The Top Everglades Airboat & Swamp Tours
Getty Images
If you're planning a trip to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida , visiting Everglades National Park should be on your to-do list. The South Florida national park is known for its expansive beauty, as well as its varied population of wildlife that includes everything from bobcats to alligators.
To see all the Everglades has to offer, sign up for a guided tour. U.S. News consulted both traveler sentiment and expert opinion to identify the top Everglades tours. Before you go, make sure you read through the National Park Service's Wildlife Viewing Ethics to keep both yourself and the animals safe during your time in the park. When choosing the best Everglades tours, we avoided recommending operators that promote wildlife shows or encourage feeding or holding the animals for photo-ops.
Visitors should plan to pay a fee to enter the park, as it may not be included in the price of the tour ticket. You should also keep in mind that many of these tour operators are located at least 30 miles west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Tours that run on airboats – open-air vessels with huge fans at the back that propel the boat – can be very loud. Companies will generally offer ear protection, but if you or your companions are sensitive to loud noises, contact the tour provider to discuss options before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Like any other form of transportation, riding an airboat may come with some risks. To stay safe on your Everglades airboat tour, be sure to choose a company run by experienced, professional boaters (most of which undergo special training and are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard) and adhere to all rules set forth by your guide. Parents should keep a close eye on children and be sure they are properly fitted for their life jackets, and all passengers should protect against the heat by wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated. Commercial airboats typically do not exceed speeds of 30 to 40 mph to ensure a safe, smooth ride, and most operators will reschedule your tour in the event of lightning or other inclement weather. Tour companies will also generally provide riders with proper ear protection, as the boats are quite loud.
Typically, passengers will feel the most comfortable in lightweight, sleeveless clothing and shorts while on an Everglades airboat tour. If you are taking a wintertime tour, keep an eye on the weather – pants and long sleeves may be a better option, but you likely won't need a heavy jacket. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen and water to protect yourself from the effects of the sun; you may also want a hat to provide further shade and keep hair in place. Passengers with long hair are advised to wear it in a ponytail or bun to keep it from becoming knotted in the wind. Tourgoers may also wish to apply some bug spray prior to embarking on their adventure.
Airboat tours last about an hour, though duration will depend on the tour company.
An airboat's top speed is about 30 mph.
Not normally, but you run a small risk of getting misted with water. If you take a tour when it is raining, expect to get wet.
In winter, you'll want to time your visit for midday, when it warms up. In summer, you'll want to visit in the morning or later afternoon when it's coolest. Visiting at these times can increase your chances of seeing wildlife, but you'll likely see all kinds of critters no matter when you visit year-round.

After doing a fair amount of research, we decided to go with Jungle Erv's since it's a more popular business. The indication we got to our destination was prompted by one sign. The shop was easy to miss. It was a fairly small parking lot that led to the front entrance. The check in area is nothing to write home about. It's a simple layout surrounded by white walls. There were a couple of shelves and racks littered with memorabilia like crocodile heads. Our online price was reasonable, as it included a 50 minute airboat experience followed by some alligator petting. We took our receipt and waited by the boats. You could spot a few neighboring alligators hanging out at the property. The largest one there was called Psycho. We were then greeted by our captain, Jake. He had the perfect balance of education and humor, in addition to expert execution of maneuvering around the Everglades. It was unfortunate for our particular time slot late morning, that we did not spot any wildlife. It was still on the colder side which meant the gators were not particularly active yet. In addition to that, we were also told that the anaconda infestation had dramatically affected the local ecosystem over the years. After finishing up our fun drive, we took a short trip to Wooten's. An employee told some stories, which was followed by some petting of baby gators. We ended out experience with a tour of the sanctuary. Overall it was a well rounded experience at a decent price. This business is definitely a well oiled machine.

We had a fantastic time with Marcus on the airboat tour through the mangroves. Marcus was knowledgeable of the area and provided a good amount of information. While the lady at the front desk wasn't quite beaming with personality our Captain was friendly and amusing. I would recommend a trip through the mangroves. You also get a chance to visit Wootens to see the animal "sanctuary" and hold a gator with your airboat ride ticket. They have a nice gift shop to pick up some trinkets and t-shirts as well.
We just went with Captain Rob and had a blast. We stopped in last minute and was able to get on their last 50 minute tour. We had no idea what to expect and we all really enjoyed it. Our 8 & 10 year old were all smiles! Captain Rob taught us about the mangroves and we got to see a giant crocodile. Also loved the two-way headphones. Would recommend if this is your first time!!!!
We had a great trip today at jungle eras. Our boat captain Jake was awesome. He navigated through the mangroves entertaining us and provided a lot os background on the area, managroves and alligators. We had a great time and will be back to enjoy a trip through the mangroves again.
Jungle Erv's Airboat Tours does a really great job. Our captain, Johnny, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and really wanted us to have an excellent time, which we did. The tour was so much fun and we got to see some wildlife as well. Bonus.
So I look at the other reviews and wonder if they were at the same place!...the front desk lady had zero personality. The building and most things associated with this tour company look in disrepair. The boat guide came out a couple minutes after noon and we were back at 1248. The boat guide seemed nice enough. He cracked some jokes but zero info about what we were doing, no info unless we asked cause he was just talking about himself. There was three couples so it was $300 plus tip. Based on all the reviews I would have thought it was perfect. It was just so-so not sure worth $300 bucks for 45 minute adventure.
It was a wonderful experience! We took our daughter for her birthday and she had a blast. Definitely will be back!
This was the BEST TIME of my life ! We came down to Florida for my 30th birthday and we were trying to find things to do in the Everglades. I am more than thrilled by our experience. I did end up slicing my big toe on the boardwalk by the Big Cat's cage at Wooten's, but I forgot all about it once we were in the boat tours !!! We had a tour of the heart of the everglades, then went across the hwy to the 2nd part of Wooten's, the Buggy tour ! It's a giant buggy welded from old school busses and it can fit 30 on a beautiful tour of the mangroves and Cypress trees. We saw some Cypress that were over 300 years old !! We ended our tour day with an Airboat tour of the mangroves in Everglades City and saw few WILD ALLIGATOR !!! WE GOT very close to some on our boat and it was so relaxing and exhilarating! I am definitely going back every time I come down to Florida.
Amazing boat tour !!!! If you're in the area, definitely check out THIS tour ! Wes was our tour guide and he showed us an amazing time !
We were on a trip to Naples, FL when I realized how close we were to the Everglades. Practically all my life I've wanted to go on an airboat ride and this was a perfect opportunity to check 2 things off my list! There were a lot of reviews for different Everglade trips and I'm not sure how we ended up picking this one? I think it was the first one we saw after pulling into town. We arrived and purchased our tickets ($41.99 each) and had a little wait. A group of 3 young guys also arrived and joined our trip. The Everglades is amazing to see, definitely go if you haven't yet. The ride was fun (those things go pretty fast) and informative. We only saw a couple alligators, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Bryan was our driver and would recommend him for a trip.
Captain Marcus took us on a tour recently and we really enjoyed it. He was friendly, skilled and knowledgeable. Brought up right there and never left Everglades City. Informed us his graduating class had only ten kids; nine girls and himself. Four of the girls he was related to and two of them distantly. Says if he dated a girl she needed to be at least three trailers down. After leaving Everglades City we traveled through the Keys. What was the highlight of our trip? Marcus.
