San Diego Open ATP 250 Set to Return to Barnes Tennis Center, September 17-25, 2022

San Diego Among Five U.S. Cities to Host ATP and WTA Tour Events This Year

SAN DIEGO – ( July 21, 2022 ) – Men’s professional tennis is coming back to San Diego. Tournament officials have announced that the 2022 San Diego Open ATP 250 tournament will be played September 17-25 at Barnes Tennis Center, 4490 W Point Loma Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107.

After last year’s highly-attended inaugural tournament, which had sold-out crowds for the final four days of the event, Tournament Director Ryan Redondo and tournament partner Southern California Tennis Association Foundation, worked with the ATP to bring the tournament back to San Diego in 2022.

“It feels great to bring the San Diego Open ATP 250 back to Barnes Tennis Center and give sports fans the opportunity to watch men’s professional tennis at its highest level,” said Redondo, who also serves as CEO and General Manager of Youth Tennis San Diego / Barnes Tennis Center.

“With our men’s ATP Tour 250 tournament taking place in September and the women’s WTA Tour 500 event scheduled for October 8-16, it is unprecedented. Never before in the history of San Diego sports has something like this been accomplished,” Redondo added.

The 2022 San Diego Open ATP 250 tournament will feature a 28-player singles main draw and a 16-team doubles draw. The event offers a total of $612,000 in prize money and tournament champions will receive 250 Pepperstone ATP ranking points.

The City of San Diego will become the fifth city in the United States to host ATP Tour and WTA Tour tournaments in 2022, joining Indian Wells, Calif., Miami, Cincinnati and Washington.

Andrea Gaudenzi, ATP Chairman, said: “As a global sport we continue to manage the impacts of the pandemic. Event cancellations are an unfortunate reality, and we wish our affected tournament members and fans well. At the same time, it’s incredibly encouraging to have many great cities like San Diego step up to host ATP Tour tennis this season.

“This shows the strong international interest in our product and validates the agile approach we’ve taken in responding to fast-changing circumstances. We would like to thank all stakeholders involved in this process and look forward to an exciting second half of the season.”

Main draw matches will begin Monday, September 19. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, September 25 with the singles and doubles championships. There will also be a 16-player qualifying draw with qualifying rounds scheduled on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18. Four qualifiers will advance to the main draw.

According to tournament officials, additional event information regarding ticket sales, ball kids, volunteer opportunities and the player field will be announced in the coming weeks prior to September’s tournament.

“The Southern California Tennis Association Foundation is proud to bring the ATP Tour to San Diego this September. It will complement the San Diego Open WTA 500 event in October and provide inspiration for the youth of San Diego,” said Linda Milan, SCTA Foundation Executive Director.

“The Foundation’s mission is to provide equal tennis opportunities to young players, regardless of  age, gender, ability or economic background. Having professional tennis players from all over the world competing in San Diego demonstrates this and will fuel our kids’ desire to succeed,” Milan said.

Casper Ruud of Norway captured the men’s singles title at last year’s inaugural San Diego Open ATP 250 with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory over Cameron Norrie of Great Britain. In the men’s doubles championship, Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury of Great Britain scored a thrilling 7-6 (2), 3-6, 10-5 victory over Filip Polasek of Slovakia and John Peers of Australia.

"Clay specialist born?";"Too good" - Coco Gauff, Boris Becker, Zizou Bergs & others congratulate Ben Shelton on winning 2nd ATP title in Houston

C oco Gauff, Boris Becker, Zizou Bergs and several other tennis players extended their congratulations to Ben Shelton for winning his second ATP title in Houston.

Shelton defeated defending champion Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 16 minutes to win the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston. Shelton, 21, became the youngest champion at the ATP 250 tournament since Andy Roddick achieved the feat at 19 in 2002. His father, former World No. 55 Bryan, also won the title in Houston back in 1992.

This victory on clay was Shelton's first title on the surface and his second tour-level trophy. His first tour-level title came at the Japan Open last year when he defeated Aslan Karatsev 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match.

After his win over Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton took to social media to share a series of photos, including one where he is seen kissing the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship trophy and another featuring him with his father celebrating the win.

"H-town=Title town. Thanks @mensclaycourt," Shelton captioned his Instagram post.

Numerous tennis players commented on Shelton's post to congratulate the 21-year-old. Coco Gauff , Zizou Bergs and Ashlyn Krueger all extended their best wishes.

Diego Schwartzman asked if a clay court specialist was taking shape. Asia Muhammad congratulated the "Shelton fam" for the victory while Coco Gauff wrote "Okayyy" with a fire emoji.

German tennis legend Boris Becker took to social media to share an image of Ben Shelton and Bryan standing in front of a board displaying the names of past winners of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship. In the picture, Ben can be seen pointing towards Bryan's name, who won the same title as his son back in 1992.

Becker stated that the World No. 14 winning the ATP 250 tournament was a "great achievement" and recalled playing against Bryan a few times.

"Great achievement! I did play your father few times..." Becker captioned his Instagram post.

Ben Shelton to Frances Tiafoe after his win in Houston: "You've been an inspiration to kids, people of colour in our sport"

The championship match between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe at the 2024 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston was a historic one. It marked the first-ever all-African American men's final to be played in the Open Era.

Following his win over Tiafoe, Shelton congratulated and praised Tiafoe for his performances throughout the week in the ATP 250 tournament during the trophy ceremony.

Shelton also expressed his commiserations for Tiafoe, acknowledging the disappointment the former World No. 10 must be feeling for not being able to defend his Houston title. He wished Tiafoe the best of luck in bouncing back and potentially defending his title at the Stuttgart Open later this year.

"Great week Foe. Great job to you and your team. I know this one stings, sorry you didn't go back-to-back titles, but you're that type of player who can go back to back. I want to see you do it again this year, hopefully in Stuttgart," Ben Shelton said.

Ben Shelton also thanked Frances Tiafoe for serving as an inspiration to Black children and people of color everywhere.

"You've been such an inspiration to kids, people of colour in our sport, just an amazing representation. You've been that guy to always put on for us and always be selfless, thinking about others, kids younger than you. So thanks for everything that you do for our sport and people who look like you and me," he added.
