• Do I get to meet my chosen child? Yes, you are absolutely able, and encouraged, to meet the child you choose to sponsor! Sponsors are welcome to attend our tutoring sessions, birthday parties, and life experiences. We also have group events planned for sponsors during the year to build connections and relationships. When you sponsor a child you’re not just giving a gift and putting a picture on your fridge (although that is great). When you partner with Eight Waves, you are stepping into a child’s life in a unique way; you become a supporting and encouraging character in the child’s epic God-given storyline and are able to meet with them.
• Can I contribute to a child’s life without meeting them? Absolutely! There is no obligation to meet with the child you are sponsoring.
• Why is reading at or above grade level important for students? The children in the Eight Waves program are all performing below grade level in academics. There is a direct correlation between reading, education, and poverty. The National Institute for Literacy estimates that 43% of adults with very low literacy skills live in poverty. About 70% of adult welfare recipients have lower-level literacy skills on the National Assessment of the Adult Literacy (NAAL).
• Why are hygiene items considered under crisis intervention? The programs most commonly used by low-wage earners to help pay at the grocery store— SNAP and WIC—do not cover hygiene supplies, leaving many of our children without necessities such as floss and toothpaste, laundry detergent, and tampons. Good hygiene is vital because it helps prevent the spreading of germs and infectious diseases.
• How long is the financial commitment for? You choose! Our goal is to maintain a partnership with our sponsors for a minimum of one year.
• Is there an age requirement to be a sponsor? We hope that the whole family can partake in sponsorship and all ages are welcome to join in for volunteering.
• I would like to volunteer. How do I get started? Great! Please email [email protected] to get more information.
• Will I be updated on the child that I am sponsoring? Yes! We provide a monthly newsletter that provides updates on all that is happening at Eight Waves and the children and families involved.
• Is my sponsorship tax deductible? Yes, all sponsorships are tax-deductible.
• Why do students need school supplies year-round? The high cost of school supplies poses a challenge to many parents and impacts students during back-to-school season and throughout the school year. Backpacks break, books need to be purchased, pencils go missing, which may lead to the students not having a successful academic year. With your support, we supply all the student’s academic needs on an ongoing basis including summer reading material.
• Are there corporate sponsorship options available? Yes, we offer corporate sponsorships as well. Please contact Sara Meyer at 352-255-7350.
• Can I plan something special just for the child I am sponsoring with my family? We follow very strict rules to always protect the child as well as yourself. We do not allow the child you are sponsoring to be invited to attend anything other than what is planned and structured through Eight Waves.
• Can I provide gifts, treats, and educational items for the child I am sponsoring? Yes! Items may be dropped off at the center and are greatly appreciated. A few suggestions our children use are educational games, art, tech, books, sports, craft material, music, and hygiene items.
• What is Eight Waves? Eight Waves provides high-quality care with eight innovative services for under-resourced children, youth, and families through the following programs: Reading Intervention, Mentorship, Life Experiences, Family Stability, Birthday Parties, Books for Babies, Mom’s Mentoring, and Hygiene Help.

Our Instructors

JIM KROLL- DIRECTOR OF GOLF BELLA COLLINA- PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Jim is a 30 year Class A Member of the PGA of America. He served for more than 18 years at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida,  to begin his career. Because of his many years of experience as a golf instructor and coach, Jim has a wealth of knowledge in teaching players of all ability levels. Additionally, he is currently a certified Titleist Performance Institute instructor. He received his bachelors degree in Management from Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana.

DAN HATCHER- HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL BELLA COLLINA- PGA PROFESSIONAL

Dan is a Class A Member of the PGA of America and is originally from Palm Bay, Florida. Dan started his career as an Apprentice Professional at the Bayhill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Florida. Dan's playing and teaching experience give him the knowledge and capability to proficiently diagnose the golf swing for a variety of golfers. He graduated with a degree in Sports Management from the University of North Florida. 

TODD MEENA- PGA PROFESSIONAL

Todd Meena has been ranked as a top golf instructor in the state of Florida by Golf Digest Magazine for over 15 years. He has taught in numerous teaching workshops for the PGA of America and has appeared as a featured instructor on The Golf Channel’s “Academy Live”. Todd has co-authored the instructional manual and DVD series “18 to 8”, and is a former playing member of the European PGA Tour. Todd was the Head Instructor at The Grand Cypress Academy of Golf in Orlando, Florida, from 1995-2019.

JAY LASSEN- APPRENTICE PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Jay is currently enrolled as an Apprentice PGA Professional with the PGA of America and joined the team at Bella Collina in 2010. Jay's enthusiasm and knowledge of the game is instrumental in helping him to effectively connect and communicate to all of his students. He graduated from the Professional Golfers' Career College in 2012 and is originally from Cheshire, CT. Jay currently resides in Orlando, Florida.

ARE ON SITE ACCOMMODATIONS AVAILABLE?

Yes.  On-site lodging is available at Bella Collina's Siena Lodge.  Please contact Siena at 407-469-4992 for availability and pricing. 

I AM A BEGINNING GOLFER.  CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE ACADEMY?

Yes!  Golfers of all ability levels are encouraged to attend.

IS A ROUND OF GOLF INCLUDED IF I ATTEND THE ACADEMY?

Yes.  A complimentary round of golf is included after each day of instruction at the Academy.  Students are encouraged to enjoy and play our renowned Sir Nick Faldo Championship golf course after instruction.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER?

Every effort will be made to complete the entire curriculum scheduled for the Academy.  Additionally, we have planned for various indoor instructional options for certain portions of our schedule.  Should weather conditions force the cancellation of a day or days of the Academy, a refund for any canceled days will be provided.

IS BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER PROVIDED AS PART OF THE COST OF THE ACADEMY?

Each day, during the Academy, breakfast, and lunch are provided.  Dinner is not included in the curriculum

WHAT IS THE NEAREST AIRPORT TO BELLA COLLINA?

Having never done a golf academy before it was very interesting to have the elements of golf broken down into segments and to have a good amount of time to work on those individual components and to tweak parts of my swing, stance or approach. I got something from each lesson and the biggest gain, for me, was in the short game and putting, but especially the putting!

The benefits I saw from an academy vs an individual lesson was the ability to watch other golfers under instruction and to see/ hear what they were doing and hear their feedback and approach to the game in a forum that was very relaxed.

Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. Do they speak English in Moscow?

Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
