This was a fabulous event, well done to Lidl for raising so much for charity and we got a free drink each on entry, which was a lovely surprise! The support act was great and KT did not disappoint! Loved it...Beach Ballroom was a great venue too.

Solid show last night from KT at the great venue Imperial Theatre in Vancouver. While KT is very talented in terms of the sound she can make, I was a little surprised she was all alone. Generally a few additional band members can make for a better show. Having said that the music was very enjoyable, she is a talker between songs which I dont really enjoy from everyone but her perspectives and humour added to the evening.

Good Gig ! Good to see her with a full band again, rather than a "loop" and they were a good band(I thought so anyway !!) She tell's stories and talk's a lot, perhap's too much ! (dare I say !) Put's effort in to it ! but came across as a bit of a tame "audience " night (not the place to record a "Live" show !) I was sitting near the back downstair's when this "Lass" came bounding over the seat's to get through some people along from me. It was "Cat" the drummer coming to meet her family, that was a bit different ! K T's voice still sound's excellent !

KT TUNSTALL Adds More Dates to North American Tour

The tour follows on the heels of a string of successful European dates KT just completed last weekend.

pixeltracker

GRAMMY®-nominated Singer/Songwriter KT TUNSTALL is ready to hit the road for a North American run of live shows beginning April 20th with four shows in eastern Canada before heading south to the U.S. - beginning on April 28th in Boston and following through hitting such markets as New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles and San Francisco before heading back to Canada and wrapping up on July 9th at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Ontario.

The tour follows on the heels of a string of successful European dates KT just completed last weekend. The upcoming U.S. shows mark Tunstall's first extended date tour here since 2019 and will support her recently released seventh studio album, NUT.

Known for her dynamic live performance, Tunstall's signature style skyrocketed her to fame when she appeared solo on the Jools Holland show performing her then new single, "Black Horse and The Cherry Tree" in 2004. See below for the full North American itinerary.

Tunstall rang in 2023 with a special New Year's Eve event opening for fellow singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile at a sold-out show at Portland, OR's Moda Center. This month, Tunstall is the featured artist on American Airlines flights as part of their Centre Stage program, a monthly audio and video highlight channel that is featured as part of American Airlines' on-board entertainment options.

Tunstall has always been a Songwriter with a singular knack for balancing introspective folk and propulsive rock, and as described by Americana Highways "...infectious dance beats".

NUT is an eclectic album that seamlessly weaves together disparate styles including the 80's new wave album focus track, "Demigod," whose meaning as Tunstall explains, harkens back to another iconic songwriter, "I spent an immeasurably inspiring time in the company of Stevie Nicks some years ago, and she fascinated me with her mixture of being so down-to-Earth, yet simultaneously completely ethereal.

'Nut' is also the name of the Goddess of the Sky in Ancient Egyptian mythology, so this song paints Stevie as that mythical Sky Goddess."

KT Tunstall burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multi-platinum debut, Eye to the Telescope, which spawned the global hits "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See." These songs established Tunstall as a captivating, must-see live performer, as well as an extraordinary Songwriter who captures both an introspective view while channeling her inner rock edge.

"I feel there are two immediate, recognizable pillars of my style," she says. "I have this troubadour, acoustic guitar-driven emotional side. Then there's definitely a rocker side of me with sharper teeth."

KT Tunstall announces North American tour

Trek supports latest album  Nut

KT Tunstall is ready to hit the road for a North American run of live shows beginning April 20th with four shows in eastern Canada before heading to the US beginning on April 28th in Boston. The tour follows on the heels of a string of European dates that begin in February, running through March, including 16 shows throughout The UK. The upcoming US shows mark Tunstall’s first extended date tour there since 2019 and will support her recently released seventh studio album, Nut . Known for her dynamic live performance, Tunstall’s signature style skyrocketed her to fame when she appeared solo on the Jools Holland show performing her then new single, “Black Horse and The Cherry Tree” in 2004.

Tunstall rang in 2023 with a special New Year’s Eve show opening for fellow singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile at a sold out Portland, OR’s Moda Center. In March, Tunstall will be the featured artist on American Airlines flights as part of their Centre Stage program, a monthly audio and video highlight channel that is featured as part of American Airlines’ on-board entertainment options.

Tunstall burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multi-Platinum debut, Eye to the Telescope , which spawned the global hits “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See.” These songs established Tunstall as a captivating, must-see live performer, as well as an extraordinary songwriter who captures both an introspective view while channeling her inner rock edge. “I feel there are two immediate, recognizable pillars of my style,” she says. “I have this troubadour, acoustic guitar-driven emotional side. Then there’s definitely a rocker side of me with sharper teeth.”

In the last few years, the Grammy-nominated Scottish musician has expanded on these musical selves by focusing on a trilogy of records, where each album zeroes in on a single concept: soul, body and mind. The first, 2016’s Kin , was the soul record; 2018’s Wax was the body record, and the new Nut is the mind record.

“ Nut is the culmination of a seven-year project,” Tunstall says. “It’s the final part of a trilogy of records that has spanned probably the most extreme and profound period of change in my life. The personal arc of these three records has been pretty extraordinary for me.”

k t tunstall tour

KT Tunstall has never been one for creative stasis. The Grammy® nominated Scottish Musician burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multi-platinum debut, Eye to the Telescope , which spawned the global hits “ Black Horse and the Cherry Tree ” and “ Suddenly I See. ” These songs, paired with her pioneering looping skills, established Tunstall as a captivating and dynamic mustsee performer, as well as a Songwriter with a singular knack for balancing introspective folk and propulsive rock.

“I feel there are two immediate, recognizable pillars of my style,” she says. “I have this troubadour, acoustic guitar-driven, emotional side. Then there’s definitely a rocker side of me with much sharper teeth.”

In the last few years, Tunstall has expanded on these musical selves by focusing on a trilogy of records, where each album zeroes in on a single concept: soul, body and mind. The first, 2016’s KIN, was the soul record; 2018’s WAX was the body record, and the new NUT is the mind record. “ NUT is the culmination of a seven-year project,” Tunstall says. “It’s the final part of a trilogy of records that has spanned probably the most extreme and profound period of change in my life. The personal arc of these three records has been pretty extraordinary for me.”

KT describes the album name; “Growing up in Scotland, if someone was losing their temper you would say, ‘Dinny lose yer Nut!’ I love that the word also means a seed. The album artwork is all about the brain being a garden; you reap what you sow, you need to keep the weeds at bay, and there is an almost supernatural beauty to when things blossom. But it all needs constant tending; it’s always changing and able to change.”

Tunstall started working on NUT at home during the pandemic lockdown, at the same time she was writing a musical. “I was writing songs for a full cast following a storyline, which I’d never done before,” she explains. “It’s exciting. You’re writing songs for all these different characters, it’s totally collaborative, prescriptive and structured writing.” But while words for this project came easily, lyrics for NUT were much more of a challenge.

“I found it so impossible to connect with the place in my subconscious, or creative consciousness, that produces my personal lyrics,” Tunstall says. “I just didn’t feel I had anything to say.” In hindsight, she chalked up this lack of lyrical conviction partly to not having a deadline (“I’m great under pressure; I’m very easily distracted if there isn’t an end point in sight”) but mostly due to the stress and tension unfolding in the world at large due to the pandemic.

“I’m a dreamer, and I’ve always been a dreamer,” she explains. “And to write lyrics, I have to allow myself to unhook from the day to day and go into this other realm. And I found that all through the pandemic, the present moment was holding on to the back of my shirt every minute and just would not let me go.”

She found her writing groove thanks to “ Canyons ,” a song propelled by a grimy, heavy rock riff. In keeping with NUT ’s theme, the song’s lyrics are about the canyon-like physiology of the brain, and explore the parallels between humans developing unique identities and the way nature evolves and is shaped over time. Elsewhere, NUT ’s lyrics and sound delve into KT’s own personal evolution, and the way our selves evolve through the repetition of behaviors and our responses to life experiences.

“ Private Eyes ” grew out of Tunstall’s brush with the vampiric downside of fame, while “ Three ,” summarizes the arc of the trilogy, inspired by a journal practice where she would write multiple entries on one topic from the different perspectives of mind, body and soul.

“I loved this ring-fencing of theme — I found it comforting and freeing at the same time,” she says. “I’d always visualized that when you come to make an album where you can write about anything, it can actually be more interesting if you’re limited; you have to dig down, dig deeper. I gave myself very clear parameters of what I was writing about.”

Tunstall also gave stylistic boundaries to NUT ’s music. She envisioned the songs based on patterns, and the idea of pattern learning and repetition. “I wanted to try and emulate the way that our brain works with what you are hearing. I knew from the outset that the album would center around rhythm.” Drawing on her love of West African grooves—she particularly admires the music of Guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Fela Kuti, Mali band Tinarawen, and Musical Director and Drummer Tony Allen—Tunstall focused on music with straightforward riffs and grooves. The bustling, beatheavy “ Synapse ” and the urgency, synth-driven “ I Am the Pilot ” in particular burst with explosive rhythms.

To Produce NUT , Tunstall enlisted Martin Terefe, one of her very close personal friends and longtime musical collaborators; in fact, he co-wrote her 2005 global hit “ Other Side of the World ” and has appeared on nearly every one of her studio albums. “We’re the perfect co-writing match,” she says. “We’ve always loved working together, but I’d never actually made a record with Martin Producing. On every other album I’ve made, I am in the room 16 hours a day, overseeing every single part, every sound. He’s probably the only person I know that I would be able to allow to work on one of my records without me being there!”

In the end, not only did Terefe Produce NUT , but he enlisted other Musicians, including Sneaker Pimps co-founder Liam Howe and Razorlight Drummer Andy Burrows, to replicate and build on Tunstall’s laptop demos. “Martin and I know each other so well and have such a great musical communication system, that he knows what I’m going to like—and he knows what I’m going to not like,” Tunstall says. “He would always give me a heads up on what he was doing, and tell me to have a listen and see what I thought if anything he was adding was a little bit more out there. So basically, he would allow me to brace myself if he’d done anything mad.”

Tunstall’s instinct to let him steer the project was entirely correct. NUT is an eclectic album that seamlessly weaves together disparate styles—the ’80s new wave throwback “ Demigod ” segues into the meditative Americana of “ All The Time ,” while the propulsive “ Out of Touch ” is brisk poprock with stacked vocal harmonies and perforated beats—and emphasizes Tunstall’s melodic and composition strengths.

“On my part, it required an enormous amount of letting go and relaxing my grip on my own music,” she says. “And I think the pandemic totally encouraged this shift, into me letting go of some of that control and allowing a much more collaborative experience to take place. Basically, when your world is turned upside down, you get perspective of what’s important and what’s not.”

In the last decade, Tunstall has become used to upheaval. In fact, when she started the trilogy, she was in a much different place—figuratively and literally. In 2015, Tunstall sold everything she owned and moved to California, a bold move that came at the end of a three-year period full of change and transitions. “I remembered feeling like I can either patch over the cracks, and try and make everything as similar and familiar as possible, or I could burn the shit to the ground and start again,” she says of that time. “And I went for the latter. It was a great decision.”

Among other things, she studied film composition with the Sundance Institute after needing a break from touring and recording. Making new albums was the furthest thing from her mind—a big change for someone who asked for a piano at the age of 4 and decided she wanted to be a SingerSongwriter by age 15. “I really had no idea what the future held at that point of personal change,” she says. “And it was certainly not a sure thing that I was going to keep making records. I’d ended up miserable after pursuing everything I’d wanted. I didn’t want to make music, I didn’t want to make records, I didn’t want to be in the public eye. It was the closest I’ve known to a personal breakdown, really.”

The trilogy that emerged in the wake of this period also came with challenges. “The first record, KIN , was absolutely a Phoenix out of the ashes,” Tunstall says. “It was the result of a profound personal shift, finding my feet again after some really hard shit.” Among other things, Tunstall’s father died—an event that made her realize she was unhappy in her marriage and led to divorce. More challenges awaited her upon the release of 2018’s WAX . “Halfway through the tour for WAX , I completely lost hearing in my left ear, which never returned,” she says. “I lost an extremely important physical part of my body during a record about the body.”

Tunstall was understandably wary about what might happen while making her ‘mind’ record, NUT . And of course, it came in the form of a global pandemic. However, now that the trilogy is complete, she has the perspective to appreciate the solace and healing she experienced as the songs unfolded. “I did not expect to be essentially documenting such an intense personal journey,” she says. “When I started, it was more observational fascination with the subject matter and a sense of personal interest. I did not predict how visceral an experience it would be making this music about myself. It became the audio accompaniment to a deeply transformative period of my life. It’s the soundtrack to me creating a new version of myself.”

In light of this personal evolution, it’s no wonder that NUT is such a step forward. However, it’s clear Tunstall relished leaving her comfort zone and trying something new. “I made NUT completely differently from any other record I have ever made,” Tunstall says. “But I wanted to do things differently. The reason I pursued music was because I had to avoid a repetitive job. I need to feel a constant sense of exploration in life. And I’ve realized you can absolutely fall into repetition even in this job. And so for NUT , I was like, ‘Come on, let’s do what we said we were going to do. Let’s push into something new.’ What’s most important is that I made an exciting, meaningful record that I love, and had fun while I was doing it.”

Roger Daltrey, at 80, readying for life after The Who: ‘Every dog has its day, and it was a wonderful ride’

Roger Daltrey of The Who August 28, 2023 in Sandringham, Norfolk, England.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer talks music, recalls laboring cutting sheet metal at 15, his painful mishaps twirling his microphone, and exactly what it would take to get him and The Who’s Pete Townshend to collaborate again

“ Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!”

Considering that he has devoted much of the past 60 years to his career as the lead singer in The Who, you wouldn’t expect to hear Roger Daltrey laughing uproariously over the apparent demise of the band long synonymous with his name. Especially not just a day after Who co-founder Pete Townshend stated in a podcast he was “not doing” a farewell tour that he himself had proposed only three weeks earlier.

But Daltrey, who performs a solo show May 6 at The Shell in San Diego, laughed so hard during an interview last week you might have thought he was watching a favorite film comedy. The singer’s long burst of “ha ha has” was in response to his interviewer noting that — more than anyone — Daltrey knows just how prone the mercurial Townshend is to changing his mind in a near-instant.

After pausing to contain his laughter, the veteran singer grew more serious.

“If Pete doesn’t want to tour, I don’t want to be back with The Who on the road, at 81, with someone who doesn’t want be there — if that’s what he’s saying,” said Daltrey who turned 80 on March 1. “But you know, every dog has its day and it was a wonderful ride.”

Whether this dog has truly had its day remains to be seen, particularly since Daltrey — in a 2000 San Diego Union-Tribune interview — referred to Townshend as “a habitual liar.”

Regardless, Townshend sounded less than enthused when he told the New York Times last month: “I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with The Who. If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ordinary lifestyle is pretty elevated.”

Such statements don’t encourage Daltrey to think another reunion trek seems feasible. With The Who down to two members — drummer Keith Moon died in 1978, bassist John Entwistle in 2002 — touring as a one-man version of The Who, minus Townshend, is not a viable option.

“I won’t do it with someone who is halfhearted about it,” Daltrey said. “The music is too important to me. The reason The Who was so powerful is because we meant it. We took your face off when we played; we didn’t swan about on stage.”

‘Putting me in a corner’

What if Townshend changes his mind and expresses enthusiasm to reunite with Daltrey for one final Who tour?

“You’re putting me in a corner,” he replied. “I’d be up for it if the reason Pete’s doing it isn’t just to make money. I’ll do it to make good music and to show people what we were, before we leave the stage forever. You can’t just half turn up for a tour.

“Singers can’t dial it in at concerts, because it shows immediately. I’m doing it because I love it, and it’s what I do ... I’ve got a voice and I want to use it. I have never toured only for the money. Yes, the money is very useful. But I couldn’t do it just for that; you can’t. You need to be passionate about what you do and you really need to connect with the audiences. If you don’t, you’re failing. “

But Daltrey’s San Diego concert will feature him sharing the stage with Townshend. That is, Simon Townshend — Pete’s younger brother — a longtime touring member in both Daltrey’s band and in The Who.

“I always use Simon Townshend; he’s been with me on my tours since 1994,” Daltrey said. “We go back a long way — I used to change Simon’s nappies! He’s a sweetheart and he’s a great musician. There’s something about his voice when we sing harmonies, because it’s a (Pete) Townshend derivative. We work great together and I love him dearly.”

In June, Daltrey and a predominantly British band will undertake a nine-city U.S. tour he is billing as “semi-acoustic.” It is designed to focus on songs from his solo albums, along with some Who favorites.

But Daltrey’s May 5 show at The Shell will — apart from him and Simon Townshend — feature an otherwise all-electric band of American musicians. And their repertoire will, he said, lean more towards Who songs than his solo work.

‘Kind of ridiculous’

Daltrey’s most recent concerts took place last month at London’s historic Royal Albert Hall, where six performances were held between March 18 and 24. They were held to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust, which has raised more than $39 million since he founded the charity organization in 2000. He is stepping down as its head this year but will still be involved.

Last month’s first two Royal Albert Hall concerts were headlined by The Who, in what may end up as the band’s final appearances. The concluding March 24 show included a version of The Who’s classic “Baba O’Riley” that featured vocals by Daltrey, Robert Plant and Pearl Jam singer (and former San Diegan) Eddie Vedder.

“My career has been ... kind of ridiculous, really, when I think of about it,” Daltrey said, speaking from his home in the English countryside. “There’s something in me, this identity, that only comes out when I’m singing. I just love singing, it’s as simple as that. I love connecting with my voice in a different way than when I’m speaking. I just love it!”

Daltrey discussed music and his ridiculous career with the Union-Tribune for nearly 45 minutes on April 17. Here are highlights from that conversation. His quotes have been edited for clarity and length.

Q: You turned 80 on March 1. So, happy belated birthday. Does music mean something more or different to you at 80 than when you were 20, 40 or 70?

A: No, it doesn’t. I’ve always sang — from the age of 6, when I started in the church choir — until now.

Q: How do you maintain your voice and how often do you practice?

A: I never practice. And I think, at the moment, I’m singing, possibly the best I ever have in my life. I had a very rough period in the late 1990s and early 2000s, where I had — it turned out I was OK — but it was a potential vocal cord cancer and I managed to get it sorted. I also managed to hear myself singing for the first time, which was a luxury for me. In the ‘60, ‘70s, and ‘80s, it seemed to be the mission of the rest of the band to drown me out. It felt like it anyway! They were so loud that it became hard work to hear myself.

Q: What happened that enabled you to hear yourself better?

A: In-ear (audio) monitors that let you get the mix you want — like, if the guitar’s too loud! — and always hear yourself. That makes an enormous difference to a singer. Also, and I didn’t realize it until the ‘90s, but I’d been deaf for a long time in my life. And I don’t think it was caused by the band.

When I think back on it, it was caused by working in a sheet metal factory when I was a teenager, grinding welds down every day, with no hearing protection. I think that’s what definitely took the top (range) out of my hearing, rather than the band. It’s one of those things I’ve managed to survive.

Q: How does your wearing hearing aids now factor in?

A: I kind of work with one in-ear monitor in one ear and the hearing aid in the other. You can manipulate them so that I get the best sound for hearing myself that I can on stage with this system. Fortunately.

Roger Daltrey performs in San Diego

Q: We spoke back in 1992 to preview the La Jolla Playhouse opening of “The Who’s ‘Tommy,” which you attended here. You told me at that time: “You can hear a big change in my voice before and after ‘Tommy.’ It’s like two different people. It was wonderful. It freed up my singing, and it gave me an identity.” Was there any direct or indirect cause and effect between “Tommy” coming out in 1969 — and freeing up your voice — and then making your first two solo albums, “Daltrey” in 1973 and “Ride a Rock Horse” in 1975?

A: No, not really. I mean, my solo albums came because The Who was having so many long hiatuses from touring in those days. Because Pete used to write all the material, and he used to take time off to write it. That, for the rest of the band, was extremely painful because we were playing at our peak and we wanted to be out there, on tour, doing what we do.

I was sitting on my hands and the solo stuff was just something to keep me singing, basically, as simple as that. But I’ve never, ever wanted to be, you know, like Rod Stewart and The Faces, where Rod became bigger than the band. I never wanted it to be that way. The Who was my band, and that was always going to be the main priority of mine.

Q: in 1993 when I was covering the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions, the drummer from The Doors, John Densmore, said to Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger: “Do you remember when we were playing at the Fillmore, and Jim (Morrison) thought he was Roger Daltrey and swung the microphone cord around and hit Bill Graham in the head?”

A: Ha ha ha ha ha!

Q: Did you ever have a mishap with the microphone when you were swinging it around on stage?

A: I usually hit myself! I’ve only ever hit one person deliberately with the microphone. Every time there’s been some mishap, the microphone has always swung back and hit me, either in the kneecap — which is very painful — or, even worse, in the crotch. I twirled it because The Who was such a manic band, with Moon and Townshend, that it enlivened my side of the stage.

Q: I’ve got to ask: Who was it you deliberately hit?

A: I don’t know who it was. All I know is that they’re sorry that they threw something that nearly took my eye out on stage. I happened to see them do it. They were trapped in the crowd. And I was quite a good shot with that microphone ...

Q: Unlike Keith Moon, you never drove a car into a hotel swimming pool or threw TVs out hotel windows. Were you ever tempted to?

A: I thought then — and still think now — it was very much puerile behavior. You know, I was born during an air raid in World War II. I was older than the other members of The Who and came from a different area of London, which was much, much poorer — I can still remember food rationing if you can believe that. At the age of 15, I was kicked out of school and I went to work as a sheet metal worker.

To make it in the band, I was working eight hours a day doing sheet metal work, then coming home, swapping my clothes for something a bit cleaner, and going out working in the band at night. So, it’s always been (dismaying) for me to see something so puerile and distracting as (hotel room destruction). I found it quite stupid, to be honest.

Q: What is the status of the oft-delayed Keith Moon biopic, and who would you like to play you in the film?

A: It’s very much in the works. We are, at this moment, looking for directors. We’ll cast it after we have the right director.

Q: You were a very young man when The Who recorded “My Generation,” with its famous “hope I die before get old” lyric. Do you put yourself in a young man’s frame of mind when you sing it now?

A: I sing it as a singer delivering it. I talk in the song, and I say: “Now, you talk about your generation, I’ll talk about my generation.” I don’t pretend to be young. I sing the song.

Q: A big disappointment about The Who is how infrequently the band has made albums since the 1970s.

A: Well, you can’t go back. It’s always been a little bit of a weight on my shoulders that (Pete and I) have never managed to go into the studio and bang things around between us. I’ve written songs and laid them down — I’m not a slouch — and who knows what could come of them if we could collaborate?

Q: What would it take to make that happen?

A: (laughing) An earthquake!

KT Tunstall is musician in residence at Kodiak Refuge

woman with a guitar stands on a lake shore looking out across the lake

Sitting at a cabin window with her guitar and journal, singer-songwriter KT Tunstall watched as a large, blonde-colored bear with three nearly grown cubs swam across the lake toward her. They silently climbed out of the water, shook off on the shore beneath the cabin, and walked off down the rocky beach in search of spawning sockeye salmon. Tunstall excitedly informed nearby refuge staff of the visitors by radio and stepped quietly out on the deck to capture the scene in a video.

Then, it was back to writing in solitude - with a view of the lake and mountains at the heart of Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

A musical residency experience with Kodiak and KT Tunstall

Refuge manager Mike Brady and the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge staff welcomed the 5X Platinum and Grammy nominated musician during the fall of 2022 for a one-week artist residency to spark new music and stories. Tunstall has teamed up with nonprofit Sustain Music and Nature and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge to create an original song inspired by the residency. Her song and the accompanying music video, shot at Karluk Lake on the refuge by outdoor adventure videographer Chris Shane, will premiere globally in 2023.

Refuge staff hosted Tunstall in coordination with regional Alaska Native Corporation, Koniag, Inc., at Camp Island on Karluk Lake for three days. At more than 11 miles long, Karluk Lake is Kodiak Island’s largest lake and is home to abundant salmon runs, legendary Kodiak brown bears, and rich cultural history. The lake can only be reached by a 45-minut floatplane flight over the refuge from the city of Kodiak. The refuge shares stewardship of the lands around Karluk Lake and of Camp Island with Koniag , an important partner and landowner that represents more than 4,400 Alutiiq shareholders.

Musician KT Tunstall watched bears from across a stream

Time at Camp Island was the centerpiece of the retreat, a remote opportunity to create personal connections with wildlife, people, and place. The Community Affairs Liaison for the refuge and Koniag, Amy Peterson, facilitated an island-inspired menu and occasional activities at Koniag’s Kodiak Brown Bear Center, also located at Camp Island.

At Karluk Lake, KT was immersed in nature and surrounded by wildlife. She fished for Dolly Varden char, kayaked, snorkeled with spawning sockeye salmon, and encountered more than a dozen Kodiak brown bears, including a subadult that appeared curious and seemed to spend a few moments listening in as she played guitar outdoors in a cottonwood tree.

Tunstall also spent time in the community of Kodiak. She met with Alutiiq Museum staff to tour the museum and view archaeological artifacts from the Karluk area, learned about bear ecology and behavior with the Kodiak Refuge bear biologist, toured the refuge research vessel Ursa Major II, and practiced salmon skin sewing and beadwork with Alutiiq artist Kayla McDermott. She visited Main Elementary School as the last activity of her residency, where she spoke with students about music and taught them her award-winning song, Suddenly I See. The class then joined her in singing the Kodiak Refuge Salmon Song about the salmon lifecycle, a favorite at the refuge’s annual summer Salmon Camp.

The refuge is grateful to the Kodiak community and partners who made this residency a tremendous success, and to KT Tunstall and Sustain Music and Nature for this incredible opportunity to share the refuge and Kodiak with new audiences. Stay tuned for the final music and video, to premiere in 2023!

More about Songscapes:

Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is the eighth Songscape produced by Sustain Music and Nature , following recent productions with Beebe at Colorado and Utah’s Green River, Ben Sollee at New Jersey’s Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, and Conner Youngblood at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Salt Lake City. It is the organization’s first musical residency in Alaska.

Sustain’s Songscapes are retreats that create partnerships between land agencies and musicians. Through the hospitality of host environmental organizations, artists are immersed in the beauty and history of our public land heritage. Musicians use this retreat time to create a song inspired by the land and their experiences, and then the song is shared with fans to inspire and encourage others to value public lands and build critical awareness and support for continued conservation and stewardship of wildlife and landscapes.

Sustain Music and Nature is a U.S. nonprofit that makes music a force for nature. Co-founders Betsy Mortenson and Harrison Goodale accompanied KT Tunstall and Chris Shane during the retreat and will next work on the production, release, and promotion of the music video with Green Hill Music and Primary Wave Music.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
