Santa Monica is the quintessential Southern California beach town.

Even people from Los Angeles get away to this charming community on the water.

It’s a beach lovers’ paradise with an air of sophistication around every corner.

This walkable (or bikeable) city provides everything you need to relax, dine, and window shop the day away.

You’ve probably seen the Santa Monica beachside bike path in one of your favorite movies.

The must-see Santa Monica Pier offers an Instagram-worthy photo opportunity with bars, restaurants, an amusement park, and sunset views that will take your breath away.

U.S. News and World Report rank this city in the top 10 Best Places to Visit in California and its clear tourists feel the same, with 8 million people on average visiting each year.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Santa Monica

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

There's a medium risk overall in Santa Monica, simply due to the lure of tourists, which can make easy targets for crooks. The crime numbers overall are lower than the California average.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

The city of Santa Monica strongly encourages visitors to ditch the car and use other transportation options. Given the variety and oversight of the various modes of transportation, we're giving it a low risk. You can choose from electric scooters, rideshares, the Big Blue Bus catering just to the Santa Monica area, golf-cart rides through Circuit, and a Metro rail stop from Los Angeles.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM

A medium pickpocket risk exists in Santa Monta because people tend to come here with lots of money and are ready to spend it. Especially at the shopping Mecca on Third Street Promenade, it's important to keep an eye on your belongings.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

The very day this article was written, Santa Monica was hit by a magnitude 2.8 earthquake. So there's a medium risk of some kind of seismic activity, but if you are a Southern California native reading this, you might laugh saying "That's just a way of life here." The San Andreas fault is the biggest earth-shaker, but there is a Santa Monica fault line as well. Wildfires can impact air quality here as well. The average thunderstorm or rainy day? Those are few and far between. On average you'll get mild weather, and the only downside is in June when there's a lot of smog and gloom over the picturesque community.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The medium risk from pickpocketing carries over into the mugging category. Santa Monica police encourage visitors to store their wallets inside a jacket or shirt and also keep purses under a firm grip close to the body.

TERRORISM RISK: MEDIUM

The Los Angeles Metro area is known to be a potential target for terrorists, but there's no impending doom lurking over the city. Nevertheless, we'll give it a medium risk. Santa Monica Police encourage everyone to "See something, say something" when it comes to anything that seems odd.

SCAMS RISK: MEDIUM

Santa Monica Police say a con game can happen to anyone, anywhere, but elderly people are especially vulnerable. There's a medium risk this could happen in such a busy area. Police recommend never giving out personal information or taking out cash to help someone, no matter how honest they seem.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: MEDIUM

Women have a medium risk for all the reasons we've listed above. You can lower that risk by following basic common sense— be aware of your surroundings when walking through new areas, be confident in your attitude when walking, and stay near areas where there are businesses or other people. There are a lot of panhandlers in the Santa Monica area, and you can just ignore them and keep walking.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

Santa Monica has a low risk in its tap water. The latest water report shows no violations and that the water meets or exceeds regulations. The city does advise people to use tap water sparingly to help with the drought.

  • Safest Places to Visit in Santa Monica

Santa Monica is home to eight neighborhoods, each offering a different slice of Southern California life.

Given how tourism-driven this community is, you’re going to see a lot of police officers.

The bigger the crowds, the more police you’ll see.

Here’s a glimpse at the neighborhoods:

  • Downtown: shopping, dining, hotels
  • Main Street: the artsy part of town
  • Mid-City: arts & entertainment area (Hello, celebrity sightings?)
  • Montana Avenue: high-end shopping & residential
  • Ocean Park Boulevard: artsy, coffee shops, boutiques (and near the airport)
  • Pico Boulevard: most ethnically and culturally diverse part of town
  • Santa Monica Pier: The postcard shot
  • Wilshire Boulevard: major thoroughfare loaded with shopping and dining (expect crowds)

The Santa Monica Pier is one of the most patrolled parts of the city, but it also has the biggest crowds.

Just use common sense when it comes to safety.

The pier activities close at 10 pm, but the beach is open 24/7.

  • Places to Avoid in Santa Monica

When every one of the eight neighborhoods has a crime rate lower than the rest of Los Angeles, it’s hard to say there’s a “bad” part of town.

Violent crime has been so up and down over the past 30 years, but there’s a downward trend from the crime spikes of the 1990s.

You’ll want to avoid the groups of homeless people that can gather in the touristy areas like right along the beach or near the shopping areas.

Santa Monica residents talk on social media about how there are a lot of panhandlers, but they aren’t known as aggressive and if you ignore them they’ll leave you alone.

According to crime stats and social media reports, the area south of I-10 might get a little more dangerous, so don’t go walking there at night.

You can walk around at night in the neighborhoods, but avoid walking down alleys or dark streets, like you would any city.

Stay on lighted paths near people.

  • Safety Tips for Traveling to Santa Monica
  • There are almost 1,000 homeless people in the Santa Monica area. This can be an eyesore and a safety hazard. The Santa Monica Department gives this sage advice, “Never display money or reveal where you keep it to anyone. The person asking for change may be tempted to forcibly demand that you give up all of your cash.” If anyone does get aggressive while asking for money, report it immediately to the police.
  • Do not let an animal panhandle either. The Santa Monica Animal Control Division asks tourists to avoid feeding any animals, from birds to raccoons. Feeding an animal can cause health issues for them. Just enjoy the view.
  • You’ll be on shaky ground in Santa Monica, as it’s near one of the largest fault lines in the world. Southern California gets a whopping 10,000 quakes per year. That’s just on the seismic charts, however, and only a few hundred can be felt. The United States Geological Survey says only about 20 are higher than a 4.0. Tourists might get freaked out by the ground moving, but it’s normal for people who live here. If it makes you feel better, Californians wouldn’t know what to do if they saw a tornado and are notoriously bad at driving in the rain.
  • Where there’s smoke, there’s wildfire. The Santa Monica area can be impacted by western wildfires throughout the year. These fires can get quite large and destructive, shutting down freeways with thick smoke and reducing air quality. Check the wildfire forecast for your trip and take health precautions if you are outside.
  • Beware of “June Gloom.” While June is one of the most popular times to visit Santa Monica, it doesn’t come with the expected sunny beach days. Low clouds and fog hover over Santa Monica for the first part of the day, giving way to the sun around early afternoon. We could get weather technical with the thermal low and how it works, but let’s just leave it at “June Gloom” so you’re aware that an afternoon at the beach will be sunnier than a morning visit.
  • To avoid big crowds, the best time of year to visit is during the fall or winter. Prices go down at hotels from October – February. The weather might be a little colder, but with a winter average high doesn’t dip below 65°(F).
  • Repeat after me, “I will wear good walking shoes in Santa Monica and will focus on function instead of fashion.” Santa Monica is a walkable town. It’s less than 9 miles in distance to explore all eight neighborhoods. There’s encouragement from the police and the tourism bureau to ditch the car and walk, bike, or ride public transportation. You don’t want to ruin a good day with blisters and sore feet.
  • Celebrity sightings are common in Santa Monica. It’s close to Hollywood and it’s as good of a getaway for you as it is for Ben Affleck. The most common places to spot a star are The Ivy at the Shore, the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market, Montana Avenue, and the Third Street Promenade. If you do spot a celebrity, be respectful and nice when asking for a photo or autograph.
  • Know the beach rules. There is no alcohol, smoking, or glass allowed on the beach. If you want to fish from the pier, you’ll need a sport fishing license. Animals are allowed on the boardwalk, but not on the beach.
  • Know the water. The beaches of Santa Monica give way to the beautiful Pacific Ocean, which can startle swimmers with its cool temperature, averaging just 62°(F) year-round. Avoid swimming anywhere near the pier because of strong currents and barnacles found there.
  • So... How Safe Is Santa Monica Really?

Let’s break down the numbers.

According to the most recent FBI data, based on just the population, the violent crime rate is 721.4 in 100,000.

Now, let’s look at that number with tourists added in.

Santa Monica officials say on any given day there are 250,000 in the area.

Doing that math, the violent crime rate is 256.6 per 100,000.

The robbery rate with tourists added in is 98.8 in 100,000.

The theft rate is 1,257 in 100,000.

With Santa Monica being such a tourist draw, the city officials and law enforcement are going to put extra focus on keeping it safe.

If it’s not safe, tourists won’t come.

You just shouldn’t set yourself up for a crime of opportunity by wearing expensive jewelry, flashing money around, or leaving articles unattended when you jump in the water or run to the bathroom.

  • How Does Santa Monica Compare?
  • Useful Information

You'll take care of the visa requirements at the airport of your choice. Getting into Santa Monica only requires the patience needed on Los Angeles freeways.

The currency is the U.S. Dollar. Just don't go waving it around. Keep your money close to your body and out of sight.

Santa Monica's weather is mild year-round. High temperatures can get into the 60s in the winter and up to the 90s in the summer. It's a casual community where shorts and a top or a sundress work just fine. Pack a jacket for those beach breezes that can chill the night air. Winter lows can get into the 50s.

You can choose from several commercial airports in the Los Angeles metro area, but Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is closest to Santa Monica at just 12 miles away. LAX also has bus service and shuttles right to Santa Monica. Hollywood Burnak Aiport is 23 miles away. The Long Beach Airport is 30 miles south. John Wayne Airport is 52 miles away in Orange County. Always leave extra time for airport trips due to the infamous Los Angeles traffic jams.

Travel Insurance

Getting to Santa Monica isn't always a day at the beach, so it's good to get travel insurance to make sure you don't lose money on your getaway. While there are a lot of travel options in the Los Angeles area, delays can arise as a ripple effect from weather and staffing impacts nationwide. Ensure the trip and you'll be at the beach before you know it!

Santa Monica labeled as one of the most unsafe cities in California

By KCAL News Staff

April 2, 2022 / 9:25 PM PDT / KCAL News

Santa Monica, one of the county's most popular tourist sites, ranked near last in safest cities in California in a new report from Safewise.com.

"It's humiliating," said lifelong resident Janet McLaughlin. "Terrible, That's why we have a group called Santa Monicans Against Crime. We've been trying to get the word out. I feel really bad for people who don't know, like tourists."

The Safewise ranking uses two factors for its safety ratings: property and violent crime. According to their report looking at 230 cities, with a population of 90,474 Santa Monica recorded 6.0 violent crimes per 1,000 people and 42.6 property crimes per 1,000 people making it the 224th safest city in the state. In 2021, they ranked 222nd.

"Everyone is in a constant state of alertness and nervousness, it seems," said Santa Monica City Councilman Phil Brock. "Everybody's looking over their shoulder."

Brock said he and other officials are working to improve safety around the city. He believed that an increased police presence, neighborhood watch groups and keeping people off the streets will help solve the increase in crime.

"Not to let them go unattended," he said. "From street services to medical services we are actively stopping those people from being on the streets."

In response to the ranking, the city issued the following statement:

"Santa Monica is more than a community of approximately 93,000 residents and there are significant factors that make our City unique. Swelling with an average daily population of 250,000 visitors throughout the day and during peak seasons, Santa Monica serves as a jobs center and a hub for state, national and international tourism which  attracts millions of visitors each year.

"To provide an accurate depiction of crime in the City, it is necessary to look at of its average daily population of  250,000, not 95,000, as that provides a more accurate depiction of crime in the city.  The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) did reach out to SafeWise to determine the source of their metrics.  In their discussions, Safewise indicated that they do not take into consideration the daily commuter and tourism metrics and agree it does impact the overall impressions to crime. They do provide a disclaimer sharing that in their study as they understand there are a variety of factors and such metrics are not clear.

"In February of 2022, the Santa Monica Police Department did a five-year analysis of Part I crimes.  In their findings, there is a decrease in Part 1 crimes (Burglary, Arson, Murder, Rape et al) from 2021 to 2022 and in February of 2021 there were 740 Part 1 crimes.  In February of 2022, there were 655 Part 1 crimes.  In 2020 there were 598 Part 1 crimes, in 2019, 722 and in 2018, 804. Crime has fluctuated throughout the last five year but as we stand today, we are experiencing a reduction in our violent, reportable crime statistics.

"While the SMPD is pleased that the overall numbers of reported crimes are down, the City and police department remain vigilant and are working hard day-in and day-out to address the crime that occurs in our community. SMPD's Community Affairs team continues to attend neighborhood and business district meetings, host events like coffee with a cop, and working to educate our community members about crime that is occurring in Santa Monica. Our focus and attention to issues of crime and community safety is unwavering."

Two cities in the region ranked lower than Santa Monica with Compton at 225th and San Bernardino at 228th.

Rancho Santa Margarita and Moorpark ranked second and third respectively.

"That's not the Santa Monica we all knew and loved," said McLaughlin. "We still love it but we want it to be safer."

Santa Monica Warnings and Dangers

Santa Monica, California, is a gorgeous vacation spot that boasts a moderate climate, an interesting history, and plenty of things to see and do. While travelers generally find Santa Monica to be a welcoming and enjoyable city, it does have some dangers and pitfalls that travelers should be aware of.

Homeless Population

Like many beach areas with moderate climates, Santa Monica has a significant homeless population. You may see homeless people sleeping on the beach or congregating on the 3rd Street Promenade. While many are harmless, you may be approached by homeless people asking for money or other items. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash, and report any instances of harassment or public disturbance to the local police.

Crime and Muggings

Santa Monica is not a high-crime area, but as is the case in many tourist destinations, visitors to the city may be targets for muggings or robberies, especially if they appear particularly affluent or vulnerable. It’s important to take common sense precautions.

Use traveler’s checks and credit cards rather than cash, as they can be replaced if stolen. Keep expensive electronics like cameras, cell phones, or tablets close to your person and out of view as much as possible. Women should carry short-handled purses close to their bodies instead of long-handled bags that dangle. Lock up your vehicle or bicycle.

Make sure to observe the local laws so that you don’t wind up facing fines or punishment. Metered parking is strictly monitored, so make sure to have enough change on hand for the meter, or you will wind up with a parking ticket. Smoking is prohibited on the Santa Monica Pier.

By taking simple precautions, you should be able to avoid trouble and enjoy your stay in Santa Monica.

Santa Monica's 3 ½ miles of shoreline, known as Santa Monica State Beach, is renowned as one of the area's best , thanks to the soft sands, ideal weather and bevy of attractions. In addition to the gorgeous stretch of sand, the beach is home to unique amenities like the Original Muscle Beach (a 1930s-era beach park with retro gym equipment), the Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park amusement park. There are plenty of casual places to dine and shop for souvenirs. What's more, the beach offers traditional facilities, such as the North Beach Playground and the Annenberg Community Beach House , a public recreation facility that features a pool, a splash pad, a playground and beach courts, among other amenities.

Santa Monica Pier Santa Monica Pier free

Stretching from the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Ocean Front Walk (the end of Route 66) to a spot above Santa Monica Bay, the Santa Monica Pier is the beach 's most recognizable landmark. Not only will you see it in countless photos of the city, but you'll also catch a glimpse of it in several films, including "Forrest Gump." Some of its most popular amenities include a historic carousel (housed in the Looff Hippodrome), the  Heal the Bay Aquarium and Pacific Park , which boasts an assortment of arcade games, rides and food stalls.

According to past travelers, Santa Monica's pier is a must-see, with nice eateries and great views.  However, a few recent visitors lamented the pier's thick crowds and amount of homelessness.

Explore the Marvin Braude Bike Trail Explore the Marvin Braude Bike Trail free

Santa Monica's abundance of trails and sublime weather year-round make it an excellent destination for cycling. In the heart of the city, you'll discover the Marvin Braude Beach Trail (or "The Strand," as it's called by locals), plus scenic thoroughfares like Main Street and San Vincente Boulevard that are bike-friendly. The city also sits just south of the Santa Monica Mountains, where additional trails are available for mountain biking. Electric bicycle tours can be arranged as well, if you want some insight about what you're seeing as you explore Santa Monica and nearby Venice Beach .

Previous visitors overwhelmingly recommended biking the 22-mile Marvin Braude Beach Trail, citing its phenomenal ocean vistas and well-maintained path as highlights. However, some say it can get a bit congested and warn to watch for pedestrians. You can also consider venturing farther out – the trail's northern terminus is located at Will Rogers State Beach in LA 's Pacific Palisades neighborhood and ends at Torrance County Beach in Torrance – for a less crowded experience. If you'd like to rent a bike and explore on your own, consider a reputable company like The Bike Center . For a guided tour, reviewers suggested booking an electric bicycle tour with Pedal... or Not , which reviewers praise for its knowledgeable guides and easy-to-use bikes.

Tongva Park Tongva Park free

Like skinnier Palisades Park to the west, Tongva Park offers a welcome respite from Santa Monica's tourist-filled beach and shopping thoroughfare. In this 6-acre oasis, which is named after the region's Indigenous Tongva Indian Tribe, you'll find a mix of native and locally appropriate plants spread throughout four areas: Observation Hill, Discovery Hill, Garden Hill and Gathering Hill. Observation Hill beckons to those in search of phenomenal ocean panoramas. Discovery Hill draws families with its kids' amenities, including a splash pad, a play area and a shaded picnic facility. Garden Hill impresses nature lovers with its stunning flora (think: colorful lilies, agaves in various shapes and tall pokers in fiery hues). And Gathering Hill draws culture hounds keen on attending a free concert at the amphitheater or checking out the park's unique Weather Field art installation.

Previous visitors loved Tongva Park's thoughtful design, central location, beautiful landscaping and excellent children's amenities. However, some felt uncomfortable with the number of homeless residents they saw here during their visits. If this is a concern to you, plan on visiting during the day; several past visitors said the park felt less safe at night.

Pacific Park Pacific Park free

Whether you're traveling with children or craving an adrenaline rush, Pacific Park delivers. Located on the Santa Monica Pier , this ocean-facing amusement park is packed with arcade games and thrill rides. Like carnivals and fairs hosted annually across the country, Pacific Park offers a variety of classic games, including Whac-A-Mole, ring toss and water races. But the park's main draws are its 12 exhilarating rides. Soar above the pier on the world's only solar-powered Ferris wheel, swing back-and-forth on a sea dragon-themed ship, plummet 44 feet on a tower ride or go racing around the pier on the West Coast's only oceanfront steel roller coaster. When you're not enjoying the park's heart-pumping activities, buy a souvenir from a gift shop or grab a bite to eat from one of several quick-service food stalls.

Many previous travelers loved visiting Pacific Park, citing its family-friendly atmosphere and superb setting as highlights. However, a few cautioned that park can feel crowded at times due to its small size and popularity. Though you can pay for rides individually, several reviewers suggested buying the unlimited rides wristband so you can enjoy multiple rides more than once.

Situated within walking distance of central sights like the Santa Monica Pier and the Third Street Promenade , this narrow but long park – which is bordered by Ocean Avenue, the Pacific Coast Highway, Colorado Avenue and Adelaide Drive – offers plenty of postcard-worthy vistas. What's more, the 26.4-acre park is packed with amenities designed to help you relax while soaking up some sun. In addition to housing standard park facilities like picnic tables, benches and restrooms, you'll have access to a rose garden, public art and a space that hosts monthly art classes for adults. There's also a visitor center kiosk on-site, should you want additional information about things to see and do in the area.

When you're not taking pictures of the water, you should admire the park's gorgeous flora. You'll find all kinds of drought-tolerant species here, including agave plants and palm trees. Plus, Palisades Park features a gorgeous rose garden and interesting sculptures. Travelers highly recommend it as a nice place for a family picnic. However, finding an empty park bench can be a challenge at times due to the park's popularity with the local homeless community.

Santa Monica Makes Most Dangerous Cities List

Among the safest cities in southern california in the safewise.com survey include moorpark, laguna niguel, and rancho santa margarita., by ted chen • published april 4, 2022 • updated on april 4, 2022 at 9:09 pm.

Some Santa Monica residents have been aback by a new survey that ranks their city as one of the least safest in California.

In reality, violent crime and property crime have both gone down in the city of Santa Monica this past year according to FBI data. That fact is acknowledged by both the city and the people behind the survey. So what keeps Santa Monica still at the bottom of the list?

People who live in the tourist city of Santa Monica who spoke with NBCLA don't see it as an unsafe city, but a new survey by safewise.com suggests otherwise. Santa Monica ranks with Oakland, San Bernardino, and Compton among the least safe cities in California.

"Intuitively it doesn’t exactly make sense as someone who lives here that we’re among the least safe cities in the country," said Marc Morgenstern of the Ocean Park Association.

Morgenstern is a 15-year resident. He points out, as did the city in response to the survey, that Santa Monica shouldn’t be measured by its 95,000 residents, but by the quarter million people that move about there every day, including workers and tourists. That, they argue, would make its ranking much better.

"If you reflected the actual number of people in the city every day, not only residents but workers and visitors, the rating in the city would be much improved in terms of safety," Morgenstern said.

"A lot of cities experience tourism especially the bigger cities," Andrew Hull of safewise.com said.

Hull says the survey did its best to compare cities fairly. He says Santa Monica has consistently had one of the highest rates of property crimes and that’s what keeps its ranking near the bottom.

"It's really admirable that the city’s violent crime rate went down but Santa Monica’s property crime rate is where we’re seeing a lot of the problems here," Hull said.

City council member Phil Brock says residents do worry about crime issues connected to the city’s homeless population. But he says the city is working hard to calm fears.

"I want everyone feeling safe walking down our streets and alleys," Brock said.

"This is a wonderful place to live. It feels safe. The police department does a very good job."

The city also posted a statement to its website in response to the report, saying in part:

"While the SMPD is pleased that the overall numbers of reported crimes are down, the City and police department remain vigilant and are working hard day-in and day-out to address the crime that occurs in our community...Our focus and attention to issues of crime and community safety is unwavering."

Among the safest cities in Southern California in the safewise.com survey include Moorpark, Laguna Niguel, and Rancho Santa Margarita. See the list here.

Is Santa Monica Safe At Night? (Tourist Guide)

Santa Monica is one of the more intriguing spots in California.

Tourists will often spend time here because of the famous Santa Monica Pier. We love this attraction because it reminds us of our childhood where you are having fun, there are lots of activities, and the weather is good.

Santa Monica is the real deal as a place.

However, we know you are going to want to consider the safety if you are going out at night. Some people like staying here at night, so you are going to want to look into the safety of Santa Monica in California.

Is it a safe place?

We would say it is one of the safer places in California and it is a great tourist attraction. Of course, we do recommend sticking to the tourist spots but it is a nice area.

You are not going to feel out of place here or in danger.

Let’s take a look at how to stay safe in Santa Monica and how safe it is.

Table of Contents

How To Stay Safe In Santa Monica At Night

Stay close to the pier.

The most common spot people are going to go to will be the Santa Monica Pier.

We often do this when we are in the area because it’s the heartbeat of Santa Monica. When you are here, you are going to have a lovely time.

There is so much to do and it’s common for tourists to show up to the area for a bit of fun. We loved being here and it’s a spot we always want to check out when in LA.

The one thing we would recommend is to stay close to the Santa Monica Pier. We say this because of the safety in place for this tourist attraction. It’s going to have the most police and you are going to feel safe when you are out here at night.

is santa monica safe to visit

Go To The Tourist Spots

You will want to take the time to go to the tourist spots at night.

The reason we say this is simple.

When you go to the major tourist spots in Santa Monica, you are going to see more foot traffic in these areas. This makes it a lot safer and is not going to make you a target if someone were to think of assault or theft.

While this rarely happens, it is still something you are going to want to think about.

You are going to want to go to the main tourist spots and ensure you are reducing the chances of getting caught in a bad situation.

Don’t Go To Venice Beach

We have gone from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach in the past.

This includes us writing about safety in Venice Beach .

Venice Beach is not as safe as Santa Monica. This is something you are going to want to account for. Don’t put yourself in a situation where things could go wrong. It’s easy to assume it is all one area, but there are differences between the two.

You are more likely to deal with crime in Venice Beach at night than in Santa Monica.

If you are thinking about going to Venice Beach then we would make sure to go during the day. This is going to allow you to see what is on offer without taking a risk.

Protect Your Valuables

We would also look into protecting your valuables in Santa Monica.

While we haven’t seen theft and/or pickpocketing, this is natural in most areas such as these. You are going to be exposed to all sorts of people including locals that might be thinking of pickpocketing.

It’s essential to take precautions as a tourist.

The one thing we always do is make sure to store those items in our hotel room. We don’t take them out with us everywhere we go.

Just keep a bit of cash, your phone, and your cards. This is all you are going to need when you are out and about in Santa Monica.

Final Thoughts

Santa Monica is a safe place and a tourist place.

Santa Monica is one area where you are going to want to go as a tourist. We adore this spot because it’s charming, vibrant, and there is lots to do throughout the day. This includes going out in Santa Monica at night.

Tourists are always awake here.

This is why it’s a nice, safe place to be. However, we would still follow the tips that have been mentioned in this guide.

We also recommend reading about going to Los Angeles from Santa Barbara , the safety of being in downtown Los Angeles , and cool sound baths in Los Angeles .

Is Santa Monica Worth Visiting? 5 Major Reasons Why We Think So

If you are visiting the Los Angeles area, you might wonder, “is Santa Monica worth visiting?” Is it just a tourist trap or are there many things to do in the city?

We take an in-depth look at what Santa Monica has to offer these days in 2023 so that you can understand if it is the right destination for you to visit during your trip and how long you may want to stay.

Santa Monica is certainly not for everyone and it does get quite crowded, but we think that this famed city where Route 66 ends is ultimately worth your time, even if it is just for a few hours.

Table of Contents

Is Santa Monica Worth Visiting? Background

Is-Santa-Monica-Worth-Visiting-Santa-Monica-Pier

First, we will start with a little background on Santa Monica. It is a city in Los Angeles County that sits directly on the Pacific Ocean. It started as a resort town for Hollywood celebrities and remains a place to see and be seen today.

It is located just 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, making it quite convenient to visit for a daytrip. It is also only 15 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport, so it could be the first place you visit when you get off the plane.

While it may be best known for its pier and the beachfront, Santa Monica offers a lot more and is a bustling city that is home to over 90,000 residents.

Here are all of the top reasons why we think that Santa Monica is worth visiting.

1. Unlimited Fun in the Sun

Is-Santa-Monica-Worth-Visiting-Santa-Monica-Beach

We believe that the famed Santa Monica Pier and Santa Monica State Beach are already reasons enough to visit the city.

The Pier offers many attractions and things to do for the whole family to enjoy. There is a roller coaster, ferris wheel, and tons of restaurants and food carts that can take up a whole afternoon.

It is also a great place to catch one of California’s most dazzling sunsets.

Meanwhile, Santa Monica’s beach is the perfect place to relax and catch some rays. This beach is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Southern California and is a must-see for any first time visitor. Best of all, the beach is free to enjoy!

It features beach volleyball courts, a muscle beach area, and bike paths. The beach will also be hosting beach volleyball and surfing for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

You can also rent a bike or some roller blades and go all the way down the boardwalk and reach Venice Beach.

2. Parks to Enjoy

Santa Monica is not just about the beach life. It offers numerous green spaces across the city where you can relax without getting any sand in your clothes.

Check out Palisades Park, which is a 26-acre park located along the northern shores of Santa Monica.

Is-Santa-Monica-Worth-Visiting-Palisades-Park

This elevated bluff offers stunning views of the ocean and is another excellent (and free) activity for the whole family to enjoy.

There is also Tongva Park, a recently revitalized green space that features a playground, an amphitheater, and waterfalls. It provides scenic views of the ocean and of Santa Monica Pier.

3. Beach Clubs

No visit to Santa Monica can be complete without a visit to one of their beach clubs. These social houses are located right on the beach front and offer a cool space to eat, swim, play, and relax.

One of the most famous beach clubs is the Annenberg Community Beach House , which was commissioned by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s. This public beach facility is open to the public and features a swimming pool and an art gallery.

You can also check out Jonathan Club, which is a private social club with good food and a fun atmosphere.

4. Unique Shopping Experiences

Santa Monica is a great place for shopaholics. You can find everything from small boutiques to large retail stores across the city.

The most famous shopping street in Santa Monica is the Third Street Promenade , which offers 3 blocks with 80 stores that are also just 3 blocks from the beach.

Here, you can find upscale retailers like Tiffany, Rolex, and Coach alongside many locally-owned small businesses. There are also numerous food options that you can indulge in on this street.

At the end of the promenade, there is also Santa Monica Place, which is a huge open air mall that features Nordstroms, a food court, and a movie theater.

Additionally, you can shop for fresh and local foods at various Santa Monica Farmers Markets, which take place during the weekends and on Wednesdays around the city.

5. Art & Culture

When you are tired of being out in the sun, you can check out some of Santa Monica’s best art galleries, museums, and other places of interest .

For example, there is the Bergamot Station Arts Center , which hosts contemporary art in an old warehouse and factory.

There is also the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium that is located right under Santa Monica Pier.

Finally, you can check out a play or live event at the Santa Monica Playhouse.

One Reason Not to Visit Santa Monica

There is one major warning that we have to give those looking to visit Santa Monica. If you are planning to drive in, be aware that there can be some extremely heavy traffic around downtown depending on the time of day.

It can take up to 30 minutes just to go from the exit off the highway to the parking garage next to the pier.

So, we advise you to plan ahead when driving or to consider using public transportation so that you don’t have to worry about the traffic or pay for parking.

Is Santa Monica Worth Visiting? Summary

So, is Santa Monica worth visiting? Overall, we think that the answer is yes. It offers so many things to do outside at the beach or the parks as well as several great shopping districts that are filled with top stores and restaurants.

You probably only need 2 or 3 hours to get the taste of Santa Monica, but don’t be surprised if you stay the whole night and watch the sunset in this delightful city.

We are confident that you will not regret it.

Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings when visiting Santa Monica and you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable visit.

The City of Santa Monica is a suburb in the greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Although there are 10 million people in LA County, just 90,000 live in Santa Monica (although that’s hard to believe when see the crowds on a hot summer weekend). Like any big city in the United States, LA has its fare share of criminals eager to take advantage of an unlocked car or unattended suitcase, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead, be aware of your surroundings, and keep an eye on your belongings.

Amongst the most common crimes reported on the Santa Monica Pier, violent crimes like fights or major burglaries are relatively uncommon. The most common crime reported around the Pier in Santa Monica are thefts from vehicles; ask any Santa Monica Police Officer and they will be quick to tell you that the vast majority of these thefts are a result of a flashy, expensive item like a camera or purse inadvertently left out on the seat of an unlocked car. Be sure to double check doors and windows after parking your car at the beach and place any loose items in a locked trunk.

Thefts of bicycles are also sadly common in every community across LA. Because many bike thefts go unreported, it’s difficult to know the exact extend of the problem, but the LA Times recently reported that over 200,000 bicycles were stolen nationwide in 2014 . The Los Angeles Police Department encourages cyclists to use their locks correctly , only lock bikes to actual bike racks (so no railings or road signs), and to register your bike with bike recovery resources like the Bike Index . Biking is a very common (and fun) activity at Santa Monica State Beach. If renting a bike from one of the many bike shops in Santa Monica, be sure to use the provided lock when stopping to take photos, and never leave an unlocked bike unattended – not even just to dip into that shop for just 10 seconds.

Homelessness and individuals living on the street is not an uncommon sight in Los Angeles. For decades, free-spirits and vagabonds have flocked to Southern California where the temperate climate, access to resources, and relaxed prohibitions on living outside has fostered a sustained community of Angelenos who opt into the counter-culture of street life. Although not for everyone, living without an established home is not against the law. Visitors are cautioned to not give money or other hand outs to panhandlers or people asking for change. Often times, these requests are a scam or front, and the money rarely goes to providing a needed meal or bus fare; sometimes the loose change given to someone on the street will instead be spent on feeding an addiction. Santa Monica has many social services and resources for individuals seeking a place to sleep or hot meal. Based at the Santa Monica Pier, West Coast Care focuses on outreach, relationship building, and the reunification of homeless individuals with their families and close friends.

On very busy weekends at the Pier, opportunistic peddlers and con artists may show up at the Pier to sell unlicensed merchandise, food or beverages from non-permitted vending areas, or solicit tips or donations to non-existent causes and charities. Before spending any money, be sure to look for signs that the individual represents a licensed and legitimate business: is the food vending cart displaying a valid LA County Health permit (usually an 8×11” sheet with a big blue “A”); is the performer in a designated performance spot (marked with a white star on the ground); is the solicitor asking for cash only or acting in a “pushy” manner to get you to commit quickly?

The most common “scams” or “cons” at LA tourist destinations include: “independent and up-and-coming musicians” selling CDs of their music; “monks” or similar representatives from non-specific religious organizations offering free items like books or beads, then demanding a donation; non-licensed retail vendors selling bootleg t-shirts, cheaply made beach toys, or other questionable merchandise with no permit (you can easily identify these illegitimate businesses by the fact they do not offer receipts); and non-permitted food peddlers offering hot dogs, bottled beverages, or candies from push carts or trays (similarly, no receipts or health permits will be displayed). In addition to being a nuisance at high traffic destinations like the Santa Monica Pier, these businesses do not pay sales tax, pass health inspections, provide access for hand washing to their workers, or care if the people buying from them get sick from undercooked hot dogs or are ripped off by cheap merchandise.

Although Santa Monica Police officers will ask these types of scammers and opportunistic peddlers to leave or disperse, the attraction of making big bucks off unassuming visitors becomes a risk some eager hustlers are willing to take. Guests to the Santa Monica Pier and Beach are encouraged to only make purchases from legitimate businesses displaying valid business licenses and health inspections permits.

If visiting the Pier and you have a question regarding safety, visit the Santa Monica Police substation located midway on the Pier across from Bubba Gump Shrimp Company . Uniformed police officers and Harbor Patrol Officers can be seen patrolling the pier, often times in their black and white LAPD pickup truck. Additionally, Pacific Park’s security team, identified by their bright yellow jackets, are available inside the amusement park.

Aside from normal big city cautions, I don't think there is any problem in this part of town.

It's safe, you can walk all you like. I do not recommend walking the Venice Boardwalk after dark, however, as it becomes quiet. But Venice itself (Main Street, Abbot Kinney) is fine. Shop it up, along with all the other women on their own out there shopping.

Santa Monica Beach Among 25 Best In The Country: Ranking

S ANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica Beach was named among the 25 best in the country, according to a new ranking from Travel + Leisure .

The magazine cast a wide net to complete its best-beach roundup, selecting lakeside and coastal beaches with varying levels of amenities and scenery.

"Different criteria define the perfect beach for different people, such as the quality of the sand, the waves (or lack thereof), level of seclusion, public transportation and accessible parking, whether there's a boardwalk, activities, and even the amount of shade," Travel + Leisure wrote.

The list includes four California beaches, as well as others in Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina and across the country.

"Nothing screams summer on the pier like funnel cake and a Ferris wheel. The famous Santa Monica Pier draws people from all over the state with its classic amusement park complete with a roller coaster, games, and golden-fried carnival treats," Travel + Leisure wrote.

The magazine also highlighted Heal the Bay Aquarium, located beneath the Santa Monica Pier.

"This vibrant stretch along the Pacific is also a prime spot for partaking in all the usual beach activities: sunbathing, swimming, surfing, volleyball, and sunset viewing. You can also bike, jog, or walk along the paved path to iconic Venice Beach down the way," Travel + Leisure wrote.

The magazine's other California beach picks were Carmel Beach, Coronado Beach and Pope Beach on Lake Tahoe.
