With his depiction of the Eiffel Tower , the symbol of Paris built in 1889 as a spectacular example of French engineering, Robert Delaunay produced a shocking scenario of the decline and fall of the modern world. His admiration for industrial progress contrasts with his pictorial destruction of the architectural construction, to the point of a formal dissolution of the motif. Its only remaining relation to the city is the view of the curved paths on the Champ de Mars . The tower itself, exploded into schematic pieces, traverses the painting diagonally, its tip covered by prism-like clouds. Delaunay dedicated this painting, part of a series of about 15 of the Eiffel Tower, to his friend, the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who wrote ardent poems and texts on the artist's work and on the modern metropolis of Paris.

L'artiste Robert Delaunay est un peintre français né le 12 avril 1885 à Paris et mort le 25 octobre 1941 à Montpellier. Il est le fondateur du mouvement orphiste, branche du cubisme et important mouvement du début du XXᵉ siècle. Il travaille avec sa femme, et tout deux forment un couple d'artistes influant. Sonia Delaunay, réussit à traduire visuellement ce qui est immatériel : la musique et sa vibration. Le rythme de la peinture devient celui de la musique.

Orphisme, branche du Cubisme En 1912, lors de l’exposition de la Section d'Or, Apollinaire distingue le cubisme scientifique du cubisme orphique. Le mouvement tient son nom du poème de ce dernier ''Orphée''. C'est l'art de figurer avec des éléments, non de la réalité, mais inventés par l'artiste. Ils sont alors pour l'artiste, doués de réalité. La couleur devient sujet et le tableau abstraction.

Bleu : Associé à l'apaisement et à la stabilité, le bleu fait aussi référence à la confiance, à la loyauté ou à la vérité. Il est aussi lié au bien-être et à la spiritualité. Il est souvent associé par exemple à la sérénité, à la sagesse et au rêve.

Rouge : La symbolique du rouge est toujours associée au feu, bien qu'il ne soit pas réellement rouge. Le rouge est également la couleur du bonheur, par exemple en Chine.

Vert : Nous pensons immédiatement à tout ce qui est naturel et vivant avec le vert. Créé par l’association d’une couleur chaude et d’une couleur froide, le vert est l’équilibre parfait.

Jaune : Le jaune est ambivalent. Peu apprécié, il est pourtant d'abord associé à ce qui brille et donc, à l’optimisme. Mais plus que toutes les autres, c’est une couleur instable : une touche d’une autre couleur suffit à la brouiller.

Orange : Notre cerveau tend à effacer cette couleur. Entre le jaune et le rouge, nous avons du mal à la nuancer. Elle a une forte valeur positive, voire optimiste. C'est une couleur vivante qui inspire la bonne humeur, le dynamisme et la chaleur.

Noir : Le noir a de multiples significations, elles peuvent être positives, et incarner la simplicité, l'élégance et la sobriété, ou être négatives, alors associé à la tristesse, la mort, le deuil, la solitude et l'obscurité.

Gris : Au Moyen-Âge, en Occident, le gris symbolisait la sagesse et la connaissance, puis au fil du temps, l'ennui, la dépression et la tristesse.

Vertigineuse tour Eiffel de Robert Delaunay

Description

Après avoir travaillé sur la France, et Paris, sa capitale, j'ai choisi de m'appuyer sur les oeuvres très colorées de Robert Delaunay pour réaliser des productions en arts visuels. Les élèves ont été impressionnés par la variété et le nombre des tableaux inspirés au peintre par cette célèbre tour !

J'ai présenté et lu le superbe album de la collection l'élan vert. On y appréciera des illustrations très colorées et exécutées dans l'esprit "Delaunien". Y sont mis en scène des protagonistes (chat et poisson) farfelus, face à un maître complètement fasciné par la tour Eiffel. Ce personnage, Angus de Lafourtel (anagramme à souligner au passage !) ne manquera pas d'être comparé à Robert Delaunay.

Fiche biographique pour le cahier d'art

J'ai réalisé un petit diaporama à passer aux élèves, ainsi qu'un petit trousseau de cartes plastifiées avec les mêmes oeuvres.

L'idée est de réaliser une production dérivée des cercles colorés de Robert Delaunay, et de ses dessins montrant la tour sous une forme déstructurée. Tout d'abord, il faut créer une image ayant subi une distorsion. Voici des exemples trouvés sur pinterest :

Après avoir sélectionné une photographie de la tour, je l'ai beaucoup agrandie et photocopiée afin de réaliser un montage.

J'ai l'ancienne version de EK Tools, simple et efficace dans son utilisation. J'apprécie la numérotation de 6 emplacements permettant de réaliser des cercles parfaitement espacés sans avoir à chercher : la numérotation permet un placement de la lame immédiat ! Toujours commencer par le n°1 et finir par le n°6 surtout !

Bien sûr, il faut préparer les supports des élèves à l'avance ...

Une fois ce support prêt, il faut mettre en couleur les cercles, et en faire tracer sur le pourtour de l'image. Le medium doit être riche en pigments, on pourra utiliser des feutres, des craies grasses ou plastiques, des encres ... ce sera selon les possibilités de chacun. L'exemple présenté ici, a été mis en couleurs avec des pastels à l'huile et des crayons de couleurs. C'est moi qui l'ai réalisé, l'atelier en classe n'étant pas terminé.

Pour l'image du cadre, le fait de tracer des cercles concentriques accentue la ressemblance avec les tableaux de Robert Delaunay. Des couvercles et bouchons, ou des gabarits de tous diamètres, permettront aux élèves les plus jeunes de pouvoir le faire facilement. L'observation initiale des tableaux sera alors mise à profit pour l'agencement, le choix des couleurs, et la gestion du rythme visuel.

Dès que les élèves auront fini, j'exposerai quelques photos des réalisations.

"Eiffel Tower" by Robert Delaunay (1928)

Robert Delaunay created the large-scale painting Eiffel Tower, the last in a series, in Paris in 1928. Colourfully depicting the Eiffel Tower in Paris from a bird’s eye view, it was inspired by photographs taken from aeroplanes. The Eiffel Tower virtually becomes a rocket, seeming to take off from the earth. An advanced state of ageing, numerous revisions, soiling and old restorations, as well as a now cloudy finish, prompted the conservation and restoration of the painting for its prominent inclusion in the Neue Nationalgalerie’s inaugural reopening exhibition .

The painting exhibited an overall diffuse and noticeably uneven visual effect because of surface soiling and the partially milky (i.e. blanched) and irregularly applied finish coat that covered the colourful work like a grey smear. There were numerous areas with loosened layers of paint across the work’s entire surface.

The restoration objective was to secure all areas of the paint layer threatened by separation and to give the painting a cohesive and visually aesthetic overall impression.

The measures were accompanied by extensive art-technological examinations such as macro and microscopic inspections under visible light as well as UV excitation, sampling and analyses.

The deterioration of the finish or varnish known as blanching appears opaque white and can, in some cases, be regenerated with the help of solvents. Such interventions must be carefully considered to achieve the desired effect and avoid any damage to the original substance. In Delaunay’s Eiffel Tower , the original appearance was severely distorted by soiling and blanching. Thanks to the measures carried out by the restorer, the painting has regained its readability.

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Krasnodar

Here we are in the South of Russia. Welcome to Krasnodar, a major economic and cultural center of North Caucasus, also called “the capital of Kuban”. Krasnodar, perhaps, is one of the most interesting resort towns of the Russian Federation. It is a relatively young city founded by the Cossacks in в 1793 on the lands granted by Ekaterina II (hence its former name was Ekaterinodar). Later, when the Soviet system rose to power, the city was re-named to Krasnodar in 1920, and it preserved this name up to date.

Krasnodar is a center of the Russia’s southern touristic zone, located of the right bank of the Kuban River, 120-150 km from two warm seas – the Black and the Azov. It is an interesting fact that the city is located in the golden section of the Earth, almost in between the equator and the North Pole, right on the 45th parallel, also called “the Golden Line” or “the Life Line”. There exists an opinion that the living conditions in these latitudes are most favorable for human.

In spite of the city’s “youth” Krasnodar has many historical landmarks, while its architectural look is various and represented by different styles from Baroque and Classicism to late Modern. In Krasnodar, there is one of the largest Russian churches – Saint Catherine’s Cathedral, built as early as in 1914 and survived by a miracle under the Soviet power. It is also worth while visiting the Krasnodar main Orthodox Church – Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Interesting and dramatic, was the fate of this, one of the Russia’s most beautiful churches, an example of Russian and Byzantine templar style. Alexander Nevsky Military Cathedral was erected in April 1853, but later on, in year 1932 it was blown up by the Communists. And it was not until May 2006 when the inauguration ceremony of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral built anew took place.

Nowadays the Krasnodar architectural variety combines the harmony of old and modern structures. Now, next to the churches there are also modern high-rise buildings (the Marriott Hotel”), shopping and entertainment centers (“Red Square”), modern concert halls (Palace of Arts “Premiere”), restaurants, and night clubs. The city also strikes with its numerous museums, theaters, art galleries. Particularly, if you find yourself in Krasnodar, we recommend you to visit the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum named after F. A. Kovalenko to enjoy a rare collection of Russian avant-garde and Dutch art of XVI century, and also attend concerts of SSAI “Kuban Cossack chorus” to listen to Kuban Cossack, Russian and Ukrainian folk-songs.

Two Krasnodar unusual landmarks enjoy wide popularity among tourists and local community: the Monument to a purse and the Monument to the doggies in love. Do you want to turn round? Then you are to the purse. It is enough to rub your purse over it, and you will have more money. But if you are unlucky in love, then the loving couple of dogs will help you, you should stroke their small paws and love will certainly come to you.

5 modern wineries in Russia’s South that are worth visiting

1. Abrau-Dyurso: Russia ’s best sparkling wine

In November 1870, Alexander II ordered to build a winery near Lake Abrau.

This winery on the shores of Lake Abrau was founded during the time of Tsar Alexander II. Since then, it has survived German occupation and a factory explosion. Today, it’s the largest center in Russia for wine-making and tourism.

The winery in the foothills of the Navagir Mountains, not far from the Black Sea, released its first shipment of sparkling wine in 1898. Afterwards, the assortment only broadened, including still wines, alcohol-free and strong alcohol beverages.

Aside from learning about the factory’s history, the process of wine-making and its wine-tasting, Abrau-Dyurso offers unusual tours. During one of them, visitors learn about the secrets of Abrau-Dyurso. The tour program has walks along the winery’s dim underground tunnels, a meeting with local ghosts, the trial of a “drunken staircase” and tells about the legend of an unhappy Circassian young woman whose tears remain as a stream over a rock. 

Among Abrau-Dyurso’s vineyards, which cover 3,300 hectares, there are two observation decks offering a view of the grapevines and the Black Sea, as well as the emerald-green Lake Abrau. People come here to enjoy the romantic and astonishing sunsets, with a glass of sparkling wine in hand. 

Abrau-Dyurso is also a resort with a sailing club, a beach, hotels and campsites. There’s a campsite for travelers with tents, an eco-campsite with cabins in the woods, as well as a car campsite at Round Lake for tourists who journey with trailers.

2. Southern Wine Company: a wine bath

Wine-tasting in the vineyards of the Southern Wine Company.

On the southern shore of the Taman Peninsula, between two estuaries – Kisiltashskiy and Tsokur – unfolds the vineyards of the Southern Wine Company, which is a part of the Ochakovo company.

Its vineyards occupy about 1,500 hectares and they grow classic European grape varieties, as well as indigenous varieties – Tsimlyansk black; Saperavi northern; and Citron Magaracha.

Tourists come here for the winery and vineyard tours, as well as for wine tasting in a pavilion with a view of the estuaries’ expanse. During the harvest season you can crush grapes by foot in a wooden tub or take a wine bath. A hydro-massage tub is filled with water mixed with wine, berry and grape leaf extracts, aromatic oil and flowers. All that’s left for you to do is to enjoy the wine with every cell of your body.

3. Skalisty Bereg: wine and stars

The modern winery Skalisty Bereg (Rocky Coast) perfectly suits the local landscape – its shape resembles a light-gray pebble. In the lower part of the winery, sitting on the cliffs of the Semisamsky Mountains, there are workshops; the upper part hosts a tasting hall and a wine shop. A panoramic terrace offers a view of the vineyards and the sea shore. 

The first vineyards were planted in 2011. Vines of three white varieties were planted: Riesling; Sauvignon blanc; and Chardonnay, along with five red varieties: Pinot noir; Merlot; Cabernet Sauvignon; Cabernet Franc; and Krasnostop.

The vineyards are situated on a rocky coast – at a height of 150 to 250 meters above sea level. They neighbor old conifer and juniper-pistachio forests. It’s worth taking the winery’s “Wine and Stars” tour – this can serve both as a romantic date and a scientific lecture. In good weather, when the clouds don’t drape the sky, you can look into a modern telescope on the winery’s observation deck and see the Moon’s craters, as well as galactic nebulae and the star clusters of the northern hemisphere.

4. The Sikory Estate: a dinner with wine

Some of the best Riesling wines are produced at the family winery of Alexander Sikorsky in Semigorye Valley. The vineyards occupy 47 hectares, growing varieties like Bordeaux blend, Burgundy varieties, Riesling and Krasnostop. 

During a tour around the Sikory Estate guests will have a walk among picturesque vineyards, a deep dive into the secrets of wine making and a tasting of local wines. In the wine cellar for wine aging, you should pay attention to the concrete spheres that are unique in Russia. Due to their shape and the effect of the external temperature, these spheres help the wine proceed through the sediment mixing in a natural way.

While at the winery, you should also enjoy an enogastronomic dinner in the grill house and spend the evening meandering among the vineyards. During the dinner, the chef’s dishes are accompanied by perfectly matched wines.

5. Myskhako: a modern winery with history

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Cabernet Myskhako was considered one of the best red wines of the Russian Empire. The first vine was planted here in 1869. During Soviet times, the winery was the favorite holiday spot of the Communist Party elite, and at the beginning of the 2000s the winery was an official supplier to the Kremlin.

However, in 2013 the company faced financial problems. It gained a new lease on life only in 2021 when it was thoroughly modernized. In 2022, 14 hectares of new vineyards were planted – with the Chardonnay and Marselan varieties. In total, Myskhako has 227 hectares of vineyards.

Apart from a tour of the vineyards and the wine production facilities, guests are invited to visit the historic wine tasting hall, which was opened in 1973 for Leonid Brezhnev’s arrival in nearby Novorossiysk.

For a long time, only government delegations and celebrities were welcomed here. Today, not only a politician or an actor can enjoy wine tasting in this hall, but rather, anyone who has the desire to do so.
