Aynur Doğan to play Carnegie Hall May 5

Aynur Doğan (b. 1975) is a Kurdish singer and composer from Bakur who has brought the traditional Kurdish music to the international stage, blending it with Western music. Her music has won global acclaim and allowed her to become a cultural icon of Kurdish people internationally.

Doğan was born in Çemişgezek, a village in Dersim province in eastern Turkey. She belongs to the Alevi community, in which singing is interlinked with spirit—she sang from girlhood.

In 1992, due to the Turkish state’s destruction of Kurdish villages, her Alevi family fled to Istanbul. There she encountered musical styles from all over the world. She studied saz and türkü singing at the Arif Sağ Müsik.

Her first album, Seyir (2002), gained widespread attention. Her second was Keçe Kurdan (Kurdish Girl, 2004). The title song encourages women to assert their rights against male domination. In 2005 a court held that the song encouraged women to leave their men and go to the mountains, hence promoted “division.” So Keçe Kurdan was banned. (The ban was lifted a year later.)  In this video , filmed in 2017, Aynur sings “Kece Kurdan.”

Aynur Dogan

, Doğan’s later albums include Rewend (2010), Hevra (2013), Hawniyaz (2016), and Hedûr (Finding Comfort) (2020). Throughout her career, her primary inspiration remains the traditional Kurdish folk songs of her village.  Her lyrics speak to the life and sufferings of Kurdish people, especially  women. She sings of identity, love, loss, and pain.

In 2012, following repeated threats by right-wing and anti-Kurdish militants, Doğan relocated to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.

She has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. In 2015: The Music of Strangers, directed by Morgan Neville, a documentary about the ensemble.

In 2017, Aynur Doğan received the Master of Mediterranean Music Award in the category of “Mediterranean Women in Action” from the Berklee Mediterranean Music Institute. The award recognized her efforts to preserve and reinterpret Kurdish folk music.  In August 2021 she received the Womex Award for her resilience in performing in an environment where she faced discrimination both as a Kurd and as an Alevi.

In 2022 the Turkish state’s repression of Kurdish culture again had consequences for her.  In June she was to give a concert in the western seaport city of Derince, in Kocaeli province. But on May 15, Kurdish Language Day, the municipality abruptly canceled that the concert, calling it “ not appropriate .”

Aynur Doğan often performs in Europe. In April and May 2023, she will tour the United States, with performances in in La Jolla, San Francisco, Seattle, Schenectady, and New York City. She will play Carnegie Hall in New York on Friday, May 5.  Tickets are available through her website .  Here is an article about her current tour.

Aynur Saturday, May 06, 2023 Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre

Aynur blends Kurdish and Western sounds, interpreting her traditional repertoire in a modern way. Her music is based on traditional Kurdish folk songs, many of them at least 300 years old. Her lyrics are about the life and suffering of Kurdish people, especially Kurdish women. This eventually caused mass controversy. Her album Keçe Kurdan was banned in 2005 by a court that alleged its lyrics had inspired separatism. The ban, however, was lifted the following year. Problems continued for her when audience members at the 2010 Istanbul Jazz Festival booed her for singing in Kurdish, causing her to leave the gig. Additionally, in 2022, Turkey’s Derince municipality in the northwestern Kocaeli province, controlled by Turkish President Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), banned Aynur’s concert after organizers deemed her concerts “inappropriate.”

Simultaneously, Aynur’s activism has been widely praised internationally. In 2017, the singer and composer received a Berklee College of Music award in the category of Mediterranean Women in Action that recognized her faithfulness to traditional Kurdish music and her perseverance in overcoming challenges while following her artistic path, and in 2021, Aynur became the first Turkish artist to receive the WOMEX Artist Award, which was introduced in 1999 to acknowledge the social and political importance of musical excellence at a global level.

Aynur has collaborated with several famous musicians such as the world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In 2013, Aynur released Hevra/Together under Sony Music Classical, which featured a fantastic collaboration with five-time Latin Grammy-winning Spanish producer, songwriter, and guitarist Javier Limón, known for his work with superstars like Buika, Yasmin Levy, and Mariza. On Hevra , Javier Limón and Aynur artfully synthesize flamenco and Kurdish music, continually crossing the limits. Hevra combines all the colors of East and West in a common musical expression.

In 2020, Aynur released her latest album, Hedûr . The album withholds many first achievements in Aynur’s career, including her first experiences as an arranger, composer, and producer. Working with German Jazz pianist Franz Von Chossy, Aynur blends her Kurdish roots with jazz elements, carrying the ancient Kurdish music tradition into the present. Meaning “consoling oneself” or “taking solace in time” in Kurdish, the name emphasizes the intersection between her musical and spiritual journey. It acts as a reflection of the hardships and injustices faced by the people in her home country, Turkey, though it can also be understood as a lament for the state of humanity as a whole. She describes Hedûr as “a search for inner peace using the sounds of my mother tongue and the music of humanity.”

Kurdish vocalist Aynur Doğan , whose stage name is Aynur, received the Mediterranean Music Institute Award on March 16, becoming the first woman to earn the honor since the its inception in 2014. Immediately upon winning the award, she dedicated it to the resilient women of her homeland.

“It’s a big honor for me. I grew up with the voices of women who lamented war and the children they could not raise. Day after day, lamentations have grown but not sons or daughters,” she said. "I dedicate this award to our women who, despite violence and oppression, do not bow their heads.” Born in Dersim, eastern Turkey, and raised in Istanbul, Aynur sings music that is based on traditional Kurdish folk songs, many of them at least 300 years old. Her lyrics are about the life and suffering of the Kurdish people, especially Kurdish women. She accepted the award during the MMI’s annual concert at the Berklee Performance Center. As part of the event, the MMI announced that it was launching the Mediterranean Women in Action (MWIA) Initiative, which celebrates and reinforces the power of Mediterranean women in the arts, seeking to raise awareness and promote gender equality in the Mediterranean music scene.

Flamenco guitarist Josemi Carmona, double-bassist Javier Colina, and percussionist José Manuel Ruiz Motos kicked off the event with their song “Bandolero” and other tunes from their new album, De Cerca . Student violinist Tania Mesa appeared on stage with them for the song “Historia de un Amor.” Aynur opened the second half of the concert, accompanied by MMI artistic director Javier Limón on guitar, with “Ehmedo.” For the next tune, the traditional Kurdish song "Heyder,” she was joined by the MMI Consort, a band of 11 students under the musical direction of Turkish students Elif Çakmut and Mahir Can Küçük, the winner of the MMI Student Achievement Award this year. The third tune, “Rewend,” one of Aynur’s most famous compositions, featured solos by Iranian student Farzin Denghan on kamancheh and guest balaban player Alp Akmaz of Turkey. The fourth song, “Malan Bar Kir—Berivane” (“Displaced from Home”), a Kurdish folk song, inspired the audience to sing along and dance down the aisles of the Berklee Performance Center. The crowd kept singing and dancing through “Keça Kurdan,” the call to Kurdish women, and “Min Digo.” It stayed on its feet for a standing ovation.

Watch Aynur's performance of "Rewend":

Previous MMI Award winners include four flamenco musicians: guitarist Pepe Habichuela , singer José Mercé , harmonica player Antonio Serrano , and singer, composer, and producer Pepe de Lucía .

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
