Formed in 2012, Greta Van Fleet is an American rock band that draws on a blend of hard rock, blues, classic rock, and progressive rock sounds. It is often compared to Led Zeppelin, with lead singer Josh Kiszka howling out tunes in a unique voice similar to Robert Plant.

Along with classic and hard rock influences, the band has a deep love for blues music, which can be heard in its music styling. Other influences for the band include The Doors, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and James Jamerson.

Originally from Frankenmuth, Michigan, US, Greta Van Fleet has four band members, three of whom are brothers: vocalist Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka, and bassist/keyboardist Sam Kiszka. The drummer, Danny Wagner, was a later addition to the band, replacing the original band member Kyle Hauck who left in 2013.

For years, Greta Van Fleet played locally, building up a loyal fan base in its hometown area before signing to Lava Records in 2017. Within a month of being signed, the band released its first studio EP, Black Smoke Rising. For four weeks in a row, its hit single from the album, “Highway Tune,” topped the US Billboard Mainstream Rock and Active Rock charts.

After its initial release, Greta Van Fleet went on to release a second studio EP album, From the Fires, in the fall of 2017. This album would go on to be nominated for and to win the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

With the band’s initial success fueling it forward, the band released a full-length studio album in 2018 titled Anthem of the Peaceful Army. Immediately topping the rock charts, this album continued to earn Greta Van Fleet national recognition as an up-and-coming rock band. Top hits from the album include “When the Curtain Falls,” “You're the One,” and “Lover, Leaver.”

In 2021, Greta Van Fleet released its most recent full-length studio album, The Battle at Garden's Gate. This album reflects the band's own journey through the years. Wagner stated that being on tour led the members to grow up and see the world differently than when they first began. With the release of this album, Greta Van Fleet went on tour once again.

Greta Van Fleet’s live shows are known for stunning performances with quality vocals and sound. In addition to its strong on-stage presence, the band became iconic for its unique ’70s-inspired fashion style and being barefoot throughout its shows. During performances, the band delivers captivating guitar solos, including powerful bass solos by Sam Kiszka, as well as electric vocal performances by lead singer Josh Kiszka. With high energy, rhythmic tunes, and a compelling atmosphere, Greta Van Fleet tours are something to be experienced first-hand.

After selling out its spring Dreams in Gold 2022 Tour shows, including selling 100,000 tickets in a mere two days, Greta Van Fleet immediately scheduled additional arena tour dates for late 2022 and into early 2023. These shows include not only numerous stops throughout the US, but also a stop in India and numerous shows in Europe.

Live reviews

Tiny venue, great beer & a loud band playing classic rock at very close quarters...what could possibly go wrong?

The middle-aged northern Planet Rock contingent at the front certainly enjoyed themselves, especially as one of the gang spotted a certain Don Airey of Deep Purple in the crowd - you could hardly miss him in such a small venue.

Midway through the set Josh let it be known it was hot on stage, so your truly duly supplied the band with a beer each, which Jake duly used to play slide. Woo-hoo!

The band played a well received 45 minute set & the crowd went home happy. Those of us that hung around got to chat with Don Airey & the boys from Greta Van Fleet who duly signed the free posters on offer.

Josh agreed after the show that drinking my beer meant they were obliged to play Liverpool as soon as possible. Here's hoping...

The boys need to write some more songs and play a longer set, but apart from that they do exactly what it says on the tin - old school classic rock - and they do it very well indeed.

My hearing still hasn't recovered...just like 'back in the day' :-)

Band was great but terrible sound mix made it unlistenable. Kick drum, bass guitar mixed much to loud, drowned out Josh's vocals and Jake's lead guitar. Venue was tough for sound but bad mix did not help. I've heard good sound in similar venues; in 2018 there is no excuse for this. When will sound "engineers" learn to get it right? More and more bass is not better! The BMO center is a big concrete box - low frequency SPL is uniform throughout whole venue - but mid and high frequencies fall off rapidly as you move from speakers - result is that from anywhere but directly in front of the speaker you only hear the kick drum and bass, and with the hard walls echoes muddied them all together as well. BTW, I was standing next to the mixing console! How could the sound "engineer" have thought that this was good sound?

We left early, it was too painful to listen too. I've been to over 100 concerts, in all types of venues, the sound mix for GVF was one of the worst I've endured. Bitterly disappointed!

15 Nov 2018 Manchester Academy. 3 stars.

Glad I've seen them, but as others have mentioned for other shows the sound mix did not seem to do them justice.

Liked the high energy and Bonham style drums.

I'm no expert but I have been to a lot of gigs and this was typical of the type where the vocals (which is crucial to GVF sound) gets drowned out by a loud muddy mix. Shame because I love their properly mixed albums. 5 stars.

Overly long guitar solos don't do it for me and multiple false endings to some songs possibly didn't help.

Enjoyable but not as good as I'd expected.

Saw Greta Van Fleet on 1st April at St Luke’s in Glasgow

Never been to that venue before. It was brilliant. GVF were amazing. My only criticism would be that frontman Josh microphone needed turned up which did happen after the crowd shouted to the sound guy. I would love to see GVF again. Great energy from all members.

The support band Second Sons were also very good again full of energy great performers. The frontman had a bit of early Mick Jagger about him

Great sow from start to finish. Would highly recommend

Absolutely dire performance, I was extremely disappointed. In all the years I’ve been attending rock gigs this was the worst, and the first time I’ve ever walked out before the end, although I certainly wasn’t alone. Several people went out at the same time as me - halfway through the fifth song, all saying the same thing. It was terrible. After the hype from Planet Rock, yes you Wyatt, I was really looking forward to this but what a let down.

This was my first concert and I can say that it will probably never be beaten. They have such a confidence on stage which is so impressive for their age. They bring back a classic rock sound and attitude and it is astounding to watch them work. I was blown away by every single song, each one bringing its unique sound and energy. I 100% recommend these guys to anyone who calls themselves a rock fan or anyone who enjoys good, kick-ass music.

Very well attended, sold out in fact. Great band and support from Goodbye June, also well worth seeing.

Apart from the set lasting only one hour with a two song encore, it was a great show, sadly reviewed by a Guardian writer who obviously knows nothing of this music and should never be allowed out alone. I think the audience attendance justifies this comment.....

Good musicianship and showmanship from a developing band.

Great show in Orlando last night.

They sounded as good in concert as they do recorded. This is my 16 yr old sons favorite band, and Iv been recruited. Seen 100s of Rock concerts over the last 35 years, but Iv never heard anything like this lead singers voice. The band doesnt like the comparison to Led Zepplin, but it strikes you immediately in the best way. If you are a Rock fan, do yourself a favor & go see Greta Van Fleet.

Awesome! These days when listening to music you wonder to yourself “man.. do they actually sound like that in real life? Can they actually hit that note or is that all auto tuned? Well let me tell you.. Josh does NOT need auto tune holy cow he can hit those notes perfectly mama!! Josh is also a bloody demon on guitar I was just star struck with his playing and Sam damn.. just watch those fingers go.

I had the opportunity to see GVF open for the Struts in 2017 before seeing them headline their 2nd sold out show in DC. Their music is outstanding, and it was so impressive to see the musical talents displayed on stage! The crowd interaction on the part of Josh was lacking, unfortunately. I look forward to seeing where this band goes over the next 20 years...they are amazing!

The run, which has been dubbed the "Dreams in Gold Tour," is a big look for the still-rising young rockers, who found quick success on the strength of their  Black Smoke Rising EP, which was released in 2017 and contained the huge hit "Highway Tune."
