The Magnificent Mile is home to numerous high-end clothing retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s. You can stroll along this iconic street and indulge in some serious retail therapy while admiring the city’s stunning architecture.

Oak Street, on the other hand, is a luxury haven. It hosts a concentration of upscale brand boutiques including Hermès, Jimmy Choo, and Prada. As you wander through Oak Street, you’ll find yourself in awe of the opulence surrounding you.

Q5: What makes these flagship stores special?

These flagship stores are special because they offer much more than just products for sale; they provide an immersive experience that sets them apart from regular retail stores. For example, the Nike store on Michigan Avenue boasts a basketball court where aspiring athletes can test out their skills. The Apple flagship store features an open plaza for workshops and events that foster creativity among customers.

Moreover, many flagship stores feature unique architectural designs that make them Instagram-worthy attractions in their own right. It’s not uncommon to see people striking poses outside a beautiful storefront or snapping pictures against stunning backdrops—a testament to how these stores have become destinations themselves!

Q6: Are there any advantages to shopping at flagship stores?

Absolutely! One significant advantage is exclusivity. Flagship store locations often carry limited-edition items or collections that are unavailable anywhere else—giving shoppers the chance to own something truly unique and sought after.

Additionally, flagship stores often have dedicated customer service teams ready to go above and beyond for their visitors. Knowledgeable staff members are on hand to provide personalized recommendations and answer any questions you may have about the brand or its products.

In conclusion, Chicago’s flagship stores offer an extraordinary shopping experience like no other. From luxurious boutiques on Oak Street to iconic brands lining The Magnificent Mile – every avid shopper will find something exciting waiting for them in this vibrant city. So why wait? Grab your wallet and prepare yourself for a shopping adventure filled with lavish designs, exclusive collections, and unforgettable memories. Happy shopping!

Room & Board

Although Room & Board has other Chicago-area locations and stores in New York, San Francisco, and LA, its multilevel downtown showroom is still worth checking out. The company offers well-made pieces with a timeless, midcentury-inspired vibe. With so many sizes, colors, and finishes to choose from, you should be able to find (or custom) order the exact piece you need.

The Golden Triangle

Stepping into the Golden Triangle in the historic Reid Murdoch building is like taking a trip to a faraway land. Lit by paper lanterns and featuring furniture, artifacts, and even entire ornately carved wood walls imported from the Far East and Europe, this large downtown showroom is a truly immersive experience.

This summer, Knoll moved out of the Merchandise Mart into this stunning Fulton Market showroom designed in collaboration with global architecture firm Gensler. Although the company specializes in many commercial brands more suited to trendy office space, the colorful Instagram-ready spot is a great spot to get some inspiration—just make sure to call for an appointment ahead of time.

Modern Classics Furniture

Although primarily an online retailer, Modern Classics Furniture offers a physical showroom to display its custom-made pieces inspired by the iconic designs of the Bauhaus, midcentury modern, and Scandinavian modern movements. The downtown space, located in Michigan Avenue’s Fine Arts Building, overlooks the Art Institute and Millennium Park and is worth stopping by if you seek the timeless appeal of 20th century modernism.

57st. Design

57st. Design focuses on contemporary wood pieces including tables, bed frames, dressers, and more. The company traces its roots back 30 years to when its founder began building bookcases out of a small garage on 57th Street in Hyde Park (hence the name). The company designs, manufactures, and sells all of its products in-house and operates a showroom in an old warehouse along Cermak Road on Chicago’s Lower West Side.

New Age Chicago Furniture

Since 1910, this South Side retailer provides a decent selection of traditional and contemporary pieces at reasonable prices. While perhaps not as trendy as some of the other boutiques on the list, the family-run business offers plenty of financing options for its customers—including individuals with less-than-perfect credit histories. And the shop’s large neon sign is a neighborhood landmark along South Cottage Grove Avenue.

Modern Cooperative Hyde Park

Modern Cooperative—or Modco for short—started off in Pilsen before opening this Hyde Park location, which has served as a popular shopping destination along 53rd Street since 2015. The boutique has a little bit of everything, including new contemporary furniture as well as refurbished classics from the 1960s and 70s. If you want to check out the South Side shop, you better do so soon. Its owners intend to close the store by the end of April and relocate to Dallas, Block Club Chicago reports.

Geek stuff in Chicago

Chicago comic book stores

1.  Chicago comic book stores

  • Arts, crafts & hobbies

For graphic novel readers, tabletop gamers or collectible fanatics, comic book stores are the cornerstone of Chicago's geekiest communities. No matter what neighborhood you live in, you're probably near a shop that stocks the latest titles and some intriguing back issues. Dig through trades at Chicago Comics, engage in a discussion at Challengers or browse a selection DIY zines at Quimby's—wherever you go, you're sure to find some new reading material.

Comic book conventions in Chicago

2.  Comic book conventions in Chicago

  • Things to do
  • Conventions

Fandom is alive and well in Chicago, and you'll see it in action at some of the city's top conventions. Meet actors from The Walking Dead at Walker Stalker Con, admire the intricate cosplayers at C2E2 or embrace your inner otaku at Anime Central. No matter which convention hall you queue up in, you'll find mountains of merchandise, interesting panels, some free swag and probably a few new friends who share your interests.

Chicago arcade bars

3.  Chicago arcade bars

You've probably been to a dive bar with a single pinball machine, but some of Chicago's most exciting bars house entire arcades. Since appearing in neighborhoods like Wicker Park and Logan Square, arcade bars have become a citywide phenomenon. Whether you want to set a new Donkey Kong high score or shoot some aliens while drinking craft beer, you can waste quarters on something other than laundry at one of Chicago's top arcade bars.

Killer Queen at Logan Arcade

4.  Killer Queen at Logan Arcade

  • Logan Square
  • price 1 of 4

A gigantic arcade cabinet in the back of this Logan Square arcade bar turns the idea of a solitary video game experience on its head, requiring not two, not four, but 10 players. Killer Queen pits two teams of five against one another in a bee colony–themed duel of resource collection, combat and snail riding (seriously). It's fascinating to watch skilled players face off against each other, but it's also fairly easy to pick up (just bring along some friends).

Adler After Dark

5.  Adler After Dark

  • Science and technology
  • Museum Campus

The Adler Planetarium knows how to convince geeks to visit Museum Campus; on the third Thursday of every month, the museum throws a 21-plus theme party that draws on pop culture. Previous events have featured activities and programming inspired by nerd-approved movies and TV shows such as  Star Wars, Star Trek and Firefly . With a beverage in your hand, learn a bit more about the galaxy we call home, as well as the ones far, far away.

Mass VR

6.  Mass VR

  • Arcades and amusements

Strap on a virtual reality headset and square off against your friends on a digital battlefield at Mass VR, which turns a nondescript warehouse into a sci-fi arena. The 6,000 square-foot arena allows up to eight players to move around a real-world space while shooting virtual lasers, grenades and rockets at each other in a game called  VR Champions . Players spend about 30 minutes in the virtual world during each session—we're pretty sure this is the future of video games.

Nakama Toys

7.  Nakama Toys

  • Toys and games

Filled with shelf after shelf of sculpted plastic paraphernalia imported from Japan, this Logan Square shop is a destination for any anime fan, video gamer or manga maniac. Each week brings a new shipment of character statues, capsule toys and Gundam model kits, including merch from popular franchises like Attack on Titan and Neon Genesis Evangelion . Don’t have room for any more collectors’ items? Stock up on sweets from overseas, including Pocky, green tea–flavored Japanese Kit Kats and other sugary treats.

The 3D Printer Experience

8.  The 3D Printer Experience

  • River North

Want to finally realize your dream of being turned into a collectible? This River North print shop can create a bust of your head or help you physically design a custom iPhone case through the magic of 3D printing. This is a technology that you've read about in sci-fi novels for years, so you owe it to yourself to check it out now that it's joined the realm of reality (though we're still waiting on 3D printers that create delicious pizzas).

Robot City Workshop

9.  Robot City Workshop

  • price 2 of 4

We're pretty sure that every science fiction geek dreams of building his or her own R2-D2 or WALL-E—this Lakeview shop can help you get started. Robot City Workshop makes the world of robotics accessible to people of all ages, helping kids put together robot kits or teaching more advanced students about microcontrollers. Before you start sorting through servos and optical sensors, take a few classes here to explore the possibilities of modern robotics.

The Escape Game

10.  The Escape Game

Escape rooms are essentially real-world video games, where you're presented with a set of challenges and given the tools to figure out a solution—this is the kind of stuff geeks live for. This River North complex offers up four different themed rooms where you can blast off of Mars, break out of prison, foil an art heist or locate some precious gold. Working with teams of up to six people, you'll have an hour to cooperate (if you dare!), crack the codes and add another notch to your nerd belt.

Rotofugi

11.  Rotofugi

  • Sheffield & DePaul

If you can't resist collecting vinyl toys housed in blind boxes, long-running designer toy shop Rotofugi might become your new favorite place in the city. The Lakeview shop stocks the latest products from Funko and Kidrobot as well as a wide selection of imported Japanese trinkets, including kaiju and colorful kawaii figurines. The store also hosts an art gallery where you'll often find pop-culture-inspired pieces from a range of artists.

iFLY Indoor Skydiving

12.  iFLY Indoor Skydiving

  • price 3 of 4

Your chances of gaining the ability to fly from a radioactive experiment are slim to none, but you can easily experience the sensation of floating through the air with an indoor skydiving lesson at iFly. After heroically signing a waiver, you can slip into a flight suit and go for an assisted soar in Rosemont’s only vertical wind tunnel. While you’re not likely to be mistaken for a bird or plane, you’ll certainly feel like Superman.

Millennium Park and Cloud Gate Millennium Park and Cloud Gate free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Construction around the Cloud Gate sculpture will limit the public's access to this top tourist attraction until spring 2024. While you might not be able to snag a selfie with "The Bean," many other attractions are available within the park. – Cortney Fries

A first-time visit to Chicago isn't complete without a stop at Millennium Park. Situated in the Loop just north of the Art Institute of Chicago , this 25-acre space is used to showcase cutting-edge art, architecture and landscaping; it also acts as a backdrop for concerts and festivals. Most visitors come to Millennium Park to see the Crown Fountain and Cloud Gate, better known as "The Bean." Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, the Crown Fountain features two 50-foot towers that face each other at opposite ends of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers' LED screens project the faces of 1,000 different Chicago residents, which are perfectly aligned with spouts so that it appears they are spitting water on passersby. The water flows mid-spring through mid-fall, while the faces are projected year-round. Cloud Gate – created by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor – is a 110-ton bean-shaped sculpture forged from stainless steel. The Bean's elliptical shape reflects the Chicago skyline. A quintessential Chicago souvenir is a photo of your reflection in The Bean.

First-time visitors should plan on spending a fair amount of time in Grant Park: This is where you'll find several of Chicago's most popular things to do, including The Field Museum , the Art Institute of Chicago and Shedd Aquarium . ( Millennium Park also rubs elbows with the northwest corner of Grant Park.) Baseball diamonds, flower gardens, walking paths and wide-open grassy terrain are available as well.

Home to one of the country's most impressive collections of impressionist and post-impressionist art (plus works from numerous other genres), the expansive Art Institute of Chicago features nearly 300,000 works from all over the world in its permanent collection. You'll find pieces created in the Byzantine era, as well as paintings completed just a few decades ago. Highlights include Jacob Lawrence's "The Wedding," Georgia O'Keeffe's "Sky above Clouds IV" and Grant Wood's "American Gothic." The Art Institute's exhibits also include all sorts of intriguing artifacts, from European armor to the Thorne Miniature Rooms, which showcase interior design and furnishings in Europe and America from the late 13th to early 20th centuries. In addition to the permanent collection, the Art Institute hosts traveling exhibitions covering a variety of subjects and showcasing a diverse array of artists and genres.

Navy Pier Navy Pier free

Extending out onto Lake Michigan, Navy Pier offers plenty in the way of family-friendly entertainment. The first thing you'll spot once you set foot on the pier is the towering Ferris wheel (which stands 196 feet tall); you'll also find a drop tower and a carousel. Once the kids have had their fill of thrill rides, you can spend some time cruising the Chicago River on a sightseeing or speedboat tour or spend a few hours exploring the Chicago Children's Museum , with hands-on exhibits ranging from treehouses to fire trucks.

But you don't have to be a kid to enjoy a visit to Navy Pier. Grown-ups can catch a show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, flex some credit card muscle at a variety of shops or grab a drink at the Navy Pier Beer Garden. And be sure to check Navy Pier's website for a list of events: Concerts are often held here, and from Memorial Day to Labor Day (as well as New Year's Eve), impressive fireworks displays light up the skies on Wednesday and Saturday nights. Many of the city's top Segway tours offer special summer evening tours to the pier to catch the semiweekly fireworks show.

360 CHICAGO Observation Deck 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck

One of Chicago's most notable attractions is its skyline, and one of the best places to experience it is at the 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck. Formerly known as the John Hancock Observatory, 360 CHICAGO towers 1,000 feet over The Magnificent Mile from its location on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center (or 875 North Michigan Avenue as its more formally known). Encased by floor-to-ceiling windows, 360 CHICAGO boasts expansive views of the city; on a clear day, you can see four states. Meanwhile, the interactive screens will help you identify different landmarks that appear in your panorama.

For a different point of view (and an adrenaline rush), test out 360 CHICAGO's TILT. In this mechanized room, visitors hold on to handlebars as the top of the room's windows extend outward, tilting you toward bustling North Michigan Avenue down below. For another memorable way to immerse yourself in the views, try ClouldWalk, a 3D art experience introduced in 2022. Mural artist Nate Baranowski created an optical illusion on the observation deck that makes visitors feel as though they are standing on a crane platform in the clouds.  Should you prefer to experience the view without feeling your heart skip a beat, grab a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a snack at the cafe and bar, or look for souvenirs in the gift shop.

This extensive natural history museum occupies half an acre of Grant Park 's Museum Campus and houses exhibits that showcase artifacts from multiple eras and destinations, making it a must-see for kids (as well as any fans of the "Indiana Jones" movies). Some of the most popular parts of the museum include the "Inside Ancient Egypt" exhibit, which features a reconstruction of a three-story replica of an Egyptian tomb, one of the largest collections of mummies in the United States and interactive representations of life on the Nile. There's also the Restoring Earth area in the Abbott Hall of Conservation, where visitors can learn more about sustainability through hands-on activities. But no visit to The Field Museum would be complete without some quality time with SUE, the facility's T. rex who just happens to be the largest, most complete T. rex ever discovered. Though several companies, including Wendella Sightseeing Co. and Chicago Line Cruises, offer architecture river cruises, most travelers recommend climbing aboard a Chicago's First Lady Cruises boat with a Chicago Architecture Center docent. Skydeck Chicago at the Willis Tower Skydeck Chicago at the Willis Tower

More than 1.7 million people make their way to Willis Tower's Skydeck Chicago each year, and it's easy to see why. The highlight for most visitors is the Ledge. Extending 4.3 feet beyond the building's exterior, this platform is made entirely of glass – even the floor. Travelers also liked the video screens that show what it would be like to stand 103 floors above other Chicago attractions, including Wrigley Field and Millennium Park . However, long lines quickly form for Skydeck Chicago, so plan on arriving early or purchasing a Chicago CityPASS, which covers expedited admission into the attraction. Or, simply pay extra for expedited entry, which features an express line to the elevators. For the best views, it's advised that you visit just after opening or after sunset. The Chicago Theatre The Chicago Theatre

Aside from Cloud Gate and Buckingham Fountain , The Chicago Theatre's red and yellow marquee is perhaps one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Illuminating North State Street at the northern edge of the Loop, The Chicago Theatre first opened its doors in 1921 as an extravagant movie theater and performance venue. Throughout its history, the theater has hosted such big names as Duke Ellington, Diana Ross and Prince, in addition to screening blockbuster flicks. Though the theater fell into disuse in the 1970s, new management and a full renovation in the 1980s helped return the venue to its former glory. Today, the theater is still used for a variety of comedic, theatrical and musical performances.

According to past patrons, the theater's historic appearance enhances the overall experience of catching an event here. Just remember, cameras and video cameras, including those on cell phones, cannot be used during tours or performances. Your Chicago State Street shopping guide

Chicago’s State Street is a one-stop spot for some of the city’s best shopping. Locals head here for the blocks on blocks of modern malls, historic department stores, specialty shops, bargain options, and more. Visitors love the central location, just a few blocks from Millennium Park , the Riverwalk , Theatre District , and more classic Chicago sights.

Here’s where to go during your shopping spree on Chicago’s State Street.

Macy’s on State Street

Macy’s on State Street is part architectural tour and part retail heaven. The building — a National Historic Landmark — has an ornate exterior with towering granite columns and the massive Great Clocks that greet State Street shoppers. The inside is just as grand — don’t miss the shimmering Tiffany ceiling that soars above the first-floor cosmetics department.

Walk to the main escalators and you’ll see the Burnham Fountain, designed by famed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham. For a shopping break, head to the historic Walnut Room (the very first restaurant in a department store) where you’ll find tons of old-world touches, like Austrian chandeliers and century-old wood paneling. Make sure to order Mrs. Hering’s Chicken Pot Pie, a staple on the menu since 1907.

If you’re visiting in the spring, don’t miss Macy’s annual Flower Show . And over the winter, a visit to Macy’s holiday windows is a Chicago tradition.

State Street stores

Just down the street, you’ll find AKIRA , the Chicago boutique that’s become a stylish Midwest staple. Expect loads of statement-making women’s clothing and personalized service.

Also on State Street, you’ll find all your favorite trend-setting stores, like UNIQLO , TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Express, Target, Journeys, and Zumiez, just to name a few.

PEOPLE'S 24 Hour Food Tour: Chicago

It may be known as the Second City, but Chicago is second to none when it comes to a memorable and diverse food scene. We pick the best places to eat in one delicious day

Writer Ari Bendersky has covered Chicago’s dining scene for nearly 20 years. From serving as founding editor of Eater Chicago to writing for many local and national publications (including WSJ magazine, New York Times, and Food & Wine) to launching his own Substack newsletter, Something Glorious , he continues to deliver the goods on where to eat, what wine and spirits to drink, and what’s happening in the lives of some of the world’s top chefs.

Chicago is inarguably one of the top culinary destinations in the U.S. From its legendary humbler fare (Chicago-style pizza and the requisite Chicago hot dog "dragged through the garden") to on-the-rise young chefs cooking the food of their cultures to some of the most lauded high-end cuisine in the country (there’s a reason the annual James Beard Foundation Awards are held here each year), there's something for everyone within the city limits.

That, of course, makes it almost impossible to put together an itinerary for a visitor looking to try the best of the city's eats in just one day. In fact, narrowing down your options might be some of the toughest decisions you ever make, up there with "Do I go to a top college to study engineering or go straight to work in a hot tech company?" and "Is a ticket to see Taylor Swift more important than covering my rent this month?"

Like we said, these aren't easy decisions, but you have to make the choice and just go with it. From breakfast to dinner to a late-night indulgence, Chicago has more options than you have time, so choose wisely — ideally with some guidance from those of us who take this "research" seriously. Here are our picks for where to dine during one day in one of the country’s best food cities.

Breakfast: Tiztal Cafe

Tiztal Cafe

No matter where you’re staying, grab a rideshare or hop on the “L” train and head to Uptown to this super cute Latin women-owned gem. Yes, you can get pancakes, scrambled eggs or an omelet, but Tiztal’s Mexican breakfast, especially the chilaquiles, is why you come here. Made with fresh crisp tortillas and green salsa, the dish gets topped with warm baked chihuahua cheese and cilantro (go extra and top it with steak and eggs, their specialty). Or opt for the huevos rancheros or chorizo scramble. But if you want simple eggs, be sure to ask for some pico de gallo and tortillas on the side. Pro tip: if it’s warm out, ask to sit on their recently renovated hidden backyard patio filled with Mexican art.

Lunch: Lula Cafe

Kyle Kissel

A mainstay in Chicago’s culinary world, Lula Cafe has been serving some of the best lunch (and let’s not forget dinner) for 25 years. The restaurant is led by chef/owner Jason Hammel, a multiple James Beard Award nominee and champion of the farm to table movement. Lula elevates brunch — you can order off the full brunch and lunch menu between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. — while remaining utterly cozy.

Keep it simple with buttermilk pancakes, or opt for a perfectly cooked French omelet filled with butternut squash, ricotta, and pear mostarda that’s served with a petit salad of local greens. Or go for baked French feta with marinated olives and a punchy jalapeño basil oil; the classic Lula ‘99 turkey sandwich layered with avocado, lettuce, and chili oil; or this writer’s favorite warming chickpea and fennel tagine with spiced green harissa and sweet golden raisins. Your table might be about to buckle after ordering everything that sounds delicious, but you should also treat yourself to one of their brunch cocktails — you’re on vacation, right?

Sweet Treat: Mindy’s Bakery

Aliza J Sokolow

After winning a James Beard Award for outstanding pastry chef, running a successful restaurant, and launching a massively successful edible cannabis brand, what’s left for Mindy Segal to do? Open her namesake bakery. Set in Wicker Park, Mindy’s Bakery sees people lining up early for an array of baked goods pulling from European and Middle Eastern traditions. Her housemade bagels and bialys are a huge draw, but if you're indulging an afternoon sweet tooth, you can’t pass up a twice-baked almond croissant, hot fudge glazed donuts, marbled sour cream coffee cake with cocoa nib streusel, and the smattering of hot-out-the-oven cookies, bars, brioche tarts, and cakes.

(Bonus pick: If you're here on a hot day and need to chill out, check out Pretty Cool Ice Cream , with locations in Logan Square and Lincoln Park, for inventive ice cream pops from award-winning pastry chef Dana Cree.)

Dinner: Shaw’s Crab House

Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants

There are any number of newer hotspots we could send you to (some recent favorites include Maxwells Trading , Obelix , Brasero , or Daisies — and frankly, if you have more time, definitely go to any one of these). But for a true "classic Chicago" dinner out, the city's 40-year mainstay Shaw’s Crab House is a fun stop with something for everyone.

It's two restaurants in one – the more formal dining room that throws back to the Rat Pack era and a casual and boisterous oyster bar. You can get steak or chicken, but it is a "crab house," after all, so definitely indulge in some of its popular seafood. Start with a dozen oysters flown in fresh from around North America. Move on to jumbo lump crab cakes or a cup of creamy New England clam chowder. Then settle in for seared Alaskan halibut, a lobster roll, or chilled stone crab claws (when in season).

Late Night Snack: The Wiener's Circle

Gabriella Zammuto

When you want a side of sass with your Chicago dog, head to the infamous Wiener's Circle . With a counter team known for dishing out fiery insults to an often drunk late-night (and even daytime) crowd, Wiener’s Circle has all the classic Chicago hot dog stand staples: Chicago dogs, char cheddar burgers, char Polish, cheddar fries, and more.

You might also get a side of a celeb sighting with your ketchup-free dog: Ed Sheeran has served food from behind the counter; Eagles center Jason Kelce arrived to find the restaurant’s sign reading “Welcome Taylor's Boyfriends Brother” (and gave back as good as he got), and global DJ Marshmello recently performed from the rooftop. This spot is definitely a vibe.

Spot a Celeb At: RPM Steak

Lindsay Eberly / Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants

This Chicago steakhouse, located in the heart of busy River North, has long been a beacon for the rich and famous. That should come as no surprise, since RPM Steak is owned in part by Bill and Giuliana Rancic.

Recent visitors include Chris Rock, Sophia Bush, Mariah Carey, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and they’re not just coming for its welcoming hospitality. It’s all about the food and drinks here.

The draw is the nearly 20 steak options like the 28-day dry-aged, 16-ounce New York Strip and four cuts of Japanese wagyu (priced per ounce) you can pair with decadent sauces and butters like black truffle bearnaise or king crab Oscar. But the giant seafood towers, warm Parker House rolls, spicy miso lobster, and whole roasted Dover sole add to the appeal. The extensive and impressive wine list? The cherry on top of it all.

Local News | New York Times’ 25 best Chicago restaurants include north, south, west burbs

Rib-eye kebab at Al Bawadi Grill in Bridgeview. Nick Kindelsperger / Chicago Tribune

The aroma of grilled kabobs and the sight of platters heaped with falafel, chicken, hummus and olives proved intoxicating for New York Times food writers, who named Al Bawadi Grill, with Niles and Bridgeview locations, one of that newspaper’s top 25 Chicago restaurants.

Most of the 25 eateries named by the Times are located in the city of Chicago, with just Al Bawadi (including both its locations), Kim’s Uncle Pizza in Westmont, Uncle John’s Bar-B-Que in Homewood, Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park and Superdawg in Wheeling (and the original location a stone’s throw from Niles) representing the suburbs–plus one other outlying find, Tortas Frontera, a Chef Rick Bayless outpost at O’Hare International Airport.

Former Chicago Tribune food writer Kevin Pang, writing in the New York Times, said Al Bawadi “transports you to a sumptuous Bedouin tent — ceilings draped with colorful fabric, the waft of grilled meats ever-present.” 7216 West 87th Street, Bridgeview; 708-599-1999; or 8501 West Dempster Street, Niles; 847-957-1999; albawadigrill.com

He opined that Kim’s Uncle Pizza is “the Platonic ideal of Chicago tavern-style pizza” due to its crackly crust, flavorful tomato sauce and juicy Italian sausage. 207 N. Cass Ave., Westmont, (630) 963-1900, unclepizzawestmont.com

The sausage and giardiniera tavern-style pizza at Kim's Uncle Pizza in Westmont. Brian Cassella / Chicago Tribune

Of the much-loved hot dog emporium Superdawg, where you eat in your car trying not to get French fry grease on the steering wheel, Pang wrote that it’s “frozen in 1950s charm” and described the two iconic, giant-sized hot dog statues, Maurie and Flaurie, which stand on the roof. They represent the founders, who started serving the dressed-up franks in 1948, according to the website. 6363 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago; 773-763-0660, or 333 South Milwaukee Avenue, Wheeling; 847-459-1900; superdawg.com

Pang has praise for Uncle John’s, saying pitmaster Aja Kennebrew is keeping alive the tradition of South Side Chicago bar-b-que, brought north during the Great Migration and requiring constant tending of the cooking fire. 17947 South Halsted Street, Homewood; 708-960-4612; unclejohnsbbq.com

Positing that eating a drippingly juicy Johnnie’s Beef while sitting on your car hood might be one of the most truly Chicago things to do, even though it’s in Elmwood Park, Pang says the flavorful sandwich was truly local until “The Bear” spread its fame. 7500 West North Avenue, Elmwood Park; 708-452-6000; facebook.com/people/Johnnies-Beef

Italian beef at Johnnie's Beef.

“Expectations-defying” is the term Pang employs for Tortas Frontera, which he notes offers a crunchy, melty choriqueso sandwich and the same tortilla soup found at Chicago Chef Rick Bayless’ other operations, Frontera Grill and Topolobambo. Inside Terminals 1, 3, 5 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 10000 West O’Hare Avenue, Chicago; rickbayless.com

The Chicago restaurants on the list range from the reliables which consistently make “best of” lists, such as Avec and Oriole, to newer arrivals like Maxwell’s Trading, Asador Bastien and Warlord.
