The layout of these buttons on steering wheel depends on how your BMW is equipped.

Standard Models

For models with standard equipment, when the limit function “LIM” is set, the car will not accelerate past the set speed, unless there’s extensive throttle input initiated by the driver.

To turn the dynamic cruise control on or off, press the button next to with speedometer icon it. To set your current speed press the SET button. The rocker switch allows you to increase or decrease the set speed by 1 and 5 mile per hour increments.

If equipped with Speed Limit Assist , when activated the system will recognize when the speed limit has changed and will propose the new set speed. To accept, press the SET button.

You can temporarily deactivate the cruise control by pressing the CANCEL button or by applying the brakes. To return to cruising at your set speed, press the RESUME or RES button. To turn off the system, press the dynamic cruise control button again.

Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-go

Models equipped with active cruise control with stop-and-go will have different buttons for these additional features. Here, cruise control button activates the system, once set active cruise control allows the driver to set a desired following distance from the vehicle traveling in front, and adjust the vehicle speed to maintain the preset following distance, and will even bring the vehicle to a stop.

Use the gap buttons (+ -) to increase or decrease the follow distance. To turn off the system, press the cruise control button again (button with speedometer icon).

Active Driving Assistance Pro

In models with active driving assistant Pro, the Assist button is used to turn the steering and traffic jam assistant feature on and off.

In addition to all the previously mentioned features, it has a MODE button for selecting between driver assistance profiles. By pressing the mode button the vehicle will cycle between either distance control or assisted driving, which includes steering control.

There is also an LED above both the left and right control pads on the steering wheel, the two LEDs provide additional visual indicators. When green the assistance system is active. If it turns yellow, interruption of the assistance system is pending. And when it shows red, the assistance system has been deactivated and you should take over driving.

Extended Traffic Jam Assistant

In models with the Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, the traffic jam assistant is further enhanced when certain conditions are met. When prompted to activate, press the MODE button. The system uses a camera to ensure the driver is looking at the road and paying attention to their surroundings allowing for an even more comfortable drive by removing the requirement to hold the steering wheel. To turn off the driving assistant, just press the assist button.

Hi, My cruise is not functioning on my new used manual transmission car. I'm just wondering if there is a most likely place to start troubleshooting the issue. I heard that it may be a switch failure on the clutch pedal, any advice/insight? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Regards, Ross

I would see if the cruise control unit is even there. Maybe someone took it out.

E36 cruise no wormy

That is a good point, I will check that......where should I look? Thanks, Ross

check to see that your CC cables are not loose. Mine were...but in your case maybe your CC module is busted.

You probably figured it out by now. I just fixed my cruise control by replacing the clutch switch. Details and pics here: http://cparente.wordpress.com/2012/0...-on-an-e36-m3/

was having cruise disengagement. then later unable to even set cruise. so, tightened cruise cable at throttle plate. both accelerater and cruise cables go to the mount near the throttle body.

Before replacing the clutch switch, make sure the switch plunger isn't just pressed in too far. Pull it out all the way - it ratchets out - and then it will self adjust. That fixed mine.

Don't bother trying to figure it out. Just replace. It's the reason 99.9% of the time the cruise control doesn't work. Look at my join date. If you have over 75k miles. They do konk out. Did so on my 96 M3 AND my 95 M3.

Did you ever have a no-start issue related to heat involving the clutch switch? If my car gets REALLY HOT, like we're talking sitting in the sun in 100 degree heat hot, sometimes it will do absolutely nothing when I turn the key. A few tries of clutch stomping and key turning later it always starts right up.

Eric - Hmmm... high heat and hard start? I know high heat causes resistance with electricals. We get 100+ degree days out here too but never had starting problems. The cruise switch is pretty dumb, just on/off and it's not. That switch is NOT the same switch that starts the car. You can spot the CC switch as it's a small 1x1 inch little black switch. The clutch one... man it's been a while I think looks like a plunger... I have wired all my E36 cars to bypass the clutch switch... so I don't have to push the clutch in to start the car. It's a BIG gauge wire. Like a 4 or 6 (normal stereo wiring is 18-24). You can try that... like a 30 min job.

Just changed the switch in my 95. (Sorry, I know this thread was posted like over a year ago, but whatever...) I noticed the switch I took off was ratcheted in too far. So technically, I could've probably fixed it that way by just pulling the plunger out to the proper length. Buuut I went ahead and just put the new one in anyway. The other one wasn't making contact with the pedal itself, thus rendering it useless. I tried out the CC in the neighborhood in 3rd and 4th gear but it wasn't engaging... And then I also tried it out in town at 50 mph in 5th gear. None of which engaged... Is there a certain speed you have to be going for it to work? Or is this just not working at all still...?

A failing brake switch can also cause the CC to not function but have you checked all the fuses? With any sort of electrical issue its best to start simple and check fuses then move on from there. In the 13 years I've been working on and around BMW's as a job its amazing how many customers don't start by a simple check of the fuse box when something electrical stops working.

I've also changed that switch as well. I was having tail/brake light issues about 8-10 months ago so I changed it then. But yes, I will check the fuses. And you're right, you can lump me in with always forgetting to check that simple stuff first. Haha
cc engages at 25mph+
Originally Posted by scooper cc engages at 25mph+ Okay thanks. Yeah it's definitely not working then. I just tried it again on my way to dinner. I also checked the fuse and as far as I can tell, it's perfectly fine. :/ Any other things to check?
