Take the ferry from Geiranger to Hellesylt during winter time.
The ferry cruise from Hellesylt to Geiranger takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, and while cruising the fjord you can see beautiful waterfalls and small farms in the steep mountain sides.
In the winter the atmorphere will be totally different from summertime which has the green colours in the mountain farms. Less people travel in this time of the year, but absolutely worth the trip!

The Wonderful Geiranger Fjord
The beautiful Geiranger Fjord stretches from Hellesylt to Geiranger. The Geiranger Fjord is known for its wonderful natural beauty, with steep mountains, majestic waterfalls, old mountain farms, lush green areas and crystal clear water.
It is no wonder that the Geiranger Fjord, as part of the larger Geiranger area, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The boat trip between Hellesylt and Geiranger is a wonderful experience
The Geirangerfjord is approximately 15 kilometers long and the fjord reaches 600 meters at its deepest. The fjord is surrounded by steep cliffs and mountains that stretch up to 1600 meters above sea level.
The Geiranger Fjord Waterfalls
A lovestory
There are many waterfalls that find their way to the Geiranger Fjord. "The Seven Sisters" (De Syv Søstre) and "The Bachelor" (Frieren) are the most famous. The Seven Sisters is a fantastic sight from the fjord. The waterfall consists of seven separate waterfalls close together, each with its own distinct flow.
The legend associated with the waterfall says that the Seven Sisters flirt and dance playfully down the mountain, with the Bachelor just over on the other side of the fjord.
The Bachelor (Frieren) is a solitary waterfall on the opposite side of the fjord from De Syv Søstre. According to local folklore, The Bachelor is a persistent admirer of the Seven Sisters, and creates a romantic tale around these two waterfalls.
The Bridal Veil waterfall (Brudesløret), not far away, is perhaps the happy ending in the romantic tale. A few weeks a year, meltwater from the mountains creates a shower from the Bridal Veil that forms a beautiful rainbow when the sun shines on it. As if it was a beautiful wedding.
Experience the waterfalls up close with a fjord cruise to Geiranger
The old fjord farms.
High up on in mountain sides throughout the Geirangerfjord are old fjord farms. These are vacated farms from a time gone by. People settled here and ran their farms, some of them as far back as the Viking Age.
Skageflå, Knivsflå and Horvadrag are some of the best known.
The Skageflå farm is located on a mountain shelf 250 meters above the fjord with a fantastic view of the waterfalls The Seven Sisters and the fjord farm Knivsflå on the other side.
Knivsflå is located on a mountain shelf 259 meters above the fjord close to De Syv Søstre.
Horvadrag lies steeply to 240 meters above the fjord, between The Seven Sisters and The Bridal Veil.
Geiranger is a gem deep in the Geirangerfjord. A small, charming settlement with a captivating mix of natural beauty, cultural richness and outdoor experiences.
Geiranger is a charming and idyllic refuge, with charming houses and buildings in. The architecture blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating a harmonious and visually appealing environment. As you stroll through Geiranger's streets, you will find a peaceful atmosphere that perfectly complements the stunning landscape.

The UNESCO listed fjord landscape
When you see it, there is no wonder why the Geirangerfjord is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The fjord is surrounded by a pristine landscape of steep, tall mountains and cascading waterfalls such as the Knivsflå waterfalls which is known as the Seven Sisters and the the Suitor. The small farms you can see clinging to the mountain sides, seems almost uninhabitable. They have stayed more or less untouched in modern times and are only accessible by boat and foot.
Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Geirangerfjord has been on the World Heritage List since 2005 as West Norwegian Fjords. According to UNESCO, the two fjords are considered as archetypical fjord landscapes and among the most scenically outstanding anywhere.
Explore Geiranger
While a cruise on the fjord is the main highlight, take the time to explore the charming village when you are in Geiranger. In the main street you find small individual stores selling locally produced items, such as mouth-watering chocolate. Fossestien is a path following the impressive waterfall from the fjord up to Hotel Union Geiranger. At the top you can pay a visit to the Norwegian Fjord Centre to learn more about the geology of the landscape and culture by the fjord.
There are several viewpoints in the hills above the town centre with spectacular views towards the fjord. If you do not have your own car to take you there, opt to hire an electrical bicycle or eMobility car from the town centre. Read more about what to do in Geiranger here.

Hellesylt cruise port guide – gateway to geirangerfjord and more.
Make the most of your day in Hellesylt Cruise Port with my guide of things to do in this enchanting village.
Sitting between fjords and mountains, Hellesylt, Norway is perhaps one of the hidden gems of the Norwegian Fjords. Just around the corner from the start of Geirangerfjord , Norway’s most famous fjord, it is often overshadowed by it’s more well-known neighbour, Geiranger . However, the picturesque village is a beautiful port in its own right.
With gorgeous views all around and, perhaps unexpectedly, a dramatic waterfall taking centre stage in the village, Hellesylt cruise port is worthy addition to any cruise itinerary.
Whether you want to journey along the Geirangerfjord, enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Stryn or hike the Briksdal Glacier , Hellesylt is a great place for a Norwegian Fjords adventure.
Hellesylt Cruise Port
Cruise ships dock right in the heart of Hellesylt. If you are lucky enough to have a balcony and are on the right side of the ship, you’ll wake up to a spectacular view of the Hellesyltfossen waterfall that thunders through the centre of the village.
As Hellesylt is so small there is no cruise terminal here or any facilities. Once you disembark your ship you are right in the heart of the village. It is just a short walk to get up close to the waterfall. Local amenities include a supermarket, souvenir shops and cafes.
Some cruise ships stop here for a few hours in the morning to drop off passengers that are taking an overland excursion before continuing to Geiranger . While others spend a full day in port. Check with your cruise line to see how long you will have docked here.
What to do in Hellesylt from a Cruise Ship
Hellesylt is a small place, so don’t expect there to be too much on offer. It’s all about the natural beauty and enjoying the scenery here, not lots of bars and restaurants. However, some of the things you can do in Hellesylt include
- Marvelling at the Hellesyltfossen waterfall as it cascades throughout the village
- Taking a boat trip along the Geirangerfjord
- Visiting the Sunnylven Church
- Strolling around taking in the spectacular scenery or doing a local hike
Hellesyltfossen waterfall
The Hellesyltfossen waterfall (or Hellesylt waterfall) is a small, but mighty, waterfall that tumbles through the village. It seems like it splits the village almost in half.
If you are visiting at the beginning of the summer, you will see it in full flow as snow will be thawing higher up the mountain. I was there in early June and it was pretty powerful still even then. The water thunders down the granite rocks with such a force you can feel the spray if you get too close.
The waterfall is set between two bridges, the lower one gives a fantastic view towards it.
Sunnylven Church
Overlooking the fjord, Sunnylven Church is a parish church that was built in 1858. Made out of timber from local woods, the church can seat 270 people, enough for the whole population of Hellesylt.
It is often open when cruise ships are in town so if you are having a wander around it is worth stopping by this beautiful church.
Popular shore excursions from Hellesylt
Shore excursions from Hellesylt include tours of the area and trips over to Geiranger.
Exploring Geirangerfjord
One of the main attractions of Hellesylt is its proximity to Geirangerfjord. The UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the must-see sight of the Norwegian Fjords .
Many cruise lines will offer excursions to explore Geirangerfjord . This could be via a boat trip along the fjord to Geiranger or an overland trip that will take in many scenic viewpoints on the way to the village.
Some Hellesylt excursions will combine both with a boat ride along the fjord to Geiranger and then a coach tour around the most famous viewpoints.
It’s best to check with your cruise line for the different options. However, if you prefer to do it yourself there is a public car ferry to Geiranger. Don’t worry though you don’t need a car, it also carries foot passengers.
The journey along the fjord takes an hour and you’ll see the highlights including the Seven Sisters Waterfall. You can then spend a little time in Geiranger or return on the ferry.
One thing to keep in mind if you take this option is that you’ll have to make your own way to the viewpoints in Geiranger.
There is a hop on hop off bus that visits four destinations including Norwegian Fjord Centre and the famous Flydalsjuvet viewpoint. This runs between June and September. Alternatively, you can also rent an Renault Twizy electric car.
It will also be your responsibility to get back to the ship in Hellesylt in time for departure. Don’t expect it to wait for you if the ferry back is delayed or you miss it.

Hellesylt Highlights
Local companies offer private half and full-day tours of Hellesylt and the surrounding area. Stops often include Hornindalsvatn Lake, Stryn Village, Mount Dalsnibb and Flydalgorge.
The Last Word
Hellesylt is a charming village full of the beauty of the Norwegian Fjords. It is a great starting point for an adventure around Geirangerfjord or just a relaxing day taking in the scenery from your ship.

Hellesylt, Geiranger & Mount Dalsnibba With P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords Cruise
Before our cruise in August 2022, Iona would dock at Geiranger – a famous port which is one of the highlights of the cruise.
However, I believe that because Iona is right at the upper limit of size of ship the Geiranger port can accommodate, this port of call had to be switched for nearby Hellesylt, which is easier to get to and with less risk of the port being missed completely.
Hellesylt is still a beautiful port, but perhaps not quite as picturesque as Geiranger, which is just around the corner – but out of sight unless you take an excursion there.
P&O had told us they’d swapped Geiranger for Hellesylt before we travelled and – having heard how popular Gerainger is, we decided to book an excursion that would take us there.
This was the only official P&O excursion we booked – the others we organised ourselves independently, but as getting to Gerainger from Hellesylt is a bit more complicated, we decided not to risk finding our own way, and booked up a combined boat trip to Gerainger with a coach trip to the top of Mount Dalsnibba – the highest point in the region.
There had been some doubt as to whether we’d even make it into Hellesylt – the captain announcing the evening before that bad weather may prevent us entering the fjord, and that we should be prepared to wake up in an alternative port entirely.
So we were pleased to open our balcony curtains that morning to see the stunning sight of the roaring waterfall that’s the centrepiece of the port at Hellesylt.
Disembarking just after breakfast, it was easy to find the boat that would provide the first part of our journey through the fjord to Gerainger, and we spent time up on the deck taking more photos of the incredible surroundings.
The boat trip from Hellesylt to Geiranger took about 45 minutes and passed through some of the most stunning scenery we’ve ever seen.
The highlight is the ‘Seven Sisters’ waterfall, on the approach to Geiranger – seven waterfalls side-by-side, cascading down from above us into the fjord.
Just the boat trip itself would’ve been worth the money for this excursion but, once we’d docked in Geiranger, we had a coach trip to the very top of the highest mountain in the region.
The coach was waiting for us as soon as we got off the boat.
Some of the P&O passengers were doing other Geiranger excursions just around the small town, but those who were headed up the mountain boarded the coach, to be welcomed by a very friendly tour guide named Karl.
The coach worked its way up a very narrow, winding road up and away from Geiranger port, taking in some amazing views of the fjord as it did so.
The whole way, the guide Karl gave a commentary, with little stories about the local sights, which was entertaining and amusing the whole way.
If you suffer travel sickness, be prepared – especially if you’re near the back of the coach, that this journey is likely to trigger that off – as it’s such a windy road with so many hairpin bends.
I’d taken some travel sickness pills as a preventative measure and was glad I did. A little girl on the coach wasn’t so fortunate!
There’s a stopping point half way up the mountain with beautiful views back down to Geiranger below and the fjord beyond – but, on this occasion, the driver decided we’d skip that and head straight for the summit of Mount Dalsnibba, because it was clear of cloud at the time, which is a rare occurrence.
After about 45-minutes on the coach, we arrived at the very top of Dalsnibba, where there’s car park, a cafe / gift-shop and various viewing platforms to enjoy some of the best views the Norwegian Fjords have to offer.
However, as has apparently happened on almost every single other excursion here for the last few months, by the time we arrived, cloud had moved in and completely shrouded the mountain top, giving us a view of little more than a load of grey fog.
And along with the cloud, some absolutely lashing rain and howling winds which made staying outside at the viewpoint virtually impossible.
This is the only downside of a cruise and excursions here in Norway – that the weather can play such a prominent part in whether you get to see or do what you originally planned.
That said though, we didn’t feel it ruined this excursion at all.
It would’ve been great to see the full view of Geiranger and the fjord, but actually the views on the way up there were still well worth making the trip for.
We sheltered in the shop for a while before running back to the coach, which took us back down – stopping at the viewpoint that we skipped on the way up.
When we eventually arrived back at Geiranger, there was a bit of time left to look around the port and its shops before the boat arrived to take us back to Iona.
The rain cleared by this time and the boat trip back was equally as enjoyable as the ride there.
Like I said before, just the boat ride through this amazing fjord would be worth the money on its own.
If you’re docking at Hellesylt on Iona, it is really very well worth making an excursion around to Geiranger.
Hellesylt is beautiful but Geiranger and the fjord surrounding it is even better.
What’s more, it turns out these towns only have a limited amount of time left in existence before a gigantic tsunami inevitably destroys them completely (Google the Geiranger ‘wave’ and the film the depicts what will be this region’s inevitable demise!)
We were back on board Iona in time for lunch and an enjoyable afternoon of more relaxation on the ship, before a surprise treat – particularly for those who hadn’t been fortunate enough to get to Geiranger and see the surroundings and the Seven Sisters waterfalls.
When we departed, Iona sailed up the fjord towards the Seven Sisters, performing a 360-degree turn in the middle of the fjord so everyone on the ship got an incredible panoramic view of the Seven Sisters and the approach to Geiranger.
We happened to be at the Crows Nest bar at this point, which is the bar on the ship with the best all-round panoramic view right at the top and front of Iona.
It was almost a surreal experience seeing this scenery unfolding in front of us through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows of the Crows Nest bar, enjoying the view from the comfort of a big arm chair with a cocktail and a pianist playing live in the background.
This day, and the whole place – Hellesylt, Geiranger and the route up to Mount Dalsnibba – were all an unforgettable experience.

Geiranger Fjordservice AS offers exclusive fjord cruises on the world-famous Geirangerfjord.
To join a fjordtour is an excellent way to explore this magnificent section of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in comfort on board of one of our local sightseeing boats MS Geirangerfjord or MS Geirangerfjord II, our brandnew catamaran. The modern and well-appointed boats can accommodate up to 165 passengers. The fjord cruises last around 60 minutes (SignaTour Cruise) or 90 minutes (Fjordsightseeing). Light refreshments can be purchased on board. There is an outside viewing deck and an inside area with large panorama windows.
The fjord cruises take passengers for a close-up view to the waterfalls “The Seven Sisters”, “The Bridal Veil” and “The Suitor”. Many of the abandoned mountain farms along the fjord can be seen as well. The audio guide provides our guests with interesting facts and stories about the scenery and life at the Geirangerfjord in twelve different languages.
For extra flexibility, we operate a drop-off and pick-up service for those passengers who would like to go on a little hike and spend some time visiting the isolated fjord farm Skageflå.
Standing on the deck of the boat and feeling the spray of the Seven Sisters waterfalls is a very special experience. The highest of the “Sisters” has a free fall of 250 m.
According to legend, the “Suitor” tried to propose to the "Seven Sisters” from the opposite side of the fjord – but never succeeded. The cruise passes very close to that waterfall, which gives you great photo opportunities
Close to the fjord farm Skageflå you find the mountain formation "The Pulpit Rock".
Skageflå is the best-known fjord farm with a fantastic view to the Geirangerfjord and the mountains around. It is the endpoint of the popular fjordfarm hike. Norway’s King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their silver wedding here in 1993. The Queen has visited the farm on several occasions since.
Knivsflå The fjordfarm Knivsflå is located next to "The Seven Sisters” waterfalls and directly opposite of Skageflå and lies approximately 250 m above sea level.
Blomberg fjordfarm can be reached via a steep path from the fjord. The farm is 450 m above sea level and provides beautiful views over the Geirangerfjord, including the waterfalls "The Seven Sisters”, “The Bridal Veil” and “The Suitor”.
Matvik is located close to the water almost at the end of the Geirangerfjord. It was one of the last farms to be abandoned (1961) and it was a very fertile farm with 150 plum trees. They even grew apricots here.
The stunning Eagle Road has eleven hairpin bends, the highest of them is called Ørnesvingen (“Eagle Bend”). From here you can enjoy fantastic views over the fjord towards "The Pulpit Rock" and "The Seven Sisters" waterfalls. It is the perfect place to spot cruise ships on their way into the Geirangerfjord.

Hellesylt is a port town in More og Romsdal, Norway. The town is located at the head of Sunnylvsfjorden (a branch of Storfjorden). The more popular Geirangerfjorden branches off near by. The small village has population under 500. The distance between Hellesylt and the other tender port Geiranger (Geirangerfjord) is approx 22 km (14 mi).
In the summer, thousands of tourists stay in or travel through Hellesylt each day. Most of them take the ferry to nearby Geiranger. During high season, the ferry runs every 1, 5 hours. The village is surrounded by valleys and mountains.
Hellesylt is under constant threat from the Akerneset mountain, which is about to erode into Sunnylvsfjord. A collapse could cause a tsunami destroying the town.

Cruise ships to Hellesylt dock at the port's new cruise pier (1 berth capacity). Here can be berthed even the world's largest vessels. In rare cases, when the port is visited by more ships at a time, the other vessels are anchored and their passengers are transported via the ship's tender boats.
Often, both Norwegian cruise ports Hellesylt and Geiranger are itinerary-connected. The ship stops for a few hours at one of them to offload (tender) cruise passengers with booked tours there. At the other port, the ship docks to stay longer. Usually, passenger disembarkation is allowed at both ports.
