UST Mamiya ATTAS 11 Shaft Review

Ust mamiya attas 11 shaft.

The UST Mamiya ATTAS shaft line has been no stranger to success both on Tour and with the general golfing public.  2020 will add a new version to the lineup with the introduction of the UST Mamiya ATTAS 11.  The ATTAS 11 has a mid-high launch profile with smooth feel and plenty of performance thanks to a constant taper and M40X carbon fiber.

Looks 4

UST Mamiya stuck with the recent theme of bright colors from the ATTAS lineup in the new ATTAS 11.  The distinct orange/white/black color scheme can’t be missed and makes quite a statement.   Personally, I think the ATTAS 11 looks pretty sharp and there’s a lot of detail when you look closely.  Mixed into the orange “grid pattern” (for lack of a better term) are small UST Mamiya logos that only jump out upon close inspection.

Feel 11

How Does it Feel?

The major addition UST Mamiya focuses on in the ATTAS 11 is the use of M40X carbon fiber.  This M40X carbon fiber mixed with the constant taper of the shaft have a great effect on its feel.  Let me back up a little bit here.  Often times, these mid-high launch shafts tend to feel a little “noodley” and are prone to too much “action” throughout the swing.  By using this specific M40X carbon fiber, UST Mamiya was able to make the shaft a lot stronger and tighter while still keeping life in the shaft.  Pair that with that constant taper I’ve mentioned and you have a shaft that has a smooth flex profile with plenty of release through the ball .

Typically a shaft with this kind of profile is a nightmare for me.  With the ATTAS 11, I was pleasantly surprised.  I could take my usual aggressive swing and didn’t feel like the shaft was out of control due to the reasons described above.  The ATTAS 11 felt plenty stable but there was a smooth release at impact.  UST did a great job blending the flex point if you prefer a more gradual kick from your woods.

On-Course Performance

Every now and then when we’re testing shafts, the data just says “yep, this does exactly what it says on the box.”  I’ve noticed that I have this experience quite a bit with UST Mamiya shafts.  That’s certainly what happened with ATTAS 11.  I threw the shaft in my gamer , teed the ball up, and just swung away.  My first shot felt great, the shaft responded beautifully, and the ball had a nice mid flight right on its target.  This process would repeat itself, albeit with some variance in launch angle, time and time again.  I quickly came to the conclusion that the ATTAS 11 was easy to launch and the dispersion was extremely impressive .

While my average launch angle came in at a nice medium 13.2º, I often got the ball higher as well.  Sometimes as high as 15º.  As my launch went up, so did my spin.  To be fair, that’s more on me taking a steeper angle into the ball and not so much the shaft.  As you can see, I also had a mid spin average to go with my mid launch so as long as I can be consistently in that range, I’m in great shape.

I need to emphasize the control of the ATTAS 11 was extremely impressive.  That M40X carbon fiber really keeps the shaft under control allowing you to swing away and maintain a tight shot dispersion.   This was very much a noticeable factor for me and really my biggest takeaway from my testing.

Final Thoughts – UST Mamiya ATTAS 11 Shaft

If you’re a player that’s looking to get a high-performance shaft with stability and a bit more launch, the UST Mamiya ATTAS 11 is a strong contender.  I believe the ATTAS 11 is a shaft where it’s extremely important to get dialed in with the exact correct specs if you want to realize all of the benefits.  (You can find a UST Mamiya TSPX fitter here .)  The ATTAS 11’s constant taper profile and M40X carbon fiber create a strong blend of optimal feel and control that make it a high performer in the UST Mamiya shaft lineup.

WRX Spotlight Review: UST Mamiya Attas 11 shaft

attas tour iron 110

Product: UST Mamiya Attas 11 shaft

Pitch: From UST : “A revolutionary combination of innovative shaft design and advanced carbon fiber materials. We combined aerospace grade M40X Carbon Fiber with a new constant taper design. Designed for a higher launch, high performance shaft offering optimum flex and torque characteristics with feel. The ATTAS line has been a successful staple in UST’s offerings, and with the introduction of ATTAS 11 or “Jack,” this will be no exception. Designed to improve launch, but keep the stability the line is known for, this rendition enhances the line with better materials, better energy transfer, and an unforgettable feeling swing experience.”

Our take on the 2020 UST Mamiya Attas 11 shaft

I was provided the Attas 11 6S weighing in at a raw weight of 66 grams, 3.8 degrees of torque, and profile promoting mid-spin with a mid to high launch. This shaft was placed in a Wilson Staff Cortex head playing 11 degrees with the weights in the neutral position and the sliding weight in the middle front location. The shaft was placed up against another UST offering: the Helium, which is a shaft that has been very popular and notable for its lightweight, but super stable design. I was also able to hit it against the Fujikura Atmos Blue Tour Spec 6S.

On course testing went right along with claims from UST. I experienced a good mid flight with notable lower spin than the Helium. The Attas 11 felt much stiffer than the Helium but not in a negative way. After a few rounds with “Jack,” I was impressed with the consistency I was getting in flight, control, and distance. My miss was predictable and controllable, whereas I have been having more of a two-way miss with the lighter Helium.

Review-UST Mamiya Attas 11 shaft

During an analysis at David Ayers’ Low Country Custom Golf with fitter and club guru Kristian Barker, we discussed shaft profiles and recorded some numbers to see how they compared. The first round was very subpar in terms of swing and after a round with all the shafts and a little guidance from Kristian, the second round was much better. I was very happy to be able to have a testing day where I can see how the equipment performed with bad and good swings.

ust-mamiya-attas-11-review

The Helium was the distance winner, but even though the offline number portrays better accuracy, I was having my typical two-way miss with both left and right big misses. The “Jack,” while a little shorter, gave me a consistent ball flight that was more likened to how I hit when I’m playing well. Also, though the Helium was a bit longer, that can easily be attributed to the fact that it is much lighter, and after the session, I measured it at 45.5 inches playing length whereas I had the Attas 11 cut to 45.

Overall, the Attas 11 is certainly a premium shaft that caters to those who would like a little higher launch without worrying about the spin getting too high or feeling overly stiff. On course and the launch monitor, this shaft performs and is every bit of what UST has marketed it to be in terms of launch, spin, and feel.

Shaft Review: UST Mamiya’s ATTAS International Series

attas tour iron 110

Orange you glad I didn't say 'banana ball'? The stylin' ATTAS International Series driver shaft, in all its sunshiney glory.

Sure, there’s a lifetime of costly high-tech R & D packed into that Otherplanetarium-faced, monster truck-sized, multi-adjusting, slicing, dicing, chopping and mulching driver head of yours. But consider instead, for a moment, the shaft — the place where every micro-measurement of swing force is stored, amplified to the Nth degree and then released at the precise moment when it’s needed most in order to propel a golf ball the farthest possible distance in more or less the correct direction, on a perfect trajectory with just the right amount of curvature, to boot.

A tall order, to be sure. Now, quick – what kind of shaft do you have in your driver? If that sound I hear is chirping crickets and tumbleweeds blowing through your rec room, it may be time to give your shaft (the one in your driver, smarty) more than just a passing thought.

If you are a discriminating single-handicapper who’s always looking for a leg up, and find yourself engaged in an ongoing search for the perfect shaft that would rival Henry Jones’s effort to find the Holy Grail, here’s a word worth Googling: ATTAS . Go ahead and do that now, and it should bring you back here.

Done? Good. Let’s get on with it.

ATTAS: it’s a Japanese word that means “brilliant,” according to manufacturer UST Mamiya , and it’s certainly apt in terms of the bright orange, white and black colour scheme that distinguishes the ATTAS International Series shaft from all the other clubs in the bag. Colour, in fact, has always been a UST Mamiya calling card; the unmistakable tri-tone look of the popular Proforce shaft was preceded 10 years ago by  the striking yellow and blue of the 65 series, one of the most popular shafts of its era.

The shaft, which currently carries a MSRP of $350 US, was introduced in North America late in 2009, and is being matched this week with a sequel of sorts, the T2, which claimed a professional victory this past June at the Asian Tour’s Queen’s Cup in the hands of Japan’s Tetsuji Hiratsuka.

“This was only the second week that the ATTAS T2 was in play professionally, so we are very happy to already have a win under our belt,” UST chief operating officer Gene Simpson said in a statement.

UST Mamiya says the ATTAS series is engineered with ultra-thin carbon fibers to deliver “smooth-bending properties” through a constant taper design that allows more energy to be transferred to the ball without distorting the shaft’s shape. That means, in a nutshell, more distance with greater accuracy through more consistent performance.

For woods, there are five IS shafts available, numbered 5 through 9 and suitable for swing speeds from as slow as 70 miles per hour (5), all the way up to more than 125 MPH (9). I’ve been field testing a stiff 6 in a TaylorMade R9 TP on the ‘Neutral’ setting with 9.5 degrees of loft and a 12-ounce slug in the rear weight port.

Since the shaft was standing in for the R9’s standard-issue X-flex Fujikura Motore, it initially waggled with a lot more softness than expected. It also seemed looser than the Proforce, which I know fairly well through several previous drivers and a couple of current hybrids. But that’s not overly surprising from a high-launch, low-spin shaft, which tends to have a softer tip section in order to deliver higher ball speed and a steeper trajectory.

As an aggressive driver of the ball with a swing speed that’s probably higher than average, the ATTAS very quickly settled itself into my comfort zone. Right away I noticed a decidedly higher, more penetrating ball flight than I’d seen with previous Proforce shafts, with a marked (but not mind-blowing) increase in distance. Given the chance to try the 7 or the 8, or perhaps the 6 in an X flex, I would expect to see even more distance gains. But for the slightly above-average golfer, say someone with a handicap in the range of 10 to 15, the 5 or the 6 would seem to be an excellent fit.

attas tour iron 110

UST Mamiya is also in the grip business, producing some high-calibre alternatives to the pricier mainstream manufacturers. The Pro DC is a half-cord 'homage' to Golf Pride's New Decade MultiCompound.

Like its Proforce predecessors, the ATTAS gives no grief in the workability department either, despite its low-spin design. I consistently find it easy to shape the ball in either direction without any appreciable sacrifice in trajectory or distance. Compared with the harsher, less forgiving X-flex Motore, the ATTAS felt decidedly more stable, smooth and controlled, despite the obvious difference in stiffness.

When it comes to allowing golfers to get better, shafts are something of a double-edged sword. In an era of easy interchangability, there is a much wider selection out there, with greater availability than in past years. Given the number of manufacturers now who make drivers with detachable heads, it ought to be a lot easier than it is to test out different shaft and head combinations.

Your best bet is to attend a fitting session with your fave manufacturer — Titleist, TaylorMade and Callaway all offer extensive fitting sessions, a wide network of fitting facilities across Canada and an excellent selection of shaft and head combinations — and get your fitter to give you generic specs on your swing that will enable you to make a more informed decision. It’s very likely that in your session, you’ll encounter a shaft that fits you well.

Make note of its specifications, and what you like about it, then go do your own legwork. That way, you can mitigate the risk factor involved with buying a high-end shaft that you might not be able to test extensively beforehand.

When that time comes, the ATTAS is a terrific combination of premium performance and playability that would prove well-suited to a wide range of swings, and is well worth a look for anyone planning to give the shaft the respect it deserves, get out of the realm of off-the-rack offerings and enter the rewarding world of high-performance golf.

UST MAMIYA ATTAS ELEMENTS

If you have been following the PGA Tour photographs on the forums, you no doubt have seen the latest addition to the UST Mamiya product line, the ATTAS Elements. It's been seen in the bags of some of the best players in the world. This is the fourth generation in the ATTAS cadre of shafts. I have been following it's coverage closely since the 2012 PGA show in Orlando this past January. Since the show, I have been eager to put it to the test in my personal ATTAS progression in the driver. Without question, the best shaft I have played to date has been the ATTAS T2 6s which is currently installed in a Callaway FT-9. I wanted to select an ATTAS Elements that would be a natural transition from the ATTAS T2.

The ATTAS Elements is offered in three Tour SPX profiles, the DK (Dynamic Kick/Highest Launch), the RK (Radical Kick/mid launch), and the MK (Macho Kick/lowest launch). Though research and development, UST Mamiya has determined that mid flex stability is the most important feature in a golf shaft. UST Mamiya conducted two years of R & D isolating the benefits of mid flex stability and developed the ATTAS Elements profiles to enhance performance, reduce dispersion, and increase ball speed over their previous offerings. This combined with the torque optimization technology (prevalent in the popular VTS line) produced a shaft with optimum torque, maximum control, and speed. The incorporation of mid flex stability reduces drooping to maintain acceleration forces at impact, eliminated loft, spin, and face angle distortions, and redistributes torque through the shaft to maximize head speed.

I ordered the ATTAS Elements in the DK flex profile in 6s. The color scheme on the ATTAS Elements is my favorite to date. I am looking to pair this with a RAZR Fit adaptor, for install in my RAZR Fit driver. I hope you enjoy the photographs, I am really looking forward to testing this on course.

I have my Peepz looking for me a pull. Zinger, I'm sure you know who that's in reference to. LOL. I'm eagerly wanting to try this one, as the buzz around it is phenominal. Lots of people have been getting really good numbers with it. I almost pulled the trigger on the T3 then saw this one was coming soon(back then), so I opted to wait. Now, I'm waiting on the shaft.

Dynamic Kick, Radical Kick, and Macho Kick? With the color scheme and the naming for different flex profiles I'm thinking this was almost designed to be a perfect match for the RocketBallz. Lol All joking aside, I'm really looking forward to hearing more about these and how it works out for you.

They are not flex profiles, the flex designations are the standard, S, X, etc... The color scheme would be perfect for the RBZ line though, no doubt!

I am not 100% sure I know who you are referring too! Anyway, thanks, I am eager to see how this performs as well. It's almost like ATTAS meets VTS!   Do you know of a place to get NEW OEM RAZR Fit adapters?

Well, the guy you don't know who I'm talking about had some. Don't remember the price. I think those at Golfworks are aftermarket. Maybe try iheartburners?

Yeah, I think the ones on Golf Works are aftermarket. I don't think Callaway is going to make the authentic ones readily available.

Thanks for the info guys, I will check it out.

I've very intrested myself. Looking at a 17* super hybrid with an Attas to replace my 5 wood.

Amazing! I really like the idea of the Attas shafts, but it's quite a bit out of my budget. Has anyone compared the hybrid to the Altus hybrid?

I had a chance to get two of the installs complete, but will not be able to hit them until this weekend. Those look wonderful, Spy! Did you tip them accordingly for stiff flex (in reference to the 6.0 scale you gave)?

I had them done at Totally Driven in Oakdale, Minnesota. I did not get a chance to ask the builder what he tipped them at to get them to 6.0. He'll usually send me an email with all the specs.

I have played a few of the UST Shafts and have had excellent performance with all of them. The Axiv Core Black was a nice shaft but for me the best shaft I have ever played is the UST V2 HL. Had it in a hybrid and now in my 4 wood and it just flat out performs higher end shafts I have played. Looking forward to trying this Attas shafts maybe in my Driver or Hybrids eventually.
I had an ATTAS 85H in my 17 degree 909H, and then switched to the Altus Hybrid shaft (which is something like 90 or 92 grams?). I love the Altus, and I love the ATTAS (especially in the driver), but it wasn't the right shaft in the 2 hybrid. Very low spin, not a particularly high ball flight (barely on the cusp of medium, I'd say). I think it'd be great in a 21 degree or even a 24. I also felt it to be much more stout feeling compared to their wood shafts. Altus is the jam.

I agree - sometimes a little spin is a good thing, and low spin in a hybrid might not be the best unless I really start hitting more down on the ball.. Sounds great for a driver/3 wood though!

Well, I have heard that UST Mamiya is working on prototype testing the ATTAS 2 on tour very soon if not already. I hear it's supposed to be a smoother feeling version of the ATTAS.

Great boring trajectory and decent distance. I was toe for toe with three of my playing partners drivers today. I stupidly got rid of the 7s last year without even hiting it and am now wanting to hit the 6s in my driver. Great feeling shaft that feels well balanced and gives me the confidence to just swing normal and let the club do the work for me. Its my banker club off the tee on most par 4s at the moment as i'm struggling with the Dymatch S3-70 RT in the SuprtTri. Even thought its a RT (responsive tip) i'm still only getting s mid ball flight. Anyone want to do a swap for my Dymatch for an ATTAS 6s?

The Review: I was so happy with the results and feel of the AXIV Core that I wanted to give the ATTAS series a run. I will use this thread to detail my progress with the ATTAS line of shafts. I am really looking forward to testing these shafts! The first install is going to be the ATTAS HB 100, which is going into one of the new Diablo Edge Tour Hybrids. From UST Mamiya: The first shaft produced out of this merger is the UST Mamiya ATTAS-International Series. According to UST Mamiya, the ATTAS incorporates Four-Axis Technology incorporating an exclusive proprietary process of weaving specific high modulus carbon fibers in the critical four-axis directions necessary in shaft design. UST Mamiya explains this optimizes stiffness, hoop strength, and torsional resistance, all in a single ply. The AXIV material positioned within the butt section of the shaft resists deformation allowing the shaft to maintain consistent symmetry for a solid stable feel in your hands. The ATTAS has a stiffer profile in the mid section for control while maintaining a responsive, feel-enhancing tip section to increase ball speed. UST Mamiya developed each ATTAS shaft to balance the performance characteristics and optimize a player’s distance/control ration no matter their swing tempo. I had a chance to put some extensive time in this past week with the ATTAS shafts. I had the builds completed at Totally Driven Golf in Oakdale, Minnesota. Like usual with Totally Driven, the builds were perfect. As noted above, I had them installed in the following heads: Adams Golf RPM Redline 2080 (Tour Prototype) 16.5* Actual Loft UST Mamiya ATTAS 7s (6.0) 42.25” Swingweight D3 Grip UST Mamiya Comp SC (2wraps) Callaway Golf Diablo Edge Tour Hybrid 21* UST Mamiya ATTAS 100s HB (6.0) 39” Swingweight D3 Grip UST Mamiya Comp SC (2wraps) After first picking up the clubs and taking a few waggles in my yard at home, I noticed the shafts seemed to feel a little more stout than the shafts I had previously installed. The three tone graphic combination on these shafts is definitely eye catching. It’s neat to see the actual materials used in the construction of the shaft in the opaque area towards the butt end of the shaft. My first swings with the new clubs occurred on the driving range for a practice session before playing 18. The first thing I noticed about 7s was the launch and spin characteristics. In the previous shaft that was installed in this club, the flight of the ball would start off low to the ground, the rise drastically before dropping out of the sky. With the ATTAS 7s, I immediately noticed a considerable difference in launch characteristics during the initial flight of the ball. The flight penetrated through the air more like the flight pattern of a drive at what I would describe as a medium trajectory. Through impact, the shaft remains considerably stable and does not have that exaggerated kick feel through the hitting zone. Where I really noticed the stability of the ATTAS 7 was out of the rough. The shaft seemed to maintain its stability as I blasted out of the second cut of rough, almost with an iron like feel and consistency. The results were evident in the dispersion of shots. The shafts feel like point and shoot shafts you would expect from your irons, but with the characteristics and benefits of exotic graphite. Despite the noted stability, the shaft still feels surprisingly smooth. This noted benefit became increasingly apparent in the Diablo Edge Hybrid. It is the first time I have had experience with anything over 85 grams in the hybrid. I have to be honest, it really felt different at first, but after hitting it, I realized it was a feeling I could get used to pretty fast. All of the noted benefits of the ATTAS 7 were realized in 100g HB shaft, and then some. The purpose of this hybrid in the bag is to truly replace my 3 iron. This is why I had the total length built at 39”, with a 100g shaft and the swing weight at D3. I did not want the club to play like a 7 wood. I want it to fly the distance of a 3 iron with the trajectory of a fairway wood. With the ATTAS 100 HB, it does just that. It really does feel like I am hitting an iron. Again, like in the ATTAS 7, the stability of the ATTAS 100 is just amazing especially though the rough with iron-like dispersion results. The flight off the hybrid is a penetrating high trajectory. The feel really inspires confidence over the ball. The UST Mamiya grip colors match their shaft colors perfectly. The Comp SC grip I had installed was the sleeper surprise of the project for sure. They feel as good if not better than their comparable products from other bands at a significantly lower price point. For the price, there is not reason not to use these grips.

That's wonderful! I really enjoyed the review. So, you really like the performance in the FW? It sure seems like something that would be right up my alley for a 3 wood (the 8, that is).

Well, I have heard that UST Mamiya is working on prototype testing the ATTAS 2 on tour very soon if not already. Boy, that sounds amazing. How does the Attas feel in comparison to the Axivcore Black, if anyone's tried it?

I just put an Attas 7x in my 909 D3 i am impressed it is very smooth and stout. I just feel more confident to control the ball flight with this shaft over my previous shafts ( both the voodoo and BB) my driver just feels alive now and i can take a cut with confidence that i know this shaft will preform every time.

  1. Shaft Review

The bit of extra backspin from the ATTAS helps the ball hold a straighter line. Using the requisite language of the shaft world, UST Mamiya describes The ATTAS as a mid launch/mid spin offering. To see how it compares to the previous ATTAS as well as other similar shafts on the market, we turn to Cool Clubs and the S3 shaft database.

  2. UST Mamiya ATTAS 11 Shaft Review
