The Chinese Junk Boat

Chinese Junk Boats were first built in the second century (circa 200 AD) but flourished during the Song and Ming Dynasties.

During the Ming Dynasty, under the capable leadership of Admiral Zheng He, the world became much smaller as foreign lands were peacefully discovered and merchant trade established. The Chinese junk proved to be the greatest ship design the world had ever known, with Treasure Ships in the Chinese fleet which measured 150 meters!

Until the 1980s, there were thousands of Chinese Junk Boats in Hong Kong Harbour…

Zheng He (1371–1433 or 1435), formerly romanized as Cheng Ho, was a Hui Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat, and fleet admiral during China’s early Ming dynasty. Born Ma He, Zheng commanded expeditionary voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, Western Asia, and East Africa from 1405 to 1433. His larger ships stretched 120 meters in length (Columbus’s Santa Maria, for comparison, was 26 meters). These carried hundreds of sailors on four tiers of decks.

As a favorite of the Yongle Emperor, whose usurpation he assisted, Zheng He rose to the top of the imperial hierarchy and served as commander of the southern capital Nanjing (the capital was later moved to Beijing by the Yongle Emperor). These voyages were long neglected in official Chinese histories but have become well known in China and abroad since the publication of Liang Qichao’s Biography of Our Homeland’s Great Navigator, Zheng He in 1904.[3][4] A trilingual stele left by the navigator was discovered on the island of Sri Lanka shortly thereafter.

Sailing on a Hong Kong Junk

  • Hong Kong Junk

Victoria Harbour Cruises at Night

The Hong Kong junk has come to represent the old traditional values that are still so ever present in this cosmopolitan city.

The sight of this venerable vessel with its flashy red sails set against the backdrop of an ultra modern skyline is certainly striking and it has become a cherished symbol of the city.

There aren't that many traditional sampans in operation any more, so if you happen to see the red-sail sampans traversing the waters of the bay, it will more than likely be one of these vessels:

  • The Duk Ling

The Aqua Luna

A sampan ride on one of these vessels will take some planning in advance from your part as the sailings offered are limited. Here are some tips and guidelines to help you plan your junk ride.

Duk Ling : "The" Hong Kong Junk

Hong Kong Junk: Duk Ling

The Duk Ling is "the" Hong Kong Junk. This true relic which underwent full restoration in the 1980's, is an original junk used by fishermen and the last of its kind in Hong Kong waters.

Hong Kong Junk: Duk Ling

It has led parades during some of Hong Kong's most iconic festivals, as well as when the giant rubber ducky sailed into Victoria Harbour.

Tragically, Duk Ling sank during a typhoon in 2014 and regularly scheduled Harbour Cruises which were sponsored by the Hong Kong Tourism Board had to stop.

Two Hong Kong yacht traders, Yu Lik-hang and his aunt Cheng Ching-wah, have acquired Duk Ling from the previous owners and to great effort and expense, have managed to save the vessel.

Duk Ling is licensed to carry up to 36 passengers plus crew.

At the moment, cruises are running on Saturdays and Sundays only. The cruise takes around one hour to sail around Victoria Harbour.

Boarding locations at Tsim Sha Tsui Avenue of the Stars by the Starbucks.

In addition, special sailings are conducted during holidays and special events, such as fireworks cruises for Chinese New Year or National Day, Mother's Day or Father's Day cruises, Halloween, etc. so keep an eye out for these.

Duk Ling is also available for private charter.

  • More info and tickets www.dukling.com.hk

Sailing on the Duk Ling Tips

  • If weather does not cooperate, the ride could be a rough one. In case of rainy days, there is a lower level that is covered.
  • Bring camera, sunglasses, if warm and sunny days, swimsuit and sunscreen, if cooler temperatures a windbreaker or jacket.
  • Hope for great weather and enjoy your junk ride in Hong Kong's last authentic Chinese fishing junk!

Hong Kong Junk: Aqua Luna

The Aqua Luna is a gorgeous hand-crafted vessel run by the Aqua Restaurant Group of Beijing/London/HongKong fame. You are perhaps not sailing an original old traditional fishing junk as opposed to the Duk Ling , but still very much an adventure in exquisite and classy surroundings.

Hong Kong Junk: Aqua Luna Top Deck

Aqua Luna operates daily and offers several sailings daily, including Afternoon Tea sailings, delectable Dim Sum cruises, Sunset and Evening sailings with departures from both sides, leaving from Tsim Sha Tsui from Public Pier 1 and Central from Pier 9 .

The cruise includes drinks and refreshments.

The best part of Aqua Luna has to be the top deck which is lined on both sides with comfy sofas where you can lounge, enjoy your cocktail and the marvelous views all around you.

A Brief History Of The Chinese Junk

MrT HK/Flickr

Crimson-masted junk ships are an iconic part of Hong Kong ’s Victoria harbor, and have been used in China for fishing, trade, and war since at least the second century. Built from lightweight woods, with flat bottoms and bamboo-slatted masts, the junk epitomizes Chinese shipbuilding techniques. Read more about its origins below. Junks first appeared in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), a small, shallow-hulled vessel with one or two masts. The boat’s narrow shape was designed to allow it to glide quickly across the water, while the flat bottom made it possible to dock in shallow waters.

The Chinese-style ships also featured ‘battened’ sails, meaning that they incorporated bamboo spines for stability. These spines served several purposes. First of all, it sectioned the sail, protecting small rips and tears from compromising the rest of the sail. Secondly, they were linked in such a way that sailors could adjust the sails from the deck, without having to endanger themselves by climbing up the mast.

The earliest sails were not made from canvas but from woven grass, which had to be dipped in tannins in order to be toughened up. This resulted in a reddish-brown hue, which was carried on when canvas masts were invented. The bright crimson masts seen in Hong Kong’s harbor today still bear this historical hallmark.

(Top) © KittyKaht/Flickr

As time progressed, junks became larger and more masts were added. By the time the Song Dynasty (950-1276) rolled around, junks featured four masts and were essential to the nation’s trade and commerce.

In the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), junks were incorporated into the army, giving rise to a formidable navy. This was the era of Admiral Zheng He, a legendary seafarer of the 15th century. Zheng He voyaged with the imperial Ming navy all the way to India , Arabia, and even as far as Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, trading in ivory and spices and establishing diplomatic ties with foreigners. At its peak, Zheng He’s armada had 30,000 sailors and over 300 ships, including the legendary nine-masted Treasure Ship. Measuring 400 ft. long and 150 ft. wide, it was the largest junk built in history.

While Zheng He’s expeditions were encouraged by the Yongle Emperor, his successor, the Hongxi Emperor, was less enthusiastic. Once he took the throne, the Hongxi Emperor cancelled maritime expeditions, burned down the fleet, decommissioned the imperial crew and put a stop to the shining era of Chinese navigation, a prohibition that would last for the next few hundred years.

However, Chinese shipbuilding prowess and techniques were preserved and carried on in the south of China, far away from the imperial capital, by humble fishermen and even pirates . Today, visitors to Hong Kong can catch a glimpse of the famous Aqua Luna, a handcrafted, historically authentic junk offering harbor cruises and onboard fine dining.

Aqua Luna: The Most Stylish Junk in Hong Kong

If the Star Ferry is all about efficiency and transportation, Aqua Luna is nothing but style and sophistication.

The Aqua Luna is an authentic wooden Chinese junk boat, lovingly restored from a humble fishing vessel into a chic cruise for tourists. With an open deck, two cabins, and lounge seats where you can take in the view, it’s a great way to see Victoria Harbour .

Taking a ride on the Aqua Luna is consistently voted one of the most unforgettable experiences in Hong Kong. There’s nothing quite like cruising on this classic ship, with the warm, salty wind in your hair, music in the background, a cold cocktail in your hand, and the incredible skyline of Hong Kong as your backdrop.

Aqua Luna

Aqua Luna’s most popular tours

Aqua Luna offers a number of different harbour tours, both in the day time, and in the evening. Cruises typically leave from Central Pier #9, or the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, and pick up passengers on both sides, giving you flexibility about where and when to board. Harbour Discovery Tour

The Harbour Discovery Tour is an afternoon hop-on-hop-off trip that stops at four locations: the Tsim Sha Promenade, Central Pier #9, Wan Chai Public Pier, and the Hung Hom Public Pier. Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hutong is gorgeously decorated, and has one of the best harbour views around from the 28th floor.

Aqua Luna boat interior

Aqua Luna runs special seasonal trips. For example in May 2021, there will be a pirate-theme cruise + dim sum lunch and a afternoon tea cruise for Buddha’s birthday. Cheung Chau Island for the annual Bun Festival , which takes place in May. Hong Kong junk boat tours set sail from Steveston this summer

Valerie Leung

A Hong Kong junk ship tours will set sails from Steveston early August.

Large red sails are expected to fly from Steveston’s waters this summer as a family begins their Hong Kong junk boat tours teaching people about Chinese culture.

Montgomery Gisborne, also known as Captain Shan Long, and his family plan to start operating sailing tours from his 38-foot long, 12-foot-wide authentic Chinese junk sailing ship out of Imperial Landing in early August.

The boat will sail through the Ladner marsh towards New Westminster and back.

While the eye-catching red boat may be a fun to look at, Gisborne said the main goal is to explain the history of Chinese culture, specifically the Ming Dynasty, to their passengers.

“For people who are very curious about Asian culture and appreciative of it, but don’t really know much about it, this is an opportunity to experience and learn from a wonderful perspective on the waters,” said Gisborne.

Gisborne, while not of Asian heritage, said he has been interested in the Asian civilization for as long as he can remember and given that his wife and daughter are Chinese, together they decided to share their love for the culture and its traditions on these tours.

Along with offering a history lesson, the tours serve up a variety of Chinese dishes, snacks and even tea service for people to learn about flower teas, he explained.

Hai Long, which is translated to “sea dragon,” was the name given to the boat when he bought it from the original owners in 2016.

The ship was built for a Canadian family in 1968. The construction took place in Hong Kong where the family stayed to oversee its production said Gisborne.

“It’s exactly as close to the only Chinese junk ship in existence during that period,” he said.

While junk boats were built as work boats, used for fishing, cargo and passenger transportation for hundreds of years, Hai Long was built purely for pleasure.

The iconic boats are now often used as part of harbour cruises and for onboard fine dining in Hong Kong.

Currently, Hai Long is docked at Shelter Island Marina for maintenance work.

Gisborne is anticipating to launch the boat from Imperial Landing during the first week of August.

“It’s going to be delightful to get back into operating Hai Long and celebrate the talented people and the Chinese cultural influence that built her.”

Gisborne began offering his summer tours with his family in Prince Edward Island since 2017.

The boat went into storage in October 2019 and the family travelled to Coquitlam, B.C. for a six-month contract work during the off season.

That’s when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and took the winds out of their sails.

“It was a terrible and stressful time for our family,” said Gisborne.

His wife and daughter had travelled to Wuhan to visit his wife’s family when the city went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The two were unable to leave Wuhan for two months until they were secured a spot onboard a flight for evacuees, organized by the Government of Canada, out of Wuhan in March.

“Our business got shut down and when COVID-19 restrictions were finally lifted, we paid a lot of money and had the boat hauled across Canada to Richmond.”

Now, Gisborne is ready to have Hai Long fixed up and return to their tours.
