Enjoy the ultimate Tuscan luxury travel and gourmet experience at Avignonesi Winery in Tuscany.

Start your tour from the Avignonesi winery or your hotel (optional) at 10am.

Pick your Ferrari from the following models: Ferrari California Turbo, Ferrari 458 Italia and Ferrari 458 Spider.

Enjoy a 2-hour drive (approx. 75 km/45 miles) in the Tuscan countryside including a coffee break in one of the historic towns of Montepulciano or Pienza. Return to Avignonesi winery at noon.

Enjoy a private tour of the iconic La Stella and La Tonda vineyards, the appassitoio (Vin Santo drying room), the Vinsantaia (Vin Santo ageing cellar) and the barrique corridor.

The tour will be followed by a delicious lunch prepared by the winery chefs and served on the panoramic  terrace. Lunch will be paired with paired with 5 premium Avignonesi wines including the award winning Vin Santo and Occhio di Pernice.

Please note: Deposit required for the car will be of €3500.

It is possible to keep the Ferrari with an extra rental cost.

The owner Pierluigi Giachi will welcome you and guide you through the visit of our winery and our vineyard explaining the history of the family dating back to 1720.

WINERY EXPERIENCE

For the entire duration of the lunch our Wine Sommelier will teach you all the secrets of combining wine with food by making a vertical of 10 selected wines and prestigious reserves. This is very important to understand the difference between the various grapes and the secrets of the production of a product still made in the old way.

At the end of this experience in the cellar, our driver will take you directly to your hotel with a service of maximum efficiency and professionalism.

Tuscany by Ferrari: the ultimate Italian road trip

If you’re going to do Italy, then it makes some kind of sense to do it in a Ferrari. But then you probably guessed that, didn’t you? Sure, there are many other Italian cars you could drive and plenty of other cars full stop. But you won’t be afforded the kind of respect that comes with bouncing around the country in a big red Ferrari. I once drove all the way from Shepherd’s Bush to Lake Como in an Audi A8 and tooled around Milan in a 1970s Mercedes the size of Godzilla’s wardrobe, but the reaction I got from appreciative bystanders (actually old men sitting outside cafés) a few years ago when I drove a California T (Ferrari’s old point-and-shoot model) in and out of Maranello for a weekend told me that if I were ever to drive in Italy again, it needed to be one car and one car only.

This time I chose a Ferrari Portofino, which is not only the California’s replacement, but it’s also a much better car. The Portofino is meant to be the company’s entry-level car – all £166,180 of it – and while there will be many who say a Ferrari isn’t really a Ferrari unless it costs a lot more than that, it’s impossible not to have a good time in one. It’s fast – zero to 124mph in 10.8 seconds, which is the equivalent of drinking half a dozen basso espressos – and handles like a luxed-up go-cart, by which I mean it’s nippy without being uncomfortable. It’s lighter than the California and better looking, thus generating more applause when you get lost in the centre of Florence. Which I did the minute I drove away from my hotel, The Westin Excelsior , the first place I ever stayed in Florence, in the 1980s, and having tried most of the other hotels here the one I usually come back to. I managed to guide my Portofino (my very red Portofino) into a cul-de-sac in the middle of a busy shopping area, which, had this happened anywhere in Britain, would have caused anyone who witnessed it to double over with laughter. In Florence, bystanders literally stopped to nod their appreciation; I initially thought they were applauding my rather sweaty 17-point turn, but it quickly became apparent they were simply happy to be in the car’s company.

If truth be told, the California never truly convinced as a “real” Ferrari, even if it had the desired effect of introducing the brand to a new generation of sports car enthusiasts. GQ ’s Jason Barlow was never the California’s greatest fan, but even he has been won over by the Portofino’s grace and style (as well as its engine, a reworked version of Ferrari’s award-winning 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, good for 591bhp in the Portofino and 561lb ft of torque from 3,000 to 5,250rpm). “If power’s the commodity that makes the hairs on the back of your neck tingle, torque’s the force that kicks you in your lower back region,” says Barlow. “Old-school Ferraris were all about the former, best served accompanied by the most emotive soundtrack in the business. Me, I enjoyed driving the California for the same reason I always enjoyed renting Mustangs in California in the 1990s – when you put your foot down you moved like tigers on Vaseline. But the Portofino is a much more elegant drive. I discovered this while driving from Florence to San Gimignano the next day, having had a sumptuous meal in the Villa Cora hotel , one of the most theatrical restaurants I’ve ever been to in Florence and the kind of place you should take your squeeze for your next significant anniversary. In some respects the Portofino is a town car, as it allows you to negotiate difficult turns and narrow streets without making a big fuss about it, and in others it’s very much an autostrada car, as it darts along the motorway with the kind of acceleration I’ve only previously associated with space travel.

On arriving in San Gimignano, I visited the Tenuta Torciano Winery , owned by Pierluigi Giachi, who is something of a legend in this part of the world. Visiting a winery is compulsory when driving in this part of Tuscany and Giachi’s is one of the best, as he will fly you around the area by helicopter . You will eat, drink and soar through the sky, safe in the knowledge that your Portofino is waiting for you on terra firma, purring with anticipation. That night I stayed at Hotel La Cisterna and ate at San Martino 26 , savouring a day being immersed in the world of Pierluigi, a world you’d be crazy to miss when you visit the area.

The next day, I opened the Portofino’s roof and drove all the way to Forte Dei Marmi – I stayed at the Grand Hotel Imperiale and you’d need to be a numpty to stay anywhere else – the classic must-visit destination for anyone whose idea of beachwear comes straight from the pages, digital or otherwise, of GQ . Did you say chic? The word could have been invented for Forte Dei Marmi, although as the population nearly triples in the summer, the best time to visit is towards the end of May when the restaurants are all open, the sun is high and the well-dressed crowds have yet to arrive. There are many elegant villas and cafés here, immersed in beautiful pine groves, but when it’s time to eat, you have to head to the beachfront; I ate at Gilda . The Italian beach experience might be one of regimentation, but if you eat anywhere else you’ll look as though you don’t have any friends.

I could have spent the summer driving up and down Viale Della Repubblica in my Ferrari-red Portofino, a summer spent in Wayfarers and car shoes, my silk scarf held permanently erect by an imperceptible wire, although I needed to be back at the Four Seasons in Florence before driving back to Maranello to drop the car off. Of course, I sulked all the way back to Bologna airport, but then you probably guessed that, didn’t you?
