What Food Is Boston Most Famous For?

First thing’s first, it’s a good idea to know what food Boston is most famous for before you decide which tour is best for you. And because it’s a city, you could argue that pretty much all cuisine shines here, but there are definitely two types of food that are going to stand out in Boston:

🍝 Italian and 🦞 Seafood !

Between the 1850s and early 1900s, a large population of Italians immigrated to Boston via the Port of Boston, and many of them settled in the North End. Now, the North End is famous for charming and historic streets, and … you guessed it – Italian food! If you love Italian cuisine, this is where you should go (or take your tour!).

And of course, seafood is another star of the Boston food scene simply because of its location on the coast. Menus all across the city will feature fresh seafood from coastal towns like Wellfleet, Chatham, Ipswich, Nantucket and more . In particular, if you see Wellfleet or Chatham oysters, Nantucket scallops or Maine lobster on the menu, you’ll definitely want to consider ordering those!

Tips For Your Boston Food Tour!

  • Wear comfy shoes! Sneakers will be ideal. Boston is a pretty casual city anyway, and most tours on this list head over to the North End, where there are historic (meaning, uneven!) cobblestone and brick sidewalks. Sturdy and comfy shoes are a must.
  • Come hungry! I know it seems this goes without saying, but most food tours will equal an entire meal. Be sure to read the description to find out how much food you’ll be eating, and come hungry enough for it!
  • Bring a reusable water bottle if your tour doesn’t provide drinks or bottled water. Some do, but it’s best to check and come prepared.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions on your tour! The guides are local experts, and they love sharing their knowledge on the food scene in Boston. Don’t hesitate to raise your hand and get all your questions answered. I also highly suggest asking where to eat during the rest of your trip because they’ll have awesome off-the-beaten-path recommendations!

“Every detail was well thought out and executed.”

Such an awesome way to see a unique part of the city. We spent the afternoon doing the South End tour with group of extended family – my parents, my husband, and sister. There was truly something for everyone…fun facts about the neighborhoods for the history buffs and delicious eats along the way for everyone. My parents, who have lived outside of Boston for 40+ years, loved hearing new and interesting stories about this neighborhood. Every detail was well thought out and executed. I highly recommend – you will learn new things and taste new things, even if you have spent your whole life nearby. We will definitely be back to try Bites of Boston tours in other neighborhoods.

– Heidi M.

“A delicious tour and educational to boot!”

Five of us went on the tour even though we have lived in Boston all our lives. We wanted to get a taste of the foodie places in the South End and were not disappointed. Every place we visited was terrific. We also learned some little known facts about the South End that we never knew before. A very enjoyable day!

– Nanagini | Boston, MA

“Fabulous South End food tour with Laurel”

Our group of six women from all different parts of the country had a perfect tour of the most excellent foodie places in the South End! Laurel was so well-informed and kind and generous with her time. She was patient and answered all of our questions. We loved the selection of places: Elephant Walk, Formaggio, Stephi’s on Tremont and The Buttery. The whole experience was Perfection: so stimulating to all five senses to say the least! A huge shout out to our guide, Laurel. Highly recommend her and the tour to everyone.

– Lynn E

“Sweet & Savory tour was wonderful”

We took the Sweet & Savory Tour Yesterday (10/1/2017). We visited 6 places and sampled dishes at each one. The food was delicious and the pace of the tour interspersed with local landmarks and history lessons was perfect. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable.

– Gryphon | St. Thomas

“Eat like a local”

We always find food tours to be a great way to explore a city and this was no exception. What do you get? History, orientation, restaurant recommendations, small groups led by your own tour guide, and yes, great food. We loved exploring South Boston, a section of the city unfamiliar to us, enjoyed each and every stop and thoroughly enjoyed the energy, enthusiasm and knowledge of Pasquale, our guide. Try this. It does not disappoint.

Any reason is a good reason to gather friends who share the love of chocolate!

Over the past decade, we have continually been impressed by Victoria’s enthusiasm and skills with running the Cocoa Beantown Tours. Our guests always comment on the educational and sensory delight of her tours!!!
Overall, we had a lovely experience and enjoyed being on the tour. All the stops were picked with care and great sense of taste and it was a pleasure to discover new and exciting places in Boston with the guide who was very friendly and welcoming. We really enjoyed the chocolate treats which in themselves were delicious. Thank you for a nice tour.
Few people consistently exhibit the passion, detail, and professionalism of their work like Victoria. I’ve had the pleasure of not only seeing her in action but also working alongside her at events and seminars. In both capacities, I eagerly await the next opportunity! Her knowledge of chocolate never ceases to amaze, and her ability to convey that knowledge to novice and professional alike is equally impressive.
This is a great class. The best part about it is Victoria’s enthusiasm about chocolate and the process of how it’s made. This class worked really well…Victoria took time to explain how to do a chocolate tasting, and it was fun to try to match that at home with the samples.
Victoria of Cocoa Beantown was an excellent partner and collaborator. We worked together to create new educational programming around pairing specialty coffee and chocolate. Not only is she a chocolate expert, she is passionate and enthusiastic about what she does. She also makes learning engaging and approachable.
Many thanks to Cocoa Beantown Tours and Events for a great team-building day! We had a blast learning the history of various chocolatiers in and around Boston, and sampling some amazing treats. Our bellies are full and our hearts are happy! Best team building ever!!
Victoria’s warm and outgoing personality, high level of professionalism, and of course her vast knowledge of all things Boston and chocolate make her the ultimate chocolate guide around the city. We’ve seen time and time again loads of happy guests on her tours chatting with Victoria, thanking her for a great experience, and making plans for future tours.
Victoria’s chocolate classes are very informative, fun, and delicious! I have been an avid fan of chocolate for many decades and never knew that there was so much more to learn. It also can be healthy….who knew?! So come have fun with Victoria. I know I am a fan.
One of the hallmarks of Knowledge Exchange has always been bringing to the forefront the most innovative and unique experiences for the corporate event spectrum. Our industry is currently in a place where planners are tired of the old hotel ballroom routine.  They crave creativity, ingenuity and wow factor. This is why I’ve long admired the talents of Victoria from Cocoa Beantown Tours & Events. She has taken something as “vanilla” as chocolate, an item consumed by millions of people on a daily basis, and through her extensive knowledge and the sheer power of innovation, has created spectacular programs that not only tantalize the tastebuds, but indulge the participant in a full sensory exploration of the decadence of the cocoa bean.  I greatly look forward to not only having the opportunity to be enchanted by her chocolate creativity next time I’m in Boston, but to seeing the ingenious new ways she will continue to change our industry.
Victoria’s knowledge of chocolate and its history is exceptional, and her enthusiasm for the subject matter is undeniable and infectious. Whether it’s a walking tour for any age group highlighting the best treats in a particular neighborhood or a historical presentation and tasting in a more formalized setting, if you have even a hint of a sweet tooth, Victoria is a good woman to know!
Our tour guide Victoria made our tour fun and educational. She had a way of making everyone on the tour feel like life long friends instead a a bunch of strangers tasting chocolate. She is incredible. She made the tour wonderful, and as a result, our anniversary weekend. We will definitely be doing this again on our next trip to Boston.
I thoroughly enjoyed the taste testing. It was not only fun but also informative. I would love to understand how to take these chocolates and incorporate them into drinks or baking or other cooking dishes!
Victoria’s passion and impressive knowledge of chocolate shows with these tours. She keeps them fun, lighthearted and brings the euphoria throughout the tour. It’s always been a pleasure sharing our own passions in ice cream & social justice with each tour.
Who wouldn’t want to be tasting chocolate, and getting a cocoa-education in the process? This is a fantastic event, even over Zoom or Webex, to gain a higher appreciation for chocolate – origins, history, innovation – and of course, savor the different tastes along the way. I’ve joined multiple (ahem, 9) chocolate walking tours with Cocoa Beantown, and at least 2 corporate tasting events. Hands down – one of the best ways to bring a team together!
I don’t usually do this but I just had to send some feedback regarding our tour! I planned this as surprise for my mom who is also my best friend who grew up in South Boston and spent much of her time in the South End. She is also a chocolate fanatic! What I hoped to be a nice day with my mom was truly spectacular!!!! The chocolate was so yummy but was almost just a “perk” of the tour. Victoria made today so absolutely fun and enjoyable that we will remember today always as a wonderful mother daughter day! Thank you Victoria for an absolutely fabulous day!!!!
I can recommend Victoria’s presentation on chocolate highly. She prepares an assortment of delectable chocolates to sample and savour. Then she explains where the beans come from and the pieces are made around the world. Any chocolate lover, and who is not one, will have their chocolate pleasure greatly enhanced by attending her programs.
