Battery Saver Mode Dodge Journey [Meaning & Reset]

This article will provide an explanation of the meaning behind “Battery Saver Mode” coming up on your Dodge Journey, including its main causes and solutions for resetting the alert.

Without further delay, let’s dive in!

What Does “Battery Saver Mode” Mean on a Dodge Journey?

Table of Contents

The battery on your Dodge Journey plays a critical role in the operation of your vehicle.

It provides power to run all of the systems in your Dodge Journey, including the air conditioning, radio, and navigation system.

And when you start your engine, it also powers up the starter motor so it can turn over.

If the battery voltage drops below a certain level, the computer will automatically shut down some of these systems to save the battery.

This is known as “Battery Saver Mode” and is designed to protect your battery from draining completely, causing your car to stall.

Here are some things you might experience when the Battery Saver Mode alert appears:

  • Your Dodge Journey may fail to start.
  • Interior and exterior lights may become dimmer.
  • The infotainment screen may stop working.
  • The car may stall.
  • Windows may malfunction.
  • Battery Saver Mode Alert

What Causes the Dodge Journey “Battery Saver Mode” Alert?

Now that I have briefly explained what “battery saver mode” is,

Let’s now look at the main possible causes of this fault message.

1. Worn Out Battery:

The number one cause of the “battery saver mode” message on your Dodge Journey is a bad battery.

The most likely cause is that your battery is old and has reached the end of its life.

Over time the battery losses power, and its ability to hold a charge diminishes.

When this happens, the alternator can’t charge your battery properly,

And your Dodge Journey may enter “battery saver mode” in an effort to prevent the battery from over-discharging while you driving.

From my experience as a mechanic, a Dodge Journey battery should last at least 3-5 years before needing to be replaced.

If your car battery is older than this, then it may be time to replace it.

The quickest way to tell if your battery is bad is to jump-start your vehicle.

If this solves the problem, then you can be confident that the battery is bad and needs to be replaced.

2. Faulty Alternator:

The second most likely cause of the battery saver active problem is a damaged alternator.

The alternator is responsible for generating electricity that is used to charge your car battery.

If the alternator fails, it will be unable to generate enough power to keep up with the demands of starting your vehicle or performing other electrical functions.

This can cause your Dodge Journey to enter “battery saver mode” since the battery is not getting charged.

In fact, the opposite effect is happening.

One trick to check if the problem is caused by a bad alternator is to start the vehicle,

Then leave it running for a few minutes (3-5 minutes).

After that, disconnect the negative battery terminal.

If your Journey switches off as soon as you disconnect the negative battery terminal, then it’s a sign the alternator is bad.

If the car continues to run although you disconnected one of the terminals, then the problem is not with your alternator.

3. Loose Battery Terminals:

Another reason why your Dodge Journey is displaying “Battery saver mode” on the dashboard is that the battery terminals are loose.

When battery terminals are loose, it makes it difficult for power to flow from the alternator to the battery.

This makes it hard for your vehicle battery to charge and run at full capacity.

If you have a loose battery terminal, it can cause your Dodge Journey to enter Battery saver mode.

4. Worn Serpentine Belt:

The Serpentine belt (Also known as the Alternator belt) is a rubber-like belt in your Dodge that connects the pulley on your alternator and other components like the power steering pump and air-con.

If this belt breaks due to wear and tear, the pulleys won’t turn, which causes the alternator not to work.

As a result of this, a “Battery saver mode” warning message will come on.

How to Fix and Reset Dodge Journey’s “Battery Saver Mode” Message

Lastly, let’s look at how to go about combating this warning message.

Check the Battery Terminals

The first thing I recommend that you do is check the battery terminals and make sure that they’re tight.

If they’re loose, tighten them as much as you can with a screwdriver.

Whilst you are still there, you also want to check if there is no visible sign of corrosion on both terminals and the battery itself.

If there is corrosion, clean this off using a wire brush and hot water.

Then reconnect the battery terminals, if the message is still there, move on to step two.

2. Replace the Battery

If you have checked the battery terminals and there is no sign of corrosion, then you need to replace your car’s battery.

But before changing the battery, make sure that you have it tested (You can do this at your dealer or auto stores like Autozone).

The reason for this is that if you have a dead battery, it could be caused by something else, like not driving long enough.

You don’t want to replace the battery only to find out that it didn’t fix the problem (Unless your Dodge Journey battery is more than three years old)

So once you have changed your car battery, restart your car and see if the message still appears on your dashboard.

In most cases, replacing the battery will fix the problem.

3. Have the Alternator Tested/Replaced

If the battery is still in good condition, then the alternator may be the problem.

Have it tested to see if it’s working properly, or replaced it if necessary. A good alternator will read anywhere between 13.5 to 14.5 volts when you are idling.

Please Note: Other things like a Blown battery sensor fuse or bad ground wire can also trigger this alert, but from my experience, it always boils down to these three leading causes.

How to Reset Battery Saver Mode on Dodge Journey and Causes of Battery Saver Mode

The Dodge Journey has a feature called “battery-saver mode,” which turns on when the battery has low power and the electrical system isn’t working correctly. The battery-saver warning light pops up on the vehicle dashboard to let the driver know there is a problem with the battery.

If you have the same problem and want to know how to reset battery-saver mode, you are in the right place. If your battery-saver warning light has popped up and you want to find out the cause and solve it, don’t worry; I’ve got you covered.

I have discussed the causes and solutions of battery saver mode on the Dodge Journey in this article.

What is Battery Saver Mode on Dodge Journey?

Battery-saver mode on the Dodge Journey is basically a restriction on battery use. The battery-saver mode is turned on when the car’s battery doesn’t have enough power to do everything.

When the battery-saver mode appears, the operating power of some parts will be limited. Your Dodge Journey’s heater, air conditioning, infotainment system, and steering wheel will not function properly.

How to Reset Battery Saver Mode on Dodge Journey (03 Simple Methods)

A Dodge Journey battery-saver mode reset is not a permanent solution. It just cleans error codes but does not solve the problem. The warning light will appear repeatedly.

It is recommended to fix the issues that are triggering the battery-saver mode to appear. After solving the issue, the warning light will stop appearing on your dashboard. The Dodge Journey’s battery-saver mode can be reset in 3 ways.

01. How to Reset Battery Saver Mode Through OBD-2 Scanner

The easiest way to reset the Dodge Journey’s battery-saver mode is by using an OBD-II scanner and clearing the codes.

Sometimes, the warning light may still illuminate after repairing the faulty parts.

In this case, you need to use a diagnosis device to clear the error codes from the instrument cluster.

02. Resetting Battery Saver Mode Through Disconnecting Battery Cables

Resetting error codes is also possible if diagnostic devices like OBD-II are unavailable. You can reset the battery-saver mode warning light by disconnecting the battery cables.

This method sometimes works and sometimes fails to solve the issue. Disconnect the battery’s negative and positive terminals for 3-5 minutes. Then press the horn multiple times and try to switch on the vehicle’s headlights.

The action will release the rest of the vehicle’s energy. Now, reconnect the battery terminals after 3 minutes. In this way, the battery-saver mode warning light may disappear.

03. Identify the Faulty Part and Resolve the Problem

The best way to turn off battery saver mode is to find the part that isn’t working right and fix it.

First, check everything that has to do with the battery. This includes the alternator, the cables that connect them, the serpentine belt, and the sensor. If there is dust and rust on the connecting terminals, clean them.

If any part seems faulty, replace it. And finally, if the battery is old enough, replace the old battery with a new one.

What Causes Battery Saver Mode (05 Common Causes)

When the car’s electrical components fail, the battery-saver mode on the instrument cluster usually activates. The battery-saver warning light activates due to 06 causes. Let’s discuss these causes briefly:

01. Faulty Alternator

A faulty alternator is one of the most common causes of battery saver mode. The alternator is responsible for converting the engine’s mechanical energy into electricity.

The alternator charges the vehicle’s battery and helps to supply electricity to the other necessary components. A malfunctioning alternator means the battery is not charging properly, but the battery has to supply all the electricity.

So the battery drains more quickly. As a result, the battery-saver mode is activated. Generally, a Dodge Journey’s alternator can last up to 100,000 miles. So, before replacing the alternator, inspect it properly to determine whether it is faulty or not.

02. Faulty Cable Connection

Sometimes the alternator and battery both work properly, but due to a poor connection, the warning light illuminates. When the battery connection cable is old enough, it reduces the electricity flow from the alternator to the battery.

Sometimes damaged cables are also responsible for activating the battery-saver warning light. If the installed battery is 1.5 to 2 years old, corrosion starts at the battery terminals.

Corrosion causes connection loss or electric supply reduction. As a result, the battery-saver mode illuminates. Check the battery terminals and clean them if corroded.

03. Bad Ground Connection

A negative terminal connects the battery and the vehicle body, known as the ground connection. Both the battery and the engine require a ground connection to function properly. Electrical issues occur if the ground connection fails due to corrosion or rust.

If there is a problem with the ground connection, the alternator’s electric supply can go up and down, which turns on the battery-saving mode. To fix the problem, make sure the ground connections are clean and tightly attached to the car.

04. Faulty Serpentine Belt

The serpentine belt is the fundamental part of an alternator. If the serpentine belt is shiny or damaged, it reduces the alternator’s performance.

As a result, the battery will not charge properly and sometimes cause the car to shut down while driving. That’s why you must inspect the serpentine belt and replace it if any flaws are discovered.

05. Faulty Sensor

If the IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) isn’t installed correctly or the sensor is faulty, it causes a battery-saver warning light to pop on the instrument cluster.

The intelligent battery sensor is located at the negative terminal of the battery. You should check the sensor and replace it if it is faulty.

You can also hire an experienced mechanic or go to the dealer for the process to be done. Replacing IBS costs around $300 to $320, including labor costs.

06. Issues with the Battery

If there is an issue with the battery or the battery is old enough, it causes the battery saver mode to turn on. Vehicles with weak batteries cannot supply enough voltage to run their electrical systems.

So, use a multimeter to check the battery voltage, and the voltage should be 12 to 13 volts, which is idle. If the voltage is lower or higher than 12 to 13 volts, the battery is faulty and must be replaced.

Generally, a Dodge Journey battery lasts about 4 to 6 years. The Dodge Journey battery should be replaced if it has already reached its life expectancy. It means even if the battery is working perfectly fine but is 6 years old, you should replace it before it gets faulty.

People Also Ask

What is the purpose of battery saver mode on.

The battery-saver mode helps to save battery power by limiting some features of the Dodge Journey. Also, it indicates that the battery drains too fast and that something is wrong with the charging system.

Can I drive with the battery saver mode active?

It is not recommended to drive when the battery-saver mode is activated. The battery saver mode indicates the battery is draining quickly, and there is not enough charge left to supply the necessary power to the vehicle.

If you continue driving, your engine may shut down between 25 minutes to 2 hours. So, if you see the warning light on your dashboard, stop driving and try to resolve the problem.

Does battery saver mode mean I need a new battery?

No, battery saver mode does not mean you need a new battery. The battery-saver mode can be turned on by problems with the alternator, connecting cables, or sensors, among other things. So, check and fix the faulty parts before buying a new battery.

Final Words

You now understand that simply resetting will not resolve the battery-saver mode issue.First, identify what is triggering the battery-saver warning light. To determine the cause, thoroughly inspect all necessary components and resolve the battery-saver mode issue.

You can also take your Dodge Journey to an experienced mechanic shop for proper treatment if you are not a greasy monkey.

Hi everyone, I have a 2014 Dodge Journey. 7 months ago I replaced the battery as it had died. I do believe it was the original battery. Two weeks after that I replaced my alternator. Now my battery light went on while driving to work. Made it there fine. After work the light didn’t go on right away. I figured it was ok but no. Can’t have that with a journey. The “battery power save mode has been activated” message came on my screen then a minute later my battery light came back on. I’m going to get this checked out. It could be a few things but I’m wondering if this is another fun issue that’s going to keep happening.

2015 "battery saver mode"

  • Add to quote

I searched around but didn't find a definite answer, truck is just over a year old and has 15k on the clock, I am getting a battery saver mode message everytime I cold start the truck after its sat for 8+hrs, anyone else have theirs do this? I called the dealer it's going in for them to check the batteries the day after christmas they said it might have a bad battery?

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/2.../1525642-battery-saver-mode.html#post17410658

Mine has been doing it all the time since it's gotten real cold. Message goes away on a restart after running for a while.

mine goes away also but it always comes back the next day

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Mine only did it on my '15 after it had sat for a while and there was a small draw from the road radio. Check you connections and even put a battery maintainer on. With the cost of these batteries i've put them on every diesel i own except my welding machine.

you have a pretty impressive sig, badass trucks man

worth mentioning I guess my raceme always shows my alternator putting out right at 14.6v so it's charging them plenty I'd say

Out of curiosity.....what amount of run time do you have in between starts, and which alternator do you have???

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

So if I understand the links about 'Battery Saver Mode' correctly, it's more about PROTECTING the batteries than SAVING the batteries. In short, look toward the charging system (alternator) more than the storage system (batteries). Not sure if my input is helpful or not...

that's where it confuses me, I saw some say a reflashed fixed it, some say batteries fixed it and some said an alternator fixed it:|

My fix was to unplug the radio when truck is parked for extended periods. Something is drawing power from somewhere. Even a cell booster will do it. Doesn't take much draw when it's for days. Doesn't hurt to really clean and seal the terminals with something to prevent any corrosion. Look for power draws. If the alternator fails the truck won't stay running for very long at all even after a full charge due to the amount of draw these fancy new trucks have.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

your batteries are getting a little weak, and when the grid heater kicks in, the pcm does some things to make sure the truck stays running until the batteries are charged a bit or something

makes sense I did see the volts pull to under 11 yesterday when the grid heater was heating for initial start my tuner alarm is set to go off if they get really low and it went off

not sure on the alternator I'd have to look at my window sticker my winter routine is I start the truck, let it run for about 10 or 15min and then drive about 15 miles to work, all highway speeds varying from 60-70mph, I do the same thing at work b4 I come home

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Mine pops the battery saver mode in cold weather. Did it last winter and it is doing it this winter. I have a 5 LED voltmeter on the accessory port and it drops to the minimum when the grid heater kicks on. Going to try to get it in to the dealer in the next couple of weeks before it gets stuck somewhere.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Why is battery saver mode considered to be a problem? Mine does it too. Ice cold batteries in the winter take forever to accept a charge. Short driving times won't do much to replenish them. I'm kinda glad the truck conserves battery during the winter....with whatever it's doing in battery saver mode.

I think if it was normal it would be happening to everyone's trucks not just a few, my friends aren't having any issues with their CTD trucks so I just assume somethings wrong

i am getting the same message on my 2015. I just put new batteries in it thinking that was the problem. It only happens on cold mornings, i dont loose any functionality with the radio or any other electronics. i drove the truck yesterday about 45 miles. parked it for the night. started it this morning (26 degrees) and when i came out to leave message was on. we had temps of -20 degrees this winter and never had that message. i checked my DCT codes on my ultra and it showed a P0868 governor pressure sensor volts to high.... dont think they are related but who knows anymore. i guess if i get stranded somewhere i will fix whatever is broke. ever since i deleted my truck i seems to have these little things happen.

Dealer wouldn't replace them? I still haven't done anythi g about mine

Do a search on this. I think there is a reset. Something like 5 manual starts (not remote) a certain time apart. Disconnecting the battery, letting it set long, or replacing batteries might cause this. Mine would have never reset b/c I almost always use the remote.

Mines a 6 speed truck so it's never been remote started lol

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

dodge journey 2015 battery saver mode

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Moscow

The largest Le Corbusier exhibition in a quarter of a century celebrates the modernist architect’s life and his connection with the city.

Given his affinity with Moscow, it is perhaps surprising that the city had never hosted a major examination of Le Corbusier’s work until now. However, the Pushkin Museum and the Le Corbusier Fund have redressed that discrepancy with the comprehensive exhibition “Secrets of Creation: Between Art and Architecture,” which runs until November 18.

Presenting over 400 exhibits, the exhibition charts Le Corbusier’s development from the young man eagerly sketching buildings on a trip around Europe, to his later years as a prolific and influential architect.

The exhibition brings together the different facets of his talent, showing his publications, artwork and furniture design alongside photographs, models and blueprints of his buildings.

Irina Antonova, director of the Pushkin Museum, said, “It was important for us to also exhibit his art. People know Le Corbusier the architect, but what is less well know is that he was also an artist. Seeing his art and architecture together gives us an insight into his mind and his thought-processes.”

What becomes obvious to visitors of the exhibition is that Le Corbusier was a man driven by a single-minded vision of how form and lines should interact, a vision he was able to express across multiple genres.

The upper wings of the Pushkin Museum are separated by the central stairs and two long balconies. The organizers have exploited this space, allowing comparison of Le Corbusier’s different art forms. On one side there are large paintings in the Purist style he adapted from Cubism, while on the other wall there are panoramic photographs of his famous buildings.

Le Corbusier was a theorist, producing many pamphlets and manifestos which outlined his view that rigorous urban planning could make society more productive and raise the average standard of living.

It was his affinity with constructivism, and its accompanying vision of the way architecture could shape society, which drew him to visit the Soviet Union, where, as he saw it, there existed a “nation that is being organized in accordance with its new spirit.”

The exhibition’s curator Jean-Louis Cohen explains that Le Corbusier saw Moscow as “somewhere he could experiment.” Indeed, when the architect was commissioned to construct the famous Tsentrosoyuz Building, he responded by producing a plan for the entire city, based on his concept of geometric symmetry.

Falling foul of the political climate

He had misread the Soviet appetite for experimentation, and as Cohen relates in his book Le Corbusier, 1887-1965, drew stinging attacks from the likes of El Lissitsky, who called his design “a city on paper, extraneous to living nature, located in a desert through which not even a river must be allowed to pass (since a curve would contradict the style).”

Not to be deterred, Le Corbusier returned to Moscow in 1932 and entered the famous Palace of the Soviets competition, a skyscraper that was planned to be the tallest building in the world.

This time he fell foul of the changing political climate, as Stalin’s growing suspicion of the avant-garde led to the endorsement of neo-classical designs for the construction, which was ultimately never built due to the Second World War.

Situated opposite the proposed site for the Palace of the Soviets, the exhibition offers a tantalizing vision of what might have been, presenting scale models alongside Le Corbusier’s plans, and generating the feeling of an un-built masterpiece.

Despite Le Corbusier’s fluctuating fortunes in Soviet society, there was one architect who never wavered in his support . Constructivist luminary Alexander Vesnin declared that the Tsentrosoyuz building was the "the best building to arise in Moscow for over a century.”

The exhibition sheds light on their professional and personal relationship, showing sketches and letters they exchanged. In a radical break from the abstract nature of most of Le Corbusier’s art, this corner of the exhibition highlights the sometimes volatile architect’s softer side, as shown through nude sketches and classical still-life paintings he sent to Vesnin.

“He was a complex person” says Cohen. “It’s important to show his difficult elements; his connections with the USSR, with Mussolini. Now that relations between Russia and the West have improved, we can examine this. At the moment there is a new season in Le Corbusier interpretation.” To this end, the exhibition includes articles that have never previously been published in Russia, as well as Le Corbusier’s own literature.

Completing Le Corbusier’s triumphant return to Russia is a preview of a forthcoming statue, to be erected outside the Tsentrosoyuz building. Even if she couldn’t quite accept his vision of a planned city, Moscow is certainly welcoming him back.
