I'm considering booking the 'Caravans in the Sand' shore excursion when my ship stops in Alexandria. If anyone has been on it I would appreciate your feedback. There are two others that go into Cario--I think one is call Medieval Cario and the other Pyramids & the River Nile.

I took this excursion in 2007 when I was sailing on Legend of the Seas (RCCL) - I'm pretty sure the =X= excursion is the same. Here's what I posted last time somebody asked:

We stopped in Alexandria in May, and took the "caravans in the sands" ship tour. Normally I'm a "private tour" kinda guy, but knowing how far away Cairo was I wanted to be sure that the ship wouldn't leave without us if there was a problem. We were off the ship very early, and as you noted rode in a caravan of busses on the long trip to Cairo. From time to time, the guide would narrate about what we were seeing, or about Egypt in general. There was a restroom on the bus, and water was provided. The Visas were all handled by the ship without our intervention.

Everything we saw, with the exception of the final "papyrus institute" fluff shopping stop, was great. My only regret is that there was so much packed into the day that we were really rushed from place to place. We were on a very tight schedule and had to really keep moving to stay to it. In hindsight, I would drop one or two sights to get more time at the others. The desert caravan and camel ride was actually a lot of fun (we got a bit jostled in the caravan, but it was entertaining), and the meal at the "country club" was surprisingly good.

The weather was brutally hot. Except during the caravan and camel ride, the busses were always running and available if you wanted to cool off.

We got back to the ship very late (long after early dinner), but the dining room was kind enough to accommodate our late arrival (we had late dinner, but were late even to that) - we were stinky, dirty and sweaty so we showered and changed before heading down and they were very accommodating.

All in all I'd say the tour was fantastic, with the caveat that I think we tried to do too much in one day. I never worried at all about being a "target" as there were busses of tourists everywhere, and the major sights were literally bursting at the seams with people so it's not like we stood out (quite the opposite, it was sometimes hard to find our bus in the sea of other busses).

The worst part about the trip was not the travel, but the EXTREME aggressiveness of the trinket vendors. For people not accustomed to being literally constantly bombarded with offers to buy, it can be off-putting. The vendors will literally hound you and follow you, some going so far as to actually put products in your hands (I had one fellow rest something on my crossed arms) and then chase you down for payment. Any offer of assistance (photos, directions, information - anything), no matter how genuine appearing, will result in a demand for payment later. One member of our group was actually barred from exiting the sphinx by men demanding money (they got out without paying but it was frightening for them). I understand that these people are very poor and just trying to make a living, and in fact I got some fantastic trinkets from them (far better prices than the papyrus "institute"/store), but forewarned is forearmed.

Would I do it again? Absolutely, though I might choose a tour with fewer stops. I was exhausted by the end of the day.

Other people have already commented on their private tour experiences so I won't go into that. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time no matter what you choose.

Thank you for your reply and for pointing me in the direction of the other posts regarding the Caravans in the Sands excursion. I'm taking a Athens to Singapore cruise on Azamara and there just isn't much activity on the Azamara boards, which is why I tried Celebrity. I never thought to look under Ports of Call.

I really enjoyed your pictures, I saw several shots I'd like to duplicate, which will give me time to just look and enjoy, as you suggest.

Can i drink tap water in Egypt?

The high season for tourism is all year with winter and spring being peak season for cultural travels with lots of sightseeing. Weather in Egypt is perfect for many kinds of tourism, and if coming in June, July, and August, head for the seaside resorts. Those months are very warm with temperatures that can reach around 45C. and the humidity is about 70 to 80%, but it is bearable with the sea and large swimming pools nearby. So the period of the high summer season is also a bit busy as hotels fill up with tourists from all over the world looking for a bargain, lots of sunshine, diving, snorkeling, etc. It is also a primary vacation time in Europe. If you come in the deep summer season you can still enjoy it because you can always sightsee early in the morning and go again at night when the sunsets. You will definitely need good sunscreen and a lot of liquids to drink with a nice hat on your head. Summer is a good time for people looking for good rates in accommodation and other services.

What is the dress code in Egypt?

Egypt is a Muslim country and the dress code is towards the conservative side, especially for women. That being said, we are used to seeing travelers from all over the world. My suggestion would be to wear light clothes and not to wear short shorts, short skirts and alike to avoid the occasional unwanted stare. But it's really up to you. When you visit religious places (synagogues, churches, and mosques) you do need to cover your shoulders and wear over the knee dresses, if you are planning to wear one of course. If you plan to attend the Nile dinner cruise, there is no need for formal wear unless you want to make that night a special night! Also, you will be sharing this experience with other travelers so you can dress however you feel most comfortable.

How to get visa to visit Egypt?

You can get your visa when you arrive at Cairo Airport. It is an easy process for USA, UK, Canadian, Australian and European citizens. The visa is simply a stamp (like a mail or postage stamp) that you buy from the visa office, at the port of entry just before the immigration booth. The visa will cost you $25 US Dollars and after buying it; you just stick it on any empty page on your passport. Once you have bought your visa you then stand in line to get your passport stamped by the immigration officer. You can also apply for E-Visa via the official electronic visa portal: www.visa2egypt.gov.eg

How many days in Egypt is enough?

Your Egypt Tours travel agency recommends two weeks so that you can enjoy the temples and tombs of Luxor and Aswan, explore the sights of Cairo, and relax in the Red Sea islands and nature reserves.

What is the best Nile River cruise?

There are many Nile cruises. Not to name one but your choice depends on many things to put in mind such as the number of nights you want to spend on the cruiser, your budget, and the standard of the Nile cruise. We recommend you choose a 5-star luxury Nile cruise, and if you are looking for a private Nile River cruise you can choose Dahabiya cruises, it is only for the small-group tour, about 15 people. Most cruises have. There is another way of cruising the Nile, which is the Felucca boat. It is traditional and charming but it is cheap as long as it will be ok to sleep on the deck exposed to mosquitos and most of these boats do not have a toilet

We did a private overnight in Cairo with 6 others using Memphis Tours. I think it was around $200 a person including the hotel. Look at the port boards to get more info. We felt safe. Just don't drink the water unless it is bottled and sealed. We got sick!

Not done these trips from Alexandria but in my experience, you don't want to spend more than a day in Cairo wheras Luxor especially a Nile cruise for a week fantastic- more than enough to see. My advise do Cairo in a day and come back later to do Luxor for a week!!!!!

I agree with the post above. We Did the day trip last year to Cairo. We did it with the excursion from the equinox. If you can get a private tour I would because we had 17mins at the Pyramids where you could go inside one, 30 mins for people who wanted to have a ride on a camel and over 1hour at the shop. Apart from that the trip was really good. If you do a private tour you will be able to choose what you would like to visit.

for the price of the trip to Luxor you could get a weeks holiday staying there.

We've done the overland to Cairo from Alexandria and this time we are doing the Luxor flight. Hard to say at this point but it was wonderful when we took the land tour, 4 hours on the roads but you get to see lots of the people and how they live, I guess that would and was be my first choice. Lovely lunch and stayed in first rate hotel, dinner on the Nile cruise (not very classy) but people were so friendly everywhere in Cairo and your first glimpse of the Pyramids as you drive is THRILLING!

Here 3-4 yrs. ago on ship. One persons opinion; Cairo is big dirty 3rd world country. Only thing I liked was Cairo Museum and camel jockeys racing each other by Pyramids. Folks who went on overnites were mostly disappointed.

We were on the Azamara Journey in Nov. and did a private overnight tour from Alexandria to Cairo with Ramses tours. They were fabulous and we felt very safe because of our tour guide. Many people from our cruise booked through Ramses and all were very pleased. Would do it again in a heartbeat.:)

I agree. You will see sooo much more with a private tour company, and it is hard to fit everything in in 2 days. Accommodations will be 4-5 star in Cairo/Giza.

One day is not enough. The drive to Giza is about 3 hours from Alexandria.

Yes, Cairo is a third world city. 26,000,000 people. An eye opener.

One of the most interesting places I have visited.

Many years ago, my wife and I did an Eastern Mediterranean cruise that included two nights in Alexandria.

Day 1 was spend in Cairo. If you've never seen the pyramids, they are an amazing site. However, Cairo itself is nothing special. It's a large, dirty, nondescript city with not much else to do beyond the pyramids and the Cairo museum.

Day 2 was probably the best travel experience my wife and I have experienced. We flex to Luxor and visited the Valley of the Kings (tombs of the pharoahs), the temple to Queen Hatshepsut and Karnak. The day was magical, almost spirtual. To experience the history, the traditional Egypt and Nile, that you learned about in school as a child was beyond words. We have travelled extensively but this day is number one in our travel experience.

If you had to choose only 1, pick the tour to Luxor.

Ramses is excellent

We took the day trip from Alexandria to Cairo for around 70 per person. Sooooo much cheaper and better because we got to pick the itinerary.

Skip the oil shop. Other than that it is great. Best value if you join a roll call board and get a group together. Our Ramses tour guide was one of the best guides we've ever had. What fun.

Don't take the ship tour if you can avoid it. Way overpriced.

I am on the Equinox in Oct and considering Memphis Tours.

Both trips have so much to offer, but I agree with holsagain - there is just to much to see on the Luxor trip to do in less than a week. We took a five day cruise on the Nile and even that was not enough time to admire and appreciate what there was to see and experience. I would save that for a time when you have more time.

Cairo offers one of the seven wonders of the ancient world in the Pyramid of Giza, the Spinx, King Tut's treasures in the museum - which would take a couple of days to fully appreciate - and much more.

Which ever one you choose you will see marvelous things. Enjoy

Overnight in cairo is only option too much travel otherwise. Pick a private tour company - they all do similar packages. But stand your ground with your itinerary - if you want no shopping, as we did say so, and stick to it. They all will try to stop somewhere. They tried to corral us into a perfurm factory to which we said NO and left.

We are also going on a Celebrity cruise to the E Med and were faced with the same decision. I've always wanted to visit the Valley of the Kings. One of our roll call members attempted to to set up an overnight to Luxor but he was unsuccessful. Another person on our roll call set up a great overnight to Cairo, which is much cheaper than the ship's excursion. We decided to sign up for the ship's overnight in Luxor which, although pricey, gives us the opportunity to see both the Valley of the Kings and what Cairo has to offer. We do not expect to visit Egypt again so we want to see as much as possible on this cruise.

If the $1,000 option includes both Cairo & Luxor..... go for it. Both are truly spectacular.

If not, it's a tough choice....but I would go with Luxor. Cairo is a dirty, congested ugly city but the pyramids, Sphinx & Egyptian Museum are Great. Going inside the pyramids is an "I can't believe where I am" experience, but it has no painting or the decorations of the Luxor underground tombs.

Luxor's tombs are spectacular and the Karnack temple is magnificant.

See it all if you can because both Cairo & Luxor are "once in a lifetime" experiences. If you see both it's $1,000 well spent!

I spent 8 days in Egypt. The Cairo Museum contains the bulk of the King Tut exhibits including the famous sarcophagus. The Sphinx was a bit of a disappointment but the Pyramids were impressive. We toured Memphis and Sakkara seeing several lesser known pyramids along the way. Also wonderful. We flew to Luxor and agree the temples are breathtaking in their scope. The Valley of the Kings was interesting enough. We also flew down to Abu Simbel (very, very cool!) and saw the Aswan Dam. Also saw Edfu and Kom Ombo which are also very impressive. All that followed by a Nile River cruise back towards Cairo and numerous stops along the way. Egypt is best seen on a land tour and at least a weeks time.
