Discover Finland on a dog sledding trip
Our Finnish husky trips provide an unforgettable experience – a Siberian husky or Alaskan husky team gallops in front of you, the sledges crunch in the snow and around you rolls a wonderful winter landscape. Choose from a wide range of different tour options to find your ideal husky trip . Whether you prefer comfortable accommodation or staying in traditional, heated huts and tents away from cities – we have the perfect holiday in Scandinavia for you.
Anyone who has driven a husky sled once before will surely want to do it again. In winter wonderland Lapland, you will pass through some truly idyllic natural settings. Whizz through thick pine forests, frozen lakes and, with some luck, experience the enchanting natural spectacle of the Northern Lights. The sled dogs are exceedingly quick, but gentle, too. Our husky tours enable you to get to know these fascinating animals.
Travel cross country through Finland on one of our husky tours
In this part of the world there is really no better means of transport than the dog sled. When the huskies are excited, straining on the leash and the sledge is ready, the dog sled ride can start. First, however, you should learn where the brakes are, to stop the sledge during your husky tour if necessary. When you have mastered this, the huskies can start running. Your task during the trip is to steer and command the controls – the hard-working huskies will do the rest. This makes your sled dog tour in the Finnish snow a safe holiday experience. During the husky tours, you will travel for miles through the quiet, snow-capped delights that is the Scandinavian countryside. It is an almost primeval experience to cross the deep snow with the dogs – only the dull sound of the sledge runners can be heard gliding over the snow.
Find your ideal type of dog sledding tours in Finland
You can choose from a wide selection of fantastic husky tours, which take you far away from civilisation right across the country… and into Sweden and Norway, too if you like. How about a long husky weekend in Lapland , for example? With dog sledding Lapland, you can experience several highlights of the country in just four days. These include a dog sled tour, snowshoe hikes, a motor sled ride and a visit to a reindeer farm. In this most northern part of the Finnish nation, extraordinary experiences await you. On a traditional husky farm, you can observe the bouncing, cute little puppies. Then you will get all the information you need during the subsequent husky safari through the Arctic wilderness. Branch out with dog sledding Sweden or dog sledding Norway if you desire. Afterwards, you will get to know the reindeer farms up and close: feed the reindeer and catch them by lasso, then take a short ride with a reindeer sled. During this family-friendly week, you will be enchanted by the magic of the Arctic wilderness. All the highlights of the region await you. Hike with huskies and a snowmobile through the countryside and try your luck at traditional snowshoe hikes or cross-country skiing.

As part of the ‘Scandinavia Husky Tour’, incredible experiences like sitting around a campfire under polar ice, trying ice fishing and enjoying lunch in traditional kotas are offered. The husky programme will take you through the oldest Finnish forests. Our ‘Best of Lapland’ package combines the most beautiful activities in the region, while the ‘Best of Northern Lights’ husky tour offers you a chance to spot the Auroras Borealis – the magical Northern Lights. Discover the wilderness on a tour with the dog sled to Pallas Ylläs National Park, as well as the Pallas Ylläs Husky Week. The longer and more challenging Lapp expedition is suitable for those who are already experienced with dog sleds.

We essentially have three different multiday safaris and these can either be purchased as simple safaris or as all-inclusive packages with room and board either side of the tour. Our most popular package includes an additional day and night in location, so that people can enjoy other activities on offer (reindeer farm visits, skiing, snowmobiling etc).
• Our premier 5-DAY WILDERNESS MUSHING SAFARI runs through the winter from January to April and can be purhcased as a ground-only price (aka just the tour itself), or with room and board either side. In other words, it can also be purchased as either a 7-day or an 8-day package, with an additional free day in location to participate in other arctic activities.
• Our 2-DAY POLAR NIGHT SAFARI includes either a night in a wilderness cabin or a night back at the farm homestead, (sleeping in a traditional 'kota' and working with the dogs on the farm), and runs from mid December-end April. We don't have an advertised all-inclusive package price for this product, but of course room and board on either side of the safari can be arranged.
Book online here
• Our 3-DAY TAIGA TOUR (which can be purchased as a ground-only price or as a package, with room and board either side), runs primarily in April when we have additional capacity. Earlier in the season, we can only run one longer tour each week between January and March since we have too many other safari needs also at this time.
If, therefore, you are keen to participate in a 3-day tour, it is best to request a slot in April when we can generally always accommodate you or try to get a group together in advance and request a group booking.
3-day tours can be booked online either as a ground-only price or as an all-inclusive 5 day package, with room and board either side.
Can my child come too?
NB: We get asked so frequently about optimal participation ages for children that we have included a note about this here. Please see our FAQ page for other freqently asked questions.
Children participating in multiday tours who are driving their own sleighs, are charged as adults. We only include a child price for the shortest overnight tours since, although we don't recommend children sitting in a sleigh for the whole day, we are occassionally persuaded that it would suit certain children. Please note also that although we have had children as young as 9 driving their own sleighs within a family group on the longer tours, April is the best month for this (longer, warmer days, etc) and we are unlikely to take a child younger than c. 12 within a standard mixed-age adult group since it wouldn't be fair on the other clients. Again, the later in the season, the better, when kids are involved. FYI: We sometimes get a number of enquiries from small family groups at the same time. When this happens we can try to put the families with children together, so please be flexible with your dates.

10 of the best dog sled tours in Rovaniemi
So, dog sledding is on your bucket list. Where do you go? With its miles of pristine landscapes, frozen lakes and forests filled with snow-capped trees, Finland is a great choice.
And Rovaniami on the edge of the Arctic Circle is probably Finland’s top dog sled destination.
Read on for all the fascinating facts and fun of Finnish dog sledding – plus our top ten favourite tours.
Why Rovaniemi? When to go How much does it cost? Is it worth it? Is dog sledding cruel? What to expect How hard is dog sledding? What to bring with you 10 of the best tours in Rovaniemi Where to stay Other tours in Rovaniemi Dog sledding in other Finnish towns Dog sledding in other Nordic countries
Why is Rovaniemi such a good place for dog sledding?
Right on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is a great location for dog sledding.
It is close to some beautiful forests and lakes, which are frozen solid in winter and make for great dog sledding conditions.
There are several dog kennels near town. Some are smaller, more personal places but there are also larger kennels, so you can choose the type of tour you prefer.
Rovaniemi also has Finland’s best variety of winter tours and trips, so you can combine your dog sled tour with any number of other activities.
Snowmobiling, northern lights hunting and reindeer sleigh rides are all possible – just take your pick!
It’s also home to the Santa Claus village (‘official home of Santa Claus’!), so you can even combine your dog sledding with a visit to Father Christmas.
When is the best time for a husky tour in Rovaniemi?
There’s usually snow in Rovaniemi from late November to mid-April. But it needs to be thick enough for the huskies to run on, so December to March are a safer bet.
The days are shorter at the height of winter, so December is a good time if you want to combine a husky trip with seeing the northern lights.
For other daytime activities, though, you may prefer to go in March or early April when the days are longer and temperatures milder.
And you can even go dog sledding in Rovaniemi in summer and autumn, when the dogs take you out to explore the countryside on a wheeled cart.
How much does dog sledding cost in Rovaniemi?
Prices vary according to the length of the trip and what extras are included, but on average you can expect to pay around US$180 for a classic two-hour, 8km sled ride, where you can “mush” the dogs yourself.
Adding extra activities such as snowmobiling or a reindeer ride will increase the price to nearer US$240, but this still works out much cheaper than doing the two activities separately.
Is dog sledding worth it?
Gliding across the snow through a frozen landscape being pulled by a team of enthusiastic huskies is a bucket-list activity – and well worth every penny, we think!
And certainly if you do want to try it, Rovaniemi is our top choice in Finland.
Prices are a bit lower here than in other Finnish resorts, and other Nordic countries, due to the high number of kennels that offer trips. And there are plenty of other fun activities to do as well.
Is husky sledding cruel?
There is an ongoing debate about whether dog sledding is unkind to the animals.
Some people believe that dogs should not be kept in cages, harnessed up and made to run to schedule. Others feel that, provided the dogs are well cared-for, they find running exhilarating and are perfectly happy.
Obviously animal welfare conditions are the main consideration, and Finland has strong rules and regulations that dog kennels have to abide by.
So how do know whether the kennel you’ve chosen is following ethical standards?
Well, first all, they will normally tell you! Those kennels that have strict animal welfare standards usually say so on their website.
And if not, good dog handlers will be happy to tell you all about the animals welfare and habits.
Also, look at the dogs and watch how they respond to the handlers. Are they happy to see them? Do they look clean, well-fed and well-groomed?
What to expect on a sledding trip from Rovaniemi
On most trips, transport to the kennels is included, as well as expert tuition that teaches you how to drive the dogs.
Many trips include time with the dogs beforehand, so that you can get to know them and feel comfortable with them.
And some trips include a hot drink and snack at the end – “mushing” a husky sled is hungry work!
Some tours take you out for a full 10km run, while others just offer a short taster trip of 1km. Make sure you check the small print beforehand so you know what you’ve signed up for.
How hard is dog sledding?
Once you’ve had some basic tuition, driving a dog sled is pretty easy and anyone can do it without any previous experience.
The dogs are well-trained and usually do all the hard work for you!
However, it is a physical activity, and if you opt for a full 10km run out into the countryside in cold weather, you may find it tiring.
Most tours aren’t suitable for children under four, wheelchair users or those with mobility issues, pregnant women.
What to bring with you when dog sledding
Of course, most husky tours take place in the snow, so warm, waterproof clothing is a given.
Sometimes overalls are provided by the tour leader, but not always so check first when you book.
If they’re not included, you should bring your own waterproof coat, winter gloves, scarf, hat and boots.
If you’re doing a summer wagon cart trip, you probably won’t need a woolly hat or gloves, though even in summer waterproofs are a good idea!
Wearing layers that you can shed if necessary is a good idea, as dog sledding is a physical activity and you can get hot when “mushing”.
You should always bring a bottle of water too.
Here’s a list of the basics that you’ll need to bring when dog sledding:
- warm clothing (layers are a good idea)
- camera
- bottle of water
- a high-energy snack (if food isn’t included in your trip)

Children, and adults, can have a go at ice sculpting, tobogganing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and, of course, have fun on a short reindeer and husky sled ride.
Three spectacular places to stay
One of the reasons why Rovaniemi makes a good base for dog sledding is because it has a good range of accommodation to suit all budgets. Here are our top three favourite places to stay.
Sleep in a snow dome
Top choice is Santas Igloos Arctic Circle , snow domes with a glass roof, surrounded by forest right by the Arctic Circle line.
You can lie in bed and watch the northern lights, or the midnight sun, while staying warm and cosy. Some even come with their own outdoor hot tub!
Stay at the home of Father Christmas
And if you’d got kids, these wooden cabins in the Santa Claus Holiday Village are ideal.
They sleep four, come with a kitchenette and sauna – and are close to all the festive fun and magic of Father Christmas.
Chill out on the island of Vartiosaari
The comfortable Hotel Vartiosaari sits on a small island in the middle of the Kemijoki river, a short drive south of Rovaniemi.
Away from any light pollution, it’s an ideal place for aurora spotting and there’s a wood-fuelled sauna by the river. They can also organise activities including dog sledding and snowmobile trips.
Other tours in Rovaniemi
There are loads of other tours available in Rovaniemi, from ice floating to exploring an amethyst mine .
You can also ride Arctic horses , visit a frozen waterfall and take a cruise on an ice breaker ship in the Bothnian Sea.

Dog sledding is also possible in other places in Finland. Levi is the country’s largest ski resort and probably has the best choice of tours after Rovaniemi, but you can also go dog sledding in Kemi, Ivalo and Inari.

Husky Sledding Safaris in Lapland – Finland Sleigh Tours
Posted on Last updated: September 25, 2020
Taking a husky safari is an absolutely incredible experience. And I’m convinced the best place to do it is in Lapland, Finland. This magical area is situated in northern Finland and is covered in a thick layer of pure white snow.
It’s known for its rare elements of natural beauty, such as the midnight sun, and the northern lights, or Aurora Borealis.
With so many reasons to visit this breathtaking region, it’s time to explore one of the best winter activities in Lapland – taking a husky safari.

- 3 Is dog sledding cruel?

Why you should go Husky Sledding
Taking a Finland husky tour is a magical experience in every way, one that should be added to your European winter bucket list immediately.
It allows you to see a variety of different landscapes, varying from snowy forests to glassy frozen lakes.
It’s a thrilling experience that will really get the adrenaline pumping. If you get cold easily, I recommend that you opt for a shorter tour, as the longer ones do get rather chilly.
On most tours, you’ll get to visit the husky farm, and see where and how the dogs live. This too is an awesome experience, especially for dog lovers.

What you need to know about dog sledding in Finland
When you go dog sledging in Lapland, there are a few things you need to know. The first is that you don’t have to worry too much about what you’re wearing, since an arctic suit will be provided for you.
It’s best to wear clothes that you can move around in easily in case you want to keep them on underneath. There will also be a blanket provided for the guest sitting in the sled.
Taking a GoPro along for the journey is highly advised as you can capture some absolutely magical footage while making your way through the snowy forests.
Driving my husky sled in Finland
Is dog sledding cruel?
The short answer is no. I was a bit wary about this before going husky sledding, but having seen the dogs and spoken to the guys from Hetta Huskies, I’ve been reassured that it’s different from other forms of animal tourism.
These dogs love to run. And more than that, they need to run. In most cases, they’re very well looked after, you can check up on this before taking the tour.
We took a tour with Hetta Huskies and visited the dog kennels after the tour. We were highly impressed with their living conditions, and their minders were more than happy to answer questions about their training and living conditions.
Hetta Huskies also has a retirement and adoption program for its dogs. Once they’re too old to run they keep them on the husky farm so they can be with the other dogs, even if they can’t run anymore.
They even have the adoption program for those who want to adopt a husky. In other farms unfortunately they often put down the dogs when they can’t run anymore, as they are very expensive to keep.

Husky Safari tour options
As I mentioned above, we took a tour with Hetta Huskies, but even with Hetta Huskies there are many reputable husky tour companies in Lapland to choose from.
I’ve listed below some of the most amazing husky tour options, both for the location, scenery, and tour company running it.
Arctic Circle Long Trail Husky Adventure
The Arctic Circle Long Trail Husky Adventure is a two-hour experience starting in Rovaniemi, Lapland.
After meeting the Siberian huskies, you’ll mush them before hitting the snow. For one hour you’ll head out on a self-drive safari, headed up by these wonderful animals.
Speeding through the snowy forest during our husky safari in Lapland
A professional guide will be there to assist you every step of the way. So don’t be too intimidated by the fact that it’s a self-drive safari. No previous experience is required.
During the safari, you’ll take in views of the stunning Arctic Circle forests while covering between 7 and 10 kilometres of snow.
After the tour, you’ll get the opportunity to pet the huskies and take photos with your new furry friends. They’re incredibly friendly dogs who are eager to give you love.
Once you’ve said your goodbyes, enjoy comforting hot drinks at the hotel to warm up while you wait for your hotel transfer to arrive.

At the farm, you’ll get to know the dogs and listen to the farmer tell stories about them while enjoying a hot drink and biscuits. After a heartfelt conversation, you’ll hop on board the sleigh lead by a pack of beautiful huskies.
You can relax and enjoy the scenery along the way. Snow topped trees punctuate this fantasy-like region, making for some incredible photographs.
Once you’ve completed the 2km round trip, you’ll be able to spend some free time with the dogs. Be sure to take a few photos with these stunning creatures to add to your memories of Lapland.

Lapland Reindeer and Husky Safari

You’ll then head out on a short sledge safari with these wonderful creatures to experience handling them on the trail. Afterwards, you’ll travel to the husky farm to meet the dogs.
You’ll learn about these loyal animals while getting a chance to pet and play with them. You’ll then be given a safety briefing and instructions before heading out on your husky tour.
It’s a magnificent experience that allows you to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area. This tour is a great option for animal lovers as you’ll get up close and personal with two stunning species of animals.

Our experience doing a husky sledding safari in Lapland
Hetta Huskies has numerous husky farms all over Lapland, the one we did it as was in Yllas in Finland. We went to the meeting point at the Lapland Safaris office in Yllas, where we were suitted up with appropriatte arctic gear.
Once we were all dressed up in our suits, boots and mitten gloves they drove us in a tiny coach to the husky farm.
There they gave us a general briefing on how the sled works, how to brake, how to slow down, how to manage the dogs if they get tangled up and general tips.
We then split up in two people per sled, one sitting and one driving. Half way through the safari we took a little break and swapped, so that both of us got the opportunity to drive the sled.
Driving is loads of fun. The adrenaline rush and feeling of control, paired with the wind speeding past you is unlike anything I’d ever done before.
Being a passenger is also very fun, as it’s more leisurable and allows you to enjoy the scenery more.
Throughout all the safari you’ll be followed along and supported by someone in a snowmobile . They’ll go to all the main intersections before you so tha they can ensure they steer the dogs in the right direction.
Overall I loved doing a husky safari in Lapland, and it’s an experience I highly recommend to everyone. Husky sledding is a very typical activity, that allows you to experience both the natural landscape and a new rush of adrenaline.

Be sure to pack the Lapland winter essentials , it’s not a place you want to be caught unprepared. The winters can be cruel, but the stunning scenery makes it oh so worth it.
I hope you find this guide useful in planning your own husky safari adventure in Lapland. I have tried to answer all the questions I had prior to my husky sledding experience. If you have any questions, let me know in the commens below!

History of Dog Sledding in Finland
Dog Sledding has played an integral role in Finnish culture for centuries. Before cars and snowmobiles, dog sleds were a critical means of transport across the arctic circle
Very few breeds of dog are suitable for such strenuous work. Typically, you’ll find sledding dogs to be Siberian huskies, Alaskan huskies, and Alaskan malamutes.
While today, dog sledding in Finland is more of a tourism initiative rather than a local necessity, it makes little difference to the dogs.
All they know is that they are wild at heart and born to run. And boy, do they run .

Ethical Husky Safari in Lapland
Which leads me on to my next point and the all-important question… Is dog sledding ethical ?
We had our doubts about doing a Husky Safari in Lapland. We discovered that there’s a bit of a grey area as it comes down to how well looked after the dogs are.
Unlike riding an elephant , who would have endured years of mistreatment to allow you to ride them, sleddogs are born to run.
But that doesn’t mean some tour companies won’t exploit them for financial gain. This is why it’s so important to research ethical husky safaris in Lapland before taking part

How to Choose an Ethical Husky Safari in Lapland
With strict animal rights laws in place, I think you would struggle to find a dog sledding company in Lapland that isn’t ethical. But it doesn’t harm to do a few checks.
The best way to do this is to contact the company directly and ask them about their safety and dog-care standards. You may also ask them if they follow the P.R.I.D.E. principles.
Mush With Pride is an organisation of mushers (dog sled drivers) who were concerned about the care and treatment of dogs in the industry.
Together they’ve come up with various guidelines that represent a standard of care deemed fair and humane.
Any reputable kennel or tour company will be familiar with the P.R.I.D.E principles and should adhere to them.

Husky Safari in Lapland FAQs
If you still have your heart set on doing a husky tour in Lapland, the next step is booking one. This section aims to provide any info I think you might need to help with the process.
How Long is a Husky Safari?
There is no set time for a Husky Tour in Finland. Excursions can range anywhere between 1-hour to a multi-day trip.
In our experience, a half-day tour is a perfect amount of time. This way, you get plenty of time sledding, but it will also include lunch and a visit to the husky farm.
Keep in mind when booking your husky safari, that any length of time stated may include transportation, breaks and time for debriefing.
For example, a 2-hour tour may only equate to 1 hour on the sled. You can check this with the company when you book.
How Much Does a Husky Safari Cost?
Prices for a Husky Safari in Lapland will vary throughout the region; however, here is a guideline based on our experience:
- 1-3 hours : €150-200 per person
- 3-6 hours : €200-300 per person
- 6-8 hours : €300-400€ per person
- 8 hours + : €400-800 per person
Do I Need to Book in Advance?
Booking in advance is recommended, particularly during the peak months (December & January).
How Many People per Sled?
Dogsleds are limited to 2 people. The first person is the musher (driver), and the other sits in the sled and enjoys the ride. (Don’t worry; there will be a break where you can switch driver if you wanted to).
For this reason, it’s better if you can book in groups of 2, 4, 6 etc. Otherwise, you may find it’s more expensive to book as a solo rider.
Can Children Ride the Dog Sled?
So long as an adult accompanies them, Children under 14 are permitted to ride in the dog sled. They won’t be able to drive, however, only ride in the sled itself. If your child is 14 or over, they can drive the sled with your permission.
Our Experience Dog Sledding in Finland
As we arrived at the husky farm, we could hear dozens of playful howls coming from the dogs. Our guide explained that the dogs get super excited when they are anticipating to run.
We were excited to meet the dogs at this point, but first, we had to get dressed in the appropriate gear. Most companies will provide winter gear for you to wear, such as overalls, boots, and a ski mask.
Dressed and ready to go, it was time for a short safety debriefing. Although we were eager to get going at this point, it was a crucial part of the experience.
Not only did our guide talk about the driving instructions and safety aspects of the dog sledding ride, but they also went into detail about the dog’s welfare and level of care.
When the time came to start the safari, the energy was infectious; I could feel my adrenaline peak before we’d even moved.
Natalie took the driving seat, and I got in the sled. Now, all we could do was wait to be released. The way the dogs were jerking forwards, I already knew it was going to be one hell of a ride.
As soon as the chain released, our energetic pack lurched forwards, gathering speed at an alarming pace. I screamed at Natalie to break, but it didn’t seem to deter the dogs at all.
Carefully sculpted runways keep the dogs from deterring off track, but at times they had the sled entirely on its side. How we didn’t fall off, I will never know.
This is nothing like last nights reindeer safari I thought. But soon enough we relaxed into the pace of it.
It takes quite a lot of skill and confidence to drive the sled. More so than we had imagined. A couple of the dogs kept looking back at us with big grins on their faces.
We darted through majestic winter landscapes, under cover of sweeping forests and into open white plains. The dogs continued to speed ahead with no sign of tiring.
The only time they slowed was on an uphill stretch when Natalie would jump off and run behind to support them. It was surreal, exciting, and magical all at the same time. I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face.
Any concerns about the welfare of the animals had dissipated by this point. These dogs are doing what they were born to do… and that’s run .
