Dachigam National Park - History, Timings & Entry Fee

dachigam national park safari

India | Jammu & Kashmir | Srinagar

#15 of 31 places to visit in srinagar, distance (from srinagar): 17 kms, visited from: srinagar, trip duration (including travel): 3 hours, place location: not available, transportation options: cab, website: na, phone no: na, place address: na, travel tips: none.

At a distance of 17 km from Srinagar Bus Station, Dachigam National Park is a wildlife and environment conservation area located in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. Situated outside the city of Srinagar, it is one of the popular national parks in Jammu Kashmir , and among the top places to visit in Srinagar . With lush green environs, exotic flora, and fauna, Dachigam National Park is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and wildlife buffs. Dachigam literally means 'Ten Villages', which stands for the number of villages that were relocated to create the park. The area was previously a game preserve of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. Since 1910, the park became a protected area as it has the catchment area for Harwan Reservoir which supplies clean drinking water to the city of Srinagar. Later, it was declared as a National Park in the year 1981. Covering an area of more than 141 sq. km, Dachigam National park is located in the Zabarwan Range of the western Himalayas at an altitude ranging from 1600 m to 4200 m. Due to this vast variation, the park is divided into two regions - the upper region and the lower region. From dense forests to sprawling grasslands, it has a variety of ecosystems that are inhabited by various animals. The park is best known as the habitat of the last surviving population of Hangul, or Kashmir stag, the only species of red deer to be found in India. Musk Deer, Brown Bear, Long-tailed Marmots, Jungle Cats, Himalayan black bear, and a few species of wild goats like the markhor and ibex are the other inhabitants of the park. The elusive snow leopard is also found at a higher altitude and is the only predator. It also attracts ornithologists and birdwatchers as around 145 bird species can be spotted here which includes rare birds like Black Bulbuls, Cinnamon sparrows, Himalayan Monals, Kashmir Flycatcher, and colorful pheasants like the crimson tragopan, the iridescent monal pheasant, the blood pheasant, and the koklass pheasant. Besides, the golden eagle and the bearded vulture or lammergeyer can be seen flying higher in the sky. Apart, the park is extremely rich in Wild Cherry, Pear, Plum, Peach, Apple, Apricot, Walnut, Chestnut, Oak, Willow, Poplar, Chinar, Birch, Pine, and Elm. If you are a trekker, then this park has great potential for exploration on foot. Lower Dachigam has an elevation of 1700 m with a gentle ascent and is most suitable for the casual trekker. It covers one-third of the total park area with a thick canopy of Alpine trees. A 10 km long trek will bring you to middle Dachigam and usher you into a thicker, more diverse cover of rich flora. Upper Dachigam, with an elevation of 4300 m, is not for the faint of heart or the occasional trekker. But, for the seasoned trekking enthusiast, it offers an exhilarating experience. It takes at least a day to reach Upper Dachigam from the nearest road, and you need special permits for your trek here. Be prepared for an unforgiving and challenging terrain with harsh weather conditions as you gear up for the trek of a lifetime. Although the park is open throughout the year, the best time to visit lower Dachigam is from September to December and the upper Dachigam is from May to August. The main gate entrance is very close to the New Theed general bus stand on either side of Darul Uloom Kousaria. There are a few Forest Department accommodations available inside the park and reservations can be made from the office of Srinagar's Tourist Reception Centre through the Chief Wildlife Warden. Tourists have to get an entry pass from Wildlife Office near Dal Lake to visit Dachigam National Park. Since private vehicles are not allowed inside, one needs to hire a golf cart to traverse the park which is the only possible way apart from traveling by foot in this heavenly abode of nature. Timings: 10 AM - 5 PM Entry: Rs. 25 for Indians & Rs. 50 for Foreigners, Rs. 1200 for Golf Cart, Still Camera: Rs. 100 for Indians & Rs. 200 for Foreigners

Exploring a destination...

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!

History

The Dachigam National Park has a rich history associated to it, as the region was once the hunting ground of the famous Maharaja of Kashmir. Since the year 1910, the Park has been a highly protected zone. After the accession of Jammu Kashmir to the Union Government of India, government officials directly became the concerned authorities taking care of the operations and administration of the Park.

Way back in the year of 1951, the Park was awarded the status of a Wildlife Sanctuary. The region was officially declared as a National Park by the Government of India in 1981. The literal meaning of the term ‘Dachigam’ is ‘ten villages’. It was named in the memory of specific group of 10 villages that were relocated to construct the Park. With a rich and exotic biodiversity, the park attracts tourists from all over the world, and other parts of India.

The day temperatures during the summer months can reach to even 30 degree Celsius. It is advisable to not visit the Park during the monsoon months. Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience!

Dachigam National Park forest has high valleys, sloppy green meadows, alpine mountains and streams that join the riverine forest.

Only 22 km from Srinagar, Dachigam National Park is India's only coniferous forest — the last home to the Kashmiri stag.

The population of the Kashmiri stag or Hangul as they're called, the only surviving sub-species of the Elk in the world continues to decline.

Today, less than 200 of them survive in the shelters of the Dachigam National Park .

Conservation of the Kashmiri stag has become as important as India’s tigers and more so after IUCN’s (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List has classified it as the most critically endangered.

Being a wildlife lover this information was compelling enough to bring myself here for a new adventure.

I was thrilled to see an endangered species up in the mountains, plus the idea of a wildlife walking safari excited me and I had no idea of what was to come.

A forest bathing experience

Forest bathing, a simple act of being among trees, has been part of the national public health program for almost four decades in Japan. I felt I experienced something similar in India.

"It covers an area of 141 sq km enclosed by the Zabarwan range of Himalayas," our forest guide filled us in before moving into the forest.

During the era of Maharaja Hari Singh (1895-1961), Dachigam became the hunting ground of the king until it was declared a national park in 1951.

Over the years, the zealous efforts of conservation have pushed the meagre population of hanguls to 400.

At 3.30 pm, the forest light faded under the canopy of wood creepers and pine trees.

Before we could fathom the forests gargantuan landscape, the trail vanished into the woods.

We toiled up on steep undulated slopes after our guide Muzammil, who took quick easy steps cutting across thorny bushes.

I was the slowest in the group.

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 3/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

We walked through impenetrable sections of the forest and used our hands to ward off the thorny bushes and creepers.

I felt the forest getting denser at every ascent. This was not a usual wildlife safari like in other parks in India.

No particular trail to walk on, just following the instincts of the guide who has spent half of his life in these remote woods.

This is a walk in the woods in its purest form – with no safari jeeps or canters!

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 4/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

Spotting the magnificent Kashmiri stag

I was told to keep apace as the Hanguls might be out in the lower reaches of the mountains.

After a slightly uphill hike, we reached a meadow enclosed by wooded mountains.

I could only recognise deodar trees that stood in high density. Oaks, pines, chinar, poplar, birch, elm, and willow added to the alpine beauty of the forest.

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 5/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

There was a watchtower standing as a vantage point to survey the surrounding mountains and the undisturbed shelters of the Hanguls.

I thought the prospect of sighting one on a late afternoon was up in the air, knowing early morning sightings are most frequent.

It turns out that afternoon is grazing time for Hanguls. In the meadows the overcast sky glittered in the sun.

Through my DSL's viewfinder, I located mountain trails and scanty bushes, all possible grounds for sighting the animal.

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 6/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

We waited in silence, carrying the camera in hand when a long barking sound echoed down the valley.

In a flash, a dark brown coat with big antlers looked at us and then vanished out of sight.

We stood alert, and Muzammil (our guide) said, pointing his hand towards the hill, "see that's the alpha male calling for the female".

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 7/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

Muzammil was absolutely right. The male came out several times. I got to look at his game and stood mesmerised looking at his spread-out antlers, 'a-crown-in-brown' if I may.

A collared female made her appearance. However much I tried getting her shot, the forest made me aware that this area was starkly different from the other national parks, and one cannot fathom the distance between two points.

On mountainous terrain, the animal could be only 800 metres away and yet uncapturable owing to the elevation. Long story short, one needs a 600 mm lens to cover the spectacle with clarity.

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 9/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

We left the watch tower to another wooded trail with a purposeful briskness. This time it was towards the Dachigam River, formed by glacier waters that gush down the mountains.

Before reaching the riverside, we passed through a wooded trail, carpeted by dried fallen leaves and packed with rows of tall trees on both sides — walnuts, thorny berry bushes and parrotia, an alpine tree with bare, serpentine branches.

From a distance, the tree seems like an artwork made of branches.

As we walked on, the light dimmed and silence ruled.

We could hear each crunch of leaves, crack of wood we stepped on and the gushing sounds of the river in the distance.

At one point I felt the overpowering smell of leaves and branches and breathed chlorophyll-filled air.

Many trees and plants give off a type of natural essential oil called phytoncide – a secretion when inhaled has positive effects on the immune system.

This was forest bathing at its finest.

Close encounters with wild denizens

Hiking in Dashigam reminded me of Bill Bryson's A Walk in Woods where he trekked through Appalachian Trail and said, "distance changes utterly when you take the world on foot.

A mile becomes a long way... the world you realise is enormous in a way that only you and your fellow hikers know".

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 11/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

At one point I couldn't see anything through the deep foliage on either side of the path.

Never had I walked with so much alertness.

We headed through a heap of dry leaves and broken branches when we heard an unfamiliar noise of breaking branches followed by snuffling.

I saw something sizeable ahead but wan't sure what it was. Our guide gave us a stick to hold on to.

He whispered that there is a bear near the walnut tree. I stood tiptoe, peering into the leafy stooping branch.

A Himalayan bear appeared ahead and I could see him coming toward us.

Quietly I went behind the Chinar tree, my heart beating very fast.

I remembered what Muzammil said earlier, "this is a territory of Himalayan bears and snow leopards and we are trudging into their paths, completely alone, unarmed".

Photo of Forget Japan, Go to Kashmir’s Dachigam National Park for an Insane Forest Bathing Experience! 12/13 by Satarupa Mitra Datta

Another bear appeared on the same path, two of them snacking on fallen walnuts and berries.

I thought what if they change their mind in search of a bigger meal? Muzammil took my camera and walked unnoticed behind them.

I was left behind for a good 15 minutes inside the forest with no knowledge of how to fight a wild animal.

Muzammil came back and while we spoke to each other in whispers, the bears saw us and ran away at a thundering speed, bouncing wildly. Both vanished in a jiffy.

I took a long moment to catch my breath and wiped a river of sweat from my brow.

You could wait for hours, days, weeks even, for that one single golden moment of spotting a rare animal that could last just seconds. I got many such moments on the entire walking safari in the deep woods of Dachigam that I shall not forget soon! Mostly importantly, this walk in the forest taught me that travelling is also a test of our wits, our nerve and our endurance. It takes us far beyond our comfort zone.

How to plan a trip to Dachigam

Unlike other national parks, Dachigam doesn't aim to profile the national park. The department of wildlife protection, central division, Srinagar manages the park. During, the mating season i.e. October, the park is closed for some weeks to ensure an undisturbed environment for the hanguls. It is open all year round save this period.

Rah Bagh , 17 km from Srinagar and in the fringes of Dachigam, organizes these wildlife safaris with prior permission. Apple orchards, views of Dal Lake, impeccable hospitality and wooden chalets with Zabarwan mountains in the backdrop make Ragh Bagh an idyllic retreat in Kashmir Valley.

Dachigam National Park, A Natural Jewel In Kashmir

Help us spread the news. please share our lifesaving work on your social media..

Not many know that one-third of the world’s mammalian species that can be called true mountain animals are found in the Himalayan ranges. Given that the Himalayas is one of the four biodiversity hotspots found in India , it comes as no surprise that there lies such heterogeneity in these lands. Kashmir can easily be called the crown of the Himalayas for its astounding natural beauty.

Illuminating this crown is the Dachigam National Park. It is an irony that the park was established in 1910 as a hunting reserve by the Maharaja of Kashmir. The name of the park comes from the Kashmiri words dah which means 10, whereas chi denotes ‘are’, and gam refers to village, roughly translating to ‘ten villages’. Before the existence of the park, the area was occupied by 10 villages which were later translocated from the area due to the formation of the hunting reserve. The name of the national park was eventually monikered to commemorate these 10 villages.

Situated about 20 km from the main city of Srinagar, the Dachigam National Park now holds rich faunal and floristic diversity, and is bedecked with precious trees such as wild cherry, apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, chestnut, willow, walnut, oak, pine, birch, poplar, chinar and elm! Dachigam predominantly has steep mountainous terrain, and is one of the most significantly protected areas of Kashmir.

dachigam national park safari

Measuring over 140 sq km in the Zabarwan mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Dachigam holds the last viable population of the vulnerable hangul (Kashmir stag) in the world, and has one of the largest populations of the Asiatic black bear. Some other mammals that call Dachigam home include the Himalayan Brown bear , Indian leopard, Himalayan grey langur, yellow-throated marten, Himalayan wolf, Himalayan weasel and Himalayan mouse hare to name a few. The varied avifauna also makes it a birdwatcher’s delight with a plethora of birds found here.

Dachigam is the residence of raptors such as the Eurasian eagle owl, Lammergeier, Eurasian griffon and white-rumped vulture. Avian species like the Himalayan woodpecker, Himalayan swiftlet, alpine swift, Himalayan monal, western tragopan, European roller, Eurasian cuckoo, slaty-headed parakeet and Tickell’s leaf warbler are among the many that can be spotted.

Dachigam is invaluable for another significant reason. The ecosystem service this national park provides is unparalleled, as it occupies almost half the catchment area of the famous Dal Lake and acts as the major water source for Srinagar. Dachigam is a remarkable case of how it preserves ecological processes for the evolution of various ecosystems comprising several plant and animal species.

dachigam national park safari

Wildlife SOS has the fortune to work with both the flagship species of Dachigam, namely the hangul and the Asiatic black bear . The hangul or Kashmir stag is a subspecies of the Central Asian red deer. Being endemic to the Valley, the hangul is the state animal of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), and the deer is so elusive that it escapes the sight of even the most ardent wildlife spotters.

The hangul is accorded the highest protection by law under Schedule I of India’s Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Wildlife SOS is actively engaged in conducting the population census of the Kashmir stag . This occurs every two years, wherein Wildlife SOS partners with the Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Protection Department and student volunteers from Kashmir University to implement the census. The students are taught how to assess faecal samples and identify the species’ prints on the soil to track them.

Wildlife SOS also works passionately toward the protection and conservation of Asiatic black bears in the landscape through human-bear conflict mitigation. Wildlife SOS has a rescue facility present inside the national park named the Dachigam Bear Rescue Centre that houses one male and three female Asiatic black bears, and one male Himalayan Brown bear. All these bears were rescued from situations of human-wildlife conflict and those related to anthropogenic factors.

dachigam national park safari

Wildlife SOS covers the pivotal aspect of carrying out rescues through a 24×7 Rapid Response Unit as well. Led by Ms. Aaliya Mir, the lead rescuer and head of the J&K programme, the team operates out of Srinagar and has carried out several reptile rescues in the past . The maximum number of calls received by our emergency helpline near the Dachigam area are related to the sighting of snakes such as the Levantine viper and the Himalayan trinket.

Last year, a six-foot-long Himalayan trinket snake got caught in the crossfire of conflict in the Zabarwan Forest Range area, after being spotted by the locals. An irrational fear of reptiles prompted them to try and chase the snake away using what appeared to be a stick or a sharp object, which injured the reptile on its neck. The Wildlife SOS Rapid Response Unit rescued the snake, provided topical medication to treat its injuries and safely released it back into the wild.

By working on multifarious projects that are related to wildlife census, rehabilitation, rescue and conflict mitigation, Wildlife SOS is clearly pushing the boundaries to conserve the sanctity of Dachigam National Park. If you love nature, visit to a national park should be a must in your bucket list.

Dachigam National Park

Here we are going to discover about an extremely beautiful national park called TheDachigam National Park, located in the land of tourism ‘Jammu and Kashmir’.

The national park in located 22 kilometres from Srinagar.Itsaltitude varies between 5,500 to 14,000 ft. Located in the Zabarwan range of Western Himalayas, the landscape is no only featured with the beautiful sloping grassland but there are also areas with sharp and rocky outcrops and cliffs. The park lies in two different zones, the Upper and the Lower Dachigam. Both these regions vary from each other in terms of climatic conditions, terrain, flora and fauna. The lower Dachigam is more accessiblethan the upper Dachigam.

In 1910, the then Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir wanted to create a land for game preserve and catchment for Harwan reserves. In this process, ten villages were relocated out of the forest. This is how Dachigamderives its name, the word Dachigam means ‘ten-villages’. Under the king’s order, several wildlife enhancement measures were taken. Projects were conducted to increase the winter fodder for the wild animals. Later the land came under the protection of the government. The reserve was declared as a National Park in the year 1981.

Things to See

The national park is home to some of the rarest species of animals and birds. The most popular is the critically endangered Hangul or Kashmir Stag. Further, animals such as the Himalayan black bear, ibex goat and markhor can be seen in the lower regions during winters. The upper region is well known for its snow leopard. Other commonly spotted animals are white-bellied musk deer, yellow- throated Marten, long-tailed marmot, jungle-cat and many more. You can only spot a few if you are lucky.

Dachigam is also a paradise for over 150 species of birds. Monal pleasant, koklass pheasant, bearded vulture and crimson tragopanare some important and frequently spotted birds in Dachigam.

Best time to visit

It is advised to visit Dachigam between May and November. The climate during this period is quite pleasant and the fauna activity is at its highest. You should avoid visiting the park during the winter months because the winter wind, snow and severely low temperature makes the area inaccessible.

The month of November is consider is the best time to enjoy it’s beauty. March to May is ideal for bird watching. If you are fortunate enough to spot the animals at early mornings and late afternoons you can see the animals in their best form because they are most active during this time.
