Castles, passage tombs, Viking cities – in Ireland, ancient history is all around you

Discover some of the most historical spots in the world as we take a look at ireland's ancient history..

The Hill of Tara, in County Meath.

Ireland's ancient sites prove to be some of the best places in the country to tour.

As a New Yorker born and raised, I’m endlessly surprised when traveling abroad at how significantly I need to recalibrate my sense of what “old” means.  The earliest buildings and streets of my city, which I typically regard with quiet awe, are mere children, built in the 1600s, in comparison with their medieval or even Iron Age counterparts elsewhere around the world.

In Ireland, I’ve felt this especially keenly. Dublin might now be home to the European headquarters of Google and Twitter, but meander away from the Docklands office buildings and you’ll find yourself walking along Fishamble Street – thought to be the oldest street in the city – to Woodquay, the site of a Viking settlement, dating back to the 10th century.

Hop on a 45-minute bus ride out of the city, and you can travel even further back in time to the Neolithic site of Newgrange , the passage tomb complex that’s older than the pyramids of Egypt.

Ireland’s Ancient East – the region encompassing the areas outside of Dublin to the north, west, and south, and east of the River Shannon, reaching from Cavan to Cork City to eastern Limerick – is the part of Ireland where history is the most palpable and accessible. From the very first cities in all of Ireland to ancient castles, ring forts, and monasteries, the Ancient East hums to the tune of 5,000 years of history you can still see and experience for yourself.

Ancient sites to visit in Ireland:

Prehistoric and historic settlements, the seat of Ireland’s High Kings, sites of monastic learning, and more – catch a glimpse of ancient Ireland at these magnificent sites:

Hill of Tara

The Hill of Tara, County Meath.

The Hill of Tara, County Meath.

Less than an hour’s drive outside of Dublin, the Hill of Tara was the seat of Ireland’s ancient High Kings, chosen as a sacred and special site by the early Irish who settled there 6,000 years ago. One hundred and forty-two high kings were crowned there, at the Stone of Destiny, during its years as the seat of power. You can still see and touch it today, in addition to other astounding sections of the Hill of Tara complex, including a megalithic burial tomb known as The Mound of the Hostages, and the ring fort, which served as a royal enclosure called Cormac’s House.

Newgrange, in the Boyne Valley, County Meath.

Newgrange, in the Boyne Valley, County Meath.

A mere half-hour drive from the Hill of Tara is Newgrange, the 5,000-year-old passage tomb ingeniously designed to be illuminated with sunlight each year on the Winter Solstice. Newgrange is the crown jewel of the Boyne Valley area, home to so much of Ireland’s history. Newgrange, built by Stone Age farmers in 3,200 BC, is a stunning feat of ancient engineering and a moving tribute to the dead of a long-gone society.

The Abbey of Kells

In the lovely town of Kells, Co. Meath lies one of Ireland’s most important monastic sites, the Abbey of Kells. Its origin story is that it was originally built in the 6th century by St. Columba, who was given the land by High King Diarmuid Mac Carroll, and then became a place of refuge for monks fleeing Viking raids on the Iona monastery in the 9th century. Ireland’s most famous illuminated manuscript, the Book of Kells , was crafted here by generations of monks.

Glendalough

Glendalough Valley, County Wicklow.

Glendalough Valley, County Wicklow.

An early Medieval monastic settlement in Ireland’s Garden County, Wicklow, Glendalough is one of the most stunningly beautiful sites in all of Ireland. Located in the Wicklow Mountains National Park, the “valley of the two lakes” is home to an ancient monastic city and surviving round tower. The settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 5th century and was re-built throughout the 10th and 12th centuries. Today you can tour what remains of the monastic city, in addition to a visitor center, and take walks and hikes with unparalleled views – all just one hour south of Dublin.

Castles to visit in Ireland:

There are an estimated 30,000 castles and castle ruins in Ireland , from a range of eras in history. Ireland’s Ancient East has some especially spectacular examples which you won’t want to miss.

Trim Castle

Trim Castle, in the Boyne Valley.

Trim Castle, in the Boyne Valley.

Are you a fan of the movie "Braveheart"? Then Trim Castle in Co. Meath is a must-see. The Anglo-Norman castle – the largest Norman castle in all of Ireland – was built over a thirty-year period in the late 12th century by Hugh de Lacy and his family. It sits on the southern bank of the River Boyne, less than an hour’s journey from Dublin.

Slane Castle

Whether you’re looking to go to the best music festival of your life, immerse yourself in a segment of Irish history, or sample some delectable whiskey, Slane Castle has something for you. Just a 25-minute journey from Dublin Airport, Slane is located in the Boyne Valley, just upstream from Newgrange and the site of the Battle of the Boyne. It has been lovingly owned by the Conyngham family since the 18th century. Today you can tour the grounds, attend the world-famous Slane Music Festival, or take a tour of the recently opened Slane Distillery.

Rock of Dunamase

Rock of Dunamase.

Rock of Dunamase.

The Rock of Dunamase stands in Co. Laois, overlooking the Valley of the O’Moores. It is a breathtaking site, and it has seen much history. Dunamase, just outside Portlaoise, began its built history as a Christian settlement which was then raided by Vikings in the mid-800s. It was an Anglo-Normal stronghold and became an important bargaining chip in weddings of the day. Though Dunamase was nearly destroyed during the Cromwellian invasions of the 1600s, visitors can still see what remains, not to mention the same stunning views beheld by any Norman, Viking or medieval Irish ancestors.

Rock of Cashel

Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary.

Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary.

The Rock of Cashel is one of the most iconic castles in all of Ireland. Sitting atop a spectacular hill in Cashel, Co. Tipperary, the Rock of Cashel – also known as Cashel of the Kings and St. Patrick’s Rock – was the seat of the High Kings of Munster. Many of the buildings that still stand today, however, were built in the 12th and 13th centuries, such as the round tower, the cathedral and Cormac’s Chapel. Nearby Cashel town is an excellent jumping-off point for exploring more of lovely Co. Tipperary.

Visit Ireland's oldest cities and towns

Many towns and cities in Ireland date far back into history, but if you want a real sense of just how enduring Ireland’s civilized history is, the Ancient East is the place to explore. After all, Ireland’s oldest city is here.

Waterford City quays. Photo: Tourism Ireland

Waterford City quays. Photo: Tourism Ireland

Waterford was founded by Vikings on the banks of the River Suir in 914. The name comes from the Old Norse Veðrafjǫrðr . The city has seen many iterations throughout its history, from a major Anglo-Norman invasion in the 1100s to Catholic and Protestant influences, to trading with foreign lands such as Newfoundland. Today, this thriving hub still pays homage to its Viking and Middle Ages roots – in particular after celebrating its 1,100th anniversary in 2014. Stroll through Waterford’s Viking Triangle, visit Reginald’s Tower named for the Viking Ragnall, or visit the city’s Medieval Museum to truly immerse yourself. To get in touch with the city’s Viking roots, you can also visit “King of the Vikings,” an exciting 3D virtual reality experience in a recreation of a Viking house in Waterford cities Viking Triangle.

Kilkenny Castle from above. Photo: Tourism Ireland

Kilkenny Castle from above. Photo: Tourism Ireland

Just a 45-minute drive north of Waterford sits one of Ireland’s most important Medieval towns, Kilkenny. Here, the old and the modern meet: tour Kilkenny Castle, built in 1195 by Norman conquerors and still just as grand today, stay in Kyteler’s Inn – the site of Ireland’s first witch trial in 1324, or stop by the world-famous Kilkenny Design for crafts and wares designed by some of Ireland’s most talented contemporary artisans. Get immersed in Kilkenny’s brewing history at Smithwick’s Brewery Experience. The home of the famous ale offers tours that begin with stories of local monks in the year 1231 who found a way to purify contaminated water from the local well by crafting it into the Smithwick’s we love today.

Limerick City.

Limerick City.

Another of Ireland’s Medieval wonders, Limerick City sits on the banks of the River Shannon Estuary, just a half hour’s journey from Shannon Airport. The third-largest city in Ireland, Limerick dates back to Ireland’s pre-Viking era but was destroyed in a conquest in 812. In the 12th century, it was then rebuilt by the Normans who added structures you can still visit today, such as King John’s Castle on King’s Island and St. Mary’s Cathedral. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Limerick underwent many invasions and pillagings in its centuries but has always emerged stronger and with even more character. Most recently, the city developed a rougher reputation in the mid-late 1900s, perhaps best captured by Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes, but swiftly built up its cultural draws and was named Ireland’s first-ever City of Culture in 2014. Today you can explore each era of its history, from King John’s Castle to the Frank McCourt Museum to People’s Park and the Hunt Museum.

Cork city center.

Cork city center.

One of the southernmost points in Ireland’s Ancient East region, Cork City must not be forgotten. This utterly enchanting city on the River Lee was – like so many other places in Ireland – originally a monastic settlement but the groundwork was laid for its cityhood by the Vikings, who saw it as a valuable port city. Cork became known as the Rebel City for its role in the 15th-century War of the Roses, and some residents even refer to it as Ireland’s “real capital.” A university city, Cork offers an abundance of things to do, from its famous annual jazz festival to St. Finbarr’s Cathedral, to the English Market, to the Cork Butter Museum.

(B)= Breakfast, (L)= Lunch, (R)= Reception, (D)= Dinner

Tuesday, August 31, 2021: Depart home Depart the U.S. on independent flights to Dublin.

Wednesday, September 1: Arrive Dublin, Ireland | National Museum of Ireland | Welcome dinner Upon arrival at Dublin Airport (DUB), you will be met and transferred as a group (time TBD) to our hotel. After a light lunch, take a private, guided tour of the National Museum of Ireland with the museum’s former Assistant Keeper, Eamonn (Ned) Kelly. Of particular note in the collections are the Broighter Hoard, Tara Brooch, Ardagh Chalice, Derrynaflan Hoard, and a number of bog bodies. Gather this evening for a welcome talk by our hosts, a reception, and dinner. Overnight at the 4-star Herbert Park Hotel for two nights . (L,R,D)

Thursday, September 2: Dublin: AM walking tour, PM Trinity College Founded as a Viking settlement, the Kingdom of Dublin became Ireland’s principal city following the Norman invasion in the late 12 th century. This morning we take a guided walking tour of the city center, with its narrow, winding streets and mostly 18 th – and 19 th -century Georgian and Victorian architecture, passing key buildings and vistas that help bring the city’s history to life. After lunch (under your own arrangements) we reconvene to visit Trinity College and see the famous 9 th -century Book of Kells that is on exhibit in the 18 th -century library. Before dinner at our hotel this evening, our host will give a lecture on the Irish landscape and history. (B,D)

Friday, September 3: Slieve Gullion, Northern Ireland | Giant’s Ring | Belfast Depart Dublin and start our journey northwards, stopping for a walk to the beautiful Slieve Gullion along the way. Slieve Gullion is a volcanic mountain with a height of 573 meters (1,880 ft). At the summit is a small lake and two Neolithic passage tombs, the highest surviving monuments of this type in Ireland. Slieve Gullion appears in Irish mythology, where it is associated with Fionn mac Cumhaill and Cú Chulainn. After lunch we continue driving northeast to the capital city of Belfast and check-in to our hotel in the heart of the city’s Titanic Quarter. Set out for an afternoon visit to the spectacular Giant’s Ring, a circular enclosure that is 6.9 acres and surrounded by an 11-foot-high, earthwork bank, and then return to Belfast, where we have dinner this evening. Overnight at the 4-star Titanic Hotel Belfast for three nights. (B,L,D)

Saturday, September 4: Carrickfergus | Belfast: Titanic Belfast This morning drive the short distance to the walled medieval town of Carrickfergus. The name of the town translates as ‘rock of Fergus’ and it is believed to have gotten its name from Fergus Mór (Fergus the Great), the legendary king of Dál Riata. Carrickfergus came to prominence as a town shortly after 1170, when Anglo-Norman knight John de Courcy invaded Ulster, established his headquarters in the area and built Carrickfergus Castle. The castle, which is the most prominent landmark of Carrickfergus, is widely known as one of the best-preserved Norman castles in Ireland. Visit the castle and explore the town. Return to our hotel in Belfast and enjoy an independent lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon we walk across the way to the Titanic Belfast, a visitor center at the head of the slipways where the Titanic was built and launched. It features nine interactive galleries focused on the “Titanic Experience,” including a collection of artifacts from the ship itself. Dinner and the evening are at leisure. (B)

Sunday, September 5: Giant’s Causeway | Dunluce Castle | Belfast Travel through the beautiful landscape of the northern coastline to the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising 40,000 basalt polygonal columns that were formed after a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago. After an independent lunch at the visitor’s center we continue on to Dunluce Castle. In the 13 th century, Richard Óg de Burgh, 2 nd Earl of Ulster, built the first castle at Dunluce. The castle has a remarkable and well documented history, falling into various hands over the centuries with links to Scottish clans and the Spanish Armada. We return to Belfast and gather for dinner at our hotel. (B,D)

Monday, September 6: Slane, Ireland: Hill of Slane This morning we head south into the heart of the Boyne Valley. As the antiquarian William Wilde (father of Oscar) said, “the history of Ireland is told in the monuments along the banks of the river valley.” Visit the beautiful village of Slane and enjoy a guided visit to the Hill of Slane, atop which are the ruins of a friary church and college, including a 62-foot-high early Gothic tower. On the Hill’s west side lie the remains of a 12 th -century motte and bailey castle. Check-in to our hotel, a restored, 18 th -century coaching inn in Slane. Before dinner, enjoy a lecture by medieval historian, university professor, and author Dr. Michael Potterton. Overnight at the 3-star Conyngham Arms Hotel for two nights. (B,L,D)

Tuesday, September 7: Brú na Bóinne (Newgrange & Knowth) | Hill of Tara | Boyne Valley Wools | Slane Set out this morning for the UNESCO World Heritage site of Brú na Bóinne and explore the exhibits at the Visitor Centre. Then visit the 4 th -millennium B.C. megalithic passage tombs at Newgrange and Knowth. Newgrange is the largest passage mound in Europe, and encloses an astronomically-aligned, 20-yard-long inner passage leading to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. (The illumination of the passage and chamber at the winter solstice sunrise is world famous.) The Great Mound at Knowth is similar in size to Newgrange and surrounded by 18 smaller satellite mounds; both sites contain the finest megalithic art in Europe. From Brú na Bóinne, we head west to the seat of the High Kings of Ireland, the Hill of Tara. Its Mound of the Hostages (a passage tomb) was constructed ca. 3000-2500 B.C., and in the early Christian period Tara was the political and religious center of Ireland. After lunch at the hill and a walk amidst the monuments, set out for Boyne Valley Wools, a traditional wool craft shop with a flock of Jacob sheep, where one can experience the process of spinning wool. Return to Slane, where dinner and the evening are at leisure. (B,L)

Wednesday, September 8: Trim Castle | Rock of Dunamace | Kilkenny This morning we travel to the medieval town of Trim for a guided tour of the 12 th -century, twenty-sided Trim Castle, Ireland’s largest and best-preserved Anglo-Norman castle. After lunch in the town, we head south to the Rock of Dunamace, which held a significant place in Ireland’s medieval past. Archaeological excavations indicate that the Rock was first settled in the 9 th century when a hill fort was built, and Dunamace came to prominence after the Anglo-Norman invasion in the second half of the 12 th century. From here we drive to Kilkenny City, small and compact enough to explore on foot, yet full of fascinating historical buildings and contemporary shops, design galleries, and restaurants. The evening is at leisure to enjoy dinner and explore the quaint city. Overnight at the 4-star Kilkenny Hibernian Hotel for two nights. (B,L)

Thursday, September 9: Kilkenny: Kilkenny Castle, Medieval Mile Museum | Kells Priory | Kilkenny This morning visit one of Ireland’s most instantly recognized buildings, Kilkenny Castle, built by the Anglo-Normans in the 12 th century (and remodeled in Victorian times), set in extensive parklands. Also explore the excellent Medieval Mile Museum, in the heart of the medieval city. After an independent lunch we reconvene to travel the short distance to the 12 th -century Kells Priory, one of Ireland’s largest medieval monuments. The most impressive features of the Augustinian priory are the tower houses and enclosing walls (of an area just over three acres) that give the priory the appearance more of a fortress than of a monastery. Return to Kilkenny where we enjoy a lecture this evening by Prof. Muiris O’Sullivan, former Chair of Archaeology at University College Dublin. (B,D)

Friday, September 10: Knockroe | Kilmogue portal dolmen | Waterford | Hook Lighthouse | New Ross This morning we visit Knockroe, a lesser-known but highly important Neolithic passage tomb, in the company of Prof. Muiris O’Sullivan who excavated the site. Also visit the impressive Kilmogue portal dolmen (single-chamber megalithic tomb) before continuing on to the Viking town of Waterford, where we visit Reginald’s Tower, the oldest civic building in Ireland (in continuous use for more than 800 years), and its permanent exhibition on the treasures of Viking Waterford. After lunch we continue to the Hook Peninsula, in the southeast corner of Ireland, where we find the Hook Lighthouse, the oldest operational lighthouse in the world (at over 800 years old), in a dramatic setting. End the day with a drive to the town of New Ross, and settle in to our hotel before dinner. Overnight at the 4-star Brandon House Hotel for two nights. (B,L,D)

Saturday, September 11: Ferrycarrig: Irish National Heritage Park, Carrick Ringwork excavation | New Ross Today travel a short distance to the Irish National Heritage Park in Ferrycarrig, a 35-acre, open-air museum that depicts 9,000 years of Irish history, from the prehistoric through Norman periods, and features various structures typical of each period. Enjoy a lunch cooked using a fulacht fiadh (“burnt mound”), a style of open-air cooking place that dates to the Bronze Age. Afterward we visit the “Digging the Lost Town of Carrig Project,” where archaeological research and teaching excavations at the Carrick ringwork are being conducted by the Irish Archaeology Field School. Learn firsthand about the latest discoveries from your host, Stephen Mandal, and his co-director Dr. Denis Shine. Return to New Ross, where dinner and the evening are at leisure. (B,L)

Sunday, September 12: Glendalough | Killiney, Dublin | Farewell dinner Depart New Ross and head north, crossing the Wicklow Mountains to the iconic, 7 th -century monastery at Glendalough, set in a beautiful U-shaped glacial valley at the side of a lake. Visit the wonderful interpretive center and explore the monastery’s ruins. Continue to our hotel in a coastal suburb on the south side of Dublin for a relaxing final night and farewell dinner. Overnight at the 4-star Fitzpatrick Castle Dublin . (B,L,D)

Monday, September 13: Fly home Transfer to Dublin Airport (DUB) for independent flights homeward. (B)

At first sight, Ireland's Ancient East is a tranquil and beautiful land of rolling green hills, charming towns and quiet waters, all framed by the River Shannon and the Irish Sea. Explore Ireland's Ancient East, and you become part of the story.

Living history

There's nothing quite like the feeling you get as you step inside a 5,000-year-old monument. Or the jaw-dropping coastal view from the top of a 13th century lighthouse. But this is what Ireland's Ancient East is all about: experiencing history from the inside out. Ride the waves across to Spike Island in Cork, known as Ireland's Alcatraz, and once the largest prison in the world. Walk in the footsteps of the Vikings through the narrow streets and medieval treasures of Waterford. Or take a moment on top of the mystical Hill of Tara in Meath, dwelling place of the gods. A trip around Ireland's Ancient East brings history to life against a backdrop of unforgettable scenery. It's time to peel back the past...

Irish day tours

08:00 am: DEPART DUBLIN

We meet at the Molly Malone statue on Suffolk Street (the map is linked on our booking page). You will board our comfortable coach, meet your guide and fellow travelers, and then sit back and relax as we head west out of Dublin to our first stop.

08:30 am: HILL OF TARA

The most sacred site of Ancient Ireland is the Hill of Tara, and this is where will be our first stop. An important and historic site in the Boyne Valley region, it was the centre of the country in a sense as the High Kings ruled Ireland from this very site. From the hill, there is a lovely view of the surrounding area. It is said that a quarter of Ireland’s countryside is visible from this hill.

10:00 am: TRIM CASTLE

It wouldn’t be a drive through the Irish countryside without seeing lush and picturesque landscapes. The scenery is breathtaking as we head to the town of Trim, home to an impressive and well-preserved Anglo-Norman castle. Trim Castle is the largest castle of its type in Ireland. With a castle so well preserved and with such stunning grounds, Hollywood would be hard-pressed to find something better! You will have time to explore the sprawling castle and grounds. This is a fantastic photo opportunity. Your guide will give you information in relation to the history of this fascinating castle and the surrounding area.

11:50 am: LOUGHCREW PASSAGE TOMB

Visit Loughcrew which is a cluster of Megalithic Cairns, dating back to 3000 BC. The hills and Tombs are collectively known as Slieve na Galliagh and are the highest point in Co. Meath, affording spectacular views. Sit in the Hags chair and hear fantastic historical and mythical legends surrounding this area. It is a truly impressive site and a unique experience.

3:00 PM: FORE ABBEY

Visitors can view the site where St. Fechin founded a Christian monastery in the 7th Century. It’s believed that before his death, 300 monks lived in the community. Later, the monastery was set on fire 12 times. Among the remains on site, visitors can see St. Fechin’s church, built about 900 AD.

What to expect on this tour

Ireland Tour

We visit inspiring locations where the ancient spirits of each place still reside. In addition, some of you will be returning to the homes of your ancestors. This can raise spiritual and emotional issues. On our tours we seek to build a supportive atmosphere, and your fellow travellers tend to be of a supportive and understanding disposition. At different sites that we visit, you will be given opportunity for reflection and peace. This inner dimension is what makes our tours especially memorable – a pilgrimage and nourishment for the soul.

The pace is not rushed. There are some areas where we climb steps or hills, but otherwise each site is easily accessible and within walking distance from the coach. Nevertheless, you will get some physical exercise!

We reserve the right to vary the itinerary as necessary, to provide the best possible experience under the circumstances prevailing at the time.

Please read the Terms and Conditions for this tour.

Day 1: Arrival & Tour of Dublin

Day 1 itinerary.

On arrival in Dublin Airport, reclaim your baggage and enter the Arrivals Hall. Here, you will meet your Irish tour guide (who is also your driver). There will be three group transfers this morning between 7:00 am and 1200 noon. To ensure a smooth start to your tour, it is advisable to aim for an arrival time in Dublin Airport before 11:00 am, as clearing immigration and reclaiming baggage typically takes around 1 hour.

Board your luxury air-conditioned mini-coach and make the short transfer to the famous Brooks Hotel in the heart of Dublin City , where you can relax and unwind after your flight.

3:00 PM Check-in time. Hotel reception will store your luggage prior to Check-in.

At 2:00 PM this afternoon, after all introductions have been made, you will depart on a tour of Dublin City , Ireland's capital city. Visit EPIC: The Irish Emigration Museum . Voted, recently, as "Europe's Leading Tourist Attraction", this museum tour tells the story behind the millions of people who fled, or were forced from, Ireland over the past three centuries. Located in Dublin's Docklands.

No visit to Dublin would be complete without a visit to Guinness Storehouse . With an address at the world-famous St. James's Gate. Here you will tour the world-renowned brewery and enjoy a perfect complimentary pint of Guinness in the Gravity Bar — located at the top of a glass tower that commands spectacular views of Dublin City .

Evening free to relax and unwind at your leisure. Overnight in the Brooks Hotel .

Included Today

The guinness storehouse, brooks hotel, day 2: clonmacnoise, day 2 itinerary.

This morning after breakfast, you will depart for Ballynahinch Castle .

Ballynahinch Castle is an unrivalled experience of true Irish hospitality. Formerly the home of "Humanity Dick" Martin and The Maharajah Ranjitsinhji, Ballynahinch Castle has been welcoming visitors to Connemara for over 250 years. This unique castle is spectacularly located on a private 450-acre estate of woodlands, rivers and walks in the heart of Connemara .

Travelling west your route today will take you through Ballinasloe & Athlone, which is the centre of Ireland. You will visit Clonmacnoise . A medieval monastery on the banks of the River Shannon, founded by St. Ciaran in the 6th century. Clonmacnoise lay at a crossroads of medieval Ireland, linking all parts of the island. Sacked time and again by the Vikings, it nevertheless flourished for over 600 years.

We will continue west on our journey to Galway City , known as the "City of the Tribes". Today, it is a vibrant bustling harbour town with medieval origins and with a long tradition of Irish language, music, song, and dance.

We will travel on west of Galway City via the villages of Oughterard, Maam Cross & Recess into the wilds of Connemara , famous for its bogs, mountains and rugged coastline. Tonight you will overnight & dine in Ballynahinch Castle . Suggestion: After dinner, you might like to retire to the friendly Fisherman's Pub for a nightcap (Connemara Single Malt Irish Whiskey is just a suggestion) before bed.

Please note, although Ballynahinch Castle has undergone many modernising refurbishments over the past 250 years there are no elevators in the hotel. There is a full porter service, to carry your bags to and from the bedroom, but walking up and down the stairs, for anyone with mobility issues, can be quite difficult. Please, feel free to contact us should you have any such concerns.

  • Evening Dinner

Day 3: Connemara & Kylemore Abbey

Day 3 itinerary.

This morning after breakfast, take some time to explore at your leisure the extensive grounds of Ballynahinch Castle . There are some who visit Ballynahinch Castle and never leave the grounds during their stay, such is the choice of activities available. Hiking the trails, taking a fly-fishing tutorial, playing tennis, biking, or simply sitting in the tranquillity of the grounds listening to the song of the river as it makes its interminable journey to the sea are all possibilities today.

This afternoon, if the lure of the castle grounds is not too strong, you will tour the sights of wild Connemara , famous for its bogs, mountains and rugged coastline. You will have free time in Clifden . Known as the capital of Connemara . It was founded in 1812 by the High Sheriff of Galway to create a "pocket of respectability" within the lawlessness of the area.

You will visit Kylemore Abbey . An historic building nestled at the base of Duchruach Mountain, on the northern shore of Lough Pollacappul — in the heart of the Connemara Mountains. It is regarded as one of Ireland's most romantic buildings.

Your return route to Ballynahinch Castle will take you via the spectacular Inagh Valley, with the rugged 12 Bens of Connemara on your right and the Maumturks mountain range on your left.

Tonight you will overnight and dine in Ballynahinch Castle .

Day 4: Cliffs of Moher & Wild Atlantic Way

Day 4 itinerary.

This morning after breakfast, you will depart for Cahernane House Hotel , situated less than 2 miles from Killarney National Park . The hotel is set in a beautiful mansion dating back to the 1870s and on impeccably manicured grounds.

Your journey will take you down the Wild Atlantic Way on the west coast of Clare via the famous Galway Bay, Dunguaire Castle and the fishing village of Kinvarra. You will see The Burren , which is Gaelic for rocky land—an apt name for this vast limestone plateau. In the 1640s, Cromwell's surveyor described it as "a savage land, yielding neither water enough to drown a man, nor tree to hang him, nor soil enough to bury".

On the Atlantic west coast, you will travel to the Cliffs of Moher . Braced against the ocean, on the coast of County Clare. Here you will stand on the dramatic 702ft (214m) high and 9 miles (14km) long cliffs, a Wild Atlantic Way signature discovery point, to gaze out on the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. Further south in County Limerick, take time to stroll the main street of the beautiful thatched village of Adare before travelling on to Killarney Town .

Tonight you will overnight at Cahernane House Hotel .

  • Cliffs of Moher

Cahernane House Hotel

Day 5: the ring of kerry, day 5 itinerary.

This morning after breakfast, you will set off on the world-famous Ring Of Kerry . It is officially known as the Iveragh Peninsula. You will travel via Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Cahersiveen, Waterville, Coomakesta Pass with its magnificent views over Derrynane, home of Daniel O' Connell, known as "The Liberator", to Caherdaniel. Travel on via the hamlet of Castlecove, the colourful village of Sneem and on via Moll’s Gap, Ladies View, Killarney National Park and along the Lakes of Killarney to Killarney town.

Stop off at the Blind Piper Pub . Here you will have a traditional Irish Pub Lunch . Located in the village of Caherdaniel, locals and visitors alike have been drinking here since 1865. Who is the Blind Piper, you may ask? The Blind Piper is Mici Cumba O'Sullivan, who was born nearby in 1835 and became one of Ireland's most famous pipers.

Continue on via the pretty village of Sneem, Moll's Gap, Ladies View and along the Killarney Lakes to Killarney Town . Tonight you will overnight in the Cahernane House Hotel .

Suggestion: You might like to retire to the Cellar Bar for a nightcap before bed (I would suggest Jameson whiskey from the neighbouring County Cork which you will be visiting tomorrow).

Day 6: Blarney Castle & Midleton Distillery Experience

Day 6 itinerary.

This morning after breakfast, journey west through the "county bounds" via the wild Derrynasaggart Mountains, sometimes referred to as the Cork/Kerry Mountains and made famous in the ballad - "Whiskey in the Jar".

Travel on to the village of Blarney via the valley of the River Lee to visit Blarney Castle . Built on this site in 1446 by Dermot McCarthy. You will have the chance to kiss the legendary Blarney Stone. You will also have an opportunity to shop at Blarney Woollen Mills , boasting a huge selection of Irish arts, crafts and produce.

This afternoon we will visit the Visit Midleton Distillery Experience . You will experience a fully guided tour. Here you will find the world's largest pot still, with a capacity of over 30,000 gallons.

Our destination for tonight is the idyllic location of Faithlegg, County Waterford.

Tonight you will overnight and dine at Faithlegg Hotel . Located in picturesque woodland, offering stunning views over the Suir estuary in County Waterford.

Included today:

Faithlegg hotel, day 7: kilkenny castle & waterford crystal, day 7 itinerary.

Learn the art of glassblowing from the professional craftsmen and take time to visit the store which is home to the largest selection of Waterford Crystal in the world.

We will continue on to Kilkenny for a visit to Kilkenny Castle . This imposing structure dominates the skyline of Kilkenny City. It has been an important site since Strongbow constructed the first building; a wooden tower, in the 12th century. William the Earl Marshall built the first stone castle on the site, in 1260.

This afternoon you will once again be back in Dublin City . Overnight at the famous Brooks Hotel .

  • House of Waterford Crystal

October 2023  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

We recently took the 8 day Ancient Ireland Kerry tour. It was wonderful. This tour gives a great overview and takes you to many beautiful and interesting places. Our tour guide David was funny, accommodating, and informative without being overly chatty. The time provided at the attractions was appropriate. Tour vans were comfortable with everyone having their own window. The hotels are fabulous, particularly Ballynahinch and Faithlegg, and the meals were outstanding. My Ireland Tours communicated well with us over the months leading up to the tour. Be sure to arrive in Dublin a day early so you are ready to really enjoy your first day. I highly recommend this tour and tour company.

Barb Comiskey

My husband and I just returned from the 8 day Ancient Ireland tour and it did not disappoint. Our driver/guide was Colm. He was witty, fun and SO knowledgeable about the history of Ireland all the sights along the way. I strongly recommend myIrelandtours for anyone considering Ireland as their next destination. Thank you Colm

Teresa Schwartz

My husband and I just returned from the My ireland tour, Ancient Dingle, and we had an absolutely grand time! Our guide, Mick Keane, was terrific, the accommodations and meals were wonderful, and the weather,...well, it was irish! We highly recommend this tour group! It was easy to book and they kept us well informed, answering all our questions.

August 2023  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

The tour and accommodations were wonderful. We did the 8-day Dingle Peninsula tour in early July. at that time of year, the sun doesn't set until close to 10pm. Our tour guide, Peter Kelly, was very knowledgeable and a true pleasure. If you mention a particular part of the country you're interested in, let him know. He loves research. Emails were answered promptly by the staff. We were happy we arrived a couple of days early to give us a chance to adjust to the time zone.

July 2023  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

We just returned from the Ancient Ireland Tour (Dingle) with our guide, Harry Fischer. Harry is a gem. He is knowledgeable, personable, and hilarious. He educated us about the history and folklore of Ireland in a wonderfully entertaining way, answering our questions and allowing us the freedom to explore as much of the countryside as we needed. We never felt rushed or warehoused; it was a perfect balance of guided tour vs. independent exploration. Every tour, meal and accommodation was excellent. My Ireland Tour and Harry took care of us and, need I say spoiled us, for any other vacation. (In fact, my husband jokingly asked Harry if he would lead us on every vacation here on out, whether it is in Ireland or not). Thank you for a wonderfully magical experience. It was our first visit to Ireland, but we will return.

June 2023  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

From the very beginning, Keith O'Driscoll, was extraordinarily responsive, helpful and effective and ensured all questions were answered in great detail and all preparations for the tour were ready. We were really amazed by the level of response and help he provided. Thank You Keith! Then there is Harry Fisher; tour guide, historian, professional driver and master of optimization of the whole tour experience. We could write so many accolades about all the little things he did. Suffice it to say – We Love You Harry 😊. We give MyIrelandTour 5 Stars, only because a constellation isn't an option. As to the destinations, 8 days is nowhere near the amount of time you will want to spend seeing this beautiful country and Its kind people. Accommodations - Brooks Hotel is within a short walking distance of so many things that we recommend arriving 2 days early to see Dublin…(Temple Bar, St. Patricks, Trinity College, Christ Church, Dublin Castle, Jennie Johnston and more). Brooks also had air conditioning that was nice for those of us who like a cold room to sleep. The accommodations were truly 4 star plus with 5 star dining experiences. These historical places with beautiful gardens, river, golf course or landscape views were magical. Whether gazing up the stream at Ballynahinch Castle, watching Red Tail deer grazing at The Cahernane House Hotel or sunrise over the golf course at Faithlegg, the views were peaceful and beautiful. Dining, well lets just say we tried a lot of new foods and beverages of which all were exquisite. Destinations were as wonderful and picturesque as google shows them. The only drawback is you will see that you need weeks to really take in all the little hidden jewels that you bypass hitting the more famous stops. If we ever get to go back, we would exclusively want to book with MyIrelandTour and would pray fervently to have Harry as guide again. Harry really set a high bar for others to follow.

Steve Reinert

My wife and I took the Ancient Ireland Mini-Group Tour (Ring of Kerry version) in mid June 2023 (a maximum group of 8 people). Mick, our guide, was outstanding. He knew people at every stop; he was hilarious; obviously loves his country; had great stories; knew back road shortcuts to avoid traffic a couple of times; and even made sure we had air conditioning in one hotel due to the heat that day (only some of the hotel rooms had A/C at that hotel). Mick kept us on pace so that we had time at each planned stop. We left our hotel about 30 minutes sooner than planned one day because Mick found out a couple of large tours planned to be at the Jameson Whiskey distillery at our original planned time so we beat them to the distillery!!! And I highly recommend the Jameson, Ginger Ale, and lime drink on the tour. We could not have asked for more from the tour or Mick. The 8 person van was roomy with panoramic windows so every seat had a good view. The hotels at which we stayed were top notch. Our room at the Faithlegg Hotel near Waterford was the nicest room we have ever had on our travels (overlooking the golf course and gardens). We highly recommend My Ireland Tours.

We completed the Ancient Ireland 6 day tour (Dingle version) and loved it! David, our guide and bus driver, was knowledgeable, had a great sense of humor, and was very efficient in getting us to where we needed to be. Our accommodations were wonderful and conveniently located for free time exploration of the area. Being a small group, we never felt like an entourage descending on a site. While we know that there is so much more to see in Ireland, we feel as if we had a great introduction to this beautiful country. We would definitely recommend My Ireland Tour!

May 2023  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

We took the Ancient Island Tour (Ring of Kerry) tour with a small group of 6 people with Dave Darby as our tour guide and had a great experience. The group was small enough so that we could all have a conversation together making the longer travel times much more enjoyable. The accommodations were far nicer than what I had envisioned and the meals were fantastic. The pace of the tour was perfect as it allowed plenty of time at each stop to explore without feely rushed. Dave was very good about pointing out little things that would probably been missed and was fun and conversational without dominating the time by speaking all of the time. I would highly recommend this tour to friends.

September 2022  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

We just got back from a 7 day tour of Irish Castles, and we had such a wonderful time. Our guide Phillip was truly the highlight of the trip, just a truly fun wonderful person to be around, dedicated to making sure everybody had a good time. We all loved sitting with him at breakfast peppering him with questions about life in Ireland. This tour took us through picturesque landscapes to see cool castles, ride on a boat, tour beautiful walled gardens, taste a bunch of beverages, watch an awesome show, and poke around in all the shops. And I love how Phillip really knew each of these attractions backwards and forwards, and was able to give us the best tips about how to have the best experience. ('OK, so we need to be back at the bus at 2:30. You want to tour the abbey and the chapel, but you might not need to do the hike to the masoleum, you can eat lunch either at the tea house or the main restaurant but the main restaurant has better options...') The food was amazing. Not a meal where I wasn't confused about what fork to use. And my favorite part was waking up early to walk the trails around the hotel, and just soak in the countryside. Absolutely would recommend all my friends and relatives take this tour.

August 2022  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

Absolutely perfect trip! Our driver, David Breen, was so great and knowledgeable! Loved his quick wit! The hotels exceeded our expectations! My favorite was the Cahernane House hotel in Killarney! We did the 8 Day ancient Ireland/ Ring of Kerry small group tour and it was the perfect mix of fun and we received an awesome Ireland education! Trip highlights: Kylemore Abbey (stunning), Waterford Crystal ( so interesting) and Ballynahinch Castle ( beautiful room and dining experience). Would highly recommend My Ireland Tours to everyone!🍀

Doug Bruttomesso

I highly recommend touring with My Ireland Tours. We did the 8 person van, 8 days and 7 nights Ancient Ireland Ring of Kerry tour. Accommodations were above expectations (5 star ) Tour covered 2/3rds of meals and were exceptional (5 Star) Tour guide/drive (David Breen) was very knowledgeable and friendly. Great sense of humor and excellent resource. (I cannot say enough about David) Unlike some tours, this one did not feel like a marathon. We saw a lot, but we also had plenty of down time to explore the little towns/pubs on our own. Everything was well planned and smooth.

Emily Grossi

I have never traveled with a tour before, but I wanted to see a lot of Ireland, knew I'd be traveling alone, and didn't want to have to think too much. So, a tour made sense. In searching for a small group opportunity with excellent lodging, I discovered My Ireland Tour's website and loved the options. I chose the 8-day Ring of Kerry tour and found myself with 7 other women and a remarkable guide, David O'Neill. It was a magnificent, educational, beautiful, fun week. David is a font of knowledge and has a tremendous wit. He is totally organized but never stiff. We packed a ton into our days but also had down time. I almost never felt rushed. I always had fun, was always inspired, and was thrilled to learn so much.

November 2019  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

My husband and I took the 8 person 8-day Dingle tour. Our driver and guide was the lovely David O'Neil. He was wonderful, patient and answered all of our questions. A great driver and a great guide; teaching us all about Irish history, culture and landscapes. The accommodations were wonderful. The food was great. The tours were informative and fun. If you are interested in taking this tour we recommend that you arrive a day or 2 earlier if you need to adjust to the time change. Would book again in a heartbeat. Thanks! June 2019  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

My husband and I absolutely adored the country of Ireland and are anxious to return. Our tour guide, Colm, was both informative and funny throughout the duration of the trip. We never felt rushed at any particular location and enjoyed the freedom to explore local towns and pubs on our own while still receiving advise from Colm. If you want to get a glimpse of the different landscapes of Ireland, I highly recommend the Dingle tour. We look forward to returning to Ireland soon!

We did the Ancient Ireland Dingle Tour and could not have been happier with the quality of this tour. The sites and accommodations were amazing! Our driver-guide, Colm, was very knowledgeable and personable. I would definitely recommend this tour and hope to return to take another tour with My Ireland Tour. I wouldn't visit Ireland any other way!

We did the Ancient Ireland Mini-Group Tour ,Ring of Kerry Version, with lots of add-ons!! Eric O'Gorman designed an amazing 10 night private tour for 8 of us, and it was outstanding! Our guide Oisin was just the nicest and most accommodating person who made everything run perfectly. There were plenty of stops, and the private tour made it easy to design an itinerary that appealed to everyone. All hotels and staff were lovely, Ballynahinch Castle was just unbelievable, and Glasha Farmhouse was beautiful and as comfortable as home. Olive was an amazing hostess and we were sad to leave after just one night. In Dublin, it was also great to have Dervilla show us around, she was so entertaining and knowledgeable! Also, we were glad we added the Aran Island tour. Its such a quiet, pristine, beautiful place. The sun was shining all day and the seals were loving it too! Thank you so much for creating such a magical trip for us to Ireland.

We went on the mini group tour Ring of Kerry version. The tour guide/driver David was wonderful. He knows many things about Ireland that you can't read in any books. David was witty, helpful and the best tour guide we have ever had. David suggested many off the beaten path things to see and we all got to see things not on the itinerary. It was wonderful. The food and accommodations were both very good. The mini group of eight worked out well and we made new friends we hope to keep for a lifetime. I would highly recommend My Ireland Tour. Request David if you go!

Our trip was AMAZING from start to finish! Our tour guide, David Breen, was second to none. He was an excellent driver & a walking/talking encyclopedia of facts about Ireland. There isn't one thing I would change about this trip - the Ancient Ireland Mini Group Tour was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! Thank you!

May 2017  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

My husband and I took the small group tour of Ancient Ireland. There were 6 people total in our group. It was the best decision we made regarding our trip. Our guide, David Breen, was FABULOUS! He shared a wealth of knowledge about each of the areas we visited. He answered all of our questions and was very patient with my husband and me. My husband broke his foot 2 weeks before our trip, so we moved much slower than the other 4 passengers because he had to use crutches and sometimes a cane when walking. The sites that we visited were wonderful. The Brooks Hotel was extremely friendly. Connor, the Concierge, at the Hotel provided a lot of recommendations for dinner, shopping, and other attractions in Dublin. The Ballynahinch Castle was gorgeous. We definitely felt special while staying there. The grounds were beautiful and our room was very comfortable. The food was simply amazing. The Lake Hotel was also beautiful. David arranged for us to go see Celtic Steps while in Killarney. It was fabulous. One of my favorite things to do on the whole trip. There were LOTS of opportunities to shop and find that special 'trinket' to take back home. The coach we traveled in was also very comfortable. It even had WiFi so we could check emails, send texts, or anything else online. There were also charging stations for our devices at each seat. The small group tour was definitely the way to see Ireland instead of the big tour buses. We brought home many ,430, photographs of the beautiful and unique areas we visited. We also brought home a wealth of information that David shared with us through out our trip. If we visit Ireland again, the small group tour with My Ireland Tours is definitely how we will go.

Love, love, love! I am so happy that my husband Justin and I found this tour company. We just got back from the Ancient Ireland tour and all I can say is that it was the very best decision we could have made... We were a bit nervous doing a tour but this 8-person tour was perfect and we are already thinking about returning with family and taking up all 8 seats next time :). We also lucked out with an AMAZING driver, Tom Lavin, and he really made this trip special. He loves Ireland and is so knowledgeable... kind, informative and just a great person.

Oct. 3 2019 was the tour date of Ancient Ireland-Dingle version. I cannot say enough about this tour. To start....our driver Ben O'sullivan was the best. His knowledge of Ireland impeccable as was his singing. Always enjoyed a song or two. He is personable and very accommodating. (Thank you Ben). The tour itself was beautiful. The accommodations breathtaking. We had a small group of 7 which allowed us to become friends fast, and visited places not big-bus friendly. Olive at the farmhouse was so friendly and inviting. All our meals were top notch and even enjoyed a nitecap at a local pub. Over all I would, and have recommended this tour.

16 October 2019  •  Ancient Ireland Tour

All in all I had a good time, with caveats noted below. The staff of My Ireland Tour were always helpful, whether I had questions about a particular tour or needed to add or change a reservation. There were 7 people on my tour, which was Ancient Ireland - Dingle version. There was a married couple, 2 friend-twosomes, and me. I had thought I might feel like a 5th wheel, but never did - everyone was friendly and welcoming. And knew enough to stay away from politics, except once... Ben O'Sullivan, our driver, had a great disposition and was fun to be with. He'd belt out songs, whether we wanted him to, or not, and told stories of The Famine. He never complained about having to carry very heavy, over-packed suitcases. We stayed at 2 particularly wonderful places - the first was Ballynahinch Castle in Galway, and the second was Heaton's Guesthouse in Dingle. The grounds of the first were spectacular, as was the service and food. The owners of the second were particularly gracious and served a wonderful breakfast, as well. Fortunately, we stayed at each for two nights. There were things I would change. Many stops were eye-rollingly touristy, including one with a sign outside saying, “Hold a baby lamb.' For 3 Euros. Several highlighted towns we stopped at, including Galway, were built around tourism, with nearly every store catering to tourists (or students.). So, no fine Irish linens to send home, wonderful bookstores to browse though, etc. Had I known ahead of time how touristy it would be, I might have made reservations to see areas on my own once the tour ended. I would like to have learned more about the history of places we saw, to have a sense of who lived there, where the marauders were, which Irish writers lived nearby or wrote about It.

When I was researching a tour company for Ireland I couldn't find a single negative comment about My Ireland Tour. Now I understand why! I have recently returned from the Ancient Ireland Dingle version tour for 8. From the iconic sites and accommodations to the expert tour guide, we couldn't have asked for more. The pace and variety of site visits was perfect for a first time visitor. Our tour guide Colm blended Irish history and humor with professionalism and charm. The accommodations offered a wonderful blend of experiences and service was outstanding. This was truly a value added experience!

The trip was fantastic! We did the Ancient Ireland Dingle tour and the quality of this trip is top-notch, from sites to accommodations. Our driver-guide was Colm, and he is an absolute asset as a guide. He was great fun. I hope to return to Ireland someday and will absolutely use your tour services again--I wouldn't see Ireland any other way now! Thank you for putting together such quality tours!

My husband and I just came back from The Ancient Ireland 7 day mini group tour and loved it! It was great having only 3 other couples plus our fabulous driver/guide David. The Mercedes Sprinter was comfy and had wifi. We both fell in love with Ireland and the people. Such a beautiful country with so much history. We would highly recommend using My Ireland Tours for anyone wanting a personal touch but very much a professional company.

What a fabulous 7 day Ancient Ireland Mini-Group Tour, made even better by our tour guide, Harry Fisher. He was so knowledgeable, fun, interesting - he engaged with our group of 7 so well - a true Irish gentleman we had the pleasure to spend this week with. Everything on this tour was top notch - the accommodations ,a castle, 2 hotels and a .farmhouse., were fabulous, the coach with our own individual seats was extremely comfortable and provided great viewing windows, the itinerary was busy enough yet relaxing, and the tours fun and interesting. Would definitely use My Ireland Tours again and hopefully have Harry Fisher again as our guide!
