Tour Itinerary

Tour information, tour route map.

On our Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh we travel via Glasgow to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. We’ll make our first stop at the charming village of Luss which sits on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Sparkling lochs, tumbling waterfalls and majestic Munros takes us to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe. We’ll stop at Scotland’s most famous glen and hear about the infamous Glencoe Massacre of 1692, when the MacDonald’s were slaughtered by the Campbells.

At Glenfinnan we’ll climb up to the viewpoint for stunning views of Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel. You’ll see the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct curve through the glen as the route to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.

We’ll get off the beaten track for views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail before travelling over the bridge to the Isle of Skye.

Glencoe

Your friendly driver-guide has the flexibility to ensure you see the best of the island whatever the weather. Skye never disappoints – there is just so much to see.

We’ll have time to explore Portee and enjoy some lunch before we head to the Trotternish Peninsula. The awe-inspiring scenery never seems to stop, and we’ll get spectacular views at the Quiraing, Mealt Falls and Kilt Rock before we reach the famous landscape of the Old Man of Storr.

Fairy Glen

We cross the Skye Bridge on to the mainland and Eilean Donan Castle*. The castle sits on an island at a point where three great sea lochs meet, surrounded by majestic highland scenery. Eilean Donan was used in many films including Highlander and James Bond epic, The World is Not Enough.

The village of Fort Augustus lies at the southern end of Loch Ness and is lunch stop. You can enjoy an optional cruise on Loch Ness or take a stroll along the Caledonian Canal.

Our journey continues through the Cairngorms National Park, passing Blair Castle to Pitlochry for our final refreshment stop of the day. We return to Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh via the Queensferry crossing ending our 3-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh.

22/03/23 – Helen and Whitney-May

This was just the most wonderful experience and I would like to commend you and Jerry (our tour guide) on what will likely be the absolute highlight of our trip to the UK (we still have a little while here but you’re going to be hard to beat!) A million thank you’s for this experience. It was all round amazing, from every annoying enquiry I sent last minute to the office, through to the on-the-ground offering. The carefully researched commentary, lovely bus, caring on time guest service levels provided by Jerry and well, the scenery -though not your making 🙂 –  was next level heavenly. I cannot recommend your tour more highly! Warm regards.

17/03/23 – Taylor

We LOVED our tour with Discover Scotland! Our guide Michael was amazing we could not have ask for anyone better. We enjoyed our whole trip from the bus rides hearing stories, history, songs and much more about Scotland, to our quick picture stops, all our longer spots where we had time to explore, and our free time in Kyleakin.  We felt like our interests were heard by our guide and we were given options and suggestions to do things we would enjoy.  The only thing we wished we could change was staying longer. We are very thankful for our guide and discover scotland for everything. Thanks for everything

02 /11/ 22 – Sergio

I had a wonderful time with Discover Scotland Tours. We had an amazing tour guide also our driver named Jerry! The tour had plenty of photographic stops from day 1. Driving through the Highlands into the Isle of Skye and to Loch ness the group and I could feel the magic Scottish atmosphere. Thank you Jerry for taking care of every single one of us and thank you Discover Scotland Tours for this fantastic experience.

10/10/22 – Vanessa

We had an amazing time! John our guide was perfect! I can’t say enough good things about him! He obviously loves his job and the island.  I appreciated how you kept in touch with me leading up to the tour and how responsive and clearly  you answered my questions. I will most definitely recommend John Black and your company to everyone willing to hear me go on about what an amazing experience we had. Thank you for everything and with some luck we will be making more plans with your company.

19/08/22 – Kylie + Corbin

Our 3-day Isle of Skye tour with Scott was unforgettable! Despite road closures to start the trip, Scott maintained positivity that radiated throughout the group. Each day brought adventure and memories that we will always cherish. It’s easy to see that Scott loves people and Scotland as he went out of his way to make sure everyone got to see and do what they set out to. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and guide!

02/08/22 – Angelina

My friends and I recently went on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, and Loch Ness 3-day tour from Edinburgh, and it was the highlight of our vacation! Our tour guide, John Black, was quite the character. Throughout the whole trip, he was super cheery and always cracking jokes. His personal anecdotes, vast knowledge, and captivating story-telling provided us with a unique glimpse into the Scottish people, culture, and history. John was extremely accommodating for everyone on the tour, making frequent stops for bathroom breaks and food throughout the day. The bus itself was very comfortable, with AC and plenty of space for everyone, and had great views no matter where one sat. Our accommodation was booked through Discover Scotland as well, at Winklebeech bnb in Kyleakin. It had a quaint and homey vibe, and the owner was super welcoming. She was also extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and even offered us some bug spray after seeing all of our midge bites! The rooms were tidy and comfortable, with all the necessities one may need. We managed to hit all the destinations on the tour, and it ran very smoothly with no delays. We were especially in awe with the Isle of Skye- It’s a must-see for everyone who visits Scotland! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Discover Scotland Tours and would visit again in a heartbeat!

28 /07/22 – Roxanne

We had a wonderful time and it was through this tour that Scotland came alive for us. Our Tour Leader made a point of getting to know each of us. In between the gorgeous countryside and  the historical background Michael provided, he played songs told amusing stories and made it us feel like we were all part of one family. There were lots of stops for the bathroom and food as well. He was patient answering all of our questions and was respectful of the country’s we came from. We loved this tour and will be talking about it for quite some time. Also good value for our money.

11/07/22 – Darryl

We were very happy with our three day tour. This being our first, and probably only trip to Scotland, we appreciated the variety of things we saw and the general information about your country.

We were especially impressed with our tour guide, John Sheedy. In addition to being an all-around nice guy, he was very attentive to everyone’s needs and well prepared with interesting stories. Having grown up on the isle of Skye was a bonus. John conveyed his genuine love and pride of Scotland and made our trip fun and comfortable.

01/07/22 – Jessica

Mark and I had THE BEST weekend. It’s my first time in Scotland, and although it was a whirlwind, I’m excited to get back and spend more time in certain places. Accommodation was great, Garry was FANTASTIC. So warm and bubbly and knowledgeable and fun.  We’re both quite introverted and I was overwhelmed and missing my children and we never once felt pressured or intruded on, but also Garry made us both feel so seen and included, I was so grateful for how he handled us. Lots of stops, would be good to have a bit more time in some places, but I also really liked ticking lots of things off my list. It was also really relaxing, I slept on the bus all the time – as a parent it was just so lovely to not have to worry about ANYTHING.  Garry added a few fun things in that I wasn’t expecting which was so great! Lots of Harry Potter stops! A DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT! I just loved every minute.  I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you add some northern Scotland tours! Let me know if you do.

10/06/22 – Gráinne

My tour was the Isle of Skye, the Highlands & Loch Ness 3 day tour with Gary. The itinerary was great. Loved all the stops. Loads of time at each stop , didn’t feel rushed. Our tour guide, Gary, was fantastic. He had loads of fun facts and quips and kept us all motivated even though the weather was against us. Will definitely recommend Gary and the tour to anyone!

What about my accommodation?

Your tour excludes accommodation. During the tour booking process you will be asked if you are booking your own accommodation or whether you wish us to reserve this on your behalf?

Please contact us to let us know the name of the accommodation you have reserved.

Edinburgh to Isle of Skye: Car, Train, & Bus Tour

Portree Colorful Houses in front of water on the Isle of Skye

This article has links to products and services we love, which we may make commission from.

Are you planning a trip to The Misty Isle in search of dramatic landscapes, rural culture, folklore, and fairies? This guide explains exactly how to travel from Edinburgh to Skye by car for road-tripping, by train for comfort, by bus for affordability, and by day tour accompanied by expert guide. We’ve personally done the latter!

Note: While Skye is an island located in the Inner Hebrides in Scotland, you don’t actually have to arrive by water as there is a bridge. However, we will include ferry options below too.

You may also like our free  7-day Scotland itinerary .

Edinburgh to Skye by Car

The direct route from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye’s capital, Portree takes around 5.5 hours (236 miles) without stops.

This itinerary follows the A90 over the Queensferry Crossing (Forth Bridges – image below), which connects South Queensferry with the Kingdom of Fife, and onto the M90 and A9 through Perthshire.

Next, the rural roads, which are referred to as “A” roads of the A86 and A87, lead the way to the Kyle of Lochalsh and over the Skye Bridge; Fàilte (welcome)!

Map of Edinburgh to Skye Direct Driving Route

This part of the journey takes around 4.5 hours (203 miles), with the winding scenic road to Portree remaining.

  • Edinburgh to Skye Driving Time:  Approx. 5.5 hours
  • Pros:  Flexibility, independence, scenic
  • Cons:  Very long, driving single “A” roads can be daunting for first-time visitors, the weather

Scenic Drive From Edinburgh to Skye

The trip to Skye is usually enjoyed at a slower pace over 2-7 days, taking in Scotland’s lively cities, rustic landscape, deep lochs, fresh food, and maybe a whisky dram or two!

There isn’t just one route, but the classic itinerary tends to include a sightseeing stop at the 100ft Kelpies in Falkirk (M90), through Stirling for its castle and the Wallace Monument, to Callander “the gateway to the Highlands” at the Trossachs National Park, joining the A82 to the majestic Glencoe and up to Fort William.

From here, there are two options.

The route either veers left to Glenfinnan, where, if you time it right, you’ll witness the Jacobite steam train, aka Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express, chug over the viaduct.

Then it is back on the road to Mallaig to catch the ferry to Armadale in Skye.

Tickets should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

Or, the route veers right to Spean Bridge and up the rural roads to the Skye Bridge.

Spean Bridge is close to St. Augustus, south of Loch Ness , so if you want to go Nessie hunting, you could add a side trip to Loch Ness and Inverness before or after visiting Skye; this is very common.

We cover this route in detail during our free seven-day Scotland itinerar y .

Map of Edinburgh to Skye Scenic Route with Ferry Crossing

Another lesser-known option that connects Skye to the mainland is the seasonal Glenelg to Kylerhea ferry .

Note: Many businesses in the Highlands and remote areas of the country shut down for winter, so plan accordingly by booking accommodation in advance, purchasing ferry tickets, packing meals/snacks, and topping up fuel/electricity when you can.

Glencoe from car window on Highlands day tour

Edinburgh to Skye by Train

If driving in Scotland and “on the left” sounds tricky, there is a train that departs Edinburgh Waverley and arrives in Mallaig about 6.5 hours later.

The journey requires one change: check the ScotRail app for the destination legs before booking so that you know where to depart and change over.

This train journey is special as it goes through some of the West Highland Way hike locations, such as Bridge of Orchy and Rannoch, and it goes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, just like the Harry Potter train!

From Mallaig Station, you can walk to the ferry port and sail to Armadale Pier in Skye (30 minutes) and then ride the very scarcely operated bus to Portree (1.5 to 3 hours).

Use this journey planner to help marry up all of the stages of the journey.

If choosing this option, consider that you won’t see much of Skye’s highlights unless you have a tour booked like this one .

An alternative train route is Edinburgh to Kyle of Lochalsh.

It has three legs to the journey, which requires two separate changeovers, then a bus to Portree, which is a little more frequent than the bus from Armadale Pier to Portree.

The train takes anywhere between 6 hours 40 minutes and 7 hours 40 minutes, and the bus is just over one hour.

See Citylink for bus times.

It is not impossible to visit Skye by public transport; it is just a little challenging and has many moving parts!

  • Edinburgh to Skye Train Time 1:  Approx. 6.5 hours, then onward ferry and bus approx. 2-3 hours
  • Edinburgh to Skye Train Time 2:  6.5-8 hours, then bus approx. 1 hour
  • Pros:  No driving, scenic, seat reservations, electronic charging points, on-board restrooms, cafe
  • Cons:  Room for error, very limited bus service, no flexibility/independence to travel on Skye

Portree Colorful Houses in front of water on the Isle of Skye

Edinburgh to Skye by Bus

The Edinburgh to Inverness and then Inverness to Portree bus takes around 7.5 hours with one changeover; however, this option is not very frequent.

If traveling from Glasgow is possible, there is a direct bus to Portree, which takes around 7 hours.

  • Edinburgh to Portree Bus Time:  Approx. 7.5 hours with changeover
  • Pros:  No driving, scenic, on-board restrooms, affordable
  • Cons:  Room for error, very limited bus service, no flexibility/independence to travel on Skye, comfort restricted

Tours From Edinburgh to Isle of Skye

If all of the above options sound like a headache, consider letting someone else take control of the wheel on a multi-day Isle of Skye trip from Edinburgh.

This 3-day Isle of Skye tour includes a day traveling via Kelpies, Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond, Trossachs National Park, Glencoe, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Loch Ness, and Inverness, where customers have to reserve accommodation for two nights.

On day two, the tour visits attractions on Skye such as the Cuillin Mountains, Trotternish Peninsula, Portree, the Old Man Storr, Kilt Rock, and the Quiraing.

The final day features Culloden Battlefield, Cairngorm National Park, and whisky tasting in Dunkeld (Perthshire), before heading back to Edinburgh.

Alternatively, this 3-day Skye tour arranges accommodation for you, visits most of the tourist sightseeing spots above, and transports customers by Mercedes bus for comfort.

  • Edinburgh to Skye By Tour:  3 days
  • Pros:  Guided tour with driver, lots of sightseeing opportunities
  • Cons:  Lack of flexibility in itinerary, long days, groups of people

How to get from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye (all options)

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: February 4, 2024

Discover the best ways to get from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye including public transport, driving and tour options.

The Isle of Skye is both the northernmost and largest of all the major islands in the Inner Hebrides and a must-visit destination on any Scotland tour.

Blessed with a rugged, hilly landscape, a smattering of quaint fishing villages and the ruins of many a medieval castle, a Skye tour road trip is the gift that keeps on giving.

With outstanding natural formations like Kilt Rock, the old man of Storr, Trotternish Peninsula, the fairy glen and the mystical fairy pools, you’ll be a wee bit blown away by all the outstanding natural beauty of the island.

It’s a world away from the big mainland cities of Edinburgh , Glasgow and Aberdeen, and with towns like Portree – with its quaint harbourside boutiques, cafes and bars – as well as Dunvegan, Uig and Broadford, you’ll get a fascinating insight into the local way of life.

When it comes to planning your Scotland itinerary, you won’t need to go to the lengths that Bonnie Prince Charlie did to get there!

Instead, we’ll outline full details and travel tips on how to get there and what to do when you arrive on the Isle of Skye. So you can really make the most of your day trips, three-day tours or longer trip there.

Prefer a private driver-guided tour to take you to Skye and beyond? We recommend this 3 day Skye tour with award-winning Edinburgh Black Cab Tours which will take you to Eileen Donan Castle, The Old Man of Storr, The Quiraing, Fairy Pools, Sligachan Old Bridge, The Fairy Glen, Neist Point Lighthouse, Kilt Rock, Portree, Talisker Distillery, and Dunvegan Castle.

When to visit the Isle of Skye

What transportation methods do you prefer, what do you want to see along the route, how long do you want to spend on skye, by train + ferry (mallaig to armadale), by train + tour or public transport (kyle of lochalsh + skye bridge option), answers to frequently asked questions about travelling to skye from edinburgh, how will you visit the isle of skye from edinburgh, considerations when choosing the best way to get from edinburgh to isle of skye.

If you want to visit the Isle of Skye or any part of Northern Scotland on a multi-day tour for that matter, there are plenty of things you need to consider.

Firstly, you’ll need to decide when you will visit the island. Whilst the isle of Skye is accessible all year round, many of its main attractions like the fairy pools, fairy glen and the Old Man of Torr might not be so easy to get to in the winter if affected by snow or heavy rain. Roads, especially some back roads, might be a bit more difficult to drive as well.

Therefore it’s probably best to time your trip between the months of May to September. Although for the best weather July and August are undoubtedly the best times to go.

However, this is peak season and coincides with the school holidays. So prices for accommodation on Skye , as well as ticket prices for day trips, or a guided tour, are likely to be much more expensive, not to mention higher in demand.

Scenic Isle of Skye.

Once you have decided when you will go to the Isle of Skye, the next thing to work out is how you will get there.

Will you drive there all the way from Edinburgh? Or would you prefer to take a combination of train or ferry and bus via another destination like Inverness or Fort William ?

If you are intending to drive to Skye, will you be hiring a car?

Are there other landmarks in Scotland would you like to see en route from Edinburgh?

This is an important factor because if you want to stop off at Loch Lomond, visit Urquhart Castle or Eilean Donan castle, head to Fort Augustus or the Caledonian Canal, or even go past Loch Ness, this will determine how long your journey takes (you will need to factor in at least an hour at some of them) and what driving route you will have to follow.

Woman standing in front of a sign which. read Loch Ness

Lastly, you will also have to consider how many nights you want to stay on Skye and whether you will be doing a guided tour or day trips whilst you are there. This will determine the overall length of your tour journey to the island.

Getting to the Island of Skye from Edinburgh – the options

During your time in Scotland, if you want to head to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh, driving is by far the easiest way to do that.

The beauty of a trip like this is that you don’t need the services of a tour guide. Instead, if you do your research you can create a highly personalised itinerary based on the places that interest you the most.

For instance, if you want to see fantastic scenery, a drive through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, as well as Glen Coe, is a must. You can do this from Edinburgh by taking the A82.

Harry Potter fan s might also choose this route for the chance to see the Hogwarts Express Jacobite steam train , that runs between Fort William and Mallaig in the series of Harry Potter films.

Alternatively, if you wanted to head to visit Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, you could do so by travelling along the A9. For both routes, you will need to join the A87 to the Isle of Skye.

Although it can be a bit daunting travelling on foreign roads if you are an international driver don’t worry, most of these routes will take you along motorways or dual carriageway, which makes driving a breeze – especially if you have a good GPS or satellite navigation system.

Whichever route you decide to take on your journey from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye, set aside at least one full day for doing this, as you will want to stop off several times to take in the wonderful scenery in this part of Scotland.

A couple sitting on the Jacobite train.

For those who want to take the ferry to the Isle of Skye, your best option is to take the train from Edinburgh (Waverley) to Mallaig in the Highlands of Scotland, and then get a ferry from there to Armadale.

Located on the west coast, it typically takes between 7 to 9 hours to complete this journey. But as the first train leaves Edinburgh at 7.15 am, and the last ferry departs Armadale at 6.10 pm it is doable in a day.

However, should you prefer, you could always stay overnight at Fort William before catching the ferry ride the next day – which takes between 45 minutes and one hour.

The ferry ride is a wonderful experience, and well worth doing on account of the fantastic scenery you will be able to take in. If you can strike up a conversation on the way with a friendly local all the better, as they will act as a fantastic tour guide.

Please note, that public transport is limited at Armadale, so it is advisable to pre-book a taxi for when you get there. There are buses that run but it can be tricky to get exact information – often these seem to run in the summer months and coincide with the ferry services.

Mallaig to Armadale ferry.

An alternate way to get to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh is to take the train to Inverness. This will take the best part of 4 hours.

From there you can then take a train to the Kyle of Lochalsh which takes approximately 2 hours 40 minutes. The Kyle Railway Line is a wonderfully scenic train journey (one of our favourite train trips in the UK )

Alternatively catch a bus from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, which is about a 2-hour and 15-minute trip, before taking another bus over the Skye Bridge to Portree, or other parts of the island.

This is a good option for visitors to Scotland who do not want to hire a car. There are opportunities for day trips from Inverness too via bus or tour for those without their own vehicle.

Once on Skye, there is public transport available that will take you around the island or alternatively book a tour from your accommodation.

For bus timetables consult Citylink which operates between the Kyle of Lochalsh and destinations on Skye.

Q. Is there a train from the Isle of Skye to Edinburgh?

A. Unfortunately, a direct train does not run from a departure point of Edinburgh to Isle of Skye.

That said, you can get direct trains from Edinburgh to Inverness. From there you can then take the scenic 82-mile Kyle Line to the Kyle of Lochalsh – via Glen Carron and Plockton. Once there you will need to hire a taxi to take you over the Skye Bridge to your destination on the island, catch a bus or pick up a day tour.

Q. Can you fly from the Isle of Skye to Edinburgh?

A. Although the isle has a tiny airfield next to the small town of Ashaig, (which you might recognise from the opening scene of the 1980 film Flash Gordon ) it does not operate commercial flights. Instead, it occasionally is used to transport patients to hospitals in other parts of Scotland like Glasgow or Inverness, by the Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS Highland.

The closest airports near the Isle of Skye, from which you can fly from Edinburgh airport, are Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides . Both of which offer car hire and other transport links from either the airport or main town.

Q. Can you do a day tour to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh?

A. It is not viable to do a day tour from either Glasgow or Edinburgh to the Island of Skye unless you have a very early start! Once you leave Edinburgh, driving non-stop to the Isle of Skye will take a journey time of approximately 5 hours one way. So a return trip of 10 hours would be a very long journey, and not give you very much time to see any of the island’s main attractions. Namely Dunvegan Castle, Cuillin Mountains, Trotternish Peninsula, Kilt Rock or the Old Man of Storr, on a Skye tour.

Besides, unless you are pressed for time, you’ll be able to see the likes of Dunvegan Castle, the Grampian Mountains, Hogwarts Express, Ben Nevis, Urquhart castle, Glen Shiel, Loch Ness and the Scottish Highlands, depending on which way you drive there.

Q. How long is the train ride from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye?

A. There is no direct train from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye.

However, you can take a train from Edinburgh to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands which takes about four hours.

From there you can either hire a car and drive , or take a bus, through Northern Scotland and over the Skye Bridge to the island. This journey takes a further three to four hours. Depending on what time you arrive, you might need to stay in Inverness overnight.

Q. Is Isle of Skye worth visiting?

A. The Isle of Skye is well worth heading to when you visit Scotland and you will have an amazing time if you do go there, especially in the summer months.

Not only will you see dramatic landscapes like the Trotternish Peninsula, as well as rolling hills and stunning views, but you will also get to visit bucket list items like Dunvegan Castle, Armadale Castle, the Old Man of Storr, Elgol Beach, Kilt Rock and the old town of Portree on your Skye tour.

Scenic views in Skye Scotland.

Q. How do you get to Isle of Skye Scotland?

A. The Isle of Skye is one of the most popular destinations to go to on Scotland tours. The easiest way to get there from Edinburgh is to drive.

You can hire a car from the main city centre near Edinburgh Castle. Depending on which route you decide to take you could also see Loch Lomond, Trossachs National Park, Glen Shiel, Ben Nevis or the Scottish Highlands along the way. You can even search for the Loch Ness Monster too!

Alternatively, if you are unable to do a driving route, you can get a train to Inverness from Edinburgh and get a bus from near the car park at the station there. Unfortunately, there are no direct trains or direct buses to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh.

For every visitor to Scotland, a trip to the Isle of Skye is an absolute must. Blessed with stark, rugged landscapes and a rich history that goes back centuries, the island is as captivating as it is beautiful.

Quite simply, you’d be hard-pressed to name another place that is like it in the world. (Go on, we’ll wait!)

One thing is for sure though, whether it is Kilt Rock, the Old Man of Storr, the Trotternish Peninsula or Elgol Beach you visit, Skye is an island that will forever own a little piece of your heart.

Much like the rest of Scotland really.

Great way to see the Isle of Skye!

“We had a fantastic time on our trip! The tour covered a lot of the sites on the Isle of Skye, Glencoe on the way there, Loch Ness on the way back, etc. It was a great way to see everything without renting a car ourselves. Absolutely loved the area. Our guide, Mark, was great! He was very knowledgeable and was enthusiastic about the whole trip. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see some of the Highlands and doesn’t have a lot of time.”

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

Alternatively, please email us your questions at [email protected] or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Journey through the Highlands to the magical and misty island of Skye, famous for its wild coastal scenery and the spectacular Cuillin mountain range. The itinerary includes stops at Eilean Donan Castle, Glen Coe, Loch Ness and a full day tour around Skye, with two nights in the picturesque harbour town of Portree.

Our first stop is Dunkeld, a delightful Highland village with a history stretching back to the 8th century. Time for morning coffee and a visit to the ancient cathedral grounds, beautifully situated in mature woodlands beside the mighty River Tay.

We continue north through the Cairngorms National Park and alongside Loch Laggan before stopping for lunch.

Following the Great Glen we stop for photos of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. Travelling through spectacular mountain scenery, we stop at Loch Garry for a famous photo opportunity before continuing through stunning Glen Shiel to reach Eilean Donan Castle.

'An iconic image of Highland Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle has been used as the backdrop for countless famous movies'

Perhaps the most iconic image of Highland Scotland, the castle has been used as the backdrop for countless famous movies. It is perfectly situated on a small island, surrounded by water and fabulous scenery – a ‘must-see’ Scottish castle.

From here we drive across the Skye Bridge and under the shadow of the Cuillin Mountains to Portree, the island’s tiny capital where you will be dropped off at your accommodation and based for two nights.

Today is spent touring the Isle of Skye, a flexible itinerary at the discretion of your driver / guide * (see below).

We enjoy a half-day scenic drive along the dramatic Trotternish Ridge with its spectacular cliffs and rock formations. Stops can include Lealt Waterfall, Kilt Rock sea cliffs, the Old Man of Storr rock pinnacle and a walk at the Quiraing mountain pass. Another popular stop is the Fairy Glen, a delightful miniature Highland landscape and legendary home of the ‘wee people’!

'We spend a full day exploring the spectacular and dramatic Isle of Skye in the Wee Red Bus'

The second half of the day explores the stunning southern part of the island which includes well-known sights and some hidden gems we’ve discovered over the years.

Nestled under the Cuillin mountains is beautiful Glen Brittle. Rugged scenery surrounds us and there are several fantastic options for this section of the tour, including a short walk in the iconic mountain landscape to the famous Fairy Pools.

Another popular excursion is the drive to Neist Point lighthouse for spectacular views to the Western Isles.

The 13th century home of the famous Clan McLeod, Dunvegan Castle offers guided tours, a useful wet-weather option because of Skye’s famously changeable weather. It’s not called the ‘Misty Isle’ for nothing!

* Please note depending on weather and traffic conditions the itinerary is flexible to maximise our time on Skye.

After returning to the mainland we drive past the Five Sisters of Kintail, a high mountain ridge rising steeply from sea level. The five distinctly pointed summits are a well known landmark.

'Our next stop is a monster hunt at famous Loch Ness!'

Next stop is famous Loch Ness – Scotland’s legendary lake and home to the elusive monster! At the picturesque village of Fort Augustus you will have time to take a stroll at Loch Ness and along the canal and lock system built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800s.

Loch Ness Alamy Scaled Aspect Ratio 444x310

We continue through Fort William to perhaps the most famous of all Scotland’s glens, Glen Coe. This narrow valley is where the bloody massacre of the MacDonalds took place in 1692, one of the most notorious acts in Scotland’s long and violent history.

There’ll be time for photos of the wild scenery before continuing to Tyndrum for a break. As we approach the Lowlands we drive past the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle where you’ll hear about Scotland’s great patriots William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Their names have resounded through British history for 700 years – a fitting conclusion to a wonderful trip!

It was a wonderful experience, we had the opportunity to get to know spectacular places, exceptional, beautiful and unique landscapes accompanied by our guide, a great person, guide and connoisseur of Scottish culture, its customs, its history beyond that written in traditional books. It was worth crossing the Atlantic to get to know the Highlands. We have the experience of three wonderful days shared with a group of travelers whose kindness and friendliness made our trip an opportunity to learn, know and enjoy a beautiful part of the world. Thanks loch ness bus.

We just got back from the 3 day tour. What a well of wisdom, it took us to so wonderful places, it told us lots of fantastic stories and legends, it guided us perfectly accompanied by good music and everything in very good company! Thanks for discovering the Highlands and Skye to us! Highly recommended tour !!!!!

You see everything there is needed to see. The trips are not too long and Xabier, our excellent guide, livened it up with all kind of anecdotes and historical explanations. We really had a great time.

Three great days, visiting spectacular places thanks to Xavi. He is such a professional guide, so close and who enjoys explaining in detail the history of this beautiful country. It is a highly recommended tour.

Excellent experience !!! It is the best experience we have done in Scotland, the tour was too short even. The guide was great, he managed to make a trip of that many hours by bus felt really short. I loved how he felt the stories when he told them about the Scottish clans and kings and all those Scottish legends, making it interesting. Really, I do not usually leave opinions, but it is worth it! Very good organization of all details in the tour. 100% recommended.

Edinburgh to Isle of Skye: How to Get There + Tips

Home » Blog » Europe » United Kingdom » Edinburgh to Isle of Skye: How to Get There + Tips

Traveling from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye is doable, but requires some advanced planning with so many different transportation options.  In this guide, we’ve broken down all the best options for traveling between both can’t-miss destinations.

Isle of Skye Scotland

Historic Edinburgh enchants visitors with its charming streets, ancient castles, city parks, and lively food and pub scene. There’s much to be said about the capital city’s urban delights, but what’s a Scotland trip without a healthy dose of nature?

Isle of Skye , commonly referred to as simply Skye , is exactly the place to satisfy that outdoor itch. Located in the Inner Hebrides archipelago, the island feels a bit like stepping back in time.

Filled with rugged, verdant green terrain, dramatic crags, and jaw-dropping coastal scenery, the nature on Skye is seriously stunning. Throw in castles, colorful villages, and fascinating history, and it’s easy to see why many say this island is a do-not-miss.

Situated 200 miles apart, it does take a bit of effort to travel from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye. The island is connected to the mainland by Skye bridge, but navigating the connection can be tricky, especially when taking public transportation.

In this guide, we’ve outlined all the various transportation options so you can make reaching this slice of earthly paradise as smooth as possible.

Edinburgh to Isle of Skye by train

Fairy Glen Isle of Skye Scotland

Technically, getting from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye by train is impossible — there isn’t a rail system on the island. However, passengers can reach a convenient jumping-off point in Mallaig or Kyle of Lochalsh, then switch to another transportation method or tour .

Figuring out the best route can be tricky since there are no direct rail lines from Edinburgh, but don’t shy away from this option. The effort is worthwhile! Not only is it a comfortable method of transit, these trains are also some of the world’s most scenic!

Kyle through Inverness

First, you’ll need to catch a train from Edinburgh to Inverness, the capital and transit hub of the Scottish Highlands.

The journey takes just under five hours, and there are 13 trains a day. It isn’t necessary to reserve tickets in advance, but doing so reduces the fare to as low as £5.

There are tons of fun things to do in Inverness , so consider adding extra time before or after your visit to Isle of Skye.

From Inverness, take the rail to Kyle of Lochalsh, commonly called simply Kyle. This tiny town sits right next to the Skye bridge, so it’s convenient to catch a tour or local bus into Skye.

This rail route, known as the Kyle Line, is incredibly beautiful, topped only by the West Highland Line. The journey takes 2.75 hours, and there are four trains a day with fares starting at £15. It doesn’t usually book out completely, so buying a ticket in advance isn’t necessary.

Mallaig through Glasgow or Fort Williams

The other option is taking a train to Mallaig, a coastal port town that has ferry service to the Isle of Skye.

While a slightly more complicated route logistically, this option allows for a journey aboard either one of the world’s most scenic trains or the real-life “Harry Potter train” known as the Hogwarts Express. Talk about a trip to remember!

Either way, you’ll first need to get from Edinburgh to Glasgow . From Glasgow, board the West Highland Line, which is often noted as being one of the world’s most picturesque rail journeys!

The trip is just under 5.5 hours, and there are anywhere from two to six departures a day, depending on the season (more in the summer). It can be handy to reserve your tickets in advance, but don’t sweat it if you don’t, especially in the off-season. Fares start from £28.

Make sure to book a ticket during daylight hours and try to grab a window seat, particularly on the left side.

Hogwarts Express

Glenfinnan Viaduct Train Scotland 2

While both pricier and slower, you may also want to consider a trip aboard the Hogwarts Express, AKA the “Harry Potter train.” Known as the Jacobite Train, this steam engine is the exact train featured in the world-famous films!

The train runs along a portion of the West Highland Line, so you’ll first need to catch a train from Glasgow to Fort Williams. This leg of the route is just shy of four hours long, and costs £19.

Since the Jacobite Train departs in the morning, you’ll need to stay overnight (or longer!) in Fort Williams, a picture-perfect town located right next to Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis.

From Fort Williams, board the magical steam engine at 10:15 in the morning and enjoy the scenery on the ride to Mallaig! Unfortunately, they do not sell one-way tickets for this route, so you’ll need to book a return trip for £50 and get off in Mallaig.

Once in Mallaig, catching a ferry to Skye is super easy. The trip takes around 40 minutes and you can see your destination, Armadale, before departing. Keep in mind, this route only operates from March to October.

Psst! If you have time to discover more of the country, don’t miss these epic places to visit in Scotland .

Edinburgh to Isle of Skye by bus

Getting around Edinburgh Scotland

Similar to train travel, there is no direct bus route from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye. Instead, you’ll need to transit through one of the same two hubs: Inverness or Glasgow.

However, buses go directly to the village of Portree, located on Skye . Vibrant and happening, Portree is one of the best places to visit in Scotland ! You can book a tour from here to explore more of Skye, or take local buses operated by Stagecoach.

It’s possible to book the entire journey from Edinburgh to Portree as one ticket if booked through City Link . However, doing so results in a long 9-hour travel day with a late evening arrival.

It’s far more relaxing to break up the trip and stay overnight in Inverness or Glasgow. Plus, that way you can enjoy the scenery of the Scottish Highlands before sunset!

Portree through Inverness

Getting from Edinburgh to Inverness by bus is a breeze . There are typically 10 daily departures, all leaving from Edinburgh’s central bus station and taking just under four hours.

Fares cost about £9-11, and we recommend using Megabus to book the trip.

Traveling from Inverness to Portree, there are two daily buses — one in the morning and another in the evening. The trip time is 3.25 hours and it costs £40, but this route can only be booked using City Link.

Portree through Glasgow

Getting from Edinburgh to Glasgow is also super easy. Check out our detailed transportation guide for all the options for that first leg.

Once in Glasgow, catch a City Link bus to Portree. There are three departures a day, with a total travel time of 6.5-7 hours and a price of about £44.

Edinburgh to Isle of Skye by car

Isle of Skye Scotland

When it comes to flexibility and speed, nothing beats renting your own vehicle to travel from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye.

This option allows you to depart at any time and showcases the best scenery Skye has to offer. Plus, it could even be the cheapest option, especially when split among several people!

All the big, familiar car rental companies operate in Scotland. In the off-season, prices tend to be low, starting at just £12 a day. Use Discover Cars to easily compare rental companies and car types.

Keep in mind it’s most affordable to pick up and drop off a car in the same location.

Self-driving route

It takes approximately 4.25 hours to drive from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye bridge, the only entry point to the island. The drive is straightforward, following major roadways.

First, to exit Edinburgh, you’ll need to take the A90 until it merges with the M90. Next, you’ll pass over the Queensferry Crossing Bridge and continue for 40 minutes until the road combines with the A9.

From here, continue to the fork with the A89. The scenery gets particularly scenic from this junction, and the drive is also a little more demanding. Make sure to drive this portion in daylight!

Continue for just a few miles before merging with A86. This soon turns into the narrow but stunning A87 that leads right to the Isle of Skye.

Although road closures are not common, make sure to pay attention to weather conditions. Snow, ice, and flooding can shut roads down quickly and without notice, especially during the winter. Being Scotland, that’s one thing you can count on — unpredictable, rapidly changing weather!

Hello! Just checked the links at the bottom of your post that take me to guided tours. They mention at the availability booking that children under 4 years are not permitted. I have an 8month old baby, your picture seems to indicate your baby was roughly that age, did they allow you to book with them regardless?

A spectacular route north…

You’ll depart Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, or its largest city, Glasgow, and begin the journey north. Our route to Skye takes you via Loch Lomond via the Trossachs National Park . We’ll stop in a picturesque village, where you can relax over a cup of coffee or explore at your leisure. You’ll get stunning views of the UK’s largest expanse of fresh water, Loch Lomond. Your driver-guide will tell you the history and theories behind the ‘The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond’ song as you enjoy the stunning scenery of this area.

Cross the brooding expanse of Rannoch Moor and journey through Glen Coe…

As you continue further north into the Scottish Highlands, you’ll watch in awe as the landscape becomes more and more dramatic. Glen Coe is one of the most incredible places in Scotland. Learn the brutal story of the MacDonald Clan massacre and take in the weeping waterfalls that inhabit this incredible glen.

Fort William for lunch and Britain’s tallest mountain…

This highland town of Fort William marks the end of Scotland’s oldest and most popular long-distance walks, The West Highland Way. Here, you can take in views of Ben Nevis , the UK’s tallest peak. Standing at 1,345 metres above sea level, it is often known to both locals and visitors as simply ‘the Ben’.

Overnight: Inverness

A full day on the incredible Isle of Skye…

Your experienced and knowledgeable guide will ensure you get the most out of your day based on a variety of things such as the weather, your group and local events. You will enjoy sights such as the craggy Cuillin Mountains . The sharp peaks which rise up from the flatness of the surrounding terrain are the dominating feature of the island and can be seen from every other peninsula on Skye.

Lunch in Portree, Skye’s capital…

We will also include a stop at Portree, the colourful capital of Skye. Overlooking a sheltered bay, this scenic fishing village has a variety of food options, making it a perfect lunch spot.

Experience Skye’s dramatic landscapes…

We will also explore the Trotternish Peninsula . It is the most northerly of Skye’s peninsulas and it contains some of the most striking landscapes in Scotland. Here we will stop for photographs at The Kilt Rock ,  Mealt Waterfall and The Old Man of Storr .

Explore Urquhart Castle perched on the edge of Loch Ness…

Our day begins by visiting the most famous loch in the entire world… Loch Ness . It’s also one of Scotland’s largest, so large that every other lake and river in England and Wales could fit in with room to spare. In fact, the entire population of the world could fit into Loch Ness, and it’s got a monster in it too!

Cruise on Loch Ness and look out for the famous monster Nessie…

You can then hop on a Jacobite Cruise * to Nessie spot on the loch itself. As well as being very large and deep, Loch Ness has heavy deposits of peat, making it difficult for instruments to locate Nessie in the cloudy water — a perfect hiding location for a huge water-dwelling monster.

Explore the famous battlefield of Culloden…

Our next stop is at Culloden Battlefield *, the site of the last stand of the Jacobites against the British government forces on 16 April 1746. It was one of the most harrowing battles in British history. Jacobite supporters, seeking to re-establish the Stuart monarchy to the British thrones, joined together to fight the Duke of Cumberland’s government troops. It was the final pitched battle on British soil and, in less than an hour, around 1,600 men were slain – 1,500 of them Jacobites. You can experience everything about the events leading up to, during and after the battle in the impressive visitor centre and interactive exhibition, as well as having the chance to wander the land where the battle itself took place.

Wander the picturesque Highland town of Pitlochry…

We’ll then continue south to Pitlochry ; the geographical centre of Scotland and one of the gateways to the Highlands perched by the side of the River Tummel. Pitlochry has been a tourist centre since the 1860s thanks to Queen Victoria and Sir Walter Scott, who popularised the Highlands that boomed with the railways of the 1870s. We’ll then continue south to Edinburgh city centre, where our tour will end.**

*Please note that availability for the Jacobite Cruise may vary depending on season

**You may be provided with a complimentary train ticket for return to Glasgow

We had a great experience on our tour. Our tour guide Iain was thorough, well informed and funny. He made sure that our group found all of the best photo opportunities and even took us on some side adventures. He went out of his way to make sure we were safe, happy and got to feed the hairy coos! Highly recommended!

As a New Zealander, I learned the sad and tragic history of Scotland and its people, especially after visiting the battlefield at Culloden- and my heart was touched, and drawn out in sympathy for these brave warriors of old. Our tour guide, Steven B, was passionate about the history of his people, and he shared it amazingly well, so much so that you could not help but feel for him and his people. I have come to love and appreciate the Scots. The Highlands were stunningly beautiful, especially the Isle of Skye - and we had perfect weather the whole time.

I really couldn’t say enough good things about this tour. Our guide Alex was professional, knowledgeable, kind, and very funny. He took us to see as much as we could within reason and added extra if he could. Alex went above and beyond to make this a great experience and it truly was. It was so fascinating learning about the country and culture from a true native. The bed and breakfast was nice with a great selection of breakfast. Would highly recommend!

I booked the 5 day tour with the Hairy Coo and I can’t even put into words how incredible those 5 days were. John ‘the only King of the north’ was a fantastic tour guide. I have been on quite a few tours and John was the best guide I have ever had. He is knowledgeable and cares so much for his homeland, it’s truly remarkable. I can’t wait for the day when I come back to take this tour again, because I 110% will be back. He was right, I do feel like I left a part of myself in Scotland. Thank you John and the Hairy Coo!

It was my best experience by far ! William, our guide, was so kind. He told us so much things about the history of the country and had some great recommendations as well. He made so many stop so we can take pictures and enjoy our journey to the highlands. William, you made this trip so much better than what we expected. Thank you, i will cherish this memories i made with my mum. It’s really precious and i will never forget it. If you were not sure about booking this one day trip, you should go for it because it’s a once in a life time experience !

bus tour edinburgh to isle of skye

Organization 10/10 Picturesques landscapes 10/10 Loch Ness boatstour 10/10 (you can swim there at some places if you're careful) We were so lucky with our driver/guide Jamie 12/10 :) Interesting bits of Scottish history toilets during the stops were not so clean :(

I highly recommend this trip and The Hairy Coo bus company was the best. Our driver/guide was Peter. Peter was so pleasant and very personable. You will be very lucky if you get him for your 13 hour trip. He told stories and some history lessons too. Uugghh learning things on vacation. Just kidding. It was very informative. He played very pleasant music when he wasn't talking. We were in the first of 3 buses. A tip. You want to be in the first bus. You get your the bathroom breaks first and so lines for the females could get long. Our first stop was Callandar where we got to see the Hairy Coos. So striking Then we had a couple of brief but incredible stops for amazing pictures. Finally we arrived at Loch Ness. You have 2 hours to either take a 45 minute boat tour up and back on Loch Ness or spend time eating and touring the little town there. Is the boat tour worth the extra cost? Depends on the weather I guess. Even though the open air upstairs part is covered, if it is raining (which it was for us) you still get some wet. So most sat below. Here is the problem. You have limited viewing thru the window depending on where you sit. We had 3 mid 20s males sit one on each row so they could each be by a window thus blocking a family that could sit together on a row with a window. Since you have come all the way to see the Loch and look for Nessie then you should go ahead and do the boat tour. Especially if it isn't raining. Then sit up top and all views are good. This is no reflection on the tour operators. The scenery you will see both to and from Loch Ness is completely worth trip. Also there is plenty of time you can eat lunch at Loch Ness and do boat tour

Prepare yourselves for an educational, entertaining and natural beauty emersion into the wonders and beauty of the highlands of Scotland. You also might want to practice and prepare your singing voices and classic tune lyrics. On this three day, two night excursion you will not sit back and stare out the bus window! This is a proactive tour that requires and motivates your sense and history of Scotland. Guide Brian Smith brings a wealth of historical and natural world knowledge of Scotland together with an unflinching patriots perspective. The strife of the Scots and their historical quest for home freedom and rule mesh with the landscapes stunning isolations and stark, sweeping, stunning beauty. There is a lot to experience in the highlands and this tour puts you in face to face contact with much of it. Archaic Stone Age sights, battlefield and museums, Isle of Skye and the grittiness of Inverness and the isolation of Portree. Comfortable and safe buses with limited numbers of people ensure a dramatic and personal experience. A great return of value and a friendship with Scottish character. Highest recommendation and Brian thank you so much.

This is a great trip, even better in bad weather but this is Scotland so it is perfect just the way it is as seen in the photos. In one day we've experienced rain, fog, very sunny at one point at Loch Ness. Our guide and driver, Peter, is amazing, you laugh, here great music, listen to stories and get a free history lesson as you ride through the Highlands. It is a 12 hour trip but you don't feel it, you get back with even more energy you left off on the morning. The bus is very clean, the roads are very good, the stops are plenty for food, toilet breaks etc.
