2. Bibi Ka Maqbara

Bibi Ka Maqbara is a replica of the famous love symbol Taj Mahal and is one of the most historical places to visit in Aurangabad. Looked after by the Archeological Survey of India, this mausoleum was built by Prince Azam Shah, who was Aurangzeb’s son, in memory of his beloved mother Begum Rabia Durani. Called Mini Taj, this tomb will leave you awestruck with its exquisite marbles adorned up to the dado level. These marbles are said to be brought from the mines of Jaipur. As per the inscription laid on the main entrance, Bibi Ka Maqbara was erected by Ata-ullah and Hanspat Rai, two famous architects of the Mughal Empire. The mausoleum is erected on a square platform and is embraced by four minarets at its corners. There is also a mosque in and an archaeological museum just behind making it one of the best tourist places in Aurangabad.

26. Zainuddin Shirzai’s Maqbara – An Historic Affair

1. Ajanta Caves

The name of Aurangabad is synonymous to the Ajanta Caves. Dating back to the 2nd Century, these clusters of caves consist of 30 caves. These Buddhist caves are dedicated to both Hinayana and Mahayana sect of Buddhism. Presenting a brilliant architectural style, these caves are divided into various sections, each serving a different purpose, like staying, praying, studying, etc. Each cave has murals, intricate carvings and paintings, depicting various mythological tales and the life of that era.

Cave 1 to Cave 12, represent Mahayana philosophy of Buddhism. They were excavated during the 5th and 8th centuries. Excavated from the 7th to 10th century, Cave 13 to Cave 29 are associated with Hindu philosophy. Cave 16 is the revered Kailasa temple. Caves 30 to 34 present a glimpse into Jainism religion. 3. Bibi Ka Maqbara

If you think Taj Mahal is the only monument built by a king for his wife, then plan a visit to Bibi Ka Maqbara. This captivating mausoleum was built in 1661 by the Emperor Aurangzeb, in the memory of his wife Rabia- Ul – Daurani, also known with the name of Dilras Banu Begum. She died in 1657.

Often called the Taj of the Deccan, this monument has striking resemblance to the Taj Mahal of Agra . With majestic mountains in its backdrop, this marble Maqbara with intricate carvings, is undeniably one of the most appealing buildings in the city. 4. Grishneshwar Temple

One of the 12 jyotirlingas in India, Grishneshwar Temple is located in the Verul village and less than 1 km from Ellora Caves. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is believed to be the smallest of all the jyotirlingas.

Built with Volcanic rocks, this temple has a South Indian architectural style. It has five tiered shikara with a golden kalasha on the top. The walls of the temple are carved with artistically complex designs and sculptures of deities. There is an antarala, garbhagriha, and a sabha mandapa within the temple complex.

There are many legends associated with its origin, each showcasing the glory of Lord Shiva and his love towards his devotees. It is said that this temple was destroyed in the 13th century during Mughal rule. It was then first reconstructed in the 16th century by the grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Maloji Raje Bhosale. It was later restored in the 18th century by Maratha Queen Rani Ahilyabhai Holkar.

5. Daulatabad Fort

First built by Yadava King Bhillama in 1187, Daultabad Fort underwent many restorations and improvisations during varied reigns like Mughal rule or Ahmednagar Sultanate. Also known as Deogiri Fort, this majestic fort is located on a hill in the Daulatabad village.

Known for its exceptional defence system, it was almost impossible to penetrate this fort. Its fortified walls, massive gates with iron spikes, walkways, moats, bastions and turrets created a strong shield around.

Constructed on a conical granite rock formation, Daultabad Fort also showcases detailed town planning, water management system, architecture and military system. Some of the prominent structures in this fort are Saraswati Bawdi, Bharat Mata Mandir, Rang Mahal, Chand Minar, Chinni Mahal and Baradari. It is open from 9 AM to 6 PM on all days of the week.

6. Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum

Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum is another place one must visit to know about the glory of Maratha kings. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Consisting of 6 halls, it displays photographs, ancient weaponry like sword shields, rifles, including a 500 year old war suit, coins, artefacts such as 400 year old Paithani sari.

It also has a handwritten Quran, which belonged to Emperor Aurangzeb. It is located close to other attractions like Himayat Bagh and Salim Ali Sarovar and is only 5 km away from Aurangabad railway station. This museum opens for visitors from 10.30 AM to 5 PM.

7. Salim Ali Lake

Situated in Chhatrapati Nagar, near the Delhi Gate, Salim Ali Lake is opposite Himayat Bagh. Earlier known as Khiziri Talab, during the Mughal rule, it was later renamed after the birdman of India, the renowned ornithologist and naturalist Salim Ali.

There is also a small bird sanctuary at the lake, where you can spot many migratory birds, especially in winter months. The facility of boating is also available here. Near the lake, you will find a beautifully laid out garden, maintained by the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation. An ideal site for walking, one can visit this lake from 8 in morning till 6 in evening. Shimmering waters of the lake, surrounded by rich flora, makes this place scenic.

8. Pitalkhora Caves

Another fine display of rock cut architecture of ancient India are the Pitalkhora Caves. This group of 14 Buddhist caves dates back to the 3rd century. Associated with the Satavahana Dynasty, these can be divided into two types, Chaityas and Viharas.

Also known as Brazen Glen, these caves are built out of 14 rock formations, each displaying paintings and extraordinary carvings of animals, motifs and mythological stories. Once here, you will find life like stone sculptures in and around the caves. They are quite similar to those you find in Sanchi Caves (Madhya Pradesh), Karla caves (Lonavala) and Pandavleni Caves (Nashik). These caves are not maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. They are open from 9 AM to 5 PM. To reach the caves, one has to trek for a few metres.

9. Bhadra Maruti Temple

Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Bhadra Maruti Temple is an important religious site in Aurangabad. Located in Khuldabad, at a distance of only 4 km from Ellora Caves, this temple is one among the three unique temples of India where the main deity is in a sleeping position (Bhav Samadhi).

As per the legend, the ruler of Khuldabad, King Bhadrasen used to sing hymns in praise of Lord Rama. He was an ardent devotee. Once Lord Hanuman, impressed by his devotion, came near him and slept while listening to his songs. It is believed to be the reason why the idol is in a resting position.

10. Siddharth Garden and Zoo

Siddharth Garden and Zoo offers visitors a refreshing break in nature and at the same time it promises excitement of watching and observing wild animals from a close proximity. Popular among families, it is also frequented by walkers and nature lovers. Its beautiful landscape, dotted with colorful flowers and trees and a musical fountain makes it a good location to spend a few hours.

Some of the wild animals that you can spot at the zoo are tigers, lions, leopards, hyenas, civet cats, foxes, deer, snakes, and crocodiles. There is also an aquarium here. 11. Himayat Bagh

Spread over an area of 400 acres, Himayat Bagh was built by the emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century. This garden was built when the northern wall of the Aurangzeb’s Palace, Kila-e-Ark, was dampened by the waters of Khizri Talao/Salim Ali Lake. To halt the damping and potential damage to the palace, the area was filled and converted into fields, which eventually led to the creation of Himayat Bagh.

Featuring rare species of plants and trees, which have been laid out in breathtaking manners, this garden is worth exploring when in Aurangabad. Barra Darri, built by Ivaz Khan, also deserves special attention from every visitor.

Himayat Bagh can be visited from 9 AM to 6 PM on all days of the week. It is situated at Rauza Bagh, near the Delhi Gate of Aurangabad.

12. Aurangabad caves

Although lesser known than Ellora and Ajanta Caves, these caves have similar historical importance. Built with rock-cut style, Aurangabad caves are a cluster of 12 Buddhist caves. Dating back to 6th -7th century, these monolithic caves showcase extensive architectural brilliance with massive pillars, meticulous carvings like Mahayana art work, Hinayana style stupa, and sculptures.

In these caves, one can find carvings of Vajrayana goddesses, even of Hindu Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesha. The Cave 7, with its detailed representation of Bodhisattva and Avalokitesvara, stands out the most, while Cave 9, showcases Lord Buddha in a state of nirvana.

These caves are located a few kilometres away from Bibi Ka Maqbara and Sonehri Mahal. They are open from 9 AM to 5 PM for tourists. They are presently maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

13. Jayakwadi Dam

Built across the Godavari River, Jayakwadi Dam is one of the largest irrigation projects of the state. Jayakwadi Dam allures its visitors with the best of scenic beauty.

Dnyaneshwar Udyan, located here, has been built in the style of Mysore’s Brindavan Gardens . This expansive garden greets everyone with its musical fountains, vibrant flower beds, and spacious lawns. It also has a swimming pool, nursery and a children’s play area. Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary with more than 200 different species of birds further adds to its charm. A few minutes away from the sanctuary is the Nath Sagar Lake, bestowed with lush greenery and rich aquatic life.

14. Kailasanatha temple

Largest rock cut temples in the world, Kailashanatha temple, also known as Kailasha temple is a must visit in Aurangabad. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple stands majestically in the Cave 16 of the Ellora Caves. 300 feet in length and 175 feet in width, this massive temple is one of the most exceptional religious shrines in the country. It is said that this ancient temple was built from top to bottom by carving out the massive basalt rock formation.

For several centuries, this temple has been captivating visitors with its incomparable architecture and intricate carvings. Major part of the temple was excavated in the 8th century, during the reign of Rashtrakuta King Krishna I. It also has architectural similarities with that of Pallava and Chalukya Dynasty.

15. Bani Begum Garden

Dedicated to Bani Begum, wife of Emperor Aurangzeb’s son, this Garden with beautifully carved landscapes, fountains, pillars, and majestic domes, is a popular tourist attraction. It has a resemblance to Mughal style of architecture. Located in Khuldabad, Bani begum garden is around 25 km from the city centre of Aurangabad. The premises of Bani Begum garden has a mosque, tomb of Bani Begum, a tank and a pavilion. This charismatic garden is spread over an area of 9 acres. It opens from 9 AM to 5 PM on all days of the week.

16. Soneri Mahal

Another historical monument in Aurangabad that one must visit is the Soneri Mahal. Standing in the Satmala mountain ranges, this stunning palace was built from 1651 to 1653 AD by the Bundelkhand Chief who used to accompany Emperor Aurangzeb. However, it was later sold to Nizam of Hyderabad in the 1970s. Eventually in 1979, this palace was converted into a museum.

Sonehri Mahal now lies within the premises of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. It is at this place where the annual Ajanta and Ellora festival is often organized. Tourists can visit Soneri Mahal from 10.30 AM to 5 PM. It remains open on all days of the week, except Monday.

17. Panchakki

Panchakki is not a usual sightseeing place. A water mill complex, it was built in 1695, by Turktaz Khan, a noble on the staff of Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah. Used for harnessing water from a mountain reservoir, this mill is an example of scientific advancement in ancient India.

Within the complex of Panchakki there is a madrasa, the house of a minister, Sarai, zananas and a mosque. There is a library as well with more than 2500 books in different languages, including Persian and Arabic.

18. Tomb of Aurangzeb

Located in Khuldabad village, Tomb of Aurangzeb is the grave of the 6th and the last Emperor of the Mughal Sultanate. Popularly known as Aurangzeb, the Mughal real name was Muhi-ud-Din Muhammad. Around 25 kms from the city centre, this grave is at Sheikh Zainuddin Dargah, who was his spiritual guide.

The Tomb of Aurangzeb is unlike any other tombs of rulers that we see all over the country. As per the wish of the Emperor Aurangzeb, his burial was organised in simple manner and the tomb was kept humble, with just a wooden porch and Persian inscriptions. However, later in the 1700s, Lord Curzon, a British Statesman, discovered the tomb and built the marble enclosure and flooring around it.

19. Dargah of Pir Ismail

As the name suggests, this Dargah was constructed in the memory of Pir Ismail. Popular among locals, it is a prominent monument of Aurangabad. Pir Ismail was one of the teachers of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The Dargah of Pir Ismail welcomes everyone with a grand entrance with pointed archways. It has a captivating terrace, parapet, façade and a dome. The intricate designs and carvings are worth noticing.

Lonar Crater lake is a geographical wonder, which finds its mention even in ancient scriptures like Skanda Purana and the Padma Purana. A National Geo-heritage Monument, this lake was created from a meteorite impact during Pleistocene Epoch. The water of the lake is both saline and alkaline.

In 2010, the Maharashtra Tourism Minister declared Aurangabad to be the tourism capital of Maharashtra. It is one of the top places to visit as part of Maharashtra tour packages . Popularly known as the City of Gates, Aurangabad is among the prominent historical places to visit near Pune . The city was founded in 1610 AD by Malik Ambar, the Prime Minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah of Ahmadnagar and his son Fateh Khan changed the original name Khadki to Fatehnagar. The areas around Aurangabad were under the control of Delhi Sultanates, Bahamani Sultans, Nizam Shahis, Mughals, and Hyderabad Nizams. After Aurangzeb, the city became part of the princely state of Hyderabad until 1956 AD when it was merged with the Bombay state and eventually the state of Maharashtra in 1960 AD. Named after the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, Aurangabad is a tourist hub of Maharashtra. The city is surrounded by many historical monuments, including the world-famous Ajanta - Ellora Caves , which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Aurangabad, which was declared by the Government as the Tourism Capital of Maharashtra back in 2010, is a famous tourist hub which greets its visitors with a richly woven tapestry of sights and sounds. The city got its name for being the erstwhile capital of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century AD. The town is used as the base to explore the extremely famous caves of Ajanta and Ellora, Daulatabad Fort which is renowned for its strong defence systems, Mausoleums of Aurangzeb and Bibi-Ka-Maqbara famous for its architecture and Grishneshwar Temple, one of the only 12 Shiva Jyotirlingas in India.

From UNESCO World Heritage Sites to bustling markets brimming with delicate silk items and exquisite hand-woven garments, Aurangabad promises all tourists an exciting holiday experience. While the city is rapidly heading towards industrial growth and globalisation, it still retains most of its past glory, heritage, charms and traditions. The most famous tourist attraction of Aurangabad is the Ajanta and Ellora Caves. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Ajanta Caves is home to 29 different caves, all of which showcase Buddhist artwork belonging to the period ranging from 200 B.C to 650 A.D. All paintings and sculptures in the caves were constructed painstakingly by Buddhist monks using only simple tools such as chisels and hammers. These paintings and sculptures portray a varied range of stories, starting from the Jataka Tales to intriguing accounts of ancient nymphs and princesses. The Ellora Caves, a little distance away from the Ajanta Caves, houses a total of 34 caves and has sculptures and paintings depicting not one, but three different religions – Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The sheer diversity of the sculptures, the architectural expertise, and the centuries of hard work undertaken by artisans are enough to leave you speechless. The sole remaining example of Mughal architecture in this part of the country, Bibi ka Maqbara is a mausoleum dedicated to Rabia-ul-Daurani, wife of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Designed by the Persian architect Ustad-Ata-Ullah, Bibi ka Maqbara has a structure similar to that of the Taj Mahal, with the main structure bordered by four towering minarets on four sides. The entire building is a sight to behold, and sunrises and sunsets are resplendent, with the rays of the sun beautifully casting the reflection of the mausoleum on the water of the canal in front of the building. Aurangabad is also home to temples such as the Jyothirlinga Grishneshwar temple and the Bhadra Maruti Temple, both of which have legends and myths of their own. Siddharth Garden is a place that all nature lovers will be mesmerized by. A landscaped garden housing a wide variety of sculpted trees and shrubs, the Siddharth Garden is also home to wild creatures such as lions, tigers, leopards, deer, and hyena. Sitting back on the green lawns of the garden and enjoying a beautiful picnic is a very popular tourist activity here. The erstwhile Mughal capital has retained most of its traditional Tughlaq cuisine, with Tandoors and Kebabs being local staples that you will find at almost every roadside eatery. Known for its arts and crafts, and especially its silk, Aurangabad has plenty of markets from where you can buy various local handicrafts, exotic gems, shawls, and of course, the region’s famous paithani silk sarees.

The best places in Moscow for space lovers

In Moscow lovers of the films “Interstellar” and “Gravity” can begin their space tour as soon as they arrive by staying at the Cosmos Hotel, located in what could be called the “space” part of town. From there they can cross the street to the Cosmos Pavilion at VDNKh and the Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics.

Choose the planetarium that fits you best: a fancy one full of wild amusements or a small and cosy Soviet one hidden among the trees of Ekaterininsky Park. For a tour of Zvezdny Gorodok (Star Village) reservations often must be made two months in advance.

Cosmic canine pioneers

At the end of World War II it was still unknown if a living being could survive a space flight. In the USSR, given Professor Pavlov’s previous experience, experiments went forward with dogs, while in the U.S. and France scientists chose monkeys and cats respectively. In the USSR dogs were taken from shelters, as family dogs were considered too soft. Scientists needed dogs with a real “Soviet character,” in other words tough and full of self-denial.

In August 1960 Belka and Strelka accomplished 17 orbits around the Earth and their comeback was a triumph. They spent the rest of their lives in glory, and were often paraded around in kindergartens and schools. When they died their bodies were stuffed with straw and put on display at the Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow.

Nikita Khrushchev gave Pushinka, a puppy of the heroine Strelka, as a gift to President Kennedy’s daughter. The gift was intended as a hint: the First Secretary of the Communist Party wanted to demonstrate that the USSR had beaten the U.S. in the space race. Once the CIA checked it for listening devices, Pushinka became the Kennedys’ pet, soon pairing it off with their Welsh terrier Charlie. She gave birth to four puppies.

The museum has a rich collection including the first satellite, a space WC, the capsule where space dogs Kozyavka and Otvazhnaya lived, the personal belongings of the first astronaut, specimens from the moon and recreations of space flights. Authentic space food is sold in the gift shop.

Everything has been left untouched at Korolev’s Memorial House Museum located nearby. He lived there for six years during an intense period of work, fully devoting himself to projects aimed at conquering space, the most important of which was the launch of the Earth’s first artificial satellite and the first space flight of a man.

Zvezdny Gorodok (Star City)

The Astronauts’ Training Center and the Museum of Space Exploration can be found at the closed settlement Zvezdny Gorodok. Here you can learn about the history of spacecraft, see the first Soviet rocket, spacesuits and flight simulators for the training of astronauts. If you submit to a quick medical check-up, you can try all this yourself. But strolling around the grounds through this quiet town is also worthwhile as it’s a fascinating glimpse into Soviet scientific settlements. In order to visit the museum, you need to book a tour by phone or e-mail at least 35 days in advance.

Moscow Planetarium

The Moscow Planetarium was recently reconstructed and has once again become a major destination for entertainment mixed with a scientific and educational mission. There are Large and Small Star Halls, the Lunarium interactive museum, a 4D cinema and an observatory.

The planetarium is located in the Large Star Hall, which projects stars and planets on the ceiling and shows a documentary film on black holes and the collision of galaxies. In the Lunarium you can make the Sun explode with a virtual meteorite, take a walk on Mars, launch a hydrogen-fuelled rocket or give shape to an extra-terrestrial. This is not Moscow's only such facility, as there is also a small but pleasant planetarium in Ekaterininsky Park:  www.planetarium-cc.ru   (in Russian)

The Cosmos Pavilion at VDNKh

The Cosmos Pavilion Museum at VDNKh park features a full-size interactive model of the future Mars-Tefo space station. It is part educational project and part interactive museum dedicated to the exploration of Mars. It is also a place where you can experience the role of the astronaut and explorer of distant worlds.

There are three ways to experience Mars-Tefo: you can look, touch or try yourself. Visitors can get on a simulator that mimics a walk on the surface of Mars with views of its landscapes. The walk leads to the station, where you can observe sandstorms.

There are fantastic images of Mars’ surface as well as a panorama of the Gale Crater shot by the Curiosity space probe in 2012. Additionally, visitors can enter the teleport zone and go into the future to a time when humans can explore Mars and a screening room where you can see Mars and a film on the exploration and conquest of the Red Planet.

The History of the World: Nixon visits Moscow

22 May 1972 The following is a brief extract from The History of the World: Sixth Edition by J.M. Roberts and O.A. Westad.

In October 1971 the UN General Assembly had recognized the People’s Republic as the only legitimate representative of China in the United Nations, and expelled the representative of Taiwan. This was not an outcome the United States had anticipated until the crucial vote was taken. The following February, there took place a visit by Nixon to China that was the first visit ever made by an American president to mainland Asia, and one he described as an attempt to bridge ‘sixteen thousand miles and twenty-two years of hostility.’

When Nixon followed his Chinese trip by becoming also the first American president to visit Moscow (in May 1972), and this was followed by an interim agreement on arms limitation – the first of its kind – it seemed that another important change had come about. The stark, polarized simplicities of the Cold War were blurring, however doubtful the future might be.

He is Professor of International History at the London School of Economics. He has published fifteen books on modern and contemporary international history, among them ‘The Global Cold War,’ which won the Bancroft Prize.

Cool place to visit in Moscow -- Muzeon Park

One of the most interesting places we visited in MOscow was the New Tretyakov gallery which houses the Soviet Era and socialist realist art; really a must. The older gallery is wonderful but mostly things you can see anywhere in the world; the New Tretyakov has the Soviet art you can only see here (and not even in St. Petersburg where we searched in vane to find Soviet era art).

Just outside the gallery in Muzeon Park is the Garden of Fallen Leaders which is where the unloved statues of unloved despots were dumped and are now displayed: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/12/03/garden-of-fallen-leaders/ Unfortunately on the day we were there is began to pour rain when we left the gallery to explore the park and so I don't have as many pictures as I would like, but it was still pretty interesting and I would put it high on the list of sights to see for a visit to Moscow. It is across the highway from Gorky Park and you could combine a visit. We took the metro from the center to the Oktyabrskaya stop and walked to the park.

On the way back to our hotel we took a detour and visited a couple of interesting monasteries -- they are all over Moscow and well worth checking out ones near where you stay.
