Northern Vietnam Cycling Tour: Mai Chau to Pu Luong

My family and I have had the pleasure of doing several tours with Mr. Biker Saigon. Thai and his crew are THE BEST -- they are experienced, organized, responsive, and extremely knowledgeable about the routes and local communities. One of our trips involved a group of 14 riders with different abilities. Each day during the four-day tour, Thai and his team provided us with several options to make sure everyone felt comfortable and also challenged. We lived in Vietnam for three years and these bike tours with Mr. Biker Saigon were the highlights of our stay in this beautiful country.

Cycling Mekong Delta in Vietnam 5 Days

We had an amazing time on this tour, and it more than beat our expectations. The support vehicle allowed us to avoid the "less than ideal" roads to cycle on and allowed us to spend our time enjoying the nicer more interesting routes. We rode through beautiful Rice fields and villages, along the river, through rural areas. There were lots of additional activities included such as the floating market and floating village, plus a few additional things we weren't expecting. Ngan/Mr Leo was an excellent guide, and was one of the best we have had on any tour. He was knowledgable, communicative, approachable and led the cycling at a pace that suited us well. He even invited us to his home and introudced us to his family for dinner. He is a great asset to the company, and we feel very fortunate to have had him as our guide. It is worth noting that this tour was advertised as being with e-bikes. However, standard mountain bikes were provided (Trek Marlin 5). This was not an issue for us, as the area is very flat, and we are used to cycling 50-60km a day. However, those who are relying on e-bikes should confirm that these will be provided. Additionally, although mountain bikes are appropriate for the rough and bumpy terrain found on parts of this tour, It might be worth the company replacing the mountain bike seats with more comfortable touring seats. Mountain bike seats are not designed to be sat on for 50km at a time, and even with the gel covers provided, they were painfully uncomfortable by the third day. The only critical feedback we would give is that the hotels are quite high end, and a budget accommodation choice would have been appreciated as a reduced cost option. Also, more importantly, we felt the bikes could do with receiving a little more maintenance, particularly given this is a 5 day tour. On one of the bikes we had, the brakes barely worked and had to be pulled very hard to slow down, and they made a very loud noise when applied. This is not really ideal for a 5 day tour, and could have been very dangerous. On the other one, the handlebar grips were perished and breaking away into rubber flakes and caused blisters on the hands and needed gloves to be worn (although it was too hot for them really). Overall the trip was one of the best trips we have taken part in and one of the best experiences we have had whilst travelling (over 80 countries). We wouldn't hesitate to reccommend it to anyone (and already have).

Our guide Mai Thieu was fabulous and meant we had a great time and saw parts of Hoi A that we would not have accessed on our own. He was the perfect guide and happy to match the riding to our needs. Couldn’t recommend him and the whole tour more highly. Fantastic way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary!

I went on a very special tour Mr. Biker Saigon organised, partnered with H2H charity ride. Everything was so professionally planed and executed that really made a difference. It was a very meaningful experience I will always remember. Thanks for creating wonderful memories Thai and crew(!

Cycling Vietnam Tour

Cycling Vietnam

The trip was described as a trip to Vietnam primarily by biking but was instead a bicycle trip with Vietnam as a backdrop. The trip was so demanding in terms of biking and most of the rest of the time was spent on buses traveling from place to place that we didn’t get to actually experience most of the sights that were described in the itinerary and had almost no connection to any locals other than our guide. Our guide saw himself as a biking guide and gave us little information about the country, its people, history, etc. His English was difficult to understand particularly his comprehension of questions or comments. He also wanted to please all the participants and was not adept in dealing with interpersonal issues.

Vietnam Motorbike Tour from Hanoi to Hoi An, Da Nang on Ho Chi Minh Trail & Along the Coast

We had a small group of 3 plus a guide from Hanoi to Saigon. Mr Dong and the DNQ Travel company are very professional so have no fear of the trip not being well organised or fraud. Their communication with customers is also very prompt. Our guide was excellent, breakdowns like flat tyres or clutch cable breaks - he managed. The bikes were Honda CRF 250cc and were fantastic over any terrain. We biked through 2 typhoons and other wet weather - well one was mostly on a re8st day!

Danke

Road Biking the Ho Chi Minh Highway Tour

Road Biking the Ho Chi Minh Highway

Go now before Vietnam changes. It was an epic tour into small towns and villages where people stopped to stare at us, ask to have photos taken with us,and where children ran to the road to wave and shout hello. The scenery is beyond description. The towns are changing rapidly as the Ho Chi Minh Highway brings the desired economic development to this region of Vietnam. In a few years it will be impossible to repeat this experience.

Vietnam by Bike

Very well planned, everything worked well, only on the day of arrival in Saigon I would skip the visit to the craft beer pub and instead go for a nice and authentic place for lunch as we arrived hungry after the flight from Danang. Also I would propose a ride through Saigon with the van and see the most interesting sights because its such a big city to see on foot.

Cycling Vietnam Saigon - Hanoi Tour

Cycling Vietnam Saigon - Hanoi

Having been to Vietnam before, we booked this tour as a new way of experiencing this wonderful country. It did not disappoint. With Tung's expert guidance we explored the highlands and central coast, mostly using little-travelled backroads that took us through grand scenery and busy villages, through rice fields, across passes and along countless shrimp farms and monuments to ancestors. We cycled a total of 500km in the 10 biking days, but the daily amount is flexible as the van accompanying us would enable a shortening (or extending) of daily distances. Taking our food preferences into account we were guided to local eateries and street food vendors where we experienced the best local dishes. Accomodations were excellent and the fact that we had nothing to worry about at all during the whole trip made this tour absolutely the best way to visit Vietnam. I wholeheartedly recommend their tour to anyone who is keen on some active exploration of Vietnam and hope to be able to return myself to do some more exploring with them!

Cycling Saigon to Hoi An Tour

It was an awesome adventure! I would highly recommend it. We saw beautiful countryside, the coast, and small villages. Our guide and driver were excellent at their jobs and took care of everything for us. It was a bicyclist dream vacation.

Cycle Vietnam

15 days | an unforgettable north to south cycling tour of vibrant vietnam.

Enjoy the scenery as you cycle through Vietnam

More than 30 million Vietnamese can't be wrong... handle-bar height gives you the best view of Vietnam! This cycling tour through a mesmerising country provides opportunities to meet the locals and experience their culture in a way that wouldn't otherwise be possible. So come and get active as you travel from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, down country lanes and over spectacular mountain passes. And, of course, all the exercise gives you the perfect excuse to indulge in delicious Vietnamese cuisine.

Trip overview

  • If you love to cycle, to feel the wind in your (helmet-covered) hair and a tropical breeze on your face then this speedy but comprehensive adventure is for you!
  • A bike lets you see Vietnam like never before – you’ll go from road to beaten track to something way beyond.
  • Think of the calories you’ll burn and the appetite you’ll work up cycling around Vietnam’s incredible landscape.
  • This two-wheeled adventure will show you all the different sides of this country – wildlife-filled natural landscapes, small villages, ancient ruins and the region’s liveliest cities.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, World Bicycle Relief. Donations provide school kids, health workers, and farmers in far-out areas with bicycles that provide access to education, healthcare, and income.
  • To complete this trip it is important that you are both confident and competent in riding a bicycle.
  • This trip covers quite some distance – you’ll be cycling for up to 70 kilometres a day on varied terrain, so this trip is for the reasonably fit.
  • You'll be spending one night in a homestay and another on an overnight sleeper train. While the accommodation is shared and basic, this is a great opportunity to interact with the locals, and get a real sense of Vietnamese daily life.
  • If you feel like doing all the riding but with less effort you'll have the option of hiring an electric bike.

Xin chao! Welcome to Vietnam. Your adventure officially begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. If you arrive early, work your legs with a walk around Hanoi’s charming shaded boulevards and squat on a short street-corner stool for a bia hoi (freshly brewed draught beer) in the Old Quarter, or join the queues at the famous Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. After your group meeting head out for an included dinner at the KOTO restaurant, Vietnam's first social enterprise.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Hanoi - KOTO dinner
  • Hanoi - One Pillar Pagoda - Free
  • Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh Complex - VND80000

If you are bringing your own bicycle with you on the trip, you need to assemble it to check for any damage in transit before the welcome meeting. If you have arranged for the hire of a bicycle, your leader will assist you in preparing the bike before your first cycling activity.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning you have some free time to explore the city at your leisure. Perhaps explore the vibrant Old Quarter, an architectural museum where blocks of ochre buildings give off the air of a 1930s provincial French town. In these ancient '36 Streets’ you can discover an amazing selection of shops that sell everything from souvenirs to exquisite silk clothing, jewellery, beautifully embroidered tablecloths, wood carvings and lacquerware - it's a bargain hunter's paradise.

This afternoon experience the thrill of cycling in Hanoi with a (relatively) quiet ride around the city's famed West Lake, considered by locals to be the best place to ride in Vietnam's biggest city. Take in the lovely lotus lakes, colonial villas as well as several iconic temples, including Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest in Vietnam, on this flat and relaxed introductory ride.

  • Hanoi - Museum of Ethnology
  • Hanoi - Fine Arts Museum - VND30000
  • Hanoi - Temple of Literature - VND70000
  • Hanoi - Women's Museum - VND30000
  • Hanoi - Hoa Lo 'Hanoi Hilton' Prison - VND50000
  • Hanoi - Army Museum - VND20000
  • Hanoi - Street Food Experience Urban Adventure - USD40

Your riding distance today will be approx. 22kms/14 miles, mostly flat with approx. 40m/130ft of elevation gain.

Due to ongoing negative client concerns about the constant queues (frequently exceeding 3 hours) we no longer visit the HCM Mausoleum in 2024.

Saddle up this morning as your cycling adventure kicks into first gear. Leave Hanoi behind and travel by bus to Hoa Binh, via a stop at Vun Art, a social enterprise run by people with disabilities and specialising in craft products made from Van Phuc silk. When you arrive in Hoa Binh you’ll jump on your bike and cycle to Cao Phong, through small ethnic Thai villages, enjoying the tranquility of the paddy fields and interacting with the local people. Limestone peaks climb in the background and banks of green line the road, and you’ll take regular stops to admire the view across the lush valleys. After arriving you’ll take a short bus ride for the next section, stopping for lunch at Man Duc.

After you fuel up, the bus will take you to the Da River Reservoir. Stretch your legs again cycling along the Da River, passing spectacular karst cliffs, through paddy fields, and admiring the lush panorama of the Mai Chau valley on the way. The peaceful town of Mai Chau is situated in a stunningly beautiful valley surrounded by verdant green mountains and is famed for its breathtaking scenery and friendly hilltribe peoples. Tonight you’ll enjoy local hospitality in a simple stilt-house homestay in the village of Poom Coong. Your amicable hosts will cook up a fabulous home-cooked meal, and there may even be a chance to sample some of the local rice wine produced in the region.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Mai Chau - Pom Coong Village visit & traditional lunch

Your travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours. Riding distances: Ride 1 - approx. 38kms/24 miles, uphill with approx. 330m/1080ft of elevation gain. Ride 2 - approx. 19kms/12 miles, mostly downhill with approx. 80m/260ft of elevation gain.

This morning you farewell your homestay hosts and cycle from Mai Chau to Mai Hai, and then on to Co Luong. You’ll ride through more paddy fields and test your riding skills (or suspension) with the shallow potholes that can be found on the road. Pass farmers riding atop their load drawn by lumbering water buffalo, ride through small towns and wave to friendly locals on your way through picture-perfect Vietnam – lush green fields, towering limestone mountains, tranquil waterways and charming historic sites.

A bus trip then takes you along the Ho Chi Minh Road with a lunch stop before Ninh Binh. If you arrive in Ninh Binh with time (and energy) to spare you can take a 36 km cycle around the surrounding area. This is a wonderful chance to see everyday rural life in action as well as take in the beautiful countryside.

Your riding distance today will be approximately 49kms/30 miles, mostly downhill with approx. 195m/640ft of elevation gain.

This morning you’ll cycle from Ninh Binh to Tam Coc, when you’ll really have the opportunity to soak up one of Vietnam’s most spectacular views – limestone karst peaks thrusting out of serene rice paddies, the sounds and views of the river, which winds through the fields and has boats parading up and down its length. You will also cycle to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam under the 10th-century Dinh Dynasty, the remains of which can be seen in the lasting beautiful archways and temples. Here you’ll take a lunch break at the Dinh or the Le Temple. Then it’s back on the bus to return to your hotel, where you can use the day room to take a shower and freshen up. After an early dinner you’ll transfer to Nam Dinh for an overnight train to Hue.

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Hoa Lu - Temple of King Dinh and King Le

Your riding distance today will be approximately 52kms/32 miles, undulating with approx. 195m/640ft of elevation gain.

On the overnight train to Hue (approximately 12 hours) conditions are basic, but it is a true Intrepid experience and the best way to travel long distances like a local. Sleeper trains typically have four berth compartments (occasionally six berth depending on seasonal variations and group configuration), which have bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. On occasion, passengers of different genders will be required to share a compartment and there will be occasions where you'll be sharing with local travellers or travellers who are not part of your group. Most trains have a dining carriage serving simple food, but some travellers take the opportunity to stock up on fresh bread, cheese and fruit prior to departure.

Arrive in Hue and hop back in the saddle to begin your exploration of the former imperial capital of Vietnam. Hue holds the treasures of Vietnam's royal past and is a curious mix of bustling streets and tranquil settings. Today you will ride through the fields to visit many of Hue's remarkable sites, including temples, bunkers, tombs, ruins, pagodas and spectacular scenery.

On your cycle you will visit the Imperial Citadel, including the Forbidden Purple City. The latter was almost totally destroyed during the Vietnam War's Tet Offensive, but the foliage-covered ruins are still atmospheric and the gaping holes left by bombs give an idea of the destruction wreaked upon the country during the war. The itinerary is flexible and you have ample time for stops along the way to admire the sites. Later, kick back in a cafe or restaurant. Hue’s cuisine is considered by many Vietnamese as the best in the country, and is influenced both by its imperial heritage (small dishes and a focus on aesthetic presentation) as well as its strong Buddhist heritage, reflected in the high proportion of vegetarian restaurants in the region. The bustling Dong Ba Market offers a wealth of goods and foods to see and snack on. It's a good place to try some of the local specialities that graced the Nguyen emperors' banquet tables, such as the ‘banh khoai’, Hue's answer to the pancake.

  • Hue - Imperial City Full Day Tour
  • Hue - Royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc

Your riding distance today will be approximately 16kms/10 miles, flat with approx. 12m/40ft of elevation gain.

Today will be big on riding and big on spectacular views. Leaving Hue, you will do some mountainous riding as you conquer the Hai Van (Ocean Cloud) Pass on the way to the tropical south and the laidback town of Hoi An. The pass is a stunning stretch of highway the winds through the Truong Son mountain range, with views across the Bay of Danang to the south. It is 500 m about sea level and the up/down slope ranges from 5-10%, and there will be plenty of well-earned breaks along the way to take in the views, snap some photos and rehydrate.

After the rewarding vistas on the cycle in, you’ll also be spoiled with the town of Hoi An – with lantern-lit streets, vibrant markets, skilled tailors, artisan shops, ancient houses, colourful temples and beautiful smiles, it’s a Vietnamese wonderland. Recently declared a World Heritage site, Hoi An is being beautifully restored and preserved, with parts of the town looking exactly like they did more than a century ago. This makes its streets of low tiled buildings perfect for strolling. Take the evening to soak up the atmosphere, or just rest your legs at a local restaurant after a day’s riding.

Your riding distance today: Ride 1 - approx. 56kms/35 miles, flat with approx. 55m/180ft of elevation gain. Ride 2 - approx. 30kms/19 miles, significant uphill & downhill with approx. 576m/1890ft of elevation gain.

This morning you leader with take you on a walking tour of the town, which used to be a busy port for the Cham people before the river silted up. There’s also a strong Chinese influence, and you’ll see it as you walk past the pagodas and assembly halls. On your tour you’ll take in a historic house (formerly home to a prominent trader), the Japanese Covered Bridge, a Chinese assembly hall and a museum. The afternoon is free for you to do whatever takes your fancy. For those who love to shop then Hoi An is a mecca, with much to browse and buy. There are original paintings, handcrafted woodwork, ceramics, embroidery, lanterns and more. If you want to get some new threads then the town is also famous for its tailoring – pick a fabric and a design and it’ll be ready the same day. If you feel like keeping active then there are the options to take a 15-20 km ride into the surrounding countryside, to cycle to nearby Cua Dai Beach, or to take a stroll through fields of rice, sesame, banana and peanuts.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44
  • Hoi An - Thu Bon river boat trip - VND100000
  • Hoi An - Private Hoi An: My Son Discovery - USD77

Continue south, down scenic Highway One on the road to Quy Nhon, one of the routes that is less visited by travellers, past paddy fields, wheat drying for Beer Hoi, and locals playing chess to Phu. Climb back on the bikes to cycle to the coastal city of Quy Nhon. The city is filled with long stretches of beach and relaxed boulevards, and as it’s pretty undiscovered by visitors, is a great place to get an authentic slice of coastal life.

Your riding distance today will be approximately 44kms/27 miles, undulating with approx. 255m/840ft of elevation gain.

Today’s cycle is one of the most breathtaking stretches of road you’ll ride – the highway hugs huge granite cliffs and looks out across the deep blue sea.

Following parts of the Reunification railway, you’ll enjoy scenery of islands and lagoons. Join the scooter riders on the waterfront promenade as you arrive in the idyllic coastal town of Nha Trang, once referred to as the 'Cannes of the Orient', and whose sandy palm-lined beach and island-dotted bay still make a pretty idyllic picture. Here there’s consistently good weather, a vibrant nightlife and excellent diving.

  • Nha Trang - Po Nagar Cham Tower

Your riding distance today: Ride 1 - approx. 75kms/47 miles – lightly undulating with approx. 165m/530ft of elevation gain. Ride 2 - approx. 19kms/12 miles - lightly undulating with approx. 140m/460ft of elevation gain.

Today you’ll swap your bike for a boat as you head out to explore the nearby islands. This excursion is often the highlight of the trip for many travellers, as you’ll get to know some of the locals and indulge in the beauty of the place. Starting on the main boat, you’ll then take a small basket boat to shore and visit a fishing village, snorkel in the turquoise waters and feast on a fresh seafood buffet for lunch. You can enjoy this rest day by lazing in a deck chair, going for another swim or perhaps taking a mud baths to soothe away sore muscles.

  • Hon Mun Island - Snorkelling
  • Nha Trang - Basket boat ride
  • Nha Trang - Boat trip
  • Nha Trang - Bao Dai Villa - VND120000
  • Nha Trang - Mud baths - VND280000

No included riding today.

Head up through the Bidoup-Nui Ba Pass into the cooler climes of the South Central Highlands, where some of the country's best fruits, flowers and coffee beans are grown. The road is winding and steep but if you're fit and ready for a challenge, you may want to conquer the whole mountain on your bike. If you're not so physically inclined, take it easy and flag a lift from the bus. Whichever way you choose to get to the top, you'll still be treated to magnificent views once you reach the summit. After a short photo stop here, you will descend to Dalat. One of Vietnam's most delightful cities, Dalat is a perfect base to explore this pleasant region. With an appealing Swiss-French feel, along with pleasant lakes, palaces, pine tree-covered hills, flower gardens and pagodas, Dalat is often called the 'city of eternal spring' for its temperate climate.

Your riding distance today: Ride 1 - approx. 57kms/35 miles, lightly undulating with approx. 160m/530ft of elevation gain. Ride 2 - approx. 15kms/9 miles, lightly undulating with approx. 110m/360ft of elevation gain.

This morning you’ll take a city tour of Dalat, making the journey to Bao Dai's striking regal summer palace. He was the final emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, and the last to rule Vietnam until 1945. You’ll then discover the wacky and weird architecture of Hang Nga Crazy House. Echoing Gaudi's unconventional designs, and described as a 'fairytale house', explore the twisted tree roots, cave shaped hallways and animal themed rooms of this surreal guesthouse. Drop by the train station and the central market before continuing to Di Linh, where tea is the main industry and there are large plantations in the surrounding hills. After lunch, pedal down the forest-lined Gia Bac Pass, then cycle along from Malam to Phan Thiet and it's beautiful beaches.

  • Dalat - Hang Nga Crazy House

Your riding distance today: Ride 1 - approx. 22kms/14 miles, mostly downhill with approx. 85m/280ft of elevation gain. Ride 2 - approx. 45kms/ 28 miles, mostly downhill with approx. 30m/100ft of elevation gain.

You’re on the home stretch now and it’s time for one last cycling splurge. Before heading for the big city, take in the views along the beach on your ride to Lang Long. After a picnic lunch, keep cycling to Cu Bi. From there it’s goodbye to your two-wheeled friend as you take the support bus the final leg to Ho Chi Minh City. Here daily life plays out on the streets and the dynamic atmosphere is a fascinating blend of old and new, East and West. Maybe spend the final night of your Vietnam adventure exploring the food stalls at Ben Thanh market or cheers to yourself and your new friends with a few glasses of street-side beer hoi.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - Reunification Palace - VND40000
  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum - VND40000

Your riding distance today will be approximately 56kms/35 miles, approx. mostly flat with hill at the end, approx. 125m/410ft of elevation gain

This is $30USD per person and would be used to purchase extra supplies of snacks, including nuts and other energy packed goodies. It is not a compulsory kitty, although will make the purchasing of snacks easier and more convenient for you. You can find out more information from your leader upon arrival.

Want an in-depth insight into this trip? Essential Trip Information provides a detailed itinerary, visa info, how to get to your hotel, what's included - pretty much everything you need to know about this adventure and more.

Star of Southeast Asia

Vietnam bike tours.

Hanoi  ·  Ho Chi Minh City  ·  Hoi An

Vietnam is a country benefiting from intense tourism interest, owing to its attractive subtropical climate, verdant landscapes, and the vibrant draw of its capital, Hanoi, and largest city, Ho Chi Minh City. It's a country of immense natural beauty, with 40% of its landmass defined by majestic mountains, and another 42% by richly tropical forests. The magnificent Mekong Delta River graces the south of the country, whilst the glittering coverings of rice paddies on Vietnam’s verdant hillsides form an iconic Southeast Asian vista that, once seen, is not easily forgotten.

Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV), forms the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia, bordering China to the north and Laos and Cambodia to the west. In the 20th Century, Vietnam was a country greatly troubled by conflict. Relics of the country’s resilience in fighting off French advances during the First Indochina War can be found in the Long Phuoc Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum of Ho Chi Minh City.

Whether you’re captivated by the verdant natural beauty of its mountains, rivers, and rice paddies, or by the phenomenal history of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, you’re guaranteed an entrancing experience in the star of Southeast Asia. A guided bicycle tour is an exceptional option for exploring the natural and historical wonders of Vietnam, from a bike ride through the emerald rice paddies along the Mekong Delta, to an urban day tour of discovery in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Take a ride to monumental temples boasting exquisitely colorful exteriors, such as the Cao Dai Temple and Jade Emperor Pagoda, or cycle through Vietnam’s subtropical jungles, immersing yourself in the exotic beauty of this entrancing country.

“It has a little bit of everything when it comes to culture, amazing food, beautiful people, exotic sights, sounds and profound history of love, bravery and resilience.”

Latin america, exploring vietnam by bicycle.

Bold, bustling, and vibrant. Vietnam offers adventure of all kinds, from within its cities to its majestic countryside. Engaging and inviting locals. Surprisingly sophisticated cuisine. And beautiful views around nearly every bend make Vietnam one of the most rewarding cycling destinations in Southeast Asia.

Stunning Scenery

Even at its thinnest point, just 50 kilometers across, Vietnam dazzles with one breathtaking view after another. Sprawling rice terraces and limestone peaks dominate the North, while mist-shrouded mountains give way to picturesque white sand beaches in the South. From bottom to top, Vietnam packs in more fantastic scenery than any other country in the region.

Cultural Pride

Vietnam today is indescribable without mention of the brutal conflict that took place half a century ago. Never one to be defined by the outside, Vietnam sees itself as anything but “war torn.” Bold, but friendly. Eager, but sincere. As you encounter the locals, you’ll find a proud people, ready for a chance to show you their culture on their own terms.

Since our groups never have more than 10 travelers, we stay in small, authentic accommodations that can’t take large tour groups. MTB Vietnam offers basic amenities and simple comforts with an emphasis on the character of your destination because it depends on the place you are staying in each destination, home-stay or small hotels. But actually, the hotels in our programs are 2-3 star ones with standard and deluxe rooms with wifi and warm shower. If you choose a basic tour, you will share in a twin-room.

The cost you pay for your trip includes everything related to your tour which we mention in each specific tour on our MTBVietnam.Com webpage!

We have designed a range of tours to suit every kind of cyclist from off road mountain biking in Vietnam and cycling in Laos. All level can join our cycling trips!

Vietnam is a long country with several distinct climatic zones. The best time to take our bike tour is December – March, which is the Vietnamese winter. November is also a good time although you might strike the end of the monsoon season and have one or two wet days.

In the Far North of Vietnam, March – May or October – December are the best times to visit (January and February, which are the height of winter, can be too cold).

The winds from January on will mostly come from the north, so it is best to bike from the north to the south. The wind is not so strong in November/December.

We strongly recommend you take out travel, accident, medical, baggage and cancellation insurance. Medical Evacuation insurance is compulsory in Vietnam and India.

For New Zealand, you can purchase travel insurance from Southern Cross Travel Insurance.

For Australia, you can compare travel insurance policies.

For Vietnam, check your medical policy to see if Medivac type air transport is included in your policy (or Aflac type supplemental policy) first. If not you can buy medical insurance only at Access America or CSA Travel Protection.

A full cancellation policy is the only way to cover yourself for any problem that may happen before the trip.

What Client Say

As a family of four we did a 4 day , 3 night cycling tour around the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh to Chau Doc . It was the highlight of our trip so far largely thanks to our amazing guide Ut and lovely driver Kit, we saw so much that we wouldn’t have been able to any other way, and seeing the people getting ready for Tet was fantastic, although they all took time to shout hello and high five you along the way. The accomodation at the homestay in particular was excellent as was the food, and I have never slept so well. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience.

We booked SinhBalo Adventure Travel from home having read the reviews on TA and our party of 4 adults opted for the 2 nights and 3 days cycling and boating around the Mekong Delta. From start to finish the whole trip was very well organised, professional and did exactly what it said on the tin. We were very pleased with the whole experience and trip.

We did the Can Tho / hotel stay bike and boat tour with SinBalo, which was a highlight of our Vietnam Trip. Ut was a fantastic guide, a Mekong Delta local giving us a lot of information and answering our many questions. He and the van driver were good-natured, friendly, professional, and responsible.

We did a 3 day orivate cycking tour with asinhbalo in the Meking Delta. Everything was great: the bikes were very good and well looked after, the driver in the support car was quite good, an waitedmfor us with cold water and nice wet towels at the end of each cycling segment. The guide looked after us in the bits of rozds which were busy without being over-protective.

Trip Extensions

Day 1: arrive and cycle hue.

You will commence your tour in the historic city of Hue, the last seat of Imperial power in Vietnam. A Grasshopper Self-guided representative will meet with you at your hotel to deliver your equipment, conduct a briefing on the road and travel conditions in Vietnam and explain how to use the technology provided. You will then try out your new wheels on a loop ride explore the many faces of this tranquil city with its crumbling citadel walls, atmospheric Perfume River and colonial French architecture.

Day 2: Cycle Hue to Lang Co

Once you clear the city limits you will find yourself on country roads with only an occasional vehicle passing by. Rice fields will give way to low sand dunes and farmers’ homes begin to transition into fishing cottages as the ocean finally comes into view. You’ll then enjoy pedaling some rolling hills weaving in and out of the coastline throughout the day, there will also be plenty of delicious Vietnamese food along the way to fuel your ride. Reaching the vast Cau Hai Lagoon, nested against a dramatic mountain backdrop you will also catch the first glimpse of the ocean. You can expect to encounter very few other people here aside from local Vietnamese families. Take our recommendations for the best local eateries to satisfy your appetite.

Day 3: Cycle Lang Co to Hoi An

Today, you will start cycling on small hills that will prepare you for the challenging but scenic climb up the Hai Van Pass. A well-made road snakes its way up the mountain, offering views over the ocean and lagoon below. The majority of traffic goes through an alternative tunnel, so you can expect to enjoy pedaling a quiet road with a relaxed gradient. The descent down the other side is of equal distance and will lead you along a coastal road into Da Nang, a bustling financial capital of the province. After a section of busier suburban roads you'll see Da Nang from the vantage points of two of its many famous bridges and visit the monument of Lady Buddha.

Finally, you will meet our representative who will transfer you to the ancient trade town of Hoi An that has withstood regular floods and multiple wars to remain wonderfully intact and charming as ever.

Day 4: Rest Day, Optional Countryside Ride

A day of rest will help prepare you for the riding ahead and allow you to explore the rich history and diverse architecture of this ancient town. There’s an excellent mix of modern and traditional food to enjoy, plus the beach is just a short ride away. Use our app to follow our recommendations of places to visit, or take a wander on your own. Alternatively, if you feel your lust for cycling has not been satiated enough to take a rest, you can take on our curated 28km ride of the city and surrounding countryside.

Day 5: Cycle My Son

Today you will have a ride that takes you from historic Hoi An to the enchanting My Son ruins, a cluster of ancient remains of Hindu tower-temples set amidst a leafy jungle valley. Once the primary intellectual and religious center of the kingdom of Champa, My Son was re-discovered by French archaeologists in the 19th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The cycling route will take you across rivers and through picturesque countryside, along rural back roads accessible only by bike and hidden from most tourist routes. Passing small villages and rice fields, inquisitive locals will greet you along the way, it will be a day of smiles, history and tranquillity, before meeting your driver and transferring back to lovely Hoi An for the evening.

Day 6: Cycle Hoi An to Tam Ky

As you leave Hoi An, you'll likely see many of the market vendors bringing in their produce from the surrounding farms. Today's ride takes a gravel road through a collection of small fishing villages on another peninsula, where fish are farmed in ponds and ocean winds whip around the homes dotted along the shoreline. With a push from the sea breeze, you continue pedaling south towards the next stop, Tam Ky, the capital city of Quảng Nam Province. After a visit to its notable sights, you will go back towards the ocean and take a ferry to the small Tam Hai Island where your Vietnamese hosts await at a delightful resort.

Day 7: Cycle Tam Ky to Quang Ngai

Today is one of the few days where you will need to spend some of your ride along a major road. While you can expect to encounter more traffic while cycling, the road is very well made and the ride will be smooth. You’ll pass through some manufacturing districts before returning to small coastal roads and quaint villages, where seafood is pulled straight from the ocean and cooked for lunch. Once your belly is full, you have a short distance remaining to the university town of Quang Nai. Along the way, you pedal past the solemn but poignant Son My Memorial, the site of one of the most infamous crimes committed by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War – the My Lai Massacre. The memorial site contains a war history museum, gallery and an assembly of sculptures constructed in memory of the multiple civilian victims.

This is where you will meet with our representative who will transfer you back to Hoi An. If you have plans to stay in Quang Ngai or continue south, our representative will relieve you of the equipment. Alternatively, if you are ready to leave there are daily flights from Da Nang to major airports in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh city. If you would like to take a domestic flight then Chu Lai airport connects with all major Vietnamese airports.

If required, the Grasshopper Self-guided team can assist with booking further accommodation or transport for you. If your immediate plan is to board a flight or a train then our team will take you to a friendly hotel where you can use the facilities to freshen up before your flight.

I did the Vietnam self-guided coastal route, a beautiful trip taking you off the beaten track.

The scenery was beautiful and it was easy to follow the navigational guide. A great trip for cycle enthusiasts!

We’ve absolutely enjoyed the self-guided tour since it brought us into contact with the ‘other side’ of Vietnam.

Unexplored small roads, very friendly and curious villagers, lovely food and great sceneries. One of the best experiences to travel through a country!

Grasshopper looked after all the details so that we could relax and enjoy the riding. What a wonderful way to see more of Vietnam.

Coastal Vietnam is a narrow crescent-like coastal strip that is at times only 60 km wide. As a result, it experiences coastal weather phenomena such as high rainfall and occasional typhoons during the wet season that runs from September to December. Travelers during this season should be prepared for last-minute changes to the itinerary. The Best season to visit this region is from January to September with the average temperature hovering around 30°C.

Residents from a number of countries have visa exemption status for tourist visits to Vietnam. For a full list of up-to-date visa-exempt countries, see the Vietnam Foreign Affairs website .

Starting August 15, 2023, the Vietnam government will start offering an e-visa valid for up to 90 days with multiple entries, replacing the current 30-day, single-entry option. Furthermore, passport holders from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom will benefit from an extended visa exemption period of 45 days, up from the current 15 days. Eligible foreign nationals will either benefit from a longer duration of stay and greater flexibility with the extended e-visa validity of up to 90 days and multiple entries, or enjoy an extended visa exemption period of 45 days.

e-Visa – You can apply for an e-visa through the government website, then, once approved, simply print it out and present it upon arrival in Vietnam. The additional benefit of the e-visa is that it's valid at land borders, not just airports. The processing time ranges from 2 to 7 working days. We recommend applying 2 weeks in advance to avoid unexpected delays. Read more about tourist e-visas for Vietnam at the Vietnam Immigration portal and apply there.

While applying online for an approval letter, please ensure that you have the following documents:

  • Passport scanned copy: A scanned copy of your passport - front (main) page. It shouldn't be a mobile photo or a photo taken from a laptop. Strictly scanned copy done through a computer scanner.
  • Passport size photo: portrait photo (4*6 size, colored photo, white background, straight looking without glasses). A photo taken from a mobile or laptop may or may not work, so I would strictly advise getting one made through a nearby photo studio (retail shop) that specializes in taking photos for visas.

Here is an excellent resource on Vietnam visas that may be worth looking at.

EXCEPTIONAL

Like many travelers, I was worried about the reputation of "Art of Bicycles" before booking the trip because I had never used them before and I perused online reviews wherever I could find them... They were OVERWHELMINGLY positive and I was worried that it was too good to be true. Let me reassure you, they are absolutely EXCEPTIONAL! The forethought they put into our needs on the trip and the quick adjustments, kindness, and sense of urgency when anything additional was needed was just incredible. All of the accommodations were top notch and our guides were just AMAZING. I don't think we would have had even a fraction of the cultural experiences we enjoyed had we tried to do this trip ourselves. Art of Bicycles, you have won over a lifetime customer and I cannot wait for my next outing on the bike with you all at the helm. Thank you for taking such great care of us, and for the unforgettable experience!
