Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

  • Count Dracula and company participate in a cruise for sea-loving monsters, unaware that their boat is being commandeered by the monster-hating Van Helsing family.
  • Mavis surprises Dracula with a family voyage on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship so he can take a vacation from providing everyone else's vacation at the hotel. The rest of Drac's Pack cannot resist going along. But once they leave port, romance arises when Dracula meets the mysterious ship Captain, Ericka. Now it's Mavis' turn to play the overprotective parent.
  • The monster family embarks on a vacation on a luxury monster cruise ship so Drac can take a summer vacation from providing everyone else's vacation at the hotel. It's smooth sailing for Drac's Pack as the monsters indulge in all of the shipboard fun the cruise has to offer, from monster volleyball to exotic excursions, and catching up on their moon tans. But the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis realizes Drac has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka, who hides a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind. — Sony Pictures Entertainment
  • When the lonely Count Dracula goes on vacation with Mavis, his family and monster friends on the cruise ship Legacy, he immediately falls in love with the human Captain Ericka. However the mysterious woman has a secret that may jeopardize Dracula, his family and the other monsters. Who is Captain Ericka? — Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • It's been a tough year for the immortal bloodsucker, Count Dracula, after the events in Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015) , and Puppy!: A Hotel Transylvania Short (2017) , and now, the lonely and stressed-out grandfather needs a vacation. Under those circumstances, a luxurious cruise along with Mavis, Jonathan, Dennis, and the Carpathian resort's friendly monster-friends, may help the overworked hotelier blow off some steam, and, perhaps, find love in the person of the ocean liner's vivacious human captain, Ericka. However, are things always what they seem? Will Dracula get a second chance at love? — Nick Riganas
  • In 1897, Dracula ( Adam Sandler ) was taking a train ride with his friends, Frank ( Kevin James ), Griffin ( David Spade ), Murray ( Keegan-Michael Key ), and Wayne ( Steve Buscemi ), all of them disguised in women's dresses. Suddenly, Abraham Van Helsing ( Jim Gaffigan ) burst in and announced that there were monsters on the train. He held a match under Frank's nose, making him freak out. All the monsters ran and jumped onto the roof of the train, with Abraham in pursuit. Reaching the last car, Dracula pushed the rest of the monsters off to safety before Abraham cornered him. Dracula turned into a mouse just as the train entered a tunnel, and Abraham got smacked. With the train exiting the tunnel, Dracula turned into a bat and flew off, with Abraham giving chase in a biplane. Dracula kept dodging his attacks, always making him crash in painful ways. Finally, Dracula made Abraham fall into the ocean. In the present day, Dracula is hosting a monster wedding at the Hotel Transylvania. The groom is ready, but the bride is still in her room. Mavis ( Selena Gomez ) is with her, getting her over the jitters. She tells the bride that you only zing once in your life, and if she zinged when she first saw her fiancee, then she has nothing to worry about. Reassured, she goes down and joins the ceremony. After the wedding vows are done, Tinkles, a giant dog, burst into the room, being ridden by Dennis ( Asher Blinkoff ) and Winnie ( Sadie Sandler ). Dracula orders Tinkles to sit, and leads him out on a leash. Later, Johnny ( Andy Samberg ) is DJing the reception and everyone is dancing, except Dracula, since he has nobody to dance with. Suddenly, Frank's cousin grabs Dracula and starts dancing with him. He zaps the DJ table, causing a fast song to start playing, then hides behind Bigfoot's leg. Frank asks him if he liked her, and he says that he didn't zing with her. Alone in the attic, Dracula tries to use his phone to look for a date, but it keeps mishearing what he wants. Mavis walks past and hears him through the door as he uses the ZINGR app to look at pictures. Unable to swipe correctly with his long fingers, he accidentally connects with a witch when Mavis pokes her head in. He cuts off the call, and Mavis says he's been working too hard. She goes to her room and cuddles with Johnny and the kids, when a commercial comes on the TV, advertising a monster vacation. In a rickety old plane, Dracula, Mavis, Johnny, Frank and Eunice ( Fran Drescher ), Wayne and Wanda ( Molly Shannon ) and their pups, Griffin, Blobby ( Genndy Tartakovsky ) and Vlad ( Mel Brooks ) are all riding toward the Bermuda Triangle. Dennis and Winnie had secretly stowed Tinkles in the luggage compartment. The plane crash lands and everyone gets out and makes their way to an aircraft carrier. The crew leader, Stan the fish man ( Chris Parnell ) greets them, and the cruise sets off. Griffin, traveling with his invisible girlfriend, Crystal ( Chrissy Teigen ), sees Dracula looking unenthusiastic. The ship's captain, Ericka ( Kathryn Hahn ) greets everyone in multiple languages, and Dracula's face freezes. She walks up to him and tries to talk, but he can only speak gibberish. His friends try to snap him back, and he tells them that when he saw her, he zinged. Later that night, the monsters are dancing, swimming and doing other fun activities. Blobby, feeling seasick, changes colors and vomits, producing a Baby Blobby ( Genndy Tartakovsky ) who hugs him. Wayne and Wanda see a room labeled Kid's Club, and they happily drop off the pups for the day. In her stateroom, Ericka greets her great-grandfather, Abraham Van Helsing, who is now in a wheelchair. She tells him that he was right, monsters are disgusting, and she wanted to kill Dracula the first time she talked to him. He tells her to be patient, and doing research, he read about the ultimate device, one that destroyed the city of Atlantis. He tells her to lure them all to Atlantis, and he'll use the machine to kill them all. Still determined to kill Dracula, Ericka hides and takes many shots at him, but he always manages to just avoid her blows, not even realizing what's happening. Meeting his friends, he tells them that he always thought you could only zing once in your life, and he already had with his late wife, Martha. They all jump in the pool and start a game of volleyball when Ericka's voice comes on the speakers and tells them they've arrived at their first destination, the underwater volcano. They all grab scuba gear and jump into the volcano. Ericka fills a vessel with wooden stakes and chases after the group. Dracula hypnotizes a shark, and he and Dennis ride it around, with Ericka still secretly following. She tries to shoot wooden harpoons at him, but keeps just missing. Seeing the vessel, Dracula grabs the tail end and poses for a picture from Mavis. Panicked, Ericka launches herself out. Looking at the picture, Mavis sees what looks like human feet in the corner. Reaching the surface, Ericka sputters and gets back on the ship. Frank, Murray and Griffin are also on board getting snacks, when they hear Ericka muttering. Keeping themselves hidden, they hear her vow that she's going to get Dracula. Misunderstanding her, they think she's in love with him too. With everyone back on the ship, the guys run up to Dracula, and then see that Mavis is with him. Fearing her reaction to hearing about Ericka, they lead him away, and then tell him that Ericka likes him. Just then, Ericka walks up and listens in as they ask if he's going to ask her out. At first, she's disgusted, but then she realizes she has an opportunity. Pretending she just walked up, she greets him and says she'd love to go on a date. Arriving at the next destination, the deserted island, Dracula volunteers to take Dennis, so that Johnny and Mavis can enjoy themselves. At a restaurant, Mavis asks Johnny if he noticed Dracula's been acting weird, and he tells her that Dracula has a crush on the captain. Taken by surprise, Mavis says that she never imagined him with anyone except her mom, but she does want him to be happy. In the cantina, Ericka orders guacamole for Dracula, then secretly dumps garlic oil on it. She takes a chip, dunks it in the guacamole and feeds it to him. He swallows, and then his stomach starts to rumble. He asks if there was garlic in the food, and she lies and says she doesn't know. She asks if that's deadly for him, but he says that it only makes him gassy. He tells her he's nervous, since he hasn't been on a date since his wife died. He explains that he built the hotel so that he and Mavis could have a safe place to live. Touched by his obvious love for his daughter, she replies that she never knew her mother or father, and she was raised by her great-grandfather. Growing up on the ship, she tells him that it was always expected that she'd be captain one day. He says it's important to honor the past, but to make your own future. Thinking about that, she realizes that she doesn't want to be on the ship forever. Mavis and Johnny walk up to the table. Panicked, Ericka realizes she lost focus on her mission, and she quickly excuses herself. Mavis reminds Dracula that he was going to spend time with Dennis, and he hurries off to find him. Sitting down at the table, Mavis tells Johnny there's something she doesn't trust about Ericka. Johnny eats a chip with guacamole, then warns Mavis that it's loaded with garlic. Mavis realizes what Ericka is up to. Wayne and Wanda, still relieved to be pup-free, are running around the deck. Ericka hides from them, and is surprised to hear Abraham's voice coming from a vent. He tells her he knows she's been trying to kill Dracula, and that it could blow the whole plan. Making another lap, Wayne and Wanda run up to them, and Abraham quickly puts tranquilizer darts in their necks, and they fall to the ground, unconscious. Arriving at Atlantis, they all go into a casino. Eunice makes Frank promise not to gamble, since the last time he did, he lost an arm and a leg. Dracula asks the guys if they've seen Mavis, and he tells them that he's going to tell her about Ericka. Mavis and Johnny see Dracula on the floor, and she notices that he's following Ericka around. Suspicious, she tails after them, and Ericka goes into a hidden room. Arriving at a pool, she takes off her clothes, revealing a wet suit she was wearing underneath, and dives in. Dracula follows her, unseen, and she emerges at the ruins of a palace. At the end of a hallway is a strange glowing device, and she makes her way to it. She steps on a stone and sets off a booby trap, sending an ax flying toward her head. Dracula quickly grabs the ax and tosses it aside. She realizes that he's been following her, and he saved her life without thinking. She starts to think that everything she was told about monsters was wrong. He asks her what she's doing, and she lies and says that the device is an old family heirloom, and she wants to get it back. Taking another step, she sets off a second booby trap, and Dracula grabs another ax out of the air. Testing him, she skips forward, setting off all the traps, with him saving her every time. He ends up with axes, darts and arrows embedded all over his body. She grabs the device, causing the room to shake and crumble, and he flies her out just before she gets crushed. Mavis catches up to them, and sees Dracula looking like a pincushion from the traps. Her eyes turn angry, and she levitates Ericka up. Dracula tells her to stop, then says that when he first saw her, he zinged. Stunned, Mavis drops Ericka, and she asks what a zing is. Dracula explains that it's a love at first sight for monsters. Feeling guilty, Ericka tells him that she can never be with a monster, and she runs off. Mavis hugs Dracula, and he sulks away. Back on the ship, Murray shows off the tattoo he got last night, and Griffin and Crystal walk up, with her wearing a wedding ring on her invisible finger. Frank and Eunice arrive, and he has no arms, having lost them gambling. In her room, Ericka shows the device to Abraham, and then tells him that Dracula saved her life. She says the way he acted with Mavis was almost human, and he replies that monsters have no feelings, and they must fulfill the mission. The next day, Frank has replaced his arms with lobster claws from the seafood buffet. At a dance party, Mavis is still trying to process the fact that Dracula zinged with Ericka, and Johnny tells her that love makes them do crazy things. He reminds her that they were different species, but when they zinged, nothing could keep them apart. Realizing that Johnny was right, she runs up to talk to Dracula. She tells him that he has to tell Ericka how he feels, and he starts off to find her. Just then, the music stops, and Abraham's face comes on the monitors. He says he knows that Dracula recognizes him, and he holds up the device. Dracula says that it's just Ericka's heirloom, but Abraham reveals that Ericka retrieved it because she's his great-granddaughter. He shows them that it's a canister with sheet music. He plays the music on a piano, stirring a creature known as the Kraken. With the Kraken swatting at the guests, Dracula flies toward Abraham, but is caught by the Kraken in midair. He tries to free himself by changing forms, but the Kraken maintains its grip. Ericka looks at him sadly. Trapped and growing weaker, Dracula submits to defeat. Mavis tries to save him, but the Kraken pins her down, and throws Dracula into the air toward his mouth. At the last second, Ericka jumps and bounces off Blobby, and she grabs Dracula out of the air. They land in water at the edge of the dance floor, and she holds him up and tells Abraham that he can't kill Dracula. She says monsters have families, and laugh and love just like people. She says she knows it because when she first saw Dracula, she zinged. With renewed determination, Dracula starts to fight back against the Kraken. Johnny stops him and tells him that the only way to fight the ominous music that Abraham is playing is with happy music. He sets up his DJ equipment and plays "Good Vibrations." The Kraken starts to sway to the beat, until Abraham makes his music louder, causing the Kraken to resume the attack. Finding an even brighter song, Johnny plays "Don't Worry, Be Happy," and the Kraken starts swaying again. Abraham makes his music louder still, and Johnny realizes he needs the ultimate musical weapon, and starts playing "The Macarena." Soon, both the Kraken and Abraham are moving their arms to the music, unable to control themselves. Abraham falls off the DJ booth and toward the water, and Dracula turns into a bat and flies up to him, grabbing him before he hits. Dracula returns Abraham to the dance floor, and he asks why he had saved him. Dracula says that human or monster, we are all the same. Ericka runs up and hugs him, and Abraham sheepishly offers them all a full refund for the cruise. The wolf pups stampede around the deck, and everyone realizes they haven't seen Wayne and Wanda in a long time. Ericka takes them to the closet where she had hidden them, and Dracula zaps them back to life. Back at the hotel, Dracula and Ericka sneak up to the roof, and she asks if he's going to suck her blood. He responds by getting down on one knee and opening a box with a spider-shaped ring with a red jewel. The ring claws its way onto her finger, and she tries to answer, but can only speak gibberish. Everyone else shows up and asks what her answer was. Recovering, she says yes, and everyone cheers. Tinkles happily runs in and tackles them both. A happy new chapter had begun at the Hotel Transylvania.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (known as Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation internationally) is the second sequel to Sony Pictures Animation 's Hotel Transylvania . It is the third directing credit of the franchise for Genndy Tartakovsky and the first with him as writer, having replaced Robert Smigel from the first two films. The film is preceded immediately by the short Puppy! , which played in theaters in front of The Emoji Movie note  Curious they would replay again for this movie, neh? .

It's been more than a century since the death of Dracula's wife, Martha. Feeling very lonely, Drac decides to get back into the dating game, but has a hard time. Seeing him getting overworked and stressed, his daughter Mavis decides to give him a vacation by taking him and his family and friends on a cruise for monsters aboard the cruise ship Legacy . The trip goes poorly for Drac until he meets the ship's captain, an attractive woman named Ericka. Experiencing a "Zing", Drac falls instantly in love with her, and it seems that she feels the same way. Unbeknownst to him, Ericka is actually the great-granddaughter of Drac's greatest enemy, Abraham Van Helsing, and she is trying to kill him. With an insidious trap in store, it might be down to Mavis to save him before it's too late.

The film was followed by Monster Pets , a short aired on YouTube , and the finale movie Hotel Transylvania: Transformania .

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation provides examples of:

  • Dracula starts this for Ericka, once she figures out he's interested but before she understands what a Zing is.
  • Winnie for Dennis in a more subdued way. Dennis treats her like a best friend and partner in crime while she is, very vocally, head over heels for him.
  • Action Girl : Ericka, who can be very agile and almost ninja-like at times, though we don't see her doing much actual combat.
  • Action Film, Quiet Drama Scene : While it doesn't lack the manic energy and Rapid-Fire Comedy of the first two films, this is the first Transylvania movie to have extended sequences without dialogue or loud music, namely the Dracula family scuba diving and Mavis following Ericka down the secret passage. It's probably safe to assume that these were Genndy Tartakovsky 's ideas.
  • Adaptational Badass : Dracula, even above the level the other two films had him at. The Hellsings hunted him for hundreds of years and nothing worked, to the point Abraham van Hellsing decided only an ultimate weapon that mind controls a kraken would be enough to actually do him in. His rapid-fire shapeshifting and ability to ignore gravity are major bonuses in battle.
  • Adaptational Villainy : Due to most of the series' monsters being more heroic than their original counterparts, Abraham Van Helsing, in the context of this series' universe, is an obsessive, monster-killing bigot. He grows out of this mindset by the end of the film, after Ericka changes sides.
  • Almost Kiss : Dracula and Ericka come close to sharing a kiss on their date at the cantina, but are interrupted by Mavis.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love : Ericka admits during the climax that she "zinged" with Drac. This is enough to snap Drac out of unconsciousness.
  • Annoying Arrows : When Dracula is helping Ericka through a field of booby traps, he gets pierced by multiple spears, arrows, snakes and a big axe, all without missing a beat.
  • Arc Words : "Legacy". It's the name of the cruiseship, and Van Helsing stresses the Van Helsing legacy to destroy all monsters. In the final act of the movie, Ericka claims that its time to start a new legacy upon her Heel–Face Turn , one that includes humans and monsters.
  • Arch-Enemy : Dracula is considered such for the entire Van Helsing bloodline, having encountered multiple generations of Van Helsings and evaded their attempts on his life in an almost Bugs Bunny -esque degree of competence , Abraham being one of his most persistent pursuers. This presumably ends with Ericka.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking : Abraham tells Ericka that as he grew older, his body started to fail him. First his liver, spleen and kidneys, and then his hair fell out.
  • Art Evolution : The film has slightly more detail than both of the previous entries, but also has a far more "2D" flair, with the characters having a lot more stretchiness in their movements and expressions.
  • Artifact Title : Being set on a cruise ship leaves a very tenuous connection to either hotels or Transylvania, though Drac lampshades the setting is functionally quite similar.
  • Asian Fox Spirit : One of the background monsters is a multi-tailed vixen.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter : The fish-man who takes Wayne and Wanda's pups.
  • Be as Unhelpful as Possible : The Gremlins on the Air Gremlin plane, who do everything in their power to make their passengers' flights as unpleasant as possible. Justified, given their real mythological history of being plane-wreckers.
  • Beach Episode : Emphasized in the marketing, though the majority of the sequences take place on the boat.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing : Ericka, who pretends to be a friendly captain charmed by Drac, only to reveal later that she's actually a monster hunter — and on top of all that, she's also the great-granddaughter of Abraham Van Helsing. She grows out of this once she begins to legitimately fall for Drac.
  • Body Horror : Plenty throughout the film. Since monsters can take a lot of damage without dropping, the studio saw no reason not to play up the Amusing Injuries as much as possible. One prominent case is the fly-man whose eye gets popped out of his head on the plane.
  • Call-Back : We find out that "arm cousins", an excuse used to justify Johnny's apparent relation to Frank, are actually a real thing — an actual arm cousin of Frank is set up with Drac at the beginning.
  • The Captain : Ericka commands the cruise ship Legacy .
  • Casual Danger Dialogue : The gremlin pilot and co-pilot are seen calmly drinking tea and discussing their weekend plans while their plane is literally falling out of the sky.
  • Compressed Vice : Frank suddenly develops a serious gambling addiction for this film, to the point of losing his hands and replacing them with lobster claws.
  • Continuity Nod : In the beginning, we see the zombie composers again, after their absence from the second film.
  • Covers Always Lie : Neither Ericka nor Abraham appear on any of the posters or the DVD/Blu-Ray covers, with the posters making it look like the vacation itself is the sole source of conflict.
  • Cyborg : In order to keep himself alive, Abraham Van Helsing replaced his body piece by piece with clumsy Steampunk tech to the point were the only remaining parts of his are his head, arms and a few internal organs.
  • Dance of Romance : Drac protecting Ericka from the traps in the Atlantis ruins turns into this.
  • Death Trap Tango : Dracula manages to protect Ericka from a series of death-traps leading up to the Instrument of Destruction in Atlantean ruins, the two of them devolving into a dance. While Dracula's reflexes manages to keep Ericka out of harms way, Dracula takes the brunt of said traps , but he's too love-struck by her to actually notice.
  • Denser and Wackier : Downplayed. While the other films are fairly cartoonish and screwball, Summer Vacation is much zanier and full of slapstick than the others to the point where many compare it to a Looney Tunes cartoon. Special mentions go to the Road Runner vs. Coyote relationship Dracula had with Abraham Van Helsing, the Failure Montage where Ericka tries and fails to kill Dracula without him even noticing, the Amusing Injuries Drac sustains in the temple and the Aside Glance he gives before shrugging and joining in on "The Macarena" during the climax ( It Makes Sense in Context )
  • Does This Remind You of Anything? : At the end, the way Drac and Ericka giddily try sneaking away from the crowd makes it seem very much like they're planning to have sex. Turns out, Drac just wanted some privacy to propose to her.
  • Do Not Adjust Your Set : Mavis gets the idea to book the cruise for the vacation after being unable to click away from a television commercial for it. Given that it's unlikely Ericka and Abraham would have wanted to leave their plot to chance, it seems very possible they deliberately engineered it this way.
  • Easily Forgiven : Abraham Van Helsing earns the monsters' forgiveness by giving them a full refund.
  • Everyone Can See It : Drac's friends can easily tell that Drac is in love with Ericka.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog : Tinkles growls at Abraham Van Helsing even when he's hidden behind a door. After the latter's Heel–Face Turn , Tinkles starts liking him.
  • Exact Words : Abraham forces Ericka to promise she will not try to kill Dracula until they get to Atlantis; she obliges. Once he's out of her sight, Ericka tells herself she will not try to kill Dracula; she will kill Dracula.
  • Failure Montage : Ericka tries going to great lengths to destroy Drac herself on the cruise, but all her attempts are inadvertently thwarted by Blobby.
  • Fantastic Racism : Runs in the family, apparently, from Abraham Van Helsing down to his great-granddaughter Ericka. Although both move past that and befriend the monsters in the end .
  • Foreshadowing : Ericka being a Van Helsing is hinted at during her introduction before it's confirmed, such as when she acts hesitant to touch or get close to some of the monsters, and when she compliments Drac by saying "I'd kill for that skin."
  • Fourth-Date Marriage : Drac proposes to Ericka at the end of the movie, despite them having only known each other for a few days, at best. Even assuming there was a time skip at some point, they couldn't have known each other for more than a few months, which is how long cruises generally last.
  • Freaky Electronic Music : Inside the Instrument of Destruction is sheet music, that, when played, mind controls the Kraken into destroying everything. In attempt to have the Kraken kill all monsters, Abraham Van Helsing plays an EDM rendition of this song. He comes very close to succeeding.
  • The Gambling Addict : Eunice won't let Frank gamble because he (literally) lost an arm and a leg last time and it wasn't easy to find replacements. He goes behind her back and gambles anyway. As a result, he now uses crab claws as replacement hands.
  • Gas-Cylinder Rocket : Sends an unfortunate fish-man jetting into the sky when he attempts to place a scuba tank on one of the prickly newlyweds' backs.
  • Gasshole : Drac suffers a bout of flatulence after eating guacamole laced with garlic. It later happens to Mavis as well.
  • Gibberish of Love : Drac often devolves into this around Ericka. She slips into it too when Drac proposes to her at the end of the movie.
  • Griping About Gremlins : The airliner that transports the hotel residents to the Legacy is entirely crewed by small green gremlins. By the time it begins its approach to the embarkation-point in the Bermuda Triangle, the plane has been almost completely disassembled by its own crew's incompetence and/or compulsion to break stuff.
  • Growling Gut : Happens to Drac and Mavis after eating guacamole laced with garlic.
  • He Who Fights Monsters : Abraham believes that monsters are abominations that should be stamped out, yet by this point it would be a stretch for him to qualify as human given his mechanical upgrades .
  • Heart Beats out of Chest : Happens to Drac when he sees Ericka for the first time.
  • Held Gaze : Drac and Ericka share one on their date. This is when Ericka begins to legitimately fall for Drac and starts questioning her goal of killing him.
  • The Heavy : Ericka is this for the still alive Abraham Van Helsing.
  • Heel–Face Turn : Ericka, over the course of the film. Abraham Van Helsing as well.
  • High-Heel–Face Turn : Ericka becomes reluctant to kill Dracula once she begins to fall in love with him for real.
  • Hourglass Plot : In the first movie, Dracula didn't want Mavis to date a human, because he was afraid of losing her. This time, their roles are reversed.
  • Human Pincushion : Drac gets hit with dozens of darts and arrows, venomous snakes, even an axe to the head, while protecting Ericka from a booby-traps-riddled temple in Atlantis.
  • Human Popsicle : It turns out that Abraham Van Helsing himself used this method to survive to the present day .
  • The "I Love You" Stigma : When Drac confesses that he Zinged with Ericka. When he explains that a Zing is like "true love", Ericka freaks out and rejects his feelings.
  • Instrument of Murder : The Doomsday Device Abraham uses to destroy all of the monsters just so happens to be a sheet of music that, when played, compiles the Kraken to destroy all monsters within sight. Extra points for when Abraham refers to it by name as the "instrument of destruction."
  • Irony : Abraham Van Helsing, the enemy to all monsters, is defeated by Johnny, a human, and his good vibes music. In addition, due to the steampunk automation parts keeping him alive, he's far closer to the monsters he despises than being still human.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall : When Drac is having trouble and asks his Siri for a "date," she responds "The date is Friday July 13th," the release date of the movie.
  • Light Is Not Good : Ericka always wears white clothes, but is one of the main villains and is out to kill Drac. Subverted after her Heel–Face Turn .
  • Lightning Gun : Abraham Van Helsing is introduced carrying a plasma globe-topped Ray Gun capable of shooting lightning .
  • Literal Metaphor : The last time Frank gambled, he literally lost an arm and a leg. This time, he only loses his hands.
  • Love at First Sight : When Drac first sees Ericka, he falls fast and he falls hard . He's shocked, because he thought a Zing could only happen once in your life.
  • MacGuffin : The real reason behind the cruise is because Abraham believes it to be impossible to kill Drac without the artifact that sunk Atlantis .
  • Makes Just as Much Sense in Context : In order to defeat Van Helsing, Johnny plays "La Macarena" .
  • Meaningful Name : The Legacy , as Ericka sees herself as carrying on the legacy of her great-grandfather Abraham Van Helsing.
  • Mind-Control Eyes : When Abraham Van Helsing uses his music to control the Kraken , its eyes burn bright red.
  • Mind-Control Music : The weapon that sunk Atlantis is a piece of sheet music, which Abraham Van Helsing uses to control the Kraken into going on a murderous rampage.
  • Monster/Slayer Romance : Drac falls in love with Ericka who is a Van Helsing.
  • Moonburn : On the beach, Eunice asks her husband if he could rub moon-screen on her back to keep her from getting burned.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast : To counter Van Helsing's evil music, Johnny and Drac play upbeat songs to snap the Kraken out of his control. They first try "Good Vibrations" and it works, but Van Helsing plays the music louder and regains control; next they try "Dont Worry, Be Happy", with the same result. Finally, they succeed with, of all things "La Macarena".
  • Never Trust a Trailer : The trailer shows Drac and his friends' reactions when Blobby is about to puke and when Blobby's puke becomes a mini-Blobby. In the movie, they're not present to witness mini-Blobby's birth.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased : There's a very slight example at the end of the movie: Winnie makes a very forward romantic advance, getting close to Dennis's face and asking him to look her in the eyes, hoping to start a "zing" between the two of them. Dennis gets nervous, and finally decides he's too young for a relationship right now, so he leaves without looking Winnie in the eyes, with Winnie chasing him.
  • Non-Malicious Monster : When the Kraken is first introduced, he places his tentacles on the deck of the ship as he ominously rises from the ocean... only to break into song, extolling the virtues of Atlantis. He's only malicious when controlled through Mind-Control Music , which is Abraham's plan.
  • Not This One, That One : This is done to the audience - after everyone leaves Hotel Transylvania for the vacation, we are shown a sleek aircraft labeled "Modern Airlines" in the sky, but then pan to a bright green aircraft labeled "Gremlin Airlines" which is literally falling apart around the passengers as they fly.
  • Not What It Looks Like : Mavis catches Ericka with Dracula just as she's trying to pull an axe embedded on his head, making it seem to Mavis like she was trying to kill her father.
  • Odd Name Out : Wayne and Wanda’s second daughter is named Sunny, which breaks the pattern of the werewolf family all having ‘W’ names.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business : In the beginning of the film, when Griffin tells Dracula that he can find love with a phone app, he panics and deflects that he is too busy, ending the conversation with "blah blah blah". When Frank calls attention to it, Drac is quick to deny it. Granted, he didn't say it with the inflection or intent the bad impression is meant to imply, but it still applies.
  • Out of Focus : Wayne and Wanda are completely out of the second half of the movie due to being tranquilized.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise : Upon noticing a "no pets allowed" sign, Dennis and Winnie disguise Tinkles as "Bob" using a massive trenchcoat and relatively tiny hat. Played 100% straight - nobody recognizes "Bob" until the end when he ditches both. Justified, as in this universe monsters can have all sorts of appearances, so it wouldn't be too far fetched to assume that there could be a large dog monster on board. Though that does raise the question of where "Monster" ends and "pet" begins.
  • Parental Abandonment : Ericka apparently never knew her parents, as they died when she was very young.
  • Parental Bonus : Frank's arm cousin could count since she's a leggy redhead clad in a cocktail dress (possibly even a reference to Jessica Rabbit ) with a gigantic butt. She just so happens to be a composite of body parts with one comically muscular arm.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick : Mavis and Johnny talk about it when they see Drac with Ericka. Johnny claims he still feels uneasy when his parents kiss.
  • Parent with New Paramour : Dracula with Ericka or so he thinks , much to Mavis' chagrin.
  • Plane Awful Flight : The main cast board Gremlin Air, where the crew is made up of gremlins that are dismantling the very plane they are supposed to fly.
  • Raised by Grandparents : Great-grandfather in Ericka's case.
  • The flashback to 1897 features not only Dracula but all of the main monsters. Dracula, Frank and Murray are undead, so them being around back then is not so surprising, but there is no explanation for Wayne or Griffin being that old.
  • Abraham Van Helsing has kept himself alive for over a century by gradually replacing his body with Steampunk machinery; his head and hands are evidently the only thing left.
  • Recycled with a Gimmick : An In-Universe example; Drac (at least initially) hates the idea of going on a cruise, telling Murray (and the others) that it's "...a hotel on the water ."
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning : When Abraham Van Helsing uses his music to control the Kraken , its eyes burn bright red.
  • Retcon : In the first movie, Dracula specifies that garlic makes his throat swell up. Here, it gives him gas instead.
  • Ridiculously Alive Undead : Ericka hears that Dracula the vampire is allergic to garlic , so she tricks him into eating garlic-laced guacamole to kill him. All this does is make him break wind. Later, the same thing happens to his daughter Mavis.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons : Ericka wants to kill Drac but Mavis' reasons to believe it are her reluctance to accept her father having a new love and a misunderstanding that makes Mavis believe Ericka had just hit him with an axe .
  • Road Runner vs. Coyote : It pretty much establishes Abraham and Dracula, Dracula evading and thwarting all of Abraham's attempts on his life to an almost absurd degree. Subverted with Drac vs. Ericka as he had absolutely no idea that they were trying to kill him and just happened to waltz around the traps incidentally.
  • Save the Villain : Drac saves Abraham Van Helsing's life. Drac had previously saved Ericka's but that doesn't count because he didn't realize that she was technically a villain at the time.
  • Sequel Goes Foreign : On a cruise to the tropics instead of taking place in or at the titular hotel. Lampshaded by Dracula, who points out that a cruise and a hotel are more or less the same concept.
  • Serial Escalation : The first two films are relatively self-contained to the Hotel. This film ups things to a cruise ship, with more exotic locations such as the Bermuda Triangle.
  • Shout-Out : The cruise ship in the film, the Legacy , bears a very strong resemblance to the Titanic and her sister ships Olympic and Britannic — the Legacy just has five funnels instead of four, and is rather cartoonishly shorter and fatter than the real-life ocean liners. Fortunately, however, the film takes place in the tropics, so icebergs are not a hazard.
  • Shown Their Work : The train conductor at the beginning of the movie uses the correct Hungarian pronunciation for "Budapest".
  • Silence Is Golden : The scuba diving scene is mostly dialogue-free, with the only two total lines coming from Stan and Ericka.
  • Silly Walk : The Dracula family in their scuba-gear.
  • Played for Laughs in the scene where Ericka is routinely trying to kill Drac in various ways, all while he's (and Blobby, who thwarts her plans) blissfully dancing around the ship to the tune of "24K Magic".
  • The whole climax of the film, where the Kraken starts going on a rampage to the sound of a simplistic rave beat that happens to brainwash and control it. As such, Drac and Johnny have to drown said beat with even more dissonant upbeat songs to break the Kraken free.
  • Super-Toughness : When Dracula helps Ericka retrieve "her family heirloom", he uses his Super-Reflexes , Super-Speed and Super-Strength to move her out of the way of booby-traps. By the end of it, he has dozens of darts and arrows imbedded in his body, six poisonous snakes clinging to his arms, is burned, gets crushed by a giant spiked ball and gets an axe in his head . Not only does he not react to any of it, but he seems too love-struck to even notice. Whether or not this is because of his vampire physiology or for the sake of comedy is vague, as none of it leaves a scratch on him.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That : Mavis somewhat overhears Drac using his smartphone to try to find a date, but doesn't really catch the gist of it. When she finds him, though, she does realize that he's hiding something from her and comes to the conclusion that he's stressed and needs a break. Drac happily seizes upon this excuse, saying that it's exactly the case.
  • Taking the Bullet : Drac takes several kinds of ammo for Ericka in the Atlantis ruins.
  • Terrorists Without a Cause : Abraham's Fantastic Racism does not seem to be based around a particular ideology or motivation other than exterminating monsters being the Van Helsing Family Business .
  • That Came Out Wrong : When Mavis tries explaining to Dennis that dogs were not allowed to just run wild at the wedding, Winnie gives an offended gasp and shocked expression before Mavis quickly redacts her statement and says that pets were not allowed.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone : Wayne and Wanda, the beleaguered parents of the Werewolf kids, upon finding themselves in a daycare on the Cruise, finds out that the crew will willingly take their kids for the day. They decide that's good enough, because they finally get a break from having to take care of his massive litter. He and Wanda also spend the rest of the film in a closet, which they don't seem to have minded very much, to the point of planning another vacation .
  • Tranquilizer Dart : After stumbling upon Ericka and Abraham Van Helsing discussing their plan , Wayne and Wanda are immediately tranquilized and locked in a janitor's closet. They stay there for almost the rest of the movie.
  • Unknown Rival : Abraham Van Helsing considers himself and Dracula mortal enemies and views him as a scourge that needs to be exterminated. Dracula barely recalls who he is and initially assumes he's just a rival hotelier. Granted, this is implied to be because he assumed Van Helsing is dead: once Van Helsing gives his name, Drac becomes appropriately serious.
  • Vacation Episode
  • Van Helsing Hate Crime : The Trope Namer 's family.
  • Virtual Assistant Blunder : Drac hears that he can get a date over the internet and attempts to ask his smart phone to set him up on a date, but the phone keeps misunderstanding his instructions. Dracula: I'm looking for a date. Phone: The date is Friday, July 13th. Dracula: No no no. I want to meet someone. Phone: Understood, you want to eat dim sum! Dracula: Are you kidding me right now?
  • Weaksauce Weakness : Because the Kraken is controlled through music, Dracula and Johnny were able to usurp control with music that sends good vibes, the "Macarena" of all things being what thwarts Van Helsing.
  • What Happened to the Mouse? : The dance-party DJ is the last we see of any of the Atlanteans, despite them otherwise serving as the staff of the cruise's last destination.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy : Ericka thinks garlic kills vampires like in most tales. It doesn't. It just gives them gas.

Video Example(s):

"Hey macarena!"

The fact that the climax can be summed up as a DJ-battle where the day is saved by everyone doing the macarena is so stupid, yet it's so hilarious that most people don't mind. What cements it is the dopey face Tinkles makes when he does it.

Critic Reviews for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Audience reviews for hotel transylvania 3: summer vacation.

The Hotel Transylvania franchise exists in a very interesting place in the Sandlerverse. God, the last word of the previous sentence got me thinking about what if all of Adam Sandler's live-action films take place in the same universe and his character is just kind of like Terry O'Quinn in The Stepfather, except less stabby and murdery. He just moves on to a new family once he's bored of the old one. Would be an interesting twist to say the least if in, say, the next Sandler travesty, all of his previous families confronted him and killed him off for good. I mean his character, not Sandler for real, as much as I disdain him for most of his output. Regardless, the point I'm trying to make is that Hotel Transylvania is, for all intents and purposes, very much a Sandler movie, where he gets his untalented buddies, Kevin James and David Spade, a paycheck. Andy Samberg and Steve Buscemi, also Sandler regulars (semi-regular in the case of Samberg) are both incredibly talented, so I don't count them. And yet, even with Sandler's presence and the presences of a couple of his buddies, I've always enjoyed the Hotel Transylvania movies. I remember talking to a friend about movies and what we respectively enjoy whatnot and she mentioned that I have refined tastes. I sort of laughed at the notion that I have refined tastes and I mentioned that I liked both Hotel Transylvania movies (this was before this one's release). I feel like that might sound a little condescending towards this franchise and the people that work on it. And, maybe, at the time, I did mean it. Let's be honest, as consistently entertaining as this series has been, it's not really gonna compete with any of the major offerings from Pixar or DreamWorks. This has always been meant as something more of a diversion, something that you watch, have a laugh with and move on. The narratives in these movies don't go as deep or explore interesting themes like Coco, Inside Out and the How To Train Your Dragon series. They're fairly one-dimensional in their approach, it's all about the slapstick, the colorful worlds and the overall silliness. And, you know what, to their credit, they've made it work now for three straight movies. But, at the same time, I do like the film's strong core of the connection between Dracula and the people closest to him. Whether that be his daughter, his grandson, son-in-law or friends, I do like the core dynamic and the series has always emphasized that connection. It gives it an emotional core, so to speak. Like I said, it's not as in-depth in this regard as, say, Coco, but it does a good enough job regardless. Now, having said that, I must go back to something I said earlier and that is the fact that this franchise, three films in now, has managed to be consistently entertaining from the start. I thought the first one was definitely the peak. The second was a definite drop in quality, but it wasn't as precipitous a drop for a film that, realistically speaking, is centered mostly on slapstick, goofy gags and, sometimes, immature humor. Those usually don't hold up well going into a sequel and, again, while it was slightly less entertaining than the original, the first sequel was still fun. Having said that, I definitely was expecting the drop-off point in quality to be the second sequel, which is this one, and, as much as I enjoyed the previous films, I can't say I was looking forward to this for that very reason. Well, goddamn it, would you look at that? I ACTUALLY enjoyed this movie as well. I honestly don't even know what it is about this, but it seems that they seem to hook me every time one of these movies comes out. This follows the path that Despicable Me has followed and that is adding a new character each installment with the hope that it'll add something fresh and, yet, those movies have never been good. I hate the minions and, as a whole, I just don't like the universe in general. Because, realistically speaking, there's really not THAT much difference between Hotel Transylvania and Despicable Me as franchises. And by differences I mean in the creative department. Both are silly, feature lots of gags and slapstick and both have really colorful worlds. And yet, in all honesty, Hotel Transylvania does EVERYTHING better than Despicable Me. Of course, feel free to disagree, but I know I'm right. In all seriousness, though, it's sort of weird. I just think Hotel Transylvania executes its shtick much better than DM. Neither here nor there, I suppose. This is pretty much what it sounds like. The monsters go on this cruise that is captained by this woman with nefarious intentions to kill Dracula. For, you see, she is a member of the Van Helsing family, whom Dracula has feuded with throughout the hundreds of years of his life. Ericka has been raised and trained by her great-grandfather (who's still alive) to hate monsters but, most importantly, Dracula. She must fulfill her family's legacy of finally destroying the vampire. But, of course, Dracula, who has been lonely since his wife's death, falls in love with Ericka Van Helsing. But he does not know she's a Van Helsing, she keeps it hidden so as to not reveal her true intentions. Oh, the drama is on a Shakespearean level. All joking aside, however, the story is what you would expect it to be. Ericka decides to go on a date with Drac to butter him up for the kill, but she starts falling in love with him. The main narrative is quite shallow and one-dimensional, but it is what brings the characters to this cruise. And I don't really mean one-dimensional as a negative, as I feel the movie is consistently entertaining from beginning to end and the whole cruise setting opens up the doors for the vast array of characters to get up to the hi-jinks we've come to expect of them and this is no different. I'm not saying that there's anything great in this movie, because there's really not, but the film is fun to watch. Is it the most tightly scripted film you've ever seen? Of course not, but it doesn't need to be. I do think that one of the things this franchise understands is that it's never gonna compete with Pixar's best, so it doesn't even try to come close to that. It does focus on what it does well and that is everything that I've mentioned that I won't bother mentioning again. It accentuates its strengths and hides its weaknesses. Which, really, you could make the argument for Despicable Me but, again, DM doesn't do it nearly as effectively as this franchise. The thing with DM is that it sort of forces you to have fun, whereas this franchise the fun comes much more organically and natural to you. Like you don't even notice. DM, on the other hand, tries way too fucking hard. The animation is very solid here, there's plenty of colorful visuals to distract the kids and, to me, enough humor to entertain those older than the demographic this film is going for. I don't know what else you want me to say about this, I had a good time and I don't feel the need to keep going on with this review to, essentially, say the same thing over and over again. If you've liked the previous films in this franchise, then this is more of what you want. If you hated it, then you'll continue to hate it. For my money, I enjoyed myself and I don't regret watching this at all.

legacy cruise ship hotel transylvania 3

Andy Sambergï¿ 1/2(TM)s character has zero consistency, but he delivers the single funniest joke in the movie in the most genuine of ways to the point it almost makes up for how generic every other laugh in the movie is. That said, even though the Hotel Transylvania series has always felt rather cheap and completely average the background animation in this latest entry is rather exquisite. Of course, as gorgeous as the animation indeed is, the fact it quickly shot to the top of the ï¿ 1/2prosï¿ 1/2Â? list should tell you enough about the mediocrity of the rest of the movie. P.S. The Abraham Van Helsing character and character design is totally bonkers and kind of fantastic.

The Hotel Transylvania series has been consistently entertaining since the release of the original film back in 2012. Whether or not you're a fan of the humour throughout these movies or not, it's made for kids, and I believe that it serves its purpose once again with this latest installment in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. While each film isn't without its issues, I have been entertained by the life-lessons for kids and the story arcs that each character goes through. Personally, I wouldn't recommend these movies to anyone who isn't susceptible to children's humour, or even animation in general-because this isn't a series that's going to win you over. If you liked the first two movies, you'll probably get a kick out of this one for the most part. Here's why Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is passable fare. Adam Sandler and company all return to lend their voices to this film and it's honestly the one film franchise where they all fit as a whole in my opinion. This time, the residents of Dracula's hotel attend a summer vacation cruise, but they don't know that it's manned by Dracula's evil nemesis, Van Helsing (well, at least his family's legacy). I would normally consider a plot point like that to be a spoiler, but it's given away in the first 20 minutes, so every viewer's surprise will be ruined regardless. It's a fairly sloppy film in that regard, but the other two are sort of like that as well due to the fact that they're mainly directed at kids. For that reason alone, I can forgive it, but it did make for a bit of a frustrating experience. The storyline involving Mavis and Johnny has always been the heart of the franchise in my opinion and truly the only spark that allowed for sequels. Sure, the sense of adventure has always been there, but their story is what makes the core character of Dracula evolve throughout each film. That being said, they're really given the short end of the stick here, being played off as a bumbling couple for comedic purposes. Yes, Johnny has his time to shine throughout the third act, but I felt like they were left out of the big picture in order to make room for Dracula's story, which they didn't have much to do with. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation centres its attention on the characters of Dracula and Ericka, who is the great-granddaughter of his arch-nemesis. This plot line is stretched pretty thin throughout the course of the film, due to the fact that there are no surprises or twists to be had with them. You already know she works for the bad guy and you know he will eventually find out. There is no way of spoiling this movie because it's about as by-the-numbers as you can possibly get. Still, this film isn't without its perks and quirks. Every characteristic I enjoyed about each of the characters over the course of this series is cranked up to eleven and many liberties are taken that will either interest fans or completely turn them off, which I found quite risky. For the most part, I enjoyed myself when watching this film, but it truly is as predictable as you can get. Predictability isn't always a bad thing, especially when your execution is really all that matters in the end. I'm not clamoring for another addition in this franchise, but I wouldn't hate to see it continue either. I've always been mildly entertained by these movies and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation didn't do too much to sway me from that in either direction. It's fine fare for kids at the movies and that's about it, but sometimes that's okay.

'Hotel Transylvania 3’: New Trailer Sets a Trap for the Drac Pack

This is Sandler at his Sandleriest.

A new trailer for Sony Pictures Animation's  Hotel Transylvania 3 has arrived just in time to make your summer vacation plans! Subtitled "Summer Vacation", this story takes  Adam Sandler 's fan-favorite Dracula character on an ocean-going cruise along with his closest family and friends. The twist here is that Drac is feeling a little lonely despite the many monstrous companions that join him on this journey and he's looking for a little companionship. I guess you could call it "companion-ship" because, lo and behold, Drac finds himself infatuated with a member of the cruise ship's crew. But things are not as rosy as they seem on the surface, as this new trailer reveals.

Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky , who co-wrote the film with  Michael McCullers ,  Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation also stars Andy Samberg (Johnny),  Selena Gomez (Mavis), Kevin James (Frank), David Spade (Griffin), Steve Buscemi (Wayne), Keegan-Michael Key (Murray), Molly Shannon (Wanda), Fran Drescher (Eunice), Kathryn Hahn (Ericka), Jim Gaffigan (Van Helsing) and Mel Brooks (Vlad). Take the whole family to see it in theaters starting July 13th!

‘Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation’: Cruising along with a little less zing

The third time is not quite the charmer as the others, but it still offers enough laughs to keep kids plus their mummys and daddies entertained. Rating: 3 stars out of 4.

Movie review.

It’s all about the zing.

If you are not up on monster speak, the term zing refers to what happens once in the life of a vampire, mummy, werewolf, etc. It’s that moment when they know they have found the one true love in their life. In the case of “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) learns it’s possible to zing more than once as he meets the new once-in-a-lifetime love of his life during a monster sea cruise.

While Dracula zings again, this third offering in the offbeat look at the world of ghouls and monsters doesn’t come close to having the same zing as the first or second offering. It’s fun, and director Genndy Tartakovsky (“The Powerpuff Girls,” “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Star Wars: Clone Wars”) knows how to keep the action moving because of all his work in television animation, but the change of approach when dealing with Dracula coupled with a setting switch leaves the production just a little light on zing.

“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” picks up with the getaway destination for creatures doing booming business. Things are going so well that a break is needed and the group books passage on the first monster cruise, which will take them from the Bermuda Triangle to the found city of Atlantis. The trip becomes a monster version of “The Love Boat” as Dracula does what he has thought was impossible: He falls in love again. The problem is she’s the last in the long line of Van Helsings, who have made it their life’s work to kill Dracula.

The most enjoyable part of the first two films was how every nerve in Dracula’s batty body was stretched to the limit by being a single father and grandfather. In “Hotel Transylvania,” the problem was that a human fell in love with Dracula’s daughter, Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez). The follow-up film had Dracula and his buddies trying to bring out the monster in his half-human, half-vampire grandson as a way of keeping Mavis from leaving the hotel.

Seeing Dracula flabbergasted makes for plenty of fun because Sandler has a way of making his voice sound both commanding and confused. It’s not quite the same when his emotional confusion comes from Dracula falling in love with the captain of the cruise ship (Kathryn Hahn).

There’s also something a little disconcerting about the action shifting from the hotel to the ship. In the hotel, Dracula is pulled between his personal and professional problems. Once he leaves the hotel, half the angst is gone.

That being said, “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” doesn’t suck. It is a visual splendor, from the fun way the creatures are portrayed to the pacing. Keeping Tartakovsky as director of all three films creates a fluid sense of comedy and look.

It would have been nice if “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” had the same zing as past efforts. But, there’s never a love as zing-filled as the first, and it happening a second time is amazing. The third time is not quite the charmer as the others, but still offers enough laughs to keep kids plus their mummys and daddies entertained.

★★★ “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” with the voices of Adam Sandler, David Spade, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, Mel Brooks, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin James, Fran Drescher. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, from a screenplay by Tartakovsky and Michael McCullers. 97 minutes. Rated PG for some action and rude humor. Opens July 13 at multiple theaters.

Background [ ]

Appearance [ ].

The Kraken is a massive blueish-purple sea creature with a huge mouth withed with long, sharp teeth. He has two big, black eyes and His numerous tentacles are shown to be larger than the Legacy .

Personality [ ]

The Kraken is shown to be very charming, friendly, and helpful towards the passengers onboard the ship, only wishing to sing and perform for them all. Under the influence of the Instrument of Destruction, however, the Kraken becomes more mindless, vicious, and destructive and would attack anybody on sight. However, if affected by catchier music, he will break out of his trance and happily dance along.

It's implied that he, under the spell of the Instrument's music, was the initial cause of Atlantis's destruction, as someone must have played it for any reason.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation [ ]

The Kraken first emerges from under the sea when the Legacy cruise ship arrives at Atlantis . At first, the monsters are afraid, but when, he pulls out a giant microphone and greets the monsters on board by singing them a song, the tourists feel better; some of them even appear to find him attractive. He carries the ship over to debarkation area and the monsters arrive in a in hallway that leads to a huge casino. The excited monsters rush to gamble just as Kraken finishes his song and winks at the camera.

Later, Kraken is sleeping in his bed under the sea. However, Abraham uses the music sheet from inside the Instrument of Destruction to play a melody that awakens and hypnotizes Kraken, making his eyes twitch in beat with the music and turn into an orange-red color. Kraken emerges from the ocean and begins to violently attack the monsters, who are now at a party on a small island near the rest of Atlantis. Dracula attempts to stop him, but the Kraken quickly injures and nearly suffocates Dracula with his tentacles. Mavis attempts to fly to her father and save him, but Kraken grabs Mavis and slams her back down onto the floor.

Having seen enough, Ericka jumps onto Tinkles and rides up Kraken's tentacle to save Dracula and lands onto one of the Kraken's eyes, releasing Dracula, the two landing on a ledge. After Ericka confesses her love for Dracula, Abraham commands Kraken to attack the two and they are shoved across the floor. Johnny then picks Drac up and instructs him to use his power to enhance Johnny's upbeat and happy DJ music to combat the mind controlling music. These attempts work temporarily, but Abraham's music proves to be too strong. After the second attempt, he makes Kraken take off the chunk where Drac and Johnny are and prepares to eat them. Luckily, Johnny finds the Macarena song and Drac just as Kraken throws the chunk into his mouth. This catchy tune proves to work, freeing Kraken from Abraham's control as well as shredding the ancient music sheet. Kraken brings Drac and Johnny back to the ground and everyone dances along.

Kraken is last seen waving goodbye to the cruise ship as it sails back home.

Concept Art [ ]

Concept Art for Kraken

  • Kraken is the largest monster in the series.
  • He's also the strongest monster in the series, shown to be capable of destroying the bridge to Atlantis with ease, as well as overpowering every monster inside including Dracula and Mavis.
  • Kraken has no dialogue throughout the movie, in fact he is silent and he only sings.
  • There were three different animation models for the Kraken: the standard version, seen in most shots in the film, the "Kraken Mac", used in the shot where he does the Macarena, and a model for close-up shots called "Stuntacle", which added extra texture to his body and tentacles and had more animation controls.
  • It was David Foster and Michael Bublé (Songwriters of "It's Party Time") who had the idea of having Joe Jonas sing the Kraken's song. Bublé is known for singing in a 1950s crooner style and had Jonas do the same.

Hotel Transylvania 3 Trailer: Dracula Goes Cruising For Love

Dracula may be in for the most terrifying journey of his extremely long life: he's ready to start dating.

Sony Pictures Animation released the official trailer for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation , the latest installment in the hugely successful franchise, and it takes the whole gang to the high seas for a bright and colorful cruise. Of course, there's a reason they leave their lodging business behind.

Set six years after the events of 2015's Hotel Transylvania 2 , the movie finds Dracula (voiced again by Adam Sandler) starting to realize there's a gaping hole in his heart — well, where his heart should be. That prompts his daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) to book a trip for the entire family (both human and monster) on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship.

Although skeptical about finding love, Dracula quickly falls for the ship's mysterious captain Ericka (Kathryn Hahn). But there's far more to Ericka than it seems: she's secretly the descendent of Abraham Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan), the famous monster hunter and Dracula's ancient archenemy. As Dracula gets pulled into danger, it's up to Mavis to lead the "Drac Pack" and stop Ericka before it's too late.

Again directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, who helmed the first two movies, Hotel Transylvania 3 boasts an all-star supporting cast including Mel Brooks as Dracula's father, Andy Samberg as Mavis' husband Johnny, Kevin James as Frankenstein, Steve Buscemi as the werewolf Wayne, David Spade as Griffin the Invisible Man, Keegan-Michael Key as Murray the mummy, Fran Drescher as Frankenstein's wife Eunice, and Molly Shannon as Wayne's wife Wanda.

Slap on lots of sunscreen and look for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation to arrive in theaters on July 13.
