Eurostar offers high-speed train travel between the U.K., Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany. Its trains can reach 186 mph, which means a train from London to Paris takes only 2 hours and 16 minutes. Eurostar merged with Thalys — another European high-speed train company — in 2023.

Taking a Eurostar train between these five countries can be more seamless than flying because you get a solid baggage allowance and don’t need to deal with airports, liquid restrictions in your carry-on and long security lines.

Here’s what you need to know about Eurostar’s destinations, cabin classes, lounges, loyalty program, amenities and pricing.

Eurostar offers direct train service to London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Netherlands. For all other destinations, you must connect to a different train, potentially with another carrier.

The fastest train journeys are the following:

Paris to Brussels - 1 hour, 22 minutes.

London to Lille, France - 1 hour, 22 minutes.

London to Brussels - 1 hour, 53 minutes.

Brussels to Amsterdam - 1 hour, 53 minutes.

London to Paris - 2 hours, 16 minutes.

London to Rotterdam - 3 hours, 13 minutes.

Paris to Amsterdam - 3 hours, 20 minutes.

Paris to Cologne - 3 hours, 20 minutes.

London to Amsterdam - 3 hours, 52 minutes.

Depending on where you’re headed, taking the train may take less total time than flying. For example, the train from London to Paris takes 2 hours and 16 minutes, while a flight takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. Though the train takes almost an hour longer, other factors involved with flying, including early airport arrival, travel time to/from the airport, security and boarding, make the train the faster option.

The Eurostar operates out of St. Pancras International Station, located in central London and easily accessible by several tube (underground) lines and buses. By contrast, London’s main airports, Heathrow Airport and London Gatwick Airport, are located outside the city and can take an hour or more to get to depending on where you’re traveling from and your mode of transport.

Furthermore, Eurostar’s rules are arguably more traveler-friendly than those of airlines. On even the cheapest tickets, Eurostar allows adults to bring two pieces of luggage and one carry-on with no weight limit. Children can bring one piece of luggage and one carry-on.

You also don’t have to worry about paying for a seat or dealing with liquid restrictions. You can make fee-free changes to your ticket as many times as you like until seven days before departure. Ticket changes within seven days of departure incur a $40 fee unless you’re in Business Premier.

Club Eurostar is Eurostoar’s loyalty program and you can sign up for a free account to start earning points. You earn 1 point per $1 spent on Eurostar tickets. Train + hotel packages also earn points, albeit at a lower rate (1 point per $2).

Eurostar has four membership levels, and with each increasing level you earn more points on travel and get access to additional perks.

All levels can pool points with friends and family, use points to pay a portion of their tickets and upgrade their seats from Standard to Standard Premier/Comfort. If you’re going for elite status with Eurostar, the biggest advantages are companion vouchers, lounge access and priority benefits when traveling.

Rewards can be used for as low as 100 points on various experiences from free tickets to upgrades.

Eurostar offers different travel classes, and these travel classes vary by destination. All trains offer Wi-Fi, but in my experience, the Wi-Fi has been awful, with upload and download speeds of less than 1 Mbps.

Trains to/from London

A Eurostar train to/from London offers three travel classes: Standard, Standard Premier and Business Premier. All seats offer U.K. and EU plug sockets. You can also choose your seat when traveling on this route.

Standard: This travel class offers the lowest priced tickets and food and drinks are available for purchase.

Standard Premier: You get free magazines and a more spacious seat, along with a light meal and drinks.

Business Premier: You get the same seat as in Standard Premier, plus additional perks including three pieces of luggage, a carry-on, hot meals created by Raymond Blanc OBE served with champagne, free newspapers and magazines and a dedicated fast-track ticket gate. You also get access to Eurostar lounges and NS International lounges.

Trains between Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany

When traveling between Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany, there are three travel classes: Standard, Comfort and Premium. All seats include EU plug sockets.

You also have access to Eurostar’s taxi booking service, which allows you to arrange transport to/from the train station. Unfortunately you cannot choose your seat when traveling between these destinations.

Standard : This travel class has the cheapest tickets. Food and drinks are not included but can be purchased onboard.

Comfort : You get a more spacious seat, but still need to pay for food and drinks. Comfort seats have access to premium Wi-Fi, but I found that Wi-Fi to be just as slow as in Standard class.

Premium : You have the same seat as in Comfort class and some additional perks including a gourmet cold meal served at your seat, access to Eurostar lounges and NS International lounges. 

The Eurostar amenities you receive depend on which class you travel in. You receive a complimentary meal in Premium, Standard Premier or Business Premier. Those in Business Premier (only available on London routes) receive three-course meals created in collaboration with Michelin-star chef Raymond Blanc OBE. Passengers in Premium get a meal designed by Belgian chef Frank Fol.

Passengers in other travel classes don’t receive a complimentary meal but can purchase drinks or snacks from the Eurostar Cafe.

Travelers in Premium can visit the Eurostar lounge in Paris and Brussels, and NS International lounges in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Those traveling in Business Premier can use the lounge in London, Paris and Brussels.

Club Eurostar elites traveling on any fare class can access certain lounges depending on their elite status:

Avantage, Carte Blanche and Etoile members : Eurostar lounge in Brussels and Paris.

Carte Blanche and Etoile members : Eurostar lounge in London, Paris and Brussels; DB lounges in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Essen; NS International lounges in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Schiphol airport; Railteam lounges in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria.

Check each lounge’s information page for opening hours. Generally, you can expect to find various seating spaces, complimentary newspapers and magazines, free Wi-Fi as well as food and drinks to enjoy.

Eurostar allows you to book tickets up to 120 days in advance, and the sooner you book the better. You’ll generally find the cheapest tickets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Since you can change your ticket fee-free as many times as you want until seven days before departure, you might as well book as soon as possible.

Is it cheaper to fly or take Eurostar?

The answer to this question depends on how far in advance you purchase your ticket, your day of travel, whether you need to pay for luggage, and the difference in costs between traveling to the airport and to a Eurostar train station.

Although the cheapest flight is $13 less than the train, bag fees are not included in that price. And since Eurostar stations are generally more centrally located, your overall cost may be cheaper on the train after factoring in a rideshare or taxi to the airport.

Eurostar began operating in 1994 and is one of Europe's most well-known high-speed train services. The train currently offers direct service to London; Paris; Brussels; Rotterdam, Netherlands; and Amsterdam.

Further connecting Eurostar services will take you to Antwerp, Belgium; Liege, Belgium; Dusseldorf, Germany; Duisburg, Germany; Essen, Germany; and Dortmund, Germany.

In addition to operating its own trains, Eurostar serves as a connecting rail service for other high-speed carriers to destinations like Disneyland Paris.

What are the different ticket types for Eurostar trains?

The fare classes on Eurostar come in three tiers. The lowest and most affordable is Standard, which is the equivalent of coach or economy class with an airline.

Next up is Standard Premier, which is akin to premium economy. Finally, there's Business Premier, which is Eurostar's version of business class.

The fare classes are broken down as follows:

With regards to pricing, the cost of fares in Standard and Standard Premier fluctuates based on seasonality, peak periods and destination. Business Premier, on the other hand, remains fairly consistent year-round in terms of pricing. Eurostar tickets can usually be booked up to 330 days before your return travel date.

Generally speaking, if you're considering a trip from London onward, you can expect prices to fall somewhere within the following margins for a one-way trip:

If you're looking to snag a bargain, it's worth keeping your eye out for flash sales, which Eurostar regularly runs throughout the year, often with tickets for as little as 30 British pounds (around $38).

How do Eurostar trains compare to flying?

Compared to flying to your destination and transiting through European airports, traveling via Eurostar is much more low-stress.

The most obvious difference is the security experience, which, compared to that at an airport, is effortless, with no removal of liquids or large electric items. Although queues can mount up during busy periods, we've found that we're through security in under 10 minutes when we travel with Eurostar.

Check-in is similar to airport check-in in that you must show your ticket and passport at a desk or kiosk. London's St. Pancras International Station , however, is currently testing biometric face scans , which may make checking in even faster.

Regarding lounge access, it's worth noting lounges are only available at the St. Pancras, Paris Gare du Nord and Brussels Midi/Zuid stations.

If you're used to airline-run business-class airport lounges, you may need to lower your expectations somewhat here. Although comfortable and pleasant, the lounges are somewhat basic — don't expect too much in the way of food.

On board the Eurostar, it's like most modern trains you may have taken at home. The differences between Standard Premier and Business Premier are nominal. You'll get slightly more legroom and a slightly more modern seat in both classes than in Standard.

What you're paying for in these classes is the luggage allowance and food service. If you don't deem either of those things a huge must-have, you'll be more than comfortable in Standard.

That said, the food service on the Eurostar is much better than on most airplanes and currently features a menu designed by the renowned Raymond Blanc. Champagne and coffee services are also served free of charge in Business Premier.

How to book the Eurostar train with credit cards

Travel on Eurostar, booked directly with Eurostar or through an online travel provider, should be coded as travel.

The following credit cards offer bonus points for travel expenses, along with strong welcome bonuses:

How to earn points and miles for Eurostar trains

Eurostar operates its own loyalty program named Club Eurostar. For every British pound spent (about $1.27), you will earn 1.2 points. This means you earn around 1 point per $1 spent.

Elite members receive the following points bonuses when booking:

• Carte Blanche: 50%
• Etoile: 75%

Eurostar tickets can now be booked through the Uber app , and you will earn 10% back in Uber credits on Eurostar bookings and National Rail train tickets in the U.K.

Additionally, you can earn 10% back when you purchase your coach tickets with the following U.K. operators: National Express and Megabus. If you decide to opt out of taking public transit, you can also hire a car from Avis, Hertz and other companies in your Uber app. When you book your trip, you'll receive £10 off (about $12).

You can also transfer 2,000 Accor Live Limitless points and receive 300 Eurostar points.

How to redeem points and miles for Eurostar trains

You can redeem 2,000 Club Eurostar points for a round-trip ticket in Standard class (or 4,000 points for a Standard Premier ticket), though these tickets are limited. For 1,000 more points, you can book any Standard or Standard Premier seats available.

A round-trip ticket can easily cost over $200 in Standard class (and double this at peak periods), making Club Eurostar points very valuable.

Business Premier tickets are available for 6,000 points round-trip for any available seat (saver-level space is not offered).

A one-way upgrade from Standard to Standard Premier is 600 points.

If you don't wish to redeem Club Eurostar points for train travel, you can transfer 500 Eurostar points and receive 1,000 Accor points .

You can redeem Virgin points through Virgin Red for the following Eurostar vouchers:

E urostar has been whizzing travellers across northern Europe for nearly 30 years via a rail network that connects France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK. Its high-speed trains can reach 186mph, dropping to 100mph when travelling through the Channel Tunnel; and are often a more convenient option when pitted against planes. Most stations are right in the middle of the city, you don’t pay for luggage and there aren’t any liquid restrictions. Where does the Eurostar go?

Direct trains link London to Paris , Brussels , Amsterdam and Rotterdam . You can connect in any of the European stations and travel to other destinations across France , Belgium , the Netherlands and Germany . Some of the most popular journeys include connecting at Lille for Disneyland Paris; and taking the ski train from Lille in winter. Station refurbishments in Amsterdam Centraal are due to take place for six months from June 14, 2024. This will mean limited Eurostar trains from London to Amsterdam, and no direct services from Amsterdam to London during this time. That said, it will still be possible to make return journeys to the Netherlands via Eurostar, albeit with a longer journey back to England. There will be three daily services from London to Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The return journey from Amsterdam to London will require passengers to take a connecting service in Brussels-Midi, with a wait time that Eurostar estimates will be between 48min and 1hr 48min. When the refurbishment is complete, a new cross-channel terminal will allow for more regular, direct trains between the two cities.

How early should I arrive for the Eurostar?

Eurostar recommends that you get to London St Pancras around 1hr 15min before departure. This will give you enough time to clear security and passport control (for both the UK and France), and then wait in the departure lounge until the platform is announced. It’s best to stock up on food and drink in St Pancras station as the choice is limited inside the Eurostar terminal. If you’re travelling in Business Premier you can enter via a fast-track entrance so arriving an hour before will leave you with plenty of time to clear security and board the train.

How long does the Eurostar take?

Most journeys from London to Paris take 2hr 16min but some can be as long as 2hr 37min. The Eurostar typically takes 1hr 53min to Brussels; 1hr 22min to Lille; and 3hr 52min to Amsterdam.

What’s the difference between the classes on Eurostar?

There are three classes to choose from — Standard, Standard Premier and Business Premier. The difference between Standard and Standard Premier is that in the latter seats are slightly bigger and you’ll get a light meal and drinks served to your seat. In Business Premier you get a three-course meal, designed by Raymond Blanc, served with a glass of champagne and other hot and cold drinks throughout the journey. You can use the Business Premier lounges with free snacks, drinks and newspapers, use the fast-track gates and your ticket has more flexibility: there are no fees to exchange or cancel.

How much luggage can you take?

There’s no limit on weight and each bag can be up to 85cm at its widest points. Passengers in Standard or Standard Premier can take two pieces of luggage and one piece of hand luggage while those in Business Premier can take three pieces of luggage and one piece of hand luggage. Children can take one piece of luggage and one piece of hand luggage. You can book separate spaces for bikes. Musical instruments should be in a case up to 85cm long. Is there a café onboard?

Yes, you can buy drinks, meals and snacks in Café Métropole, which is reasonably priced. You’re also welcome to bring food and drinks with you on board.

Can you take liquids on Eurostar?

Yes, unlike on flights there’s no limit on the quantity of liquids you can take on board.

What items are not allowed on Eurostar?

Among the items prohibited on Eurostar are unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and some relics from world war sites such as historical weapons, munitions and explosive devices; plus certain inflammable substances, flick knives, gardening equipment and furniture, e-scooters and perishable items such as fish, meat and dairy products. Other items, including authorised firearms, some DIY tools and cut flowers and plants, are restricted. You can find out more about prohibited and restricted items here .

You cannot bring alcohol on board in excess of the Eurostar alcohol policy . This policy limits passengers to a few unopened bottles of alcohol to take to their destination. Alcohol consumption on board the Eurostar is limited to four bottles or cans of beer or one bottle of wine per person. Large bottles of spirits cannot be consumed on board. Passengers who want to bring back large quantities of alcohol on their return must contact a courier service.

Can children travel for free?

Children under four can travel for free if they can sit on an adult’s lap for the whole journey. If they need their own seat you’ll need to buy a child ticket. In terms of luggage, you can take one pushchair and one car seat per child for no extra cost. Café Métropole is on board and handy if your little one wants to move around during the journey. Child tickets, for those aged from four to 11, are 30 per cent cheaper in Standard and Standard Premier. Eurostar also offers discounted youth fares for those aged from 12 to 25 but these are currently not available for trips to and from London.

Does Eurostar have wi-fi?

Yes, there’s free wi-fi throughout the train, though the signal can be patchy because it relies on mobile data — especially when going through tunnels. Head to settings, wi-fi, select EurostarTrainsWiFi and register your details when on board.

Can dogs go on the Eurostar?

No, only guide dogs are allowed on board.

How can I get cheap Eurostar tickets?

Adult single tickets start from £39 and it’s usually a case of the earlier the better when it comes to booking, particularly if you want to travel over a weekend or on a bank holiday. Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be the cheapest days to travel. Eurostar advises that you book four months in advance for the best prices. You can change your tickets for free up to seven days before departure, so if you do need to change dates, or see a cheaper price, it’s easy to amend your booking.

How far in advance can you book Eurostar?

You’ll typically be able to book Eurostar tickets up to 330 days in advance of your return travel date.

Are Eurostar tickets refundable?

It depends which class of ticket you’ve booked. Standard and Standard Premier tickets are non-refundable but you can change your ticket without an exchange fee up to seven days before the departure of your original train. You will need to pay the difference in fare. If you want to change your train within seven days of the departure date you’ll need to pay a £30 exchange fee for Standard or £40 for Standard Premier, as well as any difference in fare. This is per person, per leg of the journey and you can make any changes on the “manage your booking” section of the Eurostar site, if this is where you booked your original tickets. If you need to make a change in person or over the phone there will be a £10 service charge.

The most flexible tickets are Business Premier. If you need to cancel your journey you can get a refund up to 60 days after your planned departure, but this doesn’t include routes to the Netherlands. Standard Premier bookings and exchanges can be made over the phone or at the station.

The service runs from London St Pancras International Train station (situated in North London) to Paris Gare Du Nord.

The cost of Eurostar train tickets are variable throughout the year and the day/time of travel. At the time of research (Feb 2023) there are considerable fluctuations in the cost for Standard and Standard Premier seats. Business Premier seats had minimum cost variations.

The cheapest prices found were travelling 7 weeks in advance. (On the official site it states advance booking can be available up to 330 days in advance of travel)

An approximate ticket cost is:

• Eurostar Standard Class – From £39 one-way (first train midweek)
• Eurostar Standard Premier – From £84 one-way (first train midweek)
• Business Premier – All journeys were £275 one-way

Tip: I noticed when checking for the cheapest prices as above that 24 hours later the prices had increased substantially. If you see a price you are happy with – don’t delay!

Information for your journey depending on your class of ticket

• Arrive as early as possible – the times given are a guide only.
• Download your train tickets for the most up-to-date recommended arrival time for your booking.

For departures from London St Pancras International to the Gare du Nord recommendation at present (Feb 2023) is to arrive at the station around 90 mins before the train’s scheduled departure. (60/75 mins for passengers who require special assist)

Standard and Standard Premier gates close 30 mins before departure at St Pancras International.

• Drinks and snacks are available from the Café Metropole on the train (or alternatively purchase snacks in the departure lounge cafes and shops before you board)
• Services consist of old and new trains.
• Free WiFi and power sockets are available.
• Baby changing facilities are available on all services though not in all coaches.
• Unlimited ticket exchanges up to 7 days prior to departure (you pay the fare difference – see t&c’s)
• Eurostar Carte Blanche, Classique and Avantage members check for membership variations.

Arrive at the station around 90 mins before the train’s scheduled departure. Ticket gates close 30 mins before departure.

• Extra space at the seats.
• Power sockets at all seats.
• Seat service of a light meal and drinks. Menu is appropriate to the day/time of travel.

Premier ticket holders should arrive at the station 45 to 60 minutes before the scheduled train departure time. The gate closes 15 minutes prior to departure.

• Magazines/newspapers.
• Dedicated fast track ticket gates
• Seat service, on board, 3-course meal. The menu is appropriate to the day/time of travel.

Luggage Size

All adults travelling can take two pieces of luggage (3 in Business Premier) that are:

• Up to 85cm long.
• And one small piece of hand luggage.
• No weight limit but you must be able to carry and lift your own bag safely.
• No fluid restrictions.

Children travelling on a child ticket can take 1 piece of luggage and 1 piece of hand luggage.

If you are catching an early train (or arriving back in London on a late train from Paris) the best option (if you are not already in London) is to stay as close as possible to St Pancras Station. (Read my guide to using public transport in London if you are unsure about how to get to St Pancras)

We found ourselves in this situation a few years ago when we decided to pop over to Paris for my birthday and had booked the early train.

After looking at many hotels we settled on the Hotel Megaro , which is across the road from the station. We had a lovely stay (and have subsequently stayed there again) and I was particularly impressed with the staff (and the bubbly and cake they surprised me with once they knew it was my birthday!)

On subsequent visits we have stayed at the Pullman , located next to the British Library and a 4 minute walk from St Pancras International.

• On arriving at the ticket gate all passengers need to:
• Scan the ticket bar code at the ticket gate bar code reader. Some paper tickets do not have a bar code, so you have to check in at one of the service desks.
• Through to security, bag checks. As you would find at an airport. Speed of this can depend on the time of the day or how early/late you are arriving at security before your train departs.
• Passport control – Speed as above.
• Though to the departure lounge, and relax before your train leaves.
• Tax-free shops available.
• Cash machines are available for Pound and Euro currency.
• Check departure boards for your train. This will show the following information
• Train ID (usually 4 digits) and departure time, should match your train ticket.
• Train boarding time and train departure platform.
• Don’t rush to board as soon as the train boarding opens, there is plenty of time.
• Board the train and find your seat. There are usually coach attendants around near the train doors who will direct you to the correct seat in your coach.
• Disabled access can be arranged – contact Eurostar staff or arrange in advance.

TIP: There is always a Eurostar staff member or two at the gates ready to help passengers with any problems. Do not be afraid to ask.

• Coaches are clearly marked to check you have the correct one, seat ranges are also clear at the door into the coach. Check your seat number and board the coach from the right end. This reduces the need to carry your luggage down the entire coach.
• Free magazines and daily newspapers are available for your use as you get on the train.
• Only sit in your designated seat prior to departure. The train may have further stopping points where more passengers will board.

• Train station is located on Pancras Road, London NW1.
• Easy links to the UK rail network at different part of the same station and adjacent Kings Cross train station with ticket offices and ticket machines, also tourist information services.
• London Underground ‘tube’ has underground station at St Pancras, easy access to Eurostar services.
• Excellent selection of coffee shops/bars and restaurants to be found at St Pancras train station, also small express supermarket shops like Marks and Spencer.
• British souvenir and beauty shops to be found in the station concourse.
• Left luggage and lost property services available.

TIP: Do not rush into through the ticket barriers into the station, if time allows, take your time to look around and enjoy the station architecture, statues and the shops.

• Quick exit off the train after arriving at the station.
• No further passport checks, exit straight off the train into the main station concourse.
• Paris Gare Du Nord station is the centre of Paris, instead of air travel where airports are around 1 hour or more outside the city.
• Easy access to bus and RER services and Paris Metro underground system.
• Ticket offices and machines for travel information and ticket purchases for Metro, RER and bus services.

GOOD TO KNOW: You can purchase a book of Paris Metro (RER and bus) tickets on board the Eurostar from the Café Metropole in books of 10 (called a carnet) prior to the Paris.  This makes life a lot easier in Paris if you are pushed for time or if you are unsure of how to buy tickets) Note that this will end in 2025!

Eurostar tickets are more flexible than ever: here's how the new rules affect your next European escape

Train or plane? Sustainable travel practices are more important than ever, but each option has its own unique set of pros and cons – while train travel is better for the planet, it's often far more expensive than flying, for example.

Now, Eurostar ’s latest news has tipped the balance in train travel’s favour, as the company announces one of Europe 's most flexible international travel experiences. Until recently only passengers in premium cabins had the ultimate freedom to alter travel plans according to busy and demanding schedules. Now, this is changing following the announcement of flexible fares as standard across all travel.

From November 2024, Eurostar's travel classes will be renamed to Eurostar Standard, Eurostar Plus and Eurostar Premier. Each class still mirrors the current set-up. Eurostar Standard is the most economical way to travel, with drinks and light bites available to purchase from the café on board.

Eurostar Plus passengers enjoy more comfortable seating, more workspace, and a meal, while the greatest benefits of travelling in Eurostar Premier include elevated food service, access to lounges, and the use of a dedicated priority lane on cross-channel routes. Generous baggage allowances, free seat bookings, and free Wi-Fi apply to all travel classes.

Eurostar Standard and Eurostar Plus passengers can exchange tickets without a fee as many times as required until just one hour before departure. Unused tickets can be refunded up to seven days before departure. Customers in Eurostar Premier can exchange in the same way, and fee-free refunds are available up to two days after the scheduled departure.

The new rules apply to tickets booked after Tuesday 23 April 2024; bookings made before this date are subject to the terms and conditions stated at the time of booking.

Sales for the unified travel classes are open now and apply to journeys after Monday 4 November 2024.

In a statement, Matthieu Quyollet, Chief Business Development & Integration Officer, said, “Eurostar is setting new standards for international travel by providing the greatest flexibility, clarity and comfort to customers looking to enjoy Europe in the most sustainable way. The new aftersales policy across all of Eurostar’s travel classes means that all customers can now take advantage of more flexibility and choice than ever before and enjoy a unique travel experience for their summer holiday or autumn break.”

This isn’t the only change for Eurostar in recent months. A new-look website and app launched in autumn 2023 alongside Club Eurostar, a rewards programme that allows points to be used to discount journeys, upgrade seats and more.

Eurostar VS Flying: Pros & Cons Review

That is, of course, until the UK announced rail strikes and I had to scramble to leave a day early. Not Eurostar’s fault, just saying!

What I found surprised me in some ways, delighted me in others, and left me thinking that Eurostar certainly knows their core customers in one way, but that it doesn’t fit for everyone. If you are pondering a future trip, here are a few thoughts to consider.

Eurostar vs Flying: Journey Time

A Eurostar from London to Paris takes about 2h 30m, whereas a flight takes circa one hour. That’s a pretty zoomed out view, and details matter here in terms of overall time and approach.

Eurostar requests non-business class passengers arrive circa 1 hour before departure and clear the gates at least half an hour before. It can get crowded and queues can get long, so this is advisable. Business class is given a bit more leeway.

Pro tip: Eurostar passengers complete French immigration in London, before the journey which means although you need to arrive a bit earlier than you might hope, there’s absolutely no queue or formalities to attend to on arrival. Plus, you arrive in the city, rather than the airport well outside.

Flying, mosts passengers would need to arrive at the airport with more than 60 minutes to spare, unless they’re departing from a super convenient airport like London City.

Which Is Faster: Eurostar or Flying?

The flight is significantly shorter than the Eurostar journey, at less than half the transit time, but on arrival you’ve got immigration and a ride into the city to contend with. All in, I’d say they actually average out to be similar journey times.

Hour arrival before flight, hour in the air, hour to get through immigration and into the city of Paris for a total of three hours. Give or take 30 minutes on either side.

Hour before train, 2h 30m on the train and then that’s pretty much it, with Eurostar.

Bags & Fees Make A Big Difference

If you ask me, the Eurostar customer is the business centric crowd, and people on short, or day leisure trips. The experience is very good if you’re not bringing full sized bags. If you are, it gets a bit disjointed.

Fun fact: Eurostar doesn’t charge for kids under four (it says three at booking), which gives families “free” tickets a year longer than flying, when children start being charged from the age of two.

Unlike when you fly, your bags stay with you on a Eurostar journey. After you clear security and immigration, you still need to bring them with you into the waiting area or lounge, and wheel them onto the train. You also need to carry them up the train steps.

It’s a non-detail for people traveling without bags, but if you do need bags for any reason, I found it to be a significant annoyance. I love dropping bags off at check in for a flight and not worrying about them until the other side.

If you’ve got bags…

Lugging bags around, and then through the mad crowd rush to get to the train was just not fun, and then having to find space for them on the train was a pain too. Sans bags, the train is a treat.

If you’re checking bags and traveling heavy for any reason, you may prefer the plane. I complained to my poor partner at least a few times about lugging them around.

The only remaining question at that point, is whether you’d need to pay extra to bring bags on the flight, as opposed to free on Eurostar.

The Better Seat?

Without question, Eurostar provides a more comfortable journey experience on board. With trips taking more than twice the time in transit, it should — and it does.

Seats are flexible for different needs and an economy premier ticket on Eurostar gets access to what’s effectively the business class experience, just without the lounge and food.

The table of four in Business Premier allowed our small group to face each other and stretch out comfortably. For any families or working groups, these are great offerings.

If you’re really hampered by airline seats, Eurostar comfort is definitely a bit nicer, but personally I can stomach most seats for an hour, and even this comfy seat got a bit old after more than two.

Food, Drinks and Service

With a longer travel time, service feels friendlier and less rushed on Eurostar than on an airline. Of course, that’s only in business class. European airlines have ditched any real economy service, other than buy on board offerings, or a modest water.

Similarly, Eurostar customers in basic economy can purchase their own snacks — and economy premier gets a light meal. Business Premier gets a nice “multi course” meal, which is a fancy way of saying a tray with a few different things on it.

The food was decidedly nice on Eurostar, but I’ve had many comparable meals in British Airways Club Europe, particularly with the newer catering arrangements. That serves pretty much to say: don’t let food or beverage sway you, unless you’re bringing your own.

If you are bringing your own, Eurostar is a massive advantage, since you can bring liquids with you and you’re welcome to toast yourself with whatever you like. Flying, you of course would hit the 100ml liquid restriction at airport security.

I do think, apples to apples, Eurostar was serving slightly better wine than most airlines serve in European business class. To me, it’s a non starter in decision terms though. A glass is just a “glass” in either experience. Nothing remarkable.

Gare Du Nord Still Sucks

The French love to talk about how much better the area around Paris Gare Du Nord Train Station is now, but I wouldn’t put too much stock into it.

It’s better than it was, but it’s still just a sea of scammers and opportunists trying to charge 3X the rates Uber charges for rides, with pickpockets on every corner. Walk a few blocks away from the station and hail a ride there for the easiest journey.

I figured this was worth mentioning, because it still left us with a 15-20 minute journey into the Vendôme area and that somewhat offsets the gripe about landing at outside of the city at an airport circa 45 mins away. At least it’s orderly!

Which Is Better: Eurostar Or Flying?

With no bags and no airline elite status to speed your way through the airport, Eurostar is a very solid choice for economy passengers. For businesspeople traveling on day trips sans luggage, it’s also a fantastic option.

If you have bags, I think flying is tough to beat. If you have elite status with an airline that entitles you to lounge access and security fast tracks, I think I’d still pick flying over Eurostar too.

If I can cut it fine on departure before a flight, arriving without bags just 60 minutes prior to departure — or about 40 minutes in my case — I can make it to Paris quickly. I like the views from the sky and I enjoy the orderly process of boarding, compared to the Eurostar free for all.

It all depends on the timing needs and journey specifics of your trip. Eurostar may fit your schedule better. Leaving from a city location may save you time, depending on where you live.

Both are great options, and if you factor these features in, you’ll make the right choice.

I took the Eurostar from London to Paris on Thursday 2nd June this year and it was a mess. I had gone past the station a few days earlier and noticed a line of people stretching out of the station along the street and around the back of the station and on the TV that night they mentioned it and what caused it. Fast forward a few days and I arrive at the station nearly three hours before my departure and am told I cannot join the check in line until they open it about an hour or so before the scheduled departure. I waited until about 90 minutes before my scheduled departure and made my way to what I thought was the end of the line only to find out that the line like the other day stretched out the back of the station and to make matters worse the line snaked around two or three times in places. There were staff on hand who kept advising everyone they would make their train. The line took ages as while it moved quickly at times it then just stopped for 5-10-15 minutes and we were told the security area was overwhelmed and had to clear a bit before more people could go through. Our departure time came and went and we still hadn’t gone through passport but about 20 minutes after our departure time we went through and got to our train which they said was delayed due to a fatality on the line in France. Had it not been for this unfortunate fatality we would not have made the train at all. In the end we were just over 60 minutes late arriving in Paris which wasn’t the end of the world and they announced that as we were 63 minutes late we were entitled to compensation and to check our emails 24 hours later. The service on the train was fine and they served a nice light meal with wine but the experience at St Pancras station was really bad, maybe not as bad as the chaos at the airports at that time but still not the relaxed and enjoyable experience it has been the other 3 or 4 times I have taken it.

One of the issues with the long, narrow lounge at St Pancras is that a lot of people fail to realize it also continues upstairs, running the same length as the ground floor part. I had been going there rather a while before I realized the stairs at either end weren’t, as I had assumed, solely just for toilets. And so it’s often jam-packed when it doesn’t need to be. Very easy return last Friday evening from Gare du Nord. Panic about arriving hours ahead to queue proved thankfully unfounded. Additionally, Business Premier ticket meant utterly delightful staff provided several shortcuts which I hadn’t encountered in a long time and were much appreciated, and so was in the big, airy lounge in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately a large, rowdy, loudly swearing group on the train who seemed to think they were on a drunken night out in a Wetherspoons – have never, ever experienced anything like this in normally silent Business Premier carriages before – made the journey extremely unpleasant for other passengers and the commendable staff alike. Several people who complained were moved rapidly to available seats in the next carriage.

Interesting how I completely disagree over the luggage. Only desperation would induce me to check a bag on an airline, especially now, so the fact that I can keep all my bags with me is a huge plus for Eurostar.

The lounge is so-so, but fast track security and passport control work like magic. Much quicker than when flying.

To the other commenter who arrived 3 hours before his train and was not allowed to check-in until 90mins ahead, your ticket clearly indicates your arrival time at the station and the gates never open until the 90 minute mark. And, while there have been one or two incidents of late trains recently because of backlogs at security, that hasn’t been as bad as my experience with airlines from Heathrow. Plus the compensation is pretty much automatic and definitely no-quibble: in fact, Eurostar suggest you apply.

Brussels Midi station is certainly in a rather dodgy part of town, but your ticket includes free train travel within Brussels.

Eurostar seats are numbered and with your ticket there is no scrabble for seats. The overhead luggage shelf is deep and takes large items although for heavy items you might need assistance from a fellow passenger. The train does not tilt so they will not fall. Plenty of space too for luggage at the entrance to the numbered coaches. The views form the train are more interesting than from a plane window. Take your own food as it it’s cheaper and probably better. Checkin area can get crowded if a train is late departing but the line moves quickly. Seats are firm but comfortable and a long walk to stretch your legs is feasible. Sometimes connections to other trains can be a bit tight time wise if you have to change at Lille for Amsterdam as an example. Seat number 61 is supposed to be the best seat but I have not experienced that yet. Avoid taxis at Paris. Usually long queues. Walk a block or two and then hail a cab with a green light, or take the Metro.

We opted to stay within walking distance of Gare du Nord in September and have our fingers crossed that at least the hotel we chose is safe enough. The E320 seats are awful even in Standard Premier.

I thought the Seating in Standard Premier on the renovated E300 was actually quite comfortable. My advice is to call and see which trains are running E300s and book accordingly. That said, you never know if you’ll get switched.

Getting a final price for a Eurostar package is just pot luck

For days now, every time I try to book, a pop-up menu adds £42

I have been trying for days to book a £520 train and hotel package to Lille in September via the Eurostar website. Each time I enter my card details and hit “continue” to pay, a pop-up window advises that the trip has increased by an extra £42. Each time I have cancelled the transaction and started again. Each day it’s still advertised at £520 on the Eurostar site, but the same price increase pops up when I try to pay. It seems Eurostar is counting on me not bothering to cancel and go through the booking process again. CB, Congleton, Cheshire

Eurostar seems to think that if it makes the right noises, customers will overlook shoddy service. “We prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff above all else,” it explained last week when asked to justify a new policy that prevents staff pushing the wheelchairs of passengers with disabilities.

Asked about this repeated last-minute price rise, it told me: “We prioritise providing a fast and seamless booking experience.” It went on to say that your experience had been a “rare occurrence” while simultaneously claiming accommodation prices, set by hotels, were “subject to frequent adjustments beyond our control”. It added that price changes during a transaction were the rarity, not price changes per se.

None of this makes sense. You say the last-minute price increase happened repeatedly over several days, so Eurostar had plenty of time to update the advertised cost. Back to Eurostar, which claims there are “many reasons” a price change is not reflected on the website.

Ji-won was mysteriously given the chance to rebuild her life in Marry My Husband , after which she decided not only to plot her revenge against her soon-to-be-husband but also to ditch everything that was hurting her. Ji-won built new friendships, stopped caring about pleasing everyone, and focused on her professional career instead of living for her fiancé. Ji-won regained control of her life after leaving an abusive marriage as part of a toxic family that also included an abusive mother-in-law. Her character arc in the time travel K-drama was the opposite of what Mi-so went through in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim .

In What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim , Park Min-young’s character is somewhat happy professionally but dreams of building a family and wants to focus more on her personal life. All Eurostar trains have modern, comfortable facilities, plenty of room for luggage, and onboard food and beverage carriage. Although there's no weight limit for your luggage on Eurostar trains, you must be able to carry your bags safely by yourself.

Each bag must be clearly labelled and must be no longer than 85 cm (for trains to and from the United Kingdom) or no larger than 75 x 53 x 30 cm (for trains in Europe).

Are you travelling to or from the United Kingdom? In Eurostar Standard Class, choose from a wide selection of drinks and snacks at the Eurostar Café, the onboard café-bar in the middle of the train. In Premium class, you'll get a free meal served directly to your seat.

Eurostar doesn't have an onboard entertainment portal. However, there is free WiFi available, as well as UK and EU plug sockets at your seat so you can charge your devices while travelling.

Children under 4 can travel free on Eurostar trains, as long as they're sitting on an accompanying adult's lap. Alternatively, buying a child ticket guarantees them their own seat.

You'll find changing tables on all Eurostar trains, as well as family-oriented seating (4 seats facing one another) where available.

Currently, only certain Eurostar trains running between London and Brussels can transport fully assembled bikes - contact Eurostar for more information. You can, however, take a foldable bike on board Eurostar trains to and from the UK provided that it's no more than 85 cm long and it fits in a protective bag that covers the whole bicycle. Folded bikes are treated as standard luggage.

For all other Eurostar trains in Europe, a limited number of non-foldable bikes can be brought on board, provided that the wheels are taken off and the whole bicycle is stored in a suitable cover (max. size 135 x 85 x 30 cm). Foldable bicycles are also allowed and count towards standard luggage limits.

The rules around travelling with your pets depend on whether you're travelling across the Channel or not, so check before you travel:

Eurostar trains to and from the United Kingdom:

• Pets are not permitted on board.
• Guide dogs and assistance dogs can travel, but they must be accompanied by their owner. You must also reserve a ticket for your assistance dog at least 48 hours before travel, by filling out Eurostar's contact form.

Trains in the rest of Europe:

• Small dogs and other pets weighing less than 6 kg can travel for free. They must travel in a cage or carrier (max. dimensions 45 x 30 x 25 cm).
• If your dog is larger than this, you must buy them a dog ticket (generally the price is fixed at €30, around £26), and the dog must travel on your lap or on the ground, on a lead and with a muzzle.
• Guide dogs and assistance dogs, whatever their size, travel for free.

If you need help getting on or off the train, you should contact Eurostar directly before your trip. To use Eurostar's special assistance program, fill in the contact form at least 48 hours before your journey so that the team can help you.

If you're travelling to/from the United Kingdom:

• Arrive at least one hour before your train's scheduled departure time, then head to the Eurostar Assist desk or ask a member of staff.
• If you have a wheelchair, you must reserve a wheelchair space in either Standard Premier or Business Premier - you'll only pay for a Standard Class ticket. Someone can travel with you at a discounted rate.

If you're travelling on red trains in the rest of Europe:

• Wheelchairs can be transported as long as they're no bigger than 70 cm long and 120 cm high. The wheelchair's turning circle must be no larger than 150 cm in diameter. The combined weight of the wheelchair, passenger and any luggage must not exceed 300 kg.
• Please note that combustion engine-powered wheelchairs are not permitted on board. However, electric wheelchairs are allowed.

Specific restrictions for trains to/from the United Kingdom:

• There's no restriction on liquids. However, there are restrictions on alcohol: you can take 4 bottles/cans of beer or 1 bottle of wine per person to enjoy on the journey, but large bottles of spirits are not permitted. If you're travelling with large quantities of alcohol, you should contact a courier service.

Sports equipment:

• You can travel with a golf bag as long as it's no larger than 120 x 35 x 35 cm.
• You can bring tents or other shelters if they're stored in bags or cases less than 85 cm long.
• Camping gas or butane bottles are not permitted on board.
• Camping utensils or tools such as pocket knives and Swiss army knives are permitted provided the blades are less than 75 mm long. Folding knives where the blade locks into place are prohibited.
• You can bring bats, snooker or pool cues and darts on board if they're stored in a protective case.

When you arrive at the station, please be sure to keep your ticket handy as you’ll need to scan it at the NS ticket gates to exit the station.
