Edinburgh bike tours.
Enchanting Edinburgh - Scotland’s stunning capital - is a city of contrasts. Its medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town both promise sublime sightseeing opportunities, from the magnificent Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Castle towering over the city, to the resplendent Royal Mile running down its center.
A bike tour in Edinburgh is a brilliant way to introduce yourself to this enchanting city and immerse yourself in the lively, traditional, and welcoming Scottish culture.
The city’s Old Town and New Town are together worthily recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the city is famous for its incredible culture - Edinburgh is renowned for hosting the Edinburgh Fringe (the world’s largest international arts festival) and is home to the Scottish National Gallery and National Museum of Scotland.
Owing to its incredible history and sublime architecture, as well as its peaceful surroundings, Edinburgh is the second-most visited tourist destination in the UK.
A bicycle tour of elegant Edinburgh is a surefire way to fall in love with Scotland, whether you’re riding the charming cobbles of the Royal Mile, ascending the dormant volcano at Arthur’s Seat, or using the city as the stunning starting point for a cycling tour into the phenomenal Scottish Highlands.

City Centre, Holyrood Park, Portobello Guided Tour
11 miles / 18 km | 3 hours total with stops | Easy/Moderate
About this tour
This guided cycle ride (2.5 to 3 hours, 18 km) lets you sample the rich diversity which Edinburgh has to offer and which is best experienced on a bike: picturesque cycle paths, a few of the iconic sites in the heart of the city, verdant Holyrood Park and a coastal promenade.
We start by heading west from our office along a designated cycle path and then emerge in the New Town area, just ½ mile from the city centre. After a short, steep climb through residential streets in this UNESCO World Heritage Site we cross Princes Street (from where you can see Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street Gardens) and head down the lower section of The Royal Mile, experiencing some of the history of the Old Town, towards Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament.
The scenery then changes as we enter Holyrood Park and pass Arthur’s Seat on the way to another quiet cycle path, which follows the route of a disused railway line back down towards the coastline. We finish with a spin along Portobello Promenade and then back to Leith.
There’s simply no better way to see the dramatic and contrasting cityscape of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

What People Say about this tour
Brilliant few hours.

COVID-19 responsible and we couldn’t have asked for a better travel bike tour experience. Such a fab way to see the city and more! Thank you
Coast and Castles
When we last visited and took the city centre tour the coast and bridges tour was recommended. As expected, tours aren’t back to full operation so we contacted Kathy to see whether there was a possibility of running this and she kindly arranged our own tour. This is a beautiful ride along the coastline of…

Award winning Circular cycle tour of Edinburgh
We are Visit Scotland's Best Outdoor Experience 2022/23. We have no need to use vehicles so you will ride for the entire duration of the tour. We start right in the heart of Craigmillar Castle ground which is 1.2 miles from the city centre.
Energy rating: Moderate. Suitable for people who can ride for approx 4 hours with a stop in between and for families with children of 12+
Distance: 20 miles (4-5 hours)
Terrain: Some short distances on roads with traffic lights. Traffic free cycle paths which are all paved. Gravel paths. We will be using a cycle ramp purpose built for bikes down a set of steps.
We will complete a full circle around Edinburgh city and I will show you the beautiful parts of Edinburgh most visitors do not get the chance to see including Union Canal, Saughton Gardens, Dean Village, Port of Leith and Portobello Beach. You will be amongst Canals, aqueducts, railways, gardens, beaches, mountains and tunnels. This tour is 20 miles and we will stop for refreshments on the way. The Highlights of Edinburgh Bike Tour starts by cycling down the Royal Mile (the city’s most historic street). You will pass the new Scottish Parliament Building & Palace of Holyroodhouse , the Royal Family’s Edinburgh residence , where you will enter Holyrood Park. You will ride along cycle paths & quiet roads until you ascend Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano which offers the most panoramic views of the spectacular coastal setting. On a clear day, even the mountains of the Scottish Highlands can be seen.
Having taken in the stunning views you will begin the long descent as this quiet road winds its way along the craggy contours into the sleepy Duddingston Village . Passing the ancient 12th Century church, you will enter a remarkable ‘secret garden’ known as Dr Neil’s Garden on the shores of Duddingston Loch, now a bird & wildlife sanctuary. The nearby pub, Scotland’s oldest inn, the Sheep’s Heid, is a welcome stop for a refreshing drink with its pleasant garden terrace. Afterwards, you will return to the city along the Innocent Cycle Path a former railway line now a popular ‘rails to trails’ cycleway which brings you back to the starting place of the tour. Of course, there will be enough time to take pictures during the tour and you can ask your guide questions at any time. Top 10 Bike Rides and Cycling Routes around Edinburgh
Cycling around edinburgh.
Dangling its toes in the Firth of Forth and occupying an absolutely beautiful patch of Lothian, cycling in Edinburgh never fails to impress. Scotland’s capital is a wonderfully bike-friendly city and riding gives you the perfect opportunity to discover everything that’s magical about this ancient area. From pedaling around Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Castle to heading up into the majestic Pentland Hills or speeding along the shoreline, exploring on two-wheels is endless fun.
You’ll find more than enough cycle routes in Edinburgh, with disused railway lines, cycle paths and designated trails criss-crossing the whole region. Fancy a flat bike ride? Head north to Leith and idle along the shore of the Firth for as long as you like in either direction. In the mood for climbs and glorious views? Strenuous cycle trails will lead you out of the capital and up into the Pentland Hills.

Scotland’s capital grew out of numerous strongholds and has developed over thousands of years into the thriving city it is today. Two-wheeled adventures give you the opportunity to really get to know the area, as cycle routes throughout Edinburgh take you to a variety of landscapes.
The Water of Leith is a river which flows from the Pentland Hills and runs all the way to the Firth of Forth, immediately to the north of the city. This river provides you with a perfect natural route to follow and you’ll see the sea, the city and the summits of Pentland.
Perhaps cycling around Edinburgh truly comes into its own up in the Pentland Hills. Lying a little to the south, climbs here reward you with unrivalled panoramas of the capital and the Firth. While the ascents are tough on the legs, you’ll be on traffic-free trails, allowing easy resting points.
Cutting across the low-lying landscape, the Union Canal is a fantastic flat route, or explore lanes between fields and meander your way around the city outskirts. With castles, woodlands and old quarries, there’s something intriguing around every corner.
Historic sites for sandwich stops
Bike rides in Edinburgh and its pretty surroundings always include historic sites. If you’re not in the immediate vicinity of a castle, you might be on a Roman Road, pedaling past an old mill or pausing for water on the site of a hill fort.
The fascinating history of the area gives you brilliant objectives on rides and provides impressive lunch spots. Within the city itself, two-wheel your way through ancient history from Arthur’s Seat to Edinburgh Castle and the cathedral.
Craigmillar Castle to the south east and Lauriston Castle in the north west are both beautiful objectives for rides through Edinburgh’s past. Rosslyn Chapel featured in the Da Vinci Code film and can be found on the banks of the River North Esk. You’ll find woodlands, designated cycle paths and plenty more historic sites in this area, just east of the Pentland Hills and within easy reach of Edinburgh.
