  • Ports of Call

Cruise to Baja Mexico for some south-of-the-border flavor with a coastal twist. Don’t be confused — the Baja California peninsula is actually in Mexico, and cruises to Mexico are a great way to explore this area. Getting there’s a snap, because it’s just south of California (California, USA, that is) and it’s all just a short trip when you cruise from Los Angeles. While the region features a geography not unlike SoCal, it’s a different world… one that attracts American expats, and especially retirees, who call coastal resort towns like Ensenada their home. Cruise to Baja Mexico and enjoy Ensenada’s beaches before hitting the fashionable shops of Avenida Primera for new jewelry… duty-free, of course.

  • Get to know the place through the delicacies it brings to the table.
  • Enjoy life on the coast… plus the fishing, surfing and kayaking opportunities it offers.
  • See what’s on tap at the region’s local craft breweries.

The rugged beauty of the island makes it an ideal spot for escapades. (BLD)

Day 3 Bahia Agua Verde

The town of Puerto Escondido is also a great place to explore, with a charming local market, calm surrounding waters and beautiful desert landscapes. Depending on timing we may also have the option to visit Loreto Town on certain days, the first colonial city on the Baja pennisula. on certain months with a historic with peaceful charm and dazzling landscapes. Mother Nature is your guide today. Take your adventurous side and your binoculars in search of the largest baleen whales in the world. The Sea of Cortés is home to fin, blue, and sperm whales, and the dolphin pods number in the hundreds.

If the gray whales have arrived on Baja’s west coast (mid-January – early-March)—migrating more than 12,000 miles to calve in Bahía Magdalena—you’ll drive across the peninsula for a panga ride to observe these mammals and their babies in the lagoon.

Mid-March through April are your best chance to see whale sharks near La Paz and in other parts of the Sea of Cortes.

Later in the season, we have resident whales and dolphins in our sights. Or, kick back with a beach party—complete with a cool drink and sun-soaked lounge. (BLD)

Each year California gray whales pause during their migrations to birth and nurse their calves in the Bahia Magdalena lagoons. For most travelers, the only opportunity to observe the mothers and calves is to take a bus across the Baja peninsula for a day trip. Fortunately, this 8-day Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise explores both coastlines of the Baja Peninsula and offers ample on-water time inside key bays, enhancing every passenger’s experience among the great whales.

Spend time with these gentle giants in Bahia Almejas and Boca de Soledad, making Zodiac forays for up-close observations. Ply the warm Baja water on kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, Zodiacs and local pangas. Desert island hikes complement time spent on the water, offering a true variety of wildlife spotting in the Gulf of California. Snorkel with sea lions and search for marine mammals, all while benefiting from professional naturalist guides with more than 30 years’ experience.

The 100-guest National Geographic Venture offers the best in active small ship cruising. Each expedition is crafted for the most in-depth experience of Baja California possible and to maximize time spent in the company of California gray whales. Flexibility is paramount to take advantage of a sighting of blue or sperm whales. Be prepared to linger in expedition landing crafts to watch blue-footed boobies plunge dive into a massive school of bait fish. With captain and crew focused on seeking the best opportunities and an expert expedition team including a National Geographic-certified photo instructor and an undersea specialist enhancing the experience, this Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise is truly a trip of a lifetime.

Main Baja California: Among the Great Whales Itinerary

The main, eastbound Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise begins in Loreto, Baja, with an overland transit to San Carlos, where guests embark and cruise counterclockwise around the tip of the Baja Peninsula back to Loreto.

Eastbound Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise route map, operating round-trip from Loreto with visits to San Carlos, Magdalena Bay, Cabo Pulmo, La Paz & Los Islotes.

Arrive in Loreto by early afternoon and be transferred to San Carlos to embark the ship. Tonight, the ship will anchor off the coast of Isla Santa Margarita.

  • National Geographic Venture

Awake anchored in Bahia Almejas, the southernmost part of the Bay. The ship will stop at a large frigatebird colony enroute to the spectacular whale grounds of Bahía Almejas. Whales in this part of the bay tend to be very active so settle in for some great experiences. During lunch, the ship will reposition to Isla Magdalena for a shore excursion to explore the ever-shifting sand dunes, on a cross-island walk to one of the most pristine beaches in the Pacific. Bird watching can be excellent here with abundant seabirds in action.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Each winter, during their long migration, gray whales travel south from their Arctic feeding grounds to breed and give birth and raise their calves in these sheltered waters. Transfer by motorcoach to López Mateos and spend the full day observing these majestic creatures. Together with savvy local Mexican fishermen, board local boats to view the numerous mother-calf pairs that thrive in this sheltering region. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to the ship in late afternoon.

Kickstart the morning with stretching hosted by the onboard wellness specialist on the sun deck. After breakfast, enjoy opportunities to explore and better understand the ecosystems that make up and power this diverse region. This afternoon, the ship sails out through La Entrada, leaving Magdalena Bay behind. Traveling south along the coast of the peninsula, there is a chance of seeing a wide variety of marine life, including the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale. Hear naturalist talks and learn photography basics.

Start off the day with a majestic sunrise over the iconic Friars Rocks at Land’s End. Spend the rest of the morning searching the seas of Gorda Banks seamount, a renowned gathering place for whales, especially humpbacks, dolphins and other sea life. Following lunch, set out to snorkel the pristine reefs of Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, one of the most successful national marine parks in the world, and chat with locals about their advocacy to protect this unique place.

Conditions permitting, anchor off the rocky island of Los Islotes. Don your provided flippers, mask and snorkel, and swim with curious sea lions. The ship then repositions to the colorful city of La Paz where you can garner insight into the culture of Mexico, soak in the vibrant street art and stroll the lively Malecon. Dinner will be an unforgettable cultural experience, complete with local cuisine, dancing and folklore.

Today is flexible to explore some uninhabited islands. The captain and expedition leader will choose the perfect combination of activities for the day. You may go ashore at Isla San Francisco, where a sweeping arc of white sand beach beckons you to kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Or perhaps you’ll visit Bahía de Los Muertos to snorkel among the coral.

Disembark in Loreto after breakfast and transfer to the city center. Schedules permitting, take the opportunity to visit the first mission in Baja California, as well as the nearby museum to learn more about what makes this town so special. Enjoy free time to explore the quaint shops and vibrant side streets. After lunch, transfer to Loreto Airport for flights home.

Featured in this Traveler Review

We had a truly magical time in Baja...Mom and I will never forget the experience for the rest of of our lives. I was blessed to be able to touch and feel the whale for a considerable amount of time, as he or she stayed by my side with the head lifted out of the water for a good while. It was a spiritual experience, and I could not breathe well or talk for the entire time, as I was so overwhelmed with emotions. In addition, I met some fantastic people on the ship, more so than in any other trips. While not every day was equally great, the intimate whale encounter on the last day was a true dream come true. I was so overwhelmed with emotions that I will never forget the moment for as long as I live. The trip was overall outstanding.

We had a room with a balcony. Saw many birds (pelicans and gulls) following the ship and fishing throughout the night just outside of our balcony. It was a great little room.

COVID Logistics

In general, it was a very friendly and open environment, despite the COVID pressure.

Itinerary Review

While we did not get to snorkel with the young California sea lions due to wind (had to completely skip that), and there weren’t too many whales or dolphins while making the journey to the Pacific side, we had one absolutely enchanting morning with the whales on the last day—one came right up to the boat and hung out with us. The trip was worth it just for that morning.

Another spectacular sighting was to see about a hundred brown boobies swarming the cliffside of Isla Danzante and diving into the ocean in perfect unison on our first full day. It was as if they were herding the fish from just the above the water — all of them moving so fast in complete unison. There were birds — brown pelicans, boobies — diving all over the place as we watched from the top of the cliff. It was simply breathtaking! That, I thought, was the magic of Baja! The Vista Walk to the top of the cliff gave us an incredible sighting of numerous brown boobies dive-bombing down the cliff. I had never seen so many boobies flying and diving in unison, coming back out of the water, gliding over the water's surface with such speed and agility. I was completely mesmerized. Also, we had our first encounters with the jumping cactus and a very impressive Cordone cactus that was several times my height.

We did not get to kayak nearly as often as I thought, and I hoped for more intimate encounters with the birds, but overall, mom and I think that one morning with the gray whale was worth the entire admission.

Isla San Francisco - amazing clear turquoise waters, thousands of fish -- some very colorful and beautiful, Sally Lightfoot crabs, pelicans diving in front of my kayaks, and the ridge walk with the perfect view of the gorgeous Moon bay and desert vegetations. Adrian also showed us a Chugwala.

By far, the most incredible experience was on the last day at Bahia Almejas. Unlike at Magdalena bay where I felt that we were chasing after the mother-calf gray whale pair, the last day felt very different. We were in a very large body of water, and the whales surrounded us. One particular friendly gray whale came to our boats and stayed with us, lifting its beautiful head out of the water and allowing us to touch and kiss him. He or she stayed by my side for a long while, allowing me to take a very close look at all the barnacles and whale lice, and to feel him and talk to him. It was truly an once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

The menu was not variable enough to my liking -- always fish similarly prepared, beef/port of some sort, and vegetarian choices. I did mostly enjoy the fish options. The dining staff was really excellent. I met some of the best companions on this trip, and we have exchanged contact information. We are already in correspondence and hope to make other trips together. One family of 3, in particular, made the week particularly enjoyable. The meals times with this family were so much fun that I nearly cried every time from laughing so hard.

Crew & Guides Review

Of course I treasured learning about the plant species, and the naturalists were (particularly the Mexican biologists) were so knowledgeable that I loved listening to them. The naturalists, particularly Adrian and Carlos - the two Mexican biologists - were true experts of the region's fauna, marine life, and various Sonoran desert ecosystems. Shane Sanders, another naturalist, photographer, and bird expert, took great care to help correct the settings on my camera and took particular effort to be sure that mom and I had the best opportunities for whale and bird watching. While Sarah was very responsive to my requests, I felt as though she did not have the typical energy of an expedition leader. Lindblad was very responsive to my requests to add a bird walk on couple of different days.

Andrew Browning is simply the best. He is the most reliable, responsive, detail-oriented, and meticulous travel guide I have ever had. I could not ask for anyone better and feel extremely fortunate to have had the chance to work with Andrew. He made all the difference!!! I really missed him when he was away on paternity leave. Andrew Browning at AdventureSmith has been one of the best parts of the whole process. He is as honest and trustworthy as he is thoughtful and meticulous. He takes such complete care of you that I would always want to work with Andrew in particular to prepare and book a trip whenever possible. One just cannot get better guidance than what Andrew can offer.

Traveler Advice

I have always wanted to go to Baja for marine mammals and bird watching. While we did not get to see any huge pods of dolphins or humpback whales up and close (did see a few in the distance), the close encounter with the gray whales on the last day made up for the previously lackluster whale encounters. It's hard not to expect fantastic encounters with wildlife when you go to a place like Baja, but the encounters are highly unpredictable as is the wind and water. One has to do his or her best to remain flexible and have an open mind and be willing to enjoy whatever happens and appreciate it. There is true magic to Baja, and it is heartwarming to see places that can not only recover from human destruction but also thrive.

Carnival Firenze Arrives in Long Beach Ahead of Inaugural Cruise

  • April 24, 2024

Carnival Firenze

Carnival Cruise Line’s new Carnival Firenze has arrived in California ahead of its inaugural cruise. After a month-long repositioning voyage that started in Spain, the 2021-built vessel docked in Long Beach for the first time on April 23, 2024.

Sailing around South America, the Carnival Firenze also made technical stops in the Canary Islands, Argentina, and Chile before arriving in California. The ship is fresh off its conversion from Costa to Carnival at Navantia (pictured).

The Vista-Class ship is now scheduled to set sail on its maiden voyage from the port on April 25, 2024. On that day, the Carnival Firenze kicks off a program of three- to seven-night cruises to the Mexican Riviera, California and Baja Mexico.

Ports of call include Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta, in addition to Catalina Island.

For its maiden voyage, the Firenze is scheduled to offer a seven-night cruise to the Mexican Riviera. The itinerary features three full days at sea, as well as visits to Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas.

Previously operated by Costa Cruises, the Carnival Firenze joins Carnival Cruise Line’s new Carnival Fun Italian Style concep.

The product combines the company’s traditional venues, service, and experiences with an Italian vibe and atmosphere.

With a design inspired by the Italian city of Florence, the 4,232-guest ship offers themed public areas and staterooms. One of the main dining rooms is named after Michelangelo, the Renaissance sculptor and painter that was born in the city.

The Carnival Firenze also offers signature venues of the Carnival Cruise Line fleet, including an Italian-themed version of Guy’s Burger Joint, a European-themed Limelight Lounge and a complete Hero’s Tribute Bar.

Also unique to the vessel and its sister ship Carnival Venezia is a customized livery, which combines Costa’s funnel with Carnival’s new hull design. As a nod to the ship’s roots, however, the red stripe on the hull was painted yellow.

A view of a beach from a height. The water is a nright blue, and these are rocks on either end of the deserted beach

"Rocky, wild and unpredictable" — why Baja California is ideal offroading country

Unfurling for more than 750 miles down a stick-thin peninsula, Baja California has long been known for water adventures — but new off-roading tours help travellers see it from a different perspective.

Gripping the roof handle and staring silently over the dashboard, I avert my gaze from the 160ft drop to my left. There’s just six inches of dirt road standing between us and the cliff edge: one wrong move from our driver, and the pickup truck we’re in is going straight into the Sea of Cortez.

The first time I visited Mexico’s Baja California, the world’s second-longest peninsula, it was on a backpacking trip through Central America. I hitchhiked and bussed over 650 miles from Tijuana, on the border with the US, to Todos Santos, just short of Baja’s most southerly point, Cabo San Lucas. Travelling along the Carretera Transpeninsular, I stopped at every major town along Baja’s main highway, wine-tasting in Ensenada, whale-watching in Guerrero Negro and swimming with sea lions on Espiritu Santo Island.

During those long drives, I’d stare out at the stark desert landscape for hours: salt-encrusted greasewood shrubs and giant cardón cacti sprouted from swathes of sand and clay-red mountains, which often turned candyfloss pink at sunset. But what caught my eye were the narrow dirt tracks, hundreds of them crisscrossing the desert like a map drawn in the sand, veering off the highway towards sun-baked sierras and hidden turquoise coves. One day, I thought to myself, I’d return to Baja California to see where those roads led.

Five years on, I’ve come to La Paz, in the south of the Baja California peninsula, to join Baja Expeditions’ first-ever overlanding trip. The company has specialised in whale-watching, kayaking and wild camping in the state since the 1970s, but has recently branched out with off-roading tours to encourage visitors to explore the peninsula’s less-visited interior.

A mobula ray jumping out of the ocean into view of the camera.

“People think Baja is just beaches and whales,” says our driver Mike Thorneycroft, a Canadian who moved to Baja California in 2020. “But it’s more than that. These trips are about getting people out of the resorts and into Baja’s least-visited communities, and learning some of their history and culture.”

Mike gets us past the cliff edge safely, manoeuvring around asteroid-sized potholes and boulders with ease as we climb up and over Sierra de la Laguna, part of a mountain range that connects Baja California Sur, the southern state of Baja California, with southern California in the US.

On slightly wider roads, I start to relax and take in the views: unlike the parched desert I’d seen from the highway years ago, these mountains are lush from recent hurricane rains, flourishing with lime-green mesquite trees and pink and yellow wildflowers. We cross arroyos — dry riverbeds that fill up after heavy rainfall — flowing with crystalline water, where orange butterflies and free-roaming piglets from a nearby ranch are taking a drink. A vulture and a flaming red cardinal bird join soon after.

“Baja California is perfect for off-roading,” says Mike, who organises and competes in long-distance off-road rallies across the state. “The roads are rocky, wild and unpredictable, changing quickly in the rainy season. But that’s what makes it exciting.”

Near the former silver-mining town of   El Triunfo, we stop at the Santuario de los Cactus, a community-run garden with some   of the oldest and rarest cacti on earth, including the cardón, the world’s largest cactus. The garden’s grey-moustached volunteer caretaker, Guadalupe ‘Lupe’ Gonzalez, shows us around, pointing out which cacti fruits are edible and how to extract water from their flesh. He also shows us cacti species used to treat kidney stones, stomach aches and open wounds.

“I learnt about the medicinal properties of cacti from the rancheros (ranchers),” says Lupe, caressing the spines of a 400-year-old cactus as if they were whiskers. He’s been caring for the plants here for more than 30 years and offers guided tours of the garden for a small donation. “But this knowledge comes from the Indians. There are none left here now, but we know how to survive in the desert because of them.”

A lone cacti in the desert in Mexico.

Before the Spanish arrived, Baja California was inhabited by three major Indigenous groups: the Cochimí, the Guaycura and the Pericú. Ancient rock paintings in Sierra de San Francisco, around 465 miles north of where I am and described by UNESCO as some of the most impressive collections of rock paintings in the world, suggest that these tribes had lived on the peninsula for at least 10,000 years.

Although the Spanish colonised Baja California much later than Mexico’s mainland, around the late 17th century, the culture and history of these local Indigenous groups was erased more quickly than in the rest of Mexico. Some experts believe this is because the region’s Indigenous groups were nomadic hunter-gatherers, who lacked the big cities and societal structures that helped preserve the legacies of the Mayans and Aztecs in other Mexican states. Today, very few Indigenous groups remain, with most living in the north of Baja California.

After a few hours of driving along the spectacular Barriles Santa Teresa coastal road, we make the steep descent to Palo Blanquito beach, where we’ll be spending the night. It’s a wild strip of sand, where milky-red cliffs crumble into a dazzling turquoise sea studded with volcanic rock. Come sunset, it’s just our truck on the beach and a flock of pelicans floating on the dead-still water, like rubber ducks in a jade-coloured bath. We eat refried beans and chicken burritos under the stars, watching a brilliant-white crescent moon rise over the water. That night, I sleep to the sound of the waves lapping gently at the shoreline.

The next morning, I watch the beach come to life from my tent. As the sun rises above the horizon, the sea turns from liquid silver to light pink, illuminating the inside of the tent with a warm glow. A family of pelicans — each one resembling a light aircraft — skim across the water with mouths agape, hoping to catch one of the flying fish backflipping through the air. Eager to join the action, I roll out of the tent and into the sea, plunging head first into the crystal-clear water with my mask and snorkel. Below the surface is an underwater city made of coral and volcanic rock, and colourful fish: I see a long, translucent cornetfish; a tiny cortez rainbow wrasse; and an enormous shoal of California yellowtail, the soft morning light bouncing off their tinfoil-like skin. It’s tempting to stay longer on this wild, empty beach, lounging on the rocks and floating in the warm turquoise waters as the resident pelicans do. But Mike has packed up camp and started the engine — it’s time to continue our journey through the desert roads of Baja California. “That’s the thing with overlanding,” says Mike, opening the passenger door for me to get in. “There’s always one more road to explore.”

Florence in California: Carnival launches new Italian-style cruise ship

cruises in baja california

Carnival Cruise Line is bringing a touch of Italy to Southern California.

The line launched Carnival Firenze, inspired by its namesake city, this week. The vessel sailed its maiden voyage from its Long Beach homeport on Thursday.

“We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship is giving us the opportunity to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach,” Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto!”

The ship is the second in the Carnival Fun Italian Style concept after sister ship Carnival Venezia joined the fleet last summer. Both were originally part of Costa Cruises – also owned by parent company Carnival Corp. – before being rehomed.

Where will Carnival Firenze sail?

The roughly 5,000-guest ship will offer Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises ranging from three to seven days. Stops include destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Catalina Island.

What can guests expect on board?

Built in 2020, Firenze was refurbished earlier this year to add Carnival-specific touches. Those include staple venues like the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse and JavaBlue Cafe.

But the line leans into the ship’s Italian motif. The ship’s atrium was designed with Florence’s Piazza del Duomo in mind and the Lido deck takes influence from the Italian Riviera. There’s even a replica of Michelangelo’s David on board that was previously on Carnival Pride (the real sculpture is located in Florence’s Accademia Gallery).

The theme extends to the food and drink options, with eateries like Italian specialty restaurant Il Viaggio, Mexican-Italian fusion venue Tomodoro and La Strada Grill, serving Italian street food. Frizzante specializes in bubbly drinks, and passengers can sip craft cocktails and Italian coffee at Amari.

Other features include the WaterWorks water park and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

How long should I take a cruise?: Here's how short and long cruises compare

How much does Carnival Firenze cost?

Prices vary based on sailing date and other factors, but a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise departing on May 30 currently starts at $409 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival’s website . The fare includes much of the food on the ship, drinks like regular coffee and iced tea and more.

Carnival Firenze

Carnival Cruise Line has officially christened its newest ship, Carnival Firenze , at Long Beach in California.

Hollywood actor Jonathan Bennett, godfather of Carnival Firenze, hosted the ceremony alongside Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy.

Bennett is well known for appearing in the 2004 movie Mean Girls and has since gone on to star in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and Love Wrecked and hosting programs for the Food Network.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said, “Jonathan is a true brand ambassador for Carnival.

He is friendly and welcoming to everyone and embodies the Carnival-style of fun.”

“After he sailed on the first voyage of Carnival Firenze’s sister ship, Carnival Venezia, last May, he told me it would be his dream to be the godfather of one of our ships, so how could I turn down such a request for such a terrific friend to Carnival” Duffy added.

Jonathan Bennett said: “This is a fantastic honor, and I’m so proud to know I’ll always be a part of the Carnival Firenze family.

When I told Christine I’d love to be a Carnival cruise ship godfather, I never thought she’d take my request seriously.”

“I have so much respect for the Carnival team and how they’re dedicated to caring for their guests, the ocean, and each other,” Bennett added.

Carrying 5,000 guests, Carnival Firenze is sailing year-round from Long Beach, offering three to seven-day Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera sailings.

She will also feature new Italian concepts from a brand new specialty restaurant for Carnival, Il Viaggio, Italian for ‘The Voyage’ — to Festa Italiana , a top-deck street party.

Carnival Firenze is the first ship in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet to utilize new technology and artificial intelligence to create energy-saving routes on each sailing, which will be rolled out across the entire fleet later this year.

Christine Duffy said: “We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now Carnival Firenze is allowing us to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach.

The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto.”

La Paz Mexico Port Guide

Nestled between the Sierra Laguna mountains and the Sea of Cortez on the Baja California peninsula lies the laid-back port of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur. The name translates to “The Peace,” and this lovely spot indeed offers a relaxing, enriching vacation.

On a Baja California cruise, relax on some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in the Mexican Riviera. Stroll the 20-block waterfront Malecón and admire spectacular sunsets. Dine on the freshest seafood and world-class cuisine. Discover why Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez “the aquarium of the world.” Snorkel with gentle whale sharks. Search for blue whales migrating, manta rays gliding, and dolphins jumping.

While we don't currently sail to La Paz, you can still discover the beauty of Mexico on one of our cruises to the Mexican Riviera .

Top sights & attractions for cruises to la paz, balandra beach.

A short drive north of La Paz brings you to a beautiful soft sand beach with three glittering bays, warm shallow water, and gentle currents. You can wade out hundreds of yards through this breathtaking azure water. Climb a path to the top of the nearby hill for spectacular views of the bays, the mountains, and the Sea of Cortez. Or, simply snorkel, kayak, or paddleboard and enjoy the marine life all around you.

The center of activity in La Paz is the stunning Malecón waterfront boardwalk. Stroll the 3.5-mile-long promenade, where you can marvel at ancient architecture, listen to music, stop at restaurants, art galleries, and shops, grab an ice cream cone, or watch the fantastic sunset over the water.

Espiritu Santo Island

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this uninhabited island is where you can experience world-class water sports like scuba diving, snorkeling, and sea kayaking. On land, trek the trails and see cactus, 98 species of birds, and colonies of sea lions. In the water, you’ll come across colorful parrotfish, moray eels, rainbow wrasse, angelfish, manta rays, dolphins, and sea turtles. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Top Things to Do in La Paz

Whale shark encounters.

La Paz is one of the very few places in the world where you can swim with peaceful whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea. Snorkel alongside them each year from October to May, when these gentle giants visit the area's waters to feast on a bounty of krill and plankton. Swim with the whales on a snorkeling tour or take a day cruise to watch the whales up close.

Sandboarding

On a cruise to La Paz, travel inland to one of the area’s sand dunes for a thrilling sandboarding experience. Rent a board and “surf” the dunes without getting wet. Stand, sit, or lie on the board—the choice is yours.

Sport Fishing

Take an excursion to go offshore fishing in the bountiful waters of the Sea of Cortez. Anglers here can catch yellowfin tuna, marlin, grouper, snapper, dorado, and many other species of fish. Guides will take you to the best spots for fishing, so don’t forget your camera to document your catch.

Top Food & Drink Spots Near La Paz Cruise Port

As you stroll the Malecón, you’ll see many restaurants and food stalls offering fresh seafood, artisanal cheese, and other local delicacies. Of course, fish tacos and margaritas are a staple in Mexico, but the La Paz area is well-known for local delicacies.

Try an order of chocolate clams, named for their color and not their flavor. Fresh-caught tuna, ceviche, octopus, and other treasures from the sea are ubiquitous in La Paz, but you can also find international cuisine at many of the area’s restaurants. Damiana is a Mexican shrub that has a woody, minty flavor and is used to make artisanal chocolates and flavorful margaritas. Ask your bartender to use it instead of triple sec. From street food to fine dining, La Paz has it all.

Culture & History of La Paz

La Paz was first inhabited by Stone Age hunter-gatherers who left traces of their presence in the form of rock paintings found throughout the Baja California Peninsula. The area’s modern history begins with the landing of Hernán Cortés, who sailed here 14 years after overthrowing the Aztec Empire in 1535. He named the bay Santa Cruz, but in 1596, Admiral Sebastian Vizcaino arrived and renamed it La Paz.

La Paz was a Spanish possession until Mexico gained its independence in 1822. It became the capital of Baja California in 1830 and La Paz remained the capital of Baja California Sur when the peninsula was split in two. Today, La Paz has a population of nearly 250,000. Spanish is universally spoken in La Paz, and many of the shopkeepers and restaurant staff also speak English.

La Paz Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Your ship docks in the port of Pichilingue, which is about 10 miles north of La Paz. Upon your arrival, the port comes alive with entertainers performing local music and dance. It also contains many outdoor market stalls where you can buy local food, gifts, and other necessities.Taxi fares to town are around $10 USD.

Transportation in La Paz

The city is relatively small, so it’s easy to get around on foot. Other options for traveling a bit further include buses, taxis, tours, and collectivos—large vans that transport a group of people heading in the same direction. Taxis are readily available throughout the area, and bike rentals can be found near the malecón waterfront boardwalk.

Shopping Near the La Paz Cruise Port

In this walkable city, you will find many opportunities to purchase mementos to remind you of your Baja California cruise. Peruse one of the numerous art galleries for art by local artists. Pick up some Mexican coffee or chocolate for family back home. Colorful Talavera pottery is another great choice. And of course, take home authentic tequila to sip with friends as you tell them about your trip.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso. Carry a little bit of cash for tips, minor purchases, or taxis while you’re in La Paz. You’ll find ATMs are plentiful, and credit cards are recommended for purchases at boutiques or more expensive shops. U.S. dollars (USD) are also accepted in many establishments throughout La Paz. A tip of 10%-20% is appropriate for tour guides and in restaurants. In bars and lounges, the customary tip is $1 a drink.
