No Disney World Secret comes with as much mystery and allure as the Disney World utilidors located in—or rather under—the entire Magic Kingdom park. Besides being a great source of mystery and rumors, the utilidors serve many functional purposes that help the park run smoothly while maintaining the magic.

Is There a Secret Disney World Underground?

Underground at Disney World are the vast tunnels and mazes of the Disney utilidors. The utilidors were constructed after Walt saw a Disneyland Frontierland Cowboy moving through Tomorrowland during his route to work. Walt was all about maintaining the illusion and magic, and an old timey cowboy in the future ruined that illusion.

When Walt was planning Magic Kingdom in Florida, he came up with an idea to maintain the illusion of each themed land while helping staff and materials make their way around the park. The utilidors were constructed in a large circle underneath every land located within the park, with a section going through the middle and directly underneath the castle.

utilidors

Contrary to popular belief though, the famous Disney World underground tunnels are not even underground. The Disney World utilidors are at ground level, while the rest of the park is at the first or second story level.

The local water table is too high for anything to be built underground in the park. To combat this, and still have the necessary Disney tunnels, dirt from the lake/ lagoon excavation was built up to build the entire Magic Kingdom Park.

When you disembark from the buses or boats, you will find yourself walking up a slight incline to the entrance. The entrance is the second story of Magic Kingdom. As you make your way down Main Street, towards Cinderella’s Castle, you are very slowly making your way from the second story to the third. The castle is raised up to make it appear even larger from the entrance.

What Happens in the Disney Utilidors?

extended hours early entry fantasyland

The Disney World utilidors operate as a mini city and facilitate every hidden service that needs to take place for the Magic Kingdom to run. The biggest function of the utilidors is to serve employee needs, well out of sight of guests.

Down in the 9 acres of Disney World utilidors, an elevator brings materials and cast members from the ground level to the castle. The main Disney World utilidor entrance is located behind Fantasyland, where all cast members begin their shift. Buses transport cast members from the employee parking lot to the utilidors and back. The other entrances to the utilidors (which will be explained below,) are mainly accessed by stairwells hidden throughout the park.

Inside the Disney tunnels are employee services and accommodations such as a cafeteria, lockers, break rooms, restrooms, and a rumored Subway restaurant. Disney even brings in shopping vendors to entertain the employees. Holiday parties, complete with DJs also happen right underneath guests’ feet.

Additionally, there are rooms for makeup, costumes, and warm-up and practice rooms for performers. Cast members often walk through the Disney World Utilidors with costumes in large black, rolling suitcases to the prep rooms.

Cast members who perform, or portray characters are responsible for checking out their costumes for the day and readying themselves for each role. For example, anyone performing as Cinderella is responsible for knowing and applying their own makeup and wigs. All face characters must wear wigs, even if their hair is already the correct color. This ensures that the character looks the same no matter who is playing the role.

All costumes must be returned prior to the end of the cast member’s shift to ensure costume integrity. All cast members must also go through rigorous training to portray different characters, and much of this happens right inside the utilidors.

Aside from employee uses, the Disney World utilidors serve as something of an underground warehouse. All deliveries for the Magic Kingdom take place in these Disney World underground tunnels. Throughout the tunnels, small electric vehicles zip around, full of supplies and materials that are needed throughout the park. No gas fired vehicles are allowed inside the tunnels to help keep the air quality high.

With the number of guests that the Magic Kingdom brings in, you can probably imagine how much trash goes out. Managing trash inside such a large park can be a chore. But the Disney World utilidors make it much easier. Lining the walls off the tunnels are large pipes which act as a vacuum to carry trash bags through the park and to the trash compactor.

The last, and possibly most crucial thing that happens inside the Disney World utilidors, is the DACS, or engineering room. The Digital Animation Control System, (DACS) controls and coordinates all the audio and timing for the audio animatronics inside the entire park. Inside the engineering room are also controls for the lighting, music, and parades.

Why are the Disney Utilidors So Secret?

Disney always has been and always will be about the show of things. The biggest part of the Disney experience is the theming and the illusion. Without those pieces, it becomes just a regular amusement park, rather than an experience.

To extend the magic, Disney World theming requires costumes for every employee. Rather than one basic Disney uniform, however, employees are dressed based on their location inside the parks.

Every land inside the park has a different theme, and different employee uniforms. In fact, many shops and rides even have their own uniforms to help with the illusion. The utilidors help to preserve this magic by providing a way for cast members to move between lands without being seen by guests. Imagine a Haunted Mansion employee making their way past Cinderella’s Carouse. That would be a little too spooky!

In addition to that, the utilidors provide a place for character actors to get ready for their performances. Imagine how jarring it would be to see Winnie the Pooh with his head missing, especially for little ones.

The utilidors are kept secret to keep the illusion a secret. They are also kept a secret to give employees privacy when they relax and come out of character.

Is there a Disney World Utilidors Tour?

The answer is, yes! The Disney World Keys to the Kingdom Tour starts outside of the utilidors and gives glimpses into many secrets and backstage areas before descending into the Disney World tunnels. The tour covers Disney history, details about the park and Walt, as well as little known facts about popular rides for the first half.

An exterior view of Cinderella's Castle, just one of the reasons guests consider the Magic Kingdom the best Disney park

Once the Disney World utilidor tour enters the backstage area, no cameras are allowed, period. First you explore the backstage area above ground behind Splash Mountain. Here, the trash compactor is located as well as the parade float storage. After, you will head through a door in a Fantasyland shop to one of the Disney World Utilidor entrances and descend a stairway to the tunnels.

Inside the tunnels, your guide will walk you past many of the rooms, such as the engineering room, the costume room, and more while explaining what cast members do inside the utilidors. We also got to see the main entrance from the inside, the trash tubes, and where the elevator to Cinderella’s Castle is.

Where do the Disney World Utilidors Go?

The utilidors technically begin behind Fantasyland in the backstage area. Here, employees access the tunnels, and deliveries take place. From here, the tunnels create a circle, going underneath Liberty Square, then Frontierland, Adventureland, and to Main Street USA.

A single branch also travels underneath the entrance on Main St USA. The tunnels then go either in a straight line, down Main Street and under the castle, back to the main entrance, or continue in a circle underneath Tomorrowland and back.

Color coded lines on the walls of the Disney World utilidors guide cast members so they always know where they are. Each land has at least one entrance into the utilidors.

How can you schedule a tour of the utilidors tunnels ?

You can schedule a tour of the Utilidor tunnels by booking the Keys to the Kingdom Tour, either online at Disney World’s website. Look under “things to do” and then “events and tours.” Another alternative is to work with a travel agent when booking your trip. They can handle most of your arrangements, including booking tours.

Theme parks, the utilidors: inside the magic kingdom’s secret underground city, one of few true urban legends about walt disney world.

Stacy Greenhut , Social Media Producer

Ken Pilcher , Producer

BAY LAKE, Fla. – There are all kinds of urban myths and legends about Walt Disney World. Most are flat out fables: No, Cinderella Castle’s turrets and towers don’t come apart for storage in a hurricane. No, Walt Disney’s head is not frozen underneath (Walt was cremated). One is absolutely true: There really is an underground city below the Magic Kingdom. So what really goes on inside this 9-acre circular network of subterranean tunnels called the Utilidors?

To sum their role up simply, the tunnels provide “an urban basement providing out-of-sight access to infrastructural services,” according to Disney author and historian Jeff Kurtti.

And they were a part of the plan from the very beginning -- a bold plan that added enormously to the cost and complexity of bringing the first phase of The Florida Project, but one born out of a desire to learn from and top what was built in Anaheim and Disneyland.

“(Walt) loved the fact that we were going to have a basement because the one thing he didn’t like about Disneyland is that the cast members had to go through different areas out of costume. This way they could be underground and come out into their land,” Dick Nunis, former chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts said.

But they aren’t really a basement. Anyone who’s tried to build in Florida knows -- or will quickly learn -- the water table is too high in our state to go down very deep, at least without a lot of extra work and money. To make Disney’s underground world, more than 7 million cubic yards of the earth dug up to create Seven Seas Lagoon was dumped and flattened.

All of that dirt was used to build up the heart of The Magic Kingdom’s fiefdom. In reality, the “basement” is the ground floor, putting much of the Magic Kingdom on the second floor at an average of 14 feet above normal ground level. One boundary is near the entrance to “It’s a Small World .” Guests take ramps down to reach the ride because its boats sail at actual ground level.

Not only do the Utilidors house the sewer lines, pipes, cables and other utilities you’d expect to find below ground, there are also storage areas, offices, breakrooms, make-up and dressing rooms, a cafeteria, a barbershop, a “zoo” to keep the Disney characters comfortable when they aren’t onstage, along with out-of-sight passages leading to 29 access points.

Walls are color-coded so employees can pop up close to their job site. Most of those access points feature signs reminding the “cast” to smile, because they are about to be onstage. Many those entrances and exits are cleverly hidden in plain sight.

EPCOT - the future city was still top of mind when phase one of the World was mapped out, a unique feature of the Utilidors is the Swedish AVAC trash-disposal system, which funnels trash underground in pneumatic tubes to a central collection point.

“Think about all the locations through the Magic Kingdom wherever the trash is at you go to a major receptacle, you pour it down, and it travels through these pneumatic tubes to one collection point. No need for trucks to come anywhere close to the guest. And the sights, the smells, everything is whisked away. It works as well today as it did, you know almost 50 years ago,” Phil Holmes, former vice president of Magic Kingdom from 2001 to 2015, said.

It might be the fastest trash disposal system on Earth. According to Aaron H. Goldberg, author of “Buying Disney’s World,” once the trash is deposited it is whisked away in tubes at almost 60 mph. Then it’s compacted and trucked to an incinerator.

The Utilidors provide important space for many critical functions, including the control of animatronic figures inside attractions throughout the park above. Kurtti wrote, “The Digital Animation Control System (DACS), ensures that the hundreds of Audio- Animatronics figures in the Magic Kingdom are ‘on cue’ during their performances, by orchestrating more than 2,000 individual functions every second.”

DACS also plays a role in opening automatic theater doors, elevating stage lifts, operating lighting and curtains and monitoring fire protection, security, equipment failure and power loss, although as the Kingdom has built out and technology has advanced over 50 years, not everything is as centralized as it was in 1971. With modern computers using tiny storage chips instead of enormous reel-to-reel tapes even some legacy attractions like “The Enchanted Tiki Room” are mostly controlled from its own show building.

Disney employees, tens of thousands of cast members, and characters at Magic Kingdom keep the magic alive, which means a lot of costumes. According to Disney, for many years the largest active wardrobe department in the world called the Utilidors home, housing more than 2 million pieces of apparel and accessories to outfit the man cast members and Audio-Animatronic performers within Magic Kingdom. In 2005, much of that wardrobe was relocated to a larger location in the cast members’ parking lot, making it easier and faster for them to check out and take home costumes.

Chances are strong you’ve never seen a service vehicle or delivery truck outside a shop or restaurant at the Magic Kingdom. Once again, that’s thanks to the Utilidors.

Deliveries and maintenance are mostly done through below-ground access, keeping the streets clear for pedestrians and the “peace and dreamlike quality of the park undisturbed,” Disney said. Even the bank trucks can drive right up to the “underground” entrances to collect the money. You can thank Walt for that.

Many guests ask to go down inside the tunnels. That is forbidden, except for a couple of tours that have been on hold due to the pandemic. So the next time you stroll through Main Street, think about what might be taking place throughout the mile of crisscrossing corridors that lie beneath your feet.

The best $120 I've spent at Disney this year got me into Magic Kingdom's secret tunnels

Tarah Chieffi

What would you say if I told you I paid $120 (on top of my park ticket) to walk around Disney World for five hours and only got on two rides? You'd probably think I'd have been better off spending that money on 15 Dole Whips or creating a realistic lightsaber at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge .

But what if I also told you that during those five hours I had some of the most fun I've had at Disney all year, learned enough park history to fill a book, got to see how the magic is made, and visited backstage areas where guests are not typically allowed -- including the secret underground tunnels where Disney cast members, characters, supplies — and, yes, even garbage — move around under the park unseen.

And those two rides I rode? I was ushered straight to the front of the line.

I was able to do all of this (and more) on Disney's Keys to the Kingdom Tour . Although I am now the keeper of many Disney secrets, I am not going to divulge all of them to you here. What fun would that be? I am, however, going to share a bit about my experience so that you can decide if it's something you'd like to add to the itinerary for your next Disney World vacation .

Keys to the Kingdom: Tour essentials

If you have ever seen a cast member clad in a dapper plaid outfit leading a small group of guests around the Magic Kingdom, you may have spotted a Keys to the Kingdom Tour. (These are not to be confused with the private VIP tours that cost thousands of dollars .)

Disney's Keys to the Kingdom Tour is held each morning at the Magic Kingdom, with four staggered start times between 8 a.m. and 9:30 am. The tour is priced at $114 per person plus tax ($121.41 total) and each tour holds about 20 guests.

Because of the small group size, advance reservations are strongly recommended, but they will take walkups based on availability. You can book the tour directly on Disney's website .

The tour is fully accessible if you have a scooter or wheelchair, and ASL interpreters are available. Tours are only given in English, but non-English speaking groups will sometimes bring their own interpreter to work alongside the tour guide.

Keep in mind that theme park admission and a Magic Kingdom Park Pass reservation are also required.

It's also worth noting that guests must be 16 years or older (with valid identification) to participate. Although I found the tour to be fascinating, my 3-, 5- and 9-year-old sons may have had something else to say about standing in the heat for five hours talking about forced perspective and how deep the water is on the Jungle Cruise, so these age guidelines are probably for the best.

Making magic: Highlights and revelations

My tour started at Town Square Theater, which is just inside the entrance to Magic Kingdom.

There is a small check-in desk outside of Tony's Town Square Restaurant where a cast member gave me a name tag and headset to use during the tour and also took my lunch order, so that it could be ready and waiting for me when we took a break for lunch.

Once everyone had checked in, our tour guide Lynn went over the basics of what would be involved — lots of walking and standing, plenty of water and bathroom breaks and no photos or videos (I took my own photos after the tour). She also helped us set up our headsets.

Then she teased us with a bit of magic that would be revealed at the end of the tour by telling us that her "onstage" answer for how Tinkerbell flies during the nightly fireworks show was pixie dust, but she would give us the "backstage" answer at the end of the tour.

disney world underground tour

We did a lot of "walking and talking," but we also stopped at certain points so our tour guide could delve deeper into certain topics. Our first stop was Main Street, U.S.A. where we learned about the construction of the Magic Kingdom, right down to the color of the bricks. I had never paid much attention to them, but the bricks leading into the park are red. This was Disney's way of "rolling out the red carpet" for every guest who enters the park.

As we walked down Main Street, U.S.A., our tour guide pointed out the names painted on the windows above the shops. I already knew from being a self-admitted Disney nerd that the windows paid homage to people who helped make the park what it is today, but there were some I had never even noticed.

Walt Disney's name is painted above the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor at the end of Main Street, U.S.A. This is not only because he is the "director" of the show and the director's name historically came last in the film's credits, but also because he loved vanilla ice cream.

disney world underground tour

We made our way through Adventureland to the Jungle Cruise, where our guide shared interesting tidbits about the ride, like how Walt wanted to use real animals but was (luckily) advised against it.

Not surprisingly, we all enthusiastically answered "yes," when our guide asked if we wanted to go for a ride. Then, rather than the typical Jungle Cruise spiel (which cracks me up every time), our guide took the microphone and used our time on the ride to discuss how the mechanics of the boats and animals work, along with some Easter eggs to look out for.

disney world underground tour

The ride revelations continued as we walked past Pirates of the Caribbean and Splash Mountain — and then things became really interesting.

Our guide took us through a door marked "Cast Members Only" and we were suddenly in a backstage area behind Splash Mountain. I felt like we were sneaking around behind the Wizard of Oz's curtain, which would have been more than enough for me. Then our guide said she had a surprise for us.

disney world underground tour

We walked right past the huge warehouse that stages the Festival of Fantasy parade floats just in time to see them preparing the floats for the noon parade. Based on what I learned there and what I know of my own driving skills, I would never have what it takes to pilot one of those parade floats.

disney world underground tour

By then, it was time for lunch, which was at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe in Frontierland. We had about 30 minutes to eat, but our food was waiting for us when we arrived. Inside each name placard marking our seats was yet another surprise — a golden keepsake pin to commemorate our tour.

disney world underground tour

After lunch, we moved into Liberty Square, which, I learned, has one of the last Liberty Bell replicas made from the same mold as the original in Philadelphia (Disney added the distinctive crack on its own).

The Haunted Mansion sat just behind us as we discussed other elements of Liberty Square, so our guide took that opportunity to share details on its design and the special effects used to create the happy haunts who reside there. She then ushered us straight onto the ride, which I looked at in a whole new light after learning more about how it all worked.

disney world underground tour

I think the tour guides know that seeing the secret tunnel system — dubbed the "Utilidor" by Disney — is one of the big reasons people take this tour. The Utilidor is something of an urban myth for Disney nerds and a part of the parks that most guests never see or even realize exists.

Referring to the Utilidor as a tunnel is a bit of a misnomer. The part of the Magic Kingdom most guests see is actually on the second floor of the park. The first floor is the Utilidor.

We saw the tubes where 83,000 pounds of trash per day are whisked away from the park, walked past costumed cast members on their way to meet-and-greets with guests and saw walls lined with photos and memorabilia that tied back to everything we had learned about the history and creation of the park during our tour. Since no photos were allowed, you'll have to take the tour for yourself if you want to get a peek.

disney world underground tour

The last stop on our tour was where our guide revealed the Tinkerbell scoop she had promised us at the beginning of the tour.

If you are old enough to read this, you probably already know that Tinkerbell doesn't use just pixie dust to fly. Our guide revealed exactly where she lands at the end of her 30-second flight from the top of the 189-foot-tall Cinderella Castle. A young child walked past as she was explaining it to us and the guide stopped so as not to "ruin the magic."

disney world underground tour

Was it worth it?

You might think that seeing how the magic is made would ruin some of the mystique of Disney World, but it actually made me appreciate it more than ever -- which was already quite a lot based on the amount of time and money I spend there. I learned so much about the care and attention to detail that went into building the Magic Kingdom and that still goes into operating the park today.

So much of Disney is in the details. Spending five hours walking through the park and focusing exclusively on those details only made the magic stronger.

One of my favorite things about Disney World is that there is always something new to discover — be it a name on a window, a "hidden Mickey" or learning something new about the "man behind the mouse," Walt Disney.

Whether you're a Disney history buff or just really into getting a peek behind the curtain at Disney World, this tour is bound to show you things you've never noticed before. You have to be OK with spending the morning and early afternoon doing more touring than riding, but after the tour is over, you'll step onto those beloved attractions with a newfound admiration for what goes into keeping the magic alive all these years later.

For those groups who are into all things Disney, yes, this tour was definitely worth the time — and money. And of course, there's the added benefit of being able to tell all your friends that you've been inside Disney World's "secret" Utilidors.

Underground Tunnels at Disney World

Disney Underground Tunnels at Disney World

The underground tunnels at Disney World, are they legend, myth or real? If you are reading this then you are looking to find out about the famous underground tunnels and if they exist? Let’s take a peak behind the curtain at Disney World.

Are There Underground Tunnels at Walt Disney World?

Yes, there really are underground tunnels at Disney World, specifically beneath the Magic Kingdom park. There official name is Disney Utilidor Tunnels, and they serve a very clear purpose which makes Magic Kingdom even more magical and the idea was from the mind of Walt Disney himself.

The Walt Disney Influence

Walt Disney did not want any guests at Magic Kingdom to see cast members from different lands passing through other areas of the theme park. For example, a Frontierland cast member passing through Fantasyland.

disney world underground tour

With cast members costumes being so different in each land it became crucial to Walt that to retain the magic inside the theme park that a system was required to keep cast members and characters in the correct parts of the park by using the Disney Utilidors. The Utilidor underground tunnel system at Magic Kingdom was the answer.

How Many Underground Tunnels are There at Disney World?

Rather than a set of different underground tunnels the Disney Utilidors network runs circular around Magic Kingdom with a tunnel running underneath the middle of the park linking Main Street USA to Fantasyland. Below is a map of how the underground Disney Utilidors tunnel system runs underneath Magic Kingdom.

The space underneath Magic Kingdom is not just used for allowing cast members to move around the park using the Disney tunnels. There are also break out areas, locker rooms and cafeterias for cast members to take a break during there working day. You will also find grab and go food spots in the tunnels too for cast members to use.

The cafeteria underneath Magic Kingdom is known as the ‘Mouseketeria’. This is the main spot for cast members to take a break and grab something to eat and drink. Similar to a food court there are different dining options with Subway reported to be located down there and very popular.

The Disney tunnels also make it easy for supplies and goods to get moved around the park to the various shops and restaurants you find at Magic Kingdom .

Costumes and Characters Underground at Magic Kingdom

There are also Costume and Dressing Rooms located underneath Magic Kingdom. This allows for face characters like the Disney Princesses to have their costumes ready and get their makeup done.

disney world underground tour

All cast members who wear special costumes must collect them at the beginning of each day and return them at the end of their shift. This is done using their Cast member ID which is scanned. If they are to be wearing multiple costumes during the day (this is very common at WDW) then they will scan them all out and use black suitcases to wheel them around at they work through their shift for the day.

disney world underground tour

You will not see any special costumes off Disney World property as cast members have to arrive and depart in their basics – a plain white/grey t shirts and black shorts. Cast members can even be charged if they do not return costumes within the required times.

There Is a Warm-Up Room Too

With so many different types of performers at Magic Kingdom it is important that they warm up before heading out into the park to entertain guests. Inside the tunnels there is also a warm-up room where a coach will make performers and stretch and warm up to help prevent injury and get them energized for the day ahead.

These might even be performers taking part in the Festival of Fantasy Parade .

Tomorrowland Stairwells that lead to the Disney World Underground Tunnels

The Magic Kingdom Tunnels are Color Coded

Each part of the underground tunnel system is color coded so that cast members know which part of the park they are underneath. The one place underground though where your location is obvious is when you are underneath Cinderella Castle . Because the Castle is surrounded by a moat this area of the tunnel system has a large dip to compensate for the moat.

Time To Take Out The Trash at Magic kingdom

There is also a trash chute/pipe system fixed to the ceiling of the tunnels. This allow cast members responsible for keeping Magic Kingdom tidy to move trash around the park and dispose of it without having  to move lots of rubbish bags in front of the guests.

Is There an Underground Disney World Jail?

disney world underground tour

This is a topic that is kept very secret by Disney and for good reason. However, it is reported that the so called Undergroud Disney World Jail is more of a security office where guest maybe taken to get them out of the park whilst waiting for possible police attendance.

Are There Any Other Disney Underground Tunnels at the Parks?

Epcot has a very small underground tunnel system that runs in a U shape underneath what was called Futureworld at the front of the park. The tunnel system is small though compared to what is used at Magic Kingdom.

Can You Visit the Walt Disney World Underground Tunnels?

The only way to visit the Utilidor underground tunnels at Magic Kingdom is to book a place on Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom Tour this 5 hour guided Magic Kingdom tour takes you on an indepth look at Magic Kingdom and it’s history and secrets. Included is a visit underground to the Utilidor tunnels.

The Disney Underground Tunnels

I have often been told that when you are enjoying Magic Kingdom that you are actually on the second floor of the park. This may very well be true with all the activities going on underneath your feet as you make your way around the park. There is a whole hive of activity underneath you that helps makes your Magic Kingdom experience all that more magical.

The visionary that was Walt Disney certainly knew how to put the magic into Magic Kingdom.

Keys to the Kingdom tour check in sign

Disney World’s Keys to the Kingdom tour offers a unique opportunity for guests to learn about the history of Walt Disney World. It also provides backstage access to the behind-the-scenes locations where the Disney magic is made. It is the perfect tour for the Disney fan who has experienced the parks before and wants to try something different on their next Disney vacation. Keep reading to find out more about my last experience on the Keys to the Kingdom tour at the Magic Kingdom.

What does the Keys to the Kingdom tour include?

Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom tour is a 5-hour walking tour of the Magic Kingdom, one of the most beloved parks in the Disney family. An experienced tour guide takes you through the experience, beginning at the Town Square Theater at the front of Magic Kingdom.

Throughout the tour, you find out the history behind some of your favorite attractions like the Haunted Mansion and Jungle Cruise. You also discover the history behind the theme parks. This includes stops at locations down Main Street USA, Liberty Square, and little-known facts about Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse himself.

The tour is very well-paced, offering water and bathroom breaks throughout the experience. Our tour guide was fantastic at offering breaks, and we even experienced some rides along the way. Your tour includes a lunch at Pecos Bill, a part of your tour cost.

The 5-hour look at the Magic Kingdom really offers the full background magic tour experience with a stroll through the underground corridors beneath Main Street USA, the legendary hidden areas of the park. Get the inside scoop on all of your favorites in the most iconic theme park of them all.

Is the Keys to the Kingdom tour worth it?

I think the Keys to the Kingdom tour is definitely worth it for the ultimate fan of Disney parks. It is not a tour for those at the Walt Disney World resort for the first time, as it takes you to the backstage areas. The tour reveals many of the secret locations of the parks. For those that love Disney history, want to see the underground service tunnels of the cast members, and the parade floats and parade route, you will have a great time on this tour.

Do take note that this tour includes a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes for the duration of the tour. Prepare for the weather. Another bit of important information is that guests must be at least 16 years of age to participate in the tour. Guests get a fascinating history of Magic Kingdom Park, but younger children would prefer to ride the rides, so Disney leaves this tour to the adults.

Magic Kingdom theater entrance

How much does the Keys to the Kingdom tour cost?

The price of this tour currently costs $114 per person plus tax. Tour groups leave throughout the day from the Town Square Theater at the Magic Kingdom. The theater is located near the front of the park and the train station. Check the start time for your tour, as various tour groups leave at different times during the day. As you select your tour time, be sure to take into account the amount of time it will take you to arrive at the park. Include the time it takes to go through security and enter Magic Kingdom.

Annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club Members do receive a 15% discount. Your tour does include your lunch.

How do you check in for the Keys to the Kingdom tour?

When you arrive at the Town Square Theater, you will check in at the front desk to the left. Disney recommends you arrive 15 minutes before your tour to have plenty of time. You will meet your Disney Keys to the Kingdom tour guide at the theater.

Upon your arrival, you will receive a lanyard, your listening device, and a name tag. You will also see a menu from Pecos Bill and make your lunch order. This makes it a seamless process at lunchtime. Your lunch awaits you in a private room around noon.

After check-in, your Disney guide starts the tour! Our tour began down Main Street USA with some Disney history behind the windows on the second floor. We began to learn the hidden secrets of classic attractions along the way.

Magic Kingdom building

What happens on the tour?

The tour begins with a stroll down Main Street USA. You learn about the Five Keys of Disney and the purchase of the land for the Magic Kingdom . You also discover more about the design of the park and the historical background of the park.

Next, you will most likely make your way to Adventureland. We made our way onto the Jungle Cruise ride for our own special tour. Our tour guide provided great commentary through the entire ride. Afterward, we learned all about the Enchanted Tiki Room’s history and the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Jungle Cruise Keys to the Kingdom

Next, you will most likely make your way backstage near Splash Mountain. Here, the cast members prepare for the parade routes. We saw Mickey adjusting his head, the princesses practicing their waves, and the Maleficent float breathing fire. This behind-the-scenes access is quite incredible. You can tell the guides have taken much thought to planning the best day possible. Your view of the parade setup may vary according to the time of your tour. Luckily, ours was right before a parade, so we were able to see plenty.

Afterward, you will enjoy your lunch at Pecos Bill. Next, you learn about the history of Liberty Square and the Liberty Tree. Next up, Haunted Mansion for the skip-the-line access and ride during this special tour. Then, it’s time for the Utilidors!

This is such a special treat! You will spend about 35-45 minutes under Main Street and Cinderella Castle. Tour participants see various cast members getting lunch, traveling to their next location, or moving merchandise. Tour groups may not have cell phones or any recording equipment out in the backstage or Utilidor areas. In the end, you will hear some of the histories of Roy Disney. His great contribution to his brother’s legacy is quite remarkable.

What are the 4 Disney Keys?

Throughout the Magic Kingdom’s Keys to the Kingdom tour, we learned about the Four Disney Keys. These keys are the foundation of Disney’s success which include safety, courtesy, show, and efficiency. The fifth key added in the past few years features inclusion.

Great article. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it. So far, I’ve been unable to get reservations for the Keys to the Kingdom Tour. I’ll continue to keep trying and even have subscribed to Mouse Watchers to keep a lookout for me. I plan to try and do walk up but my question is will I be able to get in early enough to Magic Kingdom to try to do walk up.

April 24, 2023 at 2:03 pm

That is an excellent question. I know they allow those with early dining reservations into the park early, so it would seem similar. I may try asking Guest Services earlier in the week to double-check! Hopefully, Mouse Watchers will come through for you. I have had good luck with them with many tours and dining reservations! Glad you enjoyed the article and thank you for commenting!

Hi Daniel, our tour was at 9:30, so we were able to see the noon parade set up. Hope that helps! It was a great experience.

Disney Tips, Tricks, & Everything in Between

2023 Keys to the Kingdom Review

disney world underground tour

Keys to the Kingdom is a 5 hour walking tour at Magic Kingdom, detailing the history and fun facts about the Most Magical Place on Earth. Here’s my 2023 Keys to the Kingdom review and tips on how best to experience this tour! Caution: spoilers ahead!

disney world underground tour

When Should I Book Keys to the Kingdom, and What Does it Cost?

As soon as you know you want to do this tour, book it! Reservations are available up to 60 days in advance. Use the Disney website to book – that’s the easiest way to get a reservation!

Tour times are mostly offered at 8, 8:30, 9, and 9:30am. Double check the dates you are interested in for specific times! Once you book, make sure you have park admission and a park pass reservation for Magic Kingdom as this is required for the tour!

Keys to the Kingdom costs $114+tax per person. Discounts are available for APs and DVC Members!

Who Should do the Keys to the Kingdom Tour?

If you’re a fan of Magic Kingdom, Disney parks, Disney history, Walt Disney, or Roy Disney, this tour is for you! Also, if you are interested in seeing backstage areas, this tour is also for you! Keep in mind everyone doing the tour must be 16 years or older. This tour is also fully accessible for those with mobility impairments!

What Can I Expect to Learn & See on Keys to the Kingdom?

OK – if you already know a lot about the Magic Kingdom or Disney Parks history, you probably won’t learn anything too surprising. Here’s a brief rundown of what we learned about and where we went on our tour:

disney world underground tour

  • Main Street USA – learned about the history of the property owned by Disney in Florida, and a “who’s who” of some of the windows, with a noted emphasis on Roy Disney
  • Adventureland – talked about the storytelling in Adventureland, with a ride on the Jungle Cruise included. Also discussed some of the history of Audio-Animatronics, and learned some fun facts about Pirates of the Caribbean & Tiki Room.
  • Backstage – we entered backstage near Splash Mountain/Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and learned a lot about entertainment & parades. Our tour guide came from an entertainment background within the company, so he shared a lot about his journey as a Cast Member and some personal stories. We saw parade floats and learned about how they are maintained and some of their operational features, along with the responsibilities of some Entertainment Cast Members.
  • Lunch – next we took a lunch break at Pecos Bill’s. We could order an entree and a bottled drink; I chose nachos & a Diet Coke. They had a little toppings bar set up for us, too!
  • Frontierland – we walked through Frontierland to get to Liberty Square. We did not make any stops in Frontierland.
  • Liberty Square – we gathered on the dock area for the steamboat and learned about some of the details of Liberty Square, with an emphasis on the Hall of Presidents and Haunted Mansion. Next up, we rode Haunted Mansion and then discussed some of the tricks and effects that we saw on the ride.
  • Fantasyland – we didn’t stop in Fantasyland, but we went straight to a door leading backstage and entered the Utilidors! This was very cool and definitely the highlight for me. We learned about some of the operations of the Utilidors and where the corridors lead, and saw a few rooms/offices that help support the operation of the Magic Kingdom. We also saw a couple princesses getting ready to go up to Cinderella’s Royal Table to greet guests at lunch.
  • Backstage Main Street – we exited the Utilidors behind Main Street, where we learned more about Tinker Bell’s flight from Cinderella Castle during the fireworks. We saw where she lands each night, which was really interesting and surprising. We also saw the facility where they store all the ice cream bars.
  • Conclusion of tour – at this point our tour was over and we handed in our listening devices and parted ways with the tour group.

Tips for Experiencing Keys to the Kingdom

If you are participating in a tour that begins before the park opens, think about your transportation wisely! We booked the 8am tour on a day when the park was scheduled to open at 9, meaning that Early Entry for resort guests began at 8:30. Since we are local, we drove ourselves in. We planned to arrive at the gates as early as possible. We parked around 7am after encountering no Cast Members at the parking booths, and we were held at security until about 7:15am. The security guard let us know that the only mode of transportation available at this time was the ferryboat – so once we were cleared through security we hustled over to the boarding area. It wasn’t long before we were underway to the Magic Kingdom, and we made our way over to the tapstiles, which opened right at 7:45am.

If you’re staying on Disney property, I would strongly suggest looking into using Uber or Lyft to get you to the Ticket & Transportation Center, as buses may or may not be running that early. Another great option is the Minnie Van service, which drops guests off right outside the gates of the Magic Kingdom.

If you have a later tour, you don’t need to worry as much about the logistics of transportation, but do make sure you arrive early to give yourself ample time to get through security and into the park. The check-in area is just past the Main Street train station, on the right, at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. Arriving early allows you to get your listening device, place your lunch order, and do a quick bathroom stop before embarking on your tour.

disney world underground tour

During the Tour

If you have a physical disability requiring the use of an ECV or wheelchair, this tour is fully accessible for you! Your tour guide will talk to you in advance about boarding the Jungle Cruise and Haunted Mansion so that they can let the Cast Members at the attractions know.

If you have food allergies, make sure to mention that when you place your lunch order so that the chefs at Pecos Bill’s can prepare a special meal for you. Disney is great with allergies, so you don’t need to worry about not being able to find something to eat.

They will also provide you with Dasani water bottles on the tour, but feel free to bring additional snacks and/or drinks. Also, sunscreen up! This is a long tour and has a lot of walking and standing in the Florida heat. Be prepared!

There are designated bathroom stops during the tour, but if you need to go, make sure to tell your tour guide and the group will wait for you.

There is absolutely no photography or video recording backstage, and there are a few opportunities to take pictures throughout the tour. Our tour guide told us if we wanted to take a couple quick pictures we could, but I only took one the entire tour because I was too busy listening to the information!

You will be given an audio listening device so you can hear what the tour guide is saying. If you encounter any issues with your device, let your tour guide know ASAP, as they carry spares with them. We had a couple that died out on our tour and they were swapped out within a minute or two.

Another thing to note is that the tour guides who run the tour are extremely well-versed in Disney Parks history, so feel free to ask them any questions that come up. If they don’t know the answer, they will reach out to their team and try to get an answer for you! Some of the questions can only be answered backstage so as other park guests don’t overhear and have the magic spoiled for them. They’ll let you know if they need to answer your question backstage!

Tron and Keys to the Kingdom

With Tron requiring a boarding group via virtual queue or the purchase of an Individual Lightning Lane , talk to your tour guide if you received a callback time that is during your tour. They will work with you and get you rescheduled so you don’t miss out on riding Tron! Additionally, if your tour takes place around 1pm (during the 2nd drop for the virtual queue), make sure to let your tour guide know that you will need to take a moment to book yourself a boarding group. The Cast Members understand and are more than accommodating!

What to do After Keys to the Kingdom

After your tour, you’ll likely be pretty tired from walking around all day, and you’ll probably also be on information overload. If you’re local, I would recommend heading home and resting before returning to the parks. If you’re visiting from out of town, I would do a slow-moving/restful attraction like Carousel of Progress or take a ride on the Monorail . A table service meal is also a great option, so you can sit with your party and talk about everything you learned on the tour!

My Thoughts on the Tour

I thought Keys to the Kingdom was informative and I appreciated our tour guide’s personal insights. He did a great job weaving stories from his days as an Entertainment Cast Member into the storytelling and production that goes into running the Magic Kingdom. I didn’t learn too much that was groundbreaking or new to me, but I did learn more about Roy Disney and his involvement in getting the Magic Kingdom & Walt Disney World Resort up and running. Although I heard things that I mostly knew already, it was insightful to be standing in the park, looking at different aspects of the park both onstage and backstage, and seeing it all come together to tell different stories. Magic Kingdom is not my favorite park at Walt Disney World (shoutout to Epcot) but after going on Keys to the Kingdom I now see the flagship Florida Disney park in a new light and appreciate the operations required to support such a complex park.

I would gladly go on this tour again, and I’m interested in taking it with a different tour guide! I loved our tour guide’s information and personal stories from his time in Entertainment, and I would love to hear other perspectives and details too.

Keys to the Kingdom Tour

Love it, a nice little something Special and different. It's about 5 hours

I think you'd like it Chin

Oooh...how early is early?

Thanks PP - I may look at doing this the first day when I am awake at 5 am!

We've got a Segway in Aberdeen but I've never eaten there.

disney world underground tour

but how much is it.

Here is information about the tour, including price:

http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/tours-and-experiences/keys-to-the-kingdom/

$74 though, on top of the entrance fee ....I assume lunch is included.

Anyone been - Is it worth the money ?

I followed the link to the info but it really doesn't tell you very much. Has anyone experienced this first-hand? 4.5/5 hrs is a long time to spend walking on a hard surface! There must be a lunchbreak and I would hope that a nice, sit-down Disney meal was included - am I being over-optimistic?

disney world underground tour

We did the Keys to the Kingdom a few years ago. Great tour, very informative. They take you under the MK to the utilidors, you get to see the laundry, costume place and we saw Mary Poppins getting ready to go 'upstairs', we also got taken to where all the parade floats are kept and the guy who is 'the Beast' had a chat with us. We really enjoyed it, it is a lot of walking but well worth it. When we went it was only 4 hours with a short drinks break, now I think it incorporates lunch.

I have just read that lunch at Columbia House is now included. cost of the tour is $78.81 pp.

Underground Tours at Disney

Beneath the Magic Kingdom, tunnels and passageways give secret access to park maintenance engineers and cast members, allowing them to appear like magic right where they're needed. Take a tour of tunnels and other areas not usually open to the public to get a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the Disney theme parks.

Going Underground

When the original Disneyland was built in 1955, characters and maintenance workers got around on the park's main roads or backstage areas screened by foliage. In the mid-1970s, the newly-built Walt Disney World in Florida improved transportation access for the workers through an extensive series of corridors. The corridors were constructed at ground level and then covered with about 5 million square feet of soil excavated when building the Seven Seas Lagoon. The Disney rides are built over the tops of these corridors on the second and third levels.

Behind-the-Scenes Magic

Take a seven-hour tour that gives you a look at the inner workings of the four Disney theme parks. Known as Backstage Magic, the tour transports you to Epcot, Magic Kingdom Park, the Animal Kingdom Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios. The tour includes the Utilidors in the Magic Kingdom where you'll see the characters' dressing areas, transport systems and dining areas as well as how the maintenance and supply systems function. To keep the Magic Kingdom magic for younger guests who could be upset by seeing such things as Mickey Mouse without his head, the tour is open only to those 16 or older.

Follow in His Footsteps

In Anaheim, you can't tour Disneyland's modest tunnels stretching under Tomorrowland, but you can take a look at the development of the park at the Walk in Walt's Disneyland Footsteps tour. Visit areas not open to the average park guest, such as Walt Disney's own apartment in the Town Square where he masterminded the conversion of a citrus orchard into every child's dream destination. Experience some of the park's original attractions that still delight visitors just as they did in 1955 when the park opened.

Be Prepared

While bus transportation is provided between the four theme parks on the Backstage Magic tour, be prepared to do a lot of walking. Wear comfortable shoes, but make sure they have closed toes and heels to meet the park's safety regulations for the tour. Make sure each member of your party has a photo ID or you will have to forfeit your reservation without a refund. Both the Backstage Magic and Walk in Walt's Disneyland Footsteps tours include lunch and bottled water.
