Callaway’s HX Tour ball has been slightly redesigned for 2006, with changes to the cover and the production process.

This year sees the introduction of a revamped HX Tour ball, known as the “Improved” HX Tour. Callaway claims the balls are more durable and more consistent than the original model. We put them to the test to see how they compare to last year’s model. Design and Technology The HX Tour golf ball is a three-piece, solid-core golf ball with a urethane cover – a similar construction to most premium golf balls on the market today. Callaway’s Rule 35 golf balls were among the first such balls on the market in 2000, and the HX Tour represents the latest and greatest in the genre. A high-resilience rubber core is surrounded by a ionomer mantle layer and a thin thermoset urethane cover. The cover is only 0.018″ thick, much thinner than many other premium balls, which leaves more room for the core – the distance engine of the golf ball – while still leaving a thick enough layer of urethane to grip the grooves of your irons for plenty of short-game spin.

The most visible part of the HX Tour’s design difference is the patented HEX aerodynamic pattern on the cover. This geometric pattern of hexagonal and pentagonal shapes makes the HX Tour and Callaway’s other balls with the technology (HX Hot, HX Pearl, and Big Bertha balls) the only premium balls on the market without round dimples. The idea behind the HEX pattern is that the construction helps reduce drag during the flight of each shot while adding lift, especially toward the end of the ball’s flight. The HEX pattern also works to keep the ball on its intended line better in windy conditions. The HEX pattern used on the HX Tour and HX Tour 56 balls is more advanced than the pattern used on the company’s non-urethane balls – you can actually see how each indentation is multi-faceted, which gives you an idea of the precision required to produce these balls.

The way the hexagonal indentations fit together on the cover of the HX Tour also virtually eliminates the seam area that is prevalent on most other golf balls. Many experts believe that hitting a golf ball on the seam can increase distance, which is good off the tee when you can place the ball to take advantage of this phenomenon, but more troublesome on iron shots where you can’t be sure of where you’re going to contact the ball.

New to the HX Tour in the “Improved” version for 2006 is the RIM technology Callaway first used in the HX Tour 56 ball last year (and which first showed up on the Ben Hogan Tour Deep ball). The Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) process involves combining two materials into a cavity around the core and mantle layer. The ensuing chemical reaction creates a thermoset urethane cover. In addition to allowing the cover to be ultra-thin, Callaway also claims this process creates a core and mantle layer that are perfectly centered within the cover, which should lead to greater consistency from shot to shot. This centering process also creates six extra-deep hexagonal depressions in the cover, which Callaway refers to as the Sub-Hex design.

Esthetically, the HX Tour is as simple as black and white. The only other color than the bright white of the cover – a brighter white than the previous HX Tour model – is the black of the Callaway Golf logo on each pole and the HX•TOUR side stamp. (The dot on the side stamp is one way to tell the improved HX Tour from the original.)

Feel and Spin The HX Tour is the firmer of the two HX Tour varieties. While the HX Tour 56 has a soft, balata-like sound and feel, the HX Tour has a firm, satisfying “click” off irons and the putter and feels especially solid on drives. But like the Titleist Pro V1x, the HX Tour is noticeably softer than Surlyn-covered distance balls.

In terms of spin, the improved version of the HX Tour seemed to spin more on wedge shots than the original version. This was especially noticeable on little finesse shots around the green and partial-swing wedges from inside 80 yards. On shots where I would expect the original HX Tour ball to take a small bounce then roll forward a few feet, the improved HX Tour would stop dead after the bounce – or spin back a foot or two. On chips, the ball seems to really grip the grooves and has a “gummy” feel off the club.

Off the driver, woods and long irons – where the firm mantle layer comes into play – the HX Tour is a low-spin golf ball. It also launches higher than the HX Hot and HX Pearl three-piece distance balls that Callaway makes (and that I play in the mushy early and late-season conditions around here), which contributes to the HX Tour being a seriously long golf ball. Leading us to…

Distance and Durability The HX Tour is a seriously long golf ball. It’s the longest ball Callaway makes (the HX Tour 56 is a couple yards shorter off the driver), and comparable to the Pro V1x and other premium three-piece balls. In fact, the improved HX Tour is longer off the tee for me than the original version by about five yards. Not a huge difference, but I’ll take every extra yard I can get. Off the irons, I found the improved HX Tour to produce distances that were virtually the same as the original ball.

Callaway touts the improved HX Tour ball to also have improved durability. With a cover this thin, durability can certainly be a factor. I know some players with aggressive swings who think the HX Tour cover shreds a little too easily. That’s the tradeoff of urethane-covered balls in general, and the improved HX Tour is no different. If you play any of the new wedges with high-spin grooves, you’re going to take some of the cover off the ball on full shots.

In my experience with the HX Tour and other urethane-covered balls, I haven’t found groove marks to impede the performance of the ball – and my R&D contacts back that up. I played an improved HX Tour for 18 holes and while it showed the wear at the end of the round, it was still completely playable. If “durability” to you means “looking brand new for 18 holes,” you’ll probably go through a ball every few holes. But if it means having a playable ball, then you shouldn’t have any trouble with the improved HX Tour from a durability standpoint. It’s a matter of personal preference.

Conclusion I’ve played all three versions of the HX Tour golf ball, from the prototype “Callaway Black” ball of two years ago to the original retail HX Tour to the new improved model. The change from the prototype to the newest version is incremental, but it is definitely progress. The improved HX Tour is an all-around solid ball – long off the tee, plenty of spin around the greens, stable in the wind.

The HX Tour has met with a solid reaction from Callaway’s tour professionals as well. While some pros stick with older ball models for years after new ones are introduced, every one of Callaway’s staff pros has switched over the the improved HX Tour (or the improved version of HX Tour 56) this year. If validation from tour players matters, there you go. And if it matters what I play, the improved HX Tour is in my bag as well.

The improved HX Tour is available in 12-ball boxes at an MSRP of $50, though the street price is as low as $39.95.

I have been playing the Prov1 & 1x and would not even think of using any other ball… until a friend gave me a couple of the Callaways HX Tour 56 balls. I played 18 with them and I was so impressed that I bought a doz. and have played with them for about 4 weeks now. I’m an 8 hcp and average 275 drives. I can say that the Prov1x ball is just a little longer (5 – 8 yrds ) but the HX Ball seems to hold the line much better = more fairways. But the really nice thing that I like is the great feel of the HX 56 off the irons and chip shots around the green. I can’t tell any different in distance betweet the two off the irons.

I would say that the average golfer would benifit from playing the HX 56 ball, not because it will be a magic cure, but because it will play better off the irons. (GIR)

We shouldn’t be shocked by the fact that Callaway has come out with a new and improved golf ball in 2022.  Whenever a new year dawns, they never cease to disappoint when it comes to equipment. 

What’s surprising is the Hex Tour Soft has remained somewhat under the radar so far this year.  A few folks have put it in their bag and swear by it, but it seems overshadowed by some of the other balls in its class so far.  My guess is that won’t last too long.

Who Should Buy the Callaway Hex Tour Golf Ball?

You probably won’t find Tour Pros playing the Hex Tour Soft ball.  Their swing speeds are too fast to maximize the benefits this ball has to offer. 

However, for mere mortals like you and I, playing a golf ball that provides both distance and control is just as important as it is for the Pros. 

If you’re a player that doesn’t swing the club more than 90 or 100mph, the Callaway Hex Tour Soft is a great option. 

And if you’re on a budget, even better.  This ball won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Design and Technology

The first thing that comes to mind when we think of this golf ball is the Hex name.  If you’re familiar with Callaway golf balls, you’ve probably heard about the Hex dimple pattern.  Each dimple is shaped like a hexagon and proven to be aerodynamically superior.  This is really nothing new for Callaway but it’s worth noting.

The core of the Hex Tour Soft is designed to maximize distance.  Compared to previous generations of this ball, this core is more reactive and explosive.  That’s good news if you like distance with your long clubs. 

Distance isn’t the whole story with the Hex Tour Soft though.  The new and improved high-resiliency cover is engineered to provide spin and feel on short shots where you need it most.  Even though you might not zip back wedges like the balata balls of yesteryear, the Hex Tour Soft still affords plenty of control.

Lastly, this ball’s low compression gives you the soft, solid feel most golfers desire on every shot, whether it be a hybrid or a three-foot putt.

Our Experience

I’ve always loved Callaway golf balls but am more versed in their top-end balls like the Chrome Soft. With that said, there are plenty of guys in my regular group that play the Hex Tour Soft and swear by it.  These guys are higher handicappers with slower clubhead speed, and swings that are far from perfect.  But they almost unanimously tout this ball’s performance in terms of both distance and feel.  They also think this is one of the most durable balls they’ve found as well.  These cats hit the occasional tree, cart path, rock, and cactus, and say that this ball more than stands up to some abuse.  The price is also attractive for them.  If they had to replace a brand new ProV1 every time they scuffed it up, they might not be able to afford golf as a hobby.

Finding the proper golf ball for your game will significantly increase your chances of scoring well and enjoying your time on the golf course. The Callaway golf balls are an excellent choice for a wide range of players.

The Callaway Hex Tour Soft is not a golf ball that is as widely talked about, yet it is one that players should certainly consider adding to their bag.

Features and Benefits 

The Callaway Hex Tour Soft golf ball is a bit different than some of the other Callaway balls on the market. Of course, we know that with a name like Hex, the traditional Callaway dimple aerodynamics are in place.

The Callaway Hex Tour Soft is not the newest release from Callaway; however, this could work out to be a good thing for those golfers on a budget.

Let’s take a more detailed look at some of the features that the Callaway Hex Tour Soft has in place. 

Feel in a golf ball is an extremely important benefit. In my years playing professionally, I would take a golf ball that has a better feel over one that had more distance.

A player needs to have control over their golf ball. Choosing a ball with a great feel allows for this to happen. 

Since the Hext Tour Soft Golf Ball is a three-piece ball with a responsive Surlyn cover , we found that it had an excellent feel .

If you want to control the ball flight or the distance in your short game, you should be able to with the Hex Tour Soft Golf Ball in place. 

Remember that this is not truly a premium tour level Callaway golf ball. If you need tour level performance around a green look for something like the Chrome soft. 

Overall the Hex Tour Soft Golf Ball is a low spin ball . From the tee, this will prove to be a significant benefit. Around the green, however, there is still enough spin for players to get some spin and control. 

Remember that the Hex Tour Soft Golf ball is a 3 piece ball. This allows for a high energy core, in addition to having receptiveness and spin when the wedges are used.

If you are worried about your ability to stop your short irons on a green, this Hex Tour Soft golf ball could do the trick. 

Compression

The Callaway Hex Tour Soft golf ball is a low compression ball . If your swing speed is average or even a bit less than average, this will be a good golf ball for you.

Golfers need to remember that although lower compression is considered to be a positive, it is not a good fit for all players. 

Golfers need to understand that the compression rating of a ball needs to be closely matched to a golfer’s swing speed. The more speed you have, the higher compression that you need.

We look at the lower compression of the Hex Tour Soft as a positive. A player that struggles to get distance will see improvements with the Hex Tour Soft. 

The Hex Tour Soft golf balls are a distance ball with good greenside spin and feel. However, if you consider the category or the main strength of this ball, it is still distance.

Most golfers are looking to add some extra yards to their game. Therefore a few distance-enhancing technologies are included with this ball. 

For starters, the HEX aerodynamics will lead to a lower spin from the tee. The low spin produces greater roll and longer drives. The HEX pattern essentially allows for a ball to move through the air with quite a bit less drag.

All golf balls will face some kind of resistance as the ball travels. Callaway believes that the Hex aerodynamics allow for the least resistance. We can’t say we disagree. 

This is also a three-piece golf ball, which allows for some enhanced distance technology internally. Anytime you can add an extra layer of performance, you will see the golf ball fly a bit further. 

Golf balls built for mid handicappers and high handicappers need to be durable. Durability allows for a golf ball cover to stay in great shape, regardless of the way it was hit. If a ball is hit into a bunker or along some rough dirt, you will not want it to scratch. 

Golf ball covers are made with different materials. The golf ball manufacturer needs to find a balance between the spin and feel the cover offers, with the durability. The Surlyn cover on the Hex Tour Soft Golf ball is known for its durability. 

Surlyn is a tough material on the outside of the ball; however, it still allows this to be a lower compression golf ball. 

The Callaway Hex Tour soft is not the newest release from Callaway. Typically when a golf ball has been on the market for a bit, the price will start to drop. The interesting thing about the way the Callaway Hex Tour are sold, is that they come in a 24 pack. 

When you first look at the pricing of this golf ball you may think that it is quite expensive. However, once you consider that you are getting 24 golf balls for the price of 12, the situation improves significantly. 

Another thing to remember about price is that sometimes durability will come into play as well. A golf ball that is built with a Surlyn cover like this should be safe to use for more than one round. 

The Surlyn cover will hold up against scratches or marks from a bad shot or a ball that bounces along a cart path. We always try to get two or three rounds out of each golf ball that we use.

The more you can achieve this; the lower your overall golf ball expenses will be. Take advantage of this being a 48 ball pack and use it for a few months of golf.

Alternatives

You can probably see from our Callaway Hex Tour Soft review and ratings that this ball is one that is worth considering. If you have something against this ball or Callaway in general, here are a few alternatives with similar performance.

Remember, no two golf balls are going to perform precisely the same, but these will have very similar overall benefits. 

Bridgestone e12 Soft

The Bridgestone e12 golf ball is a three-piece ball that is again made with a Surlyn cover. You will find quite a few similarities between the e12 soft and the Callaway Hex Tour Soft golf ball.

The major difference between these two is going to be the dimple pattern and the core. 

The Bridgestone golf balls feature the delta dimple pattern . This is a pattern created by Delta to make the ball have less drag and smoother airflow around it. If there were ever a company to know about getting something to move through the air faster, Delta would be it. 

In addition, the Active Acceleration Mantle helps to make sure that the ball has a very high initial velocity. You may notice your ball speeds on this one going a bit higher than that with the Callaway Hex Tour Soft.

Titleist Velocity Golf Balls

Titleist golf balls are often known as being some of the highest performing on the market. The Titleist Velocity ball is known for long distance and a mid compression cor e.

Just like the Callaway HEX Tour Soft, the construction of the Titleist golf ball includes a Surlyn cover. 

Even though the Velocity is a two-piece ball, it is still considered to be high quality. Titleist knows how to make sure a golf ball has technology both around the green and off the tee as well.

This would be a golf ball to choose from if you are looking for a bit more distance but not quite as soft a feel. 

This is the longest ball in the Titleist golf ball lineup, and it also has one of the lower compressions. If you want straighter shots and higher performance from the tee, choose the Velocity. 

TaylorMade Noodle Neon Matte

The TaylorMade Noodle Neon Matte is another long-distance golf ball with a soft feel and great control around the green. One of the things that set this golf ball apart is that it comes in quite a few colors. 

As you may remember, the Callaway HEX Tour soft only comes in a white soft cover design. The Noodle ball is made to have higher ball flight , low spin , and a nice feel on the green .

These balls are made to be lower priced but still have a similar feel to tour golf balls. The cover on the Noodle is a bit different than the HEX Tour Soft golf balls.

The cover is made with an Iothane material . This will provide low drag and plenty of versatility as well. Since the paint on the Noodle ball is matte technology, there is no glare, and it is easy to see. 

If you have not tried the Callaway Hex Tour Soft golf ball, now is the time to do it. This 3 piece construction ball will help golfers of all handicaps get the performance that they need.
