If you’re planning a vacation to Branson, Missouri, you’ll want to make time for the Top of the Rock Branson Cave tour! This top Branson attraction is an experience that all ages will love and one of our favorite family attractions while on our recent visit to Branson, MO.

Our family had not visited Branson in years, so when we were planning a trip for my parent’s 63rd wedding anniversary, I knew I needed to find activities that everyone would enjoy.

After researching the best things to do in Branson, MO, I found Johnny Morris’ Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve .

Top of the Rock Branson Missouri

Top Of The Rock Branson

What is Top of the Rock? You might think that it’s a drive to the top of a mountain where you will see views for miles.

But, it’s actually a 2 1/2 mile golf cart tour along the Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail featuring beautiful views of Table Rock Lake, waterfalls, and a bar in a cave!

Golf Cart Cave Tour Top Of The Rock Branson

We visited in early June. I purchased tickets online a few months earlier, so I could reserve the earliest time available to avoid crowds for my parents.

While this saved us time when arriving, I did see many people just walking in to purchase their tickets.

Excited to start our cave tour on our golf cart, we were the first to arrive that day!

Note: When you enter the park, there is a $10 per car fee payable by credit card only.

Parking the car was easy so early in the morning, and we were happy my parents didn’t have to walk too far to get to the Welcome Center.

Branson Top of the Rock Welcome Center

We quickly learned, however, that we would have to wait for our tour to start.

When we walked into the Welcome Center to check-in, we were informed that a tree had fallen along the path and needed to be cleared away. Plus, some repairs needed to be made in the cave.

The guest services person explained that they hoped to get the pathway cleared in the next hour.

Since the ticket for Lost Canyon Cave also includes admittance to the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum, she suggested taking the free shuttle from the Welcome Center to the museum to pass the time.

Gift Shop at Top of the Rock Branson

We decided to stay and browsed the gift shop while we waited. After about a 2-hour wait, they announced that the path was open, and we could line up for our golf cart.

What To Expect On The Lost Canyon Cave Golf Cart Tour

Entrance to Cave Trail Branson MO

If you have pre-purchased your ticket online, you can follow the signs in the Welcome Center to go outside to line up for the golf cart tour.

Either pre-print your tickets; or, as I did, add the tickets to your Apple Wallet.

Having them in my Apple Wallet made it very easy for the attendants to scan all four of our tickets, and I didn’t have to print them out and carry them with me.

Drivers are required to be 18 years old and have signed a waiver. If you haven’t signed the driver waiver before you arrive, the agent will text or email you a link to review and sign on your smartphone.

Electric carts Top of the Rock Cave Tour

The electric carts are available as either a two-seat or four seats depending on the number of people in your party. If it’s raining, the golf cart has a roof; or, the roof can be rolled back for better viewing!

Pay attention to the screen in the golf cart too! As you drive along, the screen changes telling you about the rock formations, bats, squirrels, and the most important thing – what drinks are available in the Bat Bar!

How Long Does The Top of the Rock Tour Take?

The two-and-a-half-mile golf cart tour takes approximately 50 minutes. Time spent on the trail depends on whether you stop the cart at the designated pull-offs to take in the views, take photos, or just continue driving along the path.

There are quite a few pull-offs with great photo ops. Routes are perfectly planned for parking the cart and viewing areas.

Waterfall at Top of the Rock Branson

We stopped at several areas to get out and look at the views but not all. Our entire tour took about an hour.

What Will You See Driving The Top of the Rock Cave & Nature Trail

One thing we realized is if you don’t pay attention, you will miss a lot! Don’t miss all the details in the fencing. They are perfectly placed and very intricate.

cave tour at top of the rock

The tour begins at the top of the waterfall. As you make your way along the path, you will be in front of 2-3 waterfalls merging into one. Then, finally, you are at the bottom where they all come together.

We also enjoyed all the covered bridges. And be sure to Look Down when they tell you to!

cave tour at top of the rock

Of course, one of the highlights of the tour was the Bat Bar Cave. The drink menu is listed on the screen in your golf cart and is also posted in huge letters on the wall as you pull into the cave.

cave tour at top of the rock

Their specialty drink is the Bat’s Bite Lemonade. The drink sounded interesting, but it was still early in the day for us, so we opted for bottled water and a diet coke.

Once you have your drink, you will continue through the cave where we were surprised to see another awesome waterfall.

There are signs all along the pathway where you might need to Swing Wide – be sure to pay attention or you might hit some rocks!

Waterfalls At Top Of The Rock Branson

One of the most fun parts of the cart tour was driving right next to the waterfall!

cave tour at top of the rock

There are quite a few waterfalls to enjoy during the cave tour at Top of the Rock.

I also recommend stopping at the overlook where you can see beautiful views of Table Rock Lake in the distance.

Top of the Rock Golf Cart Tour Prices

Top of the Rock has what’s called Dynamic Pricing. The ticket price you pay today may not be the price of the ticket tomorrow. It all depends on the time of year and demand.

I had never heard of this type of pricing for an attraction, but it came up as people were asking for a refund for the tour being closed for repairs. Some were planning to return the next day, but the agent explained that they could not guarantee the ticket price would be the same as what they paid that day.

i love what i saw! we r coming to branson, missouri in november. dates are not sure yet. This would be a good spot to go to. Thank you!!!!!!!!

I am ALSO heading back to Branson in November and plan to go back to Top of the Rock! I can’t wait to see what it’s like in the fall. Have fun!

Thank you for your very complete review.oved the sense of humor you added.

We will be in Branson the weekend of the April 21. How do I go about purchasing tickets for the golf cart ride through the cave and is there a lot of walking from the parking lot to get to the golf carts?

Hi Michelle! Sorry I didn’t see this! Go to the website and purchase your tickets! The parking lot is just outside the entrance to Top of the Rock. Remember there is also a per car fee to enter the park. My parents loved it so much we went two times within a couple of months! If you want to take a chance, you CAN purchase your ticket at the door. Hope this helps and have fun!!

How long does it take to get through the cave? Asking for a claustrophobic friend!

Hi Annette! I am so claustrophobic but didn’t even notice I was in a cave! There is so much to look at! You start the cave tour by driving up to the bar. Get a cold soda, water, or other beverage. Then you will see a very tall waterfall! I was busy taking photos as we were driving through (and trying not to get wet!) but didn’t feel I was in a cave at all! I hope you can go to Top of the Rock – it’s a one-of-a-kind experience!

How long are you in the actual cave? Do you go long periods without seeing sky?? My claustrophobia is wondering- lol!

Was another one of my bucket list places. This place is beautiful and beyond. I went mainly just to see it and do some photography. Glad I did. A must see while in Branson.

cave tour at top of the rock

This was my second visit to Top of the Rock. My mother and I stayed at Big Cedar Lodge and I am so grateful that Top of the Rock accessibility was included in our stay. We spent back to back evenings at Top of the Rock. The first night we sat at the Buffalo bar patio for the bagpipe ceremony. Very neat experience, beautiful sunset, and the food was excellent. You have to try their spinach dip! The second night, we visited the cellar wine bar. I was a little surprised there wasn't more going on with the set up there. It would be nice if they offered some kind of wine sampler/tasting. We ate at Osage restaurant afterward and enjoyed all of our food. Wait staff all around at Top of the Rock does a great job. Make reservations before your trip!

We did not play golf, but did rent a golf cart and did the nature trail and cave. We had a wonderful time in this beautiful setting. Free shuttle to Top of the Rock but we didn’t get to go to Arnies or the chapel as they were sitting up for a wedding. We will visit again

I will say the price point of this almost had us not going (not cheap what so ever) but in the end it was a fun time. It’s $10 to get in but you get $5 back in voucher form then $30 per adult. Our LO was a baby so he wasn’t charged. We also did the museum tour which was INSANELY large. Bring your walking shoes.

I could write a massive essay about this place, but I won't. If you dont appreciate nature, water falls, beautiful and breathtaking views... then go someplace else. The golf course is so well groomed it is immaculate. They offer golf cart tours, not a guided tour from a talking head. They offer private event venues, beautiful church to have your special day in your life. This place is beyond explanation. YOU MUST GO HERE. If not you are missing out on something spectacular.

What is the total cost for the tour including the cart?

It's about $40 a person to rent a golf cart and tour the grounds. The cave bar is extra and they take cards.

Is this only a tour or can I freely walk here with my family?

The tour is self conducted. You drive/ride in a rented golf cart along the couple of miles of paths that wander through the lost cavern and other unique waterfalls along the way. Very relaxing and you can take as long as you want while touring. No… more

We visited this place on 11/19/2023. It was so much better than expected! We had the greatest time! The weather was chilly and rainy so the carts were covered. Here's a hint: Arrive at 3:50 PM so you only pay $10 for the parking instead of $15. We stood in line for about 20 minutes before we could get a cart which put our start around 4:20 pm. By the time you actually pass the cave, the sun is starting to set so you get the Christmas Lights! It was wonderful! It definitely put my in the Christmas Spirit!

This is one of the things that we wanted to do on this trip to Branson. We had never heard of it but found it on a YouTube video. You drive up to the entrance of this attraction and then rent a golf cart to travel along the road. The staff was very friendly, but it was a little pricey. It was a nice ride through trees, past rock formations, and waterfalls. You can stop anywhere along the road to get out and take pictures. It crosses over bridges and streams on your way to the cavern. Our only disappointment was that the cavern was small as far as the drive-through. There is a little drive-up bar where you can order drinks. They had one non-alcoholic beverage; I believe it was peach strawberry lemonade-- a small can was $8; we said thanks, but no thanks. We made a few stops, so the ride was a little over an hour. It would have been pretty at twilight. They have these artificial animals along the trail that were lighted, and that would have been nice to see. I would highly recommend the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail.

This was a very fun activity for my mom and I to do while dad was off golfing. There were a decent amount of people on the tour but there's so much room that I never felt over crowded. The carts also don't go very fast so most people were going at a similar place. There was a ton of great scenery and spots to take some pictures. The rocks are just beautiful and all the caves and waterfalls were so fun. Driving through the cave and stopping for a exclusive beverage was so fun, even if it was only 10am... ha! It is pretty pricey but I'd say it's worth it for the time and the views you get out of it.

I didn't enjoy it. The marketing photos make ot look amazing. Total man-made tourist trap. It starts at the front gate, you have to pay for parking. Just another money grab. It's in the country, so it's not like you can walk there. That's annoying. They herd you through like livestock. The golf cart paths aren't wide enough to pass, so you have to stop every time the person in front of you stops to take a pic of every bird and squirrel. It's all man made. You're at the highest point around....where is all this water coming from for all these waterfalls? Pipes in the ground. While the rocks are real, the cave and water features are not natural. The scenic overlook is the only highlight of the trip, otherwise I would have given this one star. Shame on bass pro shops.

Every time we come to Branson we make sure we stop here to do the cart tour and have a late lunch. The tour is fabulous! If you traverse the course at a brisk pace the entire run would take you a half hour. However most folks including myself do it at a very reduced speed.we normally take over an hour. The carts are in great shape and we'll maintained. On a sunny day the tops are rolled open and this not only allows you to get some sun but it also allows to look at the surrounding soaring beauty of this trail. Waterfalls abound no less than 7 can be enjoyed. The rock formations are beautiful as you curve through the park. We enjoy the Bat cave and even though the drinks are a little steep we always pickup one from the Bat Bar. The covered bridges will enthrall you as you cross through them. After you complete the course you take a 5 min ride (via shuttle bus) up to the museum and golf course. Naturally, there is a large gift shop and a well stocked Pro Shop. The museum is priceless and the artifacts are amazing. This is the creation of Johnny Norris and a tribute to the Native American Indians that lived here and across our country. The museum is underground, carved out of rock and it is roughly 40,000sf. This portion of your visit should not be passed by without walking through. After surfacing you can go to the restaurant for a real nice meal. If the weather is good ask for a table out on the porch. The view runs from TRL up through the forest while overlooking the golf course. After you place your order the staff will bring out there own Tortilla Chips and what I consider the best Salsa I've ever had. Try not to load up with too many because dinner will be plentiful. We enjoy the SW Burger cooked to perfection with Pepper Jack Cheese, a smear of Guacamole, and grilled Jalapeño. The fries are one of the best I've ever had. Bottom line.... Take you time and enjoy every minute. This is a must do if in the area!

The experience at Top of the Rock is so special. Taking the golf cart drive through the Lost Canyon, the cave, and surrounding grounds made for a delightful day's adventure. We took a tour of the excellent museum afterwards and were amazed at the extensive collection of Native American artifacts and historical collections. It was one of the best museums we have ever visited. It was 10.00 dollars to enter the venue and around 40.00 dollars a person for the golf cart tour. The museum was free. Given the cost of other shows and activities in the area, the cost seemed comparable. Our kids spent the day at Silver Dollar City and Top of the Rock was a perfect way for us parents to relax and enjoy something more leisurely. We asked if we could walk on the trail but all are required to use the golf carts. We did walk to and from the museum but they offer a free shuttle for those who prefer that.

This was one of the most unique experiences I have ever done on vacation, driving through a canyon on a golf cart. Beautiful waterfalls and rock formations around every turn. Amazing views especially since you were allowed to park the golf cart in several areas along the trail and take pictures. It was a very romantic and scenic trip through the canyon. We also stopped at the Bat Bar inside the cave for a drink, which was so nice! I wish they allowed you to stop at the bar for longer but I understand why they don't, you are driving a golf cart. I will be back especially during the Christmas season when they put up lights.

This is a must do for the area. However it is expensive and only a do once type of thing. We paid $37.50 per person in advance. The longer you wait to buy tickets the more expensive they are so get them as soon as you know you want to go. We had NO Wait at 1:00pm and walked right on to the golf cart. The trail is full of some of the best photo taking opportunities in the area. I flew my drone all over the place capturing waterfalls and beautiful pictures. The cave is small but awesome as you drive through it in the cart you come to a bar that serves drinks. A little pricey but how often do you get the chance to drink in a cave? Nice bridges to drive over and beautiful landscapes make this worth the money. But I would only need to do it once and then move on.

Top of the Rock is an all day activity fyi. What a fantastic find in Southern Missouri. Self guided golf cart tour that goes through nature and a cave with a bar in it. Yes that's right a bar and they do have none alcoholic drinks and jerky to purchase. Such a fun unique day, we spent all day on Top of the Rock lol. Don't miss this beautiful place and if it's raining they have golf cart covers with windows and it was perfect. Definitely a must stop if you are in the area.

The golf cart tour was lots of fun! Beautiful views in a great atmosphere. Every staff member is so friendly, engaging and helpful. The museum was interesting, the Mexican food was adequate if overpriced (certainly not the quality you'd expect for the price) but the restaurant was beautiful with awesome views. but the highlight of the day is the golf cart tour.

Lost canyon cave.

A cave tour, incredible views and a round of golf? If you visit Lost Canyon Cave you'll find more than just the cave itself on offer.

by Sony Hocklander

Lost Canyon Cave tour aerial photo

Travel Time 55 miles south of Springfield

Tough Stuff The cave is accessible only as part of a guided 2.5-mile nature walk with multiple up and downhill sections, or part of an electric golf cart tour.

Itinerary Stop for drink refreshments at the Bat Bar inside Lost Canyon Cave and spend time at Top of the Rock for dining, golf and sunset-viewing.

Don’t Miss Visitors enjoy seeing nine waterfalls on the Lost Canyon Cave tour trail, including one inside the cave.

How about a round of golf with your cave experience? Or perhaps you’d enjoy a nice meal afterward. Then top it off with a stroll out to the Chapel of the Ozarks for an incredible view of Table Rock Lake and gorgeous sunsets from the highest point in Taney County .

All that and more is found at Lost Canyon Cave , part of a rich complex of things to do at Top of the Rock, one of Johnny Morris’ nature-centric properties that includes outdoor attractions and resort accommodations, such as nearby Big Cedar Lodge .

To see the cave, book a Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail self-guided golf cart tour or request a guided nature walk on the 2.5-mile paved trail that includes beautiful views, interesting rock formations, multiple photo-worthy waterfalls and of course, Lost Canyon Cave. The cart tours, which can accommodate four, include entrance to the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum . They are first come first serve but you can book tickets online. The trail takes roughly 40 minutes—or longer if you stop for lots of photos or linger over a view. Reservations are required to walk the trail with a guide who shares information about nature, history and geology over 1.5 hours.

Aerial photo of Lost Canyon Cave in Branson MO

Both options take you through the four-story Lost Canyon Cave where the highlight is an impressive waterfall and beautifully lit limestone formations. Years ago, Morris went spelunking in the cave he eventually acquired along with the surrounding land. Working around the natural landscape, his team carved out the nature trail and cave experience. Part of that experience includes the Bat Bar inside the cave, which sells cocktails, beer, soft drinks, water and light snack options.

Speaking of caves (or perhaps potential caves), a trip to Top of the Rock isn’t complete without viewing what’s now called the Cathedral of Nature, the result of an unexpected sinkhole that opened in May 2015. Ever since, Morris and his team have been excavating the site to reveal incredible towering geological formations more than 300 million years old as they seek a connection to what could be a vast cave system. To date, crews have removed more than 1.6 million yards of earth and 108,000 loads of dirt and rocks according to Top of the Rock. The sinkhole, which was 70 feet wide by 100 feet long to start, is now 350 feet wide and 600 feet long, and it’s grown from 40 feet to 200 feet deep.

Will a cavern be revealed? If so, cave tour experiences around the Ozarks could expand yet again.

10 Amazing Caves & Rock Formations To Explore Around The Grand Canyon

  • The Grand Canyon is home to numerous unique rock formations that are worth exploring, such as Duck On A Rock, Tower Of Set, and Zoroaster Temple.
  • Some of these formations have religious or historical namesakes, like the Tower of Set, which resembles iconic temples of Egypt.
  • While some formations are easily accessible and suitable for all visitors, others, like the Royal Arch, require advanced hiking skills and careful planning.

Mather Point is the iconic view of the Grand Canyon that visitors first see when they enter the park. The red rock covered in sage green brush is truly one of the most magnificent sights in the country. But what should tourists look for after they've seen this iconic and oft-photographed site? Across this 278-mile park, there are hundreds of other unique rock formations to see, each more exquisite than the last. It can be difficult to know where to begin; there are so many great spots to explore in the Grand Canyon area .

With five million years of natural wonder, the Grand Canyon is a hotspot for unique rock formations. Learn about the coolest geological formations and caves in and around the park. Visitors will have a blast hiking around the Grand Canyon in search of these breathtaking rock formations.

Duck On A Rock

One of the most well-known rock formations in the Grand Canyon is Duck On A Rock, located east of Yaki Point. To be fair, this formation doesn't seem to resemble a duck in the slightest; apparently, at one point, it did.

How did such a change happen? The erosion and weathering that made the Grand Canyon in the first place have, over time, worn away parts of this formation.

  • Accessibility level: easy, close to historical information and parking, wheelchair accessible

Tower Of Set

The Tower of Set is a butte located along the Tonto Trail. Named after the famous Ancient Egyptian war deity, Set, this rock formation is said to resemble some of the most iconic temples of Egypt .

Nearby are some other distinct rock formations, all named after Egyptian deities. Some of these include the Horus Temple, the Osiris Temple, the Tower of Ra, and the Isis Temple.

  • Accessibility level: contains parking, viewable from portions of the 70-mile Tonto trail (split up into smaller sections)

Zoroaster Temple

Towering high in the bright blue sky of Arizona is the rock formation known as Zoroaster Temple. Like the Tower of Set, this summit also has a religious namesake; this time, it is named after the ancient Iranian spiritual leader and philosopher.

The prominence of this peak is 763 feet. It is viewable from the South Kaibab Trail , which is 7.1 miles and can be quite steep, meaning this trek is better for advanced hikers.

  • Accessibility level: viewable from the South Kaibab Trail (7.1 miles), which requires more advanced hiking skills

Horseshoe Mesa

This rock formation gets its name from the horseshoe shape that it takes. This formation is made of beautiful Redwall Limestone, with cliffs stretching into the sky covered in green brush.

This mesa is accessible through the Grandview Trail. The mesa is situated three miles into the 12-mile-long trail. The Grandview Trail can be quite steep, but many sections of it are paved with cobblestones.

  • Accessibility level: accessible from the Grandview Trail (12 miles long), which is steep but often paved with cobblestones

Hermit Canyon

Hermit Canyon is a 6-mile-long canyon located in the western part of the Grand Canyon. Named after the 19th-century prospector Louis Boucher, who moved to the area in search of silver and gold, this area is famous as being the area of Boucher's camp.

Known as "the Hermit," Boucher became the namesake of several trails, geological features, and a creek in this area. It is accessible through the Hermit Trail , which is 8.9 miles long. This is considered to be one for experienced hikers only and does not have parking during the day.

  • Accessibility level: for experienced hikers only, no parking during the day, no water filling stations

Rampart Cave

One of the most important archeological discoveries in the Grand Canyon was in Rampart Cave . This cave, whose location in the park remains undisclosed, is known for its many fossil deposits. One of the most surprising types of fossils found here is that of fossilized poop!

Specifically, this fossilized dung comes from the Shasta ground sloth, a giant sloth the size of a bear whose heyday was in the Pleistocene from around 2.6 million years ago until 11,000 BCE.

Archeologists and paleobiologists believe that this sloth was vital in dispersing the seeds of the still-extant Joshua Tree, currently visible on one of California's top scenic attractions (where visitors can drive) .

For the time being, none of the caves in the Grand Canyon itself are accessible to the general population due to the preservation of archeological finds and modern vandalism by tourists. However, visitors can still learn about the geology of these caves and can appreciate them from afar.

  • Accessibility level: not accessible to tourists as of 2023

None of the caves in the Grand Canyon are currently accessible to tourists due to archeology and vandalism.

Vulcan's Throne And Lava Falls

Out of all the rock formations in the Grand Canyon, none look quite like Vulcan's Throne and the nearby Lava Falls. This landmark, located along the North Rim of the canyon, is actually a volcano!

As it is a cinder cone volcano, Vulcan's Throne stands in a tower of gray maroon in the shape of a cone. As one can guess, the nearby Lava Falls originated here.

After its latest eruption, which was about 73,000 years ago, the volcano created a series of rapids in the Colorado River, which are called the Lava Falls Rapids today.

  • Accessibility level: only a short hike from the Toroweap Overlook, which is accessible by car

Grand Canyon Caverns

Even though travelers can't access the caves within the Grand Canyon National Park itself, one great alternative is to visit Grand Canyon Caverns . Although the names are similar, this cave is not actually located within the park but instead is located nearby in Peach Springs, Arizona.

This cave, stretching down 300 feet, is a dry cave, meaning that there are few if any stalagmites and stalactites. The local town, Peach Springs, is also considered by some to be the inspiration for the Disney-Pixar movie, Cars, and is absolutely worth exploring.

  • Accessibility level: easily accessible via a local tour

The Royal Arch

One of the most difficult hiking trails in the Grand Canyon leads to a beautiful rock formation known as the Royal Arch. The Arch, as the name suggests, is made up of an arch of stone above a chasm known as Elves Chasm.

Accessible from the Royal Arch Loop, this is truly a stunning rock formation. This trail, however, is not for the faint of heart: this 31.4-mile trail typically takes five or more days to complete and requires careful planning. However, this is perfect for backpackers, those who wish to camp, serious hikers, and climbers!

  • Accessibility level: very difficult, accessible from the Royal Arch Loop (31.5 miles)

Related: These Are The Most Dangerous Hikes In The U.S. (Not For Novice Hikers)

Angel's Window

Just a short walk from the easily-accessible Cape Royal Trail is a geologic formation that will take travelers' breath away. Angel's Window is a natural arch that happens to form an almost rectangular shape, making it look like a window fit for the angels. Surrounded by the red walls and green pines of the Grand Canyon, this area is best enjoyed in the dusty hours before sunrise and at sunset.

  • Accessibility level: easily accessible from the 0.5-mile one-way Cape Royal Trail, wheelchair accessible

Whether a tourist is looking for historical landmarks, undertaking a treacherous backpacking route, or just there to marvel at the sprawling views, the Grand Canyon has something for everyone to see. Visitors should be sure to look for these feats of geology next time they're at the Grand Canyon National Park!

Top of the Rock

The vision of top of the rock, admiring and caring for the natural landscape.

Located on a bluff overlooking the Ozark Mountains and Table Rock Lake, Top of the Rock preserves Missouri’s rich history and intrinsic beauty. Top of the Rock features world-class activities and attractions, including Top of the Rock Golf Course, Top of the Rock Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail, and the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum.

As a young man, Johnny Morris, founder of Big Cedar Lodge and Bass Pro Shops, spent time spelunking in a vast cave, hunting for mushrooms. Years later, as part of his goal to sustain and share the history of the Ozarks, he acquired the land, working with a team of craftsmen to unearth what we now cherish as Top of the Rock—using the natural landscape as a guide.

Bass Pro Shops believes that caring for the land and the water that surrounds, breeds a fierce desire to sustain it. It’s this belief that has guided Johnny Morris to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exists at Top of the Rock today.

Top of the Rock is proudly part of the Johnny Morris Foundation - a non-profit comprised of three world-class conservation attractions. Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Jon Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., in 2013.

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Jon Bon Jovi was interviewed for Thank You, Goodnight .

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in Thank You, Goodnight Disney/Hulu hide caption

Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in Thank You, Goodnight

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Alec John Such, a founding member of Bon Jovi, dies at 70

Alec John Such, a founding member of Bon Jovi, dies at 70

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

The audio and digital versions of this story were edited by Jennifer Vanasco .
