The Complete Guide to Group Travel

The paella was a breaking point. I was in the middle of the most complicated group trip I’d ever planned—13 people, flying in from six different cities, all gathering in a seven-bedroom villa in Andalucia . We were there, ostensibly, on a joint 30th-birthday trip, a group vacation we’d been planning for years . As high school classmates, some of us had known each other for decades, and the group had grown to include significant others and even a not-yet-announced pregnancy.

It would have been an ambitious trip no matter how many people were attending. We had chosen Spain as a middle ground between North America and East Asia, where my friends and I had scattered after college graduation. We were basing ourselves in Ronda, but rented several cars and planned day trips to see the bigger cities—Seville, Granada, Cordoba. But, inevitably, the dreamy idea of bringing us together for a milestone trip took on a life of its own: destination suggestions ranged from Croatia to Marrakech , and a total of 26 people were invited at some point. And I was wrangling it all— finding a villa , planning activities, making restaurant reservations, confirming the rental cars , and generally making sure it all went smoothly. Thankfully, I had some help: a villa specialist , plus a subset of friends I could count on for strong opinions and quick decisions. I took on this role naturally—and my friends were great about checking in to see if I needed any organizational help whatsoever. But generally, it was up to me to shape the flow of the trip while accommodating every travel personality, from super-planner to totally blasé.

Like every group vacation I’ve ever been on, our Spain trip had its ups and downs. On the first night, my head spinning while trying to keep track of a group text chain that had lost all sense of reason, I found myself struggling to keep my eyes open. Even though I was seeing my friends for the first time in a while, enjoying a home-cooked, multi-course meal as we shared exciting news (A new job! An international move! That pregnancy!), all I wanted to do was lie down after a very long travel day of planes, trains, and cars. On day two, I came downstairs to a breakfast spread of eggs, cheese, meats, and bread (there’s nothing like traveling with someone who likes to wake up early and prepare breakfast), and proceeded to try and block out the morning noise—questions about what to wear, what to bring, where the chargers were—way too much before I'd had my morning caffeine.

I hung back a bit that day during the group tour, scanning the crowd to make sure all my friends were having fun. Did they like the tour guide we had booked? Were they tired and jet lagged? Was the lunch reservation at an appropriate time? That night at dinner, a random spot we found within walking distance of our villa, I was happy to let someone else take the lead in ordering for the group, since the menu was only printed in Spanish. And then, the next night, we were so excited when our paella was delivered. It was in a massive pan the size of my wingspan, and took two people to carry. The saffron-infused aroma was coming through the aluminum sheets, and we were all crowded around the stove, awaiting the big reveal—until we uncovered the aluminum and realized they hadn’t seen my note about dietary restrictions, and my friends with shellfish sensitivities would be eating leftovers instead.

At its best, travel has a way of making every daily anxiety feel absolutely insignificant. And at its worst, even the tiniest mishaps, like the wrong ingredients in the paella, feel like the end of the world. This is even more the case on group trips, when you’re dealing with people of different ages, needs, and activity levels, or traveling with a group of friends of friends, where you’re close with some and not quite as comfortable with others. When you’re trying to accommodate everyone’s travel wishes, but somehow end up pleasing nobody. And of course, that moment when you realize you’re going to need a vacation to recover from this vacation.

That’s not to say that I didn’t have a great time in Spain. When I look back, I think about the one night we picked to be our joint birthday dinner. We were all gathered around restaurant table, 13 of us trying to blow the candles out together, each dissolving into giggles at different times. And of the one day we smartly split up into smaller groups—one group exploring the town, the other hanging by the pool—and then gathered together at night to share the highlights of our day. And how our long car rides led to long conversations, which was a way for me to really get to know my friend’s significant other—something that would have been nearly impossible otherwise, as they live in Toronto and we only see them a few times a year.

It always takes a few days for me to settle into vacation mode, but this time around, I had the added stress of worrying about everything that could go wrong, when a group of people who became friends at 18 meet again to travel together a dozen years later. I needed those moments of joy, of spontaneous laughter, of lounging around in silence, to be reminded of why we were all together in the first place—and why a few years earlier, we had known that we needed to prioritize setting aside time in our schedules to find a week that worked for all of us.

I think about how, during the vacation, we fantasized about what the next reunion would look like. Would we alternate continents? Would we take a cruise? Would we bring partners and kids along for our 40th birthday trip? At one point, someone brought up making it an annual trip —but the panicked look on my face might have nipped that suggestion in the bud immediately.

Figuring out accommodations, finding the cheapest flight options, coordinating arrival times… there’s a lot that goes into planning group travel. That’s why planning a group trip needs a checklist. When lots of people are traveling together, it’s easy to lose track of the details. Whether you’re planning a trip to Greece or a girls trip to Miami , the steps are all the same!

First things first. When are you traveling? This seemingly easy first step in planning a group trip can quickly turn into a nightmare. Everyone will inevitably have something they “can’t miss” over some of the suggested dates.

4. Choose accommodations

Now for another fun part of the group trip planning checklist experience: picking a place to stay. Choosing the right accommodations can make or break a trip. When it comes to Airbnb vs. hotels , which one is right for you? Think about how much privacy your group will want, whether you want the ability to cook for yourselves, and what location you want to be in. And, of course, give everyone in the group a say after you narrow down the options by allowing them to vote on their favorites.

5. Transportation

There are a couple of points during your group trip that you’ll need to think about transportation:

• How will you get to and from the airport at your origin?
• How are you getting to and from the airport at your destination?
• What will you do to get around at your destination?

Now is the time to look at the costs of carpooling to the airport and paying for airport parking vs. taking an Uber/Lyft to the airport as a group. Once you arrive at your destination, look into options for transportation to your accommodations. Not all destinations have Uber/Lyft available so you’ll want to know what a taxi should cost (ask your hotel or Airbnb host). Frequently, you can also book a shuttle through your hotel which is great for groups.

As you’re beginning to look at activities to do on your trip, think about whether the added expenses of a rental car (rental fee, gas, parking costs) are worth the benefit of having your own transportation.

5. Plan your activities

6. Make dinner/show/event reservations

Once you have a list of possible activities to do at your destination, it’s time to get some things on the books. Narrow the items down to the ones that require reservations or advance planning and get those booked ahead of time.

7. Have a plan for splitting group expenses

9. Confirm the essentials are in order

This item is intentionally ambiguous because the “essentials” are different for everyone. Is your trip international? Make sure you look into all visa/vaccination/entry requirements. Do you have pets? Are you hiring a pet sitter or are they staying at a kennel?

Here are a few essential items to consider before a group trip:

• Arrange a pet sitter/kennel stay or make sure you understand airline rules for traveling with pets
• Look into visa requirements at your destination
• Get any necessary or suggested vaccinations before traveling to certain countries
• Think about anything that might need to be done at your home while you’re away (plant sitter, etc.)
• Are everyone’s passports up-to-date with at least 2 blank pages?
• Purchase travel insurance
• Notify your bank/credit card company of your travel plans
• Unplug electronics in your home
• Clean out anything that may spoil from your fridge
• Put a hold on your mail delivery
• Look into an international plan for your cell phone

How many people should i expect to be with.

Well, that depends. Group travel doesn’t have to be coach-party big. Choose a cheaper package from a big name and you can expect a crowd. Before deciding, it is best to check out the size of the tour on the company website. And it’s not just numbers that make the difference. Ask the company to give you a rough age demographic too; many tours cater principally to the over 50s. Will it cost less than going it alone?

Not always. Will I get any privacy? Will I have to share a room?

Privacy can be an issue. Group travel means that you will share not just the tour but almost all your mealtimes. Which kind of destinations/ experiences really lend themselves to group travel?

Some destinations – for instance, Antarctica or the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu – are only accessible if you’re booked onto a pre-arranged group tour. What if I find (some members of) the group irritating?

And there are destinations where even the most intrepid solo traveller wouldn’t wander: wildernesses such as the Chitwan National Park in Nepal or the East African Serengeti, or countries with strict laws.

Is group travel less flexible?

To an extent, you know what you’re going to get on a group trip before you reach the airport. Hotels, tours and meals are planned ahead – all you have to do is show up. While most itineraries include some free days, you might find it hard to squeeze in a small detour or a restaurant highly recommended by a friend. The solution? General Group Contract Terms and Conditions:

These details supplement, and are hereby incorporated into, your Group Contract with Delta Air Lines.  Delta reserves the right to change these terms at any time without notice; however, the terms in effect on the date you execute your Group Contract will apply.

• These Group Contract Terms and Conditions detail standard policies for group reservations; however, terms are subject to additional restrictions during peak travel periods as designated by Delta Air Lines, Inc.
• A group consists of 10 or more passengers traveling together on at least one common flight segment. In the event your group does not meet the minimum of 10 passengers, this booking will be cancelled, any deposit will be forfeited, and passengers may contact Delta about creating a new booking as individual travelers, which will be for the fare available at that time.
• Any changes requested to the Group Contract will require a renegotiation of fare and terms. Additions to your group may be at a different fare from the main group.  Individual deviations from the group itinerary may be available with additional fees and payment of any additional airfare.  A nonrefundable booking fee may also apply as specified in your Group Contract.
• You are also responsible for compliance with any applicable laws or regulations in the discussion of these fares with your customers.
• The information regarding this group is confidential between the travel agent or group leader and Delta’s Group and Specialty Sales Center.  Therefore, no information will be given to, nor changes made on behalf of, individual group members.
• Group tickets are not eligible for SkyMiles upgrades, and mileage accrual will be according to the SkyMiles program accrual policy for unpublished or opaque fares.
• All travel pursuant to this reservation shall be subject to Delta's applicable contract of carriage (and general rules tariff) and all applicable fare rules and restrictions.
• All necessary travel documentation to comply with governmental travel requirements (e.g., passports and visas) are the responsibility of the passenger. DL is not liable for any travel issues resulting from lack of proper documentation.
• Delta reserves the right to change equipment or schedules without notice.

Deviation Policies:

A deviation is defined as a change to the date, time or routing.  Any deviations may be at a different fare from the main group. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the main group must maintain group minimum requirements .  Your group may book deviations from the original group as follows:

• Prior to the group's utilization date an unlimited number of passengers may deviate from the group itinerary on either the outbound or the return at the applicable fare with no deviation fee.
• After the utilization date a maximum of 30% of the group may deviate on the outbound or return for a US$25.00 per person domestically and US$50.00 per person internationally nonrefundable deviation fee plus the applicable fare difference.
• The percentage of passengers who may deviate is based on the total number of seats held by the group at utilization date.
• Feeders (passengers wishing to travel from a different city connecting to the main group travel segment(s)) are not included in this limitation and may be done at any time prior to ticketing at the applicable fare for the new itinerary.
• A credit card is the only acceptable form of payment for deviations and is required at the time the deviation is booked.
• Passengers may make changes after ticketing at the applicable fare upon payment of the applicable ticket change or reissue fee plus any difference in fare.
• Once travel has commenced routing changes are not permitted.  Changes to the return travel date or time only will be permitted at the applicable fare with the appropriate ticket reissue fee and any difference in fare.

Utilization Policy:

In consideration for Delta's agreement to hold this seat inventory for your group, you agree to pay Delta a cancellation fee listed on your contract per seat, assessed from the deposit, if you fail to comply with the ticketing deadlines and/or if you fail to use at least the utilization percentage of the seats that we have reserved for you, as specified in your contract.

If there is no Deposit Due date, no deposit funds are due. The following policy applies only if a deposit is collected:

• If your group does not meet the minimum of 10 or individual members do not travel with the group, (a) the deposit will be forfeited and (b) passengers will be considered individual travelers and must be ticketed at the applicable fare.

If the Utilization is listed as 100%, the deposit will be refunded for ticketed passengers only.

If you fail to use at least the utilization requirement percentage of the seats that we have reserved for you, the amount of the cancellation fee will be calculated as follows:

• It is your responsibility to obtain a cancellation reference number from Delta for complete cancellations. Delta's business records will conclusively determine the time and date of any cancellation.
• Partial cancellations do not require a cancellation reference number.
• A new confirmation letter will be distributed at the time of any reductions, deviations, feeder additions or other itinerary changes.
• Until the last day to cancel/reduce without penalty:  100% of the seats may be cancelled without a cancellation fee.
• Except to the extent otherwise expressly specified in your contract, from the last day to cancel/reduce without penalty until 60 days before departure:  must maintain the minimum main group utilization requirement percentage of seats held for a full deposit refund.
• If you use some, but less than utilization requirement percentage, of the seats held, you will be charged the cancellation fee specified in your Group Contract for each seat below the utilization requirement percentage minimum.
• If  all  the seats on your reservation are cancelled after the utilization date specified in your contract, the entire deposit will be forfeited.
• 60 days or less before departure: Deposits will be refunded for ticketed passengers only within 60 days of the commencement of travel.
• Any applicable cancellation fee will be collected from the deposit on file.

Any and all matters arising out of or relating to the Group Contract and/or the subject matter hereof shall be governed by and enforced in accordance with the laws of the United States of America and, to the extent not preempted by Federal law, the laws of the State of Georgia without regard to conflict of law principles, regardless of the legal theory upon which such matter is asserted. The Group Contract, including the Ticket, Fare Rules, and Contract of Carriage as applicable, represents the entire agreement between the parties relating to transportation pursuant to this Agreement, and shall supersede all prior representations, understandings or agreements pertaining thereto, either oral or written. No other covenants, warranties, undertakings or understandings may be implied, in law or in equity. 

Delta shall not be liable for any punitive, consequential or special damages arising out of or in connection with the Group Contract, carriage or other services performed by Delta, whether or not Delta had knowledge that such damage might be incurred.  Delta shall not be liable for any damage arising out of its compliance with any laws, government regulations, orders, rules, requirements or security directives or as a result of a passenger’s failure to comply with such laws, government regulations, orders, rules, requirements or security directives or as a result of a passenger’s reliance on advice provided by Delta regarding such laws, regulations, orders, rules, requirements or security directives.  Election or failure by Delta to enforce any provision of the Group Contract shall not constitute a waiver of its rights and remedies with regard to such provision or any other provision.   No agent, servant, or representative of Delta has authority to alter, modify, or waive any provisions of the Group Contract or these Terms and Conditions.

Camino de Santiago, Spain

Solo travellers planning a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain won’t be short of company – 300,000 people completed the journey in 2017, an increase of nearly 200,000 in a decade. The Camino Francés is by far the most popular path, but the oldest route, the Camino Primitivo, is also good for lone pilgrims. The full 311km over the Cantabrian mountains is challenging, but the last 100km can be walked in a self-guided week with Camino Ways. Setting off from the walled town of Lugo, the first three days are spent following quiet Roman roads through forests and farmland. ‘Poshtel’ stay, Barcelona

Hostels have always been a great places to meet fellow travellers – and these days, staying in one doesn’t have to mean roughing it. Casa Gracia , in a modernista mansion in Barcelona, is one of the new breed of poshtels. It has lots of stylish communal areas for hanging out and making friends, including a roof terrace; regular activities such as yoga, wine tasting and cooking classes; as well as events such as comedy nights and quizzes. Solo passengers are a common sight on long-distance trains such as the Trans-Mongolian. Lots of Russian, Mongolian and Chinese people take this route alone, as do western tourists – it is perfectly safe and a good way to meet fellow travellers. Go solo, but not alone. That’s our motto. The average Intrepid Travel trip has about ten people on it – people of all ages and backgrounds from all over the world. It’s like a hostel dorm room that travels with you (minus the smell and the weird naked guy). Traveling alone can often be a) confusing and b) complicated. But with us, all you need is a good attitude – we’ll take care of the rest.

Our leaders know the areas of town to avoid after dark. They know how to haggle at markets, avoid pickpockets and scammers and generally have a good time without anything going wrong. And don’t forget, when you're a single traveler on a group tour, you’re in a group! You’ll have a bunch of new friends to watch your back (and your stuff). It’s all the flexibility and freedom of independent travel but without the risks.

Solo travel FAQs

Will i have my own room.

It’s completely up to you. On our trips rooming is organized on a twin-share basis and we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our  customer service team  when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries, some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances, it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and traveling.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that, there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the travel style - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

Do I have to pay for an individual room?

Not if you don’t want to. If you’re happy to bunk with a traveler of the same gender, paired up as per the gender marker on each of their passports, there’s nothing extra to pay on the vast majority of our trips. If you want your own room, just mention it to our customer service team when booking and they can organize an individual room for a small charge.

I'm new to group travel, what will my group be like?

Intrepid travelers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and a lot of them elect to travel alone (so no third-wheeling, we promise). Our trips attract a mix of genders and ages generally ranging from 25 to 65. It’s hard to know exactly who you’ll meet, but you can be assured you'll be a part of the fun.

Is it cheaper to travel in a group?

On average, solo travel on a group tour is way more cost-effective than heading out on your own as you're splitting the costs. We can also guarantee a lot more inclusions and extras than you’d usually get for your money.

Can I tailor the trip to me?

We have a range of trip styles – Basix, Original, Comfort and Premium – that offer different levels of flexibility and free time. Lots of our travelers choose to travel on their own, so it’s common for people to want different things from their experience. Be sure to chat with your leader ; they can recommend places to explore during your free time or things to try after the trip has finished. 

Tips for solo travelers

Embrace local 

It pays to learn a little bit of the local language wherever you go and you should always consider the country’s dress code when picking out what to wear. In many places, you maybe be expected to dress modestly and cover up exposed skin so consider packing a sarong or light scarf to cover exposed shoulders, along with a long skirt or trousers. Whether you agree with it or not, it’s respectful (and smart) to follow the local style.

When you’re out and about being all adventure-y, just keep an eye on the sunset. Try to avoid catching public transport after dark when you’re on your own, especially if you’re carrying your suitcase/backpack/fancy camera/map (it kind of screams ‘tourist’). Travelling with a  group  is a smart move for any traveller; it’s always good to have people around who’ve got your back.

Social media may be the doom of mankind and rational thought as we know it, but it can be useful, even as a safety tool. Your friends and family are now privy to a minute-by-minute update of your whereabouts, regardless of where you are in the world. Before you leave home, give your friends/family a social media heads-up: ‘If I don’t post a sunset selfie for five days straight, get in touch and see if I’m okay.’

Share your itinerary.

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people traveling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport, and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are. 

Remember the little things

If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're traveling with us, we can help you organize an  arrival transfer.  Read your maps  before  you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewelry, wedding rings, and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress as the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.

Roam if you want to

Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email, and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost-effective. 

Fare's fair

Solo travelers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate  before  you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.

Stick together

It’s one of the advantages of traveling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small  Intrepid group  of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a  day tour  to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life. 

Trust your instincts

Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

Unlike many tour operators, we don’t believe in charging solo travellers a premium, so if you are happy to share a room with a fellow traveller of the same sex, you will pay exactly the same as a couple. Occasionally you may even end up with your own room. You can travel as a single traveller on any of our holidays, from our escorted tours to our walking holiday.

faqs for Solo travellers

When i travel solo, do i have to pay more.

There is no additional cost for single travellers on our tours if you share a room with another traveller of the same sex, with whom we can pair you up. If you would prefer your own room, then you will need to pay a single supplement, which varies depending on the tour.

Is there free time on a Wild Frontiers tour?

The majority of our tours include some free time built in. You can see how much free time is included by looking at the day-to-day itinerary but as a general rule we include almost all meals meaning that solo travellers will always have company when dining. 

How big are group sizes on Wild Frontiers tours?

The average Wild Frontiers group size on our solo holidays is between 9 and 12 clients. In our experience this is a perfect size, as the group is not too intimidating to locals, and it allows for those unplanned moments, like being invited into someone’s home for tea, or to share a picnic. It also means there are plenty of interesting, like-minded people to talk to over dinner. It is not unusual for more than half of the people in each group to be travelling solo. 

How does the rooming work on a solo traveller holiday?

In our tour price, unless otherwise stated you are guaranteed a bed in a twin room, which you will share with another person in your group of the same sex. However you can choose to pay a single supplement if you prefer a room of your own. This option is available on most of our tours and is usually available for all nights. If there are any nights of the tour where we cannot offer a single supplement (usually due to a limited number of rooms being available), this will be clearly detailed in the ‘Travelling Solo and Single Supplements’ section. The single supplement cost varies from trip to trip. 

Can I travel solo even if I’m not single?

There are many reasons why people travel solo with us and it’s absolutely not just because they're single. Regardless of whether your partner is able to travel with you or not, you are still in good company. 

As a female travelling solo, will I be safe on this trip?

Yes, the safety of our customers is our number one priority. Travelling with a group is a reassuring sure way to stay safe and you will have a tour-leader with you throughout who will look out for the whole group. The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

All of our group tours are suitable for single travelers, no matter your age. In fact, with around 60% of our customers traveling solo on our tours, you're likely to have other solos in your group, so you'll instantly have something in common.  The average group size on our solo trips is just 11, so you'll have the opportunity to meet new friends looking for the same experiences as you are, but not too many to disrupt your trip. First time traveling alone on a group holiday? We've answered the top questions about traveling alone on an Explore tour:

No, there is no extra cost for traveling by yourself on our tours if you’re happy to share with another traveler. If you prefer a room of your own, there’ll be a single room supplement to pay. How much this is depends on the trip.

Yes, we build free time into our itineraries on the majority of our trips. Check the itinerary on the trip page where we detail the plan for each day, including available free time.

Our typical small group is 11 people, plus an Explore leader. Big enough to meet likeminded people, but small enough to get close to the destination you’re visiting. The exact size varies according to the type of trip, the transport and accommodation used and activities included. We rarely have groups that are smaller than five or six people or larger than 16. Usually around half of the travelers in each group are traveling solo.

Included in our trip price is a bed in a twin room, which you would share with another person in your group of the same sex. If you prefer a room of your own, you can choose to pay for our single room option (single supplement). This is available on most of our trips but may not apply to all nights - check the trip itinerary, where we state which nights have single room options. The single supplement cost varies according to the trip – see the trip pages for pricing.

Typically, we leave the evenings free on our tours, so you can enjoy free time to do whatever you choose. Your tour leader will be on hand to recommend local restaurants and things to do, and can organise bookings for you. It's up to you whether you eat with your whole group, in smaller groups or on your own. Some trips have evening activities, for example a meal with locals in a home stay or a sunset boat ride, but often these are optional. Check the trip page for a day-to-day breakdown of included meals and activities.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “​​we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.” 

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that in Chicago, eight hotels earned at least One Key. Of those, half make their home in the kinds of historic buildings that give this city its well-earned reputation as one of the most architecturally distinguished cities in the country. Follow Michigan Avenue north from the heart of the Loop to the Gold Coast and you’ll pass within two blocks of all but one of them. The Chicago Athletic Association sits within a Venetian Gothic landmark. The Gwen makes its home in a storied 1929 Art Deco skyscraper. The Pendry sets up shop in the masterpiece that is the 1929 Art Deco Carbide & Carbon Building. And the lower floors of the Viceroy make use of the meticulously-preserved, 1920s-vintage Cedar Hotel. There are Key hotels too in newer builds, among them the Peninsula (with uniformed bellboys and staffers who seem to know the name of each individual guest) and the Waldorf Astoria , its lobby a marble marvel. Minnesota travel agent under fire again for cancelled trips, customers stranded

A Minnesota travel agent left about 71 travelers stranded with no accommodations in Costa Rica. In March, the same travel agent left some Minnesotans stranded in Florida after cruise booking issues. FOX 9's Karen Scullin has the latest.

(FOX 9) - The stories about Minnesota travel agent Monica Faulkner just keep piling up.

First, a group of cruise passengers say they were left stranded at the dock in March after she apparently didn’t book the trip for them, even though they had paid.

Now, there is chaos in Costa Rica after her travel group lands in the country with no place to stay, and an Aruba group of travelers just found out their Mother’s Day trip was suddenly canceled.

This past Saturday, Minnesota travel agent Monica Faulkner took a group of about 71 travelers to Costa Rica.

Even though the group paid in full, the travel agent apparently hadn’t put their money down on accommodations. At some point, Faulkner had called a liaison in Costa Rica at the last minute to find property owners who would take her group to various condos, AirBnB’s and other places.

A Costa Rica property owner told FOX 9 the whole thing was so odd, but she figured the hotel must have been overbooked, so she was happy to help. But she noticed Faulkner was kind of avoiding the group she brought with her.

"She [Faulkner] was like ‘don’t say anything to these people," Costa Rica property owner Jennfier Little said.

Then Faulkner signed a lease with Little and handed over her passport as collateral with a promise to pay for two nights in two days, which would be on Monday. They set up a meeting spot, but Faulkner didn’t show up.

"We heard she might have been abducted, then we heard she was at the hospital, then we heard all this stuff," Little said.

Little even went to the luxury condo she had booked for her and her family and knocked on the door. Faulkner wasn’t there, and she had the door slammed in her face, she said.

On Wednesday, the property owners were told to meet Faulkner again for payment when Little said Faulkner demanded her passport back. Little and her husband refused, but Faulkner grabbed it anyway.

Little recorded video of Monica on the phone, supposedly trying to send her the money owed.

"PayPal, Zelle, Venmo, none of that was going through," Little said. "Then other people she owes money, $3,051 – they sent her an invoice on PayPal, and that’s when she started acting like she was going to pass out."

Meanwhile, the travelers who were put into the last minute accommodation were kicked out because Faulkner had not paid the property owners. Some of them flew home, while others paid extra to stay.

But it wasn’t just Costa Rica. FOX 9 was told by other travelers set to vacation in Aruba that their trip was suddenly canceled two weeks before they were set to leave.

After receiving no confirmation or room numbers from Faulkner, the travelers called the hotel they had reservations at to find out more, and found out they were never booked. The travelers allegedly paid Faulkner at least $2,500 each for a room.

"I gave him [the hotel] the name of everybody in my party, and they said no one has a room under their name. I’m like that’s crazy because we gave this lady a total of $5,600," said Antionette Steele.

On Sunday, Faulkner called some of the Aruba traveling party saying the trip was canceled, while others just stopped getting communications all together. Another woman who was set to go on the Aruba trip, Renee Pepper, said Faulkner’s number was going straight to voicemail and she wasn’t responding to Facebook messages.

Little received all but $125 returned, she believes because she had her sign a lease.

Others in Costa Rica were more trusting and are currently out well over $10,000. They tried to file court papers to stop Faulkner from leaving the country, but she reportedly left on Thursday.

No one on the Aruba trip has yet to receive any money back.
