its many spas . So you can unwind after all those hikes in a thermal pool or with a good massage. Therme Wien is the largest thermal pool in the city, day passes start at $22.

Eras Tour Miami, Florida

Show Dates: October 18-19

October is hurricane season in Florida, so I’d travel armed with backup plans. I’d also take the opportunity to go see the Everglades before they’re destroyed by climate change. There’s all sorts of ways you can do that, from self guided tours of the national park, to guided boat experiences. But if it was me, I’d help out with local conservation efforts by booking a guided python hunt. The species is invasive, and kills just about every native species of wildlife there is, and the hunting season is open year-round. You don’t even need to know how to shoot or hold a hunting license if all you want to do is tag along as locals catch their own. A night with the Python Huntress goes for $1,800 for a group of three. Plus, you’ll get to experience Florida culture at its finest.

Eras Tour New Orleans, Louisiana

Show Dates: October 25-27

Sure, y0u can visit to eat and drink like everyone else does, but New Orleans is another swamp town, and the best way to spend time in that unique environment in a or kayak. A three-hour kayak tour of the bayou can be had for as little as $65 per-person. You can also fish for speckled trout in Lake Ponchartrain on your own; the cooler weather in October starts getting them active. Or, head to the marsh to catch redfish on a fly with a guide for $805-a-day, per-boat.

Eras Tour Indianapolis, Indiana

Show Dates: November 1-3

Indianapolis isn’t exactly a mountain town. So if you want to have an adventure, you’ll need to get creative. Indy Acres offers four different outdoor paintball fields, with both public events and private rentals available. Games are run seven days a week, and start at just $28 per-person, including equipment rental.  Nearby Parke County is also famous for its covered bridges , boasting 31 total. Those would make a great day-long driving tour. Hiking trails are available in Fort Harrison State Park. I’d take the 4-mile Lawrence Creek Trail , which will offer the best odds for solitude. There should be plenty of fall colors left in early November.

Eras Tour Toronto, Canada

Show Dates: November 14-23

Add a few nights to your trip before or after the concert, and head to a cottage on one of the 250,000 lakes   north of the city. It’s the definitive Ontario activity. Fall on the lakes is particularly beautiful, and you’ll be getting dustings of snow by November. Make sure you rent a winterized cabin and pack warm clothes. Look for cabins in Muskoka or Georgian Bay if it’s your first time, those areas enjoy more facilities and services than more rural climes.

Eras Tour Vancouver, Canada

Show Dates: December 6-8

December is stormy in Vancouver. Sure, you could chase some early season snow in the nearby mountains, but I’d head for nearby Vancouver Island, and the many hotels and cabins located on its pacific coast. There, you can take in full might of the ocean, while staying safe inside facilities that run from basic to ultra luxury. The most famous hotel on the island is Wickaninnish Inn, where rooms during storm season start at $400-a-night. I’ve never not seen orcas on the ferry ride over.
