“ Have been on numerous fishing trips over the years, Weipa Sports Fishing (WSF) never fails to deliver!!! This trip topped the lot, Lee, Wade and Dan not only put us on the fish but are great blokes and love their fishing. Went with 8 other guys of varying fishing experience and the WSF guides not only showed great knowledge, but incredible patience, to teach some guys who had never thrown a lure. After one day, they were dropping the lures on coke bottle lids and catching fish of a lifetime. Cannot complement Lee and his team enough, we will be back time and time again. Thanks guys, brilliant trip and top blokes! ” Carl "Boxhead" "Carlos" Parrilla

“ I have been fishing for years and have been lucky enough to fish some of the great spots in Australia. This has been my first time to Weipa and I am simply blown away by the sheer variety of fish on offer. What a well kept secret ! The guys at Weipa Sports Fishing were simply fantastic and brought me to many of the favourite “local” spots and some of those not well known. Lee really put the hard yards in to ensure that I caught the best fish ... ” Brian Atkins

“ I have fished and dived all over Australia and worked within the fishing tackle industry for 35 years. Additionally, I have been a general nature enthusiast all my life and I can tell you the abundance and diversity of marine life in this area is, at times, mind blowing. Massive bait balls, leaping bull sharks and manta rays, sea snakes, huge barra, threadfin, longtail tuna etc. This place just hums and the guides, Lee, Wade and Jack were all first class fishermen and instructors - the boats were safe and expertly handled. This is a great fishery and I hope to be back next year! ” Mark Umbers

“ Just had five days fishing with these awesome blokes. Lee is a true gentleman and can't do enough to put you into the fish. Jack also a fantastic fellow and can't do enough for you as well. They're a great team! Highly recommend them if you're looking for a charter out of Weipa and want to chase all the species well done again guys. Tight lines cheers chuckie. ” Charlie Camilleri

“ These guys know what they are doing. Awesome guides, awesome boats and great accommodation. Get up there cos it's well worth it. Thanks for a great trip. ” Trevor Meachem

“ Had a great week with Lee and the boys with the offshore fishing out of this world. Triple hook-ups on Tuna, monster Spanish Mackerel meter long Jew and big queenies kept us on our toes. My 5th trip to Weipa and definitely the best. Weipa Sports Fishing are very professional with great boats and fantastic guides. We will be back next year. ” Greg Whitehead

Roko Island Fishing Charters

Cape York Peninsula is a large remote peninsula located in Far North Queensland at the tip of the state of Queensland, Australia, the largest unspoiled wilderness in northern Australia and one of the last remaining wilderness areas on Earth.

Located near the tip of Cape York, we have the unique opportunity to fish three different areas:

The west coast of Cape York, the Torres Strait and the east coast of Cape York.

We fish some of the most pristine rivers, coastline, and nearby coral fringed islands.

Cape York offers anglers the opportunity to chase some of the world’s best sports fishing species including Baramundi, Mangrove Jack, Spanish Mackerel, Grey Mackerel, Mackerel-Tuna, Long Tail Tuna, Coral Trout, Queen fish, Giant Trevaly, Golden Trevaly, Fingermark, Cobia, threadfin Salmon and much more, all in one location!

Our main fishing grounds are:

The Jardine River: Pristine, fresh water flowing all year round, the Jardine River is an icon for Cape York.

Some of the species targeted are Baramundi, Mangrove Jack, Saratoga …

This area also produces great fishing at the mouth.

The Coastline of Cape York from the East to the West:

Each year the migration of bait fish brings schools of different species of pelagic such as Tuna, Trevally, Mackerel, Queen Fish, Cobia… and it all happens within only a few miles from the shore along the coastline of Cape York.

The Torres Strait Islands:

The Torres Strait is sprinkled with coral fringed islands and islets providing blue water sports fishing action and bottom fishing action. The target species includes: Giant trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Tuna, Queen fish, Coral Trout, Finger Mark, Rock Cod, Nannygai, Jewfish…

The Tip of Cape York & East Coast area:

Exposed to the relentless Trades Winds, the east coast of Cape York has some spectacular scenery to offer. Cliffs and high rock structures are the prominent features of the coastal formations providing some great blue water sport fishing action.

Barramundi Fishing, Camping Safaris and Guided Tours in Cape York with Barra Bill and the boys.  Give Bill a call on 0402 45 35 75 to book your next trip.

Cape York Barra Fishing have permits to fish and camp in several areas of Cape York . Dependent on water levels and fishing action, we can make an informed decision on which part of the cape we will fish at any given time of the year.  Check out our trip availability & pricing .

As we set up our camp right on the river, we can fish for Barramundi all day and all night right from our back doorstep.  Authentic bush camping at its best!

Our mobile fishing camp gives us flexibility and a distinct advantage. In addition, fishing inland waterways means that we are not governed by the restraints of having to fish the tide.

The environment of Cape York will also expose you to a tremendous range of wildlife, including estuarine and freshwater crocodiles, pigs, dingo, wallabies, scrub bulls, goanna, eagles, whistling kites, parrots, jabiru, brolga, and a vast abundance of bird life (including many rare species) and of course Big Barramundi!  As we fish the freshwater regions, bugs are scarce.

The flora of the region is extremely diverse and unique to this area of Cape York. For bird watchers, naturalists and keen photographers it is indeed a slice of heaven.

Fly Fishing Cape York

Red dirt roads and remote river systems, Cape York is an iconic part of Northern Australia. It is no secret that Cape York is a fishing mecca. From large T.Anak Permit to hard fighting Barramundi this is one of the most exciting places to bend a fly rod Downunder.

Cape York offers an extensive array of fly fishing terrain and it is not uncommon to encounter over twenty-five species in a weeks fishing.

Anak Permit, an endemic species of Australia is a huge draw card for the Cape York flats, along with Blue Bastards, Golden Trevally, Tuskies, and the odd large GT. The river systems are full of life – Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, and Queenfish are all regularly encountered.

  • Cape York is calling: Planning a trip to The Tip

HannahStatham

Hannah Statham

Ready to tackle one of Australia’s most remote landscapes, Cape York? Just you, a car and 1,200km of untamed, World Heritage-listed, 180 million year-old rugged rainforest beauty – aka The Tip.

Like most good adventures, this one is 90% preparation and 10% perspiration (seriously, it gets hot up here) – so you’ll want to do PhD-levels of research before you make tracks up the peninsula.

If you’re ready to head north, triple check you’re covered with this Cape York guide:

Service? What Service?

fishing trips cape york

No phone service? A view this good is better uninterrupted.

If you were planning to Insta-story your entire trip from Cairns to Cape York, we’ve got some bad news for your followers. Cape York has limited phone reception and expensive pay-per-use WiFi, that is, if you find any at all.

The only glimmer of 3G hope will be found with Telstra, so if you’re not driving in a convoy, hire a UHF radio because you can’t rely on your smartphone for much else than a camera after crossing the Daintree River.

Double Trouble[shoot]

fishing trips cape york

Load 'em up - you don't need to pack light for a trip to The Tip.

You only need to look at the vacant car bodies along the Peninsula Development Road to see the kind of spanner Cape York can throw into your planning works. Don’t join the bad luck stories, come prepared with a pair of spare tyres, extra tank of fuel and enough drinking water to stay hydrated in case you get stuck and need to wait for help.

Scare tactics aside, you don’t need to brace yourself for Cape-York-ageddon – if you do go through a set of tyres, you’ll still find mechanics to replace a set along the way.

Fuel can be few and far between

fishing trips cape york

Plan your trip to map out the best fuel stations and roadhouses along the way.

Contrary to what Cape York horror stories will tell you, there are fuel stations and roadhouses stocking both petrol and diesel along the way (in fact, the longest distance between bowsers is 140km). Major towns like Weipa will have a couple of different fuel service centres, so you can even get fussy over your ethanol of choice. That said, it’s a competitive market and prices will vary on the Peninsula, so don’t expect to call RACQ having found the cheapest fill-up in Australia.

This trip has as much variety in its road surfaces as a mixed bag of lollies, so the amount of fuel you’ll chew through differs day-to-day. It’s recommended you throw out your usual fuel-range calculator and pack some liquid ‘go’ in the boot.

You won't be eating like an astronaut

fishing trips cape york

Take a break at the Archer River Roadhouse and tuck into the best burgers in Cape York.

Food isn’t dehydrated, preserved or pickled up here so you don’t need to pack your car with enough food to outlast an apocalypse. Stock your groceries up in Weipa, Seisia and Bamaga and eat fresh produce on this road trip to the top.

What’s more, if you don’t feel like cooking, roadhouses along the way will sell takeaway food like burgers, snags and chips to sate whatever hunger pangs ail you.

Don't BYO booze

fishing trips cape york

Grab a drink at the famous Lions Den Hotel just outside of Cooktown.

Just because you like a beer after a hard day bouncing over Cape York’s corrugations, doesn’t mean you can crack the top off a tallie with gay abandon. Booze bans run across certain parts of the Cape and heavy fines apply if caught with alcohol.

Technically, you can travel with more alcohol than the limit if you can prove you’re a ‘bona fide traveller’. If you choose to go down this road, you’ll need to prove you’re not a resident in a restricted area, nor is your destination or drive route within one.

Keep it simple, pick up your grog once you’re outside the booze bans, or risk a fine.

Leave nothing but footprints and tyre tracks

fishing trips cape york

Keep The Cape beautiful and clean up after yourself when travelling through the region.

It goes without saying you must take your rubbish with you, leaving a trail of nothing but cleanliness behind your 4WD tracks. Some (but not all) campsites and roadhouses provide rubbish bins, so you don’t need to worry about becoming a rubbish tip before you make it The Tip.

There are many things you can do to ensure you are travelling consciously through this pristine environment, including only having fires in designated areas if it’s safe to do so, ensuring you are not illegally accessing private land and only camping in designated areas where you have received prior permission or made a booking for, including through Queensland Parks

The best time to go

Tip of Cape York Peninsula sign

The top of Australia.

The best time to embark on an adventure to Cape York is during the cooler months and June through to October provide ideal conditions. Try any other time of year and you might just find the roads closed and flooded in.

You can expect busier roads during school holidays – but don’t worry, you won’t find a traffic jam. Only about 60,000 visitors each year make the trip to the top.

Prepare your pets

fishing trips cape york

Pets are welcome in some parts of The Cape

We don’t recommend bringing your pet on your trip, as domestic animals are prohibited from entering National Parks, and you’ll come across over 10 of them throughout Cape York. Before you plonk the pooch in the car, consider whether you can leave them with a friend or pet-sitter. If you do bring you beloved pet, please keep them on a leash at all times to ensure the safety of native wildlife and be sure to hash out your national park exploring plan.

Be cautious about the crocs (and all other wild animals)

fishing trips cape york

Keep a safe distance from all wildlife you encounter along the way.

If a trip to the pointy end of Australia sparks an internal hype-reel of you, in khaki, wrestling a croc, it’s time to press pause. You’ll want to keep your wits about you, following all caution signs because crocs don’t just live in these waters, they hunt in em’ too. Be alert, not alarmed – even though these prehistoric creatures are hunters, chances are you won’t even see one.

Both fresh and saltwater crocs are found in the Cape’s waterways, so don’t linger on the edge of rivers and creeks, only go swimming in well-known croc-free areas, and if you do spot a croc … stay well away.

Other animals with smaller teeth are much easier to keep at bay with insect repellent.

Give your big rig a makeover before you go

fishing trips cape york

Be sure to fit your rig with the essentials to get yourself from A to B.

Having a 4WD doesn’t mean you’re set to hit the road. Adding some extra oomph to your vehicle will make your trip safer – it’s recommended to install a snorkel (particularly if driving diesel), tyre repair kit, and good suspension setup with a two-inch lift kit because up here, it doesn’t matter what you’re driving, when you’re bonnet high in the Wenlock River, it’s all about clearance.

Make sure to pack rescue equipment too – snatch straps, basic tools and rated shackles to get yourself out of any situations where you find yourself stuck.

Swap your roadside assistance to comprehensive because you won’t want to be paying by the kilometre to be towed out of this terrain either.

Dress the part

fishing trips cape york

Pack for all weather conditions, but most importantly for a dip in the water at Fruit Bat Falls.

Once your 4WD looks the part, it’s your turn. Camping attire should top your luggage list and we suggest you pack a few extra outfits. The trip to the tip is unpredictable and you’re bound to get wet and muddy at some point during the day, either from getting out to help push your own car out of a crossing or to help out someone else in a pickle.

You won’t want to forget your swimmers either, or as Queenslander’s say, “togs”, especially once you see Fruit Bat Falls’ emerald green waters.

Looking to opt for an easier route?

There are options available for drivers to take bypass roads for a smoother journey.

Whether you’re a 4WD fanatic, or a city slicker ticking off their Tropical North Queensland bucket list, there’s no shame in opting for a safer route. The Old Telegraph Track might be famous, but it’s not for everyone.

If you’re not feeling confident, it’s always preferable to take an alternative bypass route. Use a detailed Hema Map to navigate your way and find a route that matches your adrenaline level.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Cape Cod Fishing Report- April 25, 2024

The tautog bite picks up steam in Buzzards Bay, schoolie stripers move in and out of the Canal, and big largemouth bass continue to gorge on herring in the ponds.

Cape Cod Fishing Report

That sunshine feels better than good, doesn’t it? A few bluebird days this week, minimal cloud coverage, and of course, a little bit more rain. That’s true spring weather. Although, a few colder-than-usual nights by late-April standards have thrown a bit of a wrench in striped bass fishing since they arrived last week. Water temps are still pretty cold, hovering right around 47 to 48 degrees, but with a few more days of pure sunshine like today, Vineyard Sound will reach 50 degrees and more stripers will be swimming into our rivers, salt ponds and bays.

fishing trips cape york

I highly recommend trying some tautog fishing this weekend, either by shore, boat or kayak. Once the sun is up, all you need is a little bit of moving water around some submerged boulders and they should be chewing. Try 10 to 20 feet first, and go deeper from there if you don’t find them shallow. Or, try deep first, and gradually move shallower to find that sweet spot.

While more stripers are on the way and tautog season is heating up, some anglers can’t resist running to the herring-run bass ponds at night. One of the main culprits of this is OTW’s Anthony DeiCicchi, who got into a ridiculous largemouth bass bite on Sunday night with Tedy Bruschi and his son Dante. Big baits + herring schools = catching fat Larrys, which they accomplished with ease. Tedy caught his biggest Massachusetts bass, and the triad together had several fish over 4 and 5 pounds with hours of action. They got back after it on Tuesday night with a plus one—Dante’s friend, Shane Evans— in hopes of finding a repeat of Sunday’s bite. Anthony, who typically hates the full moon for largemouth fishing, was hesitant to go, but with how good the action was, they decided to hit the same pond (and a few others). Dante Bruschi saved the day and warded off the group skunk with the only bites of the night. Anthony said it still remains unclear whether the full moon shut the bite off, or if Shane Evans is just the bearer of bad luck.

My buddy Jack continues to catch big herring eaters, too. He’s been throwing jointed wakes, glide baits and soft swimbaits primarily with several fish over 3 pounds and two pushing 5 this week.

fishing trips cape york

And speaking of herring eaters, there are some in the Cape Cod Canal! From the big ditch, East End Eddie Doherty reports:

“The Herring Run has seen fish here and there since the beginning of the month, but is now producing a steady stream of herring entering the Canal. The next day I saw herring being greeted by a dozen hungry ducks that were diving for an easy meal as the fish entered the Ditch. Canal Rat Scott Ewell reported seeing a large school of good-size pogies on Tuesday. There are only schoolies so far, but the heavy flow of striper sustenance will ring the dinner bell for linesiders coming in from Buzzards Bay soon. Don’t miss Maco’s Blowout Sale this weekend, April 26-28. Jeff Hopwood says some items will be marked down as much as 50%! The latest numbers from NOAA show a 22% increase in recreational fishing gear sales and that 2.3 million US jobs are supported thru the industry according to Captain Dave Monti, exceptional angler and longtime legendary fishing columnist.”

Here’s the word from a few of our local charter captains and tackle shops:

Connor at Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay told me that two customers caught bluefish in the Canal this week. GASP. Yes, I too had a hard time believing it. But where there’s bunker, there’s bluefish (usually). Along with the huge numbers of herring in the Canal this morning, according to Bull MacKinnon, there are also a fair amount of pogies and a decent body of schoolie striped bass. Connor said they’re expecting a week or two of schoolies before slot fish show up in the ditch. Then, come the second week of May, they are hoping to see over-slot and 40-inch-class stripers. Last year, Connor reminded me, the Canal blew up with big fish on top during that second week of May. Outside of the ditch to the west, the tautog bite is really taking off, he said. There are more keepers being landed with regularity, with most fish coming in around 16 to 18 inches.

Evan at Eastman’s Sport and Tackle in Falmouth said the tog bite picked up in Buzzards Bay this week, but his buddy went out on the bay side of the Elizabeths the other day and skunked. It’s possible that they’re still a bit deeper than 25 feet or so. Evan also said he’s got out-of-towners calling the shop daily to ask if stripers are in, so expect slightly larger crowds from the summer home owners on the beaches this weekend. Right now, it’s mostly schoolies, but once the squid move in, we’ll start to see larger slot-size stripers and over, and hopefully, some bluefish.

Amy at Sports Port Bait and Tackle in Hyannis  said they’ve only heard of holdovers so far, the migratory fish haven’t quite reached them yet. One of their employees and resident fly tier, got a few bass in the back bays the other day but the fish had no lice on them. Amy mentioned she saw a few squid boats out off of Craigville Beach the other night, but when the squid come in, there are typically dozens and dozens of boats out there. She said there is tons of bait in the backwaters, including silversides, herring and lots of bunker in some of the south side bays. Christian from the shop talked to a woman earlier this week who caught a hickory shad off one of the beaches nearby. They also weighed in a 5-pound brown trout earlier this week. Bait is moving in, fishing activity is picking up in salt water, and there’s still plenty of good bass and trout to be caught in the ponds!

Captain Ross of Cape Cod Charter Guys in Bourne reported that he has been out almost daily scouting around for stripers and bait. Over the weekend he scanned the backside of the Islands and didn’t see much of any activity, but he believes it will be a matter of days until they intercept some fish coming in from the south or the west. They’re hunting around Buzzards, the Elizabeths and Vineyard Sound again this weekend for those schools of fresh migratory fish, and they have a few more dates available in the near future, so give him a call to book your spot before the stripers are here in force and they’re booked up!

Captain Kurt Freund of Fishsticks Charters on Martha’s Vineyard said:

“I am really looking forward to getting back on the water. The boat is scheduled to be launched on or about May 1. It will have new T-top canvas and cushions and new Simrad electronics. I have a couple of charters scheduled toward the end of May, but I’m planning to spend time aboard before then, learning the new electronics and fishing for squid, scup and tog. I’m also planning a trip with friends Bill and Craig to fish for winter flounder and haddock in Cape Cod Bay. Last year, I added a life raft and EPIRB to round out the safety equipment required for offshore charters. We had a good season last year fishing for fluke at Nantucket Shoals and tuna and mahi south of the Vineyard, and I’m hoping to do even more of that this year, in addition to our usual inshore trips.”

Captain Cam Faria of Cambo Charters was loading up the boat and going out for squid when I called him. He went out this past weekend for tautog in Buzzards Bay with Michael Xu and Captain Reilly Wright and they caught easy limits, releasing up to 30 or 40 fish. Cam’s got a squid charter coming up tomorrow, so we’ll have a better idea next week of what the squid numbers look like out in Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Tackle2thePeople (@tackle2thepeople)

Captain Elena Rice of Reel Deal Fishing Charters in Truro reported:

“Another week and more excellent local kettle pond action with largemouth bass fishing and also some large pickerel! In between the fun-filled family canoe trips, the Reel Deal boats are getting all cleaned up, new reels spooled up and everything ready to go for the upcoming saltwater charter fishing season which is rapidly approaching. Looking forward to seeing some activity in the early season striper hot spots soon.”

Cape cod fishing forecast.

Tautog are chewing up a storm in Buzzards Bay. In some cases they’re shallow enough to catch from shore or by kayak, but if you’ve splashed the boat, check the deeper rock piles and known hotspots like Cleveland Ledge. It’s only a matter of time until the bite picks up around the Elizabeths as water temperatures continue to climb.

The largest concentration of striped bass in our area right now is in the Cape Cod Canal, but that shouldn’t be the case for long. There’s more sunny and warm weather ahead, squid season is afoot, there are herring and bunker in the rivers and bays, and I am personally seeing more spearing with each passing night. Keep plying those local schoolie spots people. They’ll be in any day now. I caught my first fish of the 2023 season on April 24, so I’m a day late, and hoping to find the first one or two of 2024 by tonight.

Get in those last licks on the largemouth ponds. It’s going to be hard to turn away from blitzing bass and bluefish over the next couple of weeks, so get after the sweetwater action before those big bass move onto beds.

And if you’re looking for some early-season family fun, grab some nightcrawlers and bobbers and take the kids down to any little pond to entertain them with bass, bluegills and more. Or, check out the schedules of some of our local charter boats like Bad Dog Sportfishing, Helen H or Little Sister Charters to do a little winter flounder fishing up in the Bay.

Stay safe out there, respect each other, respect the fish, and fish hard. Thanks for reading!

Discovering South Africa’s treasures beyond Cape Town

fishing trips cape york

De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa. Erin Conway-Smith/The Globe and Mail

As you drive into De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa’s Western Cape region, you’ll see majestic herds of eland, one of the world’s largest antelopes. You might also catch sight of a few Cape mountain zebra, the endangered cousins of Africa’s famous striped beasts.

But while admiring the charismatic animals here, pay attention to the ungainly ostriches strolling among them. They are a curious link to some of the world’s earliest art, found in the ancient sea caves of the nearby coast.

Abstract geometric designs carved into the giant shells of ostrich eggs around 65,000 years ago are among the oldest known examples of symbolic creations by humans. Dozens of carved fragments have been found in Klipdrift Shelter, an archeological site on the reserve.

A new exhibition at this stark but stunning site calls it a land of “extreme plenty” – a prehistoric coastal paradise where an abundance of shellfish and mammals, along with a mild climate and protective caves, allowed Stone Age humans enough time for the luxury of creating patterns on the eggshells they used as water containers.

This connection to early human history is among the hidden gems of the Western Cape. Most tourists tend to fly into Cape Town and join the crowds on the city’s beaches or the Table Mountain cable car. By venturing off the beaten path, just a few hours in almost any direction from Cape Town, you can discover a host of unexpected pleasures – and often have them almost to yourself.

As South Africa celebrates the 30th anniversary of its first democratic election after its liberation from apartheid, the country is increasingly recognizing the importance of tourism, which supports nearly 10 per cent of its work force. Cape Town, the legislative capital, remains the hub, drawing record numbers of inbound passengers at its airport this year and regularly topping global lists of favourite cities, with its spectacular new museums and waterfront shops. But for a glimpse of the true South Africa, go beyond its limits.

In my 15 years as a Johannesburg-based correspondent, I’ve come to treasure road trips across the country, from mountains to desert to ocean. A vast network of wildlife parks is easily accessible, with comfortable accommodations and good facilities. Roads are not always up to Canadian standards but mostly fine, and South Africans are famously friendly.

De Hoop Nature Reserve was a farm in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its historic homestead was later declared a national monument. Handout

For our latest five-day meander through back roads and coastal hideaways, we head two hours east of Cape Town to the gorgeous town of Montagu on the edge of the Karoo desert, where we spend the first night.

Montagu is known for its nearby Boer War fort, but nowadays its excellent museum and extensive herb gardens are an entry point to the culture of the Khoisan, the Indigenous people of Southern Africa. The museum, housed in a 117-year-old former church, features displays of medicinal herbs from Indigenous remedies, handed down to generations and studied by the museum’s staff for the past three decades.

A stroll around the historic town reveals many other attractions: good restaurants, an art-deco hotel and hundreds of the African sacred ibises and egrets that roost in the trees above a town pond.

A two-hour drive to the south – past fields of grain, dotted with South Africa’s national bird, the blue crane – brought us to De Hoop. The nature reserve was a farm in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its historic homestead was later declared a national monument. Today the reserve is a successful partnership between the provincially owned CapeNature agency and several private companies that provide cottage-style accommodation, dining and leisure activities.

At low tide, guides bring visitors to rock pools, where you can see the same abundance of shellfish that allowed the early humans to flourish. Whale season is from June to December, bringing southern right whales into the bay. The land-based whale watching here is among the best in the country. For a more adventurous pursuit, you can see whether your snowboarding skills translate to the emerging sport of sandboarding on the massive sand dunes near the ocean.

Endangered birds are protected at De Hoop, making for some extraordinary birdwatching experiences. ANTON CRONE/Handout

The birdwatching is exceptional. We spotted 45 of the reserve’s 260 bird species in a two-hour walk along De Hoop’s inland lake. There are flocks of pelicans, egrets, cormorants and flamingos. De Hoop is part of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected for its thousands of endemic plant species and its unique fynbos vegetation, an exceptionally diverse type of coastal shrub.

Endangered birds are also protected here. De Hoop is home to a newly established colony of African penguins, the latest attempt to stave off the extinction of the continent’s only penguin species. There’s also a colony of Cape vultures – the last surviving in the Western Cape. Neither the penguin colony nor the Klipdrift archeological site are open to visitors, but there are guided walks to the vulture colony to see the endangered birds swooping overhead.

fishing trips cape york

Eland, one of the world’s largest antelopes. Handout

Because there are no predators in this corner of the country, you can stroll safely among the wildlife: bontebok antelopes, ostriches, otters, rock hyraxes and more. There are good hiking trails along the lake, where spectacular golden orb spiders can be spotted. The reserve is also the end point of the renowned 55-kilometre, five-day Whale Trail, one of South Africa’s most popular coastal hiking routes. (Advance bookings required.)

De Hoop employs about 200 people, providing much-needed jobs in a country of high unemployment. Most employees are local residents from lower-income communities who have been trained into skilled positions.

One of them is Dalfrenzo Laing, from the nearby town of Napier, who survived a troubled adolescence of crime and drug use. In 2008 he was laid off from his job at a petrol station and had no idea what to do. Recruited for an eight-month marine guiding course, he became De Hoop’s first guide.

Ten years ago, when I first visited De Hoop, he was our guide to the starfish and jellyfish at the tidal pools. Today he is assistant general manager for the De Hoop Collection, the company that operates the white-washed cottages and farmhouses where visitors stay, and he serves as its ambassador to the local communities. “I’ve visited many schools and I hope I’ve inspired them,” he told me. “I tell them about my journey and how nature has helped to transform me.”

After two nights at De Hoop, we drove an hour westward to the relaxing coastal town of Agulhas. The big attraction here is Cape Agulhas – the southernmost tip of Africa and the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. (Many people wrongly assume that the Cape of Good Hope is the continent’s southern tip.)

Portuguese sailors called it the Cape of Needles in the 1480s after discovering that their compass needles all pointed precisely true north from here. But the name also evokes the sharp rocks and dangerous reefs in the waters of the often-stormy cape, which have wrecked roughly 150 ships over the centuries, giving it another name: the Graveyard of Ships.

One of South Africa’s oldest lighthouses, at the southernmost point in Africa. Geoffrey York/The Globe and Mail

Agulhas National Park is now building an interpretative centre and expanded visitor facilities around the cape’s distinctive 175-year-old lighthouse – one of the oldest in the country, and still functioning. Inside is a small museum, and you can climb to a very windy viewpoint at the top.

The southern tip of Africa, a few hundred metres past the lighthouse, is marked with a monument and a giant stylized map of the continent. A few kilometres down the coast is the Meisho Maru shipwreck, the eerie rusted remains of a Japanese fishing trawler that crashed into the underwater rocks during a storm in 1982.

Another nearby attraction is the town of Struisbaai, with a sandy beach that extends for 14 kilometres (although the water is probably too cold for most swimmers). Stingrays swim into the harbour every day in search of discarded entrails from the fishing boats. The biggest and most popular has been named Parrie.

After an excellent dinner at a fish-and-chips spot and a night at an Agulhas hotel, we drove back to Cape Town, making time along the way to stop for tastings at Africa’s southernmost wineries, including Strandveld and Black Oystercatcher. The terroir for these wine estates produces distinctive sauvignon blancs because of its slow-ripening yields, small grapes and cool Atlantic Ocean winds.

An alternative coastal route back to Cape Town is slightly longer, but it allows you to visit the beguiling town of Hermanus, the country’s whale capital, with its 12-kilometre cliff walk and Whale Crier who alerts tourists with the foghorn-like blare of his kelp horn when there is a sighting.

On the coastal route of this five-day loop, an essential final stop is the town of Betty’s Bay, a former whaling station. Here, you can visit one of South Africa’s best-known colonies of African penguins, giving you a glimpse of the charming but endangered birds that De Hoop’s new colony is trying to revive. Scientists at Betty’s Bay are measuring the diet of these plucky penguins, studying ways to safeguard their future – and keep the tourists coming.

There are no direct flights to South Africa from Canada, but there are many flights from cities such as Atlanta, Newark, N.J., London, Paris and Frankfurt, with some flights going directly to Cape Town.

Car rental is easy and efficient at Cape Town airport. Driving is on the left, as in Britain. If you don’t want to self-drive, some tourism agencies allow you to hire a guide with a car.

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted but carry some South African rands for petrol-station tips, car guards and parking garages. Most ATMs accept international debit cards, but don’t get into conversation with the smooth-talking con men who sometimes hover around the cash machines.

Crime is always a concern, but it is much rarer in small towns and tourist sites, where the vibe is relaxed and friendly. Stay alert in the big cities, keep your car doors locked and windows up, and put valuables in your trunk.

At national parks, you can book comfortable chalets or huts from the excellent website of SANParks , the national parks agency: sanparks.org .

At De Hoop, a range of accommodation, from campsites to six-bed manor houses, is available as part of the De Hoop Collection: dehoopcollection.com

In Agulhas, the Agulhas Country Lodge boasts nice sea views. Rates with breakfast, based on double occupancy, start at $75 a person: agulhascountrylodge.com

4 Fantastic Fishing Trips For Kids

F or adults of a certain age, the thought of a family fishing trip might evoke memories of Andy Griffth walking along with a young Ron Howard.  Whistling as they strolled through the pines, headed off for a relaxing day on the lake just outside of quaint Mayberry, North Carolina.  In an effort to recreate this idyllic scene, you may even be tempted to pack up your family and strike out for the town in hopes of creating your own bonding time, much like Andy and Opie.

The trip would be much shorter than most Californians would assume, as the scene was actually filmed in Franklin Canyon, a man-made reservoir turned recreation area just outside of Los Angeles.  Franklin Canyon is gorgeous, and while it is well worth a visit, you’re more likely to run into the Rolling Stones shooting an album cover than you are a father/son duo from a black and white 1960s television show.

Before you rush off to create your own family fishing adventure, spend the time choosing the most important part….the destination!  We’ve put together several great locations spread around the country to help families sink their hooks into their own opening credit-worthy outing.

Park City, Utah – The Lodge at Blue Sky

There is no shortage of people who consider Utah the Promised Land, both figuratively and literally.  The rivers that formed the Martian landscape as they snaked through the desert are teeming with wading opportunities every angler will love.  Who knows, maybe the great fishing was the true reason for Brigham Young’s cross-country trek!

The Fishing

Ok, let’s get to the meat and potatoes of the trip.  The fishing.

The Lodge at Blue Sky , part of the Auberge Resorts collection, has a flawless reputation in the fishing tourism industry, and with great reason. Their partnership with a local guide service provides the local knowledge you need to land a photo-worthy target fish.  It’s no wonder fishermen from around the globe flock to their locations.  They’ve put together some great packages for families to choose from based on goals and time constraints.  All of their trip options provide the necessary gear, waders, and transportation for a successful day on the water.

Half-Day Wading Trip

There are two destination choices for a half-day wading trip. The Provo River (25-minute drive) and the Weber River (10-minute drive).  This is a great chance for a beginner fly fisherman to learn the basics of rod rigging, casting, basic knots, and fly tying, as well as the great diversity of trout species.  The whole trip takes roughly 3-4 hours, and all participants must be at least eight years of age .  Auberge also offers a full-day wading trip which travels further out to private property and includes lunch.  Offering a chance to further refine your family’s skills under the expert tutelage of your guide.

High Alpine Driftboat Trip

Families looking for a little more adventure will love this family fishing trip.  After a scenic 1 hour drive through the mountains, you will arrive at your destination.  A private reservoir tucked away in privacy.  Spend 6 hours with your guide as you target the elusive Cutthroat Trout. If ever you had the opportunity to land one, this is it.  This trip will last an entire day (6 hours) with a Max of 2 guests per boat and also has a minimum age of eight .

Heli-Fishing Trip

You came here for the ultimate fishing experience, right?  Well, here it is.  Board a private helicopter right at the Blue Sky Lodge and enjoy a scenic flight high in the Uintas Mountains.  After touching down in a remote mountain meadow, guests make the trek to isolated lakes and streams.  Here, they can try their hand in some of the least worked waters available besides experienced guides.  Before heading back, take the opportunity to enjoy a rustic lunch by the lake and let the experience sink in.  This trip lasts 4 hours and has an 8-guest max.

Is there anything cooler than a helicopter ride to go fishing? © Blue Sky Lodge

Gracies Farm

When Blue Sky first arrived, they found a beautiful landscape, excellent for artistic inspiration but ill-suited for farming.  The soil was hard-packed, over-grazed, and lacking essential nutrients.  Enter Blue Sky and their sustainable farming guru Lynsey Gammon.  A self-described ‘farmher,’ Gammon and her team of fellow farmhers have worked hard in pursuit of a successful grow operation without sacrificing their love of the soil.  You won’t see tractors pacing along straight lines for hours on end or sprayers misting fertilizer and pesticides in alternating increasing dosages.  Her all-natural approach has created an oasis of fertility and provides produce at the on-site farmers market from June-October.

Families wanting to add a little farm experience to their fishing trip can visit Gracies Farm on Tuesdays at 10:00 am. The farm offers a free 30-minute walking tour to all guests of the lodge.  This complimentary tour is an opportunity to learn more about their passion for sustainable farming.  If you don’t know the difference between a caterpillar tunnel and a high tunnel, this is a perfect introduction to a local small-scale farm.  If you’re looking to get a little more in-depth, maybe you’re a gardener yourself, then a private tour may be more your speed. Ask all the questions you’d like on a 90-minute guided tour to transform your garden back home.

Little Vaqueros Camp

All parents traveling with kids have been there.  You’re away with the family on vacation and put together a much-needed day of wine tasting or fly-fishing for the adults, but struggle to shake that feeling of guilt for leaving the kids behind.  Blue Sky has found just the solution with their Little Vaqueros Camp.

Each day of the week is themed to provide a full day of activities with a focus on engaging young minds, bodies, and senses with nature.  Counselors take kids ages 5-12 outside for adventure-based activities to learn about the local environment, history, and culture.  While the adults are enjoying their time away, the young ones are learning the basics of fishing, horse care, cooking, farming, mining, and even yoga.  Kids won’t be in a rush to leave by the end of the day.

The camp runs each day from 9:30 am to 3 pm with a provided lunch break from 11-12. Morning sessions of camp are complimentary. Afternoon sessions are an additional cost.  Full-day campers can enjoy a complimentary meal from the children’s menu.

Orlando, Florida – Lake Tohopekaliga

Yes, it is a mouthful.  The name dates back to the Seminole Indians who once lived around the lake and gave it the name.  Tohopekaliga is Seminole for “We will gather here,” but the locals refer to it simply as Lake Toho or West Lake to differentiate it from the nearby East Tohopekaliga.

Lake Toho, just outside Orlando, is considered one of the finest Bass fishing hotspots in the country, best known for the record catch set (with a five-fish limit) in the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society contest that came in at a total of a whopping 45 pounds 2 oz.

For those of you who have never fished Bass before, a 10-pound lunker is entering trophy fish territory.  The Florida Wildlife Commission performed a study of the lake that showed an average of one bass over 10 pounds for every 10 acres of lake.  With numbers like that, you begin to understand why this 23,000 Acre lake is so productive.  That’s a mind-boggling 2,300 wall-worthy bass!

Why is Lake Toho home to so many monster fish?  The lake is fairly shallow, with a maximum depth of about 13 Feet. Providing ample acreage for the grass flats that Bass shelter in during the summer months when the water temperature rises.

Freshwater fishing brings in billions of dollars each year for the state, so it is a priority for them to manage the health of the lakes.  This includes opening up the dam to allow large drawdowns in the Lake level to allow for man-made droughts to help control invasive plant species and ensure healthy algae levels.

AJ’s Orlando Bass Guide

AJ’s Orlando Bass Guides team of full-time fishing guides will ensure a successful and safe day out on the water.  How well do they know the Lake? The company is run by two fishermen, who also happen to hold the Lake records for the largest, and second-largest fish.  One of which weighed an incredible 16 lb. 10 oz!

Freshwater Tours

They offer several varying length trip options from 2.5 hrs up to a full day of 8+ hours.  They recommend the 2.5-hour trip for families traveling with kids or for those short on time.

All of their trips include the necessary gear and tackle for the conditions of the day.  A day on the Lake with the kids can be a great way to break up a hectic trip to Disney.  Just don’t be surprised when the kids rave about the fishing to the family back home and forget all about the Magic Kingdom.

Saltwater Tours

If you’re looking to head out on the ocean to cast a line, Aj’s still has you covered.  They offer 4,6 and 8 hour trips that leave at first light.  The tours head out to either Cape Canaveral or Mosquito Lagoon on the east central coast and have a maximum of 4 guests.  An added perk of Saltwater fishing in Florida is the lack of a Saltwater fishing license requirement.

Wild Willy’s Airboat Tours

Yeah, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, which is pretty cool.  Not sending communications by mail is nice, but you know what is even cooler? Airboats.  Who would’ve guessed that the guy who gave us the telephone was also capable of making something as inarguably cool as airboats?  Thanks Mr. Bell!

Picture your family loudly zipping across the shallow water, dodging marshy shorelines and alligators while looking like the coolest cats in town.  Have you ever seen someone on an airboat that wasn’t happy? No.

Wild Willy’s Airboat will guide your family around Lake Toho on one of his two Airboats depending on the group size.  One-hour smooth flying tours leave throughout the day.  Make sure to book an earlier trip if you’re worried about the midday Florida heat.  Most riders are surprised at just how smooth the ride in an airboat is. Even those prone to motion sickness are pleasantly surprised.

There is no minimum age restriction , with kids as young as three months having enjoyed the trip.  Willy himself is a nature enthusiast and enjoys pointing out the Gators, Bald Eagles, and Snail Kites that call the Lake Home.  Don’t be surprised when he stops the boat to hop in the water and bring a creature up close for the kids to get a better look.  At the conclusion of your trip, take the opportunity to check out the animals on their property, including the chance to hold their two young alligators, Thunder and Half Stripe!

I bet if you zoom in, they’re all smiling! © Richard Sagredo

Where to stay near Lake Toho

Odds are this whole area would mostly be a swamp if not for the legendary House of Mouse.  Whether you intend on popping into the park to pay respect on your trip or not, the Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge makes a great base for your trip to Florida. A short drive to both Lake Toho and a plethora of theme parks, this resort features a stockpile of family-oriented activities in a fun atmosphere.

Hakuna Matata Playground

Hakuna Matata, it’s a wonderful phrase and a wonderful playground.  Hotel stays with kids can go sideways fast.  The jumping from bed to bed and the bouncing off the walls can leave parents feeling crazed and worried about bothering the neighbors.  Having a playground on-site to take kids that are being…..well, kids, can feel like a miracle.

The Hakuna Matata playground isn’t groundbreaking. It looks much like most playgrounds.  With two separate large features sized appropriately for their age groups.  There are various activities, such as a xylophone, a maze, and some speaking tubes.  The area is thoughtfully well-shaded to reduce the heat throughout the day, and the rubber mulch provides excellent drainage after the ever-present Florida rain showers.  Much like Yoda, don’t judge this amenity by its size.

Movies Under the Stars

Each night of the week, there is an outdoor movie available for guests of the lodge.  Luckily, Disney has no shortage of movie rights, and they are able to keep a fresh inventory in circulation.  The location of the movie is shared between the Hakuna Matata playground and the Pembe Savannah overlook.  Here is a handy site for checking the movie schedule, as well as a few extra tips for making the most of the evening activities.  The movies start at 8:30, which can be pretty late for the young ones, so you may want to consider putting on the pajamas before the opening credits.

Montauk, New York – Deep Sea Fishing

We’ve looked at some dream destination fishing trips for kids, but we’ve been mostly hanging out inland.  Where can we go if we want to add a little salt to our lives? Montauk, New York, claims to hold more fishing records than any other port in the world! Is it true? I have no idea, but I do know this beautiful location is a highly productive sport fishing hotspot.

Montauk is located at the tip of Long Island and formed by the same glacial retreat that gave us Cape Cod and the Islands.  The sun, surf, and tourists should leave many West Coast travelers feeling right at home.  Let’s look at some great options for a family in Montauk.

Susie E II Charter Fishing

Capt. Burt Prince and his crew are ready to take families out on the waves to enjoy some of the finest sport fishing available.  The 48’ Susie E II is well equipped to carry up to 33 passengers out into the waters off Long Island.  Equipped for both inshore trips and long offshore days, the Susie II features the latest technology to ensure a successful day, as well as keep your family safe regardless of what the ocean throws your way.

Susie E II Sportfishing offers several fishing packages that vary with target species as well as length of day and group size.  Their rates are based on a 6 passenger group, but they can accommodate larger groups for an additional fee.  Each trip includes top notch tackle and bait, as well as the Ice to keep the catch fresh.  Speaking of catch, their crew will clean and bag the keepers as families reel them in.  They will even handle camera duty so everyone can be in the pictures and parents can focus on savoring the moment and enjoying the day.

Cod Fishing trips

Cod might be the most popular fish in the Atlantic, but chasing it is not for the weak.  Peak season for Cod runs from December – April, which can lead to some frosty days.  Cod trips are a long day on the water, with the boat leaving the dock between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. and returning 12 hours later.  Fighting Cod on light tackle is a wonderful way to spend the day, and the hearty family willing to take on the adventure are often rewarded with dozens of pounds of fresh fish to take home.

Shark Fishing

Everyone who has seen the movie Jaws knows sharks are the undeniable king of the ocean.  Their history predates trees by 100 million years and Dinosaurs by an additional hundred.  Seeing them in the wild can be a magical experience from the safety of a boat.  The powerful creatures are a favorite target species for fishermen looking for a worthy opponent.

The water off Montauk predominantly features Blue, Mako, and Thresher Sharks.  These fantastic beasts will provide families with a workout that is as hard as it is exciting.  Imagine hooking a Mako shark, able to reach speeds up to 50 mph, and battling him back to the boat as he launches himself 20’ in the air.  Or you can tango with a Thresher shark and their long powerful tail, which earned them the nickname ‘sea bull.  Some of these Threshers will leave your family working for hours to finally get the 300-pound monster on board.   If you thought that speckled trout gave you a fight, imagine one of these creatures tugging on your rod and reel!  Old tradition holds you should kiss the first fish you catch for good luck. Maybe best to skip that on this trip, though!

We’ve put together great locations around the country for families looking to sink their hooks into fantastic fishing trips for kids.

Deep Hollow Ranch

You don’t want to travel all the way to Montauk and not explore some of the scenic beaches.  What better way to travel the sandy shore than horseback?  Deep Hollow Ranch offers tours as rich in history as they are in natural beauty.

With options for the whole family, a stop at Deep Hollow will give everyone the chance to travel like a true cowboy.  Tours leave throughout the day 7 days a week, be sure to reserve early as tours can fill up fast.

The 1.5 hr option is restricted to ages eight and above .  Guides teach visitors about the history of Long Island and give them the opportunity to travel along the waves.  For families looking for a more condensed option, there is a 30-minute tour that allows children over six that is also an excellent choice for beginners.  The little members of the family need not worry about being left out.  Pony rides run for several hours in mid-day for children five and under .

Where to stay in Montauk

Montauk is a long way from the West Coast.  After all that travel you’re sure to be a little weary and in search of a haven for relaxing with the family.  The Roudtree Amagansett will check all the boxes on your list.  Peace and luxury in a warm family-friendly atmosphere.

Roundtree offers the opportunity to conveniently explore all the activities packed into the tip of Long Island.  Their ‘Signature Experiences’ service allows parents to sit back while they plan their day trips for you.  Let them put together a full day for the family with activities ranging from yoga and baking classes to tee times and massages.  They can even set parents up with a babysitting service and send them off on a tour of the area vineyards.

As part of their family-friendly atmosphere, each night, there is a campfire providing equal parts smores and songs.  During the day, their beach shack is loaded with enough sand toys to keep the kids entertained on the beach for hours on end.  The Roundtree Amagansett’s convenient location and family-friendly personality make it a great option for your Montauk fishing vacation.

McCall, Idaho – Shore Lodge

Every state is known for something. Florida has Disney, California has Hollywood, and New York has busy businessmen filling the sidewalks.  To many, Idaho is known as the land of potatoes, and it’s infamous 3-way tie for the state that most resembles a gun.  But fishermen around the country know the hidden truth about Idaho. It has hundreds of miles of deep rivers teeming with lots of fish.  Like good fishing spots around the world, spreading the word at the speed of a whisper has left many areas of Idaho largely uninterrupted.

High on the bucket list of any serious angler is the steelhead.  Often mistaken for a salmon, the steelhead is actually a member of the trout family, though much larger than most of their smaller cousins.  Anyone lucky enough to land a steelhead likely has a tale to tell.  As these powerful fish are pound for pound the hardest fighting species coming out of our freshwaters.  They use their speed to spool out a fishing line, launching themselves above the surface several times in a display that is equal parts terrifying and beautiful.

Sure, you’ve fished Spanish Mackerel off the Outer Banks and Mahi Mahi in Hawaii, but you know the key to a memorable day in a new fishing spot is a top-notch guide service.

Idaho Steelhead Guides

At some point in the timeline of their hobby, every outdoor sportsman has an entry-level existential crisis.  How can they love the land and still take joy in activities like hunting and fishing?  Over time, the outdoorsman adds techniques to their craft that ensure the species they admire can not only survive but flourish.  At Idaho Steelhead Guides , they not only strive to provide quality time for the entire family on the water but to do so ethically in a way that will preserve their waters for future generations.  Or, in wildlife conservationist Aldo Leopold’s words, “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

Idaho Steelhead guides not only boasts of their several dozen years of experience on these waters, but they are also members of the ‘Keep em’ wet,’ the ‘Leave No Trace’, and the ‘Idaho River United’ initiatives.  So you can rest assured your whole experience will be as ethical as it is bountiful.

Single Day Trips

Their single-day trip options are perfect for families interested in adding a fly fishing trip to their family vacation.  The trips begin at dawn, and kids of all ages will have a great time soaking in the beautiful scenery as they float down the river in one of the crew’s several float options.  Tackle, rods, live bait, lunch, and life jackets are all provided by the team and included in their fee.

Multi-Day Trips

These trips are perfect for the high adventure family with short attention spans looking to spend five days catching lots of fishing and making memories.  You’ll spend the majority of the trip fishing, unburdened with cooking, gear transport, ing and planning that can often bog down long family fishing trips.  Imagine waking up in a private backcountry campsite, sliding into your waders at dawn by the light of the campfire, and setting off on the private charter.

There are some Class IV rapids along the river, so you may want to wait a few years until the younger kids have a few more years under their belts.  The seasoned guides will safely navigate the rapids for you. Around mid-day, you may even see crew members leapfrog your boat off to set up the next campsite prior to your arrival.

Where to Stay in McCall

Here’s a riddle.  What has 77 guest rooms, 5,500’ of elevation, and is conveniently located just 90 minutes outside of Boise?  If you guessed the Shore Lodge , congratulations, you are correct.  Shore Lodge is located right on Payette Lake, and its 5,000 acres of deep freshwater is filled with all types of fish.  Shore is the perfect place to take the young anglers in your life to get them out on the water.

Shore Lodge offers several room options.  Families traveling with young kids may find it helpful to have direct outdoor access to let them stretch their legs without corralling them down the hallway.  The Lake Front Suites offer immediate access to the lake with a private seating area in the room and an outdoor patio just outside the door.

In the colder months, kids will enjoy a hot fire after a long day of snowshoeing or snowmobiling on nearby Brundage Mountain.  Their Fireside Suites contain a fireplace in the comfort of the living room, with a dining table and a private outdoor terrace.  The Fireside Suites are available with king or double queen bed options.

Make family memories on the water and in the room © Blue Sky Lodge.

Shore Lodge prides itself on being a 4 season destination.  They make it a point to offer year-round activities for everyone.  Whether you’re enjoying a parent’s getaway or you’ve got a gaggle of young children tagging along, they’ve got you covered.

Brundage Mountain

In the winter months, the proximity to Brundage Mountain pays off.  Here, guests can enjoy miles of snowshoeing and snowmobiling trails.  Hire a guide, and explore the snow-covered landscape or rent snowshoes to show the kids you’re still top dog.

Steelhead Guides

Come Spring, it’s the perfect time to book a kids’ fishing charter with Idaho Steelhead Guides.  If you aren’t afraid of getting wet, this is a great time of year to try on a rafting trip and learn why Idaho has earned the nickname “The Whitewater State.”  Take a trip down ‘Hell’s Canyon,’ the deepest gorge in North America.

Hot Spring, Mines and Links

Don’t think for a second that the heat of summer slows things down at Shore Lodge.  Take out one of their canoes or paddleboards and explore the lake.  Or enjoy a guided 4-wheeler tour into the remote backcountry.  Ride out to take a soak in the Burgdorf Hot Springs or explore the Kimberly Mines .  If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, why not hit the links?  As a guest of Shore Lodge you have exclusive access to Whitetail Club’s 18 hole 7,200-yard course.

Ponderosa State Park

After a summer spent outside, the cooler fall air can be the perfect time to get out into the woods and put in some miles.  Ponderosa State Park offers 1,000 acres of recreation for you to explore.  Take a hike up to Osprey Point and enjoy the perfect view of the lake.  Or, rent a mountain bike for the day and cruise the seemingly endless trails.

A family fishing trip can feel like a game of Whack-A-Mole.  Fleeting moments of blissful serenity interrupted by pleas for juice and snacks in between sibling feuds.  Proper planning, which starts with choosing the best fishing locations, can set your family up for success as you introduce the little ones to a variety of fishing sports.  Thinking about this family trip as a kids’ trip instead of just a fishing trip will ensure you won’t go wrong at any of these great destinations!
