Intimate and sweet - Sena is the best!
"Sena is delightful and insightful. She explained everything there is to know about sushi, gyoza and sake while being kind, inquisitive and open about Japan, Tokyo, and her personal life! Take this tour if you want a firsthand and authentic sushi conveyor belt experience. "
Amazing Collection of bites
"Thank you Sena-san, the tour has been really good and you made a good selection of Bites. We were really full at the and and the food was really delicious. "
"Our guide (Sena) met us at at the agreed time, discussed the options available to us and introduced us to some exceptionally good places to eat. She patiently explained everything to us, and answered all our questions. We walked at a pace that suited us throughout. We would recommend Sena without a moment's hesitation! 5✴️"
Amazing food tour with Ai
"Ai took my family and I to a variety of stands and restaurants which allowed us the opportunity to try many different, unique dishes. She was very accommodating and patient to help make it family friendly for our 3 year old. She also honored our request for some tasty craft beer and provided extra recommendations after the tour was finished. Highly recommended!"
A friendly and fun intro to Tokyo
"We really enjoyed our tour with Gulay and really felt we were being shown around by a friend. She gave us a tour of the Shibuya area of the city, taking us across famous Shibuya scramble crossing and introducing the kids to the crazy capsule dispenser shops - much to their delight! Gulay gave us some great tips for restaurants and also showed us the best place to buy our Shinkansen tickets. She also gave us some really helpful advice both before and after the tour. "
Perfectly tailored tour
"This was the perfect intro to exploring bustling Shibuya! Gulay took our preferences and interests into account when showing us highlights of the area and telling us stories about its history that resonated with everyone in our group. Gulay is immediately friendly and enthusiastic and great with kids too. Thank you Gulay!"
Great Start to Tokyo!
"My teenage son and I spent our first afternoon in Tokyo with Gulay and we couldn't have been happier. She was lovely and personable and within minutes of being with her, she gave us a tip that made our whole trip so much easier. She answered our questions, shared interesting information and showed us newbie tricks to help navigate the city. She also gave us a recommendation for an area we wouldn't have found on our own (which has been our favorite so far!). Thank you, Gulay, for a wonderful and helpful start to our trip. I just wish we could have have had more time with you!"
fantastic drinks and bites experience
"we had a fantastic time with Alejandro showing us a part of Tokyo we would never have found on our own . The food was great and our food restrictions were easily accommodated . The bars we visited were alot of fun and we got to meet some local people . I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone visiting Tokyo. "
Wonderful sushi and sake tour
"Carlos was an excellent guide taking us to a great traditional sushi place as well as having us taste many different varieties of sake. He also added some extra stops in our tour when we showed interest in seeing a rooftop garden or an amazing view of Shibuya crossing. He made sure to accommodate our food restrictions. I would highly recommend this tour "
Seeing the Sights of Shibuya with Sena
"There’s nothing better than booking a tour and having an even better time than you were expecting. On this tour the reason for that was Sena. We saw a lot of places and experienced food and drink in really cool places. But to top that off, Sena was informative, funny, and made sure that we were having a great time. You just can’t beat that. "

- Anthony Lobo Travel Date:Feb. 19th 2024 Travel Route: Narita Airport Private Transfer Service We used the driving service for our first trip to Japan, and it could not have gone smoother. It was easy to find and meet our driver when we arrived at the airport and when we were picked up to head back to the airport. I would definitely recommend this service for any first timers. Honestly, it took the stress out of traveling to and from the airport and easily accommodated my family of 5. Communication was easy and everyone was extremely helpful/friendly. If you are concerned about using the subway system for the first time, I’d use this driving service to ease your mind.
- Glen Saro Travel Date:Feb. 8th 2024 Travel Route: Hakuba Bus Tour from Tokyo Japan Holiday Transport and Chauffeur. We booked several transfers within Japan, Firstly, from the Airport to our accommodation in Tokyo and then to and from Hakuba. Their buses and bus drivers were always on time and comfortable for our party of 13 people + luggage. Great experience. Driver was very safe and polite. He was professional and able to guide/explain about Hakuba. It was snowy and Safety is the upmost important. Lydia from their office was always polite and she also responded within 24 hours. Trustworthy company with local knowledge.

Culture and customs.
Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.
This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government
Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.
Ancient history
While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.
Pre-modern history
Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.
20th century
It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.
These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.
The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.
Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.
After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.
Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.
Top places to visit in Japan
One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.
If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.
The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.
4. Kanazawa
A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.
5. Hiroshima
Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.
6. Yudanaka
This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).
Geography and environment
Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.
Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.
Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.
Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.
Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.
If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.
What to buy
- Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
- Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
- Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
- Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
- Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.
Festivals and events
If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.
Sapporo Winter Festival
Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.
Hadaka Matsuri
Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.
Fuji Rock Festival
Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?
There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.
What is the weather like in Japan?
- Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
- Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
- Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
- Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .
How safe is Japan?
Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).
Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?
LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.
Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted. Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.
It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.
Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.
Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.
If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.
If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What should I wear in Japan?
Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.
Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.
Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.
The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.
Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.
What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Tour Packages
Tour packages are travel plans, which include some or all of the following: transportation , accommodation , meals, guided tours and more. They can be of great value to both, independent and group travelers.
Tour packages range from individual travel plans, which include only a train ticket and hotel reservation and leave everything else to the traveler, to fully guided tours which cover everything from airfare to English speaking guides and meals. Furthermore, there is a range of special interest tours, such as anime , hot spring , hiking or theme park tours.
Many companies inside and outside of Japan offer tour packages. Because the companies purchase tickets and hotel rooms in large bulks, they are able to offer the packages at costs far below the ones available to individual travelers, making tour packages an option worth considering by travelers of all budgets .

6 Destinations in Japan Where the Locals Love to Go
Get off the tourist track and delve a little deeper into Japan.
Japan is a relatively compact country with an excellent transportation system and a little of everything: mountains and oceans, sun and sand, snow and ice, and forests and cities, all within a short flight or a few hours on the Shinkansen train. Japanese holidays are also short, so most people choose to travel domestically, cramming in as much pleasure as possible in a few days. Japan's big travel periods fall over the new year, when most people head home for the holidays or visit ski resorts or hot spring towns; Golden Week in late April to early May, when top destinations become stuffed with people determined to have a good time fast; and summer holidays in late July and August, when the crowds are of two minds: take advantage of the heat on the beach or retreat to the cooler highlands.
Locals already know what Tokyo Tower looks like, where to get good sushi, and the fleeting feelings that sakura surfaces in us. For those who've grown up with trains and temples, the destinations we're drawn to are much more nuanced, with sights that are tinged with history or part of a gourmet bucket list. And with everything from glaciers to tropical beaches, there's plenty to explore right here in Japan.
Here are six places in Japan where the locals love to travel.
Furano and Biei
City slickers long for open roads, and Hokkaido is a dream driving holiday. In the summer, Furano and Biei are home to Hokkaido's famous lavender and flower fields, and driving through the bucolic emerald and amethyst landscape is sheer pleasure. Stop at a roadside stand for just-plucked corn on the cob (painted with butter or soy sauce — or both) or a creamy soft serve made with fresh Hokkaido milk.
The Daisetsuzan National Park , Japan's largest, abuts these towns and spans 226,000 hectares, including Hokkaido island's highest peak, Mount Asahi. Called Kamui Mintara, or Playground of the Gods, by the indigenous Ainu people, the park offers hiking trails among alpine flowers and sulfuric vents, with sweeping views of untrammeled heights.
In the winter, check out the Hokkaido Powder Belt , which gets an average of eight meters (about 26 feet) of light, dry powder snow each season, with plenty of backcountry options for adventurous skiers and boarders.
Ginzan Onsen
Japan is packed with onsen, or hot springs, due to its nature as an island chain formed by volcanic activity, many still active. Bathing in onsen is practically a natural pastime, with a robust set of rituals for soaking and an entire industry built around hot spring hotels and spas.
Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture is a tiny spa town in a remote mountain cleft that was originally a silver mine. The town's main street is built alongside a stream and lined with handsome wooden inns. In the winter, the streets become thickly blanketed with snow and gas lanterns cast a warm glow. Sulfuric steam rises up and hangs in the air between the footbridges that crisscross the street. It's an arresting sight.
All the inns are atmospheric and most are over 100 years old. Try Notoya Ryokan, designated a "tangible cultural property," which offers a private open-air bath. The main highlights of a hot spring retreat are soaking, eating, and perhaps clopping around town in wooden sandals and yukata (cotton robes provided by the hotel), but the adventurous can explore the defunct silver mine or take in the views at the neighboring Senshinkyo Gorge.
Fuji Five Lakes
While plenty of people do ascend Mount Fuji every year during the short summer climbing season, many are content to simply look upon its symmetrical, snow-topped visage. Fuji is a cultural symbol of Japan, as well as the subject of holy veneration in both Buddhist and Shinto sects. And some of the most remarkable views can be enjoyed from the Fuji Five Lakes area, a collection of lakes that pool around its skirts. From largest to smallest, the lakes are Yamanakako, Kawaguchiko, Motosuko, Saiko, and Shojiko ( ko means lake).
In addition to camping, cycling, swimming, and hiking, you'll also find plenty of charming accommodations, many in the alpine style. Once you've worked up an appetite, sate your hunger by sampling houtou , a local specialty with thick, chewy noodles and tender vegetables simmered in a miso broth. Regular and vegetarian versions are available at Houtou Fudou , a micro chain with three locations around the town of Fujikawaguchiko.
Mount Oyama
While not as famous as Fuji, Mount Oyama was once an essential pilgrimage for Edokko, or people from Edo. A sacred mountain in its own right, Oyama was a multiday walk that up to 200,000 people (the population of Edo at the time was around one million) made during a few weeks over the summer. It was so popular that the route to the mountain was thronged with groups, often sorted by trade or guild, carrying hiking staffs and wearing matching jackets.
Pilgrims' inns, called shukubo , still dot the mountain, and some lodgings host the same groups that have been visiting for hundreds of years. The inns are a place to rest and regroup before making the final ascent to Oyama Afuri Shrine, a site with more than 2,000 years of history. The area is known for its tofu, and an essential part of a visit is fueling up on a multicourse tofu feast at one of the inns, like Tougakubou , where you can also soak in the open-air hot spring after a long day of hiking.
From Tokyo, you'll need a plane to Takamatsu on Shikoku island, then a bus winding inland to Tokushima Prefecture, before arriving in Iya, a remote and mystical valley that feels a world away from the busy capital. Braided vine bridges swing over plunging ravines that glint green and blue, and local legend says that the defeated Heike clan warriors retreated here after their protracted battle with the Genji clan in the 12th century. The precarious bridges, as conventional wisdom goes, could be cut down in a trice, leaving enemies stymied. Buildings are scarce and people even scarcer — in one hamlet, nicknamed Kakashi no Sato , scarecrows outnumber residents and keep the remaining denizens, mostly senior citizens, company. The renovated thatch-roofed farmhouses at Tougenkyo-Iya Mountain Village retain their homespun charm, but have modern conveniences like heated floors and new toilets, along with dramatic views of the surrounding mountains.
Closer to Taiwan than mainland Japan, Okinawa is the country's southernmost prefecture and a perpetual destination for those seeking solace in the mesmerizing ocean depths. Okinawa was the last prefecture to be added to Japan, and before colonization, it was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom. Indigenous Ryukyuans still live here, and have their own languages and cultural traditions that are distinct from the mainland. On Ishigaki island, you can weave visits to Yaeyama Museum and Ishigaki Yaima Village to learn about folk traditions and history with sunbathing, snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs, kayaking along the island's rivers, and diving in Kabira Bay at the famous Manta Scramble. Umicoza Diving School not only offers gear rental, lessons, and certification, but they can also help you in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

I have lived in the US, UK, and India for approximately 20 years, and I’ve also traveled to many other countries. Living abroad for such a long time made me realize Japan’s value and sparked my interest in working as a translator/guide for foreigners. I’m truly passionate about introducing people to historical sites, authentic Japanese culture, and stunning natural spots that may not be widely known to people outside of Japan. There are countless places that I believe people would love. Originally from Nagoya, I cover areas around the city and the Kansai region including Kyoto, Shiga and Mie. I’m here to ensure your trip to Japan becomes an unforgettable memory. Looking forward to meeting you!

Hi! I'm Koichi. I was born in Osaka, I studied in Kyoto when I was a university student. Now I live in Shiga next to Kyoto. I am a national government licensed tour guide. I have been guiding about 160 groups over the past twelve months. I usually guide my customers mainly in Kansai region including Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Kobe and Shiga by public transportation systems. Well, I am curious about Japanese history, especially the history of Japan's ancient times since I was raised next to the world biggest mausoleum of the ancient Emperor called "Nintoku" in Sakai city Osaka which has just become one of the world cultural heritage sites. I dug out some ancient earthen ware vessels around there when I was a primary school student like the adventure archaeologist “Indiana Jones" (It’s our secret!!). That was my hobby. Now, one of my hobbies is outdoor activities such as mountaineering, kayaking, skiing and others. So I would like to take you to some good places where you can enjoy Japanese unique nature. I love to guide foreign visitors from all over the world. I think it is my calling or heavenly given job. Let's go and enjoy together! I hope to see you soon.
I am a nationally licensed tour guide enthusiastic about introducing my hometown, Kyoto, Japan, to tourists and showcasing the finest dining spots, recreational activities, and enjoyable experiences it has to offer. In addition to my role as a lecturer at a local university in Kyoto, I also serve as a tour guide, specializing in food tours, hiking and trekking adventures, and invigorating workout tours, such as jogging. I take great pride in tailoring these experiences to suit the preferences of my guests. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome you to the old capital of Japan!

Hi. my name is yoshihisa. call me "yoshie", please. it means good or o.k. in japanese. i live in joyo city, kyoto prefecture, located just in between kyoto and nara. i was born and raised in iga, mie prefecture. iga is a birthplace of ninja and a renowned haiku poet, matsuo basho. i might be a descendant of ninja. i aim at becoming a linguistic ninja, following a part of basho's lifestyle with the incorporation of seasonal changes into my tours. in addition to visiting famous temples and shrines, i invite you to lesser-known places of historic interest. once in a month i go hiking or mountain climbing with some friends mainly in mountains surrounding kyoto and nara basins. recently i have got intrigued by the charms of buddhist statues, which are manifestations of people's wishes and prayers. i also like izakaya (japanese-style taverns) hopping, tasting delicious dishes and locally brewed sake at reasonable prices. especially i like communicating with people from home and abroad, talking face to face. some of the above-mentioned elements are included in my walking tours. i hope you will discover new aspects of cultural and natural beauty in kansai area through one of my tours which you could never gain otherwise. one of my favorite phrases that come from zen buddhism is ichigo ichie or this meeting-but only once in a lifetime. my interpretation goes this way: this place and this moment never cross again. each and every good encounter, however, lingers on like the sound of a temple bell. won't you explore a deeper world of japanese culture in kyoto, nara and osaka with me .
Hello. My name is Atsuko.I'm a licensed tour guide in Japan. I have lived in Osaka since I was born. I have guided many tourists all over the world as a volunteer for 6 years. I like showing my tourists my favorite places in Japan and talking with them. Osaka, where I was born and raised, is famous for foods, modern and ancient cultures. Nara and Kyoto, which are neighboring places, were ancient capitals in Japan. I'm happy to visit those places with you.
Hello, I’m Makoto (Mac) and I'm a national-licensed tour guide. My previous career as an automotive engineer, gave me the opportunity to learn English and to live in the US, Germany, and England. After I retired, I learned more about the Japanese history especially focusing on Nara and Kyoto to become a historical specialist of the Nara area. I now live in Ikaruga town in Nara prefecture, where the UNESCO World Heritage, Horyuji temple is located. I regularly offer guides on the Fujinoki tumulus, which is located near the Horyuji temple. It contains very interesting Archaeological findings from the end of the Kofun Period. Recently, there are many foreign tourists who come to Japan, and I hope they enjoy learning about the culture and history of Japan. I would like to help tourists have a broader and deeper understanding of the Japanese culture and that is the reason why I decided to become a tour guide to help and support their experience in Japan. Nara is the place where Japan started. The capital was located in Asuka, Fujiwara and Nara before it moved to Kyoto. Therefore, there are many places to visit in Nara to trace the original history of Japan, which I have a depth of knowledge. Let’s explore the roots of Japan together!!

Hello I'm Minori. Kyoto is a popular destination so you might look for deeper place of it. My area is Yamashina, where you pass when traveling Shiga. It has beautiful mountains and water, also its temples and shrines are less crowded. It's a good place for those who have visited famous sites already. I used to work at travel agency so I had chances to company a group tour with a guide and it was an amazing experience that I could see people actually having a fun. I also worked in a hotel and learned how important hospitality is to make guests feel comfortable. I teach kids English so I would like to show them how rewarding and proud it is to show people around our beautiful countries, and English would be helpful in many ways. Let’s go and see beautiful Kyoto and experience some of the best attractions here with me!

We spent a most enjoyable day in Kyoto with Yurico yesterday. Her knowledge was incredible and we truly took a step into the life of the Maiko and Geiko. The Temples and Shrines were fantastic. Yurico was friendly and informative, we would wholeheartedly recommend her tour. Thank you Yurico x
Thank you for your quick and wonderful comment! I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed Kyoto tour around Gion area and Maiko experience. I also had a great time with you and your husband. Kyoto has a long history and deep culture, so please come to Kyoto again. If you visit Kyoto in July, you'll enjoy gorgeous Gion Festival. Gion Festival is held during a month, but there are special days you can enjoy special events. Please refer to below's information. (The popular Yoiyama Festival is held from July 14th to 16th, followed by July 21st to 23rd, during which Komagata lanterns are lit and Gion music is played. The highlight of the festival is the Yamahoko Procession, which takes place on July 17th and July 24th, with the Yamahoko parading through the streets of Miyako.) Many thanks, Yuriko

Frequently asked questions.
Tokyo – where do we even start? This city is like a multi-layered cake, and each slice offers a different flavor. One moment you're standing amidst the ultra-modern skyscrapers, neon lights reflecting off the glass, and the next, you're on one of our Tokyo walking tours , strolling through quiet alleyways where tradition reigns supreme. It's a city where ancient temples sit comfortably next to tech hubs and where kimono-clad folks walk side-by-side with edgy fashionistas.
Now, let's be real. One of the things to know before visiting Tokyo is that to even begin uncovering its layers, you'd need at least 3 days. And that's just scratching the surface. With so much depth and diversity, booking one of our Tokyo tours isn't just a good idea – it's a no-brainer. Without the right Tokyo tour guide services , you might walk past a hidden gem or miss out on a street food stall that serves the best takoyaki you'd ever taste. Tokyo has these nuances, these little secrets, that make it so darn unique and addictive. Trust me, there's no better way to ensure you catch all those subtle details that make Tokyo, well, Tokyo.
First off, our Tokyo private tours , are all about keeping it real. There's a lot of chatter about "authentic experiences" and "hidden gems", but when it comes to tours Tokyo often presents, not everyone truly delivers. We stand out because we're committed to giving you that genuine Tokyo vibe. How? By ditching the script! Every single tour is tailored to your whims and wishes. Whether you're on a mission to find the most mouth-watering ramen or you're drawn to Tokyo's eclectic underground art scene, your City Unscripted tour guide in Tokyo has got you covered.
Here's the cherry on top: our local guides. Picture this – roaming the streets of Tokyo with a friend, a companion who's genuinely in love with their city and excited to show you their cherished spots without any ulterior motives. This isn’t just any Tokyo experience, it’s the City Unscripted experience. We pair you up with a Tokyo tour guide who totally gets what you're about. No formal lectures or tedious explanations – think of it more like two buddies on a Tokyo adventure.
Speaking of recommendations, we don't do backroom deals with cafes or restaurants. When your guide points you to a tucked-away café or a lively izakaya, it’s from the heart – not a business arrangement. And if you're wondering about the best area to stay in Tokyo for first-time visit , our guides have insights on that too, ensuring you get the most from your Tokyo adventure right from the start!
Tokyo is vast, intricate, and brimming with layers waiting to be explored. Navigating it with someone who's got the insider knowledge? Priceless.
Have you ever tried to find your way out of a labyrinth? Well, Tokyo can sometimes feel like one, especially if you’re navigating it on your own. Let’s paint a picture here: Shinjuku Station, for instance, boasts over 200 exits. Yes, you read that right! And that’s just one station in this vast metropolis.
Now, think about the countless amazing restaurants and experiences that Tokyo offers, many of which are located above ground or tucked in the coziest corners of buildings. If you can't read Japanese, there's a chance you'll stroll right past a culinary experience of a lifetime or a shop that sells just the thing you've been dreaming of. And while Tokyo is an international hub, English isn't as widely spoken as you might think, which can sometimes lead to delightful misadventures or, let’s be real, missed opportunities.
The list of things to do in Tokyo can be overwhelming. From street food in Tokyo that promises to tantalize your taste buds, cultural dives into its rich history, to the dazzling array of things to do in Tokyo at night , trying to distill which experiences to prioritize can take longer than your actual trip!
This is where personal tours in Tokyo , like the ones City Unscripted offers, truly shine. Imagine having a friend in Tokyo – someone who knows the ins and outs, the nooks and crannies, the little practicalities that can transform your trip from good to unforgettable. Whether it's guiding you to the best food tour Tokyo has to offer, offering tips on navigating the city, or simply being there to translate a menu, that personal touch can be a game-changer.
Tokyo is vast, vibrant, and brimming with hidden gems. With our private tours in Tokyo , you're not just another tourist – you're an explorer with a local buddy by your side.
With so many reasons to visit Tokyo , you're in for a treat. The city bursts with unique Tokyo experiences , and choosing the best area to stay in Tokyo for a first-time visit can be a game-changer for your trip. But let's tackle the big question: how long should you really spend to capture the city's heart?
If you only have 24 hours in Tokyo , this metropolis will dazzle you! It's like grabbing a quick bite of sushi from the city's famed Tsukiji Outer Market - delicious, but leaving you wanting a fuller feast. Within a day, you'll dance to Tokyo's electrifying rhythm, hit some iconic sights, and if you're lucky, stumble upon a few of those elusive Tokyo hidden gems . But trust me, to dive deep into Tokyo’s multi-faceted soul, you're merely at the starting line.
Got a luxurious 3 days up your sleeve? Now you're in business. With 3 days in Tokyo , tours we recommend will have you navigating between the city's iconic neon-lit streets and serene temple grounds. Dive deep into the juxtaposition of Tokyo's bustling city life and its tranquil pockets of heritage. And for a more grounded experience? Try one of the walking tours Tokyo has to offer. They'll take you through charming backstreets and hidden alleyways, letting you savor the city's pulse. Three days give you a richer palette to paint your Tokyo memories.
Navigating the landscape of Tokyo daily tours can feel as complex as traversing the city's winding streets. So, let's break it down in terms of dollars and sense.
Starting with group tours: they are, without a doubt, the budget-friendly choice. Think of them as the conveyor belt sushi of the tour world – efficient, effective, and they get the job done. Typically, you might spend around $20 to $50 for these. While they'll follow the well-trodden tourist paths and might lack that genuine 'Tokyo feel,' they're an excellent pick if you're looking to save some yen and enjoy meeting fellow travelers.
Then there's the upscale offering of private tours Tokyo provides. Prices here can vary considerably, usually starting from $100 and going upwards to $500 or even more. Remember, not all private tours are crafted equally. Many follow a standard itinerary, offering just a sprinkle of flexibility. But if you're yearning for an authentic experience, then a Tokyo walking tour with us might just be your cup of matcha.
Wondering how much is a tour guide in Tokyo ? Our tours are competitively priced at around $140 per person for a half-day tour, but what sets us apart is the value we deliver. It's more about the experience than the price tag. Our Tokyo tours by locals are fully tailored to your wishes. With City Unscripted, you're not just booking a tour; you're securing an experience, a day out with a new friend passionate about their city. Our hosts love what they do, which means they’re being their authentic selves, giving you a genuine glimpse of Tokyo. There are no preset Tokyo tour packages here; it's all about crafting moments you'll treasure.
To truly experience Tokyo's heartbeat, whether it's the serene spring in Tokyo or the vibrant energy of Tokyo in summer , you need to walk its streets with someone who calls it home. That's where having a City Unscripted tour guide in Tokyo steps in.
Sure, you could hop on a typical tourist trail, but imagine indulging in unique Tokyo food tours , tailored to you and led by someone who's known these flavors since childhood. Or experiencing Tokyo in winter with a guide who knows the coziest spots to warm up? Our local guides adore their city, and there's nothing they love more than sharing its secrets, stories, and soul with you.
Going local isn't just about getting a richer, more authentic experience though. It's also a more sustainable way to explore. By steering clear of those jam-packed tourist spots, you're helping to reduce the wear and tear on Tokyo's most popular sights. Plus, there's the added bonus of supporting local businesses when your guide takes you to their favorite hole-in-the-wall eatery or quaint boutique shop.
With City Unscripted, you're not just getting any old Tokyo day tours – you're getting a friend in the city. Someone who's eager to let you in on the city's best-kept secrets, ensuring you connect deeply with the heart, culture, and pulse of this incredible metropolis. Our passion? Helping you discover new facets of the world, inspiring that lifelong wanderlust, and ensuring every trip, be it during the cherry blossoms of spring or the balmy nights of summer, is filled with authentic, immersive moments that'll stay with you forever.
If you're hopping on a bus or settling into a private car to tour Tokyo, you're likely missing out on half of the city's magic. There's a richness to Tokyo that's best felt up close, where the intricate details, unexpected smells, and ambient sounds become part of your journey. Every hidden alley, every sidewalk vendor, and every burst of laughter from a nearby cafe adds to the vibrant tapestry of the city. Those are the moments and memories you simply can't catch from behind a window.
While Tokyo bicycle tours have their charm and offer a faster pace to cover more ground, nothing beats the authenticity and depth of discovery that walking provides. On foot, it's easier to pivot into a curious-looking shop, engage with locals, or spontaneously decide to try that street food that smells too good to pass up.
When you're walking, you're in the prime position to discover hidden gems Tokyo has sprinkled all over. And with the best private tour guide Tokyo can offer, every step becomes an adventure, every corner turned into a story. Plus, let's not forget the green badge you get for choosing the sustainable path.
No two travelers are alike, and Tokyo, with its myriad of experiences, caters to every kind of wanderlust. Whether you’re a foodie itching to slurp authentic ramen or a history buff eager to walk ancient paths, Tokyo’s got a tour just for you. And if you can't make up your mind, there's always the option of Tokyo multi day tours to delve even deeper. And the beauty? Each tour feels like it's been handpicked just for you.

One Life Adventures

The 10 day tour of Japan was absolutely incredible, and jam-packed with unique experiences (sushi making, temple stay, kendo class) that would have been very difficult for me to find and organize on my own. I really appreciated that One Life Adventures made the trip into an actual adventure and not merely a series of dull excursions to hit all of the classic tourist hot spots. Our guide had real insight to share--getting up at dawn to beat the crowds at the Fushimi-Inari Shrine was clutch--and struck a fine balance between guided segments and free time with optional activities. All ages are welcome too--take it from a 40-something year old. One Life is the best!
My recent 14 day trip to Japan was absolutely amazing. The trip not just covered all the must-see spots, but also included experiences like tea ceremony, Kendo and Sushi making classes and experiencing tranquil gardens. Our tour guide Alyssa made sure that everything ran smoothly, and this made our trip stress free. I will definitely choose One Life again.

Tours between Osaka and Tokyo were good. There were no organized tours of Osaka and Tokyo so I did them on my own. Hotels were good though I wish the Tokyo Hotel was closer to the City center. The brochure showed Toyota City is included but we were there on a Monday when they are usually closed. The bus was comfortable but miss not having Wi-fi and charging outlets. The Hiroshima and Kyoto were good tours but both were optional tours that we paid extra for.
It was a very nice trip, with little, insignificant hiccup with accommodation in Osaka, which was resolved quite quickly. Yoyo, our guide, was funny and very patient with all of us. Definitely will recommend the tour to first time visitors to Japan.

Very interesting experience. Very good trip, well balanced between mandatory and optional activities.

Accomodation in Takayama was so disappointing. Too far out from town, the futons were not traditional, just very thin foam. Intrepid, your standards have slipped. The guide Hiro was good but the fact that she had 2 trainee guides with the tour, distracted her. Generally not satisfied with our experience. P.R.
Fantastic trip of a lifetime! Amazing from start to finish. Itinerary was great and had a good balance with free time to explore what Japan had to offer. Shout out to our guide Takumi who was fantastic to be around and made this trip very special!

The tour organizer has very, very poor communication, planning and organizational skills. The final itinerary was sent 2weeks before the start of the actual trip, I have to remind them by email to send it to us asap as they promised it will be sent a month before the actual trip. We where told initially that they will arrange our airport transfer and have told them we will be arriving two days before the actual tour, but after days before we've been told that we have to do it ourselves. The two hotel from original itinerary was changed on the final one provided so it caused some confusion on our side. Their representative met with us on the first day of the tour to sort out our JR. Pass and it took 2hours of our precious time to do this, we almost missed the pre-booked museum that day. Their hotel choices where below average, first one is in Ikeburo with bfast included but only seaweed soup and toast where given, again we have to travel to Shinjuku station to get the train to Hakone (very inconvenient), they could just chosen a hotel in Shinjuku instead. In the morning next we arrived in Hakone, we supposed to drop off our luggage at the next hotel to free our hands to roam around the area and found that it was closed and nobody around to asked for information so we have to dragged our luggage back to the station to put them in the locker. I have contacted their representative but he even asked me the name of the hotel (unbelievable, how could he not know all this details). They replied around 2.30ish pm and was told it was unmanned and we where given a PIN number to access, again they should have known this important details and informed us even the day/night before the trip. The next day we travelled again to Kyoto, to avoid the hassle of dropping off our luggage palarva we've decided to use the coin lockers at the station. It was late in the afternoon when we arrived at the hotel the receptionist asked us to pay City Tax 1200yen for 3nights stay, this again we where unaware of. I messaged the representative and to the people on the WhatsApp group and question about this city tax, they said they will refund me with the money so no choice I have paid.Again breakfast was included but only varieties of bread available and some butter and jams and coffee or water. Unsatisfied again. On arrival at Hiroshima after 3days this is where the confusion happens as the name of the hotel was different on the final itinerary they've sent us (this was our mistake we owned this as we didn't checked the final itinerary). We've only stayed at the Flex hotel (supposed to be two nights) for a night as wanting to have more time in Osaka instead (paid privately for one night
I recently took a trip to Japan and visited Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka, and I can confidently say it was one of the best travel experiences I've ever had! The tours were fantastic and provided great insights into each city's culture and history. The transportation was also very reliable, making it easy to get around from one city to another. The accommodations were top-notch, with comfortable rooms and excellent service. I highly recommend booking a trip to Japan with Bamba and experiencing all that it has to offer!
Discovi Travel
- Excellent - 23 reviews for Japan tours
Much improved. I have been to Japan twice now both times with Discovi and this was by far the best trip I could have imagined. There are new guides all local Japanese every single one of them is amazing (Shinya was exceptional!) and a brand new Hotel not a hostal like before but even the hostal option is better this time. But the hotel has breakfast and it was AMAZING a mix of Japanese and American food. Great start to the day. And the PUB CRAWL!! Crazy night so much fun, thanks Discovi!
I expected this to be more touristy but I WAS SO SHOCKED This is a local tour! I felt like we had the nicest guides all Japanese and they knew so many little spots that you would never find yourself! Take this tour if you want to see the real Japan

Very disappointing, don’t book this if you want English, mostly Spanish. First hotel was substandard room although the hotel was nice our room was smelly and very old, mattress so old and hard it was difficult to sleep. 40 minute queue for breakfast even at 6.10 am. Hotel in Osaka was ridiculous, couldn’t get down in the elevator , as a result we were an hour late and missed a major sight. Given a glass of cheap wine to compensate!! Hardly
The overall experience was good . The itinerary was appropriate and well planned. The hotels were of a good standard. However, the quality of the guides varied throughout the tour.

This tour was fantastic. The tour owners are foodies so we were told and it showed. The tour itself was terrific and well organized but on top of that the restaurant and other food choices etc. were just stellar.
I toured with my sons, aged 18 and 21. The whole tour was perfectly paced. Comfortable accommodations in great locations including a couple nights in traditional rooms. Outstanding food every meal. Visited temples, shrines and castles everyone needs to see. Even touristy-experiences (rickshaw ride, silk dyeing, dressing in kimono in Iyashi No Sato, which we were reluctant to remove!) were entertaining. We were not prepared for the incredible awe of the Itchiku Kubota museum. We took advantage of onsens whenever we could. We watched the sun rise on Mt Fuji and visited Kiyomizu Temple in perfect light, before the crowds arrived. I took private time to visit the Hoshun-in bonsai garden at Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto and had the entire garden to myself for an hour. Our guide Eriko was extremely well-versed, adaptable and gracious. We learned so much about the Sengoku and Edo periods, as well as the Meiji restoration and even 20th/21st century Japan. For a first introduction to this fascinating and ancient part of the world this tour far exceeded my expectations. Supera found all the right touches and class without any wasted effort. I couldn’t recommend this tour higher - extremely well done from start to finish.

Couldn't have asked for a better trip to Japan. Such an amazing tour, guide and group of people. I love how everything is planned and included but you also have the time needed to make the trip your own. Intro are such an easy company to use, can always get in touch with someone and alter your trip if you need to.
Had the best time on this trip! Everything ran smoothly and was organised which is exactly what I wanted, whilst seeing the best bits of the country and doing some amazing activities. Zoe was fantastic and lead us round like a pro, she was knowledgeable and fun. Would definitely recommend this tour!
On The Go Tours
- Excellent - 2,951 reviews for Japan tours
First tour guide for the first 8 days was great, second tour guide tried hard and seemed lovely as a person, but she was disorganized, oblivious of who was or wasn’t following her, was unaware of where she was going at times, and just didn’t seem like she knew how to do the job. I’m not the only one who felt that way. Your pre trip support was excellent and accommodating, but having taken a number of tours with other organizations, Rick steve’s in Europe, you charge a lot when offering very little. I will not recommend your tour group to anyone, and will most likely discourage others from taking one.
Genuinely fast paced very active tour with moderate quality hotels and well priced
Indus Travels
- Excellent - 252 reviews for Japan tours
A really well organised trip with very good guides in Japan. From the outset the communication from Indus was excellent. We loved the "Indus app" that gave us al the info we needed for our trip. We were fortunate that we had a small group of 12 people only so we had a wonderful one on one experience with each of our guides in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka.
World Expeditions
- Excellent - 256 reviews for Japan tours
Our only gripe was the long bus trips involved at the beginning and end of each day. Kohei, our guide, was outstanding. He let us experience many aspects of Japanese culture, and he became as much a friend as a guide.
My husband and I went on the World Expiditions Back Roads of Japan Tour last year, and were extremely disappointed in the quality of guide provided. The guide had never done the tour, had never even been to half the places on the itinerary and was a complete loose cannon, on two occasions taking elicit drugs and drinking to the point of being unable to function. When the entire tour group sent complaints following the completion of the tour, World Expeditions were elusive and largely uncommunicative, and offered us all an insulting refund of about 12% of our tour cost. Needless to say, we will not be taking or recommending World Expeditions tours in the future.
- Excellent - 27 reviews for Japan tours
Overall we were pleased with the trip. The hotel in Tokyo was quite far away from the city center but had wonderful insensitive available and a good breakfast. Our group was only 25 people so the bus was comfortable and we got around pretty quickly. Our Guide Sumi was excellent and helpful although there were a few problems understand. She made general recommendations for restaurant areas and it was fun to find and sample the food. The city tours were additional but by the end we felt comfortable taking trains and exploring on our own.
The service provided by Intertrips is very professional and considerable. It was an amazing experience. Enjoy this tour so much and I will definitely come back and recommend this tour to my friends and family.
The Dragon Trip
- Excellent - 313 reviews for Japan tours
The tour was fine, like with all group tours you do things you don't want to, you don't do things you want to do and you spend too much or not enough time in places. The accommodation was fine except for Kamakura which was not great. The guide Sora was fantastic made the trip a lot better. The reason for two stars (I would have given two and a half if I could) is that as a shy solo traveller I joined a group tour because I know I miss out on things by being shy. While I understand it is nothing to do with the dragons trip, I felt left out of the group ( Sora was great but we had a big group). Everyone else in the group broke up into smaller groups we we went to lunch or the tour ended for the day and I was left by myself. It was a bit lonely and depressing seeing everyone else having fun in the group chat and feeling left out. As a result I would not recommend a group tour to other shy solo travellers, it felt as I got half a holiday compared with the rest of the group. If you go with someone or you are an extrovert you will probably have a great time.
The Korea aspect of the tour was incredible, I would rate it 5 stars- CheongAn and Julian were amazing tour guides helping us all fall in love with the country. Japan felt very disorganised and fell flat.

ToursByLocals is GREAT for Japan.
ToursBylocals is GREAT for Japan. Our guides spoke perfect English and took us where we wanted to go and knew some "cool local spots" as well. Tokyo: Akemi Ito was professional and accommodated all of our requests and knew the cool places to go. She helped arrange a private van because there was 6 of us + her and my parents are elderly and can't walk as much. She took us to a local soba place (cool, hip, insider knowledge). She took us to harajuku but then also knew a backstreet cool shopping area (my teen loved B-side Label, sticker shop). We also went to Itoya (cool 7 story stationery store) and Tokyo Noble (umbrella shop) my request.
Maybe we were just lucky to have a fantastic tour guide in Tokyo; maybe all their guides are fantastic. The guide holds a professional guide certificate. He was very well prepared. He explained to us the brief history of Tokyo at the beginning and made references to the historical periods during the tour. Our daughter was interested in teenage stuff and manga/anime culture. Our guide, with the usual Japanese humbleness, told us that he is not an expert in the field, but then did not fail to take us to the best places considering teenage culture. He managed to become good friends with our daughter in a very short time. Highly recommended
We had a private full day tour in Tokyo with Yoshi. It was for me and my 3 children ages 12, 9 and 7 years. Yoshi was brilliant, very knowledgeable and tailored the day for the children which is what we had wanted. We visited a beautiful floral shrine (only in bloom during April) as well as going to hedgehog cafe and shibuya crossing. We spent time shopping on some of the famous streets - rainbow candyfloss, candy stores, sanrio world, pokemon centre and more. Would definitely recommend for those with children that want to do something different. The children we happy for the whole day!
We had a wonderful day with Masa exploring the highlights of Tokyo and highly recommend choosing him for your next tour. Masa communicated all the information very clearly and provided extremely insightful information, helping us to maximize our time here in Tokyo. His patience and knowledge is extremely appreciated and he was mindful to our every need and interest. Could not recommend him enough!
Junko is a wonderful, cultivated and knowledgeable guide. We really enjoyed our tour of Kamakura in her company; we would have never seen the town as we did without her help. We discussed history and tradition of her country on the train trip, and she was so kind that she accompanied us afterwards to buy a camera strap near the station. We highly recommend her.
We had the absolute pleasure of having Sonoe take us to Harajuku today. First she guided us through the labyrinth of train systems in Japan. Then we had both a fun and cultural tour of Harajuku. She kept us and our 5 year old daughter well entertained - and we all know how tough it is to keep a 5 year old happy! She was professional yet friendly, funny and happy to help us with anything. I would highly recommend Sonoe to anyone who wants a great day out in Tokyo. Totally worth the cost.

A cruise to Japan is an excellent way to visit multiple regions on one trip and can take you to some undiscovered places. If you're planning ahead for Japan's sell-out cruises, you'll want to check out Good Housekeeping's incredible spring 2025 sailing during the cherry blossom season . It's perfect for getting to know the lesser-known, underrated places, such as Niigata and Toyama.

Check out our favourite Japanese destinations below and visit the Japan National Tourism Organization website for more ideas on places to go.
The first stop for many foreign tourists is Japan's vibrant capital and it's not hard to see why. The world’s most populous metropolis, Tokyo offers tradition and innovation, and unlimited opportunities to eat, shop and explore.
Located on Tokyo Bay in the Kanto region of Honshu, Tokyo is known for its fashion and shopping, from the trendy shopping districts of Harajuku and Shibuya, to the luxury flagships of Ginza. Want to know where to go? Shinjuku is a thriving business district; a mix of gleaming skyscrapers and atmospheric back streets with tiny bars. Asakusa is the heart of Tokyo’s downtown, with ancient temples and traditional stores.
Tokyo is a foodie's paradise too, with more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city in the world, along with hundreds of cheap and delicious ramen shops. You'll want to explore Tokyo's dizzying array of restaurant and dining options, from themed cafés to haute cuisine.

Japan’s second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo, Osaka is renowned as one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the country. It's only a short shinkansen ride from Tokyo, making it a great place to visit in Japan if the capital city is your base. Visitors can step off the bullet train and into a bright and enticing city. Osaka Castle is a must-visit and home to beautiful grounds you can wander through, especially during the cherry blossom season when the spectacular blooms appear.
You'll want to explore other areas in the city too, including the neon lights of Dotombori Bridge and Osaka’s Minami area. Foodies can indulge in the famous culinary delights found in neighbourhoods such as Tenma and Ura Namba. Okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake made with shredded cabbage, flour, egg and dashi is either cooked at the table for diners or left for you to cook yourself.

Another highlight is the bustling new city centre, Minato Mirai, which sits along the water. There's something for everyone here, from shopping centres and an amusement park to museums and relaxing hot spring baths.

The Japanese Alps are a series of spectacular mountain ranges in central Honshu, which are perfect for those who wish to escape the buzz of the country's most popular cities. KYOTO HOTELS
The vibrant city of Hiroshima has a complicated history, great food and friendly locals. While it's probably most famous for being devastated by a nuclear attack during World War II, Hiroshima as a city promotes peace and understanding.
Every year on 6 August, a memorial service is held to commemorate the victims of the 1945 attack. Thousands write messages of peace on paper lanterns that are lit at sunset to float down the river past the iconic remains of the Atomic Bomb Dome.
During a visit, be sure to check out the Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Dome. You should also taste Hiroshima's version of okomiyaki, a local delicacy. Another highlight is going to nearby Miyajima to see its deer and picturesque floating shrine.
Explore Hiroshima during a 2025 spring-time cruise to Japan, where you'll have time to visit the war memorials, shrines and temples.
HIROSHIMA HOTELS
Japan's Tohoku region is home to unspoiled rural landscapes and historical treasures. This northeastern wilderness is a huge region encompassing six rural prefectures that boast custom and heritage. The devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck in 2011 brought out the resilient nature of Tohoku's people, and local passion and pride are putting the area back on its feet.
There's a lot to be proud of, too – dramatic landscapes, history-rich sites, craft sake and a host of outdoor activities like rafting, hiking and skiing.
During a trip to the region, you can enjoy the explosive sound, colour and drama of the Aomori Nebuta Festival in summer. Or wander the temples, gardens and archeological sites of World Heritage-listed Hiraizumi in Iwate.
Don't miss an adventure along Hachinohe's section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail and foodies will want to taste the sweet cherries of Yamagata and the juicy peaches of Fukushima.
TOHOKU HOTELS
Shikoku might be the smallest of Japan's four main islands, but there are plenty of natural and culture sites to explore. Traditionally remote, Shikoku is now easy to access from Honshu.
The island offers picturesque coastline on the glittering Seto Inland Sea, legendary udon noodles and picture-perfect onsen. Its stunning Iya Valley, Pacific coastline and free-flowing rivers are best explored on hiking, kayaking and surfboarding adventures.
While here, you can sample the famous udon noodles of Kagawa, take the first steps of the 88 Temple Pilgrimage at temple number one, Ryozenji, in Tokushima, and relax in the hot waters of Dogo Onsen.
SHIKOKU HOTELS
The island of Hokkaido is a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding in winter, thanks to top resorts like Niseko, Rusutsu and Furano. Sapporo, its main city, is also famous for beer, ramen and the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. It's not all about winter fun here, though.
Hokkaido’s mild summers also provide relief from Japan’s humidity, and offer ideal conditions for hiking and exploring the many national parks. Much of Hokkaido is wild and unspoiled, with hot springs and volcanic lakes, so you're never too far from nature.
While here, explore the culture and traditions of the indigenous Ainu people at Lake Akan, and journey to the Shiretoko Peninsula to see free-roaming brown bears, foxes and deer. Visiting in the summer? Everyone will be dazzled by the rolling hills of Furano's lavender farms, while foodies will love dining on fresh seafood including succulent crab, salmon and fresh sushi in Hokkaido, too.
Get to know Hokkaido on Good Housekeeping's 2025 cruise, which stops in the city of Hakodate, which is overlooked by the 334-metre Mount Hakodate.
HOKKAIDO HOTELS
We love the distinct seasons in the Toyama region. It lies around two hours north of Tokyo, blanketed by snow in winter and blooming with cherry blossoms in spring. While Toyoma City is renowned for its fresh seafood, the wider region is particularly lovely. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given it's surrounded by rushing rivers and lush mountains.
This beautiful pocket of Japanese countryside is home to the UNESCO-listed area of Gokayama, which comprises the two villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, known for their carefully preserved thatched buildings called gassho-zukuri . The roofs are designed to resemble the hands of Buddhist monks’ pressed together in prayer. In winter, the snow-covered gassho-zukurie take on the look of a magical, fairy tale scene.
Join a Japanese cruise departing in spring 2025, and you’ll call at Toyama as the cherry blossom emerges. On an excursion, you can make the scenic hour-long journey from the cruise terminal to Gokayama, passing through the Nanto area of Toyama, where the Shogawa River and Oyabegawa rapids flow.
VISIT TOYAMA ON A 2025 JAPAN CRUISE
A 2024 extension to Japan's bullet train network makes access to a beautiful region deep in the mountains of the Fukui Prefecture much more accessible for visitors. It offers the chance to visit locations where you can join in with traditional rituals and learn more about Japanese culture in more remote pockets of the country.
The new train journey whisks visitors to locations like Eiheiji, where you’ll find one of the main temples of Zen Buddhism, founded in 1244. It’s a spiritual place amid mountainous scenery and ancient woodland, and guests are invited to join the practice. On departure, guests are presented with a goshuin , a traditional document written in exquisite Japanese calligraphy to certify their visit.
Next to the temple is the Zen Village, where you'll find the beautiful Hakujukan hotel, a sustainably built ryokan. As part of their stay, guests can partake in Zen meditation, known as zazen , before soaking in an open-air bath.
Koyasan, also known as Mount Koya, is thought by many as the most sacred place in all of Japan. Home to the centre of Shingon Buddhism, a sect that was brought to Japan in 805 by Kobo Daishi, one of the country's most prominent Buddhist monks, this mountain settlement comprises over 100 monasteries and temples.
The Shingon headquarters sit within the Kongobuji temple, which is open to visitors. Here you can learn about how Daishi founded the settlement and visit peaceful Banryutei Rock Garden, Japan’s largest rock garden.
Thanks to its verdant peaks and winding valleys, Koyasan is a popular place for hiking and is the starting point for the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a holy route that stretches roughly 750 miles and takes in 88 temples.
Koyasan is easy to access from Osaka via train for a day trip, but stay the night in shukubo (traditional temple lodgings) and you can enjoy a more immersive experience, interacting with monks and sampling their vegetarian cooking.
Visit serene Kōyasan part of Good Housekeeping's 13-day Japan tour.

10 Day Japan Tours View Tours
10 day japan tours.
Take a ten-day tour of Japan filled with ancient history, enchanting local culture, and stunning nature scenes. Starting with the sights and experiences in vibrant Tokyo. Japan’s capital has so much to see and do, travelers could easily spend their whole vacation appreciating its grand monuments, fascinating museums, top-tier cuisine, and nonstop nightlife. The charms of Tokyo include both ancient and modern sights - popular landmarks such as Asakusa Sensoji Temple, Tokyo Skytree, Shibuya’s Scramble Crossing, and Takeshita Street in Harajuku. Beauteous Hakone beckons travelers to take a break from Tokyo’s hustle and refresh themselves in peaceful scenes filled with verdant mountains and gorgeous lakes. The primordial volcanic caldera of Owakudani is particularly captivating, with boiling hot springs and rivers venting steam that envelops the rocky landscape in a mysterious air. Iconic Mount Fuji is nearby, its majestic cone making for an awe-inspiring view, with fair- weather days beckoning travelers to experience its charming beauty up close. Travel from there to Kyoto, at one time the imperial capital of Japan for over a thousand years, a land of spectacular old-fashioned temples and charming landscape gardens. The shimmering Golden Pavilion crowned with a dainty phoenix, Kiyomizu Temple with its dramatic balcony, and the thousand red gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine are some of the city’s top must-sees. Get immersed in the local culture by trying on a kimono at a local shop in the Gion District, or visit a teahouse to experience the time-honored Tea Ceremony. Nara City is a convenient day trip from Kyoto, known for the impressive wooden hall of Todaiji and nearby Nara Park with its herd of curious and friendly wild deer. Metropolitan Osaka is stylish and eccentric, displaying its quirky humor along with the wide variety of street cuisine in the Dotonbori canal district. Magnificent Osaka Castle is not to be missed; the iconic fortress was built by legendary samurai general Toyotomi Hideyoshi and is a quintessential Japanese medieval fortress. Finish the tour at Hiroshima, the tranquil beauty of the Peace Memorial Park inspiring travelers to contemplate a world without war. Nearby is Miyajima Island, home to splendid Itsukushima Shrine. It’s large vermillion torii gate stands out over the sea, appearing to float over the waves at high tide.
