award

Pride Month at Sea

Each June, Celebrity Cruises ® hosts our annual Pride Party at Sea. Every ship takes part in the celebration that brings our crew and guests together to honor and celebrate Pride.

Same Sex Weddings

Celebrity Cruises ® is proud to offer legal same-sex marriages on board. The motion follows a transformative vote in Malta, where a majority of the Celebrity fleet is registered, which passed the country’s parliament 66-1. The long-awaited referendum opens the door for Celebrity to legally recognize same-sex marriages performed on board, and have the fleet’s captains officiate the ceremonies.

First Legal Same Sex Marriage at Sea

In a historic ceremony hosted on board Celebrity Equinox ℠ in January 2018, Francisco Vargas and Benjamin Gray became the first same-sex couple ever to be legally married at sea on a major cruise line.

LGBTQ+ Events Onboard

Our popular LGBTQ+ Welcome Parties are open to all guests fleetwide and take place on the first night of almost every cruise. This event is a great ice breaker and opportunity for people to meet. In addition to the Welcome Party, Celebrity also hosts various LGBTQ+ events and social hours onboard.

Celebrity Cruises delivers relaxed luxury in an LGBTQ+ welcoming environment on their new ship BEYOND

Written by Michael Westman | June 6, 2022 | Travel

celebrity cruises gay friendly

Not sure cruising is for you? Might not feel comfortable on a cruise unless it is an all-LGBTQ+ voyage? Well, Celebrity Cruises may just have you rethinking all of that! After sailing on the newest ship in the Celebrity fleet, the 140,600-ton Celebrity Beyond, I will quote the words of a passenger who was asked if they were converted to cruising? The response was, “No. I’m converted to cruising on Celebrity.” The new Celebrity Beyond , the third ship in their Edge Series, is aptly named for a reason, it is simply … BEYOND. This ship (whose godmother is Simone Biles, 19-time World Champion Gymnast and seven-time Olympic Medalist) was built with more attention to detail than any other in the fleet – longer and taller, with wellness and relaxed luxury at its core. Kelly Hoppen’s exquisite style “changed how cruise ships are designed,” says Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO of Celebrity.

Once on board, you enter the Grand Plaza with its Martini Bar. “We built this space to be reminiscent of a European piazza – with live DJs, specialty restaurants, bars and lots of energy,” proudly reveals Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations Brian Abel. The chandelier show must be seen to be believed. Beyond lives up to its name in accommodations, destinations, design, culinary delights, and wellness. From two-story villas with their own outdoor jacuzzi, to world renowned Chef Daniel Boulud’s only restaurant at sea – Le Voyage , with over 400+ bottles of wine in their collection, to the theater’s 112-foot LED panels, this ship blends technology and innovation.

Adjacent to the rooftop garden with two cantilevered plunge pools, sits the Sunset Bar – a Moroccan inspired multi-level bar on Deck 15 of Beyond, designed by Nate Berkus . The attention to detail is noticeable and appreciated – giving the same relaxed luxury vibe … from the furniture, plantings, barware – and of course the incredible view from the stern of the ship. A live DJ brings chill beats to accompany your afternoon sail-a-way cocktail, and at this time of year in the Mediterranean, the sun doesn’t set until 9:30pm, so relax and enjoy!

The first-rate retail experience at sea for men – Mankind, has apparel, leather items, watches, jewelry, and more – all expertly curated for the male shopper.

Healthy smoothies and bites weave in the wellness experience even without you knowing. Fitness (F45) and spa programs and products ( Goop from Gweneth Paltrow ) are available and at your fingertips throughout the day. In the Spa, there is an unbelievable menu of services. Two of my favorites are the BIOTEC Super-Charger for Men – this facial helps de-stress, de-age and de-fatigue the complexion. A triple hit of ultrasonic peeling, steam and galvanic current delivers a deep clean, simultaneously exfoliating and powering up antiwrinkle properties; and the Coconut Poultice Massage, which uses perfectly warmed pure coconut compresses to massage the body, releasing natural emollients to nourish and moisturize the skin followed by a traditional hands-on massage to relax and de-stress the muscles. In addition to the Spa and Fitness Center, you can take your experience to another level at The Retreat, private suites and exclusive spaces, including a two-story sundeck, lounge, and restaurant – all creating a resort-within-a-resort.

With a 100% fully-vaccinated passenger and crew policy, health and cleanliness are top priorities and highly visible – everything is constantly cleaned, swept, wiped down – from the ship railings to the tour buses – with hand sanitizer available. This focused effort provides one of the safest modes of travel, as well as passenger peace-of-mind.  Celebrity demonstrates a commitment to shaping the future of travel.

celebrity cruises gay friendly

The thoughtful little things like remembering one’s preferences at dinner, holding a special item in the retail shop, walking you to a specific destination … the entire crew works together seamlessly to make your holiday stress-free. While I certainly couldn’t interact with the full complement of 1400+ (from 60 countries), I would like to express a heartfelt “thank you” to a few who made our trip so enjoyable on so many levels. Sole in the Mankind retail store went above and beyond in helping with us with some specialty items (yes, this ship is aptly named); Sandeep, Shanice (oh we loved Grandmother’s freshly baked bread), and Natalie, who served beautiful and delicious dishes in the Tuscan Dining Room; Carlos in Café al Bacio prepared the best sugar-free vanilla lattes around; Flavia in Eden (a multi-use restaurant/bar/lounge filled with tropical plants) for suggesting the roasted Carabineros shrimp and the sheep’s milk ricotta gnocchi with smoked pecorino cheese; Grace who made all of our martini dreams come true in the Casino; and many others.

Celebrity’s slogan is “We believe in opening up the world – for everyone,” and the company delivers on that promise. Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity’s parent company, received a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Corporate Equality Index, the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality. “We want everyone to feel welcome and want to be known as a diverse and inclusive brand,” says Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO of Celebrity.

Recognizing the need to improve the representation of all marginalized communities, Celebrity created The All-Inclusive Photo Project (“AIPP”), a new campaign and the world’s first free to use, ‘open source’ travel image library. I was privileged to view some of the images and speak with one of the photographers, Giles Duley, an English documentary photographer and himself a triple amputee. The stunning images feature models, athletes, artists, and activists, all from underrepresented groups, experiencing the wonder of travel and sharing their unique story.  In addition to Giles Duley, the works of acclaimed photographers Annie Leibovitz, Naima Green, a Black, queer New York-based photographer, and Jarrad Seng, an Australia-based photographer, filmmaker and creative director of Malaysian-Chinese descent, are also showcased.

Cruising has always been a desirable vacation option. But as travelers become more discerning and in tune with social issues, Celebrity presents itself front and center for your consideration. A partner on so many levels – LGBTQ equality; gender equality (Celebrity boosted the number of women working across their fleet from 3% to 32%; 45% of guest-facing crew on Beyond are women); the environment (everything on BEYOND is recycled and the ship’s carbon footprint is 30% less than a land resort; and they have a 90% reduction in single use plastics); and the world (Celebrity supports and provides financial assistance to its Ukrainian crew and established a fund to help get families out of Ukraine).

As I write this toward the end of my voyage, live piano music plays to accompany my morning coffee in the Cafe al Bacio. This spot, along with the Martini Bar, became the rendezvous for my fellow cruise acquaintances and I during my time on board. I feel as though I am leaving many new friends once I disembark from Beyond. But I will be back.

Are you ready to join in the adventure and discover the world again? Whether on Beyond or another of their award-winning ships, you can read about all the destinations and experiences awaiting you on Celebrity and book your cruise at https://www.celebritycruises.com/ .

Kathy Griffin is one of the most resilient entertainment personalities on record. Living life as an open book, we have been witnessing her career triumphs as well as her personal and public low points. Hitting the road with her new show tour, My Life on the PTSD-List, and having just announced her Fall extension hitting up Carnegie Hall and The Chicago Theatre among a long list of others, she is once again using her voice to cause a sensation on behalf of the LGBTQ community, those who suffer from PTSD, and those who give a damn about the future of the nation. A recent cancer survivor and being diagnosed with PTSD, she is hitting the stage maybe a bit more delicate, but no less fierce.

What was supposed to be a quick, formal interview turned into a lively and revealing conversation with Kathy about some of the bumps in the road, grief, the power of comedy, her activism as an ally that actually started when she was a kid, of course we talked politics, and even have a pop-up appearance from E. Jean Carroll who was in Kathy’s hotel room when we chatted, we talked about Kathy’s amazing parents, and we got all the scoop on Kathy’s new tour. And kids, she needs our help. Check out the part of our chat where we talk about Kathy’s three-year court case that is happening in Tennessee, all because she stood up for our community on social media. Why hasn’t the media made a bigger deal out of it? Good question. If she loses this fight, it will set a precedent for capturing hate action on social media. Time to rally the troops!

Celebrity Cruises for 2023: Pride Party at Sea, LGBTQ+ Caribbean Cruise, Same-Sex Weddings

Celebrity Cruises has a long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Celebrity, for example, has been the presenting sponsor for Miami Beach Pride for several years. In January 2018, Celebrity became the first major cruise line to host the first ever legal same-sex marriage at sea: the wedding of Francisco Vargas and Benjamin Gray. The fleet’s captains officiate such ceremonies, creating an unforgettable experience for couples and their guests alike.

Celebrity has won an LGBTQ+ Friendly Travel Company of the year honor at the TTG Travel Awards, and has frequently won the Best Large Ship Cruise Line for LGBTQ+ Passengers at the Cruizie Awards. It has also won the Gold Award for Best Cruise Line for LGBTQ Passengers at the Travvy Awards.

Next year promises to be another award-worthy one for Celebrity in terms of LGBTQ offerings. Here are just a few:

VACAYA Caribbean Cruise on the Celebrity Reflection

Sailing February 12–19, 2023, for 7 nights from convenient and gay friendly Fort Lauderdale on the beautifully appointed Celebrity Reflection , VACAYA is taking guests to 5 different countries to celebrate their 5th Birthday! In honor of 5 years, guests will experience the very best of the U.S., Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Grand Cayman.

VACAYA charters the entire ship for LGBT+ guests and dazzles with star-studded onboard entertainment that has been called out in other press for being “packed with top-tier entertainers—a hallmark of the brand, which has quickly risen to best-in-class for queer travelers. With this charter cruise, VACAYA and Celebrity will offer the sale of unlimited beverage packages.

Pride Party at Sea 2023

The Pride Party at Sea Flagship, Celebrity Edge , will kick-off the Fifth annual Pride Party at Sea during its June 10, 2023, sailing. The party will take place in tandem across the award-winning Celebrity fleet, with each ship “handing off the party baton” to the next to keep the festivities running across hemispheres and time zones.

A variety of multi-generational LGBTQ+ focused programming will take place throughout the month of June. Together, Celebrity officers, staff, and guests around the world will participate in the cruise line’s signature Pride programming.

To learn more about what is in store at Celebrity for 2023, the San Francisco Bay Times reached out to LaTonya Lawson, a Regional Marketing Leader for the company.

San Francisco Bay Times: We have been hearing a lot of buzz about Celebrity’s sailings to the Mexican Riviera that continue through April 21, 2023. What is new about them?

LaTonya Lawson: For the first time, Celebrity’s stunning Solstice ship is coming to California—departing Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera. This is such a great opportunity to experience destinations including Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlán. Right now, we have incredible rates starting at just $399 per person—based on double occupancy.

San Francisco Bay Times: For those who have never been on a Celebrity Cruise, what can they expect?

LaTonya Lawson: We sail to amazing destinations including Europe, Asia, South America, Alaska, the Caribbean, and, of course, the aforementioned Mexican Riviera. Our ships are impeccably designed. Every space, every view—created for the ultimate onboard experience—all brought to you by a team of world-class interior designers, stylists, and landscape artists.

We serve exquisite culinary experiences. Our menus are inspired by our destinations and crafted with locally sourced ingredients by our Michelin-starred Chef Cornelius Gallagher. Casual or fancier, from the main dining to the themed restaurants, your experience will be so much more than a meal.

For the past 9 years, Celebrity Cruises has received the coveted Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence—a first in the industry, making us the most awarded wine collection at sea.

San Francisco Bay Times: What about Celebrity’s entertainment and service?

LaTonya Lawson: Our entertainment onboard is transformative. Unpredictable. The kind of experiences that keep you on the edge of your seat or at the top of your game: casinos, art galleries, a theater that is a technological masterpiece. Bars, lounges, and world-class shopping—all await you!

Our service is unrivaled—and world renown. From our stateroom attendants and waiters to our certified sommeliers, our onboard team’s mission is to spoil you with their attentive service.

We are focused on the well-being of our guests and have incorporated destination-inspired treatments from some of the world’s most influential wellness leaders. Onboard, you will find many next-level experiences to help you relax and rejuvenate.

When it comes to your accommodations, we pride ourselves with creating luxurious living spaces and a dreamy coziness including our signature bedding, eco-friendly bath products, and sumptuous towels.

Book the Retreat and enjoy the most spectacular suites where our best amenities are always included: premium drinks, premium WiFi, prepaid tips, credit for shore excursions, and an onboard credit to spend on anything more you’d like.

San Francisco Bay Times: You mentioned the impeccable design of Celebrity’s ships. What’s new in this regard?

LaTonya Lawson: Celebrity introduced a new series of ships that marked the turning point of design. Starting with Celebrity Edge , our new ships have revolutionized how a ship can move you … not only to from one destination to another but move your soul. Give you goosebumps. From the incredible Magic Carpet to the unique outward facing design, these ships break from tradition, the status quo, and any preconceived notion about cruising.

Created by a team of world-renown designers, the ships have elements that have been taken to the edge of possibilities. With sailings to Europe and Caribbean itineraries, our new series includes Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , Celebrity Beyond , and the highly anticipated Celebrity Ascent .

Actually, prices are comparable, if not a little less expensive than booking directly with other ocean liners. Both ocean and river cruises are available.  For the Halloween cruise, prices start at $1025 per person. For 2021 this cruise will take place on Virgin’s brand new “Scarlet Lady” ship.

The most expensive “cruise” I found was for $3,699 (look in Aquafest Vacations) . This cruise is on the Egyptian Nile River.

Many voyages for 2021 will be on new ships.

What is Offered with Aquafest Cruises?

Aquafest offers many features when you take one of their cruises.

  • Discounts for singles, couples, and groups
  • Celebrations including Mardi Gras and Halloween
  • Parties including Beach, Costume, and Cocktail
  • Formal Dinners
  • Shows including Celebrity Guests, Game shows, and Comedy shows

Here’s what Fellow LGBTQ Have to Say About Aquafest

The responses I went through on Aquafest’s Face Book page   and cruise critic were extremely positive. Everyone spoke of having fun and truly enjoying their experience. It sounds like the events, cruises, and ship staff were exemplary. The Aquafest cruises and festivities really bring out the vacation.

Vacaya When You Just Want to be with Like-minded People

Vacaya   is made for the entire LGBTQ+ community. This is the only vacation company made for LGBTQ only vacations. These are the cruises currently being offered through Vacaya.

  • New Orleans

These are specialty cruises catered just for the LGBTQ family. They are few and exclusive.

Do Vacaya Cruises Cost More?

You may have heard or read that gay only cruises cost more. Though this is true, it offers a different vacation. A cruise spent with others who are LGBTQ or are supporters of the community. There’s no need to feel uncomfortable with who you are. It’s your vacation, and you deserve to relax, have fun, and be you.

Pricing varies between and within each cruise. The least expensive begins at $897 for an interior stateroom on the Caribbean Cruise. The highest price is listed at $9,997 per person for a suite on the Iceland Cruise. It is important to make your reservations early as you will get the best choices on pricing.

What’s included?

  • All standard meals
  • Staff Assistance

What Vacaya Offers

The entire cruise ship or resort is for Vacaya guests. They are exclusive vacations for LGBTQIAPK community. It’s about celebrating the diversity that makes us human while experiencing new places. Vacaya also offers their Solo Traveling Ease Program for singles that are traveling alone.

Vacaya is for adults over 18. They do require any one 18 to 20 to be accompanied by and stay with an adult over 25 years of age.

What Others Say About Vacaya

All I can say is wow. It was difficult to find a negative comment when it comes to Vacaya. Reading Cruise Critic speaks of having a fantastic time and attentive staff. The festivities are amazing. The atmosphere is comfortable and friendly amongst guests. There were comments on how the cruise was like a gay summer camp and how new friends exchanged phone numbers at the end of the voyage.

Atlantis for the All Gay Experience

Atlantis is the all gay cruise line that has hosted over 25,000 guests. Atlantis has been in business for 19 years.

Atlantis charters ships from top cruise lines. These are large cruise ships, depending on the ship’s size, there will be 1,000 to 5,000 guests on a voyage. The ships include:

  • Virgin’s New Scarlet Lady
  • Oceania Riviera
  • Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas
  • Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas

This company is the most favored for all gay cruises. An Atlantis Cruise will take you to exotic places. Below are the upcoming cruises.

  • Virgin Caribbean
  • Venice to Athens
  • Odyssey Med
  • 30th Anniversary Caribbean

What will a Cruise with Atlantis Cost?

Prices vary depending on the cruise and what suite options you want. For the 30th Anniversary cruise, the price begins at $2,399 for a Junior Suite and goes all the way to $22,000 for a Royal Loft Suite. At the time of writing this, all options were sold out, except for the Junior Suite.

The Virgin Caribbean Cruise will cost from $2,999 to $8,999. Again this ship is almost full, and there are  limited reservations available.

Venice to Athens Cruise prices are from $4,999 (the only cabins still available) to $13,200. The Odyssey Med Cruise runs from $3,599 to $9,500.

Atlantis is obviously a very popular choice. All of the cabin options aside from the small cabins are filled on each ship!

What Do You Get With Atlantis?

With Atlantis, you will receive everything you need.

  • Entertainment

Atlantis does offer a room share program for those traveling alone. Athens also offers a daily meeting for those in a 12 step program. All staff are gay friendly and often ask to work on the Atlantis sailings because they are so fun. These cruises are adult only, and it is required that those 18 to 21 travel with a companion of at least 25 years of age.

Parties! Atlantis has the parties you’re looking for. Many say it’s like one non-stop party, but in reality, there are 8. Take advantage of their “$200 gets you on board,”   which is where you can make monthly payments toward the trip with $200 down.

What the Gay Community Says About Atlantis Cruises

The reviews I have read are all good. The Globe Trotter Guys rave about the parties and how fun and easy it is to meet people. The food was great, and the trip was fun. Most expressed that you must experience at least one Atlantis Gay Cruise.

In Cruise Critic , there were a few questions about drinks being included with the price, and the answer is no. As someone pointed out, people tend to drink 3 to 4 times as much on these chartered cruises, so the drinks are a real revenue.

People that have traveled solo say they have not experienced problems with roommates they were paired with but have heard bad stories. It was noted that the staff is there to help with any problems and disputes.

12 top gay cruises you don’t want to miss in 2024 and 2025

All Inclusive Project_Celebrity Cruises_00012

There's never been a better time to consider a gay cruise. Itineraries include more remote destinations, and more charter companies are offering a wider variety of cruise experiences to meet the full spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community. Also, the ships chartered are almost uniformly elevated and luxurious.

No longer are gay and lesbian groups and full-ship charters relegated to older, tired vessels. Full-ship gay charters command big business for the cruise industry, and major cruise lines are responding by offering their newest and most exciting ships. Many charter companies will take over the entire ship, bringing aboard their own dance parties, entertainment, activities and hosts to tailor the vacation experience to their audience.

The magic of a gay cruise lies in the shared experience of traveling with your community. Each sailing fosters an environment where you can be yourself. You can choose whether to blend in with the crowd or stand out and be celebrated for your flair.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Bonds often form more quickly and naturally aboard a ship where you're surrounded by your people, especially on full-ship charters where large mixers kick off each sailing.

Expect welcome parties with themes that go beyond just a name tag, whether that's icebreaker games or an opportunity to dress up in a way that signifies where you're from or how you identify. You'll find more openness throughout the ship compared to a traditional non-themed cruise, especially on the pool deck, as many passengers seek out the experience to expand their social circle.

Don't miss the boat on making lifelong friends during an epic cruise vacation. Here are 12 of the best gay cruises in 2024 and 2025.

I Went on My First Gay Cruise — Here's What It Was Like

Here's why I chose vacation company Vacaya to book my first gay cruise.

celebrity cruises gay friendly

Nonstop parties, unwarranted comments, and a lack of diversity were a few reasons why I avoided booking a gay cruise. However, that changed with Vacaya, a large-scale adults-only vacation company that touts its inclusivity to the entire LGBTQ+ community and our straight allies.

I've always been insecure about my weight, and if the marketing strategy for an LGBTQ+ cruise, vacation, or tour company doesn't include me or make me feel seen — as a chubby Black gay man — I avoid it. But when I was offered the opportunity to sail with Vacaya, I asked a few friends about their gay cruise experiences — specifically, about the company's chartered sailings and resort vacations. I heard words and phrases like "diverse," "body positive," and "it is what you make it" — and that made me happy.

So, I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and join more than 1,500 passengers aboard the Celebrity Millennium for a seven-day Caribbean cruise with stops in Aruba and Curaçao.

A Conscious Decision to Be Inclusive

After a couple of hours on the ship, before leaving Port Everglades in Hollywood, Florida, I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of passengers boarding. The age of passengers skewed older, but it was a microcosm of the LGBTQ+ community — different ethnicities, sexual orientations, and more. Even before setting sail, some of my preconceived notions about gay cruises seemed to fade.

That same diversity also extended to Vacaya 's programming and entertainment. Glee star Amber Riley paid homage to soulful divas like Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston. Actress Susie Mosher added comedic levity as the host of a show where fearless passengers sang their favorite tunes. The Skivvies performed a roster of music mash-ups with high-brow humor, comedians Gene Moore and Geneva Joy made us laugh until we cried, actress Marilu Henner dished about her Hollywood career, and drag queen Shangela took center stage for an engaging show that included a tribute to Beyonce.

Throughout the cruise, passengers went all out dressing up in elaborate costumes to show off their creativity at theme parties — usually with DJs Corey Craig or Susan Morabito at the helm. The DJs largely catered to an audience who preferred electronic dance music (EDM), and some passengers, including myself, wished there was a bit more variety.

"There were different ethnicities on board: Black, white, Spanish, and Asian. Vacaya should consider adding a little Afrobeat and other music genres that people can enjoy," said Samira Alston, an African American bisexual passenger from Brooklyn, New York.

Meeting people like Alston was easy. There was a strong sense of community on board, and it was an effortless, stress-free process to connect with different people and exchange cruise cards — one way to stay in touch on the ship.

I met several people, including Ken, who drove 12 hours from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to go on his first gay cruise; Eric and his partner, Jason, from Tacoma, Washington, who chatted about how they met, Jason's "coming out" story, and his amicable divorce from his ex-wife; and Oscar, a passenger from L.A., who was single and ready to mingle after a divorce from his ex-husband.

I discovered that a gay cruise allows us to be fully ourselves in a respectful environment, reuniting with old friends from previous cruises and cultivating new friendships that go beyond our seven-day journey.

The Nitty-gritty of Cruising

This wasn't a typical vacation for me as I had to work, so I paid for Celebrity's Xcelerate Stream package for two devices (phone and laptop). The unsecured Wi-Fi access was spotty and slow in my cabin, and I often had to go to public areas for better reception. If you can, I recommend skipping the Wi-Fi charge and truly unplugging.

True for many cruises, there are also separate prepaid packages for dining and beverages. I was more than happy to eat most of my meals at the Oceanview Cafe , an international buffet serving Mexican, British, Italian, Asian, and other cuisines. I splurged an extra $45 to eat at the Tuscan Grille , and was also invited to try Le Petit Chef , which blends 3D tabletop entertainment with a delicious four-course meal. I don't drink much, so I opted out of purchasing a beverage package and paid for cocktails and wine as needed — primarily for the poolside parties.

As for activities, the shore excursions in Aruba offered a variety of beach, wildlife, and immersive experiences. In Curaçao, I visited the Dolphin Academy for an up-close animal encounter. It's worth noting that this three-hour experience costs $159 (excluding lunch) and included waiting a considerable amount of time for the 15-minute dolphin show, which may be underwhelming for some.

Cruise Travel During a Pandemic

These days, it's impossible to discuss cruise travel without mentioning the elephant in the room: COVID-19. A week before I was scheduled to depart, a Royal Caribbean ship (not a Vacaya chartered cruise) was turned away from Aruba and Curaçao due to the number of positive COVID cases on board. So, I was concerned that we wouldn't be able to stop at the same ports, too.

I made the conscious decision to go on a cruise, understanding the potential risks, even as a fully vaccinated person. All passengers had to provide negative COVID-19 test results no more than 48 hours before the day we set sail. I took an at-home test, a rapid antigen test at Reagan National Airport, and ordered a 10-pack of N95 masks . And when it came to the poolside theme parties, I enjoyed them from the top balcony to avoid the large crowds below. Passengers were diligent about adhering to Celebrity's protocols to mask up for all indoor performances and activities.

Bill Onieal and Ryan Focht understood the precautions necessary to stay safe on the cruise. Onieal is a nurse with 13 years of experience in the emergency department, having also worked in palliative care and special needs pediatrics, and Focht is a chemist working in preclinical toxicology research. From Jersey City, New Jersey, the engaged couple is fully vaccinated, received their booster shots, and gets tested regularly because of their professions, but Onieal said, "There's always the chance that we may contract COVID."

"The safety measures that were implemented were the only reason we felt safe attending a Vacaya cruise during the pandemic," said Focht. "Celebrity and Vacaya were transparent about their contact-tracing protocols."

Of course, doing all the right things doesn't entirely erase the risk of COVID. In a post-cruise press release, Vacaya cofounder and CEO Randle Roper said, "Over the course of the week, 27 guests tested positive and were placed in insolation, and 72 additional guests who'd been in close contact with a positive person were tested, placed in quarantine for the recommended 24 hours, and retested before being declared COVID-free and released."

Final Takeaways

Looking back on my cruise, I would do it again as a solo traveler. In fact, a few friends and I have already discussed the possibility of booking Vacaya's fifth-anniversary Caribbean cruise on the Celebrity Reflection , scheduled for February 2023. Celebrity's safety protocols and Vacaya's attention to detail, transparency, and inclusive vibe and strategy are all reasons why I was able to enjoy my first gay cruise and return home COVID-free.

Crystal Cruises Gay Weddings

For those of you wanting to celebrate your special day with Crystal Cruises during your cruise holiday, you’ll be pleased to know that this cruise line offers tailor-made packages with award-winning planning and amenities both onboard and ashore. They’re a little on the expensive side, but you should have no issues organising a same-sex marriage ceremony with Crystal Cruises. Virgin Voyages

Cruise type: Premium adult-only Price range : Mid

With Pride parties aplenty and itineraries littered with LGBTQ+ specific events and activities, you’ll be more than welcome – both as a solo gay traveller, or an LGBTQ+ couple – on Virgin Voyages . Virgin Voyages Gay Weddings

At the moment, Virgin Voyages is not offering any wedding celebration packages – so, you’ll have to look at another cruise line if you specifically want to have your big day during a cruise holiday. However, there are countless other celebration packages available and a Virgin Voyages cruise would be a fantastic option for any honeymoon cruise holidays you might have planned – LGBTQ+ couples included. So, if you want to celebrate a wedding with Virgin Voyages, it might be best to have the actual ceremony elsewhere and then enjoy a celebratory cruise with friends and family afterwards.

Other Cruise Lines Perfect for Gay Cruises and LGBTQ+ Cruise Holidays

If you’re looking for a warm and welcome cruise holiday as a gay solo traveller, a lesbian couple, or anyone who identifies with any part of the LGBTQ+ spectrum, you’ll find your options a lot more open than you might think. Norwegian Cruise Line , P&O Cruises , Princess Cruises , and Cunard are all LGBTQ+ friendly and offer a variety of LGBTQ+ specific activities and events during their cruises. Those of you looking to host a same-sex wedding with these cruise lines, though, may be disappointed – not because the cruise lines themselves aren’t wholly supportive of it, but due to changing laws in nations such as Bermuda. So, as always, if you’re planning to celebrate your marriage with a cruise holiday, it’s best to double check the local laws and regulations of anywhere you might be visiting beforehand – it’s better to be safe when making these important decisions.

The 9 Best Gay Cruises for 2024 (+ Planning Tips)

W hether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what's right for them.)

Category Navigation Box Enhancement : Table of Contents - Travel - Best Gay Cruises

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

"[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences," says Gunn. "The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. In August, VACAYA has a 12-night river cruise in Northern Europe on board Advance by Transcend Cruises; this sailing includes the Amsterdam Pride event. The 11-night Antarctica expedition on Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator in December 2024 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

Virgin Voyages

The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

Atlantis Events

The world's largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations. For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Brand g Vacations

Specializing in all-gay river cruises – and now luxury ocean liners – Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world. Chartered river cruises typically welcome between 40 and 200 LGBTQ passengers (and their straight allies), which allows cruisers to get to know one another in a smaller setting. Guests tend to skew more mature (think: 40 and older), and the line attracts both men and women.

Onboard entertainment differs slightly from larger ocean voyages: Expect more cabaret-style entertainment than massive all-night dance parties. Cruisers will also enjoy performances by drag queens, gay Broadway stars and more, on top of typical river cruise perks like sightseeing and lavish meals. Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Brand g aims to provide a nearly all-inclusive cruise experience , with Mercedes or small van airport transfers, upscale hotel stays prior to embarkation, and unlimited alcoholic beverages as well as meals included in the fare. As such, prices tend to be on the high end. Plus, cruisers can feel good about their trip knowing that Brand g donates to causes in the U.S. and around the world that assist LGBTQ refugees, AIDS organizations, LGBTQ centers and more.

In 2024, Brand g sails through unique waterways around the world, including the Amazon, the Loire, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line's small cruise ship charters also take guests to Iceland, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Croatia and other European destinations.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity's signature Pride Party at Sea and more. The Italian Riviera & France cruise will depart from Barcelona on June 8, 2024, on the new Celebrity Ascent; this 10-night Mediterranean sailing stops at ports in France, Italy and Malta. Private travel companies like VACAYA also charter Celebrity ships for all-gay voyages throughout the year.

Specifically marketed toward lesbians and LGBTQ women, Olivia has hosted more than 350,000 travelers by land and sea over five decades. Cruisers can choose between river voyages or ocean sailings to destinations around the world. On the lesbian cruises, expect a mix of nostalgic decade-themed dance parties, folk singers, writing workshops, karaoke and other activities. Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships' lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia's specialized programs. There are group and solo traveler meetups, as well as programs like Sisters, which is for LGBTQ women of color; Gen-O, for cruisers 40 and younger; Women in Uniform gatherings, for veterans and those currently in the armed forces; and events for OWLs (which stands for "older, wiser lesbians"). Past cruisers on Olivia's voyages report feeling a true sense of community and belonging on board, resulting in a fun, carefree trip.

In June 2024, set sail with Olivia from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin on Windstar Cruises' Star Legend. Or, visit the islands of Tahiti on the line's Star Breeze in September. Other cruise itineraries include Alaska, the Greek Isles, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Navigator of the Seas also hosts a seven-night itinerary throughout the year that calls on Mazatlan, Mexico, as well.

The Cruise With La Demence

According to past cruisers, if you're looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence – French for "the madness" – primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries – which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations – as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Enjoy unique events like drag bingo, high heel runs and more.

La Demence sails every summer to European destinations like Greece, Italy and Malta. The 2023 cruise was chartered on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. Fares include all food and nonalcoholic beverages, plus access to all parties, shows and the onboard gym.

The Miami-based company, with the vision of founder and chief executive officer Craig Smith, offers small group land tours and full-charter cruises for like-minded travelers with a focus on giving back to the communities they visit. The company also supports LGBTQ organizations, such as the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign.

Past guests of their tours say their fellow travelers were as fun and interesting as the destinations. They appreciated the excellent personalized planning for the trips by Smith and his life partner, Rafael Rodriguez.

The company's cruises in 2024 include a seven-night Galápagos sailing in late September on a Relais & Chateau luxury yacht: Ecoventura's new ship, Evolve. The intimate ship accommodates just 20 passengers. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways' Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. I’ll start this review by saying I am a very experienced cruiser with status on Disney, Royal and Carnival and this was my first and probably last Celebrity cruise for a while. Starting on a positive note with pros - the interior of the ship was redone during COVID so the rooms are very pretty. We were on Celebrity summit April 1st cruise, we lost power one day, we lost water. One day, we couldn't stop at one of the ports, our internet was bad, and I reached out to them seeing if we could get some sort of compensation or refund and they said no. I'm kind of confused because I would think since we couldn't stop at one of our ports we should get a refund on the port charge and we they ... Read More

Review for a Caribbean - Southern Cruise on Celebrity Equinox

Thanks to Covid restrictions and other family travels, this was our first cruise in nearly 5 years. We had cruised twice before on Equinox and were a little concerned that the ship might have changed considerably. However, we needn't have worried as everything was more or less as we remembered it! Our only gripe was that most of our favourite, and quiet (!), sunbathing spots were now reserved ... Read More

Review for a Europe - Eastern Mediterranean Cruise on Celebrity Infinity

A 23 year old ship is never going to be impressive compared to a glitzy new one, but you know that before you board. What Infinity might lack in the the latest pizzazz it more than makes up for in style and friendliness and the recent dry-dock has left her nicely smartened up. Many carpets, furniture and beds have been replaced. (They even renewed many balcony chairs mid cruise). Being a ... Read More

Review for a Caribbean - Southern Cruise on Celebrity Silhouette

We had a wonderful time on our 10-day cruise!! Eddy Jenkins was an awesome cruise director, and the entire staff was friendly and anxious to see that we had a good time and enjoyed good service! The rooms were cleaned twice daily, the food was abundant and delicious, and the desserts were "to die for." We enjoyed all of the ports visited, especially Antigua and St. Maarten. The entertainment ... Read More

Review for a Transatlantic Cruise on Celebrity Constellation

We did a transatlantic in March 2024 from Tampa to Barcelona. We regret to say that, with a few exceptions, this cruise was very disappointing. The worst thing was the food. It became a real problem. To begin with, it was very very repetitive. After three days we realized that almost two thirds of the buffet was the same for lunch and dinner everyday. That might not have been such a problem if ... Read More

Are Celebrity Cruises Gay Friendly?

celebrity cruises gay friendly

It is important to me to travel with companies that support the LGBTQ+ community. As a community I feel we should stick together and support those companies that support us. I was delighted to see Celebrity Cruise Line’s involvement in and commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. I am proud to say that Celebrity is most definitely a gay friendly cruise line. In fact, Celebrity performed the first legal same-sex marriage at sea.

Being a gay friendly cruise line means more than just being accepting of the guests’ sexual orientation. For Celebrity Cruises, equality and acceptance is for all involved. This not only includes the guests onboard their ships, but their employees located across the globe as well. In recent years Celebrity was honored with numerous awards including…

  • Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality, by the Human Rights Campaign
  • LGBT Friendly Cruise Line, by Gay Travel Award
  • LGBT Friendly Travel Company of the Year, by Travel Trade Gazette’s TTG Travel Awards

Simon Akinwolere, Cruise Director for Celebrity Cruises, summarizes it best below. Here he describes why “Celebrity Cruises is the best cruise line for the LGBT+ community.”

Here we get the perspective of Becky Thompson-Foley, Associate Vice President of Entertainment for Celebrity Cruises. Becky attended Miami Pride for the first time in 2018, as Celebrity is a proud annual sponsor of the event. You’ll also see Francisco Vargas and Benjamin Gray, the first same-sex couple ever married onboard a Celebrity Cruise ship. The couple was not only chosen to be the first same-sex couple married onboard, but were also honored with leading Miami Pride.

Celebrity Cruises is not a sponsor of this post. I just felt it was important to expose the good deeds of such a large corporation. When you’re planning your next vacation, regardless of which cruise line or resort you choose, please consider those companies that support the same values as you. As for me, I cannot wait to #GetOnBoard.

New to TTG?

Lgbt-friendly cruising onboard celebrity reflection.

Celebrity Cruises has won LGBTQ awards in recent years with its onboard meet-ups an example of how it ensures all guests feel welcome. Sophie Griffiths embarks with her girlfriend to discover how the line caters for the market.

The scene in front of us is comical. A DJ whoops from behind his decks as 100 people dance energetically around him, mouthing lyrics to various songs. Guests stream in from different directions to join in, although it is the laughter that draws them, rather than music. Aside from the tapping of feet, the rustling of the crowd, and the odd shout, the air is silent. The music is instead emitted from headphones, which flash different colours – red, green, blue – depending on the channel chosen by the guests for their personal disco. I’ll admit this was not quite what I had expected from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) meet-up at the Martini bar, as advertised on the ship’s itinerary.

My girlfriend Georgie and I are on Celebrity Reflection – our first sailing with the line – on a voyage around the Med to celebrate my birthday. As a gay couple, we had decided to head to the LGBTQ gathering, and though we hadn’t been sure what to expect, a silent disco definitely wasn’t it.

Bemused, I ask a crew member if we are in the right place. “Yep,” she grins as she hands me headphones, “it’s for anyone and everyone.”

And this, explains the ship’s event coordinator Zsofia Bak, is exactly how the ship’s LGBTQ events should be.

“We don’t want to segregate people,” she smiles. “We advertise it [the meet-up] in the daily information guides so LGBTQ people know that there will be others here, but we also want to make sure everyone is welcome.”

It is this ethos that was behind Celebrity Cruises’s new slogan – “Sail beyond borders” – introduced by the line last year and which has been behind it securing numerous LGBTQ awards in recent years, including LGBTQ Friendly Travel Company of the Year at last year’s TTG Travel Awards.

We embark Reflection in Barcelona, when it is halfway through its western Mediterranean tour. Waiting in our stateroom is a double bed (always a nice surprise for an LGBTQ couple) and a bottle of champagne wishing me Happy Birthday – one of the many touches offered for those celebrating special occasions.

This also includes a complimentary dinner that evening in one of the ship’s speciality restaurants. We opt for the Tuscan Grille, where we enjoy Italian dishes at a table for two, watching the orange dusk as it is slowly pinpricked by stars.

Later in the week we find ourselves at another LGBTQ meet-up, again at the Martini Bar, enjoying post-dinner cocktails with a variety of other guests. The first LGBTQ meet-up on each sailing is given a slightly different format however. Held in the same venue, Bak explains that it is hosted by senior officers – which is important, she says, because of the message it sends.

“We want LGBTQ guests to know that we are around and approachable, and here for them if they need us.”

The line’s support of LGBTQ people – and diversity in general – is a move driven from the top, and is not just limited to guests; last year parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd appointed its first director of diversity and inclusion to encourage and embrace diversity among its employees (see box).

“When crew first come onboard, they must complete the diversity training the same way they do with safety training, and they must pass it,” Bak explains.

Guests too are held just as accountable with the line operating “a zero-tolerance policy”.

“Of course, that works both ways,” she giggles. “We don’t want anyone behaving inappropriately – gay or straight.”

My girlfriend and I are greeted and accepted warmly by passengers and crew, all of whom assume correctly that we are together, rather than just friends. This welcoming attitude is also acknowledged by another gay couple we happen to meet while on a Ben Fogle mountain biking excursion in the foothills of Malaga (crafted by the expedition expert himself for Celebrity).

As we head for lunch, our legs aching, a fellow cyclist explains that he and his husband enjoy cruising with Celebrity precisely because they feel so comfortable to be themselves as a couple. “We’ve done gay cruises solely for LGBTQ people, but we find they tend to be more for single people and groups. We love going on cruises with Celebrity because they’re for everyone. We can be a couple, just like everyone else.”

And as with any guests, whether families, elderly couples, solo travellers, or LGBTQ passengers, Bak says the crew are keen to help with advice about port calls.

“If we know we have a large LGBTQ group coming onboard [which she says is common], then we make sure we’ve done our research about places they might like to go to in port. In Mykonos, for example, we know a good gay beach to recommend, and in Istanbul there’s a great LGBTQ bar we can suggest. And of course there’s lots of great gay bars in Barcelona,” she grins.

Meanwhile, onboard the ship the line offers same-sex weddings with Bak herself helping to organise several.

“We’ve also got a lesbian engagement coming up that we’re preparing for,” she adds. “The lady has already contacted us because she wants to propose on the helipad, so we’re going to set that up. Actually, two ladies just got engaged on this cruise,” she smiles.

Back at the silent disco, the crowd continues to grow and it’s impossible to discern who is here for the LGBTQ meet-up. Everyone, though, is clearly here to dance. I slip on a pair of headphones, flicking the channel to green and join others in attempting to moonwalk as we sing along to Michael Jackson’s Thriller . My girlfriend, ever the cooler one, flicks hers to blue and starts mouthing lyrics to Kanye West’s Stronger . We all sway to our different rhythms, a sea of flashing lights; one crowd together.

Book it: Celebrity Cruises’ 11-night Best of Western Mediterranean fly/cruise starts from £2,249pp, including the classic drinks package, $300 onboard credit, flights and transfers. Price based on two sharing and an August 21, 2017 departure.

GRANT VAN ULBRICH Director, diversity and inclusion, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd

WHAT IS YOUR REMIT? I work on behalf of the cruise line’s crew at sea and on land, worldwide, ensuring that we attract, celebrate, reward and retain a diverse and inclusive employee base while supporting all guests. I champion our Executive Diversity Council and Employee Resource Groups and challenge the status quo.

WHY WAS YOUR ROLE CREATED? I made the case for the role to RCCL human resources boss Paul Parker and Royal Caribbean International president and chief executive Michael Bayley. The word has been getting out to the fleet and has encouraged more crew members to come out.

WHY IS YOUR ROLE IMPORTANT TO THE BUSINESS? When you bring unconscious bias training, for example, into your enterprise, your return on investment is huge. It affects everything from employee retention to who gets hired in the first place. It ensures that the business has the right people in place for the role.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT IN YOUR ROLE? I’ve learnt that you can’t really show your political leaning… You have to champion the other side too if you’re going to be truly inclusive. I’ve learnt a lot about unconscious bias and we’re rolling out an e-learning platform about that.

Best LGBT Friendly Cruise Companies

The LBGTQ community travel industry is currently a booming business, and many cruise companies have been forced to adjust.

As a result, many cruise companies are actively protecting the rights of the gay community.

So, what are the best LBGT friendly cruise companies? Read on to find out.

Is Royal Caribbean LGBT Friendly?

The Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruising companies in the world, so it’s natural to want to know whether it’s gay-friendly.

And yes, according to Steve, the CEO of Gay Travel, the Royal Caribbean not only has impressive services, but they’re very accommodating to gay travelers.

a big gay friendly cruise sailing in the sea

This is a big deal because this is the first cruise that’s gay-friendly approved by GayTravel.com. The latter is a trusted source for travel information for the gay community.

Grant Van Ulbrich, Director, Diversity & Inclusion, Royal Caribbean, also mentioned that they’ve put a lot of effort into ensuring the LGBT community feels safe in their cruises.

One thing they’ve done is running an education program for their international staff members. The program teaches on diversity and inclusion of the gay community and how to ensure they feel at home in their cruises.

Gay travelers who have used the cruising company say they felt a sense of belonging the moment they step on the cruise.

Is Cunard LGBT Friendly?

Most people use Cunard company when other lesbian cruises aren’t available, and they’re shocked by how much it’s underestimated.

Cunard has always been a human rights advocate, and that includes the rights of the LGBT Community.

Every once in a while, the cruise company organizes LBGT meetups and advertises them through its daily onboard newspaper.

group of friends drinking wine while traveling in a cruise

JR Pratts and his husband says that they were impressed by the experience they had with Cunard. He explained that they saw the LBGT social hour advertisement, and decided to attend. They thought it was a one-time thing, but the meetings kept happening every 5 pm.

The couple got to hang out with other members of the LGBT community, which made their vacation more colorful. JR Pratts also mentions that even when they were not in the meetings, they didn’t face any discrimination. You can check out their story; he shares his story in detail, including the food they ate.

Is Carnival Cruise LGBT Friendly?

This is another cruise company that comes to mind when people are looking to have amazing at-sea experiences.

Holidays in the carnival cruises are so good that you almost forget where you are. And to answer your question of whether it’s LGBT-friendly, it is, without a doubt.

Here, you’ll find happy gay couples getting married in official ceremonies and holding other symbolic LGBT events.

There are also gay and lesbians meet-ups in the cruise, popularly known as Friends of Dorothy meetups.

Carnival cruise has been recognized by the Corporate Equality Index (CEI) for five years. This is because of their LGBTQ equality policies as observed on their staff diversity and their strict discrimination policies against the LGBT community.

The cruise company has also been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the biggest LGBT civil rights organization in the US.

gay couple having a good time on a couch

Jerry Montgomery, chief human resources officer for Carnival Corporation, mentioned that they value diversity and inclusion of all cultures in their company. He explained that it’s through diversity that they’ve been able to differentiate themselves from other cruises.

Is Princess Cruises LGBT Friendly?

Princess cruises is another popular cruise line, and it’s famous almost like the Royal Caribbean cruise. Princess has friendly staff, and their signature Italian restaurant makes them even more impressive. This explains how Princess has managed to win the Best Cruise Line awards four years in a row.

Princess cruise may not have as many LGBT travelers as the first two suggestions, but they have many repeat gay customers. This means they’re doing something right.

Like other gay-friendly cruise lines, Princess also organizes and promotes LGBTQ meetups in their daily newspapers. They also hold other LBGT events, which has put them ahead of other cruises.

gay couple drinking coffee together

One of the best things about the Princess cruise is the ability to choose. You can either go for a new and bigger cruise with more people and entertainment. Or go for a small intimate vessel. Some LGBT travelers choose the latter and cruise with their tribe only, which gives them a sense of belonging.

Is Norwegian Cruise Line LGBT Friendly?

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is one of the world’s leading cruise lines. NCL is known for its inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. The company was founded in 1966, and it has been offering cruises to destinations all over the world ever since.

Is Celebrity Cruises LGBT Friendly?

Celebrity Cruises is one of the leading cruise lines in the world, and it is also one of the most LGBT-friendly. The company has strongly supported the LGBT community for many years. That’s why it is one of the most popular cruise lines with LGBT travelers.

The cruise line has been awarded the distinction of being the “Most Gay-Friendly Cruise Line” by Porthole Cruise Magazine for six years. It all starts with the company’s commitment to inclusion.

Celebrity Cruises welcomes all guests, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or other factors. The cruise line has worked hard to create an inclusive space onboard their ships. This may include training staff on LGBT sensitivity to offering special events and activities for LGBT passengers.

So if you’re looking for an LGBT-friendly cruise line, Celebrity Cruises is a great option. The company offers several great cruise options for LGBT travelers.

4 Best LGBT Cruises (Review)

Here are the cruises that should be on top of your list for your next vacation.

#1 VACAYA LGBT+ Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Millennium

If you’re contemplating about getting out of the closet, or you’re just not ready yet, but you’d love to be around your tribe, this is the cruise for you.

The community here is very friendly, and they believe, ‘love is love.’ Vacay is the first cruise to expand and address the whole LGBT spectrum. They are open and accepting of ALL couples, including asexual, pansexual, polyamorous couples and kinky couples. This is one place you can be yourself in the world with no judgment.

And when it comes to entertainment, Vacaya outdoes itself. People who have been on the cruise say that entertainment is the hidden VACAYA secret because it can’t be described. It can only be experienced.

VACAYA also supports all kinds of parties, including same-sex marriages, honeymoon, and anniversary parties.

The hosts are very friendly and responsive, and you get help whenever you need it.

I’m not exaggerating, but VACAYA is like a little heaven for the LGBTQ community from the reviews I’ve read.

Atlantis Events’ All-Gay Cruise

Atlantis Events is the world’s largest provider of all-gay cruises and resorts. Over 20 years of experience, Atlantis Events has hosted over 150,000 guests on cruises and resorts worldwide.

So why should you choose an Atlantis Events all-gay cruise or resort? There are many reasons! First, you’ll be surrounded by like-minded people who are all there to have a good time.

You’ll also have access to exclusive events and parties that you won’t find anywhere else. And, of course, you’ll be treated to the best in accommodations, dining, and entertainment. If you’re looking for an unforgettable vacation experience, an Atlantis Events all-gay cruise or resort is perfect!

Olivia Cruises

Olivia Cruises is one of the leading travel companies catering to the needs of the LGBTQ community. The company was started over five decades ago by Judy Dlugacz to provide safe and fun travel experiences for lesbians. Since then, Olivia has expanded its offerings to include cruises, resorts, and land tours for all members of the LGBTQ community.

#2 Azamara Cruises

This is another cruise that offers an inclusive experience for LGBT couples and singles.

Azamara cruises won Best Onboard LGBTQ Gatherings and Best Small-Ship Cruise Line for LGBTQ Passengers.

The staff is well-trained, and they’re genuinely comfortable around gay couples. When they tell you, ‘welcome on board, ‘ you can feel they mean it.

Dake & Mark used the cruise, and Dale wrote an extensive review of their experience. He mentions that the staff was so friendly, they even made an effort to know the names and taste of their guests. The bar attender nicknamed his boyfriend Mr. Phoenix and poured him his favorite cocktail every time he hit the bar (even without asking).

Azamara also holds several gay parties and meetups, but the community is generally friendly. The best part is that they schedule these meetings in good hours, so they don’t conflict with other activities. The food is also fresh, tasty, and of high quality; they use fresh ingredients, and you can see them preparing it.

#3 Atlantis

This is the most popular gay cruise company, and it has been since it was founded in 1991.

The Atlantis offers a fully customized experience for the LGBT community, and it’s among the best gay cruises in the world. They go all out in throwing parties; they ensure they have musicians, comedians, and drag queen performers. The cruise ensures they get the best of the LGBT community entertainers.

When it comes to hosting gay events, they throw unapologetic parties that allow you to bond and make friends.

Besides being one of the best gay-friendly cruises, their other services are top-notch. Their rooms are modern, with beautiful balconies to unwind. They have a 24-7 room service, which is very convenient.

Atlantis cruises also offer a chance for you to exercise your hobbies and learn new things. They organize art classes, wine tasting events, and many sports to learn for gym bunnies.

I really can’t sum up Atlantis’s experience on one blog post, but you can read more on Queer in the world .

#4 Aquafest Cruises for Gay and Lesbian Cruises

Aquafest has been offering travel services for almost 20 years now. Therefore, you can be sure that they know their stuff in terms of food, accommodation, and entertainment.

Aquafest is an excellent choice for gay couples who are cruising for the first time or those on a tight budget. The cruise offers big discounts to lesbian and gay couples.

Like other cruises we’ve reviewed, they host amazing gay events and parties. They also have great drag queens, comedians, and all sorts of entertainers who connect well with the audience.

If you love partying all night, you can enjoy the night parties that go all up to 5 am. And for those who love their sleep, there is nothing to worry about – the night parties are held in one room to ensure they don’t inconvenience you.

The staff is respectful, friendly, and very responsive. The cruise has done a great job to ensure the LGBT community feels comfortable in their cruises.

Final Thoughts

After days of waking up, going to work, dealing with traffic, and repeating the same the next day, you run out of energy. Once you start feeling this way, it’s time to take a break and go for a vacation.

One of the most popular and cheap vacations for gay couples is cruising. But you don’t want to go on just any other cruise. You want to ensure you use LGBTQ-friendly cruise lines. This will allow you to relax and take a break from all the daily negativity.

I hope my gay-friendly cruises suggestions were helpful, and you got an idea of what gay cruise lines you’d love to use.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the planning process, from choosing the right cruise to making the most of your time onboard.

Choosing the Right Cruise

  • Consider Your Preferences: Reflect on what you’re looking for in a cruise—whether it’s non-stop partying, cultural immersion, luxury pampering, or adventure activities. Different cruises cater to different interests and demographics within the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Research Cruise Lines: Look into various cruise lines and their offerings, focusing on those known for their LGBTQ+-friendly amenities, events, and itineraries.
  • Timing and Destination: Decide on your preferred timing and destination. Consider aligning your cruise with significant LGBTQ+ events or choosing off-peak times for a more relaxed experience.

Booking and Preparation

  • Understanding What’s Included: Familiarize yourself with what’s included in your cruise package (meals, entertainment, excursions) and what will be extra (alcohol, special activities).
  • Packing Essentials: Pack according to the destinations you’ll be visiting, the cruise’s theme nights, and any specific events. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, comfortable footwear, and formal wear if required.

Onboard Experience

  • Making Connections: Participate in onboard events and activities, especially those designed for the LGBTQ+ community, to meet fellow cruisers.
  • Stay Open and Flexible: While it’s good to have a plan, be open to spontaneity. Some of the best cruise experiences come from unexpected opportunities and new friendships.

Health and Safety on Gay Cruises

Ensuring the health and safety of all passengers is a top priority for gay cruises, just as it is for any travel experience.

Given the unique needs and concerns of the LGBTQ+ community, gay cruises often go the extra mile in creating a secure and welcoming environment.

Here’s what you need to know about staying healthy and safe while enjoying the voyage of a lifetime.

Health Precautions

  • Vaccinations and Medical Check-ups: Before embarking, check the recommended vaccinations for your destinations and ensure you’re up to date. A pre-travel medical check-up can provide peace of mind.
  • Onboard Medical Facilities: Familiarize yourself with the medical services available on board. Most ships are equipped with medical centers that can handle a range of health issues.
  • Mental Health: The excitement of a cruise can be overwhelming for some. Cruise lines often provide resources and support for travelers facing mental health challenges, ensuring a supportive environment for all.
  • Sexual Health: Given the social nature of cruises, some offer access to sexual health services, including information, protection, and sometimes even testing, acknowledging and respecting the needs of their passengers.

Safety Tips

  • Stay Informed: Attend the safety drills and briefings provided at the beginning of your cruise. Familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout, particularly the location of emergency exits and assembly stations.
  • Be Aware of Local Laws and Customs: When visiting international ports, it’s crucial to be aware of and respect local laws and customs, especially in countries with restrictive laws regarding LGBTQ+ rights.
  • Buddy System: Especially when disembarking at ports, consider exploring in groups or pairs. Not only is it safer, but it also enhances the experience.
  • Protect Your Belongings: Use safes for valuables and be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded public areas or on excursions.

Understanding Your Rights

  • LGBTQ+ Rights on Board: Familiarize yourself with the cruise line’s policies regarding discrimination and harassment. Knowing the process for reporting any issues is essential for your comfort and safety.
  • Embassy Contacts: For international cruises, have the contact information for your country’s embassy or consulate in the destinations you’ll visit. They can be invaluable resources in case of legal trouble or emergencies.

Travel Insurance

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Opt for travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. Some policies also offer specific coverage for LGBTQ+ travelers.
  • COVID-19 Considerations: In the current landscape, ensure your travel insurance covers COVID-19-related issues, including quarantine costs and medical treatment.

While the primary goal of a gay cruise is to offer an unforgettable and joyous experience, the health and safety of passengers and crew remain paramount.

By taking the necessary precautions and staying informed, you can fully enjoy the freedom, camaraderie, and adventure that gay cruises provide, all while feeling secure and respected.

Whether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what’s right for them.)

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

“[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences,” says Gunn. “The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there’s more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn’t always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment.”

Note that VACAYA’s cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA’s voyages, highlighting the company’s responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board.

The 11-night Antarctica expedition on Atlas Ocean Voyages’ World Navigator in December 2024 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships’ gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

“Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong,” the cruise line says in a statement on its website. “It’s an important time for us — both internally within our crew and for our sailors — to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included.”

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain’s Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

Atlantis Events

The world’s largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations.

“As an LGBTQ cruiser, you’re looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events,” says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. “One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you’ll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship.”

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company’s customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company’s popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Brand g Vacations

Specializing in all-gay river cruises — and now luxury ocean liners — Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world.

Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you’re looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly’s Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity’s signature Pride Party at Sea and more.

Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships’ lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia’s specialized programs. There are group and solo traveler meetups, as well as programs like Sisters, which is for LGBTQ women of color; Gen-O, for cruisers 40 and younger; Women in Uniform gatherings, for veterans and those currently in the armed forces; and events for OWLs (which stands for “older, wiser lesbians”). Past cruisers on Olivia’s voyages report feeling a true sense of community and belonging on board, resulting in a fun, carefree trip.

In June 2024, set sail with Olivia from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin on Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend. Or, visit the islands of Tahiti on the line’s Star Breeze in September.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships’ entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical “Mamma Mia!”) and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title “Gay Traveler Approved” from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. “Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches,” says Martinez.

According to past cruisers, if you’re looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence — French for “the madness” — primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries — which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations — as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Enjoy unique events like drag bingo, high heel runs and more.

La Demence sails every summer to European destinations like Greece, Italy and Malta. The 2023 cruise was chartered on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas.

The company’s cruises in 2024 include a seven-night Galápagos sailing in late September on a Relais & Chateau luxury yacht: Ecoventura’s new ship, Evolve. The intimate ship accommodates just 20 passengers. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways’ Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. This ocean cruise scheduled in August is chartered on Star Clippers’ masted sailing ship, Royal Clipper.

Celebrity Not So Gay Friendly

Cool Cruiser

Celebrity Solstice Transatlantic Crossing 11/03/09-12/13/09

I’ll start this letter out by saying I have travels multiple times with Celebrity and this is the first time I have had to speak my mind about the service irregularities with this cruise line.

Let me say, I and my traveling acquaintances were humiliated by the actions of employees of Celebrity/Royal Caribbean which struck us as something we though would never happen with this company. I am a gay man as were my friends whom this incident happened to and from all our past experiences with this company we know of no other cruise line that is so gay friendly and has welcomed us with such open arms.

Every evening from the start of the cruise out of Rome my friends and I would sit in the pool-side hot tubs with a cocktail and laugh and reflect on the day’s journey. On the evening of December 9th, while sitting in the hot tub as we have done for days before, we noticed security guards hovering on the deck above the pool area, talking on their radios. We did not think too much of it until one of the guards approached the tub in which we were seated and told us we were not allowed to be consuming alcohol while in the hot tub.

We were dumb struck about this statement as we had been doing the same thing since the beginning of the cruise and were never approached, and the stated rules on the side of the hot tub said nothing of the sort, and from previous cruises on Celebrity there were no such restrictions.

The security guard would not take no for an answer and confiscated our drinks. We then noticed that we were singled out as in the other three hot tubs were a single gentleman, a woman and a man, and two straight couples all of whom had alcoholic drinks. We walked over to the security guard who had confiscated our drinks and asked why they were allowed to be drinking in the tubs and we were not. He refused to give us an answer.

Recognizing we were singled out because we were gay men, I immediately said to my friends we need to head to the manager of guest relations. We spoke with Simona Stumberger Guest Relations Manager and Miguel Cunha Assistant Guest Relations Manger and reported what had just happened. She noted that she was not aware of any such alcohol restrictions, took all of our room numbers, and said she would investigate the situation and would get back with us.

We informed Simona and Miguel that some of us involved in this incident had traveled with Celebrity on many occasions and some of us had traveled on the Atlantis Events gay cruises and had never experienced such treatment and humiliation.

The next day, 12/10/09 we all received a message that Simona and Miguel would like to meet with us at 5:30pm to discuss the situation. Before this meeting, some of my friends decided to go back to the pool-side hot tubs and have a cocktail. The same situation which befell us the previous day happened again to them. They were told they could not be drinking in the hot tub and their drinks were confiscated and no other guests in the other hot tubs were given the same restrictions.

We met with Simona and Miguel that day at 5:30pm and she said the situation was dealt with. We said ‘that is interesting as it just happened again not more than one hour before this meeting’. Simona and Miguel looked at each other and were visibly upset and embarrassed. They could not say anything other than they had met with the head of security and discussed the situation and the security guard who confiscated the drinks was spoken to and the situation would be resolved with his training. After informing them it happened again this time with a different guard they said they would investigate further and get back with us.

Let me at this time point out a few things. The friends I was with had varied professional backgrounds. A few are flight attendants with American Airlines, a few flight attendants with Delta Airlines, and one of them is a guest relations manager with Delta Airlines who deals with situations exactly like the one we were experiencing.

Since these gentlemen were involved with the service industry, they chose to go the route of asking for compensation from Celebrity Cruise Line for the embarrassment and humiliation they underwent. I on the other hand approached the situation in the manner of a search for equality, understanding, and a search for a public apology. In other words, my hand was not stretched out asking for compensation, it was out stretched in search of truth, equality, and looking to the future to make sure this situation would never again happen.

Simona and Miguel contacted us individually on 12/11/09. As expected, Celebrity offered everything from a single complementary dinner at one of their specialty restaurants to ship-board credit for drinks to $100-$200 ship-board credit on a future cruise. Some of my traveling acquaintances opted for the ship-board credits for the future cruises. When I was approached by Miguel and asked what could be done for me, I asked for a written apology from Celebrity and a statement that proper company rules would be followed in the future and proper diversity training would be stepped up. Celebrity refused. I then asked for at least Simona and Miguel to join us at the martini bar where all the gay men gather each evening and buy those of us involved with the issue a drink and apologize in public. Celebrity refused.

Miguel asked why I would not accept a ship-board credit for a future cruise on Celebrity. I stated the only way I would ever get on another Celebrity ship would be through the Atlantic Events cruises and that I would never go on another straight cruise. All I’m really looking for is an apology and correction.

It struck me odd that I feel I need to segregate myself to feel comfortable with who I am by only allowing myself this freedom when on an all gay cruise such as with Atlantis Events. Having sailed with Celebrity multiple times in the past, I always took pride in recommending Celebrity to all my friends and family. Each time I would finish a trip on a Celebrity ship I always had praise for the crew and company. Now, I seem to be at a cross road with my opinion regarding this company.

Therefore, unless Celebrity Cruise Line or its parent company Royal Caribbean steps forward with a pubic apology and acknowledge proper diversity training will be stepped up, it is my opinion and suggestion that the gay community do not put any further money into this company. Seeing as this would be a near impossibility to tell someone gay not to take a cruise vacation, I then suggest only using the services of such companies as Atlantis Events for your cruise vacations. If we are going to be segregated, we might as well be segregated with people whom share our common cause of unity and equality.

I must point out that gays spend a LOT of money on cruise ships from the copious amounts of alcohol consumed to the spa treatments to the excursions and to the amount we tip our servers. Ask any crew member who has been on an Atlantis Events cruise and they will tell you they can not wait for their gays to return! Miguel was asked by our group in this incident to examine our on-board accounts. Needless to say, the expression in his voice was one of surprise how much we gay men spend. And as most frequent cruise travelers are away, the cruise lines don’t make their money from selling cabins, they make their money from all the other ship-board amenities.

This was my first vacation in seven years. It’s rather odd for me to think that I had to use my very hard-earned money to be treated in such a manner. I was humiliated publicly. I request a public apology. Until that happens, I will take my business elsewhere and so should you.

Alan - Your story disheartens me about Celebrity. I was on the March Atlantis Solstice Cruise and had a wonderful experience with Celebrity. I have never sailed RCI on a hetero cruise. With that said I believe what you were seeking was more than fair and just. Maybe the public apology part was going too far for them (because another customer might get offended that they might be seen catering to the gay group onboard), however, an apology of sorts from the cruise line for what happened should be given. If the only time Celebrity can treat us with equality is exclusivity of an all-gay charter then I do agree with you that the money is better spent elsewhere.

As a side note I would recommend Norwegian Cruise Line to you for your future hetero sailings. While RCI seems to be going in the wrong direction lately catering to gays on their hetero cruises NCL is going in the other direction and bending over backwards to get the gay dollars onboard their ships (or so have my experiences been lately).

I'm happy that you and your friends went to the extent as to make the situation known onboard and to seek out a response and fix the situation. I must say Celebrity's handling of the situation (especially a repeat performance by a different security guard) was less than stellar.

Schplinky

I wonder if the issue for them was a legal one. Having a written or public apology could be seen as evidence in a legal discrimination suit. While it's unfortunate that people and businesses can't just apologize when they screw up, it seems increasingly that they can't admit wrong-doing so formally and go the way of compensation these days. I also suspect, given that the managers involved seemed to be trying to resolve the problem and were surprised when it recurred, that training is indeed happening now and that the person may not be still employed.

While I do not want to diminish the unfortunate incidents that occurred to the OP and his friends, I do want to emphasize that the treatment of GLBT cruisers on that particular sailing was not all in the same vain.

As a one of the cruisers on the Solstice TA, I would have to say that I have never seen MORE Gay men on a non-chartered cruise than on this TA (20 cruises & counting, BTW). There seems to have been several gay groups on board, and as the OP stated, 8pm at the Martini Bar, packed with overflowing gay men, seemed more like a gay bar than a cruise ship venue.

It should also be noted that there are many of the cruise staff that were 'family', and that I personally was never mistreated by either cruise staff or any of the passengers, for that matter.

All in all, I had an excellent time, and the Solstice is truely the most beautiful ship on the sea.

Now if they can only do something about those small stateroom closets and that HORRIBLE spa set-up, the ship would be PERFECT!!!

patseacruiser

I would assume that you will not get a public written apology because that would be admitting liability. Even if you go through Atlantis they are still hiring Celebrity so Celebrity is still getting your money no matter how you look at it. The poster above about NCL might be what you are looking for. The Courtyard Villas and Suites would be a wonderful 'private' area for you and your friends and I'm sure you'd enjoy it. I am disheartened to hear of this with Celebrity because as a member of IGLTA I would not want to offend any of my gay/lesbian clients if Celebrity is taking this stance.

JSnow789

Were any of the drinks you were consuming in glass containers? Beer bottles or wine glasses? If that was the case then they will ask you to either leave the hot tub or hand over the drink-and rightly so.

I'm just thinking that it might have been a language thing-they said 'no alcohol' when in fact they really should have said 'no glass'.

Just a thought. While RCI is not as gay friendly as I've heard other lines are-I've never been singled out or treated differently. My last cruise had a straight overly macho CD-but he was still ok.

JSNOW789 - good point about the glass. I hope that is the case.

quepaquete

I was on the cruise prior to the OP. Had such a good time and had excellent service. Except for the first evening at the Mollecular Bar, when the bartender seemed to ignor us for a while. We asked for service and he helped us, then. The following evening he was fine with all of us.

Friends of Dorothy meetings are held at the Mollecular bar every evening at 8:00 PM.

I talked to many of the servers (at restaurant and bars) and they were all very gay friendly and were looking forward to having another Atlantis cruise.

Sorry the OP had such an unfortunate experience and that would leave a bad taste, but I plan to cruise Celebrity.

crusinmama06

crusinmama06

That is exactly what I was wondering. And I am hoping that was the case. I would hate to think that Celebrity security set out to discriminate against the OP. :(

This is not good to hear. I just booked a cruise with Celebrity

Drinking alchol in a hot tub can be dangerous. The following is from an article on hot tub safety:

The combination of heat and alcohol can lead to catastrophes. Modern hot tubs can be heated to a maximum of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat expands the blood vessels and increases the body's temperature. Alcohol also expands the blood vessels and increases the body's temperature. The combination may be too much for your body to take, raising your temperature to so high that it results in a stroke or heart attack.

This would be a liability for any cruise line, spa or hotel. I don't think any of them would allow it.

Tuscon Rick - I also thought by some hot tub once I remember a sign about not drinking alcohol with the heat, however, if the others in the hot tub were allowed their alcoholic drinks - then who knows. I just hope that it's not the case of discrimination. It would be the first time I have heard of it. In fact, usually Celebrity is one of the ones I recommend. I have a cousin who is gay and likes to cruise with friends (small group) and I recommend Celebrity to him every time.

Wineguys

Celebrity's hot tubs are NOT kept at a dangerous temperature. They are between 99 and 100 degrees.

It is entertaining to watch people get out of the hot tub after drinking heavily.

Hi Anthony,

Ben and I enjoyed meeting you and Robert on board very much. Please keep in touch with us for future sailings. I too agree that the incident was unfortunate and I did see security really watching everyone extra close on this cruise. However, my partner and I had nothing but a great time! I would highly recommend Celebrity to anyone--gay or straight. The martini bar at night was always filled with activity and the only gay comment I heard from one of the passengers was..."Those gays know how to dress." : )

GayCrewmember

I work on board with Celebrity Cruises. I have passed on your story to the Miami Headquarters office. I know that on board issues may sometimes not be relayed to HQ. This actually got me worked up as well. I am so very sorry at how you were treated and I hope something gets resolved about it. In the meantime keep in touch with me. My email is [email protected] I will email you if I hear anything back from Miami.

I'm an avid Celebrity Fan (Elite Member) and sailed on the Solstice last November when it first set sail. In any case, I had an great experience and often felt the Martini Bar was a gay bar back on land. The staff were always accommodating and towards the end of the cruise the staff practically saved an area for us each night where we all could congregate. We also had several crew members from the show share drinks with us, as well as the Cruise Director.

Prior to that, we sailed some Caribbean itineraries and also a westbound TA on the Connie. In any case, we've always had a great time and have felt both passengers and crew have been very warm and welcoming.

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience but hope you'll give them another opportunity to see that this may have been an isolated incident on your cruise. The Solstice Class of ships are so beautiful to not enjoy!

Celebrity met with you and your friends and offered a fair and reasonable form of "compensation" which your friends accepted.......but it wasn't good enough for you........... what could be done for me.........:rolleyes::rolleyes:

You will never see a "written apology" or a "public apology". Simona and Miguel listened to you....believed you and offered a fair compensation.......you should have accepted it.

A very unfortunate situation for the OP. I'm sorry their cruise experience was ruined and that Celebrity may have lost a fan.

It does sound to me as though there could have been other issues at play that only made this seem discrimnatory. I hope that is the case.

We are loyal Celebrity cruisers (as you can tell by the screen name ;) ). In the 12 years we've been sailing with Celebrity not once have we been singled out for discrimination nor have we ever felt unwelcomed. Quite the contrary! If that were the policy of the cruise line, I doubt we would have been honored with dinner at the Captain's table this past September.

In your opinion. Obviously the OP feels differently.

The thread on the Celebrity Forum has been reinstated, but closed to discussion.

Let's keep this one up and running. No need to state the obvious, simply your perspective, experience and/or opinion.

Personally I think this thread has valuable information.

We were just on the Solstice TA. They could not be more gay friendly. Aquafest had a group on board and they took over the martini bar most nights. The straights on board seemed to get along really well. The crew were the best. The Solstice is the most beautiful ship afloat. Celebrity has always been very nice to us and I for one will always sail with them. They are #1!!!

I just returned from the Carnival Sensation and was provided a table aside the whirl pool to place my glass drink. First time I ever encountered such a request. I was with gay and straight people in the whirl pool and it was an issue of th glass being in the whirl pool, not the drink. They went out of their way to accommodate everyone with a whirl pool side table for their drink.

I suspect they were afraid of the legal liability for providing a written apology. Just curious, my gay friends and I get kind of crazy and loud when we drink (and some of them are also professionals also) - is it possible that your group may have been enjoying the party a bit more than the people in the other whirl pool?
