'See ya next time': How a neighborhood grocery store grew into today's Kwik Trip phenomenon

What's so special about kwik trip, and why do so many people love this midwestern gas station and convenience store.

Design by Brooke Eberle, producer, Wisconsin Digital Optimization Team

There’s nothing more Wisconsin than a Kwik Trip.

That is, until you take a look at the fan base and following that turned a convenience store into a phenomenon.

Fifty-seven years after the first Kwik Trip opened in Eau Claire, Kwik Trip has grown from that one neighborhood grocery store to a statewide obsession with its own personality across social media platforms.

The company has  Facebook , Twitter , Instagram , TikTok , YouTube and Snapchat  accounts. It even has a Spotify  account with more than 130 followers who can listen to the company’s "Kwik Trip Checkout" or "Chicken Jammies" public playlists.

There are multiple fan groups on Facebook, including Wisconsin Kwik Trip Enthusiast Club, Kwik Trip Enthusiasts Club, and even a Kwik Trip Missed Connections group. Some fans have had photo shoots, even on their wedding days, at a Kwik Trip. It has become more than a store; it's a vibe.

The Wisconsin Kwik Trip Enthusiast Club, for example, was created two years ago and is not affiliated with the company. It has more than 94,000 members and dozens of posts daily, ranging from photos of favorite Kwik Trip treats, questions, memes and more.

So, how did Kwik Trip grow into a Midwestern phenomenon with a social media influencer status?

Keeping up with the Kwik Trips

Keeping up with the Kwik Trips

Kendra Lasack, Kwik Trip’s digital content supervisor, said social media platforms have allowed the Kwik Trip team to bring the brand to life.

“It’s incredible how much we’re able to learn from our fans every day, just by engaging and listening to the conversations on social,” she said.

Lasack said the company has shifted its digital marketing strategy from focusing on the products to focusing on the people and developing a brand voice to bring a more human level to the company’s content.

She said the company's success on social media reflects Kwik Trip’s mission to treat others as they would like to be treated. The team listens, takes time to reply and has fun with its followers.

And people have responded. Members of the social media fan groups talk about the company, highlight their favorite products, post original memes and share Kwik Trip’s content.

When USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin asked members of the Wisconsin Kwik Trip Enthusiast Club Facebook group what they like most about Kwik Trip, more than 400 people responded, including dozens of employees who are part of the group.

Their answers ranged from clean bathrooms to the food options and how friendly the employees are. Many like the "see ya next time" farewell as they leave a store. Fans from other states said they stock up on Kwik Trip goodies while they're in the area, as they can't find anything like it anywhere else.

Carrie Marie is from Yorkville, Illinois and travels to Friendship often. When she and her family are in Wisconsin, her two teenage boys have to stop at Kwik Trip twice a day, every day. She said her family has Kwik Trip hoodies and three Big Buddy cups in case they cross the border unexpectedly. Her children receive Kwik Trip gas cards from their grandparents.

They make you feel like a person in there and not just another customer.

Jaimee Arnold from Appleton said she loves Kwik Trip because of the company's high standards for cleanliness, someone is always willing to help, and guests can find a wide variety of "grab and go" options for whatever they're craving.

"They make you feel like a person in there and not just another customer," she said.

Emily Jean Weger from Watertown said she's been going to a Kwik Trip store since she was little, and now she takes her kids to the same store.

"There are employees who've been there the whole time and say 'I remember your mom when she was your age and smaller,'" she said. "That makes Kwik Trip a special place to me."

Fans also love the company's social media presence.

"Their social media person is phenomenal," said Kwik Trip fan Leah McDonald from Waukesha. "Really connects with the consumers."

Recently, when Kwik Trip ran out of coffee cups, the brand took to social media, saying another gas station took the cups . The problem was later explained as a supply chain issue . In lieu of disposable cups, Kwik Trip encouraged guests to bring their own cups for a 99-cent refill of any size, suggesting dozens of options ranging from a wheelbarrow, blender and fish bowl to a toilet plunger, Dumbledore's hat and a gas can.

The post was shared more than 17,000 times and collected more than 18,000 reactions and 3,700 comments.

"Great way to make lemonade from lemons," Christine Garchow from Portage commented on the post. "Thanks Kwik Trip!"

Wilson the volleyball and Forrest Gump's chocolate box both made the list, prompting a comment from Jimmie Kaska from Cadott:

"Did Tom Hanks steal the cups? Is that why we're using his volleyball and chocolate box to load up on coffee?"

Kwik Trip responded with a Tom Hanks gif.

Three days later, Kwik Trip posted a follow-up post to clarify some additional details.

"We didn't expect a post about cups to go viral," the post was captioned .

One of the frequently-asked questions was how long the refill deal would last.

"(I don't know) I just do social media," the answer stated. "At least a few weeks ... our cup guy is doing his best."

As to whether people could really bring in a wheelbarrow, the answer is no.

A customer fills his cup with cappuccino oat the Kwik Trip store in Plover.

"Please no," said the follow-up, posted the day after the Super Bowl. "We know the initial post was a bit ridiculous, but it was cheaper than a commercial spot during the football game last night. Feel free to get creative with your mug, just make sure it's clean and safe for hot liquid. Also, let's not waste ... if you pour, you better drink."

Paige Forde, Kwik Trip’s social media specialist, said interacting with followers is extremely important to Kwik Trip.

“We love making our fans know they’re being heard, whether that means sharing their content, interacting with them, or passing these social listening trends forward to the appropriate department,” she said.

Some fans have captured their love of Kwik Trip on their wedding day, holding photo shoots both outside and inside of a store.

“We absolutely love seeing this content,” Forde said. “It’s incredible that so many of our loyal guests take the time to make a special ‘photo op’ trip to our stores during such a special day.”

Other interactions have included fans sending unusual direct messages to Kwik Trip’s social media accounts, and sometimes those fans screenshot the messages and share them.

Forde said those interactions provide opportunities for content, and they’re great ways to engage fans.

“The majority of the time, we go along with it,” Forde said. “I mean, it isn’t too often you can (direct message) a brand something obscure and they take the time to respond. It’s fun, it’s personal, and definitely gets people talking.”

It all started with one store

It all started with one store

Kwik Trip started as a neighborhood grocery store, opening its first location in 1965 in Eau Claire. The second store opened in La Crosse in 1971.

“It was a humble beginning with painted letters cut out of plywood,” Kwik Trip owner Don Zietlow said. “These were all neighborhood grocery stores, and none of them sold fuel.”

Smith & Co. Candles is partnering with Kwik Trip to sell Glazer-scented candles online.

The company opened a corporate office in La Crosse in 1973, and, by 1986, it had grown to 100 stores. Kwik Trip opened its 800th store in December and, according to the Wisconsin Technology Council, has nearly $7 billion in annual sales.

The success Kwik Trip found over the years has not been by accident. Zietlow, who is still the company's president and CEO, points to two main ingredients that contributed to Kwik Trip’s success: the right people and the ability to have products that guests want and are looking for and being able to offer them at a good deal.

Zietlow said Kwik Trip is able to offer quality products at good prices because of the company’s “vertical integration.” The company’s Glazer doughnuts, for example, are made in Kwik Trip’s own bakery, they’re shipped on Kwik Trip’s trucks, and they’re sold in Kwik Trip stores.

Be our guest

Be our guest

Zietlow said Kwik Trip’s employees set the company apart from the competition.

“People are our number one asset," he said. "There’s more to a job than pay. You need to feel like you are making a difference. That’s our mission, and that’s what our coworkers do every day.”

There’s more to a job than pay. You need to feel like you are making a difference. That’s our mission, and that’s what our coworkers do every day.

In the middle of a pandemic and worker shortages, many companies have had a hard time finding and retaining employees, but Kwik Trip hasn’t felt those hardships as much as some other businesses. Zietlow said the company and family is committed to their coworkers, and Kwik Trip shares 40% of its pre-tax profits.

And employees have felt that sentiment, saying they feel valued and respected at their jobs.

Kwik Trip employee Keith DeLabio from Kenosha said in the Wisconsin Kwik Trip Enthusiast Club Facebook group that he appreciates the 40% profit share, and that Zietlow calls his employees his coworkers and wears a Kwik Trip uniform every day instead of a suit and tie.

Denise Royea from Oconomowoc said the company treats all of its coworkers as family, and they're open with them about all of the ins and outs of the company, from where new stores will open to the the company's faults and areas for improvement. She said between informative meetings and employee programs, no one gets left behind.

The company operates under the core values of honesty and integrity, respect, excellence, humility, innovation and work ethic.

“Our coworkers earn every penny,” Zietlow said. “We can’t thank them enough for the hard work they do, day in and day out.”

Michael James Luckow from Manitowoc said when he was first hired at Kwik Trip, the company told him people aren't customers, they're guests. While it was a strange concept at first, he quickly understood the distinction.

"They are guests in our store, and we take pride in them having a great experience, just as anyone would having guests over the holidays," he said.

Customer Coryn Burette from New London said Kwik Trip always has the nicest employees, even the ones working overnight shifts.

"They go above and beyond to make my visit nice and wonderful," she said.

Hunter Karraker from Shawano said a Kwik Trip employee knew she was pregnant before she did, after she had gone in for shakes every night for a week. Karraker said she told the employee she had been craving them, and the employee asked if she was pregnant.

"I got a test and sure enough, it came back positive," she said.

Mary Knuth stocks fresh breakfast sandwiches and burritos at the Kwik Trip store in Plover.

She said the workers began to recognize her, and when they would see her come in, they'd make sure there was fresh food out for her on the hot spot, a display where customers can find breakfast sandwiches, pizza slices and other warm food options that are ready to eat. Now that Karraker has had her baby, she said an employee asked her how they were doing.

"They definitely make me feel special," she said. "Kwik Trip is the best."

Some people love Kwik Trip so much, it becomes a birthday theme. Mitzie Murdock Klozotsky told USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin she owns a custom baking business in Kaukauna, and a customer recently ordered a  Kwik Trip cake for a 40th birthday .

"Needless to say, Kwik Trip has a following unlike anything else when a milestone like a 40th birthday is celebrated with a Kwik Trip themed cake," she said.

Midwest is best

Midwest is best

One of the most relatable parts of Kwik Trip is its roots in the Midwest.

“The majority of our content is based around what people think about our brand and relatable Midwest situations,” Forde said.

So, when there's a chance to merge some Midwest personalities, Kwik Trip is on it. The list of projects the Kwik Trip team works on is never-ending, and there are always new challenges that the team brainstorms in meetings.

Some of those projects have included partnerships through a brand ambassador program Kwik Trip started in 2019. Kwik Trip has worked with a few Midwest social media personalities like comedian Charlie Berens and Green Bay Packers players Rashan Gary and Kurt Benkert.

You can find the Berens Alexander at Kwik Trip for a limited time.

In 2020, Kwik Trip's team started brainstorming ideas to promote the company's Fresh Blends menu of smoothies, frozen lemonades, refreshers, iced coffees, cold brew coffee and shakes. In November, the company partnered with Berens and premiered a Berens Alexander on a "secret menu." It's a combination of caramel, chocolate, cream and cold brew.

“We’ve had the opportunity to work with truly amazing, authentic and talented people through this initiative and look forward to growing this network to reach even more unique audiences,” Forde said.

Kwik Trip is an influencer offline, too

Kwik Trip is an influencer offline, too

The company is also committed to helping the communities it calls home. Kwik Trip donates to various community organizations and efforts, and it sponsors youth sports teams, large events and more. It also helps groups with fundraising options like car washes and scrip gift cards and more. It even encourages grade school students to read more with Kwik Book, a program that offers a free slice of pizza or a garden salad for each student who reaches a reading goal set by their teacher.

Many fans on Facebook said their favorite thing about the company was the donations and efforts to help people in need.

Chelsea Hall from Janesville said when she lost everything in a house fire two years ago, someone submitted her name for a donation program through Kwik Trip in Milton. She said it wasn't a lot, but every little bit made a huge difference.

"They support Special Olympics and are at almost every state tournament handing out water, Gatorade, fruit and cookies," said Sue Weber Dushek from Milwaukee. "The interaction between the employees and the athletes is an amazing thing to watch."

Gail Marie Benedict from Loyal said Kwik Trip came to her small town when the community had lost its grocery store, and Kwik Trip filled that gap, helped the community and brought jobs to the area.

Kwik Trip has filled community needs, too, especially in smaller areas with less access to grocery stores and other food options. Many fans said their Kwik Trip serves as their grocery store. Some said Kwik Trip opened in their area and filled a need when a grocery store had closed.

Kay Grosinske, who now lives in Texas, said while she misses Kwik Trip, she regularly visits the store when she's back home visiting family. She said her hometown got two new stores recently, and the company has donated a lot of food to the local community help center.

"Those donations alone spread a lot of love," she said.

Where do Kwik Trips come from?

Where do Kwik Trips come from?

Have you ever wondered how a Kwik Trip is born?

Dax Connely, Kwik Trip's real estate manager, said the company's real estate team chooses new locations based on an area’s population, traffic volume near a site and its accessibility, and more. The company is always looking to open in new markets throughout Wisconsin, he said.

Kwik Trip tore down the Menzer Glass building in Sheboygan in 2021 to make room for a $3 million expansion of its Calumet Drive location.

The look of a Kwik Trip varies. Some are built from the ground up. Others have evolved from other stores. Connely said Kwik Trip has many stores that the company acquired over the years that don’t look like the typical Kwik Trip, but the company’s goal is to have its sites look similar. Locations may have their own uniqueness because of the landscape or land size, however, he said.

The newest Kwik Trip stores look a bit different than the long-standing sites. Connely said the  “Generation 3” stores have a new color schemes are larger at 9,000 square feet, and have more of a small grocery feel.

Kwik Trip has plans to grow, both inside and outside of Wisconsin. Connely said the company has plans to extend into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and also into the eastern edges of North and South Dakota in a couple of years.

When it comes to expansion plans, Kwik Trip fans approve.

"I just think Kwik Trip is the finest chain of gas stations in the entire United States of America," said customer Andrea Tamara from Sheboygan.

New version is harder to use

Love the app and use it weekly. Deals are great, coupons are not bad and finding stores is easy. My only problem is it is now harder to order food and now there is no favored stores on the home page. Why change it when it worked so well?? Ordering food takes longer and I have had freezes but it’s no deal breaker. I don’t use it that much to begin with, only when I am on a time crunch. My main beef is with your 3 favored stores not on the start up/home screen. You can still save them, but you have to search for all stores in order to see them and what the gas prices are. Why even offer favored stores if you are going to have to search all stores to see them anyway?? Just makes no sense at all. I wish I could have the previous version back... Update: they have received my review and sent feedback as well. Said they were taking it into future considerations since I wasn’t the only one not pleased with the favorites being omitted on the home screen. 2 new updates later.... still no change. No change on their part, no rating change on my part. Only thing holding it back... Final update: they have FINALLY put favorites on the home screen. It’s took long enough. Now it’s back to being a useful app again.

Developer Response ,

Hi! We will pass along your concerns about the favorites on the home page going away. Thank you for providing us feedback! Have a great night.

I LOVE this app but there are a few things they could make better

I love the convince of this app as I’m the person who is always running late and this totally saves me so much time if I need to grab something really quick on a time crunch! The feature that they can bring it out to your car is a lifesaver when you have kids in the car and I love all the money saving deals and freebies, especially the fun freebies they give during the holidays just for ordering! I wish they would add a notes/ special request feature when ordering food! I’m now pregnant and wanted to order a sandwich and grab it really quick on my 15 minute break but I wanted to be able to tell them to heat the meat up as well for safe pregnancy consumption as well as to add a sauce to dip it in on the side! Or maybe that be an option on the ordering details. Also there aren’t any of the sugar free monster options available to order ahead which is a total bummer! Just some things I hope you’ll be able to add to the app later on! 😁

Opening an account fail

I’ve tried everything to open an account with no luck. I get to the account verification and it throws out an error Qt3000i. I went in through FB and it tells me, unable to complete. Please help, I’d really like to give the app a chance and change my review.. I apologize I wasn’t able to call you back. I wanted to let you know that the app didn’t like my primary email account. I was able to open an account with my secondary email. I will improve my star review because I believe this is a fantastic app, lots of options... however I think if you’re going to make it possible to purchase store items like a loaf of bread there should be more than 6 items. I’m seeing that as maybe something you are working on? I would like to add there is no option for ordering your fantastic fresh brewed Iced tea (my absolute favorite thing to drink) if I have my young kids with me while I gas, there is no way I’m going inside to grab a tea or sandwich. I would love to see the entire store in the app along with your huge candy and snack options! I would definitely buy more if I’m not standing in there telling my kids to hurry up and pick! Thank you for listening!
Please give us a call @ 800.247.3452 option 6. We would like to help.

Kwik trip gears up for 2024 grand openings, east college store seeks valentine’s day opening.

kwik trip in store specials

Photo by Deb Gau Construction continued Thursday at the Kwik Trip location on East College Drive.

MARSHALL — Within a year Marshall’s two new Kwik Trip locations should be open and ready for hundreds of customers.

Construction crews are nearing completion on the East College Drive Kwik Trip site. Marshall Economic Development Authority Director Lauren Deutz said Kwik Trip aims to complete interior work this winter and that it wants to open in February.

“They’re aiming for a Valentine’s Day grand opening,” Deutz said. “It’s coming along really well. People have driven by on East College Drive and are interested in their progress.”

Kwik Trip purchased the two Cattoor Oil stations on East College Drive and West Main Street earlier this year. The West Main Street site won’t be developed until 2024. The process will include the removal of four houses either through moves or demolitions. A grand opening is expected in November.

“Things had to move slower on West Main because of the houses,” Deutz said. “It takes time for the transactions and title work. By next year at this time both sites should be operating.”

Cattoor Oil has been a Marshall fixture for many years. It once comprised three stations, including one near Southwest Minnesota State University on property that’s currently Borch’s Sporting Goods.

The East College Drive and Bruce Street station was established as a Super America in the 1980s. It was most recently a Speedway station. It was the site of Marshall’s Domino’s Pizza, which moved to a new building at East College Drive and Jewett Street.

Prior to Super America, the corner was home to the Lloyd’s Fairway grocery store operated by Lloyd Mikel. Lloyd’s was one of Marshall neighborhood grocery stores in the 1960s. Others included Super Valu on West College Drive currently Western Printing and Red Owl on West Main Street currently the Marshall Independent.

The West Main Street site was home to Toni’s Depot since the early 1990s. The property was previously a cafe, but underwent extensive remodeling to make way for Toni’s Depot.

The restaurant was started by longstanding Marshall restaurant owner Frank Schultz, who operated Toni’s Pizza and Toni’s Ice Cream Parlor on East College Drive in the 1970s and 1980s.

Toni’s Depot moved this year to the Mike’s Cafe location on East College Drive. It was built as a Happy Chef restaurant in the 1970s when Marshall expanded toward Southwest Minnesota State University.

It was home to Mike’s for almost 20 years, starting shortly after a fire destroyed the original Mike’s Cafe building in downtown Marshall in 2002. The building had been the original site of Marshall’s Lyon County Co-Op. It was the location of Mike’s Cafe since 1936.

After the fire, the downtown corner was redeveloped into modern commercial property. It includes the Anytime Fitness fitness center.

One Harley, 11 days, 503 stores: Wisconsin woman completes epic Kwik Trip Kwest

kwik trip in store specials

STURGEON BAY – In the well-established chronicles of Wisconsinites' fanatic love for Kwik Trip , one woman set a new (hot) bar Wednesday morning when she parked her Harley-Davidson at the pump at the Egg Harbor Road location in Sturgeon Bay.

With a 13-cent fill-up complete and receipt secured, Whit Meza completed an epic "Kwest" to visit all 503 Kwik Trip stores in Wisconsin, plus as many others as she could in neighboring states — a 4,500-mile journey completed in just 11 days.

"It's you!" a customer enthused as he spotted Meza. He recognized her from coverage of her ride and asked for a selfie with her. The Sturgeon Bay store staff welcomed her inside with a round of applause.

A self-professed Kwik Trip super fan, Meza said her 2022 summary of Kwik Trip activity got her thinking about how she could level up in 2023. She found an answer in her other passion in life: endurance motorcycling, long-distance rides generally involving riding at least 1,000 miles in 24 hours.

"With me being a long-distance motorcycle rider, I kind of united the two," Meza said. "This was the perfect, perfect opportunity to do something like this because no one has ever done that before."

Meza set out from her hometown of Ripon, about 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee, on May 7. She spent an average of 15.5 hours each day on her Harley-Davidson Pan America Special. It rained most of one day and was particularly cold in Superior, but Meza said those moments were offset by days spent driving through the Wisconsin countryside as spring bloomed.

Let's ride through some highlights of Meza's journey.

Meza's Kwik Trip Kwest by the numbers

Meza originally planned to visit all 852 Kwik Trip and Kwik Star stores, but adapted her plan as it became clear 77 stores per day would not be feasible. She instead focused on every Wisconsin store but did venture into the three other states where Kwik Trip operates.

She set rules for her Kwest in line with those required to get an endurance ride certified by the Iron Butt Association, an 82,000 member group dedicated to safe, endurance motorcycle riding. She tracked her progress on an app, collected receipts to track her fuel and food purchases, took video and photos to document her progress and, since this is a Kwik Trip challenge, she bought all her meals and snacks at stores along the way.

Here's various stats and data Meza tracked during her journey to put the feat into perspective:

  • 4,557 miles traveled
  • 546 Kwik Trips/Kwik Stars visited
  • More than $500 of gasoline
  • 154 hours riding, an average of 15.5 hours per day
  • Estimated 2.75 hours spent each day in or at Kwik Trip stores
  • Four states visited: Wisconsin (503 stores), Iowa (40 stores), Michigan (2 stores) and Illinois (1 store)

She ate her favorite hot bar item every day, had a "guilty pleasure" purchase, but saved the Glazers for the finish line

Meza ate 33 straight meals at Kwik Trip and as a brand fanatic and bona fide Kwik Trip Ambassador since 2019, you know she has a favorite item.

"The breakfast sandwich, the egg, cheese and sausage croissant is my go-to," she said, noting she ate one for breakfast every morning of the 11-day trek.

Beyond that, she focused on high-protein, high-energy foods: Eggs, protein shakes and snacks that would give her a boost of energy for the 15-plus hours of riding each day. When she would arrive at a store but didn't need gasoline or food, she'd pick up her "guilty pleasure" item: M&Ms.

She said endurance riding doesn't leave much room for popular bakery treats like Glazers.

"The donuts will be for celebrating today," Meza said. "I saved that for the last celebration, to get that sugar high."

Amid visits to 546 Kwik Trips, 2 stores stood out

Meza said visiting roughly 50 stores a day meant some of them blended together, but she said two stores stood out among the green roofs and red-striped awnings.

The store at 611 Gateway Ave., in Mauston, was huge, she said, with fuel stations and weight scales for semi-trucks, large semi parking lots and the consumer-focused store.

"It's just big. It's a larger spot than I realized," Meza said. "It felt like one of the largest ones."

The other one stood out for its unique decoration: Bessie , a cow decorated in Kwik Trip branding that's located in front of the store in Thorp.

"It was just a cute little rendition of Wisconsin that I found unique," she said.

She did it for the destinations, but came to love the journey across Wisconsin

Meza took vacation from her job as a social media specialist for Destination Door County for the trip. She posted updates to her Instagram page and plans to upload video from the trip to her YouTube channel .

And while her trek reinforced her love for Kwik Trip, Meza said she also developed a deeper appreciation of the natural beauty to be found throughout Wisconsin.

"You can drive in a car, but you're kind of closed off from being able to smell the fresh blooms or people that are making a fire across the street," Meza said. "There are so many senses you don't get to experience without riding a motorcycle. I got to see a lot and experience a lot in Wisconsin."

Where to get solar eclipse glasses last minute

It may not be too late to get last minute solar eclipse glasses for today, depending on your location.

Students from Muchin College Prep react as the solar eclipse emerges from behind clouds in Millennium Park in Chicago on Aug. 21, 2017

Today (April 8), the moon will completely block the sun's disk, plunging parts of 15 U.S. states along the eclipse's path of totality into eerie darkness during the daytime. Meanwhile, viewers across the entire contiguous U.S. will be able to see a partial solar eclipse .

To view the partial phases of the eclipse, no matter where you are, you need to use protective eyewear such as solar eclipse glasses. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you still need a pair of certified solar eclipse glasses before the climax of the total solar eclipse in North America today, you may not be out of luck yet.

Where can I buy solar eclipse glasses in person today?

There are many local businesses that may still have solar glasses in stock today.

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) — the agency responsible for certifying that solar eclipse glasses meet safety regulations — has a list of stores that sell certified eclipse glasses. Try calling a store near you to see if any glasses are in stock. Participating stores include:

  • Walmart: Solar eclipse glasses, binoculars and apparel
  • Lowe's: Solar eclipse glasses in-store
  • Target:  Discounted ISO-certified solar glasses
  • Walmart:  Solar glasses, binoculars and filters available
  • Staples:  Solar eclipse multipack available
  • Best Buy:  Solar glasses, viewers, telescopes and binoculars
  • B&H Photo Video:  Binoculars, glasses and telescopes
  • Adorama:  Solar glasses, filters, binoculars and cameras
  • Meijer: Solar eclipse glasses and smartphone filters

To help avoid counterfeit glasses and scams today, make sure your eclipse glasses include an ISO logo on them to show they meet the international safety standard ISO 12312-2 . Check your glasses for any scrapes or rips on the lenses, and try them out using a bright lamp at home before using them to look directly at the sun. You should only be able to see the dimmest speck of light from your lightbulb.

While it's likely too late to order a pair online, many brick-and-mortar businesses may still have eclipse glasses in stock today. In addition, hundreds of libraries and universities across the country have been doling out free pairs of glasses for the last several weeks and may still be able to hook you up.

April 8 solar eclipse: What time does totality start in every state?

Here's everything you need to know about finding certified solar eclipse glasses before the big event this afternoon.

Where can I get free solar eclipse glasses near me?

If snagging a pair of free solar eclipse glasses is your goal, you may be out of luck this time.

Many libraries, universities and certain businesses have been offering free pairs of eclipse glasses for several months now; whether or not they still have any supplies in stock will depend entirely on your location and how close to the path of totality you are.

Try calling your local library branch or university right away to see if they still have any glasses in stock. Check out this map of participating libraries for more info.

Meanwhile, Warby Parker has been offering free eclipse glasses in stores since April 1.

If you are attending a solar eclipse viewing party today, they may have free pairs of glasses in stock. Check your local listings for viewing events near you.

Do I need solar eclipse glasses?

Totality — the moment when the sun is completely blocked by the moon — is the ONLY safe time to view the eclipse with the naked eye. To do so, you MUST be within the path of totality. (These 2024 eclipse maps will tell you if you are.)

— Solar eclipse 2024: 8 things to watch for during totality

— 10 weird things that happen during a solar eclipse

To view the partial phases of today's solar eclipse, which last about 1 hour and 20 minutes before and after totality, you MUST wear protective eyewear — whether you are in the path of totality or not.

You don't necessarily need solar eclipse glasses to enjoy the partial eclipse. If you can't find a pair, you can try indirectly viewing the eclipse by looking at shadows projected on the floor or wall by a pasta strainer or colander; making a homemade eclipse viewer ; or watching a free live stream . Here are seven safe ways to view the partial phases of the eclipse today.

Last-Minute Solar Eclipse Glasses: Here's How to Find a Pair

Warby Parker says its stores are out of stock of free ones, but you still have other options. Also, make sure you test your glasses.

Warby Parker eclipse glasses

It's essential to wear a proper pair of eclipse glasses, or a  box pinhole projector  for indirect viewing , if you'll be viewing the skies during the solar eclipse today . Except for the brief period of total darkness or totality, looking at any portion of the sun or partial eclipse can cause damage to your eyes .

Warby Parker , the popular prescription glasses shop, was making it a little easier by offering free solar eclipse glasses at its stores. However, the company is now out of stock, according to an automated message on Warby Parker's customer service line, and information from a company representative provided to CNET Sunday evening. (If you don't want to take my word for it, you can try calling your local Warby Parker store using this store-locator map .)

We're down to the wire. But if you're searching last- last minute, below are a couple more ways to snag a pair of glasses that come from the American Astronomical Society's  preapproved list of sellers  that make legitimate (i.e. safe) eclipse glasses.

If you bought your glasses from a store or source outside the list of safe sellers, it's an extra-good idea to test your glasses before the eclipse  to make sure they're the real deal, especially amid recent  reports of recalls of eclipse glasses, including some stores in Missouri.

Where else to look for free glasses (or buy some last minute)

A good option for finding free solar eclipse glasses is to visit your local library to see if it's offering any. The AAS has a map of  libraries offering certified glasses . Or, you can give your library a call.

If you're out of free options, there are some chain stores, restaurants and convenience stores selling certified solar eclipse glasses, according to the AAS, although whether they carry them will depend on the individual location.

The following stores sell certified glasses in-shop, as identified by the AAS :

  • Walmart
  • Cracker Barrel
  • Bucc-ee's
  • Meijer
  • Menards

If you get to your local Warby Parker store and it's already run out of eclipse glasses, the company says it also has  pinhole projectors  on hand. (You can also  make your own   pinhole projector .)

Wherever you get your glasses, especially if you buy them from a source that hasn't been vetted specifically by the AAS, it's a good idea to give them a test run before the big event. To help you figure it out, the  American Academy of Ophthalmology says that while looking through them, no light of "ordinary brightness" should be visible through your eclipse glasses or solar viewer; only the sun or sunlight that's reflected somewhere.

For more on solar eclipse eye safety and where to find glasses ahead of time, here's what an optometrist would like you to know . Also, here's more information about the path of totality and how to watch the solar eclipse .
