This course is designed to familiarize student with different countries and the most popular destinations that clients request. Students will cover North America, Europe, South America, Pacific and Asia.

Domestic Ticketing [AB-DOM4]

This course is designed to address the basics of domestic ticketing fundamentals. City and airport codes are studied.

International Ticketing [AB-ITK4]

This course is designed to address the basics of international ticketing and rentals. City and airport codes are studied.

Travel Agency Operations [AB-TAP4]

In this course students will explore different facets of tourism for example, adventure and niche tourism. Other examples of study in this course will be travel law and travel insurance and the daily operations within a travel business.

Travel and Tourism Capstone Project [TAT-CPS]

This is the capstone project component of the Travel and Tourism program, which is the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills from the classroom portion of the program to practical situations typically encountered in a travel and tourism environment. The variety of tasks to perform as part of the capstone project will be aligned to a typical working environment and real life situations

Airline Reservation Systems [ARS4]

VIASINC is a simulated software program combining lessons and an Emulator to transform the student’s computer into a close approximation of a live computer reservation system. VIASINC is used to access information and to create industry-standard passenger name records.

Career & Employment Strategies [CES4]

This course looks at the planning, preparation, execution, and follow-up stages of an interview: how people find jobs; employer expectations; presenting an enthusiastic attitude; focusing on the right job; transferable skills; the job interview; effective resume preparation; cover and thank you letters; effective telemarketing; tapping the hidden job market; handling objections; job search management; self-confidence and self-esteem building; mock interviews (video-taped); and individual counselling and coaching.

Practicum [AB-TAT199]

Students will be placed in actual workplaces related to their field of study and will be expected to act as a regular employee in order to gain the valuable real-world experience that so many employers seek. Students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement; however, once placed, continuation in that placement is mandatory.

Travel Agent Proficiency Test

The TAP® test or Travel Agent Proficiency is the first step towards professional recognition. Often included at the end of entry-level training programs, the test allows candidates to demonstrate that they have mastered the basics of the travel industry – selling skills, basic geography, and the items/products sold by travel counselors.

The test is a *proctored, consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates are given two hours to complete the test.

*Proctor Requirements : A test proctor is required for this test. The proctor is someone chosen by the candidate and their responsibility is to be sure that the candidate isn’t using any books, notes or reference materials while testing. The proctor chosen should be a) over 21, b) not related to the candidate, and c) not currently preparing to take the TAP® test themselves.

Questions You Should Know The Answers To…

Prior to creating our New Agent Learning Program we did our homework. From our research, we found there are many differences in what host agencies offer. Here are some key questions you will want to ask when talking to us and to any other host agency.

  • Is marketing included in your fees or is it an extra fee?
  • Do they do the marketing for you and from you or do they create the material and you have to do it?
  • Direct Mail (Canada Post)
  • Targeted E-Marketing
  • E-Newsletters

Referral Program:

  • Do they offer a referral program that compensates friends and family that refer new clients to you?
  • Do they have a referral program that compensates friends or colleagues that refer new customers to you?
  • What is the length of the contract you will be asked to sign? Buyer beware! Some contracts are for 5 year terms and even after 5 years the contract says you are not able to work in the travel industry for 1 more year.
  • Are there many additional fees for marketing, websites, telephone that you should know before making your decision?

Personal Website:

  • Do they offer a personalized bookable website in their fees?
  • Does their website have booking engines that include Hotel, Car, Cruise, Packages, Insurance & Excursions?
  • Are you responsible for updating the content on your site or is it done for you?
  • How is the training delivered? Is it live (via webinar), prerecorded or classroom?
  • What materials will you receive? Will you receive actual textbooks and workbooks from an accredited training institute or is it a binder compiled by the host agency?
  • Does the host agency require you to make your bookings in Sabre or Apollo? While these tools may financially benefit the host agency, it’s not so easy for a new agent. These tools are difficult to learn and consume a significant portion of your scheduled training program.

And the final question, one of the most important questions for you personally:

  • After you start with your host agency, are you supported by a team dedicated exclusively to new agents or by an accessible, experienced agent of that host agency?

Certified Travel Counselor

This Travel Institute certificate requires at least five years of experience and a Certified Travel Association certification. This course focuses on marketing and building consumer relationships. CTC costs $550 to complete the course and $600 for the CTC Fast Track.

Certified Travel Industry Executive

CTIE is also backed by the Travel Institute and requires at least five years of field experience. This $550 program includes courses on travel business, marketing management, bookkeeping, and travel law.

ASTA Verified Travel Advisor

This certificate is given by the American Society of Travel Advisors and teaches applicants about the legalities of travel and how to solidify relationships with consumers. The nine-course program also focuses on ethical travel advising, agency law, and travel agency compliance.

For ASTA members, the course is $399, and for nonmember independent contractors, it's $598. Travel Advisor nonmembers pay the steepest price, which is $729, and $179 for recertification.

How much do travel agents make?

According to Indeed , travel agents make an average of $53,924, and salaries can range between $30,131 and $96,506, depending on where you live. But other factors can affect an agent's earning potential, like working independently instead of for a travel agency.
