13 TRAVEL INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS TO FOLLOW FOR SERIOUS INSPIRATION AND WANDERLUST

Marketing, promoting your business, social media marketing, the 13 travel instagram accounts will give you major wanderlust.

By now it’s no secret that I have a serious penchant for world travel. For me, there is nothing better than incorporating my love for travel and adventure into my business by working with epic, experience-centered clients around the world.

I know my tribe resonates with travel the same way.

Maybe you’re a travel brand. Maybe you’re a budding location-independent entrepreneur. Or maybe it’s simply that you value experiences over possessions. No matter what role travel plays in your life, this post is for you.

I’m sharing a compilation of my all-time favorite travel Instagram accounts . These aren’t bloggers, but actual travel and tourism brands who are rocking Instagram and crushing the hospitality internet marketing game. They are also inspiring and impacting lives in the process. If you’re looking for luxury travel and tourism branding inspiration, then look no further!

An amazing Instagram account has nothing to do with how many followers you have. It’s all about the VALUE of the content that you are providing . You’ll find each of these travel Instagram accounts consistently shares stunning images that inspire you to get outside of your comfort zone and have a life-changing adventure.

So whether you’re a travel business who is looking for guidance on how to amp-up your Instagram account and reach new potential clients OR you’re a travel-lover ready to get inspired for your next world adventure, read on. These are 13 travel Instagram accounts you are going to want to follow.

13 Travel Instagram Accounts To Follow For Serious Inspiration and Wanderlust

1.  Adventure Culture:  @adventure_culture

If you enjoy jaw-dropping scenery and adrenaline-pumping adventures in the great outdoors, then Adventure Culture has just what you need. The creative agency equips active travelers for world travel and wild adventures.

2. Conde Nast Traveler:  @cntraveler

For those of us who enjoy the finer things in life—like delectable cuisine and luxurious abodes—Conde Nast Traveler’s Instagram is sure to be a favorite. This travel company has been inspiring people through their stories for years, so it’s no surprise that their Instagram account is just as powerful.

3. Travel and Leisure:  @travelandleisure

Want to know where the most beautiful places in the world are? Just take a look at Travel and Leisure’s Instagram. Their powerful photography makes for potent visual storytelling.

4. Australia Tourism Board:  @australia

This is hands-down the best tourism board on Instagram. When recently working with a client in Israel, this is the sample account I used to demonstrate what a travel Instagram account that works actually looks like. If you’re a travel or tourism business, go get inspired to create similarly breathtaking images.

5. Explore Canada:  @explorecanada

Another tourism board with enticing photographs that make me want to get on the next plane to Canada.  Explore Canada does a particularly wonderful job at portraying all aspects of the country, from cuisine to architecture to landscapes.

6. Travel Channel:  @travelchannel

Another iconic name in travel, the Travel Channel’s Instagram account lives up to its reputation by truly inspiring people to travel through gorgeous images.

7. National Geographic Travel:  @natgeotravel

Because can you really have a list of top travel Instagram accounts without including National Geographic? Not only are their photos beautiful, but the post descriptions provided detailed descriptions and information about the location the image was captured.

8. Royal Caribbean:  @royalcaribbean

You don’t have to be a cruise ship aficionado to take one look at Royal Caribbean’s Instagram account and want to start planning your next trip at sea. Royal Caribbean truly excels by showcasing all aspects of what a cruise with them looks like, including the adventures, the food and the stunning locales.

9. Lufthansa Airlines:  @lufthansa

Lufthansa is my favorite airline, so I was excited to see that their Instagram account also excels with high-quality travel photos. But what I really love about Lufthansa is that they actually respond to comments on their photos with real, personal messages. Too many businesses forget that social media is all about creating a community. Take the time to show your followers that you care, and your business will reap the benefits.

If you don’t have time to respond to questions and comments, consider hiring a social media manager. The personal touch is a surefire way to increase your followers.

10. Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts:  @fourseasons

This is probably the best hotel Instagram account around. Four Seasons does an amazing job of taking you outside of the resort and into the one-of-a-kind locations where they operate.

11. Leading Hotels Of The World:  @leadinghotelsoftheworld

Another gorgeous account where each photo succeeds in telling a story. With over 400 locations around the globe, you’ll find inspiration no matter where your travels are taking you.

12. Lonely Planet:  @lonelyplanet

When you ache for authentic, off-the-beaten-track travel. I still remember backpacking with my best friend in college and always having our doggy-eared Lonely Planet nearby. That book was our everything. Lonely Planet’s Instagram is chock-full of the same high-quality travel inspiration.

13. New York Times Travel:  @nytimestravel

The New York Times has multiple Instagram accounts for the different niches and topics that they cover. Their riveting travel photos actually make me want to head to their website to read more about the stories behind them.

For my world travel adventures and business inspiration, make sure to follow me:

The 22 Best Instagram Travel Accounts To Inspire You

instagram travel accounts to follow

Instagram is simple, it’s visual and it creates a quick emotional impact! It’s also a great way to discover new places around the world. No wonder I’m always seeking the best Instagram travel accounts to follow!

Even though I despise the direction Instagram is going, with self-proclaimed influencers spreading like wildfire ( beautypreneurs is a thing now…) I confess I do spend a significant amount of time there .

Sometimes double tapping cat videos. Sometimes stalking my friends. But I’m especially interested in new travel inspiration. And now I’m sharing them with you (the travel content, not the cats).

Best Instagram Travel Accounts to Follow >>

For this list, I tried to avoid hollow influencers who only use travel as a way of getting new backdrops for their own photos. The world needs valuable content, interesting things to learn and see and especially people who truly love to travel.

With no particular order, these are my favorite Instagram travel bloggers to feed your wanderlust (list updated May 2019). They are travel bloggers, Youtube stars, journalists or simple amateurs sharing real, honest, and interesting content.

Let’s get inspired!

1 @paulodelvalle

Paulo’s was one of the first accounts I followed in Instagram. He’s a Brazilian travel photographer, but mostly a storyteller. His amazing photos in the most varied landscapes inspired me to follow my own wanderlust dream.

Estou muito impressionado com a beleza dos templos e santuários japoneses. Cada um mais bonito que o outro! 😍 I’m really impressed with the beauty of the japanese temples and shrines. Each one prettier than the other! 😍 Tokyo, Japan. 🇯🇵 w/ @marlonduque A post shared by Paulo del Valle (@paulodelvalle) on Jan 3, 2016 at 6:11am PST

2 @youngadventuress

Liz is one of my favorite travel bloggers out there and Young Adventuress is a BIG SUCCESS in the travel blog world. What I particularly enjoy about her is how down-to-earth and unpretentious she is.

Her gallery in Instagram has bits and bobs from everywhere in the world, but mostly from the awe-inspiring New Zealand outdoors.

3 @treyratcliff

What I like the most about Trey’s body of work is that he’s not afraid of color. In fact, he’s all about color!

You can sneak peek his travel photography blog , displaying more of his amazing pictures.

4 @Tourist2Townie

I’ve been a follower of Gareth’s videos on Tourist2Townie’s Youtube channel for quite some time. I’ve always been a fan of the very down-to-earth and humble way he approaches travel, still managing to be informative and truly helpful.

His his Instagram “is secondary” (his words, not mine), but still very much worth it if you ask me.

5 @danielkordan

Daniel is a landscape photographer who shoots STUNNING pictures in remote places like Japan , Russia or Norway .

I have to confess I think this is one of the most inspiring Instagram accounts I’ve EVER come across. After all, 1M followers can’t be wrong.

6 @bemytravelmuse

I found Kristin’s Instagram very recently and made an impact on me. It’s one of those accounts you can’t stop scrolling down.

Once a former investment banker in the corporate world, Kristin is a now a travel writer exploring the world full-time. You can follow her on her blog too. Judging by her gallery, I’d say she chose the right path!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kristin Addis (@bemytravelmuse) on Apr 25, 2019 at 8:47am PDT

I’m going to be honest: I don’t know much about whoever is behind this account. In fact, I know nothing.

All I know is that the pictures here are breathtaking and make me want to go places. Apart from the visual element, there are also several inspiring descriptions. So Andy , whoever you are, you are awesome!

8 @bueno_bonito_barat0_travelblog

On her blog she writes in Spanish mainly, but her pictures on Instagram speak by themselves!

What I like about Alex’s gallery is how impactful his pictures can be. A photographer keen on the more remote destinations, he is able to translate the wilderness of incredible nature landscapes directly into his shots.

Alex is one of my top favorite Instagrammers out there, so I strongly suggest take a peek at his account. His photos will surely wow you!

More than being just another National Geographic photographer, Krista has the amazing ability of telling a story. She’s in this list because of in-depth descriptions of her photos, which make the captures really come alive . With such an interesting gallery, she makes it so easy to travel along with her!

View this post on Instagram It was so normal in Myanmar to pass groups of young monks or nuns on the street or in temples….I even got cut off in traffic by monks on motor scooters! On my last night in Mandalay, I had just left the Sandamuni Pagoda when I came across these young Buddhist nuns draped in pink. I climbed Mandalay Hill into the sunset and who knows where they ended up. It is amazing how such disparate lives can pass in a flash…and how we smile at each other in our shared humanity. Thank you, Myanmar, for being friendly, welcoming, beautiful, and mysterious. I’ll be back and I hope that whatever changes as the country is opened to the world, that it doesn’t take the joy from the spirit of the beautiful Myanmar people. // #FujifilmX_US @FujifilmX_US @bhphoto #mywinteraway #FujifilmXT1 #Fujifilm @NatGeoCreative @NatGeoTravel A post shared by Krista Rossow (@kristarossow) on Mar 5, 2016 at 8:32pm PST

My account is still a little fish in a world of travel sharks out there. My first photos in Instagram were taken in 2012 with a crappy camera phone (#throwbackshame). I like to think that I’ve improved by now. And I hope I can continue to get better every shutter at a time!

Unfortunately there’s no simple answer and there’s no secret overnight success tip. . With that said, I truly believe ANYONE can do it if that’s what they really want to do! It just requires some hard work, and passion. 💪🏽 . There’s soo many things you can do online these days, there’s an infinite amount of opportunity, and so many resources to help you achieve goals. . It’s the ultimate package created for you, by the leading creators online. We all collaborated on this together and are real proud of it! If you haven’t bought it already, join over 8000 others and get involved! It’ll be gone in a few days and I’d hate for you to miss out on this! You can still get it now with the link in my bio! Strategies To Engage Travel Posts on Social Media

Crafting or refining a travel social media strategy requires a multifaceted approach, that blends creativity with strategic planning to captivate and engage audiences. Whether launching a new travel Instagram account or enhancing an existing one, success hinges on several key factors: targeting the purchase cycle, understanding generational differences, localizing your ad strategy and balancing local versus national action plans.

Targeting the Purchase Cycle

Targeting the purchase cycle in your travel social media strategy involves understanding and engaging with your audience at every stage of their journey — from initial inspiration to post-trip sharing. This nuanced approach ensures that your content is seen and impactful, guiding potential travelers toward buying. Here’s how to effectively target the purchase cycle:

1. Inspiration Phase

At this initial stage, potential travelers dream about their next trip but haven’t decided on the specifics. Your goal is to spark their imagination and desire to explore. Use stunning visuals, captivating stories and engaging videos to showcase destinations, unique experiences and must-see attractions. Highlighting the beauty and excitement of travel can nudge dreamers closer to making a decision.

2. Planning Phase

Once inspired, travelers start researching potential destinations, accommodations and activities. Here, detailed guides, itineraries and tips become invaluable. Provide content that answers common questions, compares options and offers insider advice. Tools like Instagram Stories or Highlights can be used to categorize information by destination or theme, making it easily accessible.

3. Booking Phase

As travelers move to book their trips, your content should simplify this process. Share special offers, booking incentives, and straightforward calls-to-action (CTAs) that link directly to booking pages. User-generated content showcasing real guest experiences can also be persuasive, providing social proof and reducing booking hesitations.

4. Experiencing Phase

During the trip, encourage travelers to engage with your brand on social media. Create hashtags for them to use, suggest photo spots or run contests for the best travel photo. This enriches their experience and provides you with content that can inspire others.

5. Sharing Phase

After the trip, travelers often share their experiences online. Encourage this by engaging with their posts, featuring standout content on your own channels, and asking for reviews or testimonials. This feedback loop provides valuable content and builds a community around your brand.

Targeting each phase of the purchase cycle with specific strategies can guide your audience from dreaming to sharing, effectively turning followers into travelers and advocates for your brand. This approach increases engagement, conversions, fosters long-term loyalty and word-of-mouth recommendations.

Strategize for Different Audiences

Tailoring your social media marketing strategy to cater to different demographics cannot be overstated. Different groups have varying preferences, from the destinations they dream of visiting to the travel experiences they seek, be they luxury or budget-friendly adventures. This targeted approach helps curate content that resonates with each demographic and determine the most effective way to engage them. Understanding the nuances between marketing to Gen Alpha vs. Gen Z and Gen Z vs. millennials and comprehending the broader social media demographics is crucial for crafting messages that hit the mark.

Localize Your Travel Ads

Localizing ads is a strategic move that ensures your travel content speaks directly to the intended audience, taking into account cultural nuances, language and preferences. This approach enhances your ads' relevance and can boost engagement rates, making your brand more relatable and accessible to diverse groups. Dash Hudson’s Reporting and Dashboards can be instrumental in monitoring the performance of localized campaigns, providing insights that help refine strategies for different locales.

Align Content With Trends

It’s important to stay on top of the latest social media trends to keep your content fresh and engaging. Incorporating trending hashtags , topics, and formats into your travel content can increase visibility and appeal significantly. Utilizing tools like Social Listening can help you stay ahead of the curve by tracking what's currently capturing the audience's interest, allowing you to align your content strategy with these insights.

Now, he’s got an impressive collection of stamps in his passport book. He’s currently living in Bali with his other half, Lauren Bullen (aka @gypsealust). Their feeds are they very definition of relationship goals.

Have you ever spent your Tuesday envying Lauren Bullen’s life? We’re right there with you. Every other picture she posts on Gypsea Lust , she has a glowing tan and is laying on a remote beach. With a following of over 2.1 million, she is one of the top travel influencers on the market.

Last year, Travel and Leisure reported that she and her partner Jack make well over $100k a year for their travels and paid promotions. Can they adopt us? Lauren didn’t care for her day job either. A self-taught photographer, her account began to pick up steam a few years back when she was approached by a tourism bureau in Queensland, Australia to accompany them on an influencer-led trip.

For those aspiring to travel more and have a passion for photography, she offers this advice. Try to capture authentic photos. Second, a little editing and good gear go a long way. Lauren and Jack use a Canon 5D Mark IV and edit with Adobe Lightroom.

5. Chris Burkard

We’re sure you’ve heard of the adventurer and photographer Emmett Sparling . His vibrant photos and videos are nothing short of love at first sight. This crisp and surreal photography tells the story of a young man who’s come a long way in developing his skill set and seen some of the most magical places on earth. If you take a closer look though, you’ll see something else. There’s a lot to this Vancouver creative. Somehow, he’s managed to carve out a distinct image for himself among the millions of travel bloggers.

7. Captain Potter (aka Sam Potter)

Captain Potter (aka Sam Potter)

We absolutely love Sam Potter’s Instagram. His zeal for life, passion for people, and authenticity shine through. He’s certainly made a name for himself among travel bloggers. The mountains, ocean, and world around him have all become an integral part of his personhood.

Sam takes stewardship seriously; he appreciates cultures from all over the world. Growing up roaming around Kauai, he realized an impetus to travel. His love for creating has brought him around the globe.

He says, when you travel, you’re always being introduced to new things, sounds, mountains, the ocean, the people who surround you. And you’re left better for it. It’s not just your home. It’s who you are. A large part of what he wants to change about the travel industry is going just for a trend.

The secrecy of a place is what keeps it magical – respecting the land, protecting traditions. Whenever Sam meets someone new and finds himself in a new place – if it’s quiet and there’s no one around, he does his part to keep it that way. It’s so important to enter with respect and the knowledge that now that you found this place, you have a responsibility to it.

Make sure it never loses its magic. Keep the quiet places quiet. Follow along on his adventure via the Captain’s Log on YouTube and be sure to check out his page on Instagram.

8. Chelsea Kauai

Here’s more island wanderlust for you to enjoy courtesy of Chelsea Yamase. In recent years, this Hawaii native has been traveling the world as an athlete, model, and writer. Her account has amassed 577k followers and it’s easy to see why. She lets her passion for life run wild in the hopes that people will chase after their own. She chooses to view the world as precious and connected rather than fierce and unfamiliar.

Across her feed, you’ll find adventures of a lifetime – swimming with sharks, running along narrow canyons and cliffs, bungee jumping. This girl is living life to the fullest and going places (all pun intended). Her self-expression and creativity will not disappoint.

Cute lifestyle blog meets travel inspiration. We first found Zoe’s page through a collaboration with Urban Outfitters. Right now, she’s roaming through Tuscany, Italy with her boyfriend, spreading travel inspo to her loyal following of 318k. Like Zoe, her page is cheerful, fun, and easy going.

Whether she’s standing on the Spanish Steps or exploring the great outdoors in Utah, her authentic photos make you feel like you’re along for the ride. She’s honestly got one of the best travel Instagram accounts.

travel instagram accounts - Fursty

Credit: Fursty

Of all the travel Instagram accounts out there, Dylan Furst’s is a breath of fresh air. While most travel influencers flock to post pictures from the same few locations (e.g. Bali, Iceland, Thailand, Greece), Dylan pursues beauty in the simple things.

Hailing from Bellingham, WA, this PNW native has made a name for himself.  His backyard near the Rainy City has heavily influenced his style as a photographer. Specializing in outdoor, adventure, and travel photography, he’s had the opportunities to experience a variety of landscapes, countries, and cultures through the portal that is his camera. Dylan strives to show unique perspectives and tell meaningful stories through his art.

11. Earthy Andy

Is this a healthy eating account or travel account? It’s both! Earthy Andy is everything #familygoals and #travelgoals. A self-professed Earth admirer, she travels all over Hawaii and the rest of the globe with her husband and two kids. Besides making mouth-watering vegan recipes, she raises awareness about eco-friendly and sustainable living practices. We’re absolutely in love with the beautiful images she creates and the life she lives.

12. Rory Court

Rory Court

We’re surprised Rory Court’s IG hasn’t blown up by now. While he’s got a steady following of 11.6k and counting, the quality of images he produces are on the level BD shares. Keep your eyes on this Canadian photog + traveler.

13. Joonas Linkola

Joonas Linkola

Are you’re more of a winter wonderland kinda person? Go follow Joonas Linkola . He’s got one of the best travel Instagram accounts. Just browse through his feed for a good ten seconds and you’ll be hooked. From epic aerial shots over tall pines and surging rivers to serene campsite tents and the crackling of a warm fire, his feed makes you crave an adventure in the great outdoors. If you find yourself craving a cozy cabin escape in the heat of June, you’ll know who to blame.

14. Ockey Dockey

Lauren Riboldi and her Insta are a pocketful of sunshine. It’s hard not to smile when you look at her photos. Every one makes you feel like you’re let in on a special moment. We love the authenticity behind them. Her feed shouts lucky in love; scroll through for adorable couples pics with her and her husband around the Hawaiian islands.

Needless to say, the scenery is perfect too. Hawaii certainly isn’t a bad backdrop. Waterfalls, jungle roaming, and shimmering underwater bokeh effects with dolphins fill the feed. As if that wasn’t enough, her captions are refreshingly honest and meaningful. While Instagram is notoriously a place to show only the highlights of your life, she lets you in on her struggles and raw journey. That alone is worth a follow.

Obviously, I’m going to start with The Broke Backpacker’s very own (and new!) IG. Now you can get a fix of your favorite travel blog across multiple platforms, how sweet is that?

Expect travel inspiration, stories of debauchery, killer IG destinations , and sweet tips on how you too can travel on the cheap–forever!

#1 @themanwiththetinyguitar

Stringed-instrument extraordinaire as well as a savant with stringing together words, Ziggy is the definition of a broke backpacker if I’ve ever seen one. And a damn impressive adventurer at that.

From dumpster diving, to vanlife, to truly hardcore India travel, this man has truly done it all. And now you can find raw adventure, doobies, and a whole lot of candid moments shared on Zigz’ IG.

Aside from giving the rest of us dirtbag standards to look up to, Ziggy also wears many hats here at The Broke Backpacker. From daily admin to serious fiascos, the entire team would be a whole lot worse off without him.

Always fond of a good smoke sesh, you’d also be a fool not to eat up Ziggy’s sage (and thoroughly detailed) advice on the wild, wondrous world of drug tourism!

#2 @Altitude.wanderer

Sima is one epic young lady on a mission to inspire others to hit the road in search of adventure… She’s Iranian and she specialises in MOUNTAINS! Usually, she’s found climbing, hiking and taking photos in high up places.

Her mountain shots are simply stunning and she’s a self-taught photographer so if you’re looking to learn the craft yourself or simply up your game, follow her for plenty of inspiration!

#3 @roamingralph

Ralph Cope aka Roaming Ralph began his career as a traveling content creator but was soon discovered by The Broke Backpacker to be a solid photographer.

He has since worked with the company in developing not only their photography department but also as an official photographer marketing content. We consulted him, of course, on the assembly of this article.

He’s a talented and dedicated landscape photographer who stays true to his craft without playing into the overdone post-processing trends. He’s currently leading tours into the Karakorum Mountains in Skardu and expanding trips into other remote mountain places. Check out this guy!

#4 @intentionaldetours

Besides being one of our beloved team members, Samantha is one of the most offbeat travelers I know. She’s based in Pakistan, and her Instagram account features dope travel photography along with hella’ informative captions.

Instead of continuous selfies, you can find a whole host of portraits, landscapes, shrines and whatever else Samantha happened to find inspiring while adventuring in Pakistan .

Aside from producing epic content here at The Broke Backpacker, Samantha also has her own travel blog and has been published in some pretty impressive travel publications.

#5 @lostwithpurpose

Hands down, Alex is one of the most adventurous solo female travelers I know. She has traveled solo in Pakistan, like me and she knows her shit. She also takes incredible photos and her IG lives are pretty fucking hilarious… I dig her sense of humour. She’s doing pretty amazing things 🙂

#6 @gettingstamped

Hannah and Adam are two globetrotting travel bloggers from the USA. They go to some of the most insane looking places you’ve ever seen. I’m very jealous of their incredible USA travels … I love these guys and we’ve gotten smashed together many a time.

#7 @scottjonphotography

I have never seen a photographer create such sublime and surreal photos like Scott. His photos are beautifully abstract, being mostly aerial… they are unlike anything else on social media.

Even when he isn’t in the air, his groundwork is just as stunning and of has a revelatory quality. Scott is of my favorite photographers and definitely one of the best travel Instagrammers out there.

#8 @elialocardi

Elia is a kind of guru in the travel photography community, one who teaches just as much as he creates. He is a great photographer, to be sure, but more importantly, he is a great educator who supplies eye candy to supplement a good helping of food for thought.

Follow Elia for the occasional morsel of photographic enlightenment and be sure to check out his tutorials with Fstoppers and the like.

#9 @chrisburkard

I suppose no list of the top Instagram travel photographers would be complete without a mention of Chris Burkard, the current darling of the travel photography world. Every photo he puts out, be it from an epic surf trip in the Arctic or one from his backyard in California, is significant.

I personally look forward to every one of Chris’ posts and have no problem saying that he is one of the best travel Instagrammers, hands-down.

Bordering the line between reality and surrealism, Robert creates digital art through his use of photoshop and photography. His posts are dreamy and borderline lucid. He uses a lot of tones between red and yellow.

Robert is one of the best digital art Instagrammers, so check him out!

#11 @ccracken

Lots of travel photographers like to talk about how amazing life can be; few actually talk about how it can all go to shit.

Connor McCracken uses his Instagram to promote open dialogue about mental health problems and how travel can remedy them. He is one of the best travel Instagram photographers because of his candor and sincerity.

#12 @coryrichards

Cory Richards is a legend – a free camera wheelin’ son of a gun with a penchant for wool jackets and perfectly trimmed facial hair.

His photos are among the most narratively rich and dramatic that I’ve seen, blending photojournalism and storytelling with travel, perfectly. He is certainly one of the best travel photographers on Instagram, ever.

#13 @Renan_ozturk

Renan Ozturk received a great deal of attention for his role in Jimmy Chin’s epic Meru . Before the fame, he was a rambler, and, most importantly a damn good painter (think Ansel Adams meets Ralph Steadman). His attention has since shifted to photography and between the two, his Instagram is full of amazing travel moments.

#14 @earthwanderess

Evelina is an eco-travel Instagrammer, dedicated to making travel more sustainable. She’s one of the only travelers making a point to travel without flying in order to keep her carbon footprint minimal.

If you are interested in travel BUT also strive to be a sustainable and conscious human, then give Evelina a follow and follow her advice.

Her content includes adventure travel inspiration, light packing, slow fashion, minimal living, slow travel, zero waste, and more!

#15 @nikkibigger

Nikki is awesome… She’s lived in a van for many years and posts some of the most incredible van-life stuff you’ve ever seen. She’s now working on building an online income whilst driving her brand new, custom made, van all over Canada and the states with her very cute dog. I love Nikki big time and we had a lot of fun hanging out in Thailand together 🙂

#16 @juliathompson

Julia, with the help of her boyfriend, Chris ( chrisrlocke ), is taking the West Coast by storm with their snapshots, which are among the best travel photos on Instagram. Their work is characterized by epic vistas and the intimate moments that they share with it.

Having traveled quite a bit through New Zealand, Asia, and Europe, they’re now back in the PNW.

#17 @stephen_matera

Stephen Matera is one of the most reputable landscape photographers in the United States today. His work has taken him to some of the country’s most magnificent corners, several times over. Every time he posts, he manages to discover something fresh about the US, making

#18 @kyleobermann

In an age where many travel photographers are capturing the same, repetitive photos of the same, growingly-monotonous subjects, a couple of people like Kyle, are managing to be novel.

Working primarily as a conservationist in China, Kyle ventures out into the Chinese wilderness and captures some stunningly original photos. Still untouched by Western tourism, the Chinese wilderness is exotic and Kyle does great justice to it.

#19 @thomaschuphoto

Thomas is perhaps the only fine art landscape photographer (that we know of) that ventures to Pakistan, which is one of our favorite regions!

His work is glorious and is comparable to many of the best travel Instagram photographers out there. He also visits Greenland, Patagonia, Southeast, and many more adventurous destinations.

#20 @jerometheworld

Jerome is currently on an epic trip through Central Asia and is putting out some of his best work yet! With his trusty 4×4 and camera both on hand, he is helping to blaze new trails in a region that sees little tourism. We also appreciate his own self-proclaimed broke backpacker roots 🙂

#21 @sorelleamore

Sorelle is a next level human, and I have been extremely impressed by her depth, wisdom, and humor on what can sometimes be a superficial app…

She is best known for her #advancedselfie; you would never know her photos are taken with a timer and tripod if she didn’t tell you! She shares tutorials and behind the scenes content on YouTube too. You should follow her; everybody should follow her.

#22 @rachel.pohl

Rachel Pohl and her husband @charles_post live and travel around the USA, specifically in the mountains and around Montana, where they hunt, fish, camp, and conserve. Yes, conserve.

Charles is a professional conservationist, and together he and his wife share thought-provoking conversations on Instagram about preserving wild lands and participating in the eco-systems around you.

Rachel is an artist and incredible painter as well. Together, Charles and Rachel’s photos, work, and art are as mesmerizing as they are inspirational.

#23 @marcograssiphotography

Having worked with many of Instagram’s best travel photographers already, Marco is quickly making a name for himself as one of the leaders.

His work is mostly concerned with the mountains and tundras of the Arctic as well as his home in the Dolomites. The landscapes that he creates are near-flawless being both dramatic and vivid. For wilderness photographers, Marco is an inspiration.

#24 @artwolfe

Art Wolfe is one of the great masters of modern travel photography so it makes sense that he’d have one of the best travel Instagram accounts! His work is superlative, celestial, even, and he has set the bar for most of the world’s current travel photographers. No matter what the subject – be it human, animal, or Earth – Art Wolfe is one of the best at capturing them.

#25 @jaydabliu

Joe is a traveling street photographer that has done a great job of bringing style and elegance to otherwise decrepit or oppressive objects. Being raised in Nairobi, Kenya, which is a city with plenty of grit of its own, Joe has had a lot of inspiration and subject matter to work with over the years. For streets artists, Joe is one of the best travel Instagrammers that you can follow.

#26 @federiclagrange

Frederic is a different photographer. His photos are not the most attractive and certainly have a griminess that many find unappealing. Both haze and noise (the photographic kind) are readily apparent in his work, which can be off-putting.

I just can’t help but feel like this guy is refreshing though. Like a good Schopenhauer thesis, Frederic manages to make photography interesting again with the frankness and brutality of his work. Go check out how is style earned his place among the best travel Instagrams.

#27 @andrewstuder

Andrew is a traveling professional who specializes in nature photography and has worked with brands, such as Nat Geo, Yeti, Land Rover, Columbia, and more.

He has accomplished a lot, to be sure, but many photographers in this list have too. Here’s the thing – Andrew is only 21 years old. Fuck, he makes me feel like a wash-up, and I’m not even 30 yet! If we could give Andrew any title, it’d be the best travel Instagram photographer who still has to pay extra for a car rental.

#28 @johnpricephotography

Like much of social media, John Price popped-up on my radar a couple of years ago out of seemingly nowhere. At the time, his photography, which concerned mostly alpinism and climbing, intrigued me.

Unlike most others on social media, he has consistently improved and keeps wowing me. His alpine photography is some of the most dramatic out there, which makes him, deservingly, one of the best travel Instagrammers today.

#29 @jodymacdonaldphoto

Jody is a special photographer who is able to blend narrative, journalism, and aesthetics seamlessly into her photos. Her work is varied but, in my opinion, has a profound sense of isolationism. Many of her subjects: man, beast, or land, feel cut-off from their world, and in doing so achieve a certain beauty.

#30 @rannveigaamodt

For all you rockhounds out there that daydream about that epic send against the most stunning backdrop, Rannveig is the best travel Instagrammer for you.

This girl has journeyed to some of the best climbing sites in the world, like Maiorca, the Chinese Karstlands, and the Norwegian fjords; her photos are stunning. Props to the photographer(s) that she works with, but she’s no slouch behind the lens either.

#31 @bentibbettsphotography

If you are a yeti (like me) who either lives or dreams of being in the mountains 24/7, then there’s no better travel Instagrammer then Ben Tibbetts.

A mountain guide as well as a photographer, Ben mostly stick to the Alps though he constantly finds ways of reimagining these sometimes overly familiar mountains. His work is more akin to portraiture and does a great job of capturing the inner essence of each peak.

#32 @travelfreak

I have a hard time keeping up with this guy because he just goes to some many goddamn countries! Judging from his feed, there are few photographers who are as well traveled and active as this guy. If you’re looking for an account that is consistently churning out diverse and high-quality photos, Jeremey @travelfreak is a great choice.

#33 @shannon__wild

What makes Shannon one of the best travel Instagram photographers? Maybe it’s that winning smile; maybe it’s that charming Aussie accent, or maybe it’s that she’s one of the most active and passionate wildlife photographers on the ‘gram.

We have to admit that Shannon’s wildlife photography is astounding and speaks for her and itself.

#34 @michaelclarkphoto

If I were an outdoor retailer looking to photograph some adventure gear in epic fashion, I would reach out to Michael Clark immediately. This guy does such a good job of getting action shots, particularly those involving water sports.

His images are crispier than a bag of fresh chips and pop with vibrant, yet truthful color. Solid work, Michael.

#35 @dynamoultima

Alex and Cody are digital nomads who travel in their own customized Mercedes van. Aside from their usual gigs (gotta pay the bills somehow), they do a great job of educating people about how they fabricated their vehicle and about what “the van life” is like.

For those curious about what it’s like to live on the road and how to do it themselves, this couple has one of the best travel Instagrams for the nomadic lifestyle.

#36 @rawmeyn

One of the most popular styles of photography these days involves creating photos with subdued and permeating shadows, which is achieved using a technique referred to as “crushing the darks.” The result is a dusky-looking shot with a deep, brooding mood.

Now I don’t know who started this trend but I can tell you who perfected it: Roman Königshofer. For as long as I’ve been following this guy, his work has been stylish and deeply pronounced thanks to his mastery of the shadows. Roman is the best travel Instagrammer for this particular school of photography, in my opinion.

#37 @paleyphoto

This guy is an awesome photojournalist who has the ability to capture some of the most personal photos I’ve seen. Most impressively, he goes to some very off-the-beaten-path places like the Wakhan Corridor and the Karakorum.

If anyone has been to places like these, they will know how difficult it is to capture the local life, either out of lack of cultural comprehension or just being stonewalled. Koodos to Mathieu for doing these people justice.

#38 @michaelgeorge

View this post on Instagram                     Sunlight is scarce in the Financial District. It was built before zoning laws limited buildings from turning streets into lightless canyons. I have always loved how this creates dramatic slices and shapes of harsh sunlight, and I always dreamed of working with dancers to highlight this phenomenon. Luckily, two of my best friends ( @sam_and_brian ) are always willing to help bring my vision to life. A post shared by Michael George (@michaelgeorge) on Oct 19, 2017 at 6:25am PDT

There’s a certain vulnerability to George’s work that I can’t put my finger on. Though his subjects often seem detached or distant in many ways, there’s a certain playfulness to them as well.

Regardless of where Michael goes – he’s primarily based in SoCal – his work is always fresh and I enjoy it quite a lot.

#39 @jackson.groves

Jackson is one of the leading figures in the young travel photography world. He works harder, longer, and in more creative ways than many of his peers and you can see it in his photos. If he’s not showing you some new clean-up campaign, he’s posting an epic shot from some gorgeous island or beach. That’s an Aussie for you, I guess.

#40 @jeffcarlsonphoto

Feeling anxious to get outdoors? Do you have the irrational desire to hang on precarious ledges or over fatal cliffs? Well, Jeff feels the same way! This IGer is all about escaping to the wild places and getting his kicks in, both figuratively, and sometimes literally! Check out his page for some adventure inspiration.

#41 @marco_grilli_

Two traveling Italian lovers rediscover the beauty of their own country – shocking News: Italy is gorgeous – and that of several countries abroad…what’s not to love?

Thankfully, Marco takes beautiful photos, with a dreamy, Barbara Walters-like effect, and often travels to lesser-known places. He is one of the rising stars in social media and soon to be one of the best travel Instagrammers in the business.

If you need some more inspiration for traveling in Italy , check out these love birds!

#42 @difruscia

Patrick has been making rounds in the international photography world for some time and has definitely established himself as one of the best working travel Instagrammers. He is primarily a landscape photographer and has a great eye for composition and dramatic lighting. He is definitely one of the best travel Instagrams if you’re interested in fine art photography.

#43 @bejamin

View this post on Instagram                     Passing shapes in the desert… Inspiration is an important part of the creative process. We build on each other’s work, we add our uniqueness to the conversation, and attempt to move it forward. This week on @imaginarymagnitude, I’m sharing a few photos that cause me to pause, listen, think, and hopefully create in ways that are not derivative, but cumulative. . #imaginarymagnitude A post shared by Benjamin Everett (@bejamin) on Jul 5, 2017 at 6:46pm PDT

Benjamin’s work is not like the usual travel photographers who shoot sweeping landscapes or romantic getaways. Instead, his photos are very abstract, surreal in a way because of their color palette and composition. He is so unorthodox that I think his work belongs in an art show more so than a travel Instagram page.

#44 @jaydickmanphoto

Jay is a fantastic photojournalist who has captured some of the most unique and downright dizzying photos that I have seen on Instagram. Somehow, someway, Jay is able to capture singular moments in the midst of what looks like sheer chaos.

His portraits are ecstatic, his wildlife photos are dynamic, and his still lifes are revelatory. All-in-all, he is definitely one of the best travel Instagrams that you can follow.

#45 @everchanginghorizon

Quinn AKA @everchanginghorizon is another leader in the travel photography community that seems to be everywhere at once. His work is epic and dramatic sometimes but it never takes itself too seriously.

Like the wanderer that he is, Quin’s photography is joyous and free. His hard work has definitely earned him the right to be called one of the best Instagram travelers today.

#46 @roundtheworldgirl

Much like @everchanginghorizon, Elise AKA @roundtheworldgirl just appears to be a lady having fun with her camera. Granted, she’s traveled to lots of amazing places and has taken some equally amazing photos, but I guess that’s why she’s one of the best travel Instagrammers right now. If only we could all be as carefree and wild as Elise.

#47 @jimmy_chin

Jimmy Chin has become an icon of sorts in the adventure community. From skiing to climbing to photography to filmmaking, his work spans multiple mediums and multiple subjects. Jimmy Chin can seemingly do it all, capturing incredible adventures through his camera lens.

He is an inspiration to all fledgling adventure enthusiasts and definitely one of the best Instagram travel photographers working today.

#48 @truthslinger

There’s an edginess to Mutua Matheka that I really enjoy. With the intense use of primary colors, the likes of which reminds me of arthouse directors like Nicolas Winding Refn, and sometimes harsh lighting, Mutua creates some very visceral photos. For those looking for something more stylized than the other travel photographers, this guy runs one of the best travel Instagrams for you.

#49 @jonathan_irish

Jonathan is a Nat Geo photographer who does a bit of everything and does it all well, of course. Chases through the Savannah? Check. Epic mountains? Check. Underwater selfies? Check. Check.

To those who like to see a bit of variation in their favorite travel Instagram profiles, Johnathan is one of the best that you can find.

#50 @priyanka_onmycanvas

A solo woman traveler from India, Priyanka is an inspirational traveler breaking down barriers with her stories, and beautiful, raw photos. I have a special place in my heart for solo travelers who travel to adventurous places like Pakistan and India (her home country). She has a way of showing you the authentic people and places in a country, not just the cookie-cutter versions of travel.

Priyanka’s uses HDR and saturates her photos, but her work still remains genuine and artistic. She has a good eye and captures emotion in her photos.

Sam Johnson

best travel social media accounts

My passion for photography was something that I also had when I was a child. I would find different ways to get a free version of Photoshop on my old Toshiba computer and edit all the random photos that I would take. As I moved into college, I let that passion grow distant. This is one of the biggest things I wish I could go back and reverse. I let it go because I was trying to fit a mold. Go to college, get a degree and start a career. That is what was preached to me. I didn’t see photography or digital creation as a career at the time.

I started experimenting with photography when I was eight years old using my father´s old camera. When I was thirteen, my father gave me my first SLR camera, a Nikon F70. How to Make the Best Travel Instagram Reels, According to Social Media Influencers

How to Make the Best Travel Instagram Reels According to Social Media Influencers

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

No matter where you're traveling in the world, you'll want to take some of those memories back with you. And if you love capturing them on Instagram , you're in luck. Condé Nast Traveller India spoke to some of the best travel creators in South Asia—including Larissa D’sa , Wander with Sky’s Aakash Malhotra , Savi and Vid of Bruised Passports, Siddhartha Joshi , and Revati and Charles Victor of Different Doors—for their tips on creating travel Reels for Instagram and putting your best foot forward on the Explore page. Here is your ultimate guide to making the next viral travel Reel.

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

How do you start making a travel Reel for Instagram?

Malhotra begins with a clear-cut plan when making a Reel. “When crafting a compelling travel Reel, there are five key principles to bear in mind,” he says. “Prioritize high-quality footage and unique perspectives. Weave a narrative: Keep it personal and authentic. Emotions over beauty: Capture the essence of the locale. Audio is king: Choose complementary soundtracks. And lastly, timing matters: Share high-resolution content within the optimal timeframe.”

Savi and Vid stress that the video needs to be representative of the experience you are having or want viewers to have: “Be it a place you’re traveling to or somewhere you’re dining ! It needs to be impactful. If you can capture the audience within the first half, then that’s a sure-shot winner. Trending music is a no-brainer.”

For D’sa, it needs to feel authentic and real. “I have to keep it authentic, else it's not me,” she says. “Going viral should never be the reason to make a Reel. When you are truly enjoying yourself in a video, it shows. And that joy is infectious. Even though the quality of the video is of utmost importance, having fun and looking beyond trends is the key.”

Revati and Charles suggest being clear on what you are trying to communicate. “Some useful information ? A beautiful view? It’s then easier to make decisions while shooting, rather than ending up with a lot of footage that you don’t really like or can use.” They also recommend being the face of your Reel. “Don’t be afraid or shy to get in front of the camera! And talk. People love listening to people and seeing their faces to be able to put a face to the voice.”

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

What equipment do you use to make a travel Reel?

“When it comes to crafting cinematic Reels, my go-to gear includes the iPhone 14 Pro,” says Malhotra. However, he also relies on a versatile array of equipment to elevate his content. “I use the Sony Alpha ZV-E1 for vlogs, accompanied by a selection of lenses tailored to specific needs. The DJI Mavic 3 takes care of breathtaking aerial shots, while the DJI Avata provides wide-angle drone shots. In addition, my trusty GoPro HERO 12 swoops in to capture all the action.”

D’sa says, “95% of my Reels are shot on camera. But an iPhone camera is good enough to start.” While Savi and Vid use a full-frame camera, their phones, and a tripod to make their Reels with a multi-camera setup. Joshi also uses his iPhone camera to film most videos.

For Revati and Charles, it depends on the situation at hand. “Our trusted Sony a7R III camera is for when we need stellar footage." An iPhone camera works for easy shots; a Hollyland Lark Wireless Microphone for clear voice-overs, and to talk over distances.

Malhotra says, “If you're embarking on your journey as a travel Reel creator on Instagram, you'll be pleased to know that an iPhone is your all-in-one solution. In fact, it's the only equipment I believe you truly need.” Revati and Charles add, “The best camera is the one you already have and know how to use ! It’s simple, shoots some great footage and doesn’t have a steep learning curve. There are people who’ve shot such fabulous films with just their phones!”

Savi and Vid suggest you add a portable ring light to your kit to make closeup shots look instantly better.

Which apps or software do you use to edit videos?

“To fine-tune my masterpieces, I turn to a variety of editing tools. On my laptop, I rely on Final Cut Pro for comprehensive edits. When on the move, VN Video Editor is my choice for mobile editing, and I also harness the native Instagram Reels tab for those final touches,” says Malhotra.

Joshi also suggests the VN Video Editor app for edits on the go: “For those just starting out, simplicity is the key to success. You can accomplish most of your edits using the Instagram app itself. Remember, consistency is the linchpin of growth. Begin there, and venture into more advanced editing techniques as you go.”

For Savi and Vid, Adobe Premiere Pro takes the cake. “I enjoy playing around with fonts, grading, and colors. There are countless phone-friendly apps like InShot and Filmm that are great for beginners or for established creators to edit on the go.” D’sa uses Premiere Pro on her laptop too, but she prefers InShot for on-phone editing. “Though it might sound time-consuming, I would always recommend learning desktop-based software before one on a phone. That truly makes learning the process on the phone quicker. I personally started with Adobe Premiere on my laptop, but there is DaVinci Resolve , which is arguably the best and has a free version too.”

Revati and Charles use a MacBook Pro to edit. “It helps to have an SSD drive and a large-capacity Drobo to archive can save and access all the footage for later use. Of course, sometimes it’s as simple as shooting with your phone and editing on it, either with templates or with editing apps like VLLO . The edit must roughly be in your head before you shoot. Our 35-odd years of collective experience in shooting commercial films have etched that in our minds. Take people through a journey or discovery. Every piece of content is a story, even just info-dispensing ones! As a process, do a rough lineup, without worrying about the exact points you want to cut. If it makes sense, then begin cutting precisely. Walk away from it for a bit, and you will often return with great ideas. If you have a voice-over, having that in place with your rough cut will tell you whether you need fewer or more words. The superimposed text should be limited to just the few things you want to emphasize.”

What’s the key to a catchy caption on Instagram?

“Try to be unique with your words, and don’t be afraid to make it emotional. That’s when you will be able to create an interesting caption that connects with your audience,” says D’sa. While Joshi says, “Treat each reel differently. Ideally, keep it short, but in some cases, you might need to add more information in the description that wasn't in the reel, or cue to a bigger story.”

Savi and Vid aren’t afraid to keep their captions bulky: “We’ve always been storytellers, so we love writing long and meaningful captions. I would say one should go with their instinct while penning captions. If you enjoy short and impactful captions, go the one-line route! But if words give you joy or you have valuable information to share, write a lengthy descriptive one.”

“Don’t forget to provide any context or background info that you couldn’t add in the reel,” say Revati and Charles. “Ask a question—it’s great to get more engagement and comments. Write in your own voice, and make sure you don’t use phrases that you’d never utter. Use hashtags and keywords for added discoverability, and put relevant information in (cost, location, timings, etc). Lastly, since it’s happened to us, please don’t copy someone else’s caption!”

Malhotra adds, “Crafting an engaging caption is an art in itself. Here's the secret: Keep it concise and relatable. Always remember, that your caption serves as the second point of engagement. This means that if someone enjoys what they see in your reel, they'll be inclined to delve deeper into your caption. So, make your caption an extension of the story your video tells.”

What shouldn't you do when making travel videos?

“Make sure your content isn’t being uploaded in low-resolution. Remember that timing is everything. Don't post when your potential audience is catching the z's and try avoiding non-trending audios,” says Malhotra.

Savi and Vid suggest that you do not “overdo the filters and colors, as overly processed reels tend not to do well. Avoid too much text [on the video itself]. It gets tough to read and people love watching and listening more than reading. And don’t just copy trends mindlessly. If it’s you, then go for it.”

Joshi says, “Copying someone else’s style might work for a while, but you need to develop your own aesthetic. We personally feel there are no strict no's, except reels promoting irresponsible behavior that can cause societal harm, such as littering in public places, ignoring driving rules to film sensational content, or reinforcing sexist stereotypes,” say Savi and Vid.

Revati and Charles add, “Just post. Don’t wait to gold-plate it. The more you do it, the better you’ll get. Don’t worry so much about what people are going to think or how you look. You’re forgotten at the start of the next reel!”

best travel social media accounts

One of the great topics that we can visualize in the world of social networks is, of course, travel. Many are the creators who dedicate their content to show each of the places they visit to make them known. After making many compilations of different types of content on our website, today we wanted to dedicate this article precisely to this sector. And, if you want to discover new places to go on your next vacation, you should take a look at these travel accounts on instagram .

Travel through Instagram, is it a good idea?

best travel social media accounts

This question may be the one that is going through your mind right now. And more seeing that many creators share their trips to the Maldives, Riviera Maya or paradisiacal places like that. And the truth is that yes, we can find great places to go throughout the world thanks to this social network.

The vast majority of travel content is dedicated to posting some of the most idyllic locations in the world, but if we dig a little between some of these accounts, we can find locations suitable for all budgets. And, if even so, these continue to escape our purchasing power, we can always choose to enjoy the photographs and videos of these traveling creators while we raise the necessary money for our next adventure.

Best travel accounts on Instagram

With that said, now is the time to show you our compilation of some of the best travel accounts on all of Instagram.

One detail that we wanted to tell you about is that, in order to give a voice to all kinds of creators, we wanted to have profiles from millions of subscribers to some with a "few thousand" followers. That, although they also seem like big numbers, next to the other accounts they are not so big.

Murad Osman ( @muradosmann )

best travel social media accounts

The first of the travel accounts that we want to talk about is, in turn, one of the most popular on all of Instagram. It is the profile of murad ossman who, together with their partner, travel around the world already impacting almost 4 million users through this social network. The moment of her explosion was with one of the first photographs of her in which he shook hands with her, an act that (in addition to his great captures and her work) have led him to become very well-known in networks. A format that was invented by them and that, nowadays, is almost a common capture in many travel bloggers.

The Bucket List Family ( @thebucketlistfamily )

best travel social media accounts

On the other hand we have the content created by the Gee family, more known as The Bucket List Family . The spouses of this couple met on a trip to Russia and, since then, they have traveled the world and shown it through their Instagram profile. Of course, as their children have been born, they have been included in this adventure. Currently this traveling family has more than 2,6 millions of followers and rising by leaps and bounds thanks to its good royo and its quality content.

JACK MORRIS ( @doyoutravel )

best travel social media accounts

If you like travel content, surely, at some point, you have come across one of the impressive captures of Jack Morris . Also, if you are one of those who enjoys photographs more than normal, you will love to see your feed with a fairly careful and homogeneous aesthetic. As of today, Jack already has 2,5 million followers through this social network.

Lauren Bullen ( @gypsea_lust )

best travel social media accounts

The creator Lauren Bullen is the clear example of an influencer who enjoys her work enormously. She loves traveling, fashion and showing her day-to-day life through her profile stories. You will still see her walking around Italy, in the deserts of the United Arab Emirates or at her house in Greece, but this girl is a "restless ass" and she is always from here to there sharing her passion on the networks her. Currently her profile already has almost 2 million followers On Instagram.

Alan for the World ( @alanxelmundo )

best travel social media accounts

For his part, Alan is the first Spanish-speaking creator to land on this compilation, although he is also known for being a famous actor on the other side of the pond, in this sector he prefers to be identified on his own from Alan for the World . It is about a Mexican who began his adventures with a trip to India and, from that moment, he discovered the great passion of sharing his experiences knowing different places throughout the world. At this time, his account reaches the staggering number of 1,5 million followers in this social network.

Marie & Jake | Love & Travel ( @mariefeandjakesnow )

best travel social media accounts

We continue with Marie & Jake , the couple in charge of giving life to the Mariefeandjakesnow account. Thanks to sharing their experiences, the love between them and their passion for travel, they have created a community that already exceeds the million followers On Instagram. You will be able to see this German and this Australian traveling all over the world from France, Bali or Greece. Does this couple of influencers make us a little envious? It can, but your content takes a lot of work and effort behind each photo or video.

Nicanor Garcia ( @nicanorgarcia )

best travel social media accounts

We now move on to profiles with less than 1 million followers. Specifically, the first one we want to talk about is nicanor garcia which, currently, already adds 752 thousand followers on this social network. This is the profile of a Catalan photographer who is passionate about architecture and who shows it through his Instagram account. In it you will be able to see incredible places from different parts of Spain such as others as wonderful as Porto or Petra.

Jethro Mullen ( @jethromullen )

best travel social media accounts

Another very interesting creator is Jethro Mullen . This is a CNN journalist who currently resides in Hong Kong. Through his profile we will be able to know many super interesting places throughout Asia, as well as many other places in the world. His profile adds up to more than 670 thousand travel lovers .

Street Travelers ( @viajeroscallejeros )

best travel social media accounts

We continue with another couple who, in this case, are two Spaniards who are lucky (thanks to their hard work) to make a living from what they like the most: travel. Both through their networks and their own blog, you share their experiences and the amazing landscapes and things they get to know. Something super curious about the profile of Street travelers , which already has almost 230 thousand followers , is that they always share in their biography the journey they are making at every moment.

Zak Shelhamer @zakshelhamer )

If you like adventures, extreme sports and seeing spectacular landscapes, you should follow zak shelhamer . Today it already adds up 140 thousand followers On this social network, they enjoy the amazing photos and videos of this young man.

Marianne Hope ( @mariannehope )

best travel social media accounts

To close this collection, it is time to cross the barrier of those accounts with less than 100 followers on this social network, without detracting from their work (quite the opposite, we want to give them the voice they deserve).

The first of the two accounts that we want you to know about is that of Marianne Hope . A Norwegian photographer who uses all of her creativity to create eye-catching photos of her travels and post them on her Instagram account. She currently has almost 82 thousand lovers of travel and photography among his followers.

Tim Clark ( @timclark1 )

best travel social media accounts

Last but not least, you should meet this wonderful photographer named Tim Clark . An Australian who shares incredible places through his account for those who enjoy traveling with a lot of adventure. The Role of Social Media in Travel Marketing: Best Practices and Case Studies

Back in 2016, then Marriott’s chief global marketing officer, Karin Timpone spoke to CNBC about their social media travel marketing service and incorporation of geo-fencing technology.

If someone posts a photo from one of its properties, her team will reach out and contact the front desk to let them know. The hotel will often then reach out to the customers and offer complimentary upgrades — something to show that Marriott values their presence.

Earlier, a music video for “I’ll Show You” featuring Justin Bieber at the Fjadrárgljúfur canyon in Iceland. A few years later, tourism to this once-quiet town nearly doubled. The video on YouTube has over 500 million views since 2015.

Given the general rise in income levels and jobs going remote, people find more time to take frequent travel breaks, showcasing the need for effective digital marketing services to tap into the growing travel market

And social media has only accentuated this trend ,

  • By hosting engaging travel content and motivating reviews
  • By increasing travel FOMO (Fear-Of-Missing-Out)
  • By minimizing unpleasant surprises at the destination

Given the scope of social media in travel marketing services , this blog discusses best practices followed by interesting case studies for inspiration.

The Power of Social Media in Travel Marketing

  • Expedia’s 2023 Traveler Value Index noted almost 35% of travelers turn to social media for holiday inspiration.
  • Furthermore, 75% of respondents chose a specific destination inspired by social media as per Amex’s 2023 Global Travel Trends Report .
  • Travel Live Streaming is becoming increasingly popular on social media, with 60% of travelers saying they have watched a live stream of a travel experience.
  • 74% of travelers use social media while traveling, while 92% of consumers trust word of mouth and UGC more than other forms of advertising, thus making UGC on social media crucial for any travel marketing campaign.

Best Practices for Successful Social Media Travel Marketing

Top 5 things travelers use social media to research – Destinations, Hotels, Activities, Attractions, and Restaurants. Let’s list out travel marketing best practices to get the most attention from social media users.

Choosing the Right Platforms

B2B travel marketing

Take a que from social media strategy of Marriott Hotels . Their Instagram account features stunning photos of their hotels, while their Twitter account is more focused on sharing news and updates.

Invest in high-quality, visually appealing content, including photos and videos. Use storytelling techniques to capture the essence of your travel experiences.

Encourage user-generated content (UGC) by running contests or using branded hashtags. UGC refers to any content that is created and shared by users or consumers of a product, service, or brand rather than by the company or organization itself.

Travel marketers can leverage UGC in the following way:

  • Display UGC on their social channels to engage other users as it signals authenticity.
  • Monitoring UGC can become your informal market research to upgrade your services in-time.
  • UGC also helps build employer brand which results in team retention.

Furthermore, you may leverage the new YouTube app feature that lists video recommendations according to thumbnail color. As a travel marketer, you can explore more such strategies to increase views on YouTube here .

The Role of Social Media in Travel Marketing Best Practices and Case Studies Example 3 - ColorWhistle

Highlight safety measures and sustainable practices in your travel marketing, as these have become critical concerns for travelers post-pandemic.

Take inspiration from our previous blog where we have discussed Innovative Travel Marketing Campaigns From Around The World .

In a bid to blindly replicate brand marketing successes on social media, many end up creating “self-congratulating” content.

Recreating trendy content give a false impression to the marketing team about better reach. The truth beholds, unless original thought is put to market product/service, the social media marketing will lead to poor brand awareness, let alone lead generation.

Consistency is Key. Develop a content calendar to maintain a consistent posting schedule. Consistency helps keep your audience engaged and informed.

Share travel stories, itineraries, and personal experiences. Storytelling creates a deeper connection with your audience. Use live streaming feature to promote your brand often. Learn more tips on travel live streaming here .

You can use hashtag strategy to expand your content’s reach. Create a branded hashtag for your campaigns and encourage followers to use it.

However, we feel social media hashtags are overused. Hashtags are annoying and they hijack conversations. Moreover, users may relate social media posts with many hashtags as spam.

Here is an interesting blog by Hannah Macready where she discusses the best use of hashtags for your social media campaigns in 2024 and beyond.

Partner with social media influencers who align with your brand and target audience. Influencers can provide authentic recommendations and reach new followers.

Look for long-term association with the right content creator on social media for consistent engagement of new and existing users. Influencer marketing tools like Ylytics , HypeAuditor , and others can help you find the right social media influencers.

How Travel Marketers Want People to Search on Google?

The Role of Social Media in Travel Marketing Best Practices and Case Studies - ColorWhistle

Enter a search query -> Your brand website ad appears -> Book your services

But How Do People Actually Search?

Enter a search query -> Google analyzes and displays results per keyword -> Visitor clicks -> Interrupted by WhatsApp chat -> Sleeps.

… a week later…

Notices a display ad from your brand -> Visits the landing page -> Bookmarks it -> Checks out the brand profile on Instagram -> Share it with spouse -> Logs out

Challenges and Pitfalls in Social Media Travel Marketing

Social media travel marketing offers significant opportunities, but it also comes with various challenges and potential pitfalls that marketers should be aware of, like

  • Platform Algorithm Changes: Social media platforms frequently update their algorithms, affecting organic reach and engagement. Marketers need to adapt strategies to stay visible to their audience.
  • Privacy and Data Protection: Stricter privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR) require marketers to handle user data responsibly. Mismanagement can lead to legal issues and reputational damage.
  • Ad Saturation: Social media users may become overwhelmed with advertising, leading to ad fatigue. Marketers must strike a balance between promotion and providing value to the audience.
  • Language and Cultural Sensitivity: Misinterpretations or insensitivity to local languages and cultures can lead to backlash. Marketers must research and tailor content appropriately for different regions.
  • Changing Travel Behavior: Travel behaviors and preferences change over time, influenced by various factors like technology, health concerns, and economic conditions. Marketers need to stay updated and adapt accordingly.
  • Over-Tourism Concerns: Social media can contribute to over-tourism by popularizing specific destinations or attractions, leading to overcrowding and environmental issues. Travel marketers must promote responsible tourism.

Teens and social media: Key findings from Pew Research Center surveys

Laughing twin sisters looking at smartphone in park on summer evening

For the latest survey data on social media and tech use among teens, see “ Teens, Social Media, and Technology 2023 .”

Today’s teens are navigating a digital landscape unlike the one experienced by their predecessors, particularly when it comes to the pervasive presence of social media. In 2022, Pew Research Center fielded an in-depth survey asking American teens – and their parents – about their experiences with and views toward social media . Here are key findings from the survey:

Pew Research Center conducted this study to better understand American teens’ experiences with social media and their parents’ perception of these experiences. For this analysis, we surveyed 1,316 U.S. teens ages 13 to 17, along with one parent from each teen’s household. The survey was conducted online by Ipsos from April 14 to May 4, 2022.

This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, which is an independent committee of experts that specializes in helping to protect the rights of research participants.

Ipsos invited panelists who were a parent of at least one teen ages 13 to 17 from its KnowledgePanel , a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses, to take this survey. For some of these questions, parents were asked to think about one teen in their household. (If they had multiple teenage children ages 13 to 17 in the household, one was randomly chosen.) This teen was then asked to answer questions as well. The parent portion of the survey is weighted to be representative of U.S. parents of teens ages 13 to 17 by age, gender, race, ethnicity, household income and other categories. The teen portion of the survey is weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with parents by age, gender, race, ethnicity, household income and other categories.

Here are the questions used  for this report, along with responses, and its  methodology .

Majorities of teens report ever using YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat. YouTube is the platform most commonly used by teens, with 95% of those ages 13 to 17 saying they have ever used it, according to a Center survey conducted April 14-May 4, 2022, that asked about 10 online platforms. Two-thirds of teens report using TikTok, followed by roughly six-in-ten who say they use Instagram (62%) and Snapchat (59%). Much smaller shares of teens say they have ever used Twitter (23%), Twitch (20%), WhatsApp (17%), Reddit (14%) and Tumblr (5%).

A chart showing that since 2014-15 TikTok has started to rise, Facebook usage has dropped, Instagram and Snapchat have grown.

Facebook use among teens dropped from 71% in 2014-15 to 32% in 2022. Twitter and Tumblr also experienced declines in teen users during that span, but Instagram and Snapchat saw notable increases.

TikTok use is more common among Black teens and among teen girls. For example, roughly eight-in-ten Black teens (81%) say they use TikTok, compared with 71% of Hispanic teens and 62% of White teens. And Hispanic teens (29%) are more likely than Black (19%) or White teens (10%) to report using WhatsApp. (There were not enough Asian teens in the sample to analyze separately.)

Teens’ use of certain social media platforms also varies by gender. Teen girls are more likely than teen boys to report using TikTok (73% vs. 60%), Instagram (69% vs. 55%) and Snapchat (64% vs. 54%). Boys are more likely than girls to report using YouTube (97% vs. 92%), Twitch (26% vs. 13%) and Reddit (20% vs. 8%).

A chart showing that teen girls are more likely than boys to use TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat. Teen boys are more likely to use Twitch, Reddit and YouTube. Black teens are especially drawn to TikTok compared with other groups.

Majorities of teens use YouTube and TikTok every day, and some report using these sites almost constantly. About three-quarters of teens (77%) say they use YouTube daily, while a smaller majority of teens (58%) say the same about TikTok. About half of teens use Instagram (50%) or Snapchat (51%) at least once a day, while 19% report daily use of Facebook.

A chart that shows roughly one-in-five teens are almost constantly on YouTube, and 2% say the same for Facebook.

Some teens report using these platforms almost constantly. For example, 19% say they use YouTube almost constantly, while 16% and 15% say the same about TikTok and Snapchat, respectively.

More than half of teens say it would be difficult for them to give up social media. About a third of teens (36%) say they spend too much time on social media, while 55% say they spend about the right amount of time there and just 8% say they spend too little time. Girls are more likely than boys to say they spend too much time on social media (41% vs. 31%).

A chart that shows 54% of teens say it would be hard to give up social media.

Teens are relatively divided over whether it would be hard or easy for them to give up social media. Some 54% say it would be very or somewhat hard, while 46% say it would be very or somewhat easy.

Girls are more likely than boys to say it would be difficult for them to give up social media (58% vs. 49%). Older teens are also more likely than younger teens to say this: 58% of those ages 15 to 17 say it would be very or somewhat hard to give up social media, compared with 48% of those ages 13 to 14.

Teens are more likely to say social media has had a negative effect on others than on themselves. Some 32% say social media has had a mostly negative effect on people their age, while 9% say this about social media’s effect on themselves.

A chart showing that more teens say social media has had a negative effect on people their age than on them, personally.

Conversely, teens are more likely to say these platforms have had a mostly positive impact on their own life than on those of their peers. About a third of teens (32%) say social media has had a mostly positive effect on them personally, while roughly a quarter (24%) say it has been positive for other people their age.

Still, the largest shares of teens say social media has had neither a positive nor negative effect on themselves (59%) or on other teens (45%). These patterns are consistent across demographic groups.

Teens are more likely to report positive than negative experiences in their social media use. Majorities of teens report experiencing each of the four positive experiences asked about: feeling more connected to what is going on in their friends’ lives (80%), like they have a place where they can show their creative side (71%), like they have people who can support them through tough times (67%), and that they are more accepted (58%).

A chart that shows teen girls are more likely than teen boys to say social media makes them feel more supported but also overwhelmed by drama and excluded by their friends.

When it comes to negative experiences, 38% of teens say that what they see on social media makes them feel overwhelmed because of all the drama. Roughly three-in-ten say it makes them feel like their friends are leaving them out of things (31%) or feel pressure to post content that will get lots of comments or likes (29%). And 23% say that what they see on social media makes them feel worse about their own life.

There are several gender differences in the experiences teens report having while on social media. Teen girls are more likely than teen boys to say that what they see on social media makes them feel a lot like they have a place to express their creativity or like they have people who can support them. However, girls also report encountering some of the pressures at higher rates than boys. Some 45% of girls say they feel overwhelmed because of all the drama on social media, compared with 32% of boys. Girls are also more likely than boys to say social media has made them feel like their friends are leaving them out of things (37% vs. 24%) or feel worse about their own life (28% vs. 18%).

When it comes to abuse on social media platforms, many teens think criminal charges or permanent bans would help a lot. Half of teens think criminal charges or permanent bans for users who bully or harass others on social media would help a lot to reduce harassment and bullying on these platforms.

A chart showing that half of teens think banning users who bully or criminal charges against them would help a lot in reducing the cyberbullying teens may face on social media.

About four-in-ten teens say it would help a lot if social media companies proactively deleted abusive posts or required social media users to use their real names and pictures. Three-in-ten teens say it would help a lot if school districts monitored students’ social media activity for bullying or harassment.

Some teens – especially older girls – avoid posting certain things on social media because of fear of embarrassment or other reasons. Roughly four-in-ten teens say they often or sometimes decide not to post something on social media because they worry people might use it to embarrass them (40%) or because it does not align with how they like to represent themselves on these platforms (38%). A third of teens say they avoid posting certain things out of concern for offending others by what they say, while 27% say they avoid posting things because it could hurt their chances when applying for schools or jobs.

A chart that shows older teen girls are more likely than younger girls or boys to say they don't post things on social media because they're worried it could be used to embarrass them.

These concerns are more prevalent among older teen girls. For example, roughly half of girls ages 15 to 17 say they often or sometimes decide not to post something on social media because they worry people might use it to embarrass them (50%) or because it doesn’t fit with how they’d like to represent themselves on these sites (51%), compared with smaller shares among younger girls and among boys overall.

Many teens do not feel like they are in the driver’s seat when it comes to controlling what information social media companies collect about them. Six-in-ten teens say they think they have little (40%) or no control (20%) over the personal information that social media companies collect about them. Another 26% aren’t sure how much control they have. Just 14% of teens think they have a lot of control.

Two charts that show a majority of teens feel as if they have little to no control over their data being collected by social media companies, but only one-in-five are extremely or very concerned about the amount of information these sites have about them.

Despite many feeling a lack of control, teens are largely unconcerned about companies collecting their information. Only 8% are extremely concerned about the amount of personal information that social media companies might have and 13% are very concerned. Still, 44% of teens say they have little or no concern about how much these companies might know about them.

Only around one-in-five teens think their parents are highly worried about their use of social media. Some 22% of teens think their parents are extremely or very worried about them using social media. But a larger share of teens (41%) think their parents are either not at all (16%) or a little worried (25%) about them using social media. About a quarter of teens (27%) fall more in the middle, saying they think their parents are somewhat worried.

A chart showing that only a minority of teens say their parents are extremely or very worried about their social media use.

Many teens also believe there is a disconnect between parental perceptions of social media and teens’ lived realities. Some 39% of teens say their experiences on social media are better than parents think, and 27% say their experiences are worse. A third of teens say parents’ views are about right.

Nearly half of parents with teens (46%) are highly worried that their child could be exposed to explicit content on social media. Parents of teens are more likely to be extremely or very concerned about this than about social media causing mental health issues like anxiety, depression or lower self-esteem. Some parents also fret about time management problems for their teen stemming from social media use, such as wasting time on these sites (42%) and being distracted from completing homework (38%).

A chart that shows parents are more likely to be concerned about their teens seeing explicit content on social media than these sites leading to anxiety, depression or lower self-esteem.

Note: Here are the questions used  for this report, along with responses, and its  methodology .

CORRECTION (May 17, 2023): In a previous version of this post, the percentages of teens using Instagram and Snapchat daily were transposed in the text. The original chart was correct. This change does not substantively affect the analysis.

John Deere will pay up to $192K for a 'Chief Tractor Officer' to travel and help launch TikTok channel

  • John Deere is looking for a different kind of CTO — a Chief Tractor Officer.
  • The winner of the competition will help launch the agriculture equipment company's new TikTok channel.
  • Entries are accepted until April 29, with the finalists selected after May 17.

Insider Today

Agriculture equipment company John Deere is on the hunt for a different kid of CTO.

The brand on Tuesday announced a two-week search to find a "Chief Tractor Officer" who would create social media content to reach younger consumers .

One winning applicant will receive up to $192,300 to traverse the country over the next several months showcasing the way John Deere products are used by workers, from Yellowstone National Park to Chicago's Wrigley Field and beyond.

"No matter what you do — whether it's your coffee, getting dressed in the morning, driving to work, the building you go into — it's all been touched by a construction worker, a farmer, or a lawn care maintenance group," Jen Hartmann, John Deere's global director of strategic public relations, told AdAge .

To kick off the search, John Deere tapped NFL quarterback Brock Purdy (who will presumably be a bit busy this Fall to take the job himself) to star in a clip in which he attempts to set out on a road trip in an industrial tractor.

Suited up in the obligatory vest, work boots, and John Deere hat, Purdy's progress is interrupted by teammate Colton McKivitz hopping into the cab while a string of messages floods in from other athletes and influencers expressing interest in the job.

The clip also represents the first time that the 187-year-old company has used celebrities to promote itself, Hartmann told AdAge.

According to the contest rules , entrants have until April 29 at midnight to submit a single 60-second video making their pitch for why they should be the face and voice of the company.

In addition, entrants must live in the 48 contiguous states or DC — sorry Hawaii and Alaska residents. Interestingly, any AI-generated submissions are prohibited, too.

Videos will be judged against four categories — originally, creativity, quality, and brand knowledge — after which five finalists will be chosen and notified after May 17.

A Life Overtaken by Conspiracy Theories Explodes in Flames as the Public Looks On

Friends of Max Azzarello, who set himself on fire outside Donald J. Trump’s trial, said he was a caring person whose paranoia had led him down a dark path.

Leaflets are scattered on the ground or fluttering in the air on a plaza that it partially closed off with metal barriers and yellow caution tape.

By Michael Wilson ,  Tracey Tully and Jan Ransom

The journey that ended with a man setting himself on fire on Friday outside the Manhattan courthouse where Donald J. Trump was being tried seemed to have begun in Florida, with a series of increasingly bizarre outbursts.

Standing in the afternoon chill, the man, Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla., threw pamphlets into the air before dousing himself with an accelerant and setting his body ablaze. The police hurried to extinguish the flames, and he was taken to a hospital burn unit, gravely injured. He died on Friday night.

The fire just a block or two from the courthouse appeared calculated to draw widespread attention, horrifying bystanders and temporarily overshadowing the momentous trial of a former president.

But a closer look at the path the man had traveled to this moment of self-destruction revealed a recent spiral into volatility, one marked by a worldview that had become increasingly confusing and disjointed — and appeared to be unattached to any political party. His social media postings and arrest records suggest the immolation stemmed instead from a place of conspiracy theories and paranoia.

Until last summer, Mr. Azzarello seemed to have lived a relatively quiet life. After high school, where he was a member of a bowling team, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2009, with degrees in anthropology and public policy.

As a student at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., where he received a master’s degree in city and regional planning in 2012, he was known for leaving supportive Post-it notes for classmates in the hallways and for his karaoke performances of Frank Sinatra and Disney tunes, said a former classmate, Katie Brennan.

“He was super curious about social justice and the way things ‘could’ be,” Ms. Brennan said. “He was creative and adventurous.”

He began a career in which, according to his LinkedIn profile, he moved among jobs in marketing, sales and technology. In 2013, he worked on the campaign of Representative Tom Suozzi of Long Island, who was then running for Nassau County executive.

An old friend from high school, Steven Waldman, called Mr. Azzarello one of the smartest people he knew.

“He was a good friend and person and cared about the world,” he said.

But there was cause for concern, too.

By last year, he had apparently settled in St. Augustine, where he lived in a modest apartment near the Matanzas River in that historic city. He was a pleasant if sometimes peculiar neighbor.

“An extremely nice person,” said Larry Altman, the property manager at his apartment building, who added: “He had political views that I would not consider mainstream. He called our government and the world government a Ponzi scheme.”

But there were no signs that he was harboring an urge to harm himself, Mr. Altman said.

“If you met Max, he’d shake your hand, and you’d have a nice conversation,” he said. “He’d treat you with respect.”

He was clearly deeply affected by the loss of his mother, however. Elizabeth Azzarello died on April 6, 2022, near Sea Cliff, N.Y., on Long Island, where she had fought pulmonary disease, Mr. Azzarello wrote on Instagram in April 2022.

“I am immensely proud to say that she navigated the awful challenges of this disease with strength, dignity and spirit through the very end,” he wrote.

After this loss, his old friends saw a change. “That was around the time when he became more outspoken,” Mr. Waldman said. “They were close, and they had a good relationship. He was heartbroken.”

By the following year, the clarity Mr. Azzarello had shown in writing of his grief was gone, and a troubled image emerged.

In March 2023, he listed his profession on LinkedIn as “Research Investigator,” self-employed. In June of that year, he tagged Ms. Brennan and several others to make sure they had seen something he had written. She described it as a “manifesto” and called him immediately and tried to intervene. Eventually she wrote to one of his family members to make sure that they were aware that he was in crisis, she said.

About five months later, in early August 2023, he posted on Facebook about visiting a mental health treatment facility: “Three days in the psych ward, and all I got were my new favorite socks.”

Days later, in picturesque St. Augustine, he went for dinner at the Casa Monica Hotel on Cordova Street. Afterward, Mr. Azzarello walked into the lobby, approached an autograph left by former President Bill Clinton, who had signed the wall several years earlier, and threw a glass of wine at it, the police said. He admitted what he had done to officers, the police said. The episode was most likely written off as one man’s bad night.

Two days later, he was back, standing outside the hotel in just his underwear, ranting and cursing into a bullhorn, the police said. And just three days after that, he vandalized a sign outside a nearby United Way office before climbing into the bed of a stranger’s truck and rifling its contents, the police said.

All these events played out within walking distance of the apartment where even his most far-afield views had only recently been delivered politely.

In the months that followed, Mr. Azzarello promoted his disjointed preoccupations in a document he posted on Facebook. The pages attacked fascism and the general complacency of the public. They espoused general anti-government sentiment but did not seem directed at a discernible political party.

“Like frogs in water coming to a boil, the public didn’t notice the rotten truth behind the illusion of freedom,” the writings state. The man who had written fondly of his mother just a year earlier — “gracious and warm, silly and catty, compassionate and supportive” — and their time together seemed to have disappeared.

His greatest vexation appeared to be cryptocurrency, which he cast as a threat to humanity.

It was unclear when he arrived in New York, taking a room at the Soho 54 Hotel on Watts Street in Lower Manhattan and making his way to the running sideshow outside the downtown criminal courthouse.

The area he chose, Collect Pond Park, has been an on-and-off stage for supporters and opponents of Mr. Trump for months. Mr. Azzarello was there by Thursday, holding a sign and speaking in ways that, perhaps bizarre elsewhere, fit in with the disparate voices of the park.

On Friday, the crowd in the park had thinned. At about 1:35 p.m., people began to scream. A blur followed: a man on fire, bright flames licking his clothing and hair; officers scrambling over barricades; a departing ambulance.

His oldest friends were left struggling to make sense of this act.

“He was kind and a gentle soul,” said Carol Waldman, the mother of his childhood friend. “A real wonderful, terrific young guy. Who had his whole life ahead of him.”
