Relaxing day out

Booked on the day trip to Agios Nickolas, Elounda and Spinalonga . We were picked up on time from Malia. Our tour guide Elena as very good with lots of commentary throughout the trip and clear instructions regarding meeting points / times. Got to spend free time in several places . The stop at Spinalonga was very interesting - thought provoking . Had a lovely relaxing day .

altino travel rezensionen

I absolutely recommend this tour. The tour guide, Elena, is very knowledgeable and delivers her talks in English, French and German. Throughout the coach ride to Agios Nikolaos she pointed out areas of interest and facts about the towns we passed through. We were picked up from near the hotel we stayed at. The coach was very clean and had air conditioning. The first part of the tour is Agios Nikolaos, then Elounda, then on to Spinalonga, and finally some time swimming in the sea before the coach ride back to the pick-up location. Do remember your swimwear and towel! We had to buy some in Agios Nikolaos and change on the boat!

I was so impressed with our tour guide - she was so informed & shared with us so many details & history - highly recommend the tour & our tour guide

Booked with Nikoleta. What a fantastic time we had. We booked the day trip to Spinalonga. We were picked up outside the hotel by bus, taken to the boat where we were regaled by Jeanette with interesting facts about the journey and country. We transfered onto a boat and around a 20 min boat ride were on the Island. Here Barbara provided the information on the guided tour. After some time where you can wander around, back to the boat for a trip to a secluded bay, I think called Kolokytha where we were given a fantastic BBQ. I can't thank everyone enough, fantastic, I highly recommend you book. Do it.....

altino travel rezensionen

Overall a tour that we can definitely recommend. It was perfectly organised, pick-up from the hotel, friendly personnel and very modern busses. The programme was not too stuffed and good to digest. However, the tour guide can improve (thus 4/5 stars).

The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly he made sure you knew all the best spots to visit and photo as well trips on what to avoid the island tour was very insightful with plenty of time to look round the island The only negative thing is that on the website itinerary it doesn’t mention a swim stop and this is a must do luckily we were able to get hold of a swimsuit and the water was well worth it overall a great day trip

ALTINO TRAVEL (Malia) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Altino, the first Venice

By francesca bezzone | November 23, 2021

altino travel rezensionen

This year, La Serenissima turned 1600, and she carries her age well. According to tradition and historical sources, Venice was founded in 421 AD: it’s the Chronicon Altinate,  a chronicle dating from the 11th century, that tells us. Of course, as it is easy to imagine, it didn’t all happen in a day. Just like Rome wasn’t built in 24 hours, neither was Venice, and plenty of light still needs to be shed on the vicissitudes and events that brought to the birth of the city. However, historians agree that the urban nucleus we can consider Venice’s forefather still exists, and it’s called Altino.

Altino, or Altinum to say it with the Romans, was an ancient city roughly corresponding to modern Quarto d’Altino, in the Venezia province of Veneto. Altino was favored by its position, straight on the Venetian lagoon and the sea, which made it important for commerce and military maneuvers. Archeological discoveries tell us that the first human settlements there date back to the Paleolithic, that is, the Stone Age , and the Paleoveneti – the Indoeuropean people who occupied this area before the Romans – had already made Altino their main port in the 7th century BC. With the construction of the Via Annia (131 BC), the road connecting Atria (today’s Adria) to Aquileia, Altino became Roman, even though its people had to wait another century before being granted citizenship, a goal achieved between 49 and 42 BC. At its largest, Altino had a population between 20,000 and 30,000, the same as Pompeii.

altino travel rezensionen

Under the Roman Empire, Altino flourished, developing an economy centered on farming, fishing, and sea trade. It was, by all means, a very wealthy town, and beautiful, too, if we trust the aesthetic taste of coeval historians: it isn’t really difficult to believe it, as they tell us of elegant gardens, bridges and porticos, and of a breathtaking view on the lagoon. Just like Venice today.

In a part of the region characterized by marshland, the Romans managed to reclaim vast portions of land to develop Altino, often linking one part of town to the other via bridges, just like it was to happen, some century later, in Venice. With its bridges and boats, Altino must have resembled La Serenissima quite a lot, if not for its architecture, at least for the surreal atmosphere created by the feeling of, quite literally, walking on water. According to Roman historiographers, Altino had a breathtaking town center, and its surroundings were dotted with imposing villas, which had nothing to envy to those of Baiae and Pompeii, sung by Martial and destroyed by Mount Vesuvius.

Altino was, by all means, a rich, well-established city, that based its wealth on activities like trade and farming, both reliable sources of income back in those days. So why did it disappear from history, and why is it considered the “mother” of Venice?

A first theory associated the end of Altino to that of the Roman Empire and, more precisely, to the Barbaric Invasions that had plagued the North-East of Italy since the 2nd century AD. Tired of fending off the enemy – Attila’s Huns in particular –  and seeing their city ransacked, the people of Altino decided to abandon their homes and settle in an area that offered natural protection from invasions, the island of Torcello , in the Venetian lagoon. That Torcello was one of the first Altinian settlements outside their town is demonstrated by a wealth of archaeological findings. However, recent discoveries have changed slightly the inception of this narrative, as it seems the people of Altino weren’t forced to leave their town but decided to move willingly, in an organized, structured, and gradual manner. The town wasn’t abandoned in a rush, but throughout the years, perhaps because of increasing sea levels which made living in Altino more and more difficult.

Whatever is the truth behind the end of Altino, its role in the birth of Venice remains clear, because it was its people who created what is, today, the most famous city in Italy, second only in popularity – one may guess – to our capital, Rome.

altino travel rezensionen

And today, what remains of old Altino?

Well, archaeologists have uncovered streets and some buildings belonging to ancient Altino in the countryside between the northern part of the lagoon and the Parco Regionale del Fiume Sile . While very little is visible to the eye, the use of modern technologies helped investigate the underground and create a map of the old city: Altino, we learn, had a port, defensive walls,  and a water system; a forum, a theatre, and an amphitheater as large as the Arena di Verona , as well as a basilica and thermal baths. A true Roman city, wealthy and beautiful, whose vestiges we can observe today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Altino (MANA).

Altino was abandoned by the Late Antique period, most of its buildings used as a source of stone and marbles to build its younger sister, Venice. If very little physically remains of this town, its aura and its ancient soul live in the canals, palaces, and history of La Serenissima.

Proprio come Venezia oggi.

Make your holiday in our village in Caorle even more beautiful: add to your itinerary a visit to Altino and its national archaeological museum , two must-see places in Veneto rich in history and culture.

RURAL CENTRE OF QUARTO D’ALTINO

Altino, once known as altinum.

Altino (once known as Altinum ) today is incorporated into the municipality of Quarto d’Altino , a small rural centre with just over 3,000 inhabitants. But its history is very ancient.

The first permanent settlements date back to the Bronze Age (15th-13th centuries B.C.) , but it was only around the 5th century B.C. that the city acquired a significant dimension. At that time, the sea bordered it and two of the most important Roman roads passed nearby, the Via Annia , which ran along the Veneto coast to Aquileia, and the Claudia Augusta, which was used to carry trade over the Alps and into Bavaria. The city was therefore a respectable trading centre.

In 452, Altino was destroyed by the Huns led by Attila and its inhabitants fled to the lagoon where they settled, laying the first foundations for the city of Venice. Wherever you are in Altino, looking towards the lagoon, you can recognise the slightly lopsided silhouette of the bell tower of Torcello, the first island inhabited by the fugitives.

NEXT TO THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF ALTINO

The new national archaeological museum.

There are not many remains of ancient Altinum in the area, but a visit to the new National Archaeological Museum is absolutely a must: it houses various decorative elements found in the necropolis, such as the headless statue of Icarus.

There are also several capitals, numerous sundials and a fragment of a frame; several glass artefacts are also remarkable . The museum is open daily and entrance fees are very low.

ALTINO TRAVEL (Malia) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

The Abruzzo and Molise Heritage Society

By Nancy DeSanti

altino travel rezensionen

Province of Chieti, Region of Abruzzo

The small town of Altino is located in the province of Chieti on a rock spur at the foot of Monte Calvario, commanding a scenic view of the valley of the Aventino River. Situated along the Aventino valley, 12 kilometers from Lanciano, Altino rises along a small stream, the Rio Secco, which flows into the Adriatic a few miles away. The valley is richly cultivated with orchards of fruit, grapes and olives.  The town has approximately 3,113 inhabitants, known as Altinesi.

Legend has it that Altino was founded in 452 by Venetian refugees fleeing from Attila , who had burned the Roman military port in Altinum (known today as Quarto d’Altino).  But in fact, the origin of the village dates back to medieval times. The first mention in historical documents dates back to the 12th century. In the Norman era , Altino was a fief of Bohemond I of Antioch .

In the first half of the 15th century Altino belonged to the Lordship of Raimondo Anichino. The Anichino family held the castle until 1534. Later on, perhaps due to the extinction of the family, Altino came under Alvaro de Grado, Giovanni Vincenzo Crispano, the Tovo, Furia and Paolucci families. In 1861 and 1862, Altino was repeatedly attacked by brigands, and many families moved to Casoli and Chieti.

  • Nelle vicinanze Lago Serranella
