Jim Rome is relaunching his World Tour and the first stop is Buffalo, NY. The iconic CBS Sports Radio host will perform live at Shea’s Performing Arts Center Saturday, Apr. 11.

It’s not the first time Rome has been on tour giving listeners a first-hand look at “The Jungle,” it’s also not the first time the tour went to Buffalo. So far the only currently announced stop for the event is Buffalo, but past tours have included cities that are Rome affiliates such as Sacramento, Houston, Detroit, Denver, Cleveland and many more.

Rome was previously heard daily on WGR 550 until the station went all local for their weekday lineup in 2016. Entercom’s ESPN 1520 in Buffalo is still listed as a Rome affiliate, making him the only non-ESPN show on the station.

The Los Angeles native began his radio career in the 1980’s while attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, for Communications.  In 1996,  The Jim Rome Show  became nationally syndicated and is currently one of the most important pieces of the CBS Sports brand.  Rome’s radio show is heard on more than 200 affiliates around the country, in addition to being simulcast on television via CBS Sports Network.

The live show has drawn as many as 10,000 fans in the past. April’s show in Buffalo will be Rome’s first tour stop since 2004. Interacting with the crowd while offering sports related guests and activities, the tour is a good way for listeners to celebrate the iconic sports personality who earned a trip to the Radio Hall of Fame last November.

Cody Tapp: Paying for Kansas City Royals TV ‘Just Seemed More Convenient’ in the Past

“I thought I am doing a 10-minute or 12-minute radio hit, and I’m doing 32 minutes on a podcast.”

' data-src=

670 The Score host Danny Parkins accepted an invitation to go on with 92.3 The Fan’s The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima , however, there was a slight miscommunication. While Lima had previously texted Parkins about his new book coming out and having him as a guest “on the show,” when Parkins connected for the interview, he realized he was on the after-show podcast and host Ken Carman was not going to be on with them.

As Parkins explained to his co-host Matt Spiegel, “I have been doing a lot of book promotion recently…basically, their morning show, Carman and Lima has a post-show podcast that I went on and I thought I was going on the show, but then it [also] opened their show today.”

Then, 670 The Score played the clip from 92.3 The Fan with them talking about Parkins.

As the show in Cleveland began, Ken Carman asked, “You had Danny Parkins on to talk trash about me apparently?”

Lima replied, “…I will be honest with you, Danny Parkins is one of these highfalutin Syracuse, Nick Wright, Andrew Fillipponi people, right…they only look out for each other, they only care about each other’s success. While me and you, we’re the ones getting all the headlines. It’s every day. Barrett Sports Media, the trades, the Talkers Heavy 500…it’s us every single time…So, Danny Parkins wrote a book about Division III basketball…”

“Well finally somebody wrote it,” Carman exclaimed. “Bill Simmons wrote The Big Book of Basketball, and Danny wrote the Big Book of Division III basketball, ok.”

Lima went on to explain he thought it would be an interesting topic since they talk on their show about where certain Browns front office people come from and that some of the subjects in the book have a connection to Cleveland, such as Mike Fratello.

Lima said about Parkins, “He wasn’t happy he was coming on the podcast to begin with and then he wasn’t necessarily happy that you were not on the podcast.

“He wanted to come on the regular show?” Carman asked. “Is there a guy driving down 480 now who wants to hear about Division III basketball?…He shouldn’t take it as some sort of slight about the podcast. Thats where we can get a bit wonkier and do a deep dive – he should be happy that he is on the podcast.”

Parkins and Spiegel played that audio on their show in Chicago and Parkins reaction was to say, “These guys are such frauds. And I love their show, they’re both really good.”

He went on to explain that he had received a text from Lima back at the end of January and Lima had said they would have Parkins on to talk about the book when it was coming out. He then said he got a short-notice invitation from Lima to do something in an hour and fifteen minutes and said the topics would include the book, NBA talk as well as NFL draft talk. Parkins didn’t think about the fact that the radio show would be over at the time Lima had asked about.

“We had talked about going on the show. Not the podcast. The show. The highly rated highly successful…show…I was pissed that I was on a podcast and not a radio show. I thought I am doing a 10-minute or 12-minute radio hit, and I’m doing 32 minutes on a podcast. It’s ridiculous…I’m trying to sell a book. How many people do you think listen to their new podcast compared to their radio show which is in morning drive?”

As Parkins finished, he summed it all up by saying, “I wasn’t planning on insulting Cleveland on their show. But when they bait and switch me and I’m on a podcast and not a show and it’s 35 minutes long…But they have a great show, very talented guys. I would have loved to have been on it.”

“I’m telling you, the excuse of, ‘I can’t watch them. They’re not available to me,’ I just think, like you do, is just factually untrue.”

The Kansas City Royals have been off to a hot start on the 2024 MLB regular season, with the team attaining victories in seven of its first 11 games played. Young phenoms such as Bobby Witt Jr. and established veterans including Salvador Perez are showcasing their talents as they look to help the Royals attain a playoff berth for the first time in nine years.

Baseball fans can watch the Royals through Bally Sports Kansas City, the regional sports network responsible for the team’s local television broadcasts. Additionally, fans are able to subscribe to Bally Sports+, the network’s direct-to-consumer option, where fans can view the games without a television provider. There are various kinds of subscriptions from which to select, something that encapsulated the recent discussion on the 610 Sports Radio midday program Cody & Gold .

Co-host Alex Gold revealed that he has been annoyed by people discerning how others can be excited about the Royals since they cannot watch the team. This proposition, he stated, is false because there are numerous ways to consume the live game broadcasts in real time. One of them is through the Audacy app, which Gold noted is free to download and includes Royals broadcasts on 610 Sports Radio, the team’s flagship radio home. For those who want to see a video feed of the game though, they will need to utilize a different method.

“You may not like the app – and I’ll admit the app sucks; it just does,” Gold said. “The Bally app sucks – it’s not a great app, it crashes. It’s not great… but the idea that you can’t watch the Royals though is laughable. It is just as accessible as any other ballclub. Yeah, it’s not 2005 where you can just flip on the TV. I wish it was on YouTube TV as well; I’m right there with all of you guys.”

Gold asserted that it is a choice whether or not to watch the Royals, leading his co-host Cody Tapp to share that he also argues with people about the accessibility to the games. Consumers can subscribe to Bally Sports+ for $20 a month, a pricepoint he states can be cut in half if you are able to find someone with whom to split the plan. Gold conveyed that you can share the password with one other person to access two concurrent streams. Not being able to do that, he said, equates to someone complaining that they cannot watch Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ when, in reality, it is available on an OTT streaming platform rather than traditional linear television.

“It’s just because back in the day, you were able to just flip on the TV and watch, and that’s just not reality of how streaming and how baseball and how sports in general are going, and the NFL is the exception,” Gold replied. “The NFL’s the one exception with live sports that you can still flip on – and it’s trending in the other direction, hence the reaction to the playoff games being on Peacock if you weren’t in Kansas City.”

Gold admitted that the Bally Sports app cut out two times when he was watching the Royals game on Tuesday night, which ended with a walk-off victory over the Houston Astros. It began to work when he re-entered the app after each impediment, allowing him to ultimately be able to watch the game. Tapp added that MLB.TV allows Royals fans to watch the games if they are out-of-market and costs “about the same depending on where you buy it.” The discontent towards the situation, however, is somewhat of a matter of perspective as the media landscape continues to evolve.

“You were paying for it still before – it just seemed more convenient,” Tapp said. “It was built into your cable, but you were paying something for it, and we all went to this chop-down version where essentially we’re paying the same amount as cable, I get it, for like seven different streaming apps.”

Tapp suggested that if fans want to watch the Royals play baseball throughout the season, it would be advisable to cut out another streaming app in the time being. One hundred sixty-one of the Royals’ 162 regular-season games during the 2024 campaign with the primary broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Ryan Lefebvre and analyst Rex Hudler.

“Like, ‘No Netflix for the Summer,’ and instead you get Royals baseball,” Tapp stated. “I don’t think that that’s crazy to me. ‘No Peacock, no Prime,’ whatever one you pay for monthly that you don’t think you’re going to use as much in the summer because you’re watching the Royals, do that or just don’t watch. But I’m telling you, the excuse of, ‘I can’t watch them. They’re not available to me,’ I just think, like you do, is just factually untrue.”

RJ Choppy: “Next Year, the Women’s Tournament Will Not Have 10 Million People Watching”

It was Caitlin Clark. South Carolina is unwatchable. LSU, outside of Angel Reese, unwatchable. Catiltin Clark, not unwatchable, very watchable.

RJ Choppy

For the first time in its 42-year history, more people watched the women’s NCAA basketball final than watched the men’s final. Shan & RJ hosts Shan Shariff, RJ Choppy and Bobby Belt talked about the topic this morning on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

“The ratings came out for the Final Four, both men and women,” Choppy said. “Obviously the women had 18.7 million. The UConn-Alabama Final Four game had 14.8 million…the final game had just under 15 million. They didn’t win. You don’t win when you are on network TV and then the other one is on TBS, a network that has no people just there on it. This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The whole notion that the question is being asked…is the men’s game in trouble?…The men’s game destroyed the NBA finals and Major League Baseball’s World Series. The men’s game is just fine.”

Shariff added, “This doesn’t have to be an indictment on men’s basketball.”

“This is not men versus women,” Choppy said. “Next year, the women’s tournament will not have 10 million people watching it. It was Caitlin Clark. South Carolina is unwatchable. LSU, outside of Angel Reese, unwatchable. Cailtin Clark, not unwatchable, very watchable.”

Shariff looked at the big picture and said, “The fact that we are even having a discussion like this is a huge win for the women. Never thought we would ever have this conversation.”

Booby Belt mentioned the start time of the men’s game being an issue, as the fan bases of the two teams, UConn and Purdue, are in the eastern time zone where the game started around 9:30 p.m. Belt also pointed out that ABC, which showed the women’s final, reaches 305 million homes, whereas TBS reaches 71 million.

“You still had to make the choice to watch women’s basketball…it’s a huge win,” said Shariff.

Belt then talked about the narrative of the women’s game being close to the same popularity as the men’s game in the overall scheme of things. “It’s intellectually dishonest that people are trying to push it as ‘look at this, it’s just as popular.’ Ok then why is the revenue that the Final Four brought in for the women’s game $25 million and the men’s was $200 million…just talk about them within their own context and stop trying to make it so much about ‘women beat the men’…they want it to be the narrative so bad and that’s what I think is a little silly.”

 Round Rock Express

Jim Rome World Tour comes to The Dell Diamond

August 4, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) Round Rock Express News Release

Nolan Ryan and Lance Armstrong are a few of the local celebrities expected to appear onstage with Rome for the special non-radio stage show that starts at 2 p.m. Rome, who has made 31 similar appearances across the nation, is making his third tour stop this year. The host for the event is Sports Radio 1300am – The Zone.

Following the one and half hour show will be the Baseball & Blues Charity Concert, featuring Doyle Bramhall and Hollis Gilmore. The free concert and accompanying silent auction will benefit needy Negro League baseball veterans. The Express and the No Bats Baseball Club are hosting the concert and benefit auction.

Perhaps the most respected voice in the world of sports broadcasting, Jim Rome is the leading opinion-maker of his generation. As host of the nation’s premiere sports radio talk show, as well as his weekly television program on ESPN, Rome is an important arbiter in a chorus of sports media sycophants. Known for his aggressive, informed, rapid-fire dialogue, Jim has established himself as the top choice of athletes and fans when it is time to know what is going on beyond the scoreboard.

Rome’s nationally syndicated radio program, The Jim Rome Show, a.k.a. The Jungle, airs on more than 200 radio stations each weekday (11:00 am – 2:00 pm cst) and boasts more than 2.5 million listeners. But these are no ordinary listeners; they are a legion of fans known as “The Clones” who live and breathe for Jim Rome’s “take” on the day’s larger issues of sport. It is his departure from conventional sports commentary that has resulted in Rome’s unique dialogue with his listeners.

For more information on Tour Stop #32 or how you can get tickets go to http://www.sportsradio1300.com or http://www.jimrome.com.

Previous Jim Rome World Tour Stops have included: Detroit, Cincinnati, Madison, Sacramento, Denver, Kansas City, Buffalo, Phoenix, Oakland, Houston, Cleveland, Tampa, Portland, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Anaheim, Salt Lake City, Green Bay, San Diego, and Omaha.

The Jim Rome World Tour Stop #32 at The Dell Diamond starts with a traditional Rome Tour Stop tailgate party at 10:00 am. Gates to the stadium will open at 12:30 and the show starts at 2:00 pm.

The Baseball & Blues Concert will immediately follow the Rome Tour Stop at approximately 4:00 pm. The concert, which is free to the public, is a benefit for Negro league veterans in need.

For 40 years, baseball’s Negro Leagues existed as an outlet for a generation of players who were barred from Major League Baseball. Instead of competing with and against Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, the players became stars in their own right. Cool Papa Bell, Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson proved their skills against Negro League competition and – in a variety of exhibitions – the best that the Major League’s had to offer too. The Hall of Fame agrees as 24 former Negro League players now have plaques in Cooperstown.

However, these players aren’t simply fading into the sunset. Many have fallen into poverty and aren’t capable of fully supporting themselves. Few of the roughly 180 former Negro Leaguers still alive have health insurance and many need medical care. Very few receive any type of pension support.

As a way to help these players, the Round Rock Express and the No Bats Baseball Club are hosting the “Baseball & Blues” benefit to bring awareness and financial support to these needy Negro League ballplayers. The weekend event will consist of the appearance of several former Negro Leaguers, a golf tournament, blues concert and three days of baseball featuring the No Bats Club, a group of very amateur players who get together every year to celebrate the game of baseball and raise money for a variety of charitable baseball-related organizations.

The Express and the No Bats Baseball Club, along with Yesterday’s Negro League Baseball Players Alumni, have identified eight former players that are in need of help. Some will receive health care or clothing, while another who passed away recently will have his funeral paid for.

“These guys have a lot of pride and won’t ask for any help,” Dennis Biddle, marketing director of the YNLBPA said. “A lot of them had broken bones from when they played that never healed correctly. They need medical help to fix these or to get knee or hip replacements. There’s only 180 left and probably 60-percent of them need help and most of them won’t ask for it.”

The weekend will start the evening of Thursday, September 4th when the No Bats players will take The Dell Diamond field. While the players fully admit their level of play isn’t exactly world class, they are passionate about the game and helping the Negro Leaguers.

“Really, there are two ways that we want to help,” Ted Simendinger, Chairman of No Bats said. “On one level, we want to touch the lives of the guys that we have identified as the most needy in a tangible way. We also want to increase the awareness of the needs of a lot of the other Negro Leaguers.”

The No Bats players will continue with the games on Friday and Saturday leading up to the Rome Tour Stop and concert on Saturday afternoon.

Although the concert is free, the Express and No Bats are asking that those in attendance make a donation to the cause, big or small. There will be a silent auction as well with baseball and blues memorabilia. Donor items include a signed and framed 1990 Stevie Ray Vaughan photograph, signed Willie Nelson Guitar, two original cartoon panels from popular “In the Bleachers” sports cartoonist Steve Moore, and many other baseball, blues, sports and entertainment memorabilia.

Moore is traveling in, at his own expense, to help support the cause. Donations collected will go to B.A.T., the Baseball Assistance Team set up by Major League Baseball, for management and distribution to the needy vets. B.A.T. helps the needs of former ballplayers in many different ways and is a zero-cost center for MLB. Every penny of funding donated to B.A.T. is redistributed back out to needy recipients.

The featured entertainers for the afternoon and early evening will be Texas Blues man Doyle Bramhall, and L.A. Sax man Hollis Gilmore. Bramhall has been mesmerizing fans with his unique style of blues for more than thirty years in and around Texas, while Gilmore, a.k.a. Big Poppa, has been playing his powerful brand of sax just as long on the west coast.

Special thanks to Capital Sports Entertainment for helping to put on both shows. For more information on any of the September 6th events:

ROME'S RABBLE REVELS IN HIS SHTICK

  • By Phil Fairbanks
  • Jul 29, 2001

Out of the blue, a live aerial shot of the Niagara Thruway popped onto the big center-field screen, a white Ford Bronco speeding toward downtown Buffalo, destined for the clones waiting in Dunn Tire Park.

Within moments, the crowd, far short of a record but full of passion, not to mention beer, rose to their feet and cheered the arrival of their leader.

Their god, Jim Rome, had arrived in what the sports talk show giant described as "Orenthal style."

The tone was set.

Nothing would be sacred on this hot, sunny Saturday in the Jungle. No one would be spared. Not O.J. Simpson. Not Doug Flutie or Tonya Harding. Not even Rochester.

With his fans chanting "Romey, Romey, Romey," the popular talk show host quickly turned his 25th Tour Stop into a Buffalo love fest, calling it the greatest Tour Stop yet.

"Buffalo," he said, "I never remember coming out on a stage, looking at a community and looking at a town and saying: 'It's over. It's already the mother of them all.' "

The crowd ate it up.

Though attendance at the free show fell far short of the record 22,000 who greeted Rome in Houston, the crowd made up for it in adoration.

This was nothing like Rome's weekday radio show on WGR, a syndicated hodgepodge of serious sports interviews, biting commentary and bizarre phone calls from followers, each of them reveling in the title "clone."

This was big-time entertainment -- a huge stage, a rock 'n' roll warm-up band and a big screen chock-full of buxom young women.

At Rome's feet, the masses swooned, greeting his every positive reference to Buffalo with applause.

When Rome spoke of the reasons he chose Buffalo over dozens of other cities, he mentioned the recent departure of both Flutie and Wade Phillips -- two Buffalo Bills he was glad to see leave.

"The thing that put me over the top was when Bum's son gotwhacked," he said. "As long as he was here, Rome was not going to be here. That gravy train did more harm than good."

And then he took off on Buffalo's eastern neighbor.

"A lot of people asked: 'Why Buffalo? Why Buffalo?' " he said. "It's very simple. Because it's not Crapchester."

This time, the crowd screamed.

Over the next 90 minutes, he interviewed former Bills and current Bills, and let it be known that, despite the smaller-than-expected crowd, he was happy with Buffalo's response to getting the latest Tour Stop.

"I'm kind of disappointed in the turnout," said Eric Tertinek of Orchard Park, one of the many clones on hand wearing an O.J. Simpson Bills jersey. "They tried to break the record, but it didn't happen."

Tertinek estimated that the park, which seats 20,500, was slightly more than half-full, the equivalent of about 12,000 to 14,000 people.

At least one of them, Mike Madejczyk, is a Flutie fan from Rochester. He took Rome's slams in stride.

"Everyone has their opinion," he said when asked about Rome's humor. "Actually, I think Rob Johnson is the wuss."

So there, Romey.

Jim Rome Not Pleased With WKNR’s Programming Decision

Dime: sullinger is “safest” pick for cavs, holmgren speaks about shurmur – not exactly awe inspiring stuff.

jim rome tour stops

The new lineup looks like this.  Mike & Mike in the Morning will continue to be carried from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM.  The Really Big Show with Tony Rizzo gets an extra hour from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  This pushes the first hour of the Jim Rome show (from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM) to KNR2 on 1540 AM.  Then the final two hours of Rome’s show will continue back on the flagship station 850 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Get all that?

Yesterday on his show, Jim Rome addressed the topic and was none too happy to have his show split up.  And really, why would he be?  Rome will now have the first hour of his show pushed to a station with a far weaker signal, not to mention the confusion for fans.  Now Rome fans will have to start their day attempting to get 1540 to come in on their radio before switching at 1:00 PM for the second hour of the show.

If you live within earshot of 1350 AM in Akron, you will probably just listen to the entire Jim Rome show there.  They are presumably licking their chops down there where they have added a giant banner to their website proclaiming that you can hear all three hours on their station.

So, what in the world is going on here?

Interestingly enough, it sounds as if Tony Rizzo doesn’t appreciate being the guy to mess with Rome’s show. As someone who has been asked to fill in for Rome when he is on vacation, it is hard to believe Rizzo doesn’t at least have mixed emotions about the deal. So that means there must be something else going on.

Only station owner Craig Karmazin knows for sure.  Is he trying to boost the profile of KNR2?  Jim Rome certainly thinks so and he didn’t mince words on his show yesterday.  “It’s not the first time a station has done this to the show… Right now we have more stations than we’ve ever had before.”  Then he dropped a bomb. “In this particular case, in this market, in that city, on that town, it bothers me more than any other market because of the nature of our relationship… It’s Cleveland. It’s a very important market to me.”

If you really think about it, there is only one good explanation for this.  There is only one person who could maybe benefit from this, and that is Tony Rizzo and his show.  Meanwhile, it doesn’t sound as if Tony Rizzo is particularly happy with how he is arriving at an extra hour.  Sure, he could be lying, but I don’t get that sense because of how fortunate he has felt to fill in for Rome when Rome is on vacation.

In the end, WKNR is seemingly capitalizing on one of its most popular shows (Rizzo) by cannibalizing a portion of Jim Rome’s show.  In the end, I am not sure how it makes sense, but I am also not privy to all the station’s numbers.  Maybe Rizzo’s new third hour will out-perform Jim Rome’s first hour.  Maybe Rizzo’s third hour will carry new local listeners while KNR2 will retain enough of Rome’s original audience that the net result is a boost when looking at both stations combined.  Maybe this is all a plan to boost listenership via streaming on the website and on smart phones.

We’ll have to see, but for now it appears that ESPNCleveland has merely confused its fans, upset the biggest national radio sports personality, and put their most popular host in an awkward position.

Yeah, I feel its a little ridiculous. I hate the Rizzo show, only because of the other hacks on it. Rizzo is ok, but why do we have a bunch of crap guys on WKNR here (R and R is pretty awful too)? I used to listen to Rizzo, but I heard, if you don’t like this show, listen to something else, a little too much on that damn show. And so I did. Bring Rome back, its the only thing I listen to on WKNR (and don’t even get me started on Mike and Mike, they are AWFUL).

' src=

This is Rizzo’s fourth hour, not third.

' src=

I’m not pleased with Jim Rome’s programming, so I guess we’re even.

It’s sad and pathetic that the only sports talk station in a town with three professional teams and a strong college sports following has to resort to syndicated programming to fill the airwaves in the first place. Surprised Brinda didn’t somehow weasel his way back into an on-air slot.

Viva La Sirius!

' src=

This is totally senseless! I have no idea how the whole syndication thing works, but I assumed they would have to run it by Rome to move his show. KNR2 is impossible to get. I’ve driven from Akron to Cleveland and never been able to tune it in. I like Rizzo’s show and an extra hour is cool, just cut Mike and Mike.

' src=

When exactly has Jim Rome been pleased about ANYTHING?

' src=

Thank Goodness for this decision. I can’t stand Rome’s program, and since 1350 also syndicates the show, I have listen to podcasts during my afternoon commute. This is a blessing, and hopefully a precursor to Cleveland standing up for itself and producing local programs.

' src=

When in doubt, it’s ALWAYS about $$$. Moving the 1st hour of Rome off of WKNR frees up an entire new hour of local programming with no additional cost to Karmazin (he is using on-air talent that was previously employed) while gaining an hour of local advertisements. Even if Rizzo can’t match Rome’s numbers in that 4th hour, Karmazin can justify the move as long as Rizzo retains enough listeners to justify the prices he is charging advertisers in that hour.

Karmazin did an “Ask the Owner” show on Tuesday where he skated around the issue, claiming that the station wanted to be “Big League” and those types of stations had local programming, not syndicated programming. He claimed ratings for local programming went up as the show progressed, while ratings for national programming went down.

There’s probably some truth in all of that, but it doesn’t add up either. If local programming is beating out the Rome show, then why keep Rome on the station, and why keep Rome’s second 2 hours on the station if the ratings are getting worse as time goes on for national programming? Karmazin wants to have his cake and eat it too – he wants that extra hour of time to sell local ads, but he also wants to fulfill his contractual obligations and keep Rome on airwaves he controls, because he knows that if Rome jumped ship to another Cleveland affiliate, his local programming on WKNR would get killed.

' src=

What is this “radio” device people keep talking about? Do I call my cable company about it?

' src=

In this age of internet radio and smartphones, I can get both WKNR and KNR2 on my Droid phone with a FREE app, “Tunein Radio”. This app can get local radio per areas. Add in live streaming if you REALLY need to have all 3 hrs of Rome, it is easy to get. I prefer local sports programming and I like the moves.

' src=

It’s actually very important that Rizzo gets this extra hour, what with all of the big things happening in this town right now.

1) The Cavs are on an 18 game win…er, losing streak 2) The Browns playing for…um… 3) Pitchers and catchers reporting in…3 weeks?

Wait, why did they do this again?

' src=

@ Eli – I’m pretty sure you have to send a telegraph in order to ensure the radio people get your communication.

' src=

If I knew radio terms, I would be able to say this better, but maybe the WKNR listeners just got sick of the same sound bites being used day after day after day in the first hour of Rome’s show with no other new information. I don’t dislike Rome, in fact I usually end up listening to the first hour of his show during lunch, but I get so sick of the format in the first hour… you don’t really get anything worth listening to until the last segment of the first hour. Nobody continues to beat a dead horse on their radio program quite like Jim Rome.

' src=

What exactly did Rome say on air? Need more quotes. Great article Craig! Good stuff.

' src=

Howard Stern.

at nick #6-I am all for promotion of local programming, but lets get rid of these old dudes and bring some young Cleveland Blood on board. I would say get rid of all the syndicated shows, if we could have some interesting people in our town discuss sports. But, we have a bunch of hacks on air.

' src=

Craig Karmazin, that’s not a good call. I don’t like that call. That’s not a very good call.

' src=

#1, only one of the “mike’s” is awful. The other one probably can’t believe he has to put up with the little twerp.

They should just rename “Mike and Mike” to “a four hour lovefest for everything new york” and be done with it.

' src=

Living not in Cleveland, it’s nice to listen to a Cleveland sports talk show. But it’s getting so bad with all of the constant ads that I can’t do it anymore. I listen with the RadioTime app on my phone and listening to Rome is refreshing to actually get 20 straight minutes without some effing plug about how they all went to buy a new Kia yesterday or bought flowers for some broad. In fact, if anyone still wants to listen to a GOOD stream of Rome and not some crappy signal from the cheap fools at WKNR, listen to the 104.3 stream from Denver. Half the commercials they play classic rock.

I couldn’t stand another hour of Rizzo and his consistent plugs every 5 minutes so it’s no biggie to me. I’m only tuning in now for press conferences or after the occasional big news.

' src=

Gross. Just gross. A fourth hour of Rizzo? Him leaving Fox makes more sense now, FOX probably didn’t want him doing a fourth hour.

Yes, another hour of Rizzo means more commercials for window nation and great escape. Joy. FWKNR.

Someone rich, please buy a radio station in Cleveland and hire some talent.

' src=

Yes because Rome’s plugs about Five Hour Energy, Brut, Skoreit, etc are so much different then all of the plugs Rizzo does. It’s how the radio business allows you to listen for free. I like both shows. I get tired of the two clowns with Rizzo, but I also get tired of Rome saying the same thing over and over again. I do like getting the local spin on KNR, although I could do without the comedians they have to bring in and free food Fridays.

' src=

@16: Rack him!

Clones: What is going on in C-town? Bumping my first hour, are you serious? That makes no sense. Why would you do that? Why would you bump such a popular national show? That makes no sense. Why would you that?

[unnecessarily long pause]

That’s ridiculous. I’m out.

[crumples paper into microphone]

' src=

Great article…take it from a daily listener of WKNR, more local is better, but it has to be GOOD local. Rizz is awesome…Aaron Goldhammer – not so much. He constantly rips Ohio State, treats the callers like dirt 99% of the time, has a nasally voice, acts like a know it all from out of town that speaks for Cleveland(?) – that needs to end!!! Time to step it up, Rizz. Craig K. on his “talk with the owner” segment earlier this week, put the blame and responsibility on Rizzo for letting Hammer do what he does… It has to get better – fire someone Keith Williams!

' src=

What’s worse, Rome’s sycophantic idiot callers or the two obnoxious trolls on Rizzo?

' src=

Speaking as a professional in the radio business, I would have to say that I encourage nearly ANY move to put more local programming on the air. Nationally syndicated sports radio is the ultimate echo chamber, and they are always focused on east coast issues (with the occasional sex tabloid story).

I lived in South Bend, IN for a time, and I was able to hear Chicago sports radio. Let me tell you, having local shows all day long is awesome compared to national shows. Local shows can really connect with listeners in ways that national shows can’t…however, national shows are cheaper than hiring local talent.

While the Rizzo show may be bad (don’t know…I live in Columbus, obviously), it’s a better trend to go local than to go national. That’s just my two cents.

' src=

I heard Rome discussing this late last week. He spoke pretty passionately about how Cleveland was one of the first non-Cali markets that put him on when he was trying to go national. He also mentioned that he always stuck by WKNR and never even listened to offers from other Cleveland stations. Not sure if that is true or not, but it was convincing to me.

This seems like WKNR wanting to have their cake and eat it too. So you don’t get rid of Rome to put on local talent; you just screw with one hour? Publicity hounding, it seems to me.

' src=

Yes I am a former KNR intern but I have ZERO inside info on this. I’m just going by what I know on how the radio biz works.

Per Rizzo, he got a raise to go full time (which he had to do. He couldn’t keep working 2 jobs). Obviously, the bills need to be paid somehow.

By having local programming in the first hour of Rome/last hour of Rizz, KNR can sell more ad space (which offers more opportunities for sales people and creates jobs at Good Karma Broadcasting and in Cleveland). Part of the syndication deal is that Rome can run his national ads for X amount of time. Craig Karmazin explained this the other day.

The new clock: Less commercials on KNR per hour, but the extra hour of The Really Big Show means KNR doesn’t lose any ad time. It’s also likely that KNR can charge a higher premium for ad space because it’s sold as “X commercials per hour. So now that there’s less commercials there’s a higher demand.” This is a win for KNR.

KNR2 is starting to expand with local programming. This is another win for selling ads. Jim Rome on KNR2 is a huge way to draw listeners to KNR2.

The shift to streams and smartphones: It’s happening. Hell, when I interviewed for my internship with Top Men the first thing I said was “the future is smartphones.” You’ll be able to get national ESPN Radio and Jim Rome anywhere because of this phenomenon. Providing local programming is NECESSARY to stay relevant in the local radio arena. This is why music stations are dropping like flies: there’s not much locally relevant stuff on radio stations.

In a perfect world, KNR is local from 5 AM-midnight and KNR2 is Mike and Mike, Jim Rome, Cowherd and other popular nationally syndicated programs along with as much local programming as possible.

I’m a Rome Clone myself, but the fact that KNR wants to add more local programming is very, VERY good for not only Cleveland sports radio, but for jobs in the city.

@ Ammo…

Spot on…sports/talk/news/local programming is the best chance for radio to have a relevant future.

Also @ Ammo…

I went to your blog and saw that you are an OU alum…me too.

What year? I’m ’05.

I wish they would’ve left the programming how it was in the morning, then go to Rome’s show as scheduled, then brought Rizzo back for afternoon R&R so we didn’t have to listen to Rhoda and Reghi be hacks on the radio. Those 2 guys suck. I mean 1 is a Steelers fan and Reghi generally has no idea what he’s talking about. He’s a great play by play guy but awful on the radio.

' src=

BABBA BOOEY BABBA BOOEY BABBA BOOEY!

' src=

Thought for sure Rizzo would have been moved to afternoons since Reghi and Roda are getting killed in ratings. But it makes sense to keep him where he is at. Hopefully it helps the station.

' src=

@ Jeff 5. January 27, 2011

-The Lions going winless. Great stuff. Just yesterday he was pretty happy Chad Ochocinco was going back to Johnson.

' src=

The only good local show on 850 right now is “X’s and O’s with the Pros”.

They need to get rid of Munch, Reghi and Hammer all together, even on commercials.

' src=

I’m no big fan of Goldhammer or Fedor, but I am astounded that anyone thinks that Tony Rizzo is doing a good job. The guy has been a trainwreck for the last six months. Fake laughing at everything, doing no research, whining about his schedule – the guy has been terrible.

Phoniness is always the first sign of problems, and Rizzo hasn’t been genuine on the radio in over a year. Maybe the single job will help him find some balance and get his stuff together. But right now, the guy is a disaster waiting to happen.

' src=

My biggest problem with this (and it’s been touched on already) is the ungodly amount of advertisements in the WKNR local programming. If I have to hear about DEALS DEALS DEALS Belzer at that stupid Nissan place one more time, I may just stop listening to radio all together.

And Rizzo’s show has been known to devote ENTIRE segments to pimping out the crap they endorse. Especially on “free food Thursday” or whatever it is. Come on. We want to hear sports talk. Not how delicious the portabello mushroom sandwich is at the Donkey Punch Cafe.

I hope to see this changed back sooner than later.

' src=

Freaking awesome post, well done. Love Rome.

' src=

Less Jim Rome is exactly what the world needs. One less hour of a no-talent blowhard confusing being smug for being intelligent? Now if only they’d give him one less hour on television.

I see what Mike is saying. Rizzo and his rug have the two interns to start all the lame arguments. I remember someone called in ripping him for the fake arguments and Rizzo got real defensive. Maybe because it is true huh Tony?

@ B-bo “One less hour of a no-talent blowhard confusing being smug for being intelligent? ”

Are we talking about Rome or Michael Reghi ?

Rome’s at least funny some of the time…. I just realized, this means 1 hour less of Jay Mohr ! I love when he hosts the show ! Pitchforks, ready.

' src=

Rome is hands down the best national sports talk radio program.

I Dont mind rizzo, but between the absurd commercials (as mentioned above) and them talking over each other while arguing i quit listening to them.

' src=

It would be one thing if Rizzo actually talked about Cleveland sports. The show is one, long 4 hour commercial mixed with intern dating games, a terrible amateur movie critic, and completely irrelevant trivia all leading up to another commercial. And the whole Tony Rizzo’s eternal optimist angle, battling against his younger, more knowledgeable, protagonist co hosts is something out of a WWF wrestling show in the 1980’s. Jim Rome is the only thing worth listening on that joke of radio station. Time to start over.

That post by Barry a few back almost had me spitting up my coffee this morning! Freakin’ hilarious… Someone else mentioned Rizzo…as I said in my previous post, it is time for him to step it up or he will end up being an old retread like Papa prune juice Brinda. A little less “really?” and “Aaron!!!” and a little more actual prep and entertainment. Still love that show – Goldhammer just grates on me with no signs of changing.

Exactly. I’m sick of hearing them munch on bbq ribs at 9am like pigs in a trough not being able to understand a word they’re saying. It’s disgusting. Not to mention all of the times they bring people in for the 15 minute interviews about their coffin business. One of these days I’ll tune back in at work and record the amount of time they actually talk about sports/non-ad stuff, and how much is advertisement in an hour.

Sorry, guess I’m just used to quality sports talk programming in Denver where our guys aren’t constantly promoting crap. I understand its good for local businesses and such, but isn’t that what the commercial breaks are for? If you’re going to do it, at least get some guys in there that have insight on what they’re talking about.

' src=

Love the Really Big Show and love Rome. Start Rizzo and the RBS at 8am and get rid of the AWFUL ‘Mike and Mike.’ Problem solved. (Get rid of Chris Fedor…he is a jerk).

' src=

Goldhammer’s fingers are all over this. He stands the most to gain by the bigger platform and will jump out of here first chance. He somehow conned Rizzo into this and it sucks. Mike and Mike is an abortion. I’d much rather they cut into those jackwads.

Bring back Rome for 3 hours on WKNR. Fire Goldhammer. Let Rizzo get himself back together.

' src=

Everything is about money and nepotism. You all have to understand the Karmazin way of thinking. First off the big true Karmazin as in Mel Karmazin runs Sirius/XM. He bout the stations for his son to play like most daddy’s do to silver spooners. Remember baby Craig Karmazin went to NYU as did Aaron Goldhammer. Well Rizzo isn’t stupid, he’s been up Goldhammers butt since the beginning. Seriousy, how many 50 yr olds hang out with 28 yr olds unless there is some ass kissing to do. What is really sad is that all of this is true. But also he hangs out with Goldhammer to pick up his young chicki babes since he got divorced and he uses his celebrity to smooch around 28-30 yr old woman he has nothing in common with. Remember, Rizzo will use a good charity for his own gain. He will act like he doesn’t but don’t believe him. His personal gain is that someone likes him. He has an insecurity of a 15 yr old girl.

With that being said, Rizzo isn’t bad on the radio however he has forgotten about his hometown. Now if you mention this to him, he will get totally defensive. Just listen closely when he’s on the radio. The worst part about the show are the two hacks. Goldhammer and Fedor. We actually have Aaron Goldhammer speaking to national shows about how us Clevelanders feel, while in real life he puts us down every chance he gets. Aaron Goldhammer hates being here bcuz we hate him being here speaking for us. Aaron Goldhmmer has never had to work a day in his life. His upbringing was that of Karmazin and he is so insecure that he blames Cleveland people for it. When he is talking in general out with his girlfriend, he call us stupid and a bunch of low life hillbillies if it were anyone else other than Aaron Goldhammer, they would have been fired a long time ago. The station plays it up like he’s just a kidder who likes to antoagnize the city for radio humor, but it’s not true. He really can’t stand living here and the people for the most part who dint hang out in the stimulated Ohio City or at Trendy Tremont.

Now for Fedor, he’s the self proclaimmed reality dude, however, even though he may be right on points, he needs to shut up and move on to the next story. He gets himself untroubled by trying to be tough to his word. My goodness, just be quiet and move on. Fedor will get better because he works hard and he does have some sense of journalistic integrity. Fesor does it because it’s his job to inform, whereas Goldhammer does it to get applauded and look cool to overcome his insecurities. This is ashame becuz you could have a great show with Rizzo and Fedor. Give Hammer his own show and then look at the ratings. It would be sad. It’s OK to be the bad guy like Pete Franklin and Gary Dee, but the never did what Goldhammer does. Puts down people personally with true heart in Cleveland. The shows ratings would sore if Goldhammer was off the show. What Goldhammer needs to understand, you will never be good on the radio when you carr about what people say to you and then you personally attack the environment of the caller with hate. When you get older you will understand.

I love my city and it’s people. We are the proudest sports city in the country. We also know what hard work is and Jime Rome understood that. He ALWAYS stuck up for Cleveland. Also remember, Jim Rome wouldn’t even be in Ctown if it wasn’t for Kenny Rhoda. Kenny was the man with the plan there. However Mr celebrity Tony Rizzo to took all the applause. Be strong Clevelanders and listen to the RBS show real good. You will hear about their partying and how cool they are about the woman while seeking their products big time while Rizzo and Hammer get free cars to drive. There is nothing different that those guys are doing that the politicians did in Cleveland. Sell my product and I will put free windows in your house. Really Big Show, you have been found out.

Have a goodnight Cleveland !! Whatch out for fake attitudes!!

' src=

4 hours of local sports is too much when three will do. the fourth hour is not that informitive anyways. Rome gives me interviews from all over the country.

Jim Rome - Tour Stops

Jim Rome's Tour Stops (also referred to as The Jim Rome World Tour ) was a series of limited access live shows, often held in arenas, or other outdoor venues, which features sports-related guests and activities. The tour originated from The Jim Rome Show radio program, which is featured on over 200 affiliate radio stations in the United States and Canada. Generally, Rome would hold a few Tour Stops each year, with a very irregular schedule. They were quietly and informally discontinued after the Tour Stop at Cleveland in 2004. Rome has cited a more demanding television and radio schedule for the discontinuation of tour stops, most notably because of the inception of Jim Rome is Burning on ESPN. Show listeners, referred to as the "Clones," considered the Tour Stops a way of celebrating the popularity of the show, and a means of meeting other fans of the program. Since 2000 Rome promised to hold a Tour Stop in the city whose NFL team finished the season 0-16, his so-called "dream season." The Detroit Lions finally accomplished the feat in 2008, but no Tour Stop has been held thereafter in Detroit.

Tickets to a Tour Stop were normally free, but needed to be acquired from the local affiliate. Some Tour Stops have reportedly had over 10,000 in attendance. One of the Tour Stops' main attractions was the appearance of sports figures from local teams. Tour Stops were not broadcast on the radio, but Rome typically played clips from the activities and guests on the next regular program.

Famous quotes containing the words tour and/or stops :

“ Left Washington, September 6, on a tour through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia.... Absent nineteen days. Received every where heartily. The country is again one and united! I am very happy to be able to feel that the course taken has turned out so well. ” — Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

“ There is nothing truer than myth: history, in its attempt to “realize” myth, distorts it, stops halfway; when history claims to have “succeeded” this is nothing but humbug and mystification. Everything we dream is “realizable.” Reality does not have to be: it is simply what it is. ” — Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)

To get tickets (a max of 4) Send a self addressed stamp envelope to: Jim Rome Tour Stop Star 610 Sports 24 Greenway Plaza Suite 1900 Houston, TX 77046 Rome during his tour stops does a stand up routine of basically his best material. He mixes in some local stuff, stuff that can't be said on the air, and has some guests with him. Since this is being held at Enron, I guess he'll be @ home plate with Drayton and the rest of the Astros- Jungle Dwellers. Even though Im no fan of the Astros, I just might throw a few tomatoes at Drayton also. His salary dumping is sure going to cost Rockets some votes. ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. The show is pretty much run off of high testosterone. You can expect a lot of Jungle smak taken up another notch or two. Hopefully he'll be able to get in a couple of good guests other than Astros. I'd like to see Steve Elkington and Jay Mohr to name a couple. Old School ------------------ Just Build It!

What's so funny and ironic about this Tour Stop is the whole setup for it. Rome is aired on KILT. Rome is tight with KILT, Drayton, and the Astros. KTRH is the Astros Flagship. KILT & Rome convince Drayton to hold Tour Stop @ Enron. The Astros will be sponsoring an event for another Radio Station @ their own ballpark. This is so funny. Obviously KTRH can't be happy. Especially, since KILT just stole John McClain, and is now going head-to-head to Sportsbeat / Astros Play-by-Play. Of course since, Drayton is hosting the Tour Stop he's going to get all of the concession revenues. And with possibly 30,000 (24,000 were @ the Cleveland one) drunk Clones at Enron with beer at $5.50 a pop Drayton will make a motherload. The irony of it all, Rob ------------------ visit my website @ http://home.icq.com/bayoucitybob/ 1999-2000 Sportscaster of the Year @ KTXT-FM, Lubbock

Did anyone see the highlights of the tour stop in Cleveland that has been showing on FSSW? That has to be the WORST thing I have ever seen, EVER. It is like a concert without the music. If you don't get that analogy, here is what I mean. You go to a rock concert and in between the songs the Band members will go into to little stories and praise whatever city they are in attempt to pander the crowd and get them pumped up. You know like: ROME: "H-Town is my Faovrite City!!!" Crowd: " YEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!" Rome: "The Clones in C-Town are great, but NOBODY compares to the H-TOWN CLONES!!!" Crowd: " YEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!" Rome:"What does H-Town think of Bud Adams???" Crowd: " BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" Rome:"Yeah, Bud can kiss my @SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!" Crowd: "YEAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!" Rome: "I'm guessing that H-town likes to PARTY!!!" Crowd: " YEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!" Rome: "You know the C-Town WAS the mother of all tour stops, but H-town is really close, let me hear who YOU think wins!" Crowd: " YEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!" etc....etc....etc.... That is ALL the tour stop consists of, it is HORRIBLE! It will be about as entertaining as watching black and white reruns of Petticoat Junction, in Spanish. The only thing that would make the "tour stop" even remotely worth attending would be to go to laugh at the FREAKS who showed up there. If you haven't watched the FSSW special, let me tell you the crowd at a tour stop is like a NASCAR event, Star Trek Convention and a Klan Rally all rolled into one! A group of more intellectually challenged, jobless, tools would be hard to come by. I can only imagine these dimwits walking around Enron field, trading SMAK with each other, LOL! Even funnier, Imagine Joe Clone ordering something from the concession stands, "I would like a big @ssssssss Beer, peanuts and a snickers….OUT!" It is hard to believe that these people don't realize how freaking STUPID they look and sound. They are almost as brainwashed as aggies. Trust me, the "Jungle Tour Stop" ain't worth the price of admission. [This message has been edited by Ty_Webb (edited August 09, 2000).]
Damn Ty-Webb I officially crown u as one of the FUNniest newbies on this board. I cant stand that dork Rome either. I listen to him sometimes to see whats happening in the sports world. But 25 percent of his show is about Orenthol. 25 percent is silence as he tries to come up with some lame jokes. 25 percent is actually stuff u can listen to. Too bad the last 25 percent is him just repeating what he just stated a minute earlier. I cant believe there are actually thousands of these dumb ass clowns, urrrr, aaahhhh I mean "clones" in every city. ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. Posting in stupid threads is not FUN! 2. Terrence in Sierra Madre

  • Edit source
  • View history

Terrence in Sierra Madre is an old-school Jungle caller from the community of Sierra Madre, in the northeastern suburbs of Los Angeles. A Smack-Off participant for 13 years running, Terrence ranks highly among the legendary old-school Southern California callers, and has been labeled by many as the best caller never to win the title of King of Smack - in fact, Terrence remains among the few legendary callers without a title who have failed to place even second in the event.

Along with participating in 13 straight Smack-Off championships, Terrence remains a frequent caller to the show - someone who will often get in on a Friday or a getaway day, often as the first caller.

Unlike some polarizing callers such as Jeff in Richmond , Oren in Denver or Rachel in Houston , Terrence is widely loved by the show's listeners and emailers, who year after year tune in to the Smack-Off hoping Terrence will shed his reputation and finally win King of Smack. Terrence is widely loved mainly for his takes which are often considered fresh and funny by many of the listeners.

Many Terrence backers, along with Rome himself, believe that his best Smack-Off performance came in the 2005 event, in which he placed third to Iafrate and five-time champ Sean the Cablinasian . In that Smack-Off, he combined his take on 'the average Clone' with a song about call screener Jason Stewart .

Though he hasn't won the event, Terrence has been a fixture in the Smack-Off top 5 in recent years, finishing 5th or higher in four of those five years. Yet, Jim Rome himself wondered publicly following Smack-Off 2008 if Terrence's chances had slammed shut. In his 2008 Smack-Off winning call, Iafrate was careful to note that the "best caller never to win" has never placed higher than third, joking he was "still searching for number two, and still unable to produce number two without a laxative."
