2024 Dubai Championships ATP Draw With Medvedev, Rublev, Murray & More
by Nurein Ahmed
24/02/2024 12:03
The stars of men's tennis will light up the Middle East swing as the Dubai Championships take center stage from February 26th to March 2nd.
The draw for this ATP 500 tournament was recently released, in which all 32 men competing in the main draw learned the identity of their first-round opponents and routes to the title. The event is led by World No. 4 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev .
The Russian is making his return to competition since departing Melbourne with a runner-up trophy. Medvedev will also have an additional coach in his corner after hiring former World No. 6 Gilles Simon . The top seed has a tricky opener against new Kazakh national Alexander Shevchenko .
Jakub Mensik's spectacular run to his maiden ATP final in Doha has earned him a spot in the main draw of Dubai as a special exemption entrant. The Czech teenager will face Borna Coric .
Shelton Among Three Carbon Tracker Leaders Supporting ATP's Sustainability Initiative
India's Sumit Nagal is enjoying a career-best year, and it is only February. He is one of three wild cards and plays Lorenzo Sonego in his opener. The winner of this clash will most likely meet Medvedev in the second round.
There is an interesting first-round battle in the top half, pitting Ugo Humbert and Gael Monfils . The two Frenchmen crossed paths in Doha, where Monfils won in straight sets. Fifth-seeded Humbert will have revenge on his mind.
Andy Murray 's terrible start to 2024 could have another low. He has been handed a tough opening match against Canadian left-hander Denis Shapovalov . Third seed Hubert Hurkacz plays Jan-Lennard Struff in a match that will likely feature at least double-digit aces.
In the bottom half, former champion Andrey Rublev will look to bounce back from his shocking defeat in Doha. The World No. 5 takes on Zhizhen Zhang to begin his campaign. In-form Alexander Bublik will play a qualifier.
Abedallah Shelbayh is a wild card entrant and will receive the lion's share of support from Arab fans. The Jordanian will face Tallon Griekspoor . The winner of that match will likely meet Bublik in the second round.
There is a Doha rematch between Karen Khachanov and Alexei Popyrin in the first round. Sixth seed Adrian Mannarino will play Botic van de Zandschulp . The entire draw can be seen down below.

Three former men’s champions set to return to Dubai
Botic Van De Zandschulp of The Netherlands and Andrey Rublev of Russia during ATP Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship, Dubai, UAE, Thursday, 2nd March, 2023.
Reigning champion Daniil Medvedev and 2022 winner Andrey Rublev will both be competing at the emirate’s annual ATP 500 event from February 26 to March 2
Three-time grand slam champion andy murray, who won the tournament in 2017, will make his eighth appearance at the dubai duty free tennis stadium, dubai’s women’s event, recently awarded permanent wta 1000 status, will—as is tradition—run one week prior to atp event, from february 18 to 24.
Dubai, UAE – February 1, 2024: The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will welcome three former champions for the ATP 500 tournament later this month, with reigning champion Daniil Medvedev—a recent Australian Open finalist—and 2022 winner Andrey Rublev set to be joined in the emirate by Andy Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion and Olympic gold medalist.
Medvedev will have his eye on more success in Dubai, with Italian sensation Jannik Sinner stunning the Russian with an epic five-set comeback win to clinch his first Grand Slam in Melbourne last month. Medvedev, 27, will be looking to build on a remarkable 2023 season, where he won five titles, reached two Grand Slam finals, and ended the year as world No. 3.
Rublev, meanwhile, reached the 50-wins mark for the third straight season in 2023, while breaking new ground by claiming his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte-Carlo. The 26-year-old also lifted the Bastad trophy with a straight sets victory over Casper Ruud, the third time in four years that he has claimed multiple tour-level crowns.
It is two years since Murray’s last appearance in Dubai and seven since he became the first Briton to win Dubai’s annual tennis showpiece. He will join three of the world’s top 10 ATP players when the tournament’s 32nd edition takes place from February 26 to March 2.
Murray, the Scotland-born three-time Grand Slam winner, is set to make his eighth appearance at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, with world No. 8 Hubert Hurkacz, the 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist, also part of the experienced line-up.
“We are thrilled to have three former champions in Andy, Andrey, and Daniil participating, further underlining the regard in which this tournament is held,” said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free.
Other notable names who will feature in the men’s tournament include last year’s Australian Open semi-finalist and current world No. 18 Karen Kachanov, five-time ATP Tour singles title winner Adrian Mannarino, currently ranked No. 17 in the world, and former Wimbledon finalist and Australian Open semi-finalist Milos Raonic.
Salah Tahlak, Joint COO of Dubai Duty Free and Tournament Director of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, added: “We’re delighted to welcome Andy, Andrey, and Daniil back to Dubai this year. They are all extremely popular figures among the tennis fraternity, so having these type of players competing in the tournament is great news for us.”
Meanwhile, a star-studded WTA line up will see 17 of the world’s top 20 players descend upon Dubai for the 24 th edition of the WTA Tour tournament—recently awarded permanent WTA 1000 status.
Nine of the world’s top 10 female players will be in the emirate for the latest instalment of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, fresh from securing her second successive Australian Open crown, and world No. 3 Coco Gauff lead the impressive pack.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

ATP Dubai draw: On course for another Rublev v Medvedev final
The ATP Dubai draw is packed full of star power – here we break down some potential routes to the final for some of the biggest names
Three former champions feature in the draw as the ATP Tour heads to Dubai next week.
Defending champion Daniil Medvedev, 2022 winner Andrey Rublev, and 2017 champion Andy Murray are all looking to add to their tally as the action gets under way.
In last year’s final, good friends Medvedev and Rublev faced off, with the former world No 1 enjoying a decisive win, 6-2, 6-2, in a match that lasted only 68 minutes.
Here we take a look at the first-round draw and potential routes to the final for some of the big names.
Daniil Medvedev’s route to the final
Daniil Medvedev will begin the defence of his Dubai title with a first-round match against Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan.
The Russian has not played since his loss in the Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner, and heads to Dubai with Frenchman Gilles Simon newly appointed to his team .
Potential opponents
- Round of 16: Lorenzo Sonego
- Quarter-final: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
- Semi-final: Hubert Hurkacz
- Final: Andrey Rublev
Andrey Rublev’s route to the final
Andrey Rublev, last year’s runner-up, starts off against Zhang Zhizhen in the first round. The 2022 Dubai champion lost to rising star Jakub Mensik in the Qatar quarter-final – having made the last eight of every tournament he’s competed in thus far this year. ( And, of course, he triumphed at UTS Oslo .)
- Round of 16: Lorenzo Musetti
- Quarter-final: Adrian Mannarino, Sebastian Korda
- Semi-final: Karen Khachanov, Alexander Bublik
- Final: Daniil Medvedev, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Hubert Hurkacz’s route to the final
Hubert Hurkacz is the tournament’s third seed and will begin with a tough opponent in Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff. It doesn’t get much easier from there with his potential opponents. Still, he’s used to difficult draws in Dubai – he came up against Novak Djokovic in last year’s quarter-final.
- Round of 16: Christopher O’Connell
- Quarter-final: Denis Shapovalov, Andy Murray, Gael Monfils, Ugo Humbert
- Semi-final: Daniil Medvedev, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
- Final: Alexander Bublik, Karen Khachanov, Andrey Rublev
Karen Khachanov’s route to the final
Fourth seed Karen Khachanov heads to Dubai after a great week in Doha, but he is another one with a tricky draw ahead of him, beginning with an opener against Alexei Popyrin.
- Round of 16: Jiri Lehecka
- Quarter-final: Alexander Bublik
- Semi-final: Andrey Rublev
- Final: Daniil Medvedev
Andy Murray’s route to the final
Andy Murray, who got his first win of the year in Doha, plays world No 10 Denis Shapovalov in the first round. Should he enjoy some progress through the draw, he could face Jakub Mensik in the semi-final – the young man who knocked him out in Qatar.
- Round of 16: Ugo Humbert
- Quarter-final: Hubert Hurkacz
- Semi-final: Daniil Medvedev, Jakub Mensik, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
- Final: Andrey Rublev, Alexander Bublik

ATP Champions Tour Format
Traditionally, the Champions Tour consisted of around ten tournaments worldwide, with a year-ending “Champions Tennis” event held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
However, after the pandemic disrupted the tour for almost two years, the events have become less frequent, with only four events being played in 2022 in Delray Beach, Hurlingham, Brasil and London.
It’s also tricky for fans to follow, with little promotion, coverage or live scoring, and currently, there is no dedicated website for the Champions Tour.
Champions Tour events are typically played over four days, with eight-man fields competing against each other in a round-robin format, ensuring that all players feature in at least three matches.
Like the ATP Finals, the players are split into two groups of four. But rather than semi-finals, the top player from each group contests the final, while the two players who finish second in each group play for third and fourth places, respectively.
The Champions Tour does have prize money , but individual pay is not usually disclosed, with events displaying a headline figure, often in the 1 million dollar or 1 million euro ballpark.
2023 Champions Tour Schedule
The following Champions Tour events are scheduled for 2023:
The Season Ending Champions Tour in London
Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall was the season-ending finale to the ATP Champions Tour. The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK’s most treasured venues and first opened in 1871; interestingly, Champions Tennis was the only annual sporting event to take place at the Royal Albert Hall.
Over the years, Champions Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall welcomed a host of the biggest names and personalities on the ATP Champions Tour to play competitively in both singles and entertaining doubles matches, with Mansour Bahrami often taking to the court with his trick shots and comic timing.
The event has also boasted legends such as John McEnroe, Pat Rafter, Goran Ivanisevic debutantes Andy Roddick and Fernando Gonzalez, and Tim Henman. Tennis was played there for the last time in 2021.
ATP Legends Cup
Alongside the Champions Tour, a separate Legends Cup was also played in 2022. This is a team competition series among tennis players that have been ranked top 20 in the world and are above the age of 33.
The Top 12 Group founded the Cup in Sweden in collaboration with the ATP and ATP Champions Tour.
In 2022, there were three events, and the plan for the future is eight competitions yearly, with the last competition each year being a grand finale.
The format is a three-day event (1 session each day); in each session, three matches are played – two singles and one doubles.
No player can play singles more than once daily, and at least three of the four players must play singles and doubles. No doubles combination is played more than once unless for the Decider on Day 3 if points are 9:9
The scoring is a pro Set to 8 games and a 10 points match tie break 8 (with a 2 points margin).
Points won for a match win differ per day:
- Day 1: 1 point per win in each match
- Day 2: 2 points per win in each match
- Day 3: 3 points per win in each match
The winning team must reach 10 points. In the event of a tie, after all, nine matches are played, a final doubles Match Tie break to 10 points will be played to decide the winner.
So you could say it’s a bit like the Laver Cup!

Andy Murray is back in action against Denis Shapovalov at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Monday not before 12pm UK time ; watch over 80 tournaments a year, including the US Open, exclusively live on Sky Sports Tennis

Andy Murray may have snapped his six-match losing streak but his future has come under further scrutiny after he lost in the second round of the Qatar Open last week.
Murray has repeatedly said he is not about to retire after a horror run of form, but the fierce competitor inside him will not be able to put up with too many more defeats like that against 18-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik - at one point he appeared to shout to his team: "This game is not for me any more".
Murray, whose first-round win over Alexandre Muller was his first victory since October, was beaten in a gruelling encounter which lasted over three hours last week.

The Scot will consider Mensik an opponent he should not be losing to, especially has he had already won eight games on the ATP Tour by the time the Czech was born, so what's next for Murray and when can we expect to see him on Sky Sports Tennis?
The 36-year-old, who is playing with a metal hip, has faced questions about his future but he replied last week by saying: "I can do whatever I want.

Having now slipped 16 spots to 66th in the ATP live rankings, but given there is a 96-man draw at many of the Masters 1000 events, the Brit will be fine for a direct entry for now.

Murray takes on Shapovalov at Dubai Tennis Championships
Murray's name is among the field at the ATP 500 tournament held from February 26 - March 2.
The 2017 champion will open his campaign against Denis Shapovalov, who has used his protected ranking to get into the main draw.
Shapovalov is currently ranked No 121 following an injury-ravaged 2023 season, but the Canadian is a former world No 10 and will no doubt pose a difficult opponent for Murray.
Should Murray win his second match of the year, he'll face either fifth seed Ugo Humbert or Gael Monfils in the second round.

A whole host of top names will feature including defending champion Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Hubert Hurkacz, Karen Khachanov and Adrian Mannarino.
Indian Wells, Arizona and Miami
After that all eyes will be on the 'Sunshine Double' with Indian Wells being the first of nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments from March 6-17.
Two-time Olympic champion Murray will make his 16th appearance in Tennis Paradise and he will be joined by five-time winner Novak Djokovic, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz, three-time champion Rafael Nadal, Jannik Sinner and Medvedev.

Unless three-time Grand Slam winner Murray is still in the draw by the second week in the desert, he has given himself the added insurance of more hardcourt tennis by entering the Arizona Classic on the ATP Challenger Tour, which runs from March 11-17.
The players then head to the Miami Open at Hard Rock Stadium - home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins - from March 20-31.
Murray is a two-time champion in Miami having won the title in 2009 (against Djokovic) and 2013 (David Ferrer).

Will Murray play on clay?
The Scot has not given any indication whether he will play on the dirt with the fear it could put too much pressure on his metal hip, although he did participate in Monte Carlo last year.
Of his 46 career singles titles, only three have come on clay. Two of those have been Masters, though, with wins in Madrid (2015) and Rome (2016).
He has also been a French Open finalist but lost out in 2016 to Djokovic.
Murray could go and play a series of Challenger events during Madrid and Rome and then the possibility of returning to the grass at Surbiton June 2-9 as he begins his preparation for Wimbledon in July.
