Taking a look back at the cruising industry: 1990s

by - 28 Jun 2019

Explorer of the Seas - Royal Caribbean

The 90s saw plenty of ships being launched, many of which are still sailing today or even were the first ships for what are now some of the world’s most popular cruise lines!

We decided to take a look back at the ships that launched the 1990s and see which vessels set sail in the nineties.

  • Royal Caribbean acquired Viking Serenade from Royal Admiral Cruises. The ship was converted from a cruiseferry into a cruise ship by the line and sailed for 12 years under Royal Caribbean.
  • Celebrity Cruises was formed! Their first ship, Meridian, joined the fleet in February and a second ship, Horizon, joined in May.
  • Fred. Olsen Lines also received MS Bayard, which sailed between Norway and Denmark. She was sold the following year and is now sailing as MS Moby Zazà with the Italian shipping company, Moby Lines.
  • Carnival Fantasy completed her maiden voyage, though she was just called Fantasy back then. The ship was built as the lead ship of the Fantasy-class of ships for the line and was rebranded as Carnival Fantasy in 2007. She still sails for the line out of Alabama cruise port, Mobile as the oldest ship in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet!
  • The last ship to join the Royal Caribbean fleet without ‘ of the Seas’  set sail in 199o. Nordic Empress was the first mainstream cruise ship designed for the three- and four-day cruise market. She was renamed in 2004 as Empress of the Seas and continues to sail for the line today!

Carnival Fantasy - Carnival Cruise Line

  • Another Carnival Cruise Line ship sets sail – Carnival Ecstasy. This ship was also launched without the prefix ‘ Carnival ‘  to her name, when she was christened by television hostess, entertainer and longtime Carnival spokesperson, Kathie Lee Gifford. She is still in operation with Carnival Cruise Line, sailing from ports in the US to the Caribbean.
  • Regal Princess also had her maiden voyage in 1991, not to be confused with the Regal Princess we know and love today! The initial Regal Princess was officially named by the former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in August ’91, from which the ship entered service for the Caribbean. She was eventually transferred to the P&O Australia fleet in 2007 where she was rebranded as Pacific Dawn for sailings to the South Pacific.
  • Monarch of the Seas set off on her maiden voyage as Royal Caribbean’s second ship in the third generation Sovereign Class. At her time of completion, Monarch of the Seas was one of the largest cruise ships in the world! She now operates under Pullmantur Cruises as MS Monarch.

  • Dreamward also set off on her maiden voyage this year, as the tenth ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. She was renamed Norwegian Dream in 1998, before being sold to Star Cruise and renamed SuperStar Gemini.
  • Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas joined the fleet in 1992, offering short sailings in the Caribbean from Florida. She also has a 1/8th scale model ship which launched in 2005 and offers river cruises around Paris!

  • Ryndam joined the Holland America Line as another ship in the Statendam Class. She was sold to P&O Cruises Australia in 2015 and renamed Pacific Aria where she continues to sail out of Australia ports year round.

  • Crystal Symphony started sailing for Crystal Cruises in 1995 and is the longest-serving ship in the Crystal Cruises fleet, continuing to sail still today!
  • P&O Cruises’ first new ship joined the fleet as Oriana , now the smallest of seven ships currently in service. She also holds the Golden Cockerel as the fastest ship in the fleet, as well as the oldest and longest-serving.
  • Princess Cruises’ Sun Class launched with Sun Princess which, at the time of completion, was one of the largest cruise ships in the world. Sun Princess also starred on the TV show, Love Boat: The Next Wave in the late 90s.
  • Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas joined the fleet in 1995, to become one of the line’s most travelled ships having been based in Asia, Australia, South Pacific, Alaska, Central America, the Caribbean, the Baltics, the Mediterranean and the Middle East during her 19-year career! In 2016, Royal Caribbean sold the ship to Marella Cruises, then TUI Cruises, for her to be renamed Marella Discovery 2.
  • Joining sister-ship, Silver Cloud, Silversea’s Silver Wind set sail on her maiden voyage in 1995 and still operates with the line today.

She now operates under Windstar Cruises as Star Legend.
  • Galaxy entered service for Celebrity Cruises , alongside sister-ship Century, where she operated week-long Caribbean itineraries. In 1998, Galaxy was the setting of BBC’s  The Cruise,  which made Jane McDonald famous! She was renamed Celebrity Galaxy in 2008, before being sold to Marella Cruises in 2017 as Marella Explorer.
  • Carnival Cruise Line launched the first passenger ever built to be over 100,000 tons – known as Carnival Destiny – the lead ship of the Sunshine Class. In 2013, Carnival Destiny was renamed Carnival Sunshine following major renovations. She continues to sail to the Caribbean for the line today.
  • Another Carnival Cruise ship joining the fleet in 1996 was Carnival Inspiration , then just Inspiration. She was renamed Carnival Inspiration in 2007.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line’s Westward was sold to Fred. Olsen in 1996 to become Black Watch , currently the longest-serving ship still in operation for the line.
  • MS Veendam was launched for Holland America Line, named after the capital of Northern Netherland’s peat colonies. She still sails for the line today, cruising to South America as well as Canada & New England.
  • Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas launched the line’s Vision Class in 1996, of which she still continues to operate under. Splendour of the Seas also joined the Vision Class, though she was sold to Marella Cruises in 2016 to become Marella Discovery.

  • The second Century-class ship for Celebrity Cruises joined in 1997 as Mercury. She was renamed by the cruise line in 2008 to Celebrity Mercury, then eventually sold to Marella Cruises as Mein Schiff Herz where she operates beside sister-ship Marella Explorer, former Celebrity Galaxy!
  • Holland America Line’s lead ship of the Rotterdam Class launched in ’97 as MS Rotterdam . She was the sixth ship in the fleet to bear the name, after SS Rotterdam (1959) and the city. She continues to sail for the line around Europe and South America.
  • 1997 also saw MSC Cruises acquire StarShip Atlantic to become Melody. In 2012, MSC Cruises retired the ship where she was sold, renamed Qing and converted into floating accommodation. In 2016, the ship was sold again, this time for demolition and scrapping.
  • Princess Cruises welcomed Dawn Princess to the fleet in ’97, built as a Sun-class ship and sister-ship to Sun Princess and Sea Princess. She was eventually sold to P&O Cruises Australia and renamed Pacific Explorer in 2017 when she was christened by Dora the Explorer!

  • Saga acquired the Sagafjord in 1997 and renamed her Saga Rose. She sailed for the line until 2009 when she failed to meet the required regulations. Saga Rose was eventually moved to the Yangtze River where she was sadly scrapped in 2011. The ship still holds the world records for the most world cruises ever completed by a ship – at 44 altogether!

Rhapsody of the Seas - Royal Caribbean

  • Paradise joined the Carnival Cruise Line fleet in ’98, later to be renamed Carnival Paradise in line with the cruise line’s fleetwide rebrand. She was initially launched as the world’s first completely non-smoking cruise ship, though Carnival Cruise Line discontinued this due to poor revenue. She continues to sail today, offering short sailings to the Caribbean and Mexico.
  • Elation also joined the Carnival Cruise Line fleet this year, and too underwent the rebrand to Carnival Elation in 2007. The ship was the first to be fitted with Azipod propulsion units – offering better fuel efficiency.

Upon departing on her maiden voyage, Voyager of the Seas was the largest cruise ship in the world, to be overtaken the following year by Explorer of the Seas . Voyager of the Seas was the first ship in the fleet to include a rock-climbing wall and the first ice-skating rink at sea.
  • 1999 was the year Seabourn acquired Royal Viking Sun for the Royal Viking Line, where she was renamed Seabourn Sun. However, shortly after, Seabourn transferred the ship to Holland America Line as Prinsendam, so that they could concentrate on smaller vessels.

A Guide to All 27 Carnival Cruise Ships

With 27 ships and hundreds of itineraries, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone.

Carnival Cruise Line offers numerous cruise options worldwide with a fleet of 27 ships. Their cruises include all the hits: celebrity chef-driven restaurants, onboard rollercoasters, dedicated kids venues, serene spa moments, adults-exclusive pool decks, and exciting destinations. Carnival has it all — and can be relatively affordable. But which ship is right for you?

After sailing on eight Carnival cruises, including voyages on its oldest ship, Carnival Elation , and the newer Carnival Celebration, I’ve learned that sailing on newer ships is generally more expensive, and older vessels are more budget-friendly. However, I often consider more than the total cost before booking a cruise. I look at the ports of call, the space-to-guest ratio, the amenities and onboard activities, and the launch point.

When I select a sailing, I book through Carnival Cruise Line’s reservation number to see if I can snag an exclusive deal not listed online. Carnival's free-to-join loyalty program, the Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) Club, offers deals like reduced deposits, onboard credit, and room upgrades. The more you book with the cruise line, the better your deals will be.

Before committing to a cruise, I break down the price per person per night, particularly if I need multiple cabins because I'm traveling with a group. I recommend you take advantage of Carnival's convenient 24-hour reservation hold, which displays the total cost, itinerary, and a countdown timer so you know when to purchase to secure the locked-in price.

Here, find guidance on every Carnival cruise ship, from the newest to the oldest.

Initially built in 2019 for Costa Cruises, this ship joined the Carnival fleet in 2023. Carnival Venezia is ideal if you’re looking for a ship that celebrates one of Italy’s most iconic cities. Venice is the inspiration behind the indoor and outdoor areas, including the atrium, modeled after Piazza San Marco, and the Carnevale Lounge, inspired by Venetian masquerades. During my recent sailing, I found all the Carnival classics, like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint, a thrilling ropes course, dive-in movies, and plenty of themed deck parties. If you’re looking to relax, it has that, too. Rent cabanas or lounge in the ocean-view whirlpools at Loft 19, where attentive staff take care of everything, like delivering you fruit and chilled towels. My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched.

Carnival Mardi Gras is a nod to Carnival’s first ship, also named Mardi Gras, which was launched in 1972. The vessel has six onboard zones where families can have fun together, including the Ultimate Playground, where BOLT and the SportsSquare are located. Of course, there’s no Mardi Gras without New Orleans, so the French Quarter zone is where you’ll find Big Easy-inspired amenities like an Emeril Lagasse restaurant.

Standout Amenities: Carnival WaterWorks with multiple slides and water features; BlueIguana Tequila Bar for poolside libations; an onboard steakhouse with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its exceptional wine list

Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny ) is 10 years old and a fan favorite. The lower guest capacity, at just over 3,000 for double occupancy, means you won’t have to fight hoards of people to get to and from activities. Families who want even more cabin space should book one of the aft-view extended balcony rooms with great wake views and ample private outdoor space.

Ship Capacity: 2,052 double occupancy; 2,606 total guests

Standout Amenities: Duke’s Piano Bar for nightly sing-a-longs; Alchemy Bar for custom cocktails; BlueIguana Cantina for breakfast and lunch options with a Mexican twist

Carnival Elation is currently the fleet's oldest ship, debuting in March 1998, and the only cruise ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville, Florida. Even though the ship is small, with a total guest capacity of 2,606, it’s ideal for a quick weekend away if you want a mix of relaxation and high-energy activities. I've sailed the most on Carnival Elation since the ship sails from my hometown of Jacksonville. Even though it's the oldest in the fleet, I love that the sailings are short weekend trips where I can sit outside in the sun enjoying a Guy's Burger Joint smash burger before heading inside to see a show or play bingo. And because the ship is so small, it's easy to navigate, and I always end up making friends with the delightful crew onboard.

Carnival Destiny is powered by a diesel-electric plant, based on six Sulzer medium-speed turbo-charged diesel generator sets providing power at 6,600V, 60Hz: four are 16 cylinders in V form with a rated output of 11,520kW at 514rpm, and two are twelve cylinders in V form with a rated output of 8,640kW at 514rpm. The vessel is fitted with an ABB Industria electrical propulsion pack.

Carnival Destiny has a cruising speed of 20 knots and is able to operate at sea for up to 17 days continuously.

The vessel is fitted with six thruster units with controllable pitch propellers, three forward and three aft, each driven by one 1,720kW motor, and has computer-controlled retractable fin stabilisers from the UK-based firm, Brown Brothers.

The vessel is equipped with 22 Harding lifeboats that are fitted in a wholly-dedicated semi-open deck (deck 4). Each boat can carry 150 people and allows full emergency embarkation in the stowed position. They can be lowered in a single operation, reducing the overall time required for boarding and launching.

Carnival Destiny has a maximum passenger capacity of 3,360 and carries a crew of 1,000. The vessel has a total of 1,321 passenger cabins, including eight 36m² penthouse suites, 40 suites of 27m² and a further 756 standard outside cabins, measuring approximately 18m², with balconies or windows. The standard inside cabins measure appoximately 16m².

With a total of 16 decks, the configuration of Carnival Destiny makes it easy for passengers to find their way around, the main entertainment and recreation decks being located between the passenger decks. A total of 27 Schindler elevators, 18 of which are for passenger use, facilitate movement around the ship.

All the main public areas radiate from the rotunda, a central nine-deck atrium. The rotunda’s flagship bar on deck 3 offers a view up through the skylight on sun deck 11.

With an auditorium occupying three decks and a stage complex that takes up five, Carnival Destiny’s main theatre, the palladium show lounge, is the largest seen on any cruise ship and can seat 1,600 people. A separate aft lounge seats 600 people.

The ship has two main restaurants, both occupying two decks. The main restaurant is aft and seats 1,050 while the forward restaurant seats 750. The upper-deck sun and sea lido seats 868. In addition, passengers can choose from the 24-hour pizza parlour, buffet and salad bars, Italian and Chinese buffets and the grille, which serves American-style fast food.

New innovations on Carnival Destiny include the side deck, consisting of open promenades that run the length of the ship on both sides and a 525ft long, fully-enclosed double-width promenade called destiny’s way. Comprising bars and cafés, a tuxedo rental, a flower shop and a video game and virtual reality emporium, destiny’s way ends in the three-deck high captain’s hall.

The ‘millionaire’s club’ casino offers high-rollers tables, with minimum chips of $100.

Sports facilities on-board include a gymnasium, an aerobics room, whirlpools, and sauna, steam and massage rooms. The nautica jogging track on sun deck 11 is positioned over the sun and sea pool.

The ship offers a teenage entertainment programme and separate children’s facilities, including a play centre with its own gym and pool.

THE CRUISES OF '97

Cruise itineraries are always subject to change, and rates can vary according to season. For up-to-date information, contact a travel agent. In the cruise schedules, each entry lists, in order, the cruise line, ship, departure date, length of cruise, itinerary and minimum rate in U.S. dollars. These rates are the lowest available, per person, based on two people in one cabin. Since these lowest-priced accommodations are booked early, they may not be available. Listings were compiled by freelance writer and editor Frances Shemanski. CARIBBEAN FROM ARUBA

Complete Map of Carnival Fleet by Homeport & List of Ships

No cruise line is as large and well-represented in cruising as Carnival. The line is the largest in the North American market, with roughly two dozen ships sailing from ports across the United States, from Long Beach to Galveston to Miami to Baltimore to San Juan.

From smaller, older ships like the Carnival Fantasy (in service since 1990) to huge, brand-new ships like the Carnival Horizon (in service since 2018), the cruise line has a ton of variety in the ships that it sails. One common theme, however, is the distinctive red funnel that is a trademark of Carnival’s ships.

And if you are looking for that funnel, we have just the map for you. With more than 20 ships in service, it can be tough to keep trap of which ships call which port home. In addition, the line regularly moves ships to ports around the country, making it even more difficult to know which ship is cruising from where.

Below, we’ve put together a map to help you see visually which ships sail from which port. Simply click on the markers to see the ships. For busy ports such as Miami, zoom in to see each individual marker.

Keep in mind that this map shows only home ports for ships currently sailing from the United States.

Map of Carnival Ships

In addition, we’ve also put together a list of all of these ships where you can see exactly where each ship is ported and more information. The table is fully sortable, so you can order them by which port they sail from, from newest to oldest, or from largest to smallest.

Keep in mind that this table and map will change regularly. As the seasons change, so do the cruise ship locations. For example, Seattle sees an influx of ships in the summer for the Alaskan cruising season, but those ships depart in September for other trips.

As well, Carnival continues to add to its fleet. The next ship from the cruise line, Carnival Panorama , is set to debut in late 2019 and sail from the Port of Long Beach.

Carnival Sunrise Itineraries

Carnival sunrise review, review of carnival sunrise.

The 1999-built/2013-reconstructed Carnival Sunrise cruise ship was built as "Carnival Triumph" and inaugurated on October 30, 1999. After a major refurbishment in 2013 ( Fun Ship 2.0 ), the liner received a second emergency backup generator and top-notch fire detection technology. The Triumph was also re-decorated; with added new bars, lounges and entertainment options. As vessel class, Carnival Triumph is second of all three Destiny-class sisterships - together with Destiny-Sunshine and Victory-Radiance .

The vessel (IMO number 9138850) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308045000) and registered in Nassau .

IMPORTANT : Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Carnival Sunrise was taken out of service in 2020-2021, and planned to restart cruises on March 3, 2022 (2-night itinerary out of PortMiami to Nassau Bahamas ).

  • A total of 92x Carnival Sunrise cruises scheduled for the period between November 5, 2020, and April 30, 2022, were canceled. The canceled program was based on homeporting in Fort Lauderdale (Nov 2020 - May 2021) and Miami (May 2021 - Apr 2022).
  • The canceled Fort Lauderdale cruise schedule included roundtrips to Western Caribbean (5-day Ocho Rios Jamaica and Grand Cayman), Bahamas (4-day Half Moon Cay and Nassau), Eastern Caribbean (5-day Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, Nassau) plus a 6-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary visiting Amber Cove, Grand Turk Island and Half Moon Cay.
  • The canceled Miami cruise schedule included roundtrips to Eastern Caribbean (8-day Half Moon Cay, St Thomas USVI, San Juan Puerto Rico, Amber Cove Dominican Rep), Eastern Caribbean (7-day Grand Turk, San Juan Puerto Rico, St Thomas USVI, Amber Cove), Eastern Caribbean (6-day Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Amber Cove), Eastern Caribbean (5-day Grand Turk, Princess Cays, Nassau), Southern Caribbean (8-day Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Aruba, Curacao), Western Caribbean (7-day Grand Cayman, Roatan, Belize City, Cozumel).

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Sunrise cruise ship (Carnival Triumph)

The 3000-passenger ship Carnival Triumph's theme was ”Great Cities of the World”. In 2019 (March-April) the ship entered drydock for ~USD 200 million refurbishment , after which it was renamed "Carnival Sunrise". The refitted liner was transformed into Sunshine-Class vessel - having the same facilities and amenities as the sistership Carnival Sunshine (former Carnival Destiny, refitted in 2013 for USD 155 million).

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Sunrise staterooms (1492 total, in 32 categories) include 54 Suites, 522 Balcony, 326 Oceanview and 611 Inside cabins, most of which are sized 185 ft2 / 17 m2. CCL Sunrise ship also has 89 Cloud 9 Spa cabins and 46 wheelchair-accessible cabins. Most cabin balconies are sized 35 ft2 / 3 m2. The largest are the Captain’s Suites (500 ft2 / 46 m2 plus 150 ft2 / 14 m2 terrace) accommodating up to 5 passengers.

The boat has 13 passenger decks , of which 10 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Carnival Sunrise offers many of the Fun Ship 2.0 additions in terms of dining - Guy's Burger Joint, Cucina del Capitano, BlueIguana Cantina. The line made a few adjustments to the existing venues and also added the outstanding specialty restaurant, Chopsticks. There are two Main Dining Rooms onboard the Sunrise: Sunset, at the midship, and double-deck Sunrise located aft. The complimentary Punchliner Comedy Brunch, which is a sea day exclusive, features 5-minute teasers every hour on the hour from 9 am to 1:30 pm.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Carnival made a heavy investment in lights and sound for its shows on Carnival Breeze and has taken a step further on Sunrise. An ultra-HD graphics package is beamed onto a vast screen and the performers use it as a backdrop of their show. A number of themed shows take place in ship's Liquid Lounge, which doubles as the 800-seat main Theater. Because the room was initially designed as a theater with two stories, it's impossible to feature an intimate atmosphere.

The Sunrise ship offers a complete list of activities and entertainment for each age group and taste - from ballroom scene dancing, classical music concerts, tea time and art auctions to a hairy chest and knobby knees contests, bingo, and karaoke.

In comparison to Carnival Sunshine, Sunrise has smaller-sized WaterWorks located midship (aft on Sunshine).

Carnival Sunshine WaterWorks

Sunrise also lacks SkyCourse (rope course adjacent to WaterWorks).

Carnival Sunrise Wiki

Triumph was Carnival's first-ever liner with mobile phone systems ("Cellular At Sea" by Wireless Maritime Services). This partnership (between AT&T and MTN Sat / Maritime Telecommunications Network) allowed passengers to use their cell phones at sea to call directly at any time.

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built Carnival Triumph was christened by godmother Madeleine Arison - wife of Micky Arison (Carnival Corporation's Chairman). This is a Post-Panamax vessel (can't pass through Panama Canal ), launched on July 1 and with its inaugural cruise/maiden voyage on October 30, 1999. Th

e interior design theme is "Great Cities of the World".

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade  was done in 2013.

Fun fact is that this Carnival ship had a namesake - the 2017-launched "MOL Triumph". The vessel is among the world's largest boxships/container carriers (capacity 20170 TEUs) and is operated by MOL Shipping .

Sunrise ship's godmother is Kelly Arison - daughter of Micky Arison. The vessel's christening ceremony was on May 23, 2019, held at Manhattan Cruise Passenger Terminal in Port NYC New York . The naming ceremony featured a 4-ft (1,2-m) high champagne bottle sculpture (filled with confetti) which was custom-made by Romero Britto (1963-born Brazilian artist).

Sunrise ship's Captains are Bruno Palomba (during the drydock) and Isidoro Renda (after the launch). Captain Isidoro Renda (Italian, Naples graduate) is with Carnival since 2010 (starting as Second Officer) and Captain since 2016. Its previous service was with TIRRENIA Ferries and MSC Cruises . Ship's other officers include Mauro Fabbrini (Chief Engineer), Nicola Tonelli (Chief Engineer), and Caroline Bourke (Hotel Director).

Carnival Sunrise refurbishment 2024 review

The vessel's first drydocking (as Carnival Sunrise) was in 2022, conducted in February-March 2024, at Navantia Cadiz. The ship left Miami on Feb 1st and arrived in Cadiz on Feb 10th.

The 2-week drydocking project was for general maintenance works (technical overhaul, classification inspections, minor steel works), indoor renovation works, as well as hull cleaning/painting, including the addition of CCL's new hull livery (red-white-blue).

Refurbishment/renovations received all public areas (facilities and venues) as well as all passenger staterooms.

During the drydocking was also added CCL's new signature lounge the Heroes Tribute Bar.

Carnival Triumph-Sunrise ship conversion 2019 refurbishment review

These Travelers Have a Secret: They Love Cheap Cruises on Old Ships

R oyal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, a cruise ship over five times as large as the Titanic, is preparing for its inaugural voyage in late January. A subset of die-hard passengers are saying they would much prefer the opposite of that mammoth boat.

Picking an older, smaller cruise might make for less fancy travel, but it comes with obvious advantages. Lower demand for the aged vessels in cruise lines’ fleets can prompt some big-deal savings. Some of these ships sail more exotic itineraries, and passengers enjoy greater attention from crew members without feeling so crowded. A cruise ship can start to show its age at around 15 years.

“Each ship has its own personality,” says Mari Marks, a luxury-travel adviser with Protravel International in Beverly Hills, Calif. “Because not everybody is going to love being with over 5,000 of their new best friends.”

Royal Caribbean operates the six largest cruise ships in the world. The Icon is now the largest. It can hold more than 7,000 passengers and comes with everything from an ice-skating arena to six waterslides.

A well-traveled boat

A few years ago, cruise regular and Las Vegas resident David Di Vito went on his first cruise aboard the Oasis of the Seas, which was once the world’s largest cruise vessel. Since then he has sailed on multiple Royal Caribbean ships. His favorite is the less-heralded Vision of the Seas.

Vision of the Seas has been in service since 1998. Di Vito and his fiancée, Marina Vail, appreciated that they weren’t overwhelmed by crowds and could do the activities they wanted.

While the older vessel didn’t have the many niceties of the Oasis of the Seas, they enjoyed themselves. Di Vito liked grabbing a deck chair and watching the ocean. Vail peeled off for trivia games and scavenger hunts.

Fewer people also meant better service, Di Vito, a 34-year-old sound engineer, says. He recalls that the Wi-Fi was more reliable, guest services was more responsive and booking excursions at ports of call wasn’t a hassle.

Such trips are often also cheaper. A seven-night sailing on the Icon of the Seas started at around $2,536 a person on a recent search for an interior stateroom before applying discounts. A three-night cruise to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Fla., in early September on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas, which will have its maiden voyage in July, started at $827 a person for an interior cabin before discounts.

Meanwhile, a four-night cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, out of Tampa, Fla., on the Grandeur of the Seas, the cruise line’s oldest ship, around that same time started at $519 a person for an interior room before discounts.

Royal Caribbean didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The big get bigger

Other cruise companies have introduced gargantuan vessels in recent years. MSC Cruises entered the MSC World Europa into service in December 2022. The ship can hold more than 6,700 passengers and more than 2,100 crew members.

Carnival’s flagship, the Celebration, had its maiden voyage in late 2022. That ship has a maximum capacity above 6,500 passengers—and boasts the first roller coaster at sea.

“Larger ships offer more operational efficiencies, more revenue-generating opportunities and more space to offer a variety of accommodations, dining, entertainment and recreational features,” says Chris Chiames, chief communications officer for Carnival Cruise Line.

A cruise’s cost generally depends on factors including the length of the trip and demand for the itinerary, travel advisers say. But the ship’s age can also factor in.

Phil Perrey, a minister from St. Charles, Mo., says he and his wife wanted to sail on one of Royal Caribbean’s newer and larger ships. By the time they finished pricing it out, they realized they could pay at least $300 less to sail on the Celebrity Equinox, which first entered service nearly 15 years ago.

“And that’s for a higher-end cruise line,” Perrey says.

A ship pro tip

When booking cruises, Perrey takes an approach recommended by many travel advisers. Instead of looking at when a ship first sailed, he checks when it was last refurbished during what is known as a dry dock.

“A 10-year-old ship that hasn’t been through dry dock is going to feel older than a 20-year-old ship that got out of dry dock two years ago,” he says.

Carnival uses the dry-dock process to install features on its more-mature ships, such as the adult-only Serenity section, Chiames says. Three of its ships—the Sunshine, the Radiance and the Sunrise—were renamed following extensive renovations.

Older ships can come with drawbacks, even if they are recently renovated. They tend to have smaller rooms and fewer cabins with balconies, says Rob Clabbers, president of Q Cruise and Travel in Chicago.

Keeping older ships in a fleet enables cruise lines to serve a wider array of destinations. Newer megaships can be too big to dock in certain harbors, including Tahiti.

“We intentionally place our smaller ships in more exotic destinations with longer, port-intensive itineraries that offer a more immersive experience that our guests love,” says David Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Adam Carnevale, a small-business owner from Hickory, N.C., has sailed most often with Carnival. He and his wife regularly take advantage of offers they get since they frequent the casino.

Many of his cruises have been aboard the Carnival Sunshine. The ship sails out of Charleston, S.C., about four hours from home. They also appreciate the hometown vibe of the ship: They frequently recognize passengers and crew members from previous sailings.

Carnevale was less enthusiastic about a cruise he took out of Miami on the Celebration last summer. He says he found the food and service not up to the same level of quality as what he experienced on the Sunshine. He also wasn’t wowed by the ship’s many amenities, which he compared with an ice-cream cone overloaded with toppings.

“You don’t have to give me all the fancy stuff,” he says. “Sometimes vanilla is good.”

Royal caribbean vs. carnival: quick comparison chart.

Decide which line is best based on costs, food, onboard entertainment and other key factors.

Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have quite a bit in common.

Trying to choose between Royal Caribbean and Carnival for your next cruise? Check out the comparison chart below, then read on for more details.

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas side by side at sea.

Winner: Royal Caribbean

When it comes to fleet size as well as the features available on cruise ships, Royal Caribbean has an edge over Carnival Cruise Line. That's because Royal Caribbean already has 28 ships in operation, including its incredible Oasis Class, Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class ships. Oasis Class vessels like Allure of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are some of the largest in the world – and Royal Caribbean Group is constantly rolling out new, even bigger cruise ships with better amenities and new features. For example, the new Icon of the Seas (scheduled to debut in 2024) plans to have the largest water park at sea, the largest swimming pool at sea, and a range of over-the-top cabins and suites for families of all sizes.

Meanwhile, Carnival currently operates 25 different vessels with a few more on the way. Newer ships like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia aren't as large and grand as Royal Caribbean ships, nor are the brand-new vessels the company is planning for late 2023 and 2024. For example, the new Carnival Jubilee that is set to begin sailing later in 2023 will have 15 passenger decks and capacity for up to 6,631 guests, compared to 18 guest decks and 7,600 passengers on Icon of the Seas.

Comparing cabins across cruise lines as a whole isn't an easy feat, mostly because companies tend to offer larger suites and cabins with a better layout on their newer ships . You'll therefore likely have a nicer cabin on one of Carnival's newest vessels compared to an older ship from Royal Caribbean, and of course the opposite is also true. Cabin sizes and layouts also vary widely across the vessels of both brands, and that's true even for basic interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.

That said, Royal Caribbean still comes out ahead in this category, since the line boasts more square footage in some of the most basic cabins as well as more over-the-top luxury accommodations, especially for families.

As an example, most inside cabins on Allure of the Seas feature 172 square feet of space, whereas Carnival Celebration's inside cabins are slightly smaller at 158 square feet. Meanwhile, the largest suites on Celebration are the Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, with 1,120 square feet of space including the balcony, and the Carnival Excel Aft Suite, which has 861 square feet of interior and balcony space. Compare those options to the Sky Loft Suites on Allure of the Seas, which feature 1,132 square feet across the room and balcony, and the spacious two-bedroom AquaTheater Suites with 1,595 square feet including the balcony.

Food options vary widely across vessels within any cruise brand, and this is especially true with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. For example, older ships from both cruise lines offer fewer specialty dining options overall along with the main dining rooms and buffet options cruisers come to expect, whereas newer ships from both lines feature a lot more unique and innovative options.

When you view the cruise dining options from both lines, you'll quickly find that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean pull out all the stops when it comes to food. For example, Carnival ships include a range of eateries from large and expansive buffets to main dining rooms to unique offerings like Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina. Meanwhile, specialty dining on Carnival vessels features options like teppanyaki, Emeril's Bistros at Sea and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Royal Caribbean ships feature convenient buffets and main dining room experiences, as well as included options like pizza kitchens, noodle bars and casual fast food. Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean ranges from the brand's Chef's Table experience to Johnny Rockets' burgers and shakes to innovative fine dining at Wonderland.

Drink packages

A group of friends enjoying drinks at Lime and Coconut on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer drink packages that cruisers can purchase as part of their vacation to get a more all-inclusive feel . Then again, the value of these packages depends on how much you drink over the course of your trip. Also note that the cost of drink packages across all cruise lines can vary depending on the ship, itinerary, travel dates, length of trip and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out slightly ahead in this category because the line offers three tiers of drink packages for guests with different needs. Choose from the Classic Soda Package; the Refreshment Package, which includes soda along with coffees, juices and even milkshakes at Johnny Rockets; and the Deluxe Beverage Package, which adds in beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Meanwhile, Carnival offers just two different drink packages: the Bottomless Bubbles package, which covers soft drinks and juice, and the Cheers! drink package, which adds in spirits and cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, specialty coffee, energy drinks and more.

Onboard activities

A waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Analyzing onboard activities across cruise lines isn't always easy – you really have to break down this category by ship for a true comparison. When you do that with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you'll find that both lines offer fun activities for all ages, from onboard water parks to hosted games, casinos and more.

That said, Royal Caribbean does take things up a notch in this category, especially on the line's newer ships. Some Royal Caribbean vessels offer escape rooms, surf simulators, zip lines, game shows and over-the-top water parks with incredible slides for thrill-seekers. For example, Freedom of the Seas boasts huge onboard waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, mini-golf and more. Don't forget about Icon of the Seas with its massive water park and pool offerings in the works. Meanwhile, standout activities on Carnival ships include Family Feud Live, onboard water parks and the thrilling SkyRide.

Live entertainment

The quality of cruise ship entertainment varies widely based on the quality of the talent booked for individual ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer their share of live music and entertainment, including performances by bands and singers, karaoke, and piano bars. Meanwhile, both lines also boast their own theaters on every vessel, which often feature Broadway-style shows, singing and dancing, comedy acts, and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out ahead in this category since its vessels feature award-winning musicals like "Hairspray," "Mamma Mia!" and "Cats." The open-air AquaTheater on Oasis Class ships also wows guests with incredible diving feats, stunts and aerial acrobatics. Some Royal Caribbean ships even have onboard ice skating performances and ice games.

Kids programming

Winner: Carnival

Both cruise lines have kids clubs that cater to younger guests of all ages, with each one offering supervised care so parents can drop the kids off for some alone time or a quiet dinner on the ship. However, Carnival stands out slightly in this category due to the six different clubs offered across the fleet for children and teens between 6 months and 17 years old. Carnival also offers supervised Night Owls services for kids 11 and younger, which lets parents get out and have some late-night fun for an extra charge.

Royal Caribbean offers four kids clubs for children ages six months to 12, along with a separate club for tweens and teens . Supervised child care is available for free during the day, and you can opt for paid care after hours as well.

Adults-only offerings

A group of adults drinking and laughing at the Serenity Retreat on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras.

Both cruise lines offer their share of adults-only spaces and things to do, from onboard casinos to luxurious spas to bars that offer cocktails and live entertainment at all hours of the day and night. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer adults-only areas on some of their ships.

On Carnival, for example, cruisers will find the Serenity Adults-Only Retreat for sailors 21 and older with extra space and comfortable chairs for relaxation, along with its own bar nearby. On many Royal Caribbean vessels, on the other hand, the onboard Solarium for ages 16-plus has its own pool and extra space to find peace and quiet.

Carnival's Serenity relaxation area is included for guests. While Royal Caribbean's Solarium is typically also included, on certain sailings there is restricted access by fare class.

Shore excursions

Shore excursions offered by cruise lines are largely operated by third-party companies and are often the same across brands. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean boast a broad selection of excursions in destinations around the world, from snorkeling and scuba tours in the Caribbean to city tours, horseback riding, cooking classes and more.

Both cruise lines offer private and custom tours you can book through your ship as well.

Private island experiences

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival each have their own private island in the Bahamas , which is included in most itineraries to this part of the world. These private islands provide a fun beach escape for families to enjoy, whether you want to relax in the sun or take part in some of the available activities.

Royal Caribbean's private island, called Perfect Day at CocoCay, is the more impressive option due to everything it includes: a heart-thumping water park, its own wave pool, a zip line, a hot air balloon experience and overwater bungalows you can book for the day, among other offerings. Meanwhile, Carnival's Half Moon Cay has a unique beached pirate ship to explore – but fewer amenities overall.

Note that both private islands have plenty of beach space for guests to spread out and relax, as well as restaurants and bars. You can also book excursions on both private islands, which include activities like snorkeling and water sports.

Comparing costs across cruise lines can be tricky since fares and available sales vary throughout the year, as well as based on the vessel booked, the cruise itinerary, the number and age of travelers, and more. To get an idea of who wins on price, we looked for two similar cruises on comparable ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, then priced out an option for a family of four with two children ages 8 and 10. For the purpose of this comparison, we used seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises on Carnival Celebration and Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, both of which began sailing in 2022.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary from Miami stops in Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands . By comparison, the Wonder of the Seas sailing leaves from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten ; San Juan; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

The chart below shows the total cost (including taxes and fees) for a family of four in January 2024 in both an ocean view and a typical balcony cabin across both cruise lines. Note that, for the purpose of this comparison, we selected the least expensive room option in each category.

As a result of the 2020-2021 cruise industry shutdown, Carnival Cruise Line sold off five Fantasy-class ships. Parent company Carnival Corporation sold off 21 cruise ships in total.

Three were sold for scrap metal, including  Carnival Fantasy ,  Carnival Imagination , and  Carnival Inspiration . Carnival Fascination  was sold to another cruise line that never got off the ground, and it was eventually scrapped in December 2021.

In 2022, it was announced that Carnival Sensation and Carnival Ecstasy would also be leaving the fleet.

What does gross registered tonnage mean?

Gross registered tonnage (GRT) doesn’t measure how much the cruise ship weighs but the total space inside. Every 100 cubic feet is equivalent to one gross registered ton.

Do all Carnival ships have Starlink internet?

By 2024, all Carnival Cruise Line ships will have Starlink wireless internet service.

This article was originally published in January 2022. It was most recently updated in December 2023.

Use recent weakness in cruise stocks as an opportunity.

At the moment, the top three cruise stocks are all oversold after a recent pullback. But that won’t be the case much longer with most already starting to pivot higher. Even the travel exchange-traded fund (ETF), the Defiance Hotel, Airline, and Cruise ETF (NYSEARCA: CRUZ ) is oversold and ready to pivot higher. Better, not only does the ETF offer you exposure to leading cruise stocks, like Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL ) and Carnival (NYSE: CCL ), but it also diversifies with leading hotel and airline stocks .

In fact, I’d also use weakness in the CRUZ ETF as an opportunity. Last trading at $21.38, I’d like to see it initially retest $23 a share immediate term.

Or, if you’d rather just stick with some of the top, oversold individual cruise stocks, here are three top ones you may want to consider buying immediately. Most won’t stay this oversold for long.

Royal Caribbean ( RCL )

After testing $140.58, Royal Caribbean pulled back to support at its 50-day moving average. Even better, RSI, MACD, and Williams’ %R are all starting to pivot from over-extensions into oversold territory, as well. Last trading at $129.21, I’d like to see RCL initially retest prior resistance at $140.58 immediate term.

Helping, analysts at Mizuho just initiated a buy rating on the RCL stock , with a price target of $164. “The firm says the company should be able to drive incremental demand through the expansion of existing destinations, the development of new attractions, as well as differentiated ships,” according to TheFly.com .

Barclays’ analysts also raised their price target on RCL to $154 with an overweight rating ahead of the company’s earnings call on April 25. The firm expects to see positive demand and yield updates when RCL reports its earnings later this month. Goldman Sachs even added RCL to its Conviction List as part of the firm’s “U.S. Conviction List – Directors’ Cut.”

Carnival ( CCL )

Carnival is also attractive on its latest pullback to $14.12 after testing a high of $17.68. It’s also over-extended on RSI, MACD, and Williams’ %R and is starting to slowly pivot higher. From its last traded price of $14.12, I’d like to see it initially retest $17.68 and potentially test $19.50.

Analysts at. Tigress Financial just raised their price target on CCL to $25 , with a buy rating. All thanks to record booking trends driven by strong consumer demand for cruising. Even Barron’s recently noted that CCL’s recent pullback is an opportunity worth buying. JPMorgan also raised its price target to $23 with an overweight rating on the stock.

Barclays raised its price target to $25 with an overweight rating, noting “The company’s Q1 results were ‘solid’, with ‘particularly bullish’ pricing commentary and forward commentary on bookings/demand momentum that showed no discernible cracks,” as noted by TheFly.com .

Much like RCL, CCL should have plenty of smooth sailing ahead.

Norwegian Cruise Line ( NCLH )

Even the pullback in Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE: NCLH ) is attractive.

After testing a high of about $21.50, it dipped to $17, where it became oversold on RSI, MACD, and Williams’ %R, as well. Much like RCL and CCL, NCLH is also starting to pivot higher. From its current price of $18.29, I’d like to see it retest $21.50 initially.

Even more attractive, the company just ordered eight new ships, which is the biggest order in company history. “We expect these strategic investments will secure our growth trajectory, significantly boost our earnings profile, and enhance shareholder value well into the future,”  added Chief Financial Officer Mark Kempa .

With earnings, for fiscal year 2023, the company posted a 32% jump in revenue, as compared to 2019. Revenue per passenger cruise day was up 17% from 2019. In addition, advance ticket sales at the close of 2023 were up 56% from 2019 to $3.2 billion. All of those numbers are only expected to increase from here, with much stronger demand.
