Comedian Jo Koy Brings FUNNY IS FUNNY World Tour To Boston's Boch Center

The show is part of the Funny is Funny World Tour and will include all new material.

Comedian Jo Koy, star of four Netflix comedy specials is set to perform at the Boch Center Wang Theatre in Boston on Saturday, October 15. The show is part of the Funny is Funny World Tour and will include all new material. Tickets go on sale Friday, April 8 at 10:00 AM at www.bochcenter.org .

As one of today's premiere stand-up comics Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings performing at a Las Vegas coffee house to now selling out the world's most prestigious venues including Radio City Music Hall (New York), Chase Center (San Francisco), The Forum (Los Angeles), Mall of Asia Arena (Manila, PH), Coca-Cola Arena (Dubai) and ICC Theatre (Sydney, AU). The hugely relatable comic pulls inspiration from his family, specifically his son.

Koy will next be seen on the silver screen in the Universal Picture comedy film, Easter Sunday in theaters August 5th, 2022. The feature film is loosely based on Koy's life experiences and will be set around a Filipino family gathering to celebrate Easter Sunday. In addition to the big screen, Jo's single-cam comedy Josep landed a pilot order at ABC.

His highly anticipated 4th Netflix stand-up special was shot March 2022 at the Forum in Los Angeles. The special is a follow up to his 2019 Netflix special, Comin' In Hot - Koy has had four highly rated and successful stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix. In June 2020, the comedian released his first variety special, Jo Koy: In His Elements on Netflix in which Koy brings the laughs and beats to Manila, spotlighting local culture in a one-of-a-kind show featuring Filipino-American comedians, DJs and B-boys.

In 2021, Koy released his first autobiography, Mixed Plate: Chronicles of an All-American Combo with Harper Collins Publishers to raved reviews. In this funny and moving memoir, Koy uncovers the stories behind his stand-up: the conflict, the drama and the laughter as he struggles to find his place in the entertainment industry, his home and around the world.

Koy has appeared on over 140 episodes of Chelsea Lately as a season regular roundtable guest. Jo Koy has appeared on more than 140 episodes of E!'s hit late night show Chelsea Lately as a regular roundtable guest, and has had a number of stand-up specials on both Comedy Central and Netflix. On February 20, 2022, he comes to the Prudential Center for the first time!

VACCINE REQUIREMENTS

All guests aged five (5) and older entering Prudential Center will be required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Additionally, the city of Newark’s previous order requiring all guests to wear masks throughout events, unless actively eating or drinking, will remain in effect.

Guests wishing to transfer tickets must log into their Ticketmaster account and manage transfers from there.

Guests with general admission tickets may begin lineup at 8:00AM on the show day. The general admission line will being at the Citizens Tower on the corner of Mulberry St. and Edison Place.

Bags up to 12"x14" are permitted inside Prudential Center. Anything larger, including backpacks, are not permitted, with the exception of childcare or medical bags. Permissible larger bags will be X-rayed. All bags are subject to search by Prudential Center security team members at each point of entry. Bags that do not meet these expectations must be returned to the guest’s vehicle or stored in a Prudential Center supplied locker at the guest’s expense. Lockers are located outside the Ford Tower and Lafayette Street entrances.

Jo Koy’s Funny is Funny World Tour, originally scheduled for May 7 at the venue, will now be held on May 5, due to the Golden State Warriors advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals against the Memphis Grizzlies. All tickets purchased for Koy’s May 7 performance will be valid for entry for the show on May 5. As one of today’s premiere stand-up comics, Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings performing at a Las Vegas coffee house to now selling out the world’s most prestigious venues including Radio City Music Hall (New York), Chase Center (San Francisco), The Forum (Los Angeles), Mall of Asia Arena (Manila, PH), Coca-Cola Arena (Dubai) and ICC Theatre (Sydney, AU). Jo Koy bringing his Funny Is Funny World Tour to Rochester Auditorium Theatre

Comedian Jo Koy will bring his Funny Is Funny World Tour to Rochester Broadway Theatre League’s Auditorium Theatre, 885 E. Main St., at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.

Tickets (starting at $49.50) go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday at Ticketmaster.com ; a pre-sale starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Koy, who began his career performing stand-up in Las Vegas coffeehouses in the mid-1990s and in recent years has sold out such high-profile venues as Radio City Music Hall, draws his comedy from family situations, many involving his teenage son.

His fourth Netflix special, “Live from the Los Angeles Forum,” will premiere on the streaming service Sept. 13.

He told The Hollywood Reporter that prior to making it big, he worked at a Nordstrom Rack near the venue and would drive by it all the time. “It’s just so iconic and in your head, you’re like, ‘Oh, that’ll never happen,’ but then you convince yourself that you’re going to perform there one day. Fast-forward to 20 years later, and here I am, on that stage, and so I had to bring it.” 

Koy also has a movie coming out. “Easter Sunday,” which is loosely based on his own experiences and revolves around a Filipino-American family gathering for the holiday, opens in theaters Aug. 4 .

Last week, he and fellow comic Chelsea Handler made headlines when they ended their relationship of less than a year.

The two announced their breakup in separate Instagram posts. Handler, 47, wrote that despite things not working out, Koy “blew my heart open with love and because of him, my life experience has changed forever.”

Koy, 51, wrote that he and Handler “will always remain great friends and always have love for one another.”

The two had a platonic relationship for nearly two decades before going public as a couple last fall. Koy appeared on Handler’s E! show "Chelsea Lately" more than 140 times during its run from 2007 to 2014, and in an October 2019 interview with The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he said those appearances gave his comedy career a huge boost.

“She changed everything when I was on her show,” said Koy, who also has been featured on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live." “She was the modern-day Johnny Carson. When you killed it on Carson, you went to another level. The same for Chelsea's show,” he said.

Jo Koy returns to PNW with comedy show at Climate Pledge Arena

Comedian Jo Koy, who grew up in Tacoma, returns to Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena for an 8 p.m. show April 5 following his December 2022 appearance at the Tacoma Dome, his first time performing in his hometown venue.

“With the Tacoma Dome, I felt like I was in a stadium. It felt massive. And I loved every single minute of it,” he says. “I’d never felt the roar [of the crowd] have a delay in my life. It felt good to know this is the same place I had tickets to see Michael Jackson and he canceled that show when I was 15 or 16. I’d never set foot inside the Dome until I performed there.”

When Koy last played Climate Pledge Arena in January 2022, he brought along his now-adult son, who works Koy’s merchandise store on the tour. Koy got his son the same seat where Koy watched Eddie Murphy’s “Raw” show in November 1987.

“Climate Pledge is on another level,” Koy says. “I’ve played a lot of arenas. There’s something about the intimacy that Climate Pledge has. I think it’s the way they rebuilt it. [The crowd] feels like they’re a lot closer than normal, like they were on top of me.”

Koy, who has a deal for two more Netflix comedy specials, says the biggest difference about playing Seattle or Tacoma compared to other stops on his current world tour is the feelings the PNW locales conjure.

“My heart is full, especially because my son works for me now and reminiscing on my childhood and taking him through memory lane with me, I can never get enough of it,” Koy says. “There’s a whole world over there he doesn’t know about. It’s fun [to see him] catch fish at Pike Place Market. I wish I did that when I was a kid, but I got to live vicariously through him.”

Koy says the theme of his current tour is where he’s at now in his life.

“I’m older now so we’re talking about that. Life is changing. Now all the hair is gray so I’ve got to keep it shaved down really close to the head,” Koy says. “I’m in a happier place. It’s not so stressful. My son is an adult now and he’s thinking about his life and that’s the best part about being a dad, seeing your offspring grow into an adult.”

Koy did not say if he has any local-specific stories ready for the hometown crowd, but he says his tour changes with every show.

“I’m in Wichita, Kan., tonight,” Koy says during a mid-March phone interview. “Last night I was in Kansas City, Mo., and I already know tonight is gonna be a completely different show just because of what I did last night. I open my mouth and something funny comes out and I go, ‘Alright, got to make that part of the act now.’ ”

Koy has cameras trained on him during his performances to document every show so he can play the tape back to see “what I liked and what I didn’t like.”

Koy’s tour follows his January debut as host of the Golden Globes telecast, which didn’t win rave reviews from critics or folks posting to social media , but Koy received support from fellow comedians, including Steve Martin, Michael Che, Kevin Hart, Howard Stern and Jimmy Kimmel.

“You’ve got Whoopi Goldberg Facetiming me and Jamie Foxx Facetiming me,” Koy says. “The internet will blow anything up and out of proportion. Look at the gig: It’s like a corporate gig and unfortunately this one was televised. It’s all good. I went on to sell out the [Kia] Forum. That’s more important to me. I’m the first comic to sell six sold out nights [at the Forum]. That’s one of those things I hold close to my heart. Those are the gigs I was thinking about when I saw Eddie Murphy at Climate Pledge Arena.”

The day after his Seattle show, Koy will stick around to emcee breakdancing competition Red Bull Lords of the Floor , an event he previously hosted in its first outing in 2001.

“I was still a nobody then,” Koy says. “I started in 1989 so that was 13 years into my career.”

Taking place at WAMU Theater, Lords of the Floor features at least two local b-boys (Twixx and Jeromeskee performing as the duo Massive Monkees) and breakdancers who will compete in the 2024 Olympics.

“I used to breakdance in Tacoma. I was a b-boy back in the day,” Koy says. “That’s my claim to fame at Spanaway Junior High School. Ask any teacher. I killed it in the assembly.”

Koy says it was happenstance that Lords of the Floor got set for Seattle the day after Koy’s Climate Pledge Arena show.

“Another reason I love doing this is these are my friends,” Koy says. “Before anything happened in my career, I was hanging out with these cats every weekend. It’s just pure enjoyment that I get to see them do things I wish I could do still. But with sciatica and arthritis, I have to watch from a distance and stay hydrated. Everything’s tight now. Everything’s a grunt and a groan when I walk.”

As one of today’s premiere stand-up comedians, Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings performing in a Las Vegas coffee house. Jo’s uniquely relatable comedy pulls inspiration from his colourful family that has reached all kinds of people and has translated into sold-out arenas around the world.

In 2022, Koy kicked off his Funny is Funny World Tour by selling-out the Climate Pledge Arena (over 14,000 tickets) in his hometown of Seattle, and ended the tour with a sold-out show at Tacoma Dome (over 19,000 tickets). Today, he continues breaking sales records at some of the most prestigious venues around the world including Mall of Asia Arena (Manila, Philippines), The Forum (Los Angeles), Coca-Cola Arena (Dubai), ICC Theatre (Sydney, Australia), Radio City Music Hall (New York City), and FTX Arena (Miami) to name a few. This past November, Koy sold-out Madison Square Garden for the first time, marking another milestone for the comedian. In 2017, Koy broke a record for the most tickets sold by a single artist at 23,000 tickets and 11 sold-out shows at The Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu. In response, the mayor’s office in Honolulu proclaimed November 24th as ‘Jo Koy Day’.

As one of today’s premiere stand-up comics Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings performing at a Las Vegas coffee house. The hugely relatable comic pulls inspiration from his family, specifically, his son. Koy started 2020 with a bang with four sold out shows and selling over 25,000 tickets at both the Chase Center in San Francisco and The Forum in Los Angeles. He continues selling-out and breaking records at some of the most prestigious venues around the world.

He was given the prestigious “Stand-Up Comedian of The Year” award at the 2018 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. He has had four highly rated and successful comedy specials on Comedy Central and Netflix. In June 2020, the comedian released his first variety special, Jo Koy: In His Elements on Netflix. Koy brings the laughs and beats to Manila, spotlighting local culture in a one-of-a-kind show featuring Filipino American comedians, DJs, and B-boys. His 2019 Netflix special, Comin’ In Hot, is also streaming world-wide.

In 2019, the comedian reached #1 on the Billboard Charts for his stand-up comedy album, Live from Seattle. He can also be heard on his weekly podcast, The Koy Pond with Jo Koy by Starburns Audio. Walk thru metal detectors at all entrances of the facility; all patrons will walk through a metal detector prior to gaining access to the arena. If needed, security will perform pat downs on patrons in addition to the metal detectors.

Pre-sale will begin 13th June at 10AM, and tickets go on-sale 14th June at 10AM and will be available to purchase at  smtickets.com  and its outlets.

Watch the incredibly   talented   teen finalists of our Regional   Next Narrative Monologue Competition   perform new monol ogues by America’s leading Black playwrights on the Leo K.   s tage.   The top two winners will be flown to the National Finals in New York City , representing our region as they compete to perform at the iconic Apollo Theater.

Plus, enjoy the new play,   The State of the Students   by Rachel Atkins , performed by more talented youth actors, while the monologue competition judges deliberate.

The event will be ASL interpreted on House Right.
