Incredible week of skiing.

Halsbury took care of us from the moment we booked our ski trip. With knowledgeable staff in the UK and experienced reps in resort we were able to thoroughly enjoy our week in Italy. We enjoyed incredible snow in Marilleva, with our group skiing across to Folgarida with amazing instructors. Jo, our in resort rep was a blessing. She helped us organise all the minor details and became part of the group. The students loved having her around. We enjoyed a great bumboarding session, ice skating evening, in house quiz and fab pizzas at a local restaurant.

Hi Denise, Thank you for writing this very kind review. It’s wonderful to hear that the support of our team both prior to departure and in resort helped to make it such a successful trip. We’ll be sure to pass on your feedback to your rep, Jo, and the rest of the team. We’re really pleased to hear that the après ski activities including bombarding, ice skating and pizza night were a hit. Thank you for choosing Halsbury. We hope to see you on the slopes again soon! – Kylie

5 stars and more! Best in the business!

If you are considering booking a music tour with Halsbury - please look no further!! I lead a variety of music groups including choirs, and couldn't recommend them highly enough. They are extremely experienced and can suggest ideal locations and itineraries. Throughout the process they communicate efficiently, provide a fantastic level of support and expertise, find wonderful concert venues and hotels, and have always delivered above expectations. We have toured to Bruge, Barcelona/Girona, Venice/Verona, Liverpool/Chester and look forward to Tuscany this summer - all with Halsbury! With special thanks to Alison and Sarah who are an incredible team and so friendly and efficient.

Thank you for choosing Halsbury again and we’ll see you in Tuscany! – Anna

Fab few days with the Halsbury guys

Fab few days with the Halsbury guys. Brilliant skiing and lovely service. Great experience from the get go and nothing was too much trouble. They had a great understanding of the resort and everything available within. Nice choice of hotel with high quality food and rooms. Great fun from start to finish, really looking to our school trip in January. Thank you!

Date of experience : 03 April 2024

Knowledgable staff who go the extra mile to make your holiday work

This was the first time I had been a party leader for a school ski trip and I was nervous as I was taking 30 Prep children (aged 8 - 12). Halsbury are very knowledgable of all the resorts they use and listened carefully to my requirements and found me the perfect resort - it was safe and quiet and ideal for small children. The walk to the gondola and ski school was only metres which meant no stressful walking with skis and poles for little ones. The hotel was incredibly comfy and friendly and nothing was too much for them (birthday cakes, Easter eggs etc). Halsbury offer a free inspection trip for party Leaders which I went on last Easter. This is a real perk for teachers (we don’t get many perks!) and a great way to get to know some of the Halsbury team, get to explore an area of Italy and chat through concerns with other party leaders. I loved every minute of it, especially the 4 days of skiing!

Date of experience : 31 March 2024

Hi Helen, Thank you for sharing such a wonderful review! We're delighted that everything went smoothly and that the resort, the hotel and the amenities were such a great fit for your requirements. We appreciate what a responsibility it is to take 30 children away on a ski trip, especially for the first time. We’re really pleased to hear you felt supported and that we went the extra mile to ensure you had the best possible experience. Listening to your requirements and finding the most suitable resort is a really important part of our service. We’re so pleased that the safe and quiet resort environment and the proximity of the hotel to the gondola and ski school made it stress-free for you and the children. We’re really glad that you took advantage of the free inspection trip for teachers. As you say, it’s a great opportunity to connect with other party leaders, and talk through any concerns you may have (and enjoy a bit of skiing of course) ahead of your school trip. Thank you for choosing Halsbury. We hope to see you on the slopes again soon! - Kylie

First class ski inspection visit.

A very well organised ski inspection visit to Claviere for our future school ski trip at Easter 2025. Halsbury staff were fantastic; accommodating, informative and friendly. Accommodation, food and hospitality was excellent. Ski guiding for 3 days was first class in 3 different ski areas; Claviere, San Sicario/Saux'dOux and Sestriere. Everything was very well-organised and thought out. A professional, quality company and experience. Thank you!

Hi Harry, Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! It’s great to hear that you had a fantastic few days with the Halsbury team on our recent inspection visit. It’s wonderful to hear that you were happy with the choice of the hotel, the quality of the food and that you felt well taken care of throughout the trip. And, we’re really pleased you enjoyed the ski guiding across the three different ski areas. Inspection visits are a great opportunity to connect with other party leaders, and talk through any concerns you may have (and enjoy a bit of skiing of course) ahead of your school trip. We’re really pleased you were able to join us. We hope to see you out in resort again soon. – Ella

New York City - performing arts trip

Halsbury organised a trip to New York City for us, centred around the Performing Arts. From the early stages of organising the trip and up until we returned home, the communication was concise, helpful, and patient. It was a wonderful trip. When we asked the students individually what their highlights were, they all said: "Everything!". Many thanks to Beckie and Tom for their diligent planning, insight, and genuine care.

Date of experience : 15 February 2024

Thank you so much for writing this review and for sharing your experience with us on your recent trip to New York. We’re thrilled to hear that our efforts to maintain clear, helpful, and patient communication throughout the planning process contributed to the overall success of your trip. Hearing that your students found every aspect of the trip memorable is the highest praise we could hope for! Beckie and Tom will be delighted to hear your feedback. Once again, thank you for choosing Halsbury and we look forward to the opportunity to assist you with future adventures! - Kylie

The Independent School's Ski Championships 2024

What a fantastic experience for our students. The ISSC organised by Halsbury Travel was well organised with extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. The instructors were brilliant, hotel right on the slopes! Just an amazing week! Many thanks to the Halsbury team. Rob Holt - Felsted

Date of experience : 15 December 2023

Hi Rob, thank you so much for your fantastic review of your experience at the recent ISSC ski racing event in Sestriere! We’re delighted to hear that your students had such a positive and memorable time. It's wonderful to hear that you found our event to be well-organised, and we appreciate your kind words about our friendly and knowledgeable staff. Our team works diligently to create a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone involved, and we're thrilled that it reflected in your feedback. We're really pleased that the instructors made a positive impact, and that the hotel's location on the slopes added to the overall experience. Thank you once again for your kind words. Your feedback is incredibly valuable to us. We look forward to welcoming you to ISSC 2024! - Anna

Inexcusable to be honest

Inexcusable to be honest ! Twenty minutes before the coach leaves to ski in Italy , the school is notified that there are no coaches and the trip is cancelled. Unprofessional doesn't go anywhere near enough to describe this. What on earth is going on at Halsbury ? Does no one think to check things until Departure Day !! The poor kids ( mine included) and teachers are devastated.

Date of experience : 31 March 2023

Dear Natasha, We’re really sorry for letting down the school at such short notice. We tried every avenue available to avoid cancelling the tour. We're really disappointed we weren't able to find a solution. As outlined in our letter to the school, we will be offering a full refund plus additional compensation to be shared among the families affected, to cover any expenses and in recognition of the distress this has caused. We understand that this doesn’t make up for the disappointment. However, we hope it goes some way in recognising the upset this has caused. Sincere apologies and best regards, Katie

worst travel company for school trip

Appaling customer service. so many unanswered emails. Still waiting for final itinerary. However for payments, they were emailing us and checking that payments were made. On eof their customer agent was rude and talked to me like I was an idiot. Received an email from another agent telling me that I didn't feel paperwork and needed to answer ASAP, howver I never saw these before so how am I meant to fill them in. Don't answer messages at all. Avoid this company at all cost

Date of experience : 26 June 2023

We’re really disappointed to hear that we haven’t met your expectations in terms of the service you’ve received in the lead up to your tour. We really value feedback from our customers, if you’d like to send an email detailing the difficulties you have experienced, please send this to [email protected] so that we can investigate this further. - Maria

Do Not Use this company, they have a habit of cancelling school trips at the last minute

Dear schools & parents, please DO NOT USE this company, they have a habit of cancelling school trips at the last minute leaving children heartbroken. Not a 1 off if you do your research and look through their history & feedback. Disgraceful! Today 50 children were meant to go to Valencia and this company cancelled it 3 days before the trip. And they have the audacity to put fake post on Twitter congratulating the 50 children from HGSC on their trip even though they cancelled it 72 hours before.

Date of experience : 17 July 2023

Hi Ieva, following speaking to our operations team regarding this trip, they’ve informed me that on Thursday Ryanair notified us that the outbound flight to Valencia was cancelled due to the ongoing air traffic control strikes. Ryanair were unable to offer an alternative flight and so instead offered a refund. Our team searched for alternative flights with other airlines, however, due to the size of the group and the late notice, we were sadly unable to find an alternative that would allow the whole group to travel together. We contacted the school on Friday to inform them of the flight cancellation and that the only option for the tour to continue was to split the group on to two separate flights. The school then took the difficult decision to cancel the tour for safeguarding reasons. Our team are in the process of seeking compensation from Ryanair on the group’s behalf as requested by the school. We apologise for the tweet that was sent out. Unfortunately, due to the short notice of the cancellation, internal communication happened only after the tweet had already been scheduled. - Kylie

Cancelled ski trip less than 24 hours…

Cancelled ski trip less than 24 hours before departure. No buses was the excuse but that stinks. Company changed directorship in June last year. Do not assume this is the same company you might have used in the past. Unreliable, incompetent and uncaring. Del boy and Rodney would be more trustworthy. Avoid if you want a good reliable experience at all costs!

Independent School Ski Championships (2023)

The ISSC, organised and delivered by Halsbury in partnership with Impulse, was brilliant! The week was very well organised and our travelling party were supported by excellent staff throughout the week. Our accommodation was perfect for a school trip and the programme of events allowed for an action-packed week. We were impressed that Halsbury and the team took all feedback given in the previous year and showed clear efforts to ensure that all schools had the best time possible. Thank you to Halsbury and Impulse!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts about your experience with us at the recent ISSC racing event. We’re delighted to hear that you found the event to be well-organised and that the support provided by our staff had a positive impact on your group’s experience. Acting on feedback from previous year’s is a crucial part of ensuring that our groups have the best possible experience. We’re really pleased to hear that this came across. Thank you again for your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you to ISSC 2024! - Maria

What’s the price of disappointment

Trip for 90 students cancelled with less than 24 hours notice. Notwithstanding the cost of ski gear, ski lessons and effort to organise by our schools teachers….. How can you put a price on the look of disappointment on our 16 year olds. Horrendous. Acknowledged the offer of refund and compensation, equally someone will have to cover the cost of the hotels. Nothing better than negligent….. Hopefully the company manages its cash better than booking coaches, or there will be nothing coming back…. If you are booking a school trip, strongly recommend you look elsewhere.

Dear Adrian, We’re really sorry to have cancelled the trip. Our team tried everything possible to avoid cancelling. We're really disappointed we couldn’t find a solution. As we communicated in our letter, all families affected will receive a full refund, plus additional compensation. This has now been processed and paid to the school for them to pass on to parents and guardians. We understand that this does not make up for the disappointment, however, we hope it goes some way in acknowledging the expenses and upset this has caused. Sincere apologies and best regards, the Halsbury Team

Thank you Halsbury for a fantastic…

Thank you Halsbury for a fantastic trip. One of the best we have ever had. The rep ensured everything ran as smooth as possible with regards to the hotel, ski fit, the apres activities and the dealing with the coach drivers. Look forward to the next one!!

Hi, thank you so much for your feedback, we’re delighted to hear that your recent trip was one of the best you’ve been on. It’s fantastic to hear that your rep really enhanced the experience for you and we’ll certainly pass your feedback on to them – it’ll make their day. Superb 4 day trip to Barca / Salou 24th…

Superb 4 day trip to Barca / Salou 24th September. Travelled with 36 pupils who had a fantastic time at the Cambrills Sports Village , fixtures, coaching , theme park, nou camp etc etc. Every aspect of the tour was superbly organised and went to plan and all as described. Great communication , planning and value for money from Halsbury. I will be doing the same again next year with them. Brilliant trip, thank you to Halsbury, Kate, Maria for a hassle free well organised school tour.

Perfect trip

Well organised, with flexibility even over late additional students, with a great hotel, delicious restaurants chosen, and fantastic local agents in Greece. Can't recommend highly enough.

Dear Stephen, thank you for your glowing review! We’re thrilled to hear that you found our services well-organised and flexible, even amidst last-minute additional students. It's so rewarding to hear that our efforts to ensure a seamless experience for all our clients are paying off. We're really pleased to hear that you enjoyed the hotel and restaurants we selected. We’ll be sure to pass on your kind words to our local agents. Your recommendation means the world to us, and we can't thank you enough for taking the time to share your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back for another unforgettable adventure in the future! - Kylie

Shame on you Halsbury Travel.

Shame on you Halsbury Travel. How can you justify cancelling a ski trip with less than 24 hours notice after 14 months of planning! Which numpty in your company needs firing? It’s absolutely disgusting that 60 Year 11 kids are now devastated at not being able to go on this adventure of a lifetime. Compensation doesn’t cover the missed opportunities, memories that would have been made with friends and adventures that would’ve been had. You Halsbury travel are an absolute disgrace. I would give ZERO stars if I could.

Wow is all I have to say. After years of upset and instability for children across the country through Covid, I would like to understand the last minute and widespread cancellation of these trips? We believed that we were the unlucky ones, but it now appears like many children and families are unfortunately affected. Did this travel company fail to book any travel? Surely not! I really hope that the children travelling ahead of examinations in order to relax are suitably compensated. Right now I’m pretty sure the least of any parent/teacher worry is financial.

Date of experience : 01 April 2023

Hi Carine, We are really sorry for this situation, we do understand how upsetting it must have been for the children, especially after a really tough couple of years. Unfortunately, when doing the final checks ahead of Easter departures, it was discovered that the coaches hadn’t been confirmed for a small number of schools. Our team worked tirelessly to source alternative transport but were unsuccessful and we had to cancel these trips. As soon as this error was discovered, a thorough review of our processes was conducted and measures have been put in place to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. A full refund and additional compensation has been paid to schools to be distributed to affected families. – Maria

I cannot stress enough to any teachers…

I cannot stress enough to any teachers considering taking a trip of pupils on trip to AVOID this company. Firstly, the itinerary i only received at midnight before we fly in 2 days. There have been multiple mistakes that I have picked up on. Members of staff are regularly not available or on long term sick. Activities that we paid for are now not available such as the closing of Positano port and boat trips. I cant imagine not fulfilling my job role or responsibilities. If you want to chase up people every single day, experience sleepless nights and upset parents then go ahead use Halsbury.

Date of experience : 29 March 2023

Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review and for raising your concerns regarding your experience so far. We’re really disappointed to hear that we haven’t met your expectations, or the high standards we pride ourselves on. Unfortunately, in this instance, the original staff member that was looking after your trip was unwell for an extended period of time and so the remainder of your itinerary planning has been overseen personally by our Head of Operations. We’re very sorry that this disruption has added to the pressure on you in the lead up to your trip, that’s certainly not what we aim to do. I’ve spoken to my colleague who is going to contact you directly to follow up your concerns. We will do everything possible to ensure your trip runs smoothly and your group has the best possible experience while you’re away on tour. Best regards, Katie

Schools’ tour operator Halsbury Travel Group has bought IBT Travel with the support of investment group Literacy Capital.

It is the company’s first acquisition since it was bought by Literacy Capital, an investment fund set up with a charitable objective, in 2022.

IBT, founded in 1986, is based in Prestwick, Scotland, and provides ski and educational trips to both English and Scottish schools.

Halsbury Travel has been offering school trips for nearly 40 years and offers a range of products across ski, music, sport, languages and education.

As a result of the deal, Halsbury said it would be able to offer its trips to a wider client base and collaborate with IBT  to improve processes, systems and commercial practices.

IBT founder Iain Black said: “I believe Halsbury is the right home for IBT and I know that it will continue to thrive under its new ownership.”

Halsbury chief executive Robin Parry, who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years at operators including Discover the World, Gold Medal, Holidaybreak and Airtours, said: “Iain has built a fantastic business with a great reputation and excellent people.

“It is very complementary to Halsbury Travel and I am delighted it is now part of the group, enabling us to collectively grow and flourish. This is an exciting new chapter for Halsbury Travel Group.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
